elcome to our inaugural Vacation issue. Grab your umbrella drink, kick your feet up, and get ready for some fun in the sun. Vacation is defined as a period of time devoted to pleasure, rest, or relaxation, especially one with pay granted to an employee. Besides the fact that a job put a roof over my families head, one of the main reasons that I work is for vacation time. Over the years traveling during my “two weeks” off of work is what keeps my wheels turning. It has opened my eyes to different cultures, traditions, and types of people. My parents were globe trotters and I’m pretty sure they gave me the bug. I will never forget my first real vacation. My Aunt Tammy and Uncle
Zach were these cool family members that I always looked up to and I tend to be on my best behavior around. To reward me for my 15th birthday, they surprised me after school one day telling me that they chartered a plane, and we were going to the Bahamas for a week. It was every kids dream vacation. Girls on the beach, blue water, surfing, fishing, crashing golf carts, and my first time getting my buzz on (and I snuck it which made it that much better). Vacation time means something different for all of us. For some it is just time to decompress and get as far away from work as possible. For others, it’s a journey and time to discover things. Whatever it is to you, savor it and enjoy
it with the ones you love. For me, that first vacation to the Bahamas was a light beaming down on me. It opened my eyes and I realized that vacationing is what life is all about. Getting to a beach and looking at the horizon that has endless character makes your worries melt away. The best advice that we can give you at Fluid is be responsible, put money away and travel at least twice a year. If being responsible isn’t your thing, get a credit card, grab a plane ticket, and worry about it later! Aloha, Pura Vida, and Safe Travels my friends.

YOGA POSES WITH ROXY SULLIVANN
Funky Chair Twist Great for gluteal muscles, balance, and digestion. Start standing with the feet together. Sit the butt back like you’re sitting into an imaginary chair with the hands at heart center. Twist to the right by bringing the left elbow to the right thigh. Once you’re there, really get deep into the twist by pressing your hands together to get them to heart center. Once you’ve found stillness, lift the left heel into the left butt cheek and hold for five breaths. Repeat on the other side!
Rabbit Variation Releases tension in the neck, shoulders, and back. Also known to help with insomnia. Start by sitting on the heels with the knees together. Then, round down and allow the forehead to press against the knees. Take the hands around to the low back and interlace the fingers. Keeping the palms together, start to lift the hips up towards the sky while the palms start to come up and over the back and eventually the head. Hold for five breaths.
Core Not only does a strong core look and feel nice, it also contributes to your flexibility, balance, and posture. Having a strong core is key with staying mobile in the later stages of life. Start with the knees hip distance apart in an upright position. Reach the hands forward at shoulder height with the palms facing down. Keep the back flat and the shoulders in line with the hips as you begin to hinge back at the knees. Draw the navel to the spine and breathe!
Headstand Headstands are known to improve circulation, digestion, and varicose veins. The posture also helps strengthen the spine, shoulders, and core. Start on all fours a few inches away from a wall. Drop down to the forearms and interlace the fingers while keeping the elbows shoulder width apart. Opening the palms up slightly, place the crown of the head on the floor with the back of the head in the hands. Come onto the toes and walk the feet as close as you can to the face. Once the hips stack over the shoulders, slowly lift one leg up at a time.
Meditation Meditating for even just a few minutes a day can make a huge difference in your well-being. Studies show that meditation decreases stress and negative emotions, while increasing self-awareness or mindfulness. Start in a comfortable seated position, with the back straight and the shoulders relaxed. Let the palms be down by the knees and facing upwards. Close the eyes and start to focus on just your breath. Slowly start to relax all of the muscles in the face. Instead of focusing so hard on clearing the mind, let the mind relax. Let the thoughts come in, acknowledge them, and then let them go with an exhale. Without dwelling, and without judgement. roxysullivann@gmail.com

WORK HARD, PLAY HARDER. A phrase and/or motto for some that I've heard many times in my life. Perhaps to often justify a ‘reason’ to take a load off and actually take a few moments to step away from the hustle and bustle and repetitive motions of everyday life. I was taught from a young age, and learned from example from both my parents, that hard work pays off. After working 3 jobs - 7 days a week where the days, weeks and months seemed well...seamless, It was time to take that second half of the expression seriously, reason or not. It started with my girlfriend taking a midday scroll on Groupon via mobile just to see what deals she could stumble upon when one popped up that wasn’t your ordinary knickknack. An inticing, beautifully colorcorrected image of a shaded beach cabana overlooking an electric blue Caribbean ocean glows from the screen. ‘All-inclusive 7 days, 6 nights in the Dominican Republic’ it reads. We hadn’t the slightest notion of a pre-meditated vacation anywhere on the radar, but the idea of ‘anyplace but here’ is omnipresent. Three hours later, with very little thought and consideration, we pulled the trigger. Destination D.R., aquí llegamos! We departed from MIA on St. Patrick's Day. I had never been to an all-inclusive style resort before, and neither had she, so we were highly anticipating our luxury style vacation to live like royalty for a week. We flew into Puerta Plata about mid-day where we were immediately
28
greeted with an authentic island-style street band thumping on their hand made instruments and an agressively eager crowd of airport worker bees who are overly anxious to free up your hands for a small donation. The smell of airport empanadas, a hint of natively sweet dark rum, and the taste of lukewarm Presidente consumes my senses. At last, vacation is here...reality who? An all-day, all-you-can-eat buffet that offers world-wide cuisine, 3 specialty restaurants, 2 pools with swim up bars, an immaculate stretch of gold-sand beach littered with cabanas, a bottomless minibar, live entertainment, ping-pong, billiards, tennis, snorkeling, kayaks, windsurfing and sailing were just a few of the amenities at our disposal. Oh, and did I mention, everything is already included at no additional expense! A gorgeous oceanside golf course was located meters from the resort but unfortunately was not included in the package. However, I was not going to leave without stroking a few irons in the Caribbean. In all honesty, that may have been the most memorable experience of the trip. On the retrospect of all the included amenities that cost us nothing, the day of golf for her and I totaled a crisp two and a half Benjamins. Don’t get me wrong, I was willing to pay for the experience regardless, but this is how it went down: 18 holes for 2 players, 2 sets of (assorted) rental clubs, 1 cart fee, a mandatory caddie fee, a dozen recycled golf balls, 1 bag-o-tees, cooler special #1
featuring 6 Presidentes, a water bottle and Gatorade, 1 small bucket of range balls, and a $20 post-round tip for our caddie Chino! The experience was priceless, none the less just one of the amenities that is safe to say was far from ‘all-inclusive'. In addition, we found a hot little discoteca only a walk up the street from the resort that attracted a young, adventurous local and tourist crowd that came alive at night and stayed active 'til the sun began to rise. One round of 4 shots cost me about $350 pesos, which is equivalent to about ten bucks, however, in my drunken stupor I tried to argue because I felt like I was getting ripped off. When driving into town outside of the security of the segregated resort property you see things like a family of 5 all piled up on one measly motorbike charging down broken roads at 50 mph carrying baskets of produce on their heads, kids beggin' for your hat, a candy bar or anything you are willing to give them and it really makes you revert back to reality for just a moment and realize how good we have it. We bitch and moan about working year around for the man and only dream about when we can come back to paradise, when some folks will never see a vacation in their lifetime; other than the ones the guests they're serving are enjoying! And for those people in the hospitality business who play hard, but work harder...we thank you! Oh, and one last thing, don't lose or misplace your towel card. Words by: Lance Drake

10 TIPS ON HOW TO Y THE RIGHT WAY. VACATE
WORDS BY: PATRICK RUDDY PHOTOS BY: JIMMY WILSON, GUNNER HUGHES, CHRIS BURKARD & PATRICK RUDDY When was the last time you took a Vacation? And I’m not talking about the trip to Stuart to see the in-laws. I’m talking about foreign coast lines & mid-day mai tai’s. This article isn’t about making good choices, it’s about breaking out of our daily mold and stepping into the world unknown. You see, here at Fluid Magazine we constantly strive for that next opportunity we get to travel. We drive old trucks, rent small office spaces & drink cheap coffee year a round, all to have just enough money in the account to pull the trigger on those last minute trips to paradise.
The following pages contain a few tips we’ve learned along the way that we think will hopefully lead you to having that experience of a life-time. But if these tips aren’t of interest to you, if you’d rather surf the local beach break, fish the neighbors lake and continue working toward that car payment, then by all means do just that. We'll be packing our board bags & stamping our passports!

Congratulations!
Now just take our advise and prepare yourself for anything...Enjoy!

1/ Who needs commitment? We live with commitment everyday. Yes, so maybe you pay a few extra bucks for your beach-box, but you also end up in the area you ultimately wanna enjoy! Nothing is worse then showing up to your discount room on Orbitz and realizing it’s nothing like you’ve expected.
2/ Whatever it might be, try indulging in the local spirits. Today we’re drinking red wine, your answer - AWESOME! Whether you have one glass or three bottles, you’re showing the people around you that you are here to take in the whole experience!
3/ Vacation shouldn’t always be planned out, sometimes it should be spontaneous & exciting. What better way to start an adventure than making a mid-night strike mission?
30
4/ What better opportunity will you ever have to do, say, think, & later tell whatever you want? If nobody knows, no one can care!
5/ Or don’t? Either way it’s a rental. Feel free to eat, drink, pull the e-brake, do donuts and anything else you want too, but just remember, it’s a rental. Treat it like one!
6/ You don’t need to tell people where you went & what you did! Nothing says vacation like sexy tan lines & radiant smiles.
7/ Okay, maybe you don’t actually line-dance, but your on foreign turf, take the initiative to break out of your comfort zone and run out on the dance floor like you almost know what you’re doing! You might be surprised with your new found skills.
8/ Remember, like 2 years ago when we weren’t glued to our phones like shallow high-school girls waiting for their meathead boy friends to text them back. Yeah, I said it! Leave the social media where it belongs, too boring times when you wanna be somewhere else.
9/ Time to say screw happy hour! You no longer have a time schedule. If a round of beers is out of your budget, then you should have gone to a third world country, or got another credit card, either way it’s time to indulge!
10/ These streets may appear similar as you pass through them at 50 mph, but as you walk you realize everything around you has suddenly transformed, your eyes are open to this new world, and you like it!

RICHIE BROWN’S COCO CRUSH LOCATION: INLET HARBOR, PONCE INLET FL: Tell us where you got the idea? RB: I’ve always been a big fan of Captain & coke, so when Inlet Harbor asked me to create some tropical drinks for the new menu, I started experimenting with Malibu, Captain & pineapple. Then one Sunday to amuse the local boat crowd, I decided to add white rum, pina colada mix & a Myers floater to the ingredients. And, well, the rest is history! The drink's now a local favorite! FL: How would you describe this refreshing cocktail? RB: (Laughs) - some describe it as “Strong & Sweet!”

I know you’ve got to be getting tired of eating at the same old restaurants and ordering the same old things. That gets boring after a while, so I’m here to open your eyes, ears and especially your mouth to Black Bean Cafe, located in Daytona Beach Shores at 3218 South A1A.
Black Bean Cafe may be the new kid in town but they have all the right stuff to instantly make a name for themselves. BOBBY LEVY 15 YRS OLD Hometown? New Smyrna Beach, FL Sponsors? Red Dog Surf Shop & Rhythm Clothing What inspires you? People that make a good impact on others’ lives and that put others first to make the world a better place. My parents inspire me the most out of anyone, though. Where have you traveled to? I have traveled around the United States and Central America quite a bit since a young age, but recently I have visited Hawaii and Ireland. Those places have really stood out to me and were great experiences both with respect to culture and surfing. Your dream trip takes you where and with whom? My dream trip would be a boat trip in the Maldives with two of my best friends and my family. The waves there look dreamy, and it just seems like a tropical paradise that would be epic to visit. Who is your dream girl? Haven’t really thought about that yet. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I really want to go to a college in Southern California and be able to surf as much as I can at the point & beach breaks all around that area. Who is your shaper? Greg Geiselman of Orion Surfboards. He’s one of the best shapers on the east coast in my opinion and is just an all around great person to be around. Every time we see you are so stoked! How do you stay so positive? I just really love surfing and appreciate the life that I am able to live. I try to enjoy my life to the fullest and focus on the positive things in life, and that keeps me stoked all the time. Favorite non-surf movie? Captain Phillips Have you ever been star-struck? Not really, but I was stoked when I met the Gudauskas brothers at Lower Trestles. I got to surf with them and see how stoked they were as adults. Best place in town for breakfast?

SpongeBob Where do you go to school? New Smyrna Beach High School Who’s your college team? I was never really interested in college football. Who’s gonna win the 2014 World Tour title? I would like to see Taj Burrow win it, but in reality I think it’s between Kelly and Parko. If you owned a restaurant, what would you make? Sushi. Golf or tennis? They are both fun, but I’d have to go with golf. Thanks to? My family for supporting me in everything that I do, and my friends for always making me laugh. Also thank you Marty Ficalora and Tupat for always shooting photos down at the inlet, and Bryan Forand for including me in the Fluid Mag.

The start of summer is the best time of year for fishing offshore on the central Florida coast. Kicking it off with grouper season starting May 1st, expect your poles to be bent with Gags, Black Bellies, and Scamps until the end of season, December 31st. When rigged up for bottom fishing, hit your numbers in 70-220 feet of water. When aiming to tighten your lines with grouper, use pin fish with about 12 feet of 100 pound fluorocarbon leader, a 9/0 circle hook with about a 12-16 ounce lead, depending on the current. That will get you in the right direction to fill your fish box up with some fatties when hitting the right numbers. Have rods rigged up for Vermilion Snapper, Trigger Fish, and Sea Bass as well. I recommend to use the same setup as Grouper, but instead of a single hook and Pin fish, use a double rig and squid for bait to get the bite on.
05/30 | 5th Friday Food Trucks | Canal Street | New Smyrna Beach
During these hot months your lines are also being burned off the spool by pelagic species such as Mahi and Wahoo. When trolling for Mahi, you’ll have the best luck with pink, white, blue, and white islanders. Mold craft chugger heads with a small or medium ballyhoo behind the lure will also get your lines tightened with a big bull. Using 80 pound fluorocarbon the old normal sea witches work great for skirting your ballyhoo. Keep an eye out for big weed lines and water color changes about 30-50 miles out of Ponce Inlet, any where from a depth of 100 to 1200 feet deep. If you’re fishing for Wahoo, try using the black Wahoo whacker or the black and blue islander with a bullet head with a big horse ballyhoo behind the lure. Make sure to have it rigged with #8-10 wire. I have been mainly fishing the area called the steeples and the role down. Always keep a look out for water temperature breaks, current rips and flying fish. If you encounter any of these you should be in the meat. Florida is the mecca for fishing and if you’re ready to get tight lines and big fish, call me for a charter. Mention this report and receive a 10% discount on any charter.
