NOTE
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
It’s been a crazy year so far, and it seems like everything is constantly changing at a rapid pace. Has this year really flown by this fast or what?! It’s already summertime, and we are in the thick of it! The heat is unbearable and, no doubt, so are the masses. Our little beach towns keep getting more crowded and congested by the minute and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Everywhere we look there is some type of new construction, annoying stoplights, and constant traffic that fills each crevice of our coastal towns in Central Florida. In towns such as New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange and Ormond Beach, the developer kooks are knocking down every tree they can find to clear land for new homes. It’s already hard to get around town now, and it will be really challenging in the next few years to come. At times if feels like we are a magnet and all the forces are blasting in our direction. The walls are caving in on our little slice of heaven, and it becomes harder to spread our wings and have room to flow. What can you do? When something is enjoyable, people gravitate towards it. Regardless of all the unnecessary growth, we have it pretty good. You have to remember, we live where people vacation. Unlike the cold northern states, our weather is pretty much warm year round. You can surf, fish, and spend time on the water virtually any day of the year. Florida has over 8,000 miles of shoreline, if you count inlets, bays, and capes. We have rivers, lakes and beaches everywhere we look, and best of all, we live in boardshorts and bikinis (when we aren't grinding a nine to fiver). That alone should keep the positive vibes flowing and peace signs plentiful. This time of year the days are long and the nights are longer, get out and enjoy the summer! Make sure to never forget how lucky we are to live in this place we call home. Most importantly, get out on the water today! Bryan Forand | Editor

Age: 19 Where do you live? Melbourne Beach/Jacksonville Originally from? Melbourne Beach, Florida Occupation? I work for Catalyst Surf Shop but my main job is being a full-time student at the University of North Florida, #swoop. Where would your dream trip take you? It sounds cliché but probably Indo. Or honestly anywhere that I can lay on a beach, eat copious amounts of food, and watch good surf. Tell us something about you that might surprise us? Last year I had heart surgery to correct my atrioventricular nodal reentrant supraventricular tachycardia. Say that 5x fast. How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Even though I only have Instagram, (@maggiecain8) it consumes an embarrassing amount of my time. My boss frequently calls me out on it. If you were a skittle, what color would you be and why? Green, because it gives off the illusion that it’s healthier than it really is. When you listen to music, to you pay attention to lyrics or the melodies and beats? All of it for sure, but it can be hard to find bands that crush it in all of those aspects. That’s why The Strokes are my favorite- they have lyrics, melodies and beats for every mood I’m in. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I get to pretend like I know how to use makeup. Real House Wife's or Sunday Night Football? My fantasy picks may suck but I promise I’m paying attention… Phins Up! Got a boyfriend? Nope Worst Pickup Line? “Did you sit on sugar because that ass is sweet” -guy at Jax Pier. Most important thing on a first date? Be a gentleman and don’t be on your phone! If you had to live in another state besides Florida, which state would you choose and why? Does Puerto Rico count? I would move to Isabela in a heartbeat! Everyone is so kind and I could get away with eating arepas for every meal. Best Beach in Florida? NSB is cool but Sebastian Inlet will always have my heart. Favorite celebrity? I don’t think she counts as a celebrity but Dane Reynolds wife, Courtney, is my idol. She’s hilarious and their dog, Pam. I highly recommend looking them up. Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarders, Musicians or Artist? I mean the ideal guy fits all those categories but surfers definitely stay winning. I love Fluid magazine because? Central Florida, and more specifically the East Coast, is so underrated. Fluid really works to capture all the awesome things that go on throughout it. What does the future hold for the lovely Maggie? I’m going to school for Nutrition & Dietetics, and I’m about to start my junior year. Once I graduate I want to work in a holistic medicine and health setting, but until then I look forward to just traveling as much as I can.

When you visit Lost Lagoon you can sure tell that it's all about family and friends. It all starts with how you treat your patrons and employees. The owners of Lost Lagoon, Matt and Brandi, are firm believers that everyone is a friend who walks in the front door of their restaurant. The inside of Lost Lagoon has a feel like Cheers, "everyone knows your name." As you enter, Matt and Brandi will greet you with a big ole “HEY! Once you are inside, grab a bar stool or table, and look at the menu, but let me make it easy on you. Order one of their specialty burgers! One that we highly recommend is the brunch burger. It's topped with a fried egg, bacon, and white American cheese. Or, if you want to try our personal favorite, the Bula Burger is out of this world. The Bula Burger comes with a juicy pineapple, teriyaki sauce and melted Swiss cheese. Oh yeah, it's amazing! It will be the best burger you've ever had. Just give it a try. We'll stand by that claim. Although the burger and a frosty beverage are my go to, there are other options that will keep you coming back. Lost Lagoon offers great choices; like their famous cheesesteak sandwich, salads, and delicious wings. In addition to great lunch and dinner options, the Sunday Brunch is one of New Smyrna's best kept secrets. Although great food makes a restaurant successful, Lost Lagoon has other attributes to keep in mind. Lost Lagoon has live music and is a great spot to host parties. They also have you covered for off location events. The Lost Lagoon "party bus" converts into a mobile stage. It's all about rock and roll! Next time you are looking for a great night out, you know where to go! Lost Lagoon is a local favorite for families, businessmen, regulars, the Fluid crew, the lunch crowd, and the happy hour guys. With their amazing food and laid-back atmosphere, Lost Lagoon has created quite a following in New Smyrna Beach. Whether you dine in at Lost Lagoon or order the best burger in town to-go, tell them the Fluid Crew sent you! bestburgernsb.com | (386) 366-3360 2004 N Dixie Fwy, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168 19

Where are you based out of? We are based out of Ormond Beach/Daytona. Originally from? I’m originally from Hawaii. I was born on Oahu, moved around a few, went to high school in Kona on the Big Island for two years, and then ended up in Ormond, where I finished high school at Seabreeze. Chuck, how did you get your start in the music scene? I joined a band called Vivid, which turned into Seven sisters, back in high school, which consisted of 3/5’s Seabreeze and the other 2 guys we’re from Spruce Creek. One of the Creekers was Jeremy Mix from the duo, “Jam. We did the original music circuit around Central Florida for a good number of years. Towards the end of that original band, in an Orlando adventure, Jeremy and I did an acoustic duo on the side for cash. He ended up moving to New York briefly. I stayed, did solo acoustic gigs, took a hiatus from playing in a band and raised kids. But then a few years later I joined a few old friends that needed a singer for there band that had already established playing out around Daytona. It turned into The Click. How did you come up with the band's name? Pretty lazily.... I remember I was tired of thinking up names and just knew that our rhythm section clicked...
How long have you all been singing and playing instruments? I’ve been playing guitar and singing since 15. Click members are Jimmy Cunningham on lead guitar, Chris Hopkins on drums and Matt Smith on bass. We all have played music since young teens. Do you play music full time or have a side job? I can’t handle having someone telling me what to do all day. Thank God I’m decent enough to do this full time! Who's your favorite local band (besides your own, of course)? Well, I have to give props to my boy and his lovely wife Andrea, with their duo and original band, Jam and Are Friends Electric! Where will you and the band be 5 years from now? Not sure, didn’t expect to be playing in a steadily working cover band for this many years. I’d say I will get back into original music very soon. If you could tour with any band of your
choosing, who would it be with? Can the Police come back? If not, I’m good with 311. It’s not completely about the musical artist for me. I’m thinking who’s fans would be the most fun. The other guys in my band would say other bands like Guns or Van Halen. Our bass player, Matt, would say some Swedish black death metal band I’ve never heard of before. We all have different tastes in music hence our wide ranged set list and repertoire. Favorite venue to play? Nope, we like them all. Flagler Tavern and Finns have the best crowds, though. đ&#x;˜‰ If you had to describe your music in less than five words? Fun, clean, alive, variety, tight. What do you think your "greatest opportunity" has been thus far in your music career? Being able to play music that I love for a living, hands down. Anything you'd like to add? The stage is yours. Just want to say thanks to Ruddy, Beefer and Fluid for the page! 21

What equipment do you prefer to use? Canon 5D Mark lll Mac with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop What's a normal day in your life look like? Normal day starts at 9am at the Speedway Custom Photo Lab until 6pm and then Editing & shooting until about 2am every night. Give us a little background on how you got into photography. I was always the kid with the camera. I had photo albums and shoe boxes filled with photos from over the years. You are constantly working with gorgeous models, lucky guy! How did you get involved with shooting the top models in our area? Social media and word of mouth has helped us work with some of the best talents in our area. What inspires you? I like to help others win. Our models, make up artists, local businesses and clothing brands are my inspiration. I want to be the best at what I do so that it may help others succeed. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to becoming a photographer? Most definitely! Scott Thomas and Greg Hunter are both photographers that have mentored me along the way. My photography is always a group effort. It’s rarely just the client and myself. ISB Studios started out as an idea between myself and the late Craig Devine. Before he passed in 2016, Craig was

at almost every shoot and helping me get my start. Since, Aj Costa, Jessica Tullas, and Brian Cannons; aka “DrunkCarl", have been my main support group. What is your favorite place to shoot? Washington Oaks Beach What do you enjoy the most about being a photographer in our area? Daytona Beach has been home for 10 years now. Giving the spotlight to our city and those living here has to be my most enjoyable part about this. Any trips planned for 2018? Las Vegas and The Bahamas Are you currently working on any new projects? Reopening the Photo Lab with Greg Hunter. Greg and I are planning some big group shoots in the future, as well. Stay tuned! Do you have a few tips for young aspiring photographers? Im an open book and always love to help aspiring photographers with anything they need to know. Social media has changed the way we look at art and connecting with the world. Don’t get caught up in the hype of being am Instastar. Just keep shooting and learning your craft. Any Last words or shout outs? Ride in Paradise, Craig Devine. Thank you to all that support Team ISB and thank you Fluid Magazine! #cantstop #wontstop
What was your favorite thing about growing up surfing the playground known as Ponce Inlet? My favorite thing about Ponce would have to be how quiet it can be down there. It's so peaceful, and not to mention that it's the most ripple right wedge around! I'm usually out there with great friends and the vibe is amazing. Not to mention the real locals, the sharks. I really miss those little guys. Ponce definitely has my heart.
to do. We were so close to leaving the island breaking even! Luckily our good friend LJ, at Pure Life surf school, was on the island. So he drove over, did some Spanish jeopardy with a mechanic, and then he called a buddy. Then a gangster, with hundreds in his hands, pulls up. He watched us from across the parking lot before finally driving over and giving us some cash for the junk Ford Exploder. Voilà, we were riding back with Mr. LJ and a little pocket change to go with. Cheers, PR !!!!
Who is someone you've always looked up to in our surf community? I honestly don’t know, there are so many legends. If I had to say one, Chad Doyle is the guy I remember blowing my mind on his longboard, yes a longboard! He would be standing perched like a giraffe's third eye hanging ten on well overhead waves at the inlet! It will be etched in my mind forever! Here are some of the OG's - Rannie, Ajay, Sixtoes, Korn, Big Jerry, Brill, Ricky Pasternak..the list could go on and on.
You were a standout at the WRV Outer Banks Pro in 2017. Tell us more about that event and why you entered the contest with the alias of Johnny Tsunami? It's a long story! Hence the full edit coming soon SPONSORED BY( …………) working on IT! haha
Best surf trip you've been on? I would have to say Puerto Rico. We went for 2 months with a few friends. My friends, Eric and Sam, and I bought a car that trip. We were unaware at the time of the purchase that the car didn't have the proper paper. So when it broke down in the ghetto of Arecibo, 2 hours from our home, we really had our backs to the wall. With only 3 days left in the trip and the car was gonna be sold for 50 more dollars than we bought it for. We didn't know what
Tell me about a life changing event? Unfortunately, when I was on that trip to Puerto rico with my good friends Eric and Sam the goal was to make it happen, haha. I had saved some money, bought a handcam and went down with one goal in mind; to get the best clips possible with friends, make an edit, blow up, or something, haha, you know. But, when I had received the news my mom had cancer, I didn’t know what to do or have the knowledge of how bad it was! Only a few days later I received the call. t was not easy! What is the biggest wave you ever caught? It was a long time ago down in PR. It was easy 15 to 25 foot faces, Florida boy measurements,

haha. I almost died paddling out at Domes all alone, of course. Nobody wanted to surf and I quickly found out why. I then realized I needed to get in. If you have been there you know the cliff in-between Domes and Marias, and if you don’t, google it. Anyway, I surfed a wave from about 500 yards straight out from the east side of the cliff all the way to the beach bar parking lot at Marias! I was stoked I found a ledge mid face on an easy 25ft wave. Eventually, after I collected myself, I did the biggest claim of my life mid wave! To make it better, there were about 8 or 9 people on the cliff and 5 or 6 of them were claiming it harder than me, hahaha! Favorite places to eat in town? Fresh fish cooked at home or with friends is the Florida special! But, I can’t forget about Cafe du Japan ol granny house, haha, and Pats River Front Breakfast is legend! What are your plans for the rest of 2018? It’s simple but not so simple, haha. Probably lots of surfing, traveling, learning, eating good, and maybe some contests! Gonna make a bunch of short edits, and I'm really pushing for a web series or something along those lines!! Any shout outs or last words? I would first like to thank you guys for showing the love, but most of all I want to thank all the amazing people, good and bad, that I’ve met and have had the honor of knowing and growing with over the years up an down the coast! You guys and gals are truly one of a kind and I love you all!

What are three items you never leave the dock without? Sat phone, plenty of water, and sunscreen What is your favorite species to target? Definitely Wahoo, Tuna, and Snook Preferred Rig? Topwater and Flies when the bites on! Why types of fishing charters do you offer? I offer charters across the board from inshore skinny water with my 18' Waterman Skiff to the creeks and inlets on my 24' Pathfinder. I also run a 31' Contender rigged for anything offshore from trolling, bottom fishing, and running the beaches for migrating Cobia and Tarpon. Who is your favorite person to fish with and why? Without a doubt, my two daughters. It's not as much about the catch anymore as it is passing on to them what made me love what I do today. It's just really amazing seeing it replay thru their eyes and how stoked they are to be on the water. Tell us more about your the Back to Blue brand. I really dig the clothing! Our brand basically started without us knowing that we were even building a brand. That's the coolest part about it. Shea Lopez and I began printing basic shirts to wear for filming with our friends Casey Collins, Matt Maloy and my brother Travis while on surfing and fishing trips. When people began to want to buy our shirts we were stoked and then eventually shifted our focus to offer a better product that fit good and was comfortable. Our buddy Matty came up with some cool designs in the beginning and we slowly moved forward from there. As of today, our product is now offered in many coastal area surf shops plus online at www.backtoblue.com. It's definitely growing and wherever it goes from here I am grateful for the experiences. What attributes separate an OK fishing guide compared to what you would consider a great guide? That's funny! I didn't start guiding on purpose. If someone asked me if I would be a professional fishing guide when I was younger I would have laughed. I really just put a lot of years into learning the waters personally before being asked if I would be interested in taking someone fishing. I thought they were crazy to offer money for something I really would be glad to do anyways. That's the two things that separate the pack in this business. Love for what you do always shows and the years on the water to know it better than anyone else. OK
guides don't last! You cannot fake it out here. Eventually they end up desperately selling discounted trips and the next year they are gone. Just like any other business, I guess. What do you feel is the biggest challenge with being a guide in our area? Population expansion, pollution and bad sciences is our biggest challenge! There is not just one reason. Our population has exploded on a limited resource. With population comes tons of pollution and coastal development. There is only so much pressure that these ecosystems can handle and Mosquito Lagoon is a perfect example of that. If you get caught with a Red Snapper you lose your boat and your fishing privileges but when our Local and State Government granted the permits that allowed the development and pollution of our public waters it was just an oops! That is our biggest challenge not only fishermen and guides, but it's our worlds biggest challenge as well. Can you tell me about how you got into guiding and how you got to where you are today? I started guiding in 1998 because I was offered $400.00 to take someone fishing in Mosquito Lagoon for a few hours. I was going anyways and thought that was unreal. After I started fishing clients regularly I kept that same flow and was lucky to meet a lot of amazing people along the way. When you have the good fortune to spend hours daily with really intelligent and successful people it lets you absorb the knowledge of how to get to the next level. I just kept saving and buying bigger
boats to offer more even with knowing that the lagoon was a dying resource. Do you fish tournaments? Not personally on my own boats, but when I get the opportunity to tournament fish with friends, I'm up for the challenge. Do you have a rival when it comes to fishing competitively? No, not currently, but there's always competition on the water. What’s your most embarrassing fishing story/ memory? There's not much time to be embarrassed when on the water but dumb things do happen out there that we laugh about later and usually don't repeat those mishaps. Where else, besides Florida, have you had the opportunity to fish? I have a flats skiff in The Bahamas and have done a lot of offshore fishing there as well. My brother has places in Nicaragua and Shea has a place in Costa. I've gotten hooked up on a lot of big fish out there. Also spent some time checking out Panama and Mexico but now a days I have just as much fun spending time with my family in the FL Keys or along the coast here. When you live in a great place you don't have to look far to have a great time! Any last words or people to thank? I'm just glad to be able to make a living doing what I love to do, bringing my family up in a laid back community, and enjoying this thing we call life.

You’ve been paying attention to the world around you, so you’re at very least somewhat aware of the popularity and growing acceptability of marijuana use for its medicinal benefits. Every day, clinical herb is catching on more and more and shaking its once commonly marginalized and criticized funky presence. CNN, Newsweek, Youtube, Leafly.com, Netflix (docs and “Disjointed,” etc.) and many other pop sources of information and entertainment have been regularly providing exposure to many

success stories of medical cannabis. The masses are getting to know Mary Jane and becoming aware of her formerly more hidden treasures. In fact, you’re increasingly likely to know someone who is benefitting from the medicinal qualities of weed. So, you know. But did you know that our very own New Smyrna Beach proudly sports a new herb clinic, helpfully named The Herb Clinic? Dr. Jonathan Treece, M.D., a brilliant and sincerely cool, kind, and caring man popularly known from his candidacy on The Bachelorette: Season 13, opened T.H.C. in the Fall of 2017 to serve the community by officially recommending for many the medicinal benefits of marijuana—and providing on site a handful of CBD products. Since Dr. Treece began this clinic only six months ago, he has witnessed significant success among his patients. Dr. Treece continues to practice family medicine but is also investing his expertise in the world of medical cannabis. In all of his practice, Dr. Treece is passionately committed to improving quality of life for his patients. He is succeeding! Read below to find out more about NSB’s T.H.C. from a recent interview between Fluid Magazine and Dr. Treece:

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss The Herb Clinic and the good work you’re doing. First, what inspired you to open T.H.C.? You’re welcome. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to discuss our clinic and our work. I was inspired by what I have found that clearly shows the benefits of medical marijuana use. In short, I was inspired by my desire to better the quality of life for my patients, and responsible doctor-lead marijuana use is clearly bettering many people’s lives. I am personally a very active person, often outdoors riding around New Smyrna in my golf-cart, going SUPing, surfing, bike-riding, running, even skydiving and generally being alive and adventurous; I want my patients to have more of an ability to likewise enjoy their lives. Medical marijuana is a real option for many to have a more fulfilling life. Can you share one of your favorite success stories from T.H.C.? Absolutely. So, I have one patient who is an older man and came in to the clinic wanting to speak with me for the sake of learning about medical marijuana. He had heard of the many potential benefits for those suffering from Parkinson’s and wanted to learn more. Interestingly, this man had never before used marijuana. After talking with him, he and his wife decided medical marijuana would be a good option to pursue. He applied with the state, received his card, and about a month after consistent use his wife came back to the clinic and told me that she hadn’t seen her husband as happy and so able to live life since the time when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s—about a decade ago. I want to point out, medical marijuana is not a cure, but can definitely help improve such a person’s quality of
life. This man was now better able to get up and walk around his neighborhood, sleep, enjoy his days with less and less severe tremors, and he began sleeping better than he had in a very long time. Such stories are pretty common.
another person getting high?” She responded after thinking for a moment, “I don’t know.” So again, I’m happy to educate and converse while emphasizing our commitment to medicinal use and its benefits.
be happy to speak with you and answer any questions. In fact, look out for the date of our upcoming ribbon cutting ceremony with the NSB Chamber of Commerce. Join us for that celebration, and make a point to speak with me.
That’s encouraging to hear. Have you experienced any negative responses from the community and any opposition, even though there are those encouraging success stories out there? Oh, for sure! But funny enough, a handful of the people initially challenging the opening of our clinic have come back to me and apologized. They’ve seen the good we’re doing and have friends and family who are now benefiting from medical marijuana. It’s been encouraging. But we’ve definitely received some negative responses. Those who have expressed concern that “now pot will be in New Smyrna!” have shown that they are oftentimes not aware of the benefits of medical marijuana (nor its general prevalence and history in society at large), so I’m happy to speak with them and try to inform them of the verified benefits of such medication. One woman came in early on only to express genuine concern that anyone wanting a medical marijuana card is “only wanting to get high.” I explained that what we do is actually medical and we are educating and guiding our patients not toward just getting high but genuinely improving their lives, and then I asked “but what if someone does want to get high? What concerns you about
Who have been T.H.C.’s greatest advocates? We have had plenty of supporters, but it is worth noting that our greatest advocates really are the patients who are telling their own stories. Word of mouth has been great for our clinic! Many of our patients have been very open with others about how their quality of life has improved, and it’s all creating a helpful conversation in which people are being educated about medical marijuana. It’s also worth saying, NSB has definitely been supportive, and I’m thankful for that.
Last question. Do most patients find difficult the process to obtain a medical marijuana card? Any advice to those interested in applying? The process is actually pretty simple and straightforward. Our patients haven’t expressed any real difficulty with attaining a card. Interested patients diagnosed with a qualifying condition— conditions listed on our website—come in to the clinic and present to us their diagnosis, I speak with the interested patient at length about whether or not medical marijuana could be a likely benefit, and if so, the patient sends his or her application to the state, and upon approval and receiving a card the patient is then able to acquire medical marijuana from local dispensaries and visit with me as we monitor their use and experience.
So would you agree that education, direct and/ or vicarious, has been the key to turning the tide from many holding to negative stigmas about medical marijuana to accepting it as a real and at times best option for treatment of certain illnesses and diseases? Oh, absolutely! Education has been key. Patients sharing stories, articles on CNN and in newspapers and magazines, they have all helped many people realize that there really is something very good to be gained from responsible medical marijuana use. I welcome anyone to come in and speak with me so they may be better educated about medical marijuana. Come on in and I’ll

MAY/JUNE FISHING OUTLOOK

Inshore Adventures with Skye
FISHING REPORT WITH SKYE BURKHARDT The white butterflies are starting to show up everywhere, a little later than usual this year but it's a good sign and the Dolphin are here. Summertime is perfect time of the year to target Dolphin. Fishing for them is different than fishing king mackerel or bottom fishing, it's based on what you can see and fish on top, such as weedlines. Of course structure on the bottom is most important as it holds food and bait. When fishing for dolphin you are looking for surface structure, temperature and brakes these are key factors in having a successful fishing trip. You want to be in the warmer waters, ideal temperatures for Mahi is 78 to 79 degrees. Running up and down the beaches you will start to see Manta Rays, which is where you will find Cobia trailng and looking for food in the stirred up sand, casting a jig behind the manta ray working it to the side will result in a bite! Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Trout, Sharks, Snapper, Pompano and Blue fish are all here. Speaking of sharks one of my recent trips out scouting for Manta Rays with my buddies Shane Ryan and the Back to Blue crew, I hooked into a Blue fish which was chased by shark, well in the end the shark of course won leaving me with a shark on the end of my line. I must say it was pretty awesome to witness! This is one of my favorite times of the year to fish because Tarpon are back aka the silver king! You should start seeing them at your local bridges, corners, cuts, causeway's, canals and in the river. When fishing for Tarpon I always beef my rig up 50lb braid tied to 80lb liter using my go to knot, the FG knot with a 6/o circle hook tying liter to braid, simply free-lining a jumbo shrimp or quarter size blue crab is like candy to these silver beauties. You can find Snook at your local Bridges and docks, anywhere there is structure real or artifical you are certain to have schools of Snook hanging out. I target Snook free-lining shrimp or on my favorite, a paddle tail DOA pearl mullet on a weedless

hook, or a Badonk-A-donk nothing like watching a Snook smash a top water that is sure to leave you fulfilled! Mosquito Lagoon has it's locals and I am always out there landing those beautiful Reds and releasing them back to their habiat, but being the poor condition or lagoon is in right now as far as seagrass and many other issues from runoffs & etc. I continue to do my part in practicing catch and release as well as clean ups to help save our Lagoon, every little bit helps! Remember when fishing inshore the moon phases play a large role in the bite, I find fishing a few days before and a few days after (not the day of) the moon phase to be most productive. Depending on where you fish and what you are fishing for, learning that spot, what baits to use (live or artifical) as well as fishing the tide changes you will find your trips to be much more successful. 37
TALK
STORY
TALK STORY:
WALTER SNELL PHOTOGRAPHED BY: PATRICK RUDDY
What motto do you live by if any? Never stop having fun! How long have you been surfing for? I was born in Daytona and started surfing when I was probably 12. What was it like in the 70's-80's being a surfer in our area? It was very competitive among our group at Hartford approach and we had a surf team at Seabreeze Jr. High and then Seabreeze High School. We all surfed ESA. Local Hartford Heavies were Ben Duffett, Jeff Clement, John and Jack Wade, Bob Snyder, Glen Cook, Clyde Rodgers, the Talley’s and Shays. Who were the top guys at the inlet back in those days? Ponce was not as competitive then but locals there were Steve Reeves, Craig (OR does he mean RICK ?)Thresher, and Mad Dog. New Smyrna was where the action was and with waves so consistent. That’s really where I improved my surfing the most. You had to stay out of the way of guys like Terry Presley, Ross Pell, Chip Clark, Randy Richenburg, Jim Lane, Clay Lyles, Tony Hume but also learn from their shredding. If you can go back 30-40 years what advice would you give yourself? I feel like I have been blessed and have few regrets. In those days everyone was or wanted to be a pro surfer, including me. My parents said college and I began looking into schools in California and Hawaii, but they registered and enrolled me at UF. So, off I went and it really was the best route for me. After going to the ESA Championship twice in high school and not placing high, I realized there was no career there as that was a true entry to recognition and a better pro career. What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the Daytona Beach area? Back then everyone I knew lived beachside and the beach was so accessible and less restricted. Even though I am the type to just hang, I need to be surfing or something. As I got older and had children, I realized the stress of parents with cars and kids on the beach, so I believe traffic free zones are worthy and will ultimately improve our community. What type of boards are you riding and what are the dimensions? I am currently riding a 6’4” Orion squash tail with a quad setup. The width is 20.5 and thickness is 2.65. My favorite longboard is my older 9’6” Peter Pan Slug.
You’re more of a shortboard type of guy. Can you ever see yourself converting to a longboard? Not a full long board convert or SUPer anytime soon, but I enjoy both in the right conditions. I think variety is important. Where was your last surf trip and did you score waves? I just returned from two weeks in Hawaii and scored as described above. Prior to that, scored great waves at Las Flores, El Salvador. I did travel to St. Petersburg, Russia last November to give my wife a non-surf related, cultural experience, and it was. You are involved with The Halifax Historical Society Museum. Can you tell us more about the Museum and what the main goal is? I took over my dad’s role as board member of museum about 10 years ago and began to really appreciate all that it offers in achieving its goal of preserving our local history. It’s a great place for locals to research high school yearbooks, funeral records and amazing old photos, as well as great exhibits. A must see for anyone who calls themselves a local! And now we will be in our 8th year of the Surf Social, which has been the largest fundraiser each year. It is also about the nostalgia
of attending a surf flick as a teenager. What is our youth lacking? Youth today seem to lack independence, motivation, and plane good manners. What is the best traveling experience in your life? That’s a tough one but probably Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock in Costa Rica, both on the same day. Also, watching Pipe Masters for the first time in 2015 is a highlight of surf experiences in my life. Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs or thank you’s? Thanks for opportunity to do this and I am honored as I feel there are so many more worthy legends. Aloha.
