CATHEDRAL-OF ESCAPE TOMMY COLEMAN MY TOP 10...

CENTRAL FLORIDA

FROM THE

EDITOR

During the creation of this issue, that is partially dedicated to music, my eyes were opened. It is unbelievable how much music effects us! Through the highs and lows in life, music is there to inspire, motivate, relax, and entertain us. With so many different genres available, their truly is something for every generation. It is amazing how my taste changes through the years and I never know what I am going to gravitate towards next. Growing up it had to be super loud and borderline out of control. Punk rock’s finest and gangster rap is what appealed to me. As the years tacked on, for me, my taste of music has changed to some extent. I still have my classics that draw up so many memories, but now I appreciate other genres that I never enjoyed in the past. As I interviewed several musicians, I started to realize that they think so much differently about life and music inspires each of us differently. As a musician there is so much that relies on your next song you write. It is one profession that one day your living a normal life, and the next day you can be traveling the world chasing billboard ratings. From the artists that I interviewed, what I took from it the most, is you have to be completely dedicated and love what you do. Whether you are in the studio creating albums or touring the country, you have to absorb life and continue to chase your dream. Live the life you love, and love the life you live. Thanks to all the talented musicians that are featured in this issue of Fluid. We have all the faith in the world in your skills, and don’t forget about us when you make your mark on music history.

Where do you live? Currently Orlando, but moving is one of my hobbies. Originally from? Born in London, England but have lived in Florida since I was 5! Occupation? I am a full time student, model and I bartend on the weekends at my favorite place, The Attic Orlando! Where would your dream trip take you? Wow, dream trip? Well, I suffer from a pretty serious case of wanderlust. My dream trip, to be honest, would be one that never ended, because there are too many beautiful places that I’m desperate to explore. So, I’m afraid I cannot pick just one. I love being around nature and different cultures. The world has such infinite beauty, and I hope to be lucky enough to experience all the wonders this world has to offer. How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Haha, oh man. Well, I am quite happy to say that the only social media account I use is instagram, because I like the pretty pictures, as silly as that sounds. I am not on facebook or twitter or any other outlet, and, quite truthfully, I don’t know how people still function in life with all those distractions. Most important thing on a first date? Um… bring a change of clothes? I tend to be pretty clumsy. First date with my boyfriend I threw an entire strawberry and banana smoothie over him, guess I was nervous! Turn on’s? Great smile and an even greater sense of humor! Nothing is sexier than a happy man who can make a woman happier! Turn off’s? Big ego and bad hygiene, yuck! Real House Wives or Sunday Night Football? Haha uhhh, is Family Guy an option? If you had to be locked in a room for 24 hours with Marilyn Manson or Dennis Rodman, who would you choose? Oh definitely Marilyn Manson! I have no doubt he would have some wildly interesting things to say! How long does it take you to get ready if you are going out? 35 to 45 minutes usually, have to give or take 10 mins for necessary song and dance solos in my bathroom. Dogs or cats? I love both, however, I am allergic to cats. So, I do favor my monster man,Harley, who is a hundred pound German Shepherd and runs my life. Perfect Date? My perfect date needs nothing more than a comfy couch, a good bottle of wine, a movie and, of course, a cuddle partner! Beach, River, or Asphalt? BEACH BEACH BEACH!! Best Beach in Florida? Well, considering I grew up going to my families beach house in New Smyrna every weekend from the age of 8 onwards and have some of my fondest memories and friends there, I will have to say New Smyrna Beach. Favorite celebrity? Ian Somerhalder… drooool Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artists? Surfers! Favorite Spot to have a good night out? (Central Florida) The Attic ..duh! Best cure for a bad hangover? Sprite and some greasy food! I love Fluid magazine becausE... They let me spray bottles of champagne like a wild child?? What does the future hold for the lovely Natasha? Oh, I wish I knew! It’s exciting to think of the future, my blank slate. I think that as long as I continue to do what I believe is right for me, I will end up where I’m supposed to be and most importantly, happy.

Zen Bistro Authentic Thai Cuisine TASTE OF ZEN

EAT

All too often, we see a great little gem of a restaurant lose its sparkle when making the transition to a new location. Just a few simple oversights can change what made them great. However, with careful planning, Zen Bistro took meticulous steps in order to build upon the already excellent quality of food and service. Curry is still king at the new location, but the sautéed dishes and noodles are not to be overlooked. Traditional dishes like Papaya salad, Pad Thai, Ginger sauté, and Seafood Basil (pictured) are steadily flowing from the kitchen.

PHOTOS: RUDDY

Over the past half decade, Zen Bistro Authentic Thai Cuisine has been working hard to build a committed, local following. They began in their smaller, “hole-in-the-wall,” Bay Street location, which seated only thirty guests. Since May of 2013, Zen Bistro has found their permanent home at a new location: 223 Magnolia Avenue, off Beach Street, in downtown Daytona Beach.

The first and most important improvement is the size. The inside dining room seats more than twice the number of guests, roughly seventy. Additionally, the new location features an outside Zen Bar, private resort-style outdoor dining, and lounge area. Due to the limited space and simple decor at the former location, much of what guests grew to know (and love) was the consistency of the kitchen and proficiency of the staff. Both have remained the highest of priority to Zen Bistro. Zen Bistro has quite literally transformed from a quaint cafe into a full-scale, quality dining experience. While maintaining the reputation of the Best Thai Restaurant and Best Take-Out in the area, Zen sets its sights on a few carefully selected new elements: specialty dishes, fresh sake cocktails, and a growing nightlife around the outdoor fire-pit and U-shaped bar. Keeping up their obvious high standards and passion for food, Zen Bistro has solidified its place as a requisite stop in Daytona Beach, for locals and travelers alike. Please make reservations for large parties and weekends. Seeking balance? Put some Zen in your life!

“Hunting is the only thing I’ve found that gives me the same rush as dropping into a wave at Pipe!”

“Hunting is the only thing I’ve found that gives me the same rush as dropping into a wave at Pipe!” - After a successful wild hog hunt, a wide eyed Evan Geiselman was eager to share his passion for something that he discovered somewhere he never thought possible, on dry ground! Anyone that knows anything about American surfing knows about the Geiselman dynasty. Our proud east coast eyes have been glued to Evan (aka Gold) ever since he was a pint sized mini-Slater spanking every

wide stance menehune he surfed against. His magnetic personality and natural surfing talent continues to make Evan a fan favorite. But like most professional athletes there comes a time when the sport stops being a hobby, and starts becoming a job. Sure, the thought of traveling around the world surfing in all types of tropical locations may seem like a never-ending vacation, but no matter how good it sounds, after enduring that lifestyle for over 10 years, you might find yourself just flat out over it! The once outlet you had to relieve any tension, has now become the very thing that brings you

stress. It’s at this point that athletes find themselves in slumps, and take their first steps toward, “taking a break”. So how does this young man balance his life so well? The answer is simple; he’s found another way through nature to provide a cathedral of escape. Here is an interview with our local hero, and his new found hobby that may be the change in his young surfing career...

FLUID: Hey Evan, what were you doing just before you started this interview? EG: I just woke up its 7:04am in Australia. FLUID: Coming off a great performance at Pipeline, did you feel like you had good momentum going into the event at Manly (AU OPEN)? EG: I made a few heats over in Hawaii and had a really good heat over there. So, for me, it was really good for my mental state going into Aus Open. I’m extremely excited to compete right now. FLUID: Next stop on the tour is Newcastle, what’s your game plan? EG: I made it through my first round yesterday, but I’m just taking it heat by heat.

I know what I need to do to make it, but it comes down to preparation for it. I’m feeling really good, so we’ll see how the rest of the event goes. FLUID: What events do you think best suit your surfing this year? EG: Aus Open is a good event. it’s like Smyrna, haha, but I’m the most excited for Lowers! I’ve won events out there and surf that more than any other prime stop. FLUID: We want to know about your new excitement for hunting, why is it something that you have embraced? EG: Greg Arnette took me out to his ranch one day along with my dad. He put a bow in my hand at the archery range and I’ve been hooked. Then, when you’re actually hunting and you get your opportunity, your heart starts beating so fast! It’s hard to explain, but it’s awesome! FLUID: Have you ever felt like you were frustrated with surfing and has hunting helped you maintain your focus? EG: Not really frustrated but surfing wasn’t probably my main focus like it is right now. I love to hunt, but I’ve figure out my priorities and what I want to accomplish in my surf career. So hunting is a fun hobby to have. FLUID: How can hunting compare with surfing pipeline? EG: The adrenaline that you get from both are the same. I’ve been really enjoying

getting an adrenaline rush lately, which kinda scares me haha!

FLUID: Did you ever have a negative feeling toward hunting, if so how has that changed for you? EG: Well, for me, if I’m going to kill it, I’m going to eat it, so there’s nothing going to waste when I hunt. A lot of people don’t understand that, so I’d say that’s the only negative that bums me out. FLUID: Does hunting give you a similar connection with nature as with surfing? EG: Yes. There’s no better feeling then sitting out in the woods listening to all the

subtle movements you hear out there. The temptation of a big hog or buck coming in, but just being out doors, I’ve learned to really appreciate it.

FLUID: What advice would you have for a young professional athlete that might feel burnt out ? EG: You realize how much you love something when you don’t do it. I had an injury a couple years back. I have never been so fired up to surf when I came back, but I started competing too early and losing a lot and was just second guessing myself. That’s when I knew I had to take a different approach. I’m now the most excited I’ve ever been to surf and compete this year. FLUID: What is the biggest lesson you have learned from last year? Believe in myself and not to second guess my decisions. Last year was a blessing. EG: I learned so much from losing and what I need to do to make it to the big leagues. FLUID: Who and/or what do you feel is going to be the biggest influence on your surfing this year and why? EG: My influence comes for the World Tour and wanting to be there so bad. FLUID: Evan, thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview. Any

last shout outs?

EG: Thank you to my family! My friends! Everyone who supports me! I wouldn’t

be where I am today without NSB and everyone I grew up with surfing at the inlet, so thank you! THEF LU ID M AG.C OM 27

Hometown? Satellite Beach, FL… Adam grew up in the boonies of Canaveral Groves. Where and when did you guys make your first music? I started recording songs on my own in Jacksonville when I lived there, and Adam and I started playing shows shortly after that. He just had this energy on the drums that lifted everything up. What type of music do you make? Hopefully the kind that makes you feel nice, takes you somewhere else sometimes, or enhances whatever you are tripping on, whether that be life or something else. You all are dropping a new albums soon, correct? We are recording our first full length all of March in Satellite Beach with Nick Benik. Really excited to work with him and make these demos come to life. Writing songs and demoing them is all we have been doing since we moved to L.A., so it will be nice to get them out. We heard that you guys have been making a few transitions. New booking agent and what is the game plan for the future? Yeah, we are excited about the team we have behind us and are looking forward to touring this summer to start playing those new songs more and more. Talking with you, it sounds like you have a crazy schedule. Where are you headed the next few moths? Recording all of March here in Florida and then back to

L.A. for some shows in April. And then we will see... Whom or what has been the biggest influence to your music? Our friends. We are really lucky to have such talented friends that inspire us in what they do. What is the highlight of your career so far, guys? Just getting to meet the people we have met in various places we have gotten to go to play music.

Largest venue you’ve ever played? We’ve played maybe some bigger ones, but the coolest one we ever have was the Bataclan in Paris. Edith Piaf sang there and it was so beautiful, and the crowd was so energetic. What Central Florida bands do you like to hear live? Jacie and the Nick Nacks, Fight the Swing, Darkhorse Saloon, Konglom

Best thing about living in Florida? Thunderstorms, I miss them so much.

What do you think of the Central Florida Music scene? There are def some rad bands and little hubs starting to sprout.

Favorite venue to play at in Central Florida? Where ever my mom and dad and sister are dancing with their eyes closed.

What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Blood orange San Pellegrino. It’s a vacation in every sip. And avocados, lots of those.

If you didn’t have a music career what would you be doing for a living? Hmmm, I was coordinating art shows for a couple years before we started playing music, so maybe something like that. Adam would probably be offering himself up for new psychedelic drug clinical studies.

Where can we find out more about your music? We have blog at http://swimmmusic.tumblr.com/ Where I write about kinda everything and anything but a lot about tour experiences and what not. Some really wonderfully strange things happen out there. Also we have a website...www.SWIMMmusic.com

Does your tour include stops in other countries? We have gotten to tour through Europe and Japan and both were mind blowing. Hopefully we will get back this year.

Thanks for being part of our music issue, any last shout outs? Shout out to the Schwiezer family for all being absolutely amazing and showing me more fun times in New Smyrna than I ever thought I’d have. Love love love them, especially that pretty Autumn girl.

Best Advice another musician has given you? “Keep going” - Damion Suomi

PR: I don’t really know, but yeah okay, haha! BP: Haha, yeah man! PR: Your career has been pretty successful. What would you consider your highest achievement in the music world? BP: Oh man, I don’t know about the highest achievement, but I’ve traveled all over the world playing music, you know? I’ve been to Africa, Europe(six times), I played in Israel last year. That was cool. PR: Tell us about playing in Africa. BR: There’s a Jazz festival in Morocco, “Tanger”. They call it “tan-jazz”, but it’s like Jazz and world music, so you hear music from all over the world. PR: Who and/or what has been the biggest influence on your music? BR: Man I grew up on a 14 mile long dirt road, so what are you gonna do? Cow tipping and picking guitar, haha, so I guess where I grew up. PR: Do you think the generation coming up is embracing blues music? BP: No, no I don’t, haha. I don’t think my generation embraces blues music to tell you the truth. The only place I know that embraces blues music is Mississippi, haha. Yeah, they embrace it. PR: Tell us about Mississippi blues music? BP: Maybe it’s because it’s been there so long, but you could go to a bar tonight in Mississippi, and I guarantee you, there’s someone in there playing some real good, real blues music. PR: What is real good blues music? BP: If you have to ask, you don’t know, haha. That’s what they say.

BEN PRESTAGE WORLD TRAVELER ONE-MAN BAND

Age: 34 Currently resides in: Vero Beach, Florida PR: Ben, where and when did you make your first music? BP: I grew up out in Indian town, and I probably started making music when I was 10 years old, haha. PR: Always blues music? BP: Haha, yeah I grew up playing the trumpet, guitars, and my neighbor at the time played banjo, so I learned some banjo from him, haha. PR: Tell us more about growing up? BP: Haha, yeah my dad’s from Mississippi, and my grand dads from Mississippi, so that’s where all the blues shit comes from, you know? So I grew up listening to that stuff, and now I just do what I kinda do, you know?

PR: Where’s your favorite venue to play in Central Florida? BP: Probably Will’s Pub in Orlando. It’s a great place! PR: How would you describe Florida swamp blues? BP: Someone asked me that before. Shit, I dunno know? Florida swamp blues? PR: What’s the best advise another musician has given you? BP: Probably to be original and do your own thing, don’t copy anyone, and that’s true. Do your own thing, and be yourself, and when you’re on stage, be yourself. If you feel like shit, feel like shit, and express that to the people. If you feel good and it’s party time, express that to the people. Just be yourself. PR: How many albums have you released, and do you have another album releasing soon? BP: I have six albums right now, and I just released a new one this month, which is a double disc live album recorded at Will’s Pub. All songs I’ve never recorded before too, haha. PR: Where can we find that? BR: You can find that on my website, BenPrestageMusic.com PR: Thanks for taking the time tonight Ben. Any last shout outs? BR: Haha, no problem! I’d say Joe & Cara Collins out in Sarasota and Don & Kelsey down in Port St. Lucie, haha - them are the ones! THEF LU ID M AG.C OM 33

EDDIE FIELDS Eddie Fields has been playing drums and keyboards since he was 5 years old. At an early age he was completely fascinated with music and all aspects of it, and at the age of 36 nothing has changed. Talking with Eddie, his passion for music is overwhelming. He draws you in and lets you know how much music means to him. Eddie has been blind from birth, which in no way hinders this amazing musician. It has been his path in life, and he completely embraces his career as a musician and continues to excel. Eddie enjoys performing live with various local area bands as well as record music in his studio. Homebase? New Smyrna Beach. Bands that you currently jam with? I work with a lot of different groups. ChicknSoup - I describe that as a Community jazz group. Shawn Earnest and I are doing our thing. Friends of ours, Dan and Keith, jam with us. Captive Eddie’s in Gainsville is another band, they are a songwriter group. Billy dean and I get down a lot. Another buddy I like to jam with is Ryan from the Transfers. I enjoy jamming with the Cuchetti family. I get down with a lot of people. I feel like it’s cool to jam with people. I never want to put it all in one particular project. I just like to keep pouring out the music. Where and when did you make your first music? I started recording music when I was kid, I hooked rca cables to my keyboard and that is where it all started. I switched to a school in St Augustine in 4th grade and was there till my senior year. This place was awesome, they would let us go in there and record music all the time. Remembering back to that school, every chance I had I was recording stuff back then. At a regular public school they would never have had stuff like that. It really helped me excel way more than I could ever imagine. I feel so fortunate to have that time at the school in St Augustine. They even let me take the recording equipment home over the summer one year, think it was around 10th grade. That helped so much. I would sit around that equipment back then night and day. Man

you are bringing a lot of great memories back up. It’s great to talk to you about it. Thanks! What type of Music do you make? What I am doing as far my thing, I call it texturing. It sounds like jazz I guess you’d say. I describe it as the materials that you would use to build something. Lots of times I have melody, even my own life. I put tones and voices all together and texture everything. Building stuff from scratch, piano, guitars, organs, any texture of instruments. I love it all!! I like to look at music very openly. You got to let things flow, balance of the funk. Anything that makes you feel the soul. Who or what has been the biggest influence to your music? Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. I listened to them alot growing up. From that came older Miles Davis and guys like that. Anything that makes my mind want to keep pushing. Ruben Morgan and Lindsey Morris also have been influential. Favorite venue to play at in Central Florida? Maloneys off Canal St. in NSB is a great venue for music. Jim captives that zone. For me music has to raise the mind-set to grow or be conscious. Cafe Davinci’s in Deland pulls on that some with its outdoor atmosphere. In Orlando, Guana Guana is a really good venue. Best Advice another musician has given you? This is a good question. Lindsey Morris back in the day, he played with Allman brothers. And I played with him some in my early days. He said to me, “keep playing music, don’t worry about the girls, they will always be there, keep playing music.” What Central Florida bands do you like to hear live? To tell the truth, if I am not out playing somewhere, I am not usually out checking people out. A few people that come to mind are Dennis’s bands, Hair of the Beast and Rammer. What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Nothing. You know why, because after I go shopping I will eat everything in my fridge. haha. So, right now Sprite and a few random things. What is your drink of choice? I love orange juice! Lots of apple juice. I like to make

smoothies. I rarely drink but I might have a magic hat. I might do a shot of tequila on a rare occasion, even though it is bad for your body, but you only live once. Thanks for being part of our music feature, any last shout outs? All the musicians that cultivate and keep doing the creative stuff that you’ve been doing. Music turns the wheel of consciousness. Musicians need to keep it real and keeping it moving. Keep it fire, keep it lit up and keep energy moving peoples energy along. Interview by Editor: Bryan Forand - Interviewing Eddie was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with the magazine. I guess the easiest way to sum it up was, it was super enjoyable! It felt good and was amazing to have Eddie completely open up and stir up lots of classic memories. I had Eddie’s good friend Shawn Earnest read the interview prior to print and his claim was, “Bro, where do I begin. That’s the best interview I’ve ever read. Taught me more about Eddie than I’ve even ever knew, The intro is perfect.” THEF LU ID M AG.C OM 35

EVAN TAYLORJONES Hometown? Orlando, Florida Where and when did you make your first music? I wrote my first song in the room from the house that I grew up in. It was 2010. I remember it like it was yesterday, though. What type of music do you make? I make a good mix of classic soul with blues, rock, and pop influences. How much has your life changed from when I first met you, a few years ago, to now? Bryan, I remember playing for your wedding! I gotta thank you again for that blessing. Demand such as that is what keeps artists, like myself, going. Life has been great. No changes really, all improvement. I’ve always just done the best I can at taking advantage of every opportunity, staying busy and keeping my priorities in order. I’ve still got a ton of work to do, of course, but it is looking forward to it (the work) that has kept my career on the up and coming. If I didn’t look forward to the hard work, if I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be in this interview with you.

Who or what has been the biggest influence to your music? Thomas Jefferson said, “Every generation deserves a revolution.” I don’t really know much about him, but what he said is inspiring to me. I believe that and I’m working towards that by bringing back the old soul feel of music and making it popular. Influences for me include any revolutionary musician/artist, really. They paved a way.

My biggest influence, though, is certainly my mother. Every song is for her. Favorite venue to play at in Central Florida? As of right now, my favorite venue to perform at in Orlando is The Social on Orange avenue, in the heart of downtown. I adore the intimacy. It’s a pretty big place with a great stage, a pit for the crowd, bar and bar stools for the folks who want to sit and drink, great lighting and sound, and we always pack the place! I’ve been to your shows, and the ladies pretty much flock to you. Are you living the relationship life or single and ready to mingle life? I am Mr. Lonely and loving it. I really don’t have patience for this generation of girls as it is. I won’t get in too deep but fear and confidence are what separate a girl from a woman. Love in thyself is what allows us to evolve, individually. I’m not seeing enough growth and that’s not something I have time to deal with. There will come along a woman for me one day, though. Maybe... For now, I’m just mingling, I guess you could say, and I am happy. If you didn’t have a music career, what would you be doing for a living? Without this music, I would be working at Whole Foods Market in Winter Park, still, and trying to move on up in the store as an employee. Tell me something random, like your first job was a skydive instructor or your family owns an island in the Caribbean? My great great Grandmother was a 6’7 woman from

Ethiopia. Very random haha Best Advice another musician has given you? The best advice ANYONE has given me, let alone another musician, is to stay humble. What Central Florida bands do you like to hear live? To be honest, Central Florida lacks a real music scene. I couldn’t tell you what bands I really enjoy listening to live or studio cuts through speakers. Some solo artists that I enjoy though, are Palmer Reed, Reggie Williams and Drew Yardis to name a good few. What was the last movie you went to see? The last movie I went to see was Anchorman 2. What would I find in your refrigerator right now? In my refrigerator lies food that belongs to my roommates. Haha, I’m not home enough anymore to grocery shop and cook, unfortunately. Lots of shows and free food from the venues is a blessing. What is your drink of choice? My drink of choice, alcohol wise, is Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Whiskey straight, or with ginger ale, chilled but not on the rocks. My non alcoholic drink of choice is some good orange juice. No exact brand, just fresh squeezed. Where can we find out more about your music? My music is now available on all online music stores from iTunes to Amazon. Simply search the name of my new album, “Songs From An Old Soul.” You can also follow me on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat using the the handle @EvanTaylorJones. Or if you’d be so kind and ‘like’ my music fan page on Facebook at Facebook. com/EvanTaylorJonesMusic that would be much appreciated. Thanks being part of our music issue, any last shout outs ETJ? Shout out to my big band of brothers and sisters of The Evan Taylor Jones Music Crew. I love all those guys! Shout out to my manager Andrew Maffetone, the independent label and studio I record at, Anchorage Records and Sunray Recording. Shout out to ALL of my fans and supporters everywhere! And to save the best for last, shout out to my Family and the almighty God, Jah Rastafari. Give Thanks and thank YOU all at Fluid Magazine for making this happen!
