NOTE FROM EDITOR Let’s face it, music is a huge part of our lives. It doesn’t control every aspect of our existence, but it does tend to influence us in so many ways. Music can be used for things as little as passing time, or it can be as important as connecting us to our roots. As we sat down with the talented musicians that fill the airwaves in Central Florida, we realized that almost all of them are 110% engulfed in their trade. In most cases, it was a talent that has been passed down from one generation to the next. Each year we dedicate an issue entirely to music, and it’s always a learning experience. This time around, I realized how much a music career can be a rollercoaster. For all the successful artist out there, you have to account for the millions that don't succeed. It is peaks and valleys when you are in this industry, and all the help you can get is a bonus. Every single musician we interviewed was beyond grateful and emphasized how important it was to be featured in Fluid Magazine. Hearing things like that is what inspires us at Fluid Magazine to keep progressing and continue to help out the community in any way possible. With that being said, enjoy what we are offered here in Central Florida, and support your local music scene!

The local music scene is far more intimate and pure than music that has been tainted with fame. The musicians that perform nightly in Central Florida are raw, and they are true to themselves and their fans. They don't have a label dictating all their actions. What you see is the truth, and the best part of that, is getting to experience their unique style. Bottom line is, Support Your Local Music Scene!!!

MUSIC ISSUE

Someday River psychedelic indie folk for extraterrestrials. come for the folk. stay for the funk. Hey guys, what were you doing just before you started this interview?: I was just hanging a few pieces in the Art Gallery I work at! Measure twice, hang once, y’all.. Don’t forget it!

more comfortable putting out these songs as Someday River. How many Taylor Swift songs do you actually listen to every single day? Gosh, I’d have to say I hear at least one in passing somehow, haha. Catchy little things, aren’t they? To be honest, I don’t listen to T-Swift often, although I probably should.

What type of music do you make? We make Rock and Roll. More specifically? I think I might lean towards Funk Indie Folk Rock… Maybe with twinges of Psychedelia and Experimentality. It’s fun to let loose and try new things without having too many parameters for how we want or need to sound.

Ok, enough funny business, where can we hear you play next? On July 16th we are performing with Good Graeff for their EP release Party at Will’s Pub in Orlando! It’s going to be a great time. We will be debuting the new name and performing some new songs. Good Graeff is an amazing act out of Los Angeles, and a group called COEDS from Savannah, Georgia will be joining us as well.

We know you've recently made a name change, why? Well, since the band started in 2011 we have really evolved and come into a new sound that seems more developed than where we were at first. We’ve had members come and go and things have just changed. Most importantly, I’d say the new name better represents what we are doing now and who we are as a band going forward. We have a bunch of new music getting ready for release so I thought that this was the right time to make the change. Overall, I’m

Tell us about the central Florida music scene. What do you like and/or dis-like? From what I’ve seen in the past 5-6 years the music scene has really been flourishing. (Maybe due to my prior ignorance?) There are so many great bands doing unique things and collaborating with each other. I’ve noticed a lot of positivity recently in St. Pete, Tampa, and Orlando. The musicians seem to be supporting each other and banding together rather than competing, which is crucial to grow the scene in my opinion. It is definitely

a tight knit community, but I’m still stumbling on local bands all the time who are fantastic and making great music. There has been quite a bit of “cross-genre camaraderie” (did I just make a new term?) with rock, pop, punk, and jam bands in the area. It has been fulfilling to watch and be a part of, really. If you could play a set with anyone who would it be, and why? That’s a pretty big question. Play with as a band member, or play the same day as? Either way, I would probably need weeks to properly answer that, over some hard deliberating, so I think the best thing I could say right now would be some larger scale Festival. I would love to play Hangout Festival or Shaky Knees. There are so many awesome bands on a bill like that, and so many unique experiences within the event as a whole. There could be any number of groups that I truly admire, all in a weekend. I think the type of audience at shows like that would be prime candidates to hear Someday River, if ever we had the opportunity. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, any last shout-outs? Anytime, it’s been fun! Shout out to Chris Hess and Adam Winn for pointing me in the right direction, Michael Serrin, Zack Hoag, and to all of our Friends and Family for their undying support. We love you all. Oh and my cat, Spud! 27

band

Jonnie Morgan Where do you live? I'm from Clearwater, FL but live in Orlando where the band originated in 2010. How did Jonnie Morgan Band get its’ start and get to where it is today? Right around 2009, Junior year of college I started casually writing music/ songs for fun. I started getting really good feedback from friends and family that I had something special being able to write songs. To me it came natural so I didn't really think too much into it. About a year later after gaining enough courage to go out to an open mic night, I was approached by our now bassist, Jeremy Adams, looking to see if I wanted to collaborate together. Fast forward 6 years, an enormous amount of hard work, a few line-up changes and voila, Jonnie Morgan Band.

HORN INFUSED MODERN ROCK BAND

How long have you been singing and playing instruments? I started playing guitar at around 13 and would pick it up on and off throughout high school/college. I always joked with my mom that I would one day be a professional singer. I say joke because I know how competitive it is out there. I like to think I have a unique voice that separates me from the crowd. Maybe not the strongest, most powerful but different. I like that. How did you decide that you wanted to play music full time? After college I started working for UPS. About three months in, I called and quit. I knew right then and there that I needed to start chasing my dreams immediately and didn't want to wait another minute. That was August, 2010. I haven't looked back since. Who's your favorite local band (besides your own of course)? There's way too many favorites to choose just one. Some top one's that come to mind are Empire Theory, Groove Orient, Evan Taylor Jones Band, Kaleigh Baker and so many others!!

photos by: ADAM FRICKE

Where will JMB be 5 years from now? Five years from now I would like to have put out at least two more full length albums, and pretty well known around the U.S. through extensive touring/marketing/interviews with Fluid magazine ;) If you could tour with any band of your choosing, who would it be with? I would absolutely love to go on tour with O.A.R.! I've watched them grow since high school and they are not mainstream, yet most people have heard of them. It's been a dream for a while. Favorite venue to play? House of Blues, every time. Let's hear a funny story from the road! Funniest story...ohh man. It wasn't funny when it happened but trying to leave an enclosed loading dock at 2 a.m. from a show in North Carolina, legally having to be out by 6 a.m. and our starter blew on the bus. It was just one of those things a band has to go through while touring and makes for such a good story now. About $800 later, we left at 5:40 a.m. If you had to describe your music in less than five words... Horn Infused Modern Rock Band What do you think your greatest opportunity has been thus far in your music career? Our greatest opportunity is a constant thing. It's when we get to meet new fans who are thrilled about our music. It makes the daily grind so much more worth it and keeps us going. I'm not sure fans know how much it means to musicians or us, but it's so cool to meet new people. Anything you'd like to add? The stage is yours. Only thing I would add is thank you so much Fluid magazine for having us be a part of this issue. It's truly an honor!

Where do you live? Orlando Originally from? Miami Occupation? Singer, Songwriter, Performer How long have you been singing and playing instruments? I started out playing classical piano when I was 8 and performed in recitals until I was 12. Then, I switched to guitar when I was 13. I was involved in theatre in high school and I started singing. I began writing and singing my own songs in college at UCF. Is your family musical? Yes, my sister studied piano. My mother loves opera and classical. We all love to dance, haha! Genre of music you perform? Pop/Rock I'm releasing a new project this summer which is Tropical/ Pop. It's a new sound for me. It's got a throwback beach sound with some Caribbean flavor. What are most of your songs about? My personal life. I like to

Crazy Carls write about experiences that are real. I think about my fans when I write. I want my fans to get to know me through my songs. What do you enjoy the most about the CFL music scene? I love the fans who are loyal to local music. Which venues do you perform at most frequently? We play a lot of beach bars along the east coast of Florida. In Orlando, we love playing House of Blues. What is the biggest hurdle for a musician? The biggest hurdle is learning how to promote yourself, so you can get recognized from all of the competition. It's tough to get heard these days. If you had to describe your music in less than five words.. Fun, positive,

energy, original, funky Do you have groupies and/or stalkers? Who doesn't...Haha If you weren't a musician what would you be doing? I would be doing something outdoors or athletic. I love traveling as well! Tell us something that most of your fans wouldn’t know about you? I was born in Hong Kong and lived in several countries growing up. My father was an international banker which took our family to places all over the world. What do you think your greatest opportunity has been thus far in your music career? Touring nationally was a great experience, I learned a lot. Also, almost selling out House Of Blues as a headliner was great. What has been your magic recipe for success? I'm still working on it. Success for me means national well known recognition from people who really enjoy my music. Any last words? I really appreciate the feature and I hope your readers will check out my music. I've got an exciting new project being released very shortly!

FLUID PROFILE f/2.8L. Depending on the venue, I might throw in a 50mm or 14mm wide angle. The pit can be a crowded and hostile place. Do you indulge or see many photographers going for it? - Yeah it can get pretty hectic in the photo pit, especially for bigger shows or festivals. Everyone is clambering around trying to get their shots. I've found that being respectful of other photographers as they try to get their shots is usually the best way to go, because they will more than likely return the favor. What else do you point your camera at besides bands? - I've been surfing since I was a kid so naturally I'm drawn to photograph surfing. I also enjoy landscapes and am becoming more interested in portraiture as well.

Everyone always says that you have to start somewhere. About three years ago we started receiving emails from a UCF student interested in becoming an intern. Although he said that he was willing to do anything to get his foot in the door, we knew from the start he was all about creating images. Fricke has been a huge part of the Fluid Magazine team from holding reflectors to editing footage from photo shoots. He has grown quickly to become who he is today and we are honored to have had Adam Fricke as an intern. You've grown fast, young grasshopper. In a very short time frame, you have built a very impressive portfolio of live shows and portraits. What has gotten you to there so fast? - I think for me, it has a lot to do with motivation. The first show I shot was a favor for my friend's band. I was immediately hooked and began cold-calling touring bands, asking them for photo passes as they came through town. Each "yes" added photos to my portfolio and each "no" added fuel to the flame. I don't have to do that as much anymore but it surely motivated me to keep pushing forward. When shooting a live show, what is in the kit bag? - Currently, my go-to gear includes my Canon 5dmkiii, 24-70mm f/2.8L, and 70-200mm

Who is the next big thing in the music scene to come out of Central Florida? - There really is a ton of talent around here, so it's hard to say. Although, my absolute favorite band to work with is Jonnie Morgan Band. They have a really unique sound and great stage presence. And they're even cooler dudes off stage than on, which is hard to come by.

Best show you've had the opportunity to shoot? - Each show is so different it's tough to pick just one. But one that really stands out for me was Foster The People. It was at the Hard Rock and the lighting across that huge stage was insane. They sounded perfect and had an incredible connection with the audience. This was also one of the first shows I got into by cold-calling and asking for photo credentials which made it that much more special. Do you have any pointers for those looking to become a photographer, or more specifically, a music photographer? - Invest in yourself and if you're going to go for it, really go for it. Everybody starts somewhere, just work hard and keep moving forward. It sounds a little clichĂŠ but it holds true. Adam, Thank you very much for your time and all you contributions to Fluid Mag. Any last words? - Thank you to my family, friends, and mentors for all the support, encouragement, and guidance. And a huge thank you to Fluid for having me be a part of the team. Cheers!

Favorite venues in CFL to shoot? Top 3 (in no particular order) would have to be The Beacham for nice lighting and sound, The Social for the intimacy of the venue and the amazing staff, and Hard Rock for the giant stage and roomy photo pit. Which photographers do you admire the most? My favorite music photographers at the moment are Adam Elmakias, Danny Clinch, and Todd Owyoung. As for surfing, I really look up to Chris Burkard and Morgan Maassen. Oh, and that Patrick Ruddy guy is pretty good too....

SURF & FISH APP Tell us about Local Buoy and how it got started? We got started by a simple idea of providing data that is better organized.

What would you say is the most powerful feature for surfing? Best feature for surfing is that we have attached the marine forecast to each buoy. You can not only view what the current conditions are but what the ocean conditions are forecasted to be for the next five days. What would you say is the most powerful feature for fishing? Best fishing feature is the tide table along with moon phase and weather. All in one spot helps you plan for a good bite and when fish might be chewing. We know you just launched a new version, what's different? Version 2 along with the Android is going to be released late summer. (Currently Version 1 is on itunes) Where do you collect your data from? All of the data is collected from NOAA Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, anything else we should know about the app? The "Local Spot" feature gives the user the ability to preset and organize data for locations they regularly fish or surf. It essentially puts all data in one place so the user can make a decision and go. Helps a lot when trying to plan with weather, swell, and wind. Whether you are at the dock, launching a boat, running over a dune with a board, or checking a new beach break, it gives simple data so you can make the call.

Inshore As summer comes into full swing with the sun hammering down heat rays into Mosquito Lagoon and its adjacent creeks and canals, the tactics of hunting down fish will inevitably alter. The morning and afternoon times will produce the most bites. If you’re looking for some spotted sea trout game, try searching out deeper water in the 3-5 foot range. They tend to seek comfort in waters that maintain lower temperatures. Try casting out some top water plugs to entice Snook and Trout. You can find some Snook posted up in the back creeks of our fisheries. Redfish have already begun to break apart from the typical springtime schooling patterns to roam alone. This is one of the best times to witness tailing fish. Keep an eye out for slow moving redfish feeding off the bottom. If you manage to go out on a calm glassy day, there is almost a full guarantee you will find them if you look for them. Juvenile Tarpon can be found gulping air off the surface of the stagnant backwater pools that surround the lagoon. This is a survival technique that allows tarpon to remain in water conditions that repel most other species of fish. Try flipping some small 1/8 oz to 1/16 oz jig heads with a baitfish imitation, you will probably end up jumping a few if you’ve found them. Pay attention to where you are at all times, taking note of what is around you. If you see crabs, shrimp, or baitfish, this will probably be a great place to fish. Where there is bait, there will most likely be larger fish feeding upon them. Try to match up your bait to that of what you see in the habitat around you. Flounder and black drum have been showing up around areas that provide a dense population of crabs and shrimp. This summer can provide you with numerous tight lines if you get out there and cast a line in the water. For fly fishermen, this time of year is a great opportunity to get your first Sheepshead on fly if you haven’t already! For any anglers that have no means of transportation on the water, all you have to do is explore on foot. Sink to your knees in mud looking for fisheries that prove to hold fish. Just watch out for predators like alligators!

offshore The waters are still relatively warm as summer is in full swing. You can expect the bite to continue to be active. Look for the shrimp boats and chase for some awesome action. You never know what kind of monsters you might hook up with in this scenario. Don’t be surprised to put up a fight with tarpon, spinners, or black-tip sharks. You can still expect to get into sport fish as warm water is still around. Look for schools of mahi around weed beds or any other floating structures. If you’re lucky, you might still hook up with wahoo, sail, or the elusive marlin!
