FROM THE EDITOR Summer is here and we are in the thick of it! The heat is unbearable, and, in my opinion, so are the masses. Our little beach towns keep getting more crowded and congested! It is hard not to become a little jaded on all the changes; new construction, annoying stoplights, and constant traffic that fills each crevice of our coastal towns in Central Florida. At times it feels like we are a magnet and all the forces are blasting in our direction. The walls are caving in on our little slice of heaven, and it becomes harder to spread our wings and have room to flow. It is easy to become complacent and bellow in the current situation, but that isn’t part of our plan. Although we are experiencing an overwhelming amount of growth, we at Fluid always continue to find ways to stay enthusiastic on what surroundings we have on tap. You have to remember, we live where people vacation. We have rivers, lakes, beaches everywhere we look, and best of all, we live in our boardshorts and bikinis (when we aren't grinding the nine to fiver). That alone should keep the positive vibes flowing and peace signs plentiful. Having the opportunity to see the world will open your eyes. Third world countries will put things in perspective pretty damn quick! Here in the States our worries consist of a thunderstorm taking out the Wi-Fi connection for 30 minutes. When in places such as Central and South America, and all over the world, there are families in a shack that are worried about providing food and shelter to their loved ones. One little hit on tourism in their pueblo, (that is "town" for all you that don't speak a lick of espaùol), can cause for people to starve and all out chaos to break out. So next time you are pissed off in traffic because Barney Rubble from out of town cuts you off, just remember, we have it pretty damn good. This time of year the days are long and the nights are even longer, so get out and enjoy the summer! BRYAN FORAND - Founder / Editor

ALEXA SCORE 26 YRS | PATRICK RUDDY

Where do you live? I spend most of my time on the road, but home base is Orlando, FL. Originally from? Spicer, MN Occupation? Wakeboarder, Author, TV personality Where would your dream trip take you? My dream trip is less about the destination and more about who I’m with. I could have fun ANYWHERE with a rad crew! Best thing about being a pro wakeboarder? Who doesn’t like spending their days on a boat?! How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Too many. Damn you, Pinterest! What is the worst wipeout you've ever taken? The first time I tried to ollie onto a rail…. The Real Housewives or Sunday Night Football? SNF hands down. Skol Vikings! Favorite spot to wakeboard? At the base of the Mt. Isarog volcano at CWC, Camsur, Philippines Got a boyfriend? Accepting applications. Worst Pickup Line? That’s a tough one. Sometimes any pickup line is better than none…I’ll take what I can get, haha. Most important thing on a first date? PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN. Turn on’s? A touch of grey, humility, hockey hair. Turn off’s? Lack of hobbies, complaining, hair gel. Best Beach in Florida? Anywhere there are waves, beer, and an awesomely bad cover band! Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artists? I have a massive crush on Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones. Best cure for a bad hangover? Cannonball! I love Fluid magazine because? They don’t give a f***! What does the future hold for the lovely Alexa? I’ve got a lot of exciting projects in the hopper: coming out with my first book in December, lots of travel, a major TV project, a wakeboard edit, celebrating my 10-Year Cancerversary, but most importantly doing lots of cool sh*t with cool people!

BRO'D TRIP WITH THE FRICKE BROS

| ADAM FRICKE

What exactly is the Bro’d Trip? The best way to describe it consists of these factors: Two brothers, four wheels (82 square ft. Sprinter Van), 50 states, 1 year. Justin and Adam Fricke (past Fluid Mag Intern) decided it was time to change their lives forever. They saved the funds, gutted the van, and hopped on the road for some wild times. The pair has taken life by the horns and dubbed the entire USA as their own backyard. They occupy their time with surfing, hiking, climbing and partying at all the right stops along the way. Let’s hear more about the peaks and valleys they have explored thus far. So how did you two get the idea for this awesome adventure? J: I was dating a girl and we went on a climbing trip to Tennessee to meet up with a couple friends. They were rounding out their year long road trip, and my girlfriend fell in love with the idea. She finally convinced me we should do one of our own and dumped me a few months after we started planning for it. Rather than throw in the towel I decided this was something I really wanted. Adam wasn't going to let me go alone, so we decided to make it a brotherly bonding trip. Did anyone inspire you to take such a journey? A: Aside from other vanlifers? I think the inspiration came from wanting to be our own bosses and to call the shots for ourselves. How many miles and how many states have you hit so far? 16 states. 16,804 miles and counting! We’ve been blown away by the coverage you’ve been getting, national and even global news, huh? A: Yeah, it's been crazy! We're not the only ones doing this kind of thing, so we're always honored when someone resonates with our story. We've made some great friends and connections through being in the media. It's opened doors for us that we wouldn't have been able to open ourselves. What has been the highlights of the trip thus far? J: Driving the country and seeing what most don't know is out there. I really feel fortunate that I'm coming back with stories and going to places in my own backyard

that most only dream about and sometimes don't know about. A: I love meeting interesting people along the way and stumbling across amazing places I never knew existed. I'd have to say one of my favorite days was driving up the Central California coast and scoring a perfect right point break all to ourselves. I'll never forget it. Tell us about a few mishaps. We know it isn’t all roses and daisies on the road. A: Oh man, there's been some rough days for sure. Our water line froze during a winter storm in North Carolina. We rode out a hurricane of a storm at an Alabama truck stop. We've had a couple unavoidable mechanical issues that always cost more than we expect. Most recently, we were working with one of our trip sponsors and had to valet our van because it wouldn't fit in the parking garage. We told the valet company and they still tried to park the 9' van in the 7' garage! You can only imagine how that turned out.... Are there times when you are like screw it, we are pulling the plug and heading back to good ole Florida, but then realize that you broadcasted to the world that you’re on a mission. J: Anytime the van has a mechanical issue and especially the parking garage incident with the valet company. I always think that it'd be so easy to call it quits and go back home to Florida with my tail between my legs, but what message is that sending? That it's cool to quit when the going gets tough? We're not all about that. What is the most important life lesson you’ve learned on the trip? J: Go with the flow and enjoy everything. That means even enjoying those junk moments. It's tough when it seems like everything's against us, but I wouldn't rather be doing anything else. A: Control what you can and look at obstacles as an opportunity to think outside the box. I still struggle with it, but that's been really important for me to remember in tough times. Any last shout outs? Love you Mom and Dad, thanks to all our friends back home following along and cheering us on, and of course thanks to the Fluid Family for helping us tell our story! LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Florida has always been a great market to both live and invest. As such, Real Estate values continue to grow, and there’s little evidence to show otherwise for the near future. The National Association of Realtors claims that pending home sales are at a 10-year high. “Pending home sales in the South jumped 6.8 percent to an index of 133.9 in April – 5.1 percent higher than last April.” I have several reasons to believe that there is more growth to come. First, inventory is low compared to the demand for housing, especially affordable housing. There are just not enough homes to meet demand. To put it in perspective, we would need 10,000 new homes per year just to stay current with the trend. Second, interest rates are still historically low. "Even if rates rise soon, sales have legs for further expansion this summer if housing supply increases enough to give buyers an adequate number of affordable choices during their search," adds Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist. As for home prices, the inflation-adjusted FL home price index indicates that even though home prices have moved up, they are still far below the highs of 2006-2007. But the single most important argument to make, Florida remains a desirable place to live for many.

I'm very fortunate to live in New Smyrna Beach, a place that has seen exceptional opportunities for both residential and commercial buyers. Orlando, a great market as well, continues to see the value in the beaches, the river and all that our coastline has to offer for preferred lifestyles. Of course, there’s always the out-of-state buyers that continue to invest in the Florida sunshine, and I don’t see that changing. As for the locals, we already know this and often have to pinch ourselves for getting to live in paradise. For those that know me, when I’m not busy working as a Realtor & General Contractor, I enjoy surfing, fishing, a variety of culinary tastes, the arts, and being around good people. So naturally I’ve found my slice of heaven. Thus, my passion for helping others discover NSB and the surrounding areas couldn’t be more real. I can only hope our community and others like it continue to preserve the natural wonders that are all around us.

How To Do Florida with Chad Crawford

When I was about 13 years old, I was convinced that I wanted to be a taxidermist when I grew up. I went through a phase where I would taxidermy anything that would stay still long enough. I also eat all my meals off of a wood plate.

| COURTESY OF 'HOW TO DO FLORIDA'

From catching a 440 pound sword fish in Islamorada to a family adventure on Anna Maria Island to treasure diving just outside of Sebastian Inlet, the how-to travel and discovery series How to Do Florida with Chad Crawford has something for everyone! How to Do Florida (HTDF) is an Emmy award-winning syndicated TV series that takes viewers all over Florida to discover exciting outdoor activities and shows how to do them. Also featured is a Florida cooking segment with flavor master, Chef Justin Timineri, as he prepares dishes with ingredients fresh from Florida. The series is produced by Central Florida-based Crawford Entertainment and airs all over Florida on broadcast affiliates and Fox Sports Sun cable network.

Let’s sit back and hear more about How to Do Florida from host and creator of the series, “Mr Florida” as he is called, Chad Crawford.

A 3rd generation Florida native, host Chad Crawford has what some would call a strange love affair with our state. Rumors have it that Crawford had his stomach pumped due to a massive citrus intake! A cultured Florida boy at heart, Chad relishes in the endless diversity this state can throw at him.

Tell us how you came up with the idea for the show? Along with my wife, Kristy, we owned a video production company that produced commercials for corporate clients like Reebok and Audi, but the thought of producing a series was always top of my mind. The problem was I didn’t know how to

- Intro: Bryan Forand

do it. I've always loved everything about Florida, from fishing and scuba diving, to camping and yes, citrus by the case. It wasn’t until I read the statistic that 70 percent of Florida residents are not born in Florida that I thought, wow there are so many people residing here who don’t know how to do Florida, and so the series was born. When we started, I was not supposed to be the host. We held an audition and had over 40 people show up, all with beautiful teeth and hair. After being frustrated that I could not find the right host, my wife said, “You need to be the host; this show is you.” I said, “No, I’m the director guy. I need to be behind the camera.” She convinced me to try one show. So I did, and 91 shows later I still have a job. I also learned to always do what my wife says. You have an extensive background in photography. How has this helped out your TV Series? The HTDF TV series is a product of my two passions, Florida and film. As the photographer

for my high school yearbook, my nickname was “Kid Flash”. It may have been a silly name, but it got me into sporting events. And, our yearbook teacher would let us stash our surfboards in the darkroom, so we could surf after school. After graduation I served in the U.S. Navy and then went on to attend Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. It was at Full Sail where I was introduced to film. I would explore Florida with my camera and capture what I loved. When we began developing the HTDF series, I always felt a burden to do Florida justice visually. There are so many beautiful settings here, so when we travel to shoot the show, I’m always anxious to pull over to capture a scene or jump up from dinner quickly to grab a sunset. It sometimes drives my crew crazy. As the host, having a production background really helps me communicate well with my crew as we work through how we will capture a segment. What has been your most memorable experience on the show? If I have to pick just one, I guess it would be the time a 70 pound eagle ray jumped in our boat. We were filming a segment on one of my passions, snook fishing, and had just fished the area where the state record was caught. Upon leaving, we were idling through a no-wake zone, when out of the water jumps a big eagle ray. It crashed into the center console, of which the captain and I were standing behind. It proceeded to beat the hell out of the boat, and I ripped off my microphone and was prepared to jump overboard. Eventually, it calmed down as we pulled the boat up on a sandbar where we could grab the ray by its mouth and pull it over the gunnel. As it slowly swam off, we counted our blessings that the boat wasn't on a plane when it came aboard. If so, it would have been a very different outcome!

Random fact about Florida that we need to know? Seventy percent of people living here are not from here. We are a melting pot like no other state. Fifty percent of water that is used goes on our yards. Florida has to seriously look at how we use water if we want to continue to grow. Florida has over 1,200 miles of coast line and over 10,000 lakes. It is vital these resources be protected for sustainability. Random fact about you? When I was about 13 years old, I was convinced that I wanted to be a taxidermist when I grew up. I went through a phase where I would taxidermy anything that would stay still long enough. I also eat all my meals off of a wood plate. Top three spots to go in Florida for a weekend getaway, and why? 1) Camp on a Florida spoil island, because you can kayak, fish, shrimp, crab and pretend it’s your island. The irony is it’s free! 2) Anna Maria Island, because it embodies the Florida lifestyle, and the community there works hard to keep it that way. No high-rise condos, just families and flip-flops. Oh, and world class snook and tarpon fishing. That’s a bonus! 3) Perdido Key, because it is secluded, hard to get to and it doesn’t look like Florida. It is a special place stuck in the past, in a good way.

Other highlights include me falling overboard from a bass boat, setting the hook on a big bass in Lake Okeechobee, and tearing out someone’s front yard and replacing it with native landscaping in the Bradenton area. I go beach camping in the only place it’s still allowed. Thankfully, I managed to stay out of the emergency room. All-in-all, it was a win, and another season is in the can. Any last words? Our motto is “national quality, local content.” That can be a tall order on a shoestring budget. My humble opinion is we are the hardest working show out there. We pack more content, humor, and soul into one show than most have in a whole series. Television today has no soul, it just moves from one tease to the next. Shows today are so prevalent with the almighty tease, that 20 seconds before they go to a commercial, they say something like, “Don’t go away or you’ll miss the end of the world.” This series was always about connecting people to our state and each other. The more people who fall in love with Florida, the more they will press in to the issues that impact it. Because of our extreme diversity, Florida has an identity crisis as residents struggle to connect with the state they have just moved to. I want them to know they have just moved to paradise and how to embrace our culture, our food, and our way of life, because it’s our Florida. So, let’s all work together and keep it wild and keep it beautiful for our children.

What can we look forward to in the next season of HTDF? We have a lot of great shows, and I’m really proud of this season. We will be launching our season with a one-hour special featuring my family in full vacation mode on Anna Maria Island. We also rent a yacht and travel up Florida’s west coast.

Why we love NSB - It is hard not to love NSB. It’s easily one of the best beach towns on the entire eastern seaboard! With great fishing, surfing and nightlife, what else could you really ask for?! I guess less sharks and bluer water, but hell, Smyrna has it pretty damn good in our book. History - New Smyrna Beach is a popular spot to visit. Nothing has changed since its origin. NSB’s claim to fame is that it occupies a notable place in history as the largest single attempt at a colonial settlement in what is now the territory of the USA. Dr. Andrew Turnbull from Scotland, obtained a grant of land from the British Crown. In 1768 he established a colony on the coastal plantation that is now known as New Smyrna Beach. Legends - Terry Presley, Randy Richenberg, Rick Tresher, Greg Geiselman, Jimmy Johnston, Leon Johnston, Mike Luke, Uncle Merk, Ross Pell, Joan Bailey, Rock Bailey, Charley Baldwin, Jimmy Lane, Dave Sokoll, Matt Clancy, Seadog, Clay Lyles, Lebo, Knucklehead, Bill and Kate Whatley, Marilyn Austin, Isabel Mclaughlin, Dale Cormican, Larry Glenn, Uncle Bob, Chip Clark, Kem Mcnair, David Coffee, Surbaugh, Nester, Luke, Evan Magee, Burger, Ronnie Hope, Woo, Steve Chancy, Stan the man, Clifford, Fee Fee, HK, Erie, Reese, JT, Charlie, Dolby.

The Crew - Schweizer Family, Geiselman Family, Johnston Family, Feindt Family, Schulz Family, Glenn Family, Preston Family, Nelly, Peanut, Spicoli, Hopper, Chili, Cloer Bros, Ollila Bros, Forand Bros, Tresher Bros, Carpenter, Duncan, Gorkin, Tupat, Collins, Perkins, Straun, Janda, Shane, Ian, Colin, Sean, Ben, Alridge, Ruddy, Dunphy, Kerr, Kyle, Ethan, Cousin Bobby, CR, Mellen, Fornes, Tracy Case, Jessie B, Hickman, JT Money, Christian, Connor, Chandler, Cronin, Willy D, Vermin, Nicastro, Matt Pearce, Victor, Bobby Levy, Teddy, Shaun, Tristan, Kara, Cory, DJ, Zach, Shamin, Jalin, Morgan, Due East, Holly, Golden. (sorry for all those we forgot, the list literally could go on for pages) Local attractions - New Smyrna’s best attributes are its’ natural assets. Surrounded by water, it’s hard not to be on the water at all times. Whether you’re boating to disappearing island for some weekend shenanigans or cruising the beach with your family, it is hard to deny that we live in paradise. Always remember, people work and save all year to come for a week to where we live. Respect the nature and always remember to clean up after yourself and others around you.

Eric Geiselman Dylan, Sarah and Nicole

Great dining experiences & happy hour honey holes - Smyrna is loaded to the gills with good eats. Try Clancys Cantina, Cafe Verde, Outriggers, Flagler Tavern, Merk’s Bar and Grill, Panheads, Lost Lagoon, Taco Shack, Yu-Mi Sushi, Yellow Dog, Third Wave, Cork Screw, and Off the Hook.

Late night hot spot - The infamous “Flagler Crawl” will keep all your nightly urges fulfilled. Off of Flagler Ave., we recommend the Flagler Tavern, Traders, Barracudas, Peanuts and the OHM Bar. Off of Flagler Ave, Merks is the spot for good grinds and frosty beverages. Beachside Tavern is host to some of the best acts to come to our area. Also, one last hidden gem is Casey’s Bar. Best places to stay - Black Dolphin Inn, Hampton Inn, or the Holiday Inn pretty much covers something for everyone. There is the random hole in the wall motel on the mainland, if you have a strict budget and not looking for a view. It is worth the extra bucks to stay on beachside. Hear me now, believe me later. Something you probably didn't know about NSB During Prohibition in the 1920s, the city and its river islands were popular sites for moonshine stills and hideouts for rum-runners. They would come from the Bahamas through Mosquito Inlet, which is now known as Ponce De Leon Inlet. "New Smyrna" became "New Smyrna Beach" in 1947, when the city annexed the seaside community of Coronado Beach..

Noah Schweizer Flager Avenue, the heart of New Smyrna

Babes and dudes - Due to the fact that there is a solid nightlife, it is a great spot to meet a new friend. The beach from Spring to Fall is pretty epic too. From all the pro surfers godbods who live in the area, to the influx of the Orlando crowd, you can pretty much be guaranteed five star eye candy. Something different - If the beach and the river isn’t your thing, the golfing is pretty stellar in our area. Home to 4 courses-The New Smyrna Municipal Course, Hidden Lakes, Turnbull Bay, and Venetian Bay. Enjoy top notch courses year round!

Fisherman's Paradise - Situated on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River, New Smyrna Beach can have an abundance of fish species. In the lagoon and river you’ll find trout, redfish, snook, flounder, black drum, and on certain occasions tarpon. Offshore keep an eye out for triggerfish, snapper, grouper, and lobster. Even surf fishing can be quite productive at times, with catches such as pompano, whiting, flounder, redfish, and Spanish mackerel. Local knowledge (Insider info) - Wintertime can be a great time of year. Yeah, there are still the snowbirds to deal with, but the river and the beach is super uncrowded. You can have some serenity to yourself. Best time of year - Despite the statement above about the serenity of winter, it is hard to touch summer. Disappearing Island is primed for the party goers, ready for the sun, and frosty beverages Hazards - As we all know, New Smyrna Inlet is well known as the Shark Bite Capital of the world. You have a much better chance of getting bit in NSB than anywhere else in the world. For example, our Editor has been bit before and the Art Director has a picture that has gained worldwide recognition with a shark jumping in the background.

Some of the food even contains the beers they brew, like their famous beer-infused, stone-oven-baked pizza and their Picnic Pils braised bratwurst! Tomoka originally got its name from the local River and State Park, and it's that love of the outdoors and Florida that inspires the brewmaster's recipes for beers that contain in-season Florida Agriculture. They brew a series of 4 "Florida Weisse" sour ales that feature seasonal fruits in Florida. Even their 3 Flagship beers,

July/August Fishing Report

Inshore Fishing Report This time of year inshore in Central Florida produces great fishing for redfish, trout, and even a few tarpon. Water levels are back up again (thank god), which is producing some great shoreline sight fishing on the shallow grass flats in Mosquito Lagoon. The algae bloom looks like it's decreasing quite a bit , from Mosquito Lagoon all the way up to Ponce Inlet has returned to normal summer water clarity conditions. This is producing excellent fishing for redfish cruising shorelines and oyster clumps, tailing on grass flats, and floating around on deeper grass flats. Historically this is the best time of year to catch world class Speckled Trout that can get up to 10lbs. in weight. Florida is the mecca for fishing, get ready for some tight lines and big fish this summer!!

Offshore Fishing Report The waters are scorching hot as summer is in full swing. You can expect the bite to continue to be active. Look for the shrimp boats and chase for some awesome action. You never know what kind of monsters you might hook up with in this scenario. Don’t be surprised to put up a fight with tarpon, spinners, or black-tip sharks. You can still expect to get into sport fish as warm water is still around. Look for schools of mahi around weed beds or any other floating structures. If you’re lucky, you might still hook up with wahoo, sail, or the elusive marlin! Always keep a look out for water temperature breaks, current rips and flying fish. If you encounter any of these you should be in the meat.

Stay still.

Sharkbanz & The Modom Surf Leash

Let’s get one thing straight, nothing is ever 100% guaranteed when you enter the ocean. Shark Attacks are a fascination that we will never be able to predict or completely understand. With that being said, I’ve always dreamed of a way to prevent them. The latest and greatest projects in the surf community are two amazing options that are using shark deterrent technology. Entering into the ring are two heavyweights, Sharkbanz and the Modom Surf Leash. According to Sharkbanz website, “Sharkbanz uses specially patented magnetic technology to deter sharks from attacking people. Most shark attacks occur in murky, shallow waters off the coast where there are a high number of swimmers and sharks sharing the same space. In this environment, sharks rely heavily on their electro-receptors instead of their eyes to see what’s around them. They possess the most sensitive electro-magnetic sense of all known

animals and use it to judge distance, shape, and even the heart rate of other animals near them. Most of the time, sharks get it right and leave people alone. Occasionally, they don't. Sometimes when relying on their electro-receptors, a curious shark may bite a person in order to figure out what he or she is. These unprovoked “hit and run” attacks are

the most common type, and Sharkbanz are an excellent defense against them. As the shark approaches a person wearing Sharkbanz, magnetic waves coming from the band disrupt its electro-receptors and it quickly turns away. The experience for the shark is, “like a person suddenly shining a very bright light in your eyes in a dark room, and it's not pleasant”, according to Dr. Stroud. Once a shark comes near the band, it frequently leaves the area and does not return."

Facts about Sharkbanz & Modom Surf Leash PANTONE 7540 • Neither the Sharkbanz or Modom Shark leash use batteries, so they require no charging and don’t lose their deterrent powers over time. • Uses powerful magnetic technology that can damage electrical and medical devices, so make sure the customer keeps the protective box. This box should also be used for air travel. • Remember, there is no guarantee of no shark interactions. This product is all about reducing the risk. It’s similar to wearing a helmet on a bike or a seat belt in a car. • The devices don’t harm sharks or other sea creatures. Shark Attacks Compared to Other Risks • 75 times more likely to be killed by lightning. • 132 times more likely to drown at the beach. Shark Attack Statistics • Since 1882 in Florida, Volusia and Brevard Counties lead with the most shark attacks. Volusia with 275, and Brevard with 130. • Avoid wearing bright yellow. It is known as "yum yum yellow!” *Facts about Shark Attacks Data from: © International Shark Attack File Florida Museum of Natural History, Univ. of Florida

BRAEDEN DUNE KOPEC | 10 YRS OLD Homebase: Flagler Beach Sponsors: O’Neill, Quiet Flight Surfboards, The Surf Station, SunBum, Nixon. Crew: My mom and dad are my best crew, but I love surfing with all sorts of people that I know all over Florida, Costa Rica, North Carolina, Cali and Puerto Rico. Making friends is what is so great about surfing. Just by sitting in a line up at any break in the world you can make a new friend, and it’s so cool to run into them when you go back to that spot to surf some other day. Your dream trip takes you where and with whom? Back to Costa Rica. I always love going there. Probably Playa Hermosa or Witch’s Rock. I’d take my friend Frankie Mazza. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Getting my learner’s permit, so I can eventually drive to any break at any time and continuing to set goals to keep pushing my surfing. The main thing is to still be having as much fun in the water as I’m having now. Who is your shaper? The best, Bruce Ragan. He’s an awesome shaper and he’s also a great person, which is PHOTOS: RUDDY

important. I really appreciate his talent and what he does. Favorite things about surfing Flagler Beach? Of course, the pier. There’s so much variety of conditions. You can charge it on big days or have a lot of fun in the shore pound. What type of music do you listen to? 80’s! Billy Idol,

“ I love hunting for that perfect air section or barreling wave. I’m happy being in the water even when there’s not a barrel or air section anywhere!

"

Simple Minds, Men at Work, Journey, Depeche Mode, Quiet Riot and even some Michael Jackson! Favorite non-surf movie? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Best place around Flagler Beach for breakfast? There’s a few good ones actually, but I love it when my mom has a biscuit from the pier restaurant or a donut waiting for me when I come out of the water after dawn patrol. I actually like the breakfasts my mom makes at home the best! What's your instagram name? @braedenkopec Favorite app and why? I like looking at the surf forecast and weather apps because it’s pretty interesting. Of course I like a few game apps too. Big airs or deep pits? I love hunting for that perfect air section or barreling wave. I’m happy being in the water even when there’s not a barrel or air section anywhere! Best advice an old person has given you? It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. Favorite book? Holes by Louis Sachar Favorite cartoon character? Road Runner.....beep, beep! Where do you go to school? I’m homeschooled. It’s given me a lot of opportunities, not just surfing, but seeing and learning so much and going places. I really appreciate being able to do it. Who will win the world title in 2016? Jordy looks so strong coming back this year. Be cool if he got it. Maybe Kelly has it in him again.

If you owned a restaurant, what would you make? Pizza, but I do make some pretty killer egg omelets! Thanks to? God, my parents, my sponsors, my shaper and people who have supported me over the years. I really, really appreciate it.

Talk Story: Beaver Massfeller Stephen “Beaver” Massfeller is one person that has truly paved the way for so many of us. Growing up in Daytona Beach, graduated from Seabreeze High in 1973, Massfeller followed his dreams and traveled the world as a professional surfer. This is long before the big contracts with national sponsors and first class accommodations. Although Beaver was traveling on a budget, his stories and experiences are top notch. I’ve had the experience of being a close friend to Beaver for quite some time, and not only do I enjoy his worldly adventures, but I also enjoy what he has taught me about humanity and the proper way to view this world. In 1983, at the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii, Beaver was competing at the most dangerous wave in the world. He had a severe accident, went head first into the reef, and was pulled out of the water unconscious. Although he recovered completely, he was left with a massive skull fracture over his right eye, which required a steel plate. I didn’t know Beaver prior to his accident, so I can’t tell you that he always had this positive outlook on life, but one thing I can confirm is he is one of the kindest humans you will ever meet. Hands down an absolute legend, who inspires me on a daily basis, and to this day still rips in the water. Let’s hear more about what makes Beaver tick. What motto do you live by, if any? “Never hurry, never worry” was my friend Gaulden Reed’s saying, and I probably live that motto as much as anything else. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you” is very strong too. What was it like in the 70’s being a surfer in our area? It was less crowded and not as commercial, so the vibe wasn’t so competitive. Homemade boards and a lot of fun, little waves. Both sides of the inlet broke better then. That really sounds “all timers,” but it’s true. Surfers were more counter culture then. We were our own little tribe. Society frowned upon us spending

so much time on the beach and in the surf, but we didn’t care. If you can go back 40 years what advice would you give yourself? Try to give more than you take. If I give myself too much good advice, my life won’t travel the same arc, and I might be different or miss something I’ve experienced. So that’s all. What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the Daytona Beach area? There were no beach tolls, less tall buildings, fewer cars and cleaner water. Lifeguards were lifeguards, not cops. Dogs could go to the beach. Surfers with bad attitudes were scarcer. On the NSB side there were five or six good peaks from the rocks to that first condo and there was no condo. It spread things out a bit, less pressure. After your accident, did it change your outlook on life? I’ve always been laid back, so I think I may have become more appreciative of family, friends, and the people I love. It could all be gone so suddenly. I’ve heard so many of your stories that I cherish. What is the best traveling experience in your life? Jeffries Bay, South Africa, 1977. The perfect right point, overhead and bigger for ten days. What was the pinnacle of your career? The 1982-83 winter North Shore El Nino year. Waimea broke almost once a week all winter, and it usually breaks once or twice a season. What is our youth lacking? Adversity. Hard knocks create humility. They’ve had it too easy and that creates arrogance and a sense of entitlement. They need to be guided by wise elders. Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs or thank you’s? Thank you for the recognition and to Bernie Crouch for all the great surfboards you’ve shaped and we designed over the years. I stand on the shoulders of giants.
