SUMMER LOVE Summer has so many moods in Florida, and this year is no exception. From scorching hot days to mind blowing afternoon storms, we are in the thick of it. It starts to feel a little bit like groundhog day, but hell we live in paradise and there isn't much to not love about our area. Locals and tourist have one thing in common, we all know we have something special here in good ole Flori-duh! Regardless of where we came from, we all have one common goal; to try and preserve our area for future generations. I was sitting on the beach during fourth of July weekend and a plane flew over with the perfect message, "Toes in the sand. Trash in the can. I really hope that this message hit all those visiting our beaches and waterways. Be part of the movement and try to make a difference. On that note it is a perfect time for us to help out as well, Fluid Magazine will be hosting beach clean ups and want you to be a part of the process. Send us your ideas on how we can make each event better. Try and make a difference on your own. When you are packing up at the beach or river, obviously pickup all your stuff, but take a second and load a few extra things in your bag. Make a little extra effort and let’s keep preserving this paradise we call home. Bryan Forand | Editor

MISS SUNSHINE

BAYLEE PEEPLES 19 YEARS

Where do you live? New Smyrna Beach, Florida Originally from? Born and raised in New Smyrna Beach Occupation? Going to college is a full time job for me right now. Where would your dream trip take you? I love the tropics so probably anywhere tropical with good waves... Bali, Tahiti, Fiji, any of those would work. Just as long as I can spend most my time in a bikini! What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I started at Premiere Model Management when I was about 14 (aka very shy, lol). As I did more work I broke out of that shell and got to express myself. I love meeting new people and trying new experiences. Tell us something about you that might surprise us? Well, my dad makes surfboards and with that you tend to learn to surf at a much earlier age. For me and my siblings it was before we knew how to swim. My dad would take us out and hold us (of course, on almost flat waves.) How many times a day do you use social media? Sadly, I would say about a little under half of my day. I love checking in and seeing what my friends are up to. If you were a skittle, what color would you be and why? Definitely one in the tropical pack for sure and probably one of the berry ones. Actually any of those, just not YELLOW! I’m not really a fan of any yellow candies. Real House Wife's or Sunday Night Football? I'm more of a MLB kinda girl, but I would pick Sunday Night Football, hands down! I love sports. Got a boyfriend? Actually I do, he's the best. He's what you want in a boyfriend, for sure! Worst Pickup Line? Thank goodness no one has ever tried one on me but, "If I had to rate you 1-10, it would be a 9 because I'm the 1 you are missing." Most important thing on a first date? You have to be confident. Having a funny personality but also being a gentlemen. That's what always wins me over. If you had to live in another state besides Florida, which state would you choose and why? Honestly I don't know if I could answer that. I've only ever known Florida. Best beach in Florida? New Smyrna Beach, DUH!! Favorite celebrity? Probably Selena Gomez Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? Surfers! My dad has always warned me to stay away from them, but who can help it. They are so cute. Growing up with surfing you tend to gravitate toward them (aka my boyfriend). I love Fluid magazine because? I love that it keeps us informed on hot topics in our local area and it shows what we have to offer. Plus of course, can't forget about Miss Sunshine! What does the future hold for the lovely Baylee? I will have my Bachelors in Nursing and hopefully become a traveling nurse with that, so I can travel all over the world. Most importantly being happy.

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT

BEHIND THE LENS

Photographer:

LUIS 'WICHO' RODRIGUEZ Shooting since: 35 years + Age: 48 @wichofilmspr

Hi Wicho, where and when was the last image you captured? My last photo was taken last night at 3:00am. It was at a secret spot I discovered to take photos of the Milky Way, and it came out amazing! Give us a little background on how you got into photography? My dad is one of the most successful photographers in Puerto Rico and has a photo store called Cine Foto. When I was 8 years old he bought me a Brownie camera, but that was strutted quick. When I was 12 he bought me a Yashica, and that one was awesome. My first job was an air shoot for developing the nes school buses garage for our town. I got paid $40.00 and I felt rich, hahaha. I Moved to Daytona Beach in 1995 and went to DBCC for the photography program. After that I did two surfing Flicks called Killing The Pier and the Forget Flick and then did some traveling to film. Also I did 4 years of freelance for Daytona Speedway as a NASCAR Photographer. Then I started to help at the Ocean Deck, where I was a floor manager today. I have 2 sons, Gaby and Emilio, and my beautiful lady Tanya. Also I’m the photo ambassador for Bomber Eyewear and Broq Gear. I just got approached by @disupdates, Daytona Speedway to be the photographer for Instagram, pretty cool. I surf, I play Percussion, I ride Harley’s, and enjoy my family at max. I WORK REAL HARD AND PLAY HARDER!! What inspires you? My inspiration is the love and passion for Mother Nature and to help any person to be a kind human, RESPECT. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photographer? Yes, my dad and Don Buck, one of the best photographers for NASCAR. Buck knows the track so

16

good. Since day one he told me the pros and cons to be successful as a photographer on NASCAR. What is your favorite place to shoot? I’m not a studio photographer, so I would have to say mother nature and surfing. My favorite spots to shoot are Pipeline in Hawaii, as well as Las Dunas & Manglito in Puerto Rico. Locally, I’ve found a new place for the Milky Way shoots and I also like to shoot The Loop. Are you a major adrenaline junkie or what? Seems like a lot of your images are focused on chasing crazy storms and putting yourself in some dangerous situations. My blood runs high and I’m all about adrenaline to the max when I hear lightning bolts. It is scary but I love it! Are you currently working on any new projects? Yes, I am working with Daytona Speedway on their Instagram and also plan on making a surf flick very soon. I also do freelance for the Weather Channel, which I covered the entire storm of Hurricane Mathew last year. It was an amazing experience. Do you have a few tips for aspiring photographers? For anyone that has passion for photography, get a nice camera, shoot every day, test different settings and if you can't figure out, send me an email or find me at Instagram, @wichofilmspr, and I’d be happy to help you go take some photos. Any Last words or shout outs? Life is amazing and I see beauty in all aspects of humans and mother nature. So if you have the same passion, don't stop and live your dreams. My ultimate goal would be to work for National Geographic and I will not stop till I reach it! Thanks Fluid crew and I also appreciate the love you have for me and my photos, big hug!

How did Johnny Reed Foley get its' start and get to where it is today? I started performing when I was really young in church and eventually got my first real gigs playing Saturday nights at McCharacters by the airport in NSB. GOJUICE

We get to experience a slower pace of life here, but the majority of us enjoy an extremely active lifestyle. Long days on the water, charging at the beach or just looking good requires the right fuel. That is why GoJuice has been a great addition to New Smyrna, because they offer fresh made to order juices, smoothies, including very popular Acai bowls, and Original Banana Coffee. The menu is designed to taste great, while offering the food that keeps you moving and enjoying the life you want. Plus, they give you the option to make it your own by adding fresh mix-ins like Protein, Bee Pollen and the ever popular Ginger and Turmeric Shots. Their current location is right off Flagler Avenue, right next door to the shuffle board courts. GoJuice originally launched in Nosara, Costa Rica. Founder, Nick Fairman, started the

concept on a whim to support his desire to live down in Costa Rica and alleviate himself from the rat race. Prior to launching GoJuice, Fairman was on the complete opposite end of the spectrum working at a tech startup. It was time for a change and GoJuice was the perfect opportunity. Fairman took his passion for a better life and channeled it into GoJuice and created a company focused on bringing a colorful & convenient accessibility to health and the Pura Vida lifestyle. Their main inspiration is Pura Vida, which we define as “pure life”; to live a peaceful, simple, uncluttered life with a deep appreciation for nature, family and friends: a real living that reflects happiness, well-being, conformity and satisfaction. Gojuice offers plenty of outdoor seating that lets you get some vitamin D and do some people watching. Plus, their delicious smoothie bowls are topped with all sorts of goodness like shredded coconut, perfectly aligned strawberries and a dollop of peanut butter - making it an instagram worthy breakfast or lunch #healthyAF. Our current favorite is the ginger kale. It’s the perfect mix of tastes great and is good for me. Plus, walking around drinking green juice instantly makes you feel like the healthiest person ever, which is an added bonus!

BOCAS DEL TORO PANAMA

Photos: SETH STAFFORD

P

aradise is only a short plane ride away. Bocas del Toro is a province of Panama comprising an island chain off the Caribbean coast, plus a section of nearby mainland with biodiverse rainforest. These islands are only 32 km (20mi) south of the Costa Rican border and slightly over 100km (60mi) away from the surf rich Pacific coast. Isla Colón, the main island, is home to the capital, Bocas Town, a central hub with restaurants, shops and nightlife. There are a variety of other islands, but only two other are inhabited, Carenero and Bastimentos. Water Taxi’s go between all three islands, with a very low cost of about $2-$3. Bocas Del Toro has a natural environment that greeted

the original explorers. It remains intact, however the inexorable march of progress and expansion is becoming more apparent. The city of Bocas del Toro exudes a decidedly Caribbean style and flavor, and is notable as Panama's only city built exclusively using wood. A building boom and accelerating growth are exposing many of the beautiful, virtually deserted beaches to more people than ever before. There are some remarkable surf spots in this zone, but like many locations, timing is everything. To help you out we created a list of some tips to help guide you on the ultimate getaway, catered specifically for likeminded Floridians.

Sponsored by:

25

Transportation First and foremost, by no means is Bocas Del Toro easy to get to. The commute has detoured many travels for good reason. Flying from Orlando, you will most likely have to stop in Miami first, from there you will fly into Panama City. From Panama City, the next step is to catch a puddle jumper to Bocas. In most cases you will need to stay overnight in Panama City and catch the commuter flight the next morning. There is an option of avoiding the puddle jumper, but the next best option is a 10 hour bus ride and a 30 min water taxi. On a side note, Panama City is hands down the nicest city in Central America. I would describe it as a cleaner version of NYC. It doesn’t hurt that Panama City has amazing accommodations, delicious restaurants and a touch of sin city with beautiful women and plenty of casinos. It is so easy to overlook Panama when you are comparing it to somewhere like Puerto Rico, where the plane ticket is 60% less expensive. Hear me know and believe me later, put Puerto Rico on the back burner for a winter and give Bocas Del Toro a go!

History When Christopher Columbus arrived to Bocas del Toro in 1502 during his fourth and final New World voyage, he found a true slice of paradise. He was so taken by the beauty of Bocas Del Toro, that he affixed his name to many sites, including Isla Colón (Columbus Island), Isla Cristóbal (Christopher Island) and Bahia de Almirante (Admiral’s Bay). Throughout the 17th century, the archipelago was a well-known haven for pirates. The buccaneers repaired their ships on the islands, built others with wood from their forests and fed upon the many sea turtles that nested on the beaches. There are many stories of pirates hiding treasure on a number of the islands, but to date none of this loot has been found (or at least r eported).

Seasons Peak season is December through late April. December and January can be quite rainy, but with that being said, usually when a big swell rolls through it is accompanied by challenging weather. Due to the fact that Bocas isn’t the easiest destination to get to, it’s kind of mind blowing when you take in to account the travelers that make their way to the islands. Somehow word has spread to Europe, the majority of tourist seem to be backpackers from Europe, who endure the high airfare for the low cost of accommodations and transportation. Bicycle is the preferred mode of transportation on the island.

Photo: Jimmy Johnston

What to Expect Bocas del Toro is an archipelago with a beautiful biodiversity and a melting pot of lovely people with different roots. It has a Caribbean reggae vibe that is the perfect fit for these islands. Bocas del Toro isn’t what I would describe as fancy but you will definitely be relaxed! Flip-flops every day and night, swimwear all day long, Panama hats, local beers, great food everywhere and hot weather with an occasional drop of warm rain. To paint a picture for your imagination, think sandy beaches, crystal clear water, surfing and diving, good food and happy people. There aren't many places that you can go where you feel like you are on the water at all times. Between the waterfront dining, water taxi’s to bars or the surf, and the amazing Caribbean beaches, it is the perfect recipe to keep you mesmerized while on vacation.

LOCAL PROFILE - FISHING GUIDE

FISHING CHARTER

CAPT. JOE LYALL 28

What are three items you never leave the dock without? Fuel, Bait & Water. What is your favorite species to target? Pelagic Species; Marlin, Dolphin, Tuna & Wahoo. Preferred Rig? Boat - Spencer 70' Reel - Shimano Has the bite been hot lately? Yes, off of Oregon Inlet for tuna & St. Thomas for marlin on the north drop. Locally the bite for Mangrove snappers has been really good with spinning tackle & the Tarpon bite behind the shrimp boats on the coastline is starting to turn on. Who is your favorite person to fish with and why? I really love fishing with my wife, because I enjoy spending quality time with her and, even though I fish for a living, every time I get a day off she wants me to take her fishing, Haha. I enjoy doing that, though, because it puts a smile on her face. Happy wife - Happy life!

What do you feel is the biggest challenge fishing in our area? Government restrictions on red snapper as well as the tide & offshore currents. The last couple of years we haven't really had a mahi season that has produced a lot of fish, which has made summer fishing a little tough. Do you fish tournaments? Yes, occasionally. I have won the Triple Crown in the Gulf of Mexico, tournaments in Case De Campo, Mississippi Gulf coast billfish tournament. Tournaments are fun, but they add a lot of stress to something that's supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable. I always say if you can't take a fist full of cash and light it on fire then you shouldn't be fishing a tournament. I believe Tournaments are 25% skill and 75% luck. Do you have a rival when it comes to fishing competitively? No, I don't believe in rivalry. I'm all about team work and the more boats and captains in your back pocket to work with the better fisherman you will be in the long run. A lot of offshore fishing now a days is about networking with

other captains, because there is a lot of water to cover out there. I like to see everybody catch fish, and I fish by the golden rule. Everglades Boats are the best, we had a blast the other day! I think it's awesome that they are such a well built inshore and offshore boat that is manufactured locally here in Edgewater, Florida & sold world wide. I had an opportunity to go out with Shane Kwaterski, their director of dealer development on the 36' Everglades. It was a rough day out with large seas and the boat's performance exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend Everglades! What’s your most embarrassing fishing story/ memory? I took my wife out on the Betsy in Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic to catch her first blue marlin. About an hour and a half into it a nice blue showed up on the teaser. We were able to tease the fish all the way up into the corner of the right cockpit. I had a perfect pitch bait scenario - Ballyhoo with a chugger. The fish came up and gave me a good opportunity to catch him with the drop back style fishing. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my wife seeing the bite and she was so pumped. As I engaged the real in gear to come tight on the fish there was nothing there. As I was cranking in the bait the fish had disappeared. My wife was standing there eager, with her belt on ready to go. I only had an empty hook with a bodiless ballyhoo, head only. I was so bummed. However, I did take her out a few days later, and she caught her first and second Blues in the same day. Where else, besides Florida, have you had the opportunity to fish? Gulf of Mexico - From Texas to Panama Beach, FL, All of the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, The U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Aruba, St. Maarten, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, The great barrier reef in Australia, North Carolina & The great lakes. Any last words or people to thank? I would like to thank Tim & Todd Phillips, my current employers on the Bid Time, as well as Mark Rogers for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the team. Polly Cullen for giving me my first job on the critter fleet in 1998 where my fishing career started in Florida & Captain Lee Carver & Captain Tim Garrett, two of the greatest mentors I could have ever asked for.

SMYRNA SURFARI CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

Photo: Dean Stewart Photography

Wes Dykes and Kevin Schubert - Surfari Club Officers April O-Gorman - Smyrna Surfari Club Scholarship Jacob Schomer - Wayne Peck Scholarship Amaya Whitfield & Dillon Lizak - Surfari Spirit Memorial Scholarship @surfariclub

In 2017, The Smyrna Surfari Club celebrated its 38th year of existence. It’s the second oldest, continuously active private surf club in the world, and to our knowledge, the first to have a scholarship program. The club was founded in 1979 by thirteen local surfers, most of whom are still active in the Club. Current membership is about 80 active members. The first surfing club in New Smyrna was founded in 1963; the Smyrna Surf Club. The Coronado Surf Club was the next group to organize, however, these early groups faded away as many members left the area in search of careers and/or college degrees. The new group wanted to be more than a social club. They decided that the Surfari Club would establish its identity as one of public service. And so, the Surfari Scholarship was born.

The Surfari Club’s mission from the beginning was to raise money, and donate it to a local surfer for their college education. The best football player in high school always gets a chance to go to college, and so does the best basketball player. The Surfaris thought that the best surfer deserved to go, too. The Club organized a surf contest, sold raffle tickets and the proceeds went to fund the first Smyrna Surfari Club High School Scholarship for $500. It was awarded to Brian Millard in 1980. Brian went on to found his own CPA firm in Winter Park. Since 1979, the Club has hosted over 100 surf contests, awarded over $200,000 in scholarship monies and similar stories of the success of the Surfari Club Scholarship recipients over the ensuing 38 years are too numerous to cover here.

JULY/AUGUST FISHING OUTLOOK

FISHING REPORT OFFSHORE On the nearshore reefs dropping down a Pinfish will most likely get you a bite from a rare and endangered Red Snapper, but if you can, find the Amberjack. Anglers have been limiting out pretty easily with Pinfish or live Sardines. If trolling is your drug then the Kingfish have been around for a little while now. Trolling spoons with a planer or trolling live blue runners or larger Sardines on stinger rigs seem to be getting the bigger bites. If you are feeling like you wanna venture out further the big Mango Snappers have been pretty hot around the 90' depth on natural bottom. Look for fish to mark on your bottom machine near subtle ledges and hard bottom drop offs. Cut Sardines with a good chum slick have been working very well for these fish.

You'll always score when on the water with Capt. Jarrod Tuttle! | Photo Courtesy of: Driftwood Charters

INSHORE Mangrove Snapper inshore bite has been really good with a lot of keeper fish, some getting into that 2-3lb range. Use live shrimp or finger mullet if you can find them. Bull Reds are pretty consistent in the main part of the channel from Ponce Inlet to the south causeway in New Smyrna with a few slot sized fish mixed in, on the bottom with live bait (Mullet, Pinfish, or Croakers if available). Jack Crevelles are thick just about anywhere in the river right now always providing a good fight to keep the day exciting. Tarpon are around but picky at times. When they do eat, a free lined Mullet or Blue Crab seems to do the trick.

TALK STORY

TALK STORY: JIMMY JOHNSTON From generation to generation, the last name, Johnston, is well known in the surf community in our area. Jimmy and his older brother, Leon, were the ones who paved the way for many of us. I’ve been fortunate to know Jimmy Johnston my entire life. Jimmy’s oldest daughter is my closest friend and basically my sister. Growing up and surfing at NSB inlet, I knew to stay out of Jimmy’s way when he was on a wave. Regardless, if I was basically a nephew to him, he wasn’t the type of guy you wanted to drop in on or get in his way. Out of the water, nicest guy in history, in the water, you better have some respect. Johnston’s generation came from an entirely different era and they experienced our beaches untouched and with minimal crowds. Lets' hear more from local legend, my uncle Jimmy Johnston.

What motto do you live by, if any? Never give up! That's what I've had to live by throughout my life. And I can honestly say it hasn't always been easy. How long have you been surfing for? 53 years. What was it like in 70’s and 80's being a surfer in our area? I think the seventies and eighties were the best days for our Inlet. The way the inlet caught the swells and lined up was a sight to see! We would surf shark shallows, inside the rocks, and the Inlet. You wouldn't believe the barrels that would fire back in those days! The bottom has become much different over the past few decades. We still catch the swells but the contour of the ocean floor has

changed, I believe, due to the dredging of the inlet over the years. Who were the top guys at the inlet back in those days? There were so many great surfers in that time period. The early 70's was when shortboards and leashes came on the scene. Boards went from 10 foot to 6 foot practically over night, so hitting the lip and carving a turn had a whole new meaning! I was surfing with Jeff Crawford, David & Dale Segraves, Leon Johnston, Chip Clark, Ronnie Shippman, Randy Schwoerer, Kem Mcnair, Charlie Baldwin, Rick Tresher, David Coffee, Randy Richenberg, Isabel Mclaughlin, Terry Pressley, Mary"Bowen" Johnston, Kevin & Missy "Lee" Schweizer, Jimmy "JL" Lane, Pat Altez, Clay Lyles, Bernie Crouch, Rocky Jowers, Rock & Joan Bailey,

Ross Pell and into the 80s with Jeff Buhler, Greg Geiselman, Even Magee, Joe Surbaugh, Jimmy McKenzie, Gina Geiselman, Greg "Tarantula" Lewis, Mike Luke, Jimmy Guzman, and Conrad Perez. My list is so much longer and I'm sorry I couldn't mention everyone. Those were the glory days! What I mean by that is apart from a few photographs, these days are seen only in the archives of our minds. We lived in a time when there was no GoPro to capture the moment and definitely no selfies! Just the memories of a perfect day with everyone who loved to surf! If you can go back 40 years what advice would you give yourself? Best advice is buy lots of land in Bethune Beach, live everyday as if it's your last, and marry the girl of your dreams young!

What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the New Smyrna Beach area? I miss the days when Hathaways was the only grocery store, and the freedom of driving on the beach at night! A lot has changed over the years but one thing remains the same, this is home! What is the best traveling experience in your life? Best trip was a 3 month of surfing down the California coast to San Blas, Mexico with my then girlfriend, Mary Bowen, and her friend, Sherry Lee. We caught incredible waves at Stoner's "Island" now Stoner's Point. Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs or thank you’s?

I am thankful to God for all the wonderful people I have met throughout my surfing life. I am grateful for my brother Leon who introduced me to surfing and has given me many cherished memories and I am so glad to have his sons, daughters and grandchildren in my life. Thanks to my wonderful wife, daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren. I am a happy man because of them. Thank you Bryan Forand and Fluid Magazine for the honor of being in their magazine!
