FROM THE

EDITOR Welcome to our first issue fully dedicated to the place we live and love so much...”The Florida Issue”. Every issue we rack our brains for new ideas to keep you entertained. It just made perfect sense to focus on the ole’ sunshine state. As I sit in Nicaragua on vacation with my wife and friends, I ponder what makes Florida so special. Even though I am on vacation in what is my paradise (perfect waves, amazing fishing, yummy inexpensive meals, and breathtaking views), I still know Florida is where my heart is. I’ve had times that I got sick of the little things that bug me about Florida, but then there are so many positives. You have to step back and remember that we live in a destination state. People save all year to come visit our amazing beaches and attractions galore. We have all the best options life has to offer at our finger tips, good people, endless water activities, great weather, and a state we are proud to call home! Get out of your daily grind and enjoy the finer things Florida has to offer.

MISS SUNSHINE

MISS SUNSHINE PHOTO: PATRICK RUDDY

WhERE do YOU live? The sunshine state!! Originally from? Poland.

Occupation? Postgrad. Did you enjoy shooting with Fluid Magazine?

Of course, Ruddy(Fluid Photog) is great and is an easy going person. It was interesting and fun! Where would your dream trip take you? I can’t wait to backpack through South East Asia. How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Haha oh man. Way too much! I need to put a stop to that now. Most important thing on a first date? Don’t be too pushy trying to hold my hand or be too romantic, first few dates should be fun and careless. Turn on’s? Motivation, and red wine. haha. Turn off’s? Don’t be cocky. Got a boyfriend? Yes I do :) Perfect Date? Fun and adventurous. Mini road trip, kayaking, diving, or even a walk through a

state park. Something you can’t do everyday. Beach, River, or Asphalt? Asphalt. Just kidding, beach definitely, unless its longboarding or roller blading then asphalt. Best Beach in Florida? New Smyrna Beach! Might be due to that ice cream spot with like 30 different flavors. That and best waves in Florida! Favorite celebrity? Don’t really have one. I think Natalie Portman is absolutely gorgeous. Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? Being an artist I met too many weird ones out there. Definitely surfers. Tell us about your experience of shooting with SEI Boutique for the launch of their new website. Jaymi the owner of SEI, is our favorite person...we love her!!! Jaymi is the best! She’s such

a chill and kind person. Her boutique has the best suits

and stuff I’ve seen in Central Florida. Shooting for her Sei website was a pleasure! Plus I always end up finding so many items I want there! :) Favorite Spot to have a good night out? Anywhere! I always try to have a great night out. But preferably a tiki bar on a beach on a hot summer night. Favorite Sports team? Celtics! Go Courtney! Worst Pickup Line? It really bothers me when people try to holla while I’m driving or at a red light. That’s never going to happen lol. I don’t know what they’re thinking. Maybe it’s kind of my fault too I keep my window open, I hate air conditioning. What does the future hold for the lovely Veronika? Aside from living the dream and traveling the world with my bf. I have some business ideas to help me pay for all this traveling I have planned.

THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT

FL PHOTO: DUCER

[H2O] - Florida could just as easily be called the H2O State instead of the Sunshine State. With over 7,700 lakes, 11,000 miles of rivers and 1,350 miles of coastline, it’s no wonder that water is integrated into almost every fun thing we do here. Surfing, Fishing, and Wakeboarding; whatever your choice, H2O is definitely our most valuable asset.

02.

[PEOPLE] - The south is known for its hospitality and Florida’s people are no different. Our state is truly a melting pot from all corners of the earth and all walks of life. No matter what your interests, from the beaches to the lakes and everything in between, Florida is a place you can call home.

03.

[BOARDSPORTS] - Florida boasts an incredibly rich history in surfing and what we might lack in world class waves we make up for in world surfing domination. With 20 world championship titles (men and women) in the last 30 years, Florida has established itself as THE benchmark in professional surfing competition and our latest crop of young talent is keeping that tradition alive and well. Florida is also widely regarded as the mecca for wake boarding and on any given day you can mix it up with the hottest up and comers of wake as well as former world champs that call Florida home. When it comes to water sports, Floridians dominate!

[FESTIVALS] - There are hundreds of festivals throughout Florida and some our favorite memories come from these events. Food, Music, Fireworks you name it and there is a Florida festival to celebrate it. Its one of our favorite things about this place.

08.

[FOOD] - There is a wide variety of food types here in Florida but the abundance of fresh seafood is our favorite thing. Catching your own dinner, cleaning it, and throwing it on the grill will make you feel like a survival guide and it will probably be one of the best tasting meals you have ever had. For the less adventurous, there is no shortage of fine restaurants serving up all manner of deliciousness.

09.

[GOLFING] - Florida has more golf courses than any other state and it’s one of our favorite things to do when the surf is flat. There are great municipal courses right on up to the TPC at Sawgrass and Bay Hill, where Arnold Palmer hosts his annual tournament. So if you like to watch golf or get out there and swing the sticks, Florida is the place to be.

10.

[FISHING] - We could fill an entire issue with why Florida is the Fishing Capital of the World but suffice to say that more people cast a line here than anywhere else. Whatever you’re looking to catch, chances are we have it here, and there is no better way to spend a lazy summer day than fishing with some of your buddies. For beginners and professionals alike, Florida is a haven for both freshwater and saltwater as well as deep sea fishing. It’s one of the best things about this great state.

[NIGHTLIFE] - What can we say about Florida nightlife, indoor or outdoor, on the beach or in the city, no matter what your flavor, there is always something to keep you going into the night. Dinner, live music, dancing, whatever you’re in the mood for, just head out and you’re sure to find it.

06.

PHOTO: GOLFTALKAMERICA.COM

[ART] - One of our favorite things about Florida is the support for the arts. We have small local programs for kids right on up to world class residency facilities like New Smyrna Beach’s own Atlantic Center for the Arts which have hosted artists such as Edward Albee, John Ashbury, and Allen Gins- burg. The mixture of diversity and culture that abounds in Florida continues to produce art that inspires us.

05.

PHOTO: TUPAT

[MUSIC] - Florida’s musical range is vast, from Tom Petty, Stephen Stills and the Allman Bros, to Iron and Wine, RadicalFace, and Diplo, there is something for everyone. There are dozens of music festivals throughout Florida and you are sure to find something you like from rock to hiphop to punk to bluegrass and beyond. Come on down to Florida you’re sure to find something you like.

FOR SOME SURFERS...LIFE’S NOT ALWAYS A BEACH!

and his wife everything he possibly can to live a good life and make them happy. 2.) I know he wants to win Pipe. He even said himself, “The only thing I’ve really left on the table in my own personal dreams is Pipeline, I would love to win Pipeline, but besides that, I’ve achieved everything I ever dreamed of and then times that by a couple.”I mean, who wouldn’t wanna see CJ Hobgood win Pipeline and go out on top like John Elway or something? That’s what legends are made of.” PHOTO: FRIEDEN/A-FRAME

So where do I start? This question has been on my mind from the time I knew I was gonna sit down with CJ to right now. 40 minutes and 3 weeks later I’m still asking myself the same question,”Where do I start?” So let’s start at the beginning. I’m 38 and he’s 34, so we were 16 and 12... That sounds about right. I was at an NSSA in New Smyrna Beach and I saw this maroon mini van pull up and two twins jump out. My friend was like, “that’s CJ and Damien Hobgood, they’re gnarly”. I’m thinking ok....let’s see. As the day goes on, myself and everyone else that didn’t know was soon aware of the things to come for these two brothers. As multiple events and many years passed it became even more evident that these two were here to stay. At times I questioned their ability but maybe it was just jealousy. We always got along, but they always kept me guessing. Then CJ wins a world title, and I’m thinking to myself “Wow, I was wayyyy off.” So a few years, a few kids, and a lot of ups and downs later, I find myself in Orlando, sitting at CJ Hobgood’s dining room table, wishing I had made it in time for the breakfast that still lingered in the air. I’m about to do my first real interview, and if any of you have ever heard an interview with either of the Hobgoods or had a conversation with them, you know you’re about to hear something a little out of the norm.

time to time, which also showed me the quality of man that he is. As he explained “Judges are human beings just like myself, and yeah I get fired up and wanna say something, but I don’t know what he’s going through in life right now and he’s got a job to do.” Folks that’s called compassion for your fellow man...a rarity if you ask me. And when asked about the groms CJ’s eyes kinda lit up and a smile came over his face almost like he was saying thank you for changing the subject. As he put it, when I asked if he paid attention to the young kids coming up, “Yeah, I do man, I’m a huge fan of surfing, If you’re not a fan of surfing or a fan of anything you do, than you wouldn’t be able to do the job that you do.” He even talked about how guys on tour including eleven time world

Airport, because when I go to the Orlando

airport, on the other side of that is a

PHOTO: RUDDY

So when I asked CJ how he ended up in Orlando he basically said it was “a LOVE thing”. Between him, his wife Courtney, and their three daughters, it just works. I thought his new home break would be Typhoon Lagoon but as he put it, “My home break is Orlando International Airport, because when I go to the Orlando airport, on the other side of that is a sick wave.” It’s answers like this that make CJ so intriguing and interesting to listen to. Most people would never look at the situation quite like that. Which brings me to what really inspired me to do this interview. After losing to Joel Parkinson at Keramas in Bali, CJ gave a post heat interview that I’m sure not only touched me, but any other Father or Mother that was in earshot. CJ basically spoke about the reason why he is who he is, what he does, and why he does it.... FAMILY. After sixteen years on tour, I personally think CJ is still going for two reasons. 1.) His family. He wants to provide for his children and be able to give them

As we touched on the topic of competition I asked CJ about the state of competitive surfing from the grom level all the way up to the CT, and the judging criteria that is involved, which if you pay attention you know he has been somewhat outspoken at times. In what would seem like a ten happy system as of late, I asked CJ how he felt about that and how his relationships with the judges on tour can be from

champion Kelly Slater pay attention and watch the amateur events online because they’re fans of surfing and want to know who the new kids coming up are. Even referencing how top guys like Owen Wright and Dusty Payne used to participate in the Camp Hobgoods and the Hobgood Challenge are now” kicking his butt” at times. So I wonder who feels worse after a loss? I guarantee it’s those guys, because like the story has stated, CJ has been there and done that and he seems pretty content. Now if we can just get that Pipeline victory under his belt. Hopefully, if you already weren’t a fan of CJ Hobgood, what you’ve read in this piece has made you a fan. He’s a top notch human being, an amazing father, a damn good surfer, and a true Florida boy at heart. CJ and I have been friends for a long time, so I only hope I did this article justice. If you want the full experience of an interview with Mr. Clifton James Hobgood and you have 38 minutes to spare, please go to www.thefluidmag.com or check us on Facebook. MUSIC PROFILE

What were you doing one minute before this interview? A minute ago I was being violated by body scanning aliens at MCO. What type of music do you make? Indiepunk ragas for scythe sharpening. Tell us about your early days with Shyster, who were you guys? We were young. Heartache to heartache we stood. We ran with hyenas across barren graveyards. Shyster opened for many and closed on some. Toured, detoured, and played reel fast. But if I dwell on those days too long, I feel like my life is over. And that’s no good, so let’s move on. What was the transition like moving to New York and forming the New Low’s? New York is a suburban emopunk (hipsterfail) wet nightmare. Real unreal. A sparkling abyss. Millions of beautiful immigrants who never saw us play. But I avenged myself by not going to their shows. Better rehearsal space options than Orlando. That’s for damn sure. Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how weird you are? 38 T HEFLUIDMA G. C OM

1. not weird. You’re the one that’s weird. I’m a normalnik. Painfully ordinary diet, hobbies, sexual practice, conversational style. Freakishly unobtrusive. If you guys could be any superheroes, who would you be? Dennis Kucinich. My mom. It’s a toss up. Why do you think only a small percentage of the population makes over $150K? Because like sticks to like. Money gathers on slime and oily shitballs as they roll around smothering the masses that mostly beg for a drop of diarrhea with which they hope to affix their own decay of sustenance. For real, the question is vast, relating in my oversimplified view to the demonizing of socialism, systems so assumed that they’re practically invisible, incessant storytelling extolling the champions of capital, the complete mystification and abstraction of the economic system and pathetic addiction to hollow dreams of luxury. Oh and professional (televised) sports. How does it work out being a school teacher and a musician? It works well. It’s both limiting when I’m teaching and busy as fuck, and quite liberating when I’m on one of my many holidays - including two months in the summer for tour,

etc. Teaching keeps me fed and sheltered so I can not worry about the band’s income, but that fact can also be a demotivater. Mixed bag, but I enjoy both sides of my vocationism. Who and or what inspires your music? I’m inspired by movies, by bands, artists in general, writers. Probably mostly by anxiety and emptiness. Death maybe at the top of the list. What do you think about the music scene in Orlando? Orlando music scene is varied, kinda cliquey, young (most things are young from my vantage point). Generally inspiring if you know where to look. There’s been an upsurge in house shows for example. Where can we see you play next? Our next show is Halloween night at Durty Nellie’s in Gainesville - playing Fest. We’d love to play NSB though as we’re often out there anyway. Invite us! Favorite venue in CFL? I would have to throw in with Will’s Pub. Because of Will and because of Pub. We play there, friends play there, and I generally don’t feel like killing myself in the process.

CANTINA What separates a New Smyrna restaurant from a New Smyrna icon? It would need to be family owned, have a great atmosphere with friendly service and be the type of place that attracts locals and tourists alike. Clancy’s Cantina has all that, and they couldn’t be located at a better location. For over thirty years Clancy’s has been the place you go for an epic Cinco De Mayo, a big Friday night, birthdays, dates, or even a casual night out to enjoy a delicious meal. Basically, it isn’t hard to find a great reason to hit up Clancy’s for a great time.

One sip of the cold Margaritas brings you to an instant state of relaxation. For a little insiders tip, try a frozen margarita with a Chambord floater. It’s absolute perfection. The food is made with only the freshest ingredients and is always on point too - tacos, fajitas, fresh seafood, and homemade desserts. It’s almost guaranteed that when you go in there, you’ll see a familiar face. And if you don’t, Clancy’s Cantina is family owned and operated, and they immediately make you feel like you’re a part of the crew.
