FROM OUR 'GUEST' EDITORS Eros Exarhou

Alicya Hollingsworth Simmons

Note to Readers: One thing to my readers, all I can say, is travel and get out of your comfort zone as much as you can, even if it's a short drive in your town. Experiencing things around the world is something special. It will help you grow your mind and soul. Live your life to the fullest and never look back. Don't listen to the negativity going on around the world. There's a lot of love out there! Also, I just wanted to say thank you to Fluid for the opportunity. You guys are legends!!! Yewww!

Note to Readers: If I could stress on one thing to the readers of Fluid, it would definitely be to travel. I've found in my short 18 years of existence that it has helped further my mindset, not only towards tricky situations I have faced, but also life in general. New Smyrna Beach is a great place to have as a base but leaving a small town and creating more exposure for yourself opens up new doors and perspective for the rest of your life. Knowing that NSB will always be there for you when you get back makes traveling all more worthwhile, as well.

Hometown: Ormond Beach Age: 21 Occupation: Soul Searcher Motto: Love is the answer Future Plans: I always keep surfing in my blood and hope to produce content for surfing for as long as I can. Lately, I've been getting serious into blogging, using my Instagram and such. I also just did my first movie, so I'm going to try and get into acting and take it further in my career (I love being behind and in front of the camera). So, just playing the field a bit!

Hometown: New Smyrna Beach Age: 18 Occupation: Student at UNCW Motto: Better than yesterday Future Plans: I see myself studying at Oxford University in the UK, while living in a winsome home and taking leaves for traveling all over the world. My desire is to work for a government agency and help create opportunities for others. Coffee has been my all around go-to to help me accomplish these goals and I wouldn't mind opening up a roastery to go along with this persona.

Bobby Levy Note to Readers: Growing up here in New Smyrna Beach has been absolutely amazing. I couldn’t think of a better place to have been raised, and I can’t thank my family enough for that. It is such a tight knit community and, on top of that, an epic surf town with fun waves almost every day of the year. It’s just one of those places that has a feel-good vibe all year round, and that’s just one of the reasons that our town is so unique and special. If there is one thing that I could recommend to the readers of Fluid, it would be to never be afraid to try new things, and always embrace what you are passionate about whether it is surfing, music, art, or whatever you are interested in. And never forget to always be present and enjoy every minute of life! Thanks to Bryan, Patrick, and the whole Fluid crew for presenting this amazing opportunity to be a part of this issue. You guys are epic!

Hometown: New Smyrna Beach Age: 17 Occupation: Student / Surf Shop Employee Motto: Always Live in the Moment, and never be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone! Future Plans: I plan on attending a university and finding a career path that I will enjoy as well as allow me to travel and enjoy everything that life has to offer. Hopefully, I’ll score some good waves along the way.

MISS SUNSHINE

FAITH IRVING 18 YRS | PATRICK RUDDY Where do you live? New Smyrna Beach Where would your dream trip take you? My dream trip would definitely be flying to Greece. The views are absolutely amazing from what I've seen. Plus, I've never really been out of the country. How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) I use social media quite a bit. I mostly use instagram and snapchat. Every once in awhile I’ll get on twitter or facebook to check out what I've missed and then leave. How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as unique. I like to style most of my clothes myself. I enjoy fashion, standing out, and making my clothes different from everyone else. Where do you generally shop? Most of my clothes are from thrift stores or Moxie Vintage in Daytona Beach. I'm not a big mall type shopper. What is fun and rewarding about modeling? Modeling for me is fun because I love doing it. I get to travel, meet new faces, and run into super rad opportunities. I'm always cracking jokes and making funny faces for the camera. I like putting personality into my pictures, that way people can see the type of person I am. Mid laughing pictures are my specialty. Doing something you love is the best feeling ever. It feels good when sharing my work with others and getting positive feed back. I’ve always wanted to do something different with my life and create a name for myself. Got a boyfriend? No boyfriend, I’d much rather have a puppy, or maybe like one of those huge, fluffy, bear size dogs to cuddle with. I love Fluid magazine because ? I love Fluid Magazine because, I like to keep tabs on our local surfer boys, haha. Fluid shares different articles on young upcoming entrepreneurs in the business who started locally, and it inspires more who are trying to do the same thing. I enjoy seeing all the phenomenal photos you guys take. I really am amazed by the work they create. What does the future hold for the lovely Faith? I plan on taking a few modeling opportunities, see where it takes me, and saving everything in the process for Fashion school. I would like to get a degree in Design and hopefully one day have my very own clothing line. I'm kind of just chasing dreams and hoping I catch them. Sponsored by:

SOCIAL MEDIA & DATING 101 WITH ALICYA SIMMONS

Damn, why do so many people care about likes? We have Instagram, twitter, and Facebook incorporated with our daily routines so much that sometimes we don’t even follow through with our daily routines. We have condescending follows from maybe your ex’s new girlfriend or your current relationships ex. That makes it pretty hard huh? We also have relationships evolving strictly from social media, and what nurtured relationship could you start with just a simple attraction? It’s become less emotional and physical appearance has become more prominent from social media. We have people cat fishing others so much that there is a TV show of just situations. There is some sort of stigma that comes along with relationships and social media and that being solely off attraction, or at least that’s the stigma. Being 18 in today’s age with the amount of technology that is prevalent has gotten kind of hard. The anxiety, the self-esteem, and trust has changed drastically just in the past decade. Should we condemn social media then? No, because of course just like everything else, it has good to it (i.e. helped long distance relationships and started new friendships). Let’s take a look into the past with our parents. There was probably not a lot of

16

jealousy that was apparent due to the fact they had no ability to like another girls picture of her butt or a guy’s selfie. They didn’t have apps that were strictly affiliated with trying to start relationships, more so they didn’t have apps at all. Working on their confidence was a huge factor for them because they didn’t have a Facebook or Instagram to boost or deplete any selfesteem. So what do we do? How do we solve a reoccurring problem that faces our generation? Will we surpass this era of “who gets the most likes is the most popular”? Dating becomes difficult at this point, to where-as face to face interactions become less and less as we become more involved with social media. My advice for all who have been having trouble with finding someone: put away the phone and start going places alone, because being alone is OK. It creates new opportunities that you wouldn’t normally run into when so objectified to a phone or with someone you already know. It allows you to find yourself and your interests. Allowing yourself to have time to put away the phone and do what you truly like helps stop the anxiety of who posted what and when. And you never know, you might run into your next significant other.!

DAY IN THE LIFE OF BOBBY LEVY PHOTOS: Patrick Ruddy

10:30 am : My favorite thing about growing up in New Smyrna Beach is being able to have such a consistently fun wave right in my backyard. I have made so many amazing friends surfing the inlet, and it’s always a good time whether the waves are 2 feet or 6 feet. It’s like a second home to me. Everyone is always looking out for you down there and getting to watch my friends progress really pushes my surfing. Plus, with Patrick and all of the other great photographers in and out of the water at the inlet, the level of surfing can only be elevated. Our amazing photogs are always keeping us stoked.

8:45 am : Here’s a pretty classic photo to start off with. I don’t think there could be any photo to describe my morning routine better than this shot. My morning usually begins with a quick surf check via the inlet cam, a cup of coffee, and a short walk down to the beach to see if it’s really worth a paddle out. Pictured here is my younger family member, Sunshine, who usually likes to keep me company for breakfast whenever I’m at home.

12:15 pm : There are so many good places to grab a bite to eat around New Smyrna. This particular spot, Café Verde, is my favorite place to go after a surf, and the staff and chefs are second to none.

9:15 am : If the surf looks even the slightest bit fun, you can usually find me down at the inlet with my friends. On this particular day, it was pretty flat so I decided to bring out an Alaia, which I hand shaped a few years ago. I have really been intrigued by alternative surf crafts lately and building things such as this Alaia along with a few handplanes. They have been a huge influence on my surfing over the past few years. I love being able to keep things interesting out in the water and trying new boards and designs. It’s a really good way to experiment and experience the many diverse feelings that surfing has to offer.

2:00 pm : Most days during summer you can find me working or hanging out with the crew at Red Dog Surf Shop. The employees / managers are some of my best friends, and it’s one of the towns coolest surf shops. I have had some of my best times with the Red Dog crew, and all of my co-workers are like family. If you are ever in town and need a board, come stop by!

6:30 pm : This is my favorite photo of the bunch. Over the past two years, I have fallen in love with working on and riding vintage motorcycles. Thanks to my incredibly talented friends Garrett Coppola (Grease City Cycles) and Joey Terman (B & D Customs, Inc), I have been able to apprentice with them. They have taught me so much about what goes into building and maintaining a 40 year old machine. Pictured here is Garrett’s Garage, where I have spent many an afternoon tinkering with my bike and learning all about the trade. Working with vintage bikes has really given me a great appreciation for a time where simplicity and authenticity were the foremost concern. It’s really one of those things that just keeps me super stoked and always ready to learn something new. If you want to check out Garrett and Joey’s work, their instagrams are @grease_city_cycles and @bigdixie_customs

SOCIAL STRONG

When and why did you start to gain a huge following on Instagram? Well I’ve always had a thing for photography, but it all kinda started with a couple friends 3 years ago or so. My friend Jay Alvarrez came to California, stayed with me, and we did some work together. Since then I have been pursuing what I love to do.

WITH EROS EXARHOU

Which photos tend to get the most likes? Well it all depends on the time I post really. Mostly my selfies get the most likes, but I love to post the things I enjoy; nature, surfing, and my experiences. What are some trends you've seen in the last year with social media? A lot of people are blogging with brands. Collabs are the thing right now. I'm slowly getting into it. I'm a bit selective with brands that want to work together, but I love working with brands that suit me and what I like to do. How important is a social media following to your current sponsors and potential future sponsors? Ya, that's mostly what they care about at the moment. The following I can bring to the brands and the product I can sell. I'm growing slowly so that helps a lot. What negatives do you see with Instagram and other social media outlets? A lot of people live for it. I see a lot of people revolving their world around it. It seems like you can't even have a normal conversation with people without them being on their phone snap chatting everything or tuned into insta. Also, there's a lot of groupies now. It seems like you can't have friends if you don't have a certain following, somewhat superficial. Same goes for chicks. They all want to know your following, haha. We see you post things like, "in Bali, let's meet up." What is the best connection you've made for this style post? I mean it all depends. Brands in the area will contact you or other influencers will want to do some work together and meet up. Any projects on the horizon in regards to your social media following? I play it day by day‌ I'm currently on a yacht in the Adriatic Sea off Croatia with other social influencers for a brand. Any last words? Be real, be true to yourself, learn to love, take chances, and never give up!

DAKINE AD

DESIGN LAB EVAN GEISELMAN & TODD JANDA

In this issue we sit down with pro surfer Evan Geiselman and the product manager for surf hardgoods at Dakine, Todd Janda, to find out what goes into designing his signature traction pad, from start to finish. Dakine's main ethos for all the products they make is, "is it the best possible design/ product we can offer for a given purpose? Working with their athletes ensures that they are making the best surf products available. The process of designing and producing each riders signature pad has a lot more into it than a lot of people think. From the durameter, hardness/softness of the materials, to the height of the arch and kick, every pad is custom tailored to that riders foot. With Evan, Dakine looked at making sure that the arch fits perfectly into the arch of his foot. That in conjunction with the tail kick placement, angle and height gives Evan a "hot button" that lets him lock his foot to surf like all of us dream we could. Evan Geiselman's feedback on working with the team at Dakine: "Dakine has been open to any idea I throw at them. They always come up with products that

I never have to second guess! On this new pad, we made some little tweaks with the kick of the pad and the softness of the grip along with a new design. Todd is really on it, and I can't wait for it to come out!" Janda's response in regards to his contribution as Product Manager for surf hardgoods at Dakine: "Working with all our athletes is one of the best parts of my job. From Bruce Irons, Joel Parkinson, Albee Layer and Evan. It's rad to get their feedback on what they need for surf Gear. It's especially rewarding to be able to work with Evan because he's a New Smyrna Beach native, and if I can help him get what he needs to do his job better, then that is something I would take great pride in. It's also fun to get feedback from the riders in terms of color and art. It really gives us a snapshot of their head space at that point in time. The challenge is always balancing pro surfers needs against the average guy. Luckily with tail pads, leashes and board bags, what works for Evan nearly always works for the everyday surfer. To make products that help our athletes surf better, while enhance everyday surfers enjoyment, is the best job I could ever dream of.

YOUNG BUSINESS MINDS In this issue we feature three young entrepreneurs based in Central Florida. As we dig into their profiles, one factor remains constant. It was their ambitions for starting each concept. It boiled down to supply and demand. They were in search of a product or service, they weren’t satisfied with the alternatives that were available, so they said screw it and created something amazing. These innovators are young, motivated, and the next big names to keep an eye on. Better yet, support them instead of just keeping an eye on them! Let’s learn a little more about what keeps these young business minds progressing.

How many boards do you build a year? I build anywhere from 80-120 boards a year.

Board Theory Surfboards

What is the process from start to finish, and do you complete each step? Before I begin building a custom board, I start by talking with the surfer about what they want in the board. Hand shaping comes next, then glassing, and finally sanding the board for the finished product. I do every part of the process in house, at my shop in Holly Hill, from start to finish by hand.

Brayden Brown

Based in: Daytona Beach, FL We've heard about Brayden Brown and his company, Board Theory Surfboards, for quite some time. Being the youth issue, the timing couldn't have been better to dig deeper and see what has motivated Brayden to start a business from such a young age. Brown shaped his first board at 13 years old! The only explanation would be that his family comes from a long line of surfers and the tradition was passed from each generation. Although, that is the most logical explanation, that is far from the truth. Let's hear more about where Brayden found his inspiration. Why did you decide it was a good idea to shape your first board at the ripe age of 13 years old? I decided to build boards because I couldn't find anything that I wanted out there, and I was in need of a new board at the time. Being the only and first surfer in the family it was an odd thing to do or even think about building a surfboard. Once I built that first one, I've been hooked on

building boards and don't plan on getting away from it anytime soon. I know you've been influenced from your grandpa and his impact on the racing industry, could you please elaborate? My grandpa, Smokey Yunick, thought outside the box. He wouldn't let people tell him it wouldn't work, he made it work. He invented numerous things and is credited for doing things that changed racing and the automobile. I'm the same way with my shapes. If I have a crazy idea, I go for it and make it work. We live in Florida and the waves aren't the best, so your quiver needs to be on point. I try and do that, building the best board for our waves, no matter how odd it might look, and you'll see them ripping in the line up.

Where can people find out more about Board Theory Surfboards? You can find out more about my boards @ Boardtheory on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter as well as my website; Boardtheory.com. Also I welcome visitors to my shop anytime to check it out and talk boards. You can also check some of my inventory at the Salty Dog stores on Granada or International Speedway Blvd in Daytona and at the AnotherRide surf shop in Satellite Beach. Any last words or shout outs? Thank you to the support I've had from my family, good friends, and my beautiful girl friend who puts up with my work habits and surfing. I love you! Thanks to all the surfers that ride my stuff and all the ones that will! #supportyourlocalhandshaper

After Body Meals Kirk Girdley

Based in: New Smyrna Beach, FL For founder of After Body Meals, Kirk Girdley, it all started with personal ambitions. A few years back, Kirk was following his passion and studying fitness and personal training. Along with his drive for helping others, he wanted to focus on his own health. He started prepping his own meals and posting them on his personal Facebook page. The meals were not only delicious, but they were also portable and easy to grab on the go, meaning there were no excuses for not eating healthy! Friends started to take notice, and soon, he was signing up more and more clients and focusing on turning his passion into a full time business. Word of mouth continued to grow the business as his clients’ bodies were transformed by consistently eating clean, healthy, and delicious meals that are delivered right to their door. The meals have a variety of great options such as fresh salmon burgers with coconut rice and steamed veggies or the grilled honey srircha glazed chicken with roasted sweet potato fries and sauteed asparagus. Let’s hear more about how Kirk continues to grow his concept. How exactly does the service work? The goal is to make healthy food more accessible, so we provide fully cooked, appropriately portioned meals, delivered right to clients’ doors. The meals are prepped and cooked the same days they’re delivered, which is twice weekly so they stay fresh.

Which areas is After Body Meals servicing? After Body Meals currently services the majority of Volusia County, including New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange, Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, DeLand, and Deltona. We also deliver to some Orlando locations. Does the menu change weekly? The menu does change every week. Collaborative inspiration from our chefs ensures each week’s menu includes creative dishes and varied proteins, sides, and vegetables. It’s typically released each Friday for clients to order for delivery the following week.

Has owning your own business changed your lifestyle dramatically? Yes, there is nothing like owning your own business and working with local small businesses to help each other, cross promote and be successful. What sets your service apart from some of the other on the go options available like shakes or protein bars? Protein shakes and supplements are great once a day, but nothing compares to eating a nutrient dense, balanced meal.

Are there any options for picky eaters or those with special diets? While our menu is a set menu, we try to accommodate to all clients. Upon ordering, clients are able to notify our team of any food allergies or dislikes they may have, which we then replace with another food item. We currently have a Paleo plan, and we’re working on expanding to include vegetarian and pescatarian plans as well. Tell us about some of the goals of your clients? Are they focused on weight loss or is this service for anyone? Our clients’ goals range from everything to weight loss and weight maintenance to weight gain. We offer a standard fit plan, which is recommended for weight loss and maintenance, and an athlete plan, which consists of larger portions. Many of our clients simply don’t have the time or ability to cook healthy options throughout the week. As a young entrepreneur, what goals have you set for yourself? My goal is to franchise After Body Meals all the way to the West Coast and have each of our locations focus on keeping our local customers happy. Any last words or shout outs? Shout to my amazing team of cooks, Denise Rendell who has been there since day one, our delivery drivers, Emily Linton on managing the routes and tracking everyone's allergies and customizations!! Ice Cream Donut Sandwiches BROUGHT TO YOU BY NSB BITES PHOTOS: JESSICA BICKMEYER

Just because summer is over, doesn't mean that the fun has to end! Instead of saying goodbye to frozen sweet treats, say hello to these new delicious ice cream donut sandwiches! To create an insane stack like this, simply buy a dozen assorted donuts, two types of ice cream, and a sample pack of kids cereal. Gently cut the donuts in half, fill them with a few scoops of ice cream, and roll the sides in cereal. Pop the sandwiches back in the freezer for at least an hour before serving and then enjoy! Want to get more creative than that? Try adding more of your childhood favorites like a smear of peanut butter and jelly, a couple sour gummies, or a sprinkle pop rocks for an unexpected pop of fun! The inlet, it alone has been the most influential feature of this town. If you can go back 40 years what advice would you give yourself? To think outside the box regarding surfboard design, and look to nature for better designs for fins and boards.
