NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Fall Season is hands down one of our favorite times of the year. As kids go back to school and summer is in our rear view, the best has yet to come. Everything comes together making it the perfect time to focus on the outdoor surroundings and activities. Fall is a time of fortune, with long days, cooler weather, and less crowds. As Floridians finally get a break from the humidity and heat, we celebrate the cooler weather by enjoying long days outside and embracing some of the great activities and festivals that our area has to offer. Fall tends to be the peak of our hurricane season as well. Nearly one-third of the hurricanes affect Florida in September, and about three-fourths of the storms affect the state between August and October. It has been so long since we’ve been hit that it almost makes you forget about the disaster that comes with these storms. Wilma was the last time that we faced the full wrath of a hurricane that sadly killed 25 people in 2005. As surfers, we are always looking for the next storm to develop so we can do what many in their right mind would never think to do, “Hurricane Hunt!” For the first few tropical storms that have formed, they’ve had big hype but lacked wave quality and substance. With that being said, it seems like this year is ready to make its mark. Storms are forming one after another off the coast of Africa and it’s looking like this hurricane season could be one for the history books. In this issue we dedicate it to the Fall Season. For better or worse, sunshine to tropical havoc, it doesn’t get any better than these months. Take our tips for embracing this time of year, from hurricane surf essentials to the best seasonal brews, we got you covered in the Fall Issue of Fluid Magazine.

01/ Look both ways. Have some manners and never burn a local. 02/ Timing is everything. Pristine conditions before or after the storm hits, means all the stars aligned. Micheal Dunphy reaping the rewards of perfect timing.

03/ Bring a photographer. It is rare that we get waves of consequence. Make sure you document it! 04/ Here comes the bad news. People can see hurricanes coming for weeks in advance. With that being said, every Tom, Richard, and Harry will be clogging up your line up like it is I-4 at rush hour. 05/ Surf alone. Take the extra incentive to check every nook and cranny. Those who search, are rewarded.

06/ Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Hurricanes come with so many unknowns. Be prepared, and know when to wave the white flag. 07/ Your crew is everything. From early morning excursion to after beer sessions.
09 BIG-WAVE LEASH Strapping up with thicker leash can save you from getting stranded in out in the line-up with a long swim into shore.
08/ Stay tuned at all times. Sometimes you know a week in advance that your are hurricane hunting, and other times you know 2 hours before you pack. 09/ Know when to hold them, and know when to fold them. Getting out at the right time is key. 10/ Keep your eyes on the flags. When that storm hits the sweet spot and the wind turns offshore, getting ready to hunt.

FIND YOUR ISLAND!
A LOOK AT OUR TOP PICKS FOR PLACES TO PADDLE AROUND CENTRAL FLORIDA!
Wekiva River - The Wekiva River begins at Wekiva Springs State Park and runs 16 miles north to the St. John's River. Despite proximity to Orlando and its developed suburbs, the river maintains its pristine natural beauty. However, it is threatened by pollution and utilities extracting water from the aquifer that otherwise would flow to the springs. Rock Springs Run - Rock Springs Run is our favorite paddle run in Central Florida for its beauty and ever-changing diversity. We've seen new channels created, sandbars lost, and other changes over the years. Starting near Apopka, it meanders 9 miles joining the Wekiva River about 6/10 mile below Wekiva State Park. Together, Rock Springs Run and the Wekiva River comprise the Wekiva Paddling Trail. Dora Canal - The Dora Canal links Lake Eustis and Lake Dora, bordered by the towns of Eustis, Tavares and Mount Dora. Although short, the majestic cypress make this one of the most scenic paddling trips in Florida. Several canals off the main channel add to the adventure. Many water birds along the shores, plus alligators and otters are great photography subjects. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge,
established in 1963 as part of the development of Canaveral (John F. Kennedy) Space Center, consists of 140,000 acres including coastal dunes, marshes, scrub, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks that provide habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. Paddling in the Refuge provides an unparalleled view of unspoiled natural habitat and wildlife including an occasional alligator or dolphin. Callalisa Creek at New Smyrna - Launch from Callalisa Park at the intersection of the South Causeway (Third Avenue) and Peninsula Drive and explore meandering Callalisa Creek. This is salt water and the creek winds through salt marsh and mangrove hammock. The creek is tidal. Paddling against the tide can be a workout, and at low tide you may need to pull your paddle board or canoe in some areas. Good for fishing. DeLeon Springs. - DeLeon Spring, pouring out 19 million gallons of water per day, forms the headwaters for Spring Garden Lake and Spring Garden Creek, which flows 10 miles to the St. John's River. Launch at Ponce DeLeon Springs State Park and paddle the four-mile trail along Spring Garden Creek to Lake Woodruff and Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge with its 18,000+ acres of lakes, creeks, and marshes.

Happy Tails Dog Park, Ponce Inlet The quaint town of Ponce Inlet may have killer surf and some killer drinks at Inlet Harbor, but next time you head over the bridge, hit up Happy Tails. The park is sectioned off so little dogs can play without fear and it’s open 7 days a week. Barkley Square, DeLand There will be plenty of room for even the most energetic mutt at this 14 acre park. Let your pup sniff the fresh air and enjoy the Olde Florida terrain. This park is a must for large and small dogs alike.
TOP DOG PARKS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA The leaves are a changing, and it’s the perfect weather to get outside and enjoy Fall with Fido
Photos by: Lucy MacLeish
No, he can't partake in pumpkin spice lattes, but that's no reason to leave your four-legged buddy out of the season. Hit up one of the many dog parks in the area and take in all the season has to offer. Man's best friend will get a chance to chase some tail, and you'll get a chance to chat up some fellow animal lovers. It’s a win, win!
Flagler Beach Grab your leash and then grab his leash to head up to Flagler Beach. The stretch of sand just north of Gamble Rogers State Park to 13th Street South allows leashed dogs. Don't be greedy. You know he loves the beach just as much as you do. Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park, Ormond Don't sit, Don't stay. Head up to Ormond and enjoy the green grass at Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park. There are more than four acres that your dog can enjoy. Enjoy this park in even the hottest days of fall, because there are plenty of shade trees and watering stations. Beck Park Ranch, Osteen All dogs go to heaven and in this case, dog heaven probably looks a lot like Beck Park Ranch. The dog park is a part of a 25 acre oasis that has tons of grass, trees, and fresh air. Smyrna Dunes Park, New Smyrna Sometimes grass just won't cut it. When Fido feels the call of mother ocean, bring him to NSB where he can wade and swim. There is even a station where you can give him a scrub down before he jumps in your ride. Dr. Phillips Dog Park This much-loved fenced dog park includes separate small dog section, water fountains, and shade trees that embrace the Florida lifestyle. Enjoy the lovely views while your little buddies get to stretch their legs at this amazing location. Fleet Peeples Park This location is similar to doggy wonderland. The sandy beach on Lake Baldwin offers dogs a refreshing place to splash and swim for your pup. When they tire of the water, they can follow a number of trails through a wooded area at the end of the park. It is a pet-friendly 23-acre park with plenty of room to roam, Dogs may run off their leash in the fenced area from 8am until dusk.
FALL FE STI VALS In Florida, there isn't a better time of year than fall. It brings cooler temperatures and some of the nation's best fall festivals to our backyard. As we take a break from the heat and humidity of Florida summers, we embrace a variety of festival on offer. Locals and visitors commemorate harvests, enjoy arts and crafts shows, taste the local cuisines, listen to live music, and celebrate Halloween. There is something going on every weekend from September until Thanksgiving, so pack up the family and enjoy the the festivals. You won't want to miss these great events!

Straight Up SolGier Foundation is an active member of the Victims Services Coalition of the 7th Judicial Circuit. This group has members of the State Attorney’s office, all the local Police Departments, Sheriff’s Office, as well as Victim Advocates, and many counselors who handle these victims. The Foundations main purpose is to help these victims survive their abuse whether it was recent or a long time ago. By exploring the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors, learning healthy coping skills, opening yourself up to new perspectives, or creating an atmosphere of trust and safety, we hope to help you rise above your struggles and realize your full potential. The Straight Up SolGier Foundation was started by a friend of ours who experienced sexual abuse at its worst, At age 10,

Matt“Magou” McGuirk testified against his teacher who had been sexually abusing him. He was proud he put his predator in prison but didn’t want to talk about it with anyone after the trial was over. Matt received a life sentence of suffering. He kept his demons inside and turned to drugs to try and erase his feelings and pain. In 2011 he died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 31. He was in and out of rehab and came to realize he finally needed to come to terms with what happened to him as a boy. When he finally started talking about his abuse, others would reassure him of how brave he was as a little boy. He wanted to write a book and tell other victims to talk about their abuse so they didn’t turn to drugs like he did. Matt designed the SolGier logo around the year 2007. He was a spiritual person; he spelled SolGier with a capital “G” for God

EPIC JOBS
ya go. We paddled and towed for about three days straight. It was all time! Just between you and me, how awesome are Latina women? And by "awesome" we mean crazy, hot, and just plain out crazy! Oh man, they are awesomely crazy but that's kinda X rated!
Trin Schloot
Surf Guide at Surfari Charters, Nicaragua There is always that job, that everyone wishes they had. In Trin Schloot's case, his job takes the cake when it comes to dream jobs. Trin is a surf guide in one of the most wave rich spots on the planet!! At Surfari Charters in Nicaragua, life is pretty good to say the least. Most of us save all year to spend one week at Surfari Charters, to experience life at its fullest. For Trin, it is all gravy, all day every day! Sit back and prepare to be super jealous.
Safari charters is known as one of the premiere travel guides around the globe. What has been the most valuable lesson you've learned working with that elite crew? Working with Surfari Charters has been unreal! I really value the friendships I have made; both guests and Surfari crew. I've learned more than anything to value a lifestyle that makes you wake up every morning stoked. Break it down for us. What is an average day like in the life of a surf guide? Well, I get up at 4:30am, it's dark, and the Milky Way is as visible as ever! I take a quick ride on my moto down to camp and prep all the surfing and fishing gear. Not much later, I will go motivate the guests to go shred! Throughout the day I'll shoot some photos, eat some authentic Nicaraguan food, surf and fish a few more times, then watch the sunset. Finally, I end the day at Surfari bar for en epic dinner and a few rum drinks! What's the biggest surf that you've caught living down there? This year that mega swell was about the largest I've seen Outer Reef. The sets were 10 feet and super consistent. Devon Treshor came down for that one. The swell was raw and powerful. Devon charges and was claiming it was super heavy, so there
Were you a little nervous making the move down to Nicaragua? I was in the sense. I'd never been here before, so just driving to local spots the first few months had me white knuckling. Everyone thinks you have the dream job, but be honest with us, do you get sick of it sometimes? It is a dream job for sure! I mean it may sound weird to most people, but sometimes I just need to take a day off from surfing and relax. But that's tough when its always pumping! What do you miss the most about Florida? I miss my family and friends the most. Close behind is Publix, and just cruising down to the inlet to check the surf! What's next for Trin Schloot? And we don't mean a cold Tona or a offshore barrel. What the next step in your life? That is a big step! I'm moving to Oregon in September for the next few years to finish up school and work for an awesome company in the medical marijuana industry! I'm Stoked on the change to a colder environment and a career in that industry has always been a dream!

Words: Travis AJ & Patrick Ruddy Photos: Patrick Ruddy & Courtesy of Schweizer F: Trav & I wanna fire a few questions at you via text for an interview. You down? N: Shoot! F: You just won $10,000.00 in VA last weekend, what are you gonna do with it? N: Haha, well I wanna buy a new car, but I don't think Miss (Mom) is going to let that one happen. So, I'll probably just put it in the bank. F: Think she'll let you buy a boat instead? N: Haha, probably not, because I mainly live in CA now. F: Yeah, you don't need a boat out there! Tell us about CA, how's that transition treating you? N: It's good. I get to surf a lot better waves more often, and I get to work closer with my sponsors & shapers. So it's definitely paying off, so far. F: Well, we're seeing it for sure.. Who's been influencing you out there? N: Well, I live with Cam Richards. We surf together everyday and push each other a lot, so that helps a ton! F: You two seem to end up in heats together a lot too. How does that work out? N: It's actually pretty funny. We always talk about what we do if we have to sit on each other and what not. We actually sit out there and talk a lot and somewhat take turns.
F: So who's got the better record? N: It's hard to be the judge of that, haha. F: Coming off these two events (ECSC & OBX Pro), you got some points on the WSL. Has the plan for this year changed? N: Yeah, definitely. I'm going to try to do a couple of events in Brazil and try to get some more points. I guess I'm right on the edge of making the prime tour. F: Have you been to Brazil? Heard the place is crazy! You ready for that? N: Haha, yeah hopefully. I got a good squad with me. F: Good crew is key! You been doing anything differently recently far as diet & exercise? N: Nah, just been sticking to the same old thing. I like to eat heathy when I can, but it gets expensive. F: So we gotta know, how'd you meet Miley? N: Haha, my buddy is good friends with her and she invited us to come over one night. She’s really rad, and we all hung out a bunch. F: Sounds casual, do you get star struck ever? N: Sometimes I'll just realize what's going on and
get a little shocked. But, it's usually pretty casual, and she’s now just one of our good friends. F: It's good to have good friends! So what's up next for Noah Schweizer? N: Well, I guess I'm going to do those events in Brazil and other then that, I'll be back out in CA. I really wanna do a surf trip! F: Sounds good! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this with us. Any last shout outs? N: No worries boys! Hi Momma!

FISHING OUTLOOK Inshore/offshore The months of September and October will gradually bring Central Florida cooler air with cold fronts approaching from the North. With this, the waters of our fisheries will cool down a bit and give us a change from all the hot summer heat! You can expect higher winds as the cold fronts are coming down in weekly or monthly waves. Although this is somewhat of a disadvantage for fisherman, the bites will become much more aggressive and constant throughout the fall days. Regardless of what you may believe (and depending on the temperature), many anglers will not necessarily have to wake up in the early hours of the day to get on the bite. Which is great news for you anglers that love your sleep! Last year I noticed that the first few days that showed us cooler water temperatures, the trout game turned on! Now, we were catching trout that were on the medium to smaller size scale cast after cast, but you can find the larger 26-30 inchers cruising around looking for a mullet or croaker to munch on… For you fly fishermen just starting out, try using some slider flies if you’re looking to hook up on a trout (olive colors prove to work well). The Ponce Inlet Jetty has been holding an abundance of mangrove snapper, which can make a mighty fine meal…FISH TACOS! Try throwing some cut up pinfish or mullet down into the rocks and see what you can find. Just be wary of how much lead you put on your line because snags will certainly be no stranger to the common angler. Use enough lead to get your line to the bottom. If you’re fishing the Jetty now, you will be able to get on some upper to over-slot redfish while the spawn comes into full swing. This also brings to mind that the fall mullet run is right around the corner! If you want to see some great action, head out to the beach and see if you can find schools of mullet swimming the shore! Lastly for the courageous angler, there will be quite a show of tarpon rolling off the beaches. If you have a yak, SUP, or boat, now is one of the best times to get a poon on the end of your line. Try free-lining some mullet and see what you can come up with!
