EDITOR'S NOTE
END OF SUMMER As we head towards the end of summer, I can’t say that I am sad to see us easing towards fall in Florida. While summer has so many great attributes, it can beat you down at the same time. The cruel combination of getting older and the constant influx of our beach towns busting at the seams has made me grumpy at times and short fused! Instead of dwelling on all the things that are completely out of my control, my best option is to focus on all the season that is upon us. Fall in Florida is, hands down, one of our favorite times of the year. As kids go back to school and summer is in our rear view, the best has yet to come. Everything comes together making it the perfect time to focus on the outdoor surroundings and activities. Fall is a time of fortune, with long days, cooler weather, and less crowds. As Floridians finally get a break from the humidity and heat, we celebrate the cooler weather by enjoying long days outside and embracing some of the great activities and festivals that our area has to offer. Fall tends to be the peak of our hurricane season as well. Nearly one-third of the hurricanes affect Florida in September and about three-fourths of the storms affect the state between August and October. Last year we had a little wakeup call when Matthew rolled through late season. It’s the first time that I’ve ever heard people say, “they will never stay for a storm ever again!” In comparison to what Texas just experienced, and when Hurricane Wilma drilled Florida in 2005, Matthew damage wasn’t quite as detrimental. Although it was the magnitude of those storms mentioned, it was still enough to be an eye opener for the desperados who are looking to ride it out. As surfers, it’s in our DNA to look for the next storm to develop, so we can do what many in their right mind would never think to do, “Hurricane Hunt!” For the first few tropical storms that have formed, they’ve had big hype but lacked wave quality and substance. With that being said, it seems like it is only a matter of time before another storm bashes the coastline. Storms are forming one after another off the coast of Africa and it’s looking like this hurricane season could be one for the history books. Let’s just hope the storm gods are good to us and only send nice swells to the coastline, instead of devastating weather. For better or worse, sunshine to tropical havoc, it doesn’t get any better than these months. Stay safe my friends, and if a beast of a storm is chugging up the coast, get the hell out of dodge! (As this issue was going to print we were preparing for Mega Storm Hurricane Irma. Praying all our family and friends are safe it blows through the entire state.) Bryan Forand | Editor

CORINNE DESTEFANO 23 YEARS
Where do you live? DeLand, Florida Originally from? New Smyrna Beach, Florida Occupation? I currently bartend and serve at Merks Bar & Grill. Where would your dream trip take you? There are so many places I’d like to go but traveling throughout Italy is at the top of the list. I’m Italian myself and I love the history. Tell us something about you that might surprise us. I have been a committed vegetarian for almost five years! How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) It honestly depends on the day. Some days I can only briefly check it a few times and others I spend an embarrassing amount of hours. If you were a skittle, what color would you be and why? Yellow skittles are underrated. Real House Wife's or Sunday Night Football? Football, I love the pizza parties my dad throws any time the Patriots are playing. Got a boyfriend? Lol, it’s complicated? Worst Pickup Line? Is that a mirror in your pocket? Cause I can see myself in your pants. Most important thing on a first date? Natural flowing conversation and genuine laughs. It’s probably important that someone responds well to my goofy awkwardness too. If you had to live in another state besides Florida, which state would you choose and why? I would choose New York City in a heart beat, you never run out of fun new things to do and there is really nothing else like it! Best Beach in Florida? I may be biased here but… New Smyrna is the best. Favorite celebrity? Audrey Hepburn. Beautiful inside and out! Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? I’m usually drawn to guys with some kind of artistic ability. I love Fluid magazine because? It’s local and hip, it keeps our community involved, and I love to see familiar faces throughout. What does the future hold for the lovely Corinne? Hopefully helping animals in some way, having as many adventures as possible, and gaining knowledge as I go!

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT
BEHIND THE LENS
Photographer:
JASON OBENAUER Lives in: New Smyrna Beach Shooting since: 2012 Age: 47 @Surfsupwolf
Hi Jason, where and when was the last image you captured? 9/8/17, The first signs of Hurricane Irma at the inlet. What's a normal day in your life look like? Im up about 4:30-5:00am, coffee on, weather on in the background, then at the computer working on post processing of photos from the past few days. About 40 minutes before sunrise, I check to see what first light looks like out on my back porch. If there is not too many thick clouds, grab the camera with a couple lenses and pick a spot to capture sunrise. I already have my favorites picked out. Then back to the computer till about 7:30-8:30am. If I don’t have any planned shoots, it is off to NSB Inlet to shoot surfing. I check one or more of my 7 different apps on my phone to track storms, on and offshore, to follow swells and thunderstorms. Give us a little background on how you got into photography. As a hoppy, on and off, for years until I injured my neck as a carpenter and had to find a new career. A friend of mine who was into surf photography saw some of my shots and suggested I get some better equipment and he would work with me. That’s when I decided to take a chance and turn my passion into a career. What inspires you? Everything Mother Nature. She challenges you, but gives you so many different canvases to work from.
Where is your favorite place to shoot? Anywhere In nature but mostly near a beach. How does shooting in the New Smyrna Beach area vary from shooting up north in Jersey? Definitely the storms down here you get much more photogenic storms. Also, there are much more variety of wildlife down here, and last the talent at the inlet. When everyone is in town, it’s a surf photographers’ dream. Are you full of energy or what? Seems like you never miss a sunrise or opportunity to capture a storm passing through. I do miss plenty but learned a long time ago that there will always be another. That is the beauty of mother nature. Are you currently working on any new projects? A New Smyrna Beach Coffee Table Picture Book. Do you have a few tips for aspiring photographers? Shoot what you love and develop your own style and ask questions. Never stop learning.
Any Last words or shout outs? My 3 biggest supporters since I have moved here to Florida and could not have made the impact I have would be Red Dog Surf Shop, NSBInlet and you guys at Fluid Magazine. Thank you all for your support.

LOCAL MUSIC PROFILE
FLUID SOUNDS: MUSICAL CHARIS Photo: KYLEMONK.COM
Where are you based out of? We are currently based out of Daytona Beach, FL . Originally from? The band was formed in Sacramento, CA in 2008. How did Musical Charis get its' start and get to where it is today? We started the band back in 2008 with the idea of creating a musical project that was focused on creating fun, positive experience with a foundation of solid, tasteful songwriting. Around the same time that we started the musical group, we also opened a music school for children and adults of all ages as a way to give back to the community and share our talents with others. We always wanted Musical Charis to be more than just a band. We wanted it to be an experience. Since then, we have released 7 albums on JMB Records, toured nationally playing hundreds of shows per year, and worked with countless music students, some of which have gone on to become performers and songwriters in their own right. In 2015 we relocated the band to the East Coast where we continue to teach music lessons, play upwards of 20 shows/month, tour
regionally, and have written and released new material including my solo album "The Deep and the Sea". How did you come up with the band's name? Originally we came up with the name "Musical Chairs" like the game because we always rotated instruments from song to song between members. Then we found that if we switched the I and the R in Chairs that it becomes Charis, which is a Greek word for "Gift" or “Grace". It's the same root word for “Charity”. So, the band name literally means "Musical Gifts”, which coincides with our message of spreading love, peace, and music. How long have you all been singing and playing instruments? List band members and instruments? My husband, Blake and I co-founded the band and we have a rotating cast of characters who perform with us. We've never had a strict policy on who is officially "in the band”. We think of it as a revolving door where depending on each individual's' availability, interest, & musical offering players fill in the gaps where needed. Also, depending on the type of show we play, you could see us perform as an acoustic duo at a restaurant or as a full 10 piece band at a traditional music venue. We switch things up based on what's appropriate to each venue.
Do you play music full time or have side jobs? We pretty much play music full time, upwards of 20 shows per month. We do have our sidehustles though, mostly music related. Booking and graphic design for other artists, writing jingles for commercials, etc. Who's your favorite local band (besides your own of course)? We have a lot of love and respect for lots of local bands and artists, especially those hardworking groups who are putting out their original music like our long-time friends Ramona Quimby, who just released their debut self-titled album. We also love the hustle and fun live performances by bands like Summerlong and Brothers Within. It's great to see the emerging community of musicians showcasing their original tunes. Where will you and the band be 5 years from now? The game plan has always been to keep writing, releasing and performing good music. I see us continuing down that path. If you had to describe your music in less than five words... Fun, uplifting, evolving, ear-candy What do you think your "greatest opportunity" has been thus far in your music career? I wouldn't say there is one single "greatest opportunity" that we can pinpoint to the success of our band, but the overall life experiences we've gained from spending so much time out on the road really became the glue and the backbone of the solid foundation we have as a creative, working band. We live by the motto "work hard, play harder”.

FLUID TRAVEL
EL SALVADOR Photos: SETH STAFFORD / WATTS
The average traveler may not have El Salvador at the top of the bucket list come vacation time. The country suffers horribly from bad press, and it’s hard to stray from the reputation it has received. As we all know, gang violence still dominates international headlines and tends to keep so many adventurous travelers searching for alternative destinations. The vast majority of this beautiful country remains untouched by what the media portrays. El Salvador is a beautiful country, full of world-class waves and kind, welcoming people.
While it isn’t without political problems and trouble between its two leading gangs, it is relatively safe for surfing and vacationing around the country. It boasts mind-boggling diversity, consisting of mountains to the clouds, lush forests and fuming volcanoes, charming colonial towns and broad green valleys, to black-sand beaches. El Salvador is also a land that has suffered through a bloody civil war. Despite all these trials, Salvadorans possess a wonderfully disarming friendliness and hospitality towards visitors.

Transportation In recent years, Spirit Airlines has commenced a service from the states to El Salvador. Prior to that, El Salvador was easy to overlook, partly because the limited number of flights, and also it was more expensive to get to than anywhere else. As we tell you about the option of Spirit Airlines, please keep in mind that they are a budget airline and you really never know what you are going to get. It can come with some unexpected surprises such as lost luggage and constantly delayed flights. Once you finally arrive in El Salvador, the majority of travelers will have their transfer from the airport to the hotel in place. All the resorts have it super dialed in when it comes to getting you to and from your destination. We recommend sticking with the guides that are offered by the accommodations that you choose, but there is always the option of a rental car. For the most part, the roads are generally quite well maintained, but you will need to constantly pay attention to avoid all the varying road hazards(livestock, pedestrians, potholes, crazy drivers, etc).
History El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America after Belize. Although it’s small in stature, it packs a huge punch when it comes to the quality of good people that occupy the country. Like much of Central America, the history of El Salvador has been characterized by economic inequality. In the late 19th century, coffee became the main cash crop for El Salvador, bringing in just shy of 100% of the country's income. However, like so many instances, the rich get richer, and the poor remain poor. The income was restricted to only 2% of the population, sharply dividing the people between a small group of powerful elite and the rest of the country. We all are well aware of the full-fledged civil war that lasted for more than 12 years, and saw extreme violence from both sides(between the military-led government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martà National Liberation Front). Since then, the flood gates have been open for tourists, allowing us to focus on all the resources and beauty that El Salvador has to offer, instead of dwelling on the history and all that the citizens of El Salvador have endured in the past. We highly recommend that you add El Salvador to your itinerary and continue to assist in the progress of an amazing country.
Seasons Most consider Spring as the glory season. It’s the tail end of the dry season and it's not too rainy, but it's a bit cooler and the arrival of the first south swells of the year see the points fire on all cylinders. Late March/early April is the sweet spot according to frequent travelers. Summer is both the wet season and when the biggest surf arrives from the Southern Hemisphere. It is our favorite time of year to visit the country. Although it can be plagued with extremely raining weather, it’s also the time of year when you are almost guaranteed surf. It’s ok to tolerate rain on a trip, but no surf can get annoying quick! Fall oversees the end of the rainy season and much of the south swell activity. It can be primetime to get down there, because most of the crowd is back at school or work for the remainder of the year. Winter is the dry season, which comes accompanied by higher temperatures and smaller, lessconsistent surf. Not typically the time of year people choose to travel to El Salvador, but with that being said, some of the locals claim this is the primetime of year. With less travelers there this time of year, you can be blessed with uncrowded surf if a swell happens to hit.
What to Expect The days in El Salvador start early and end early. One of the best ways to stay out of trouble, is to stick to the routine of waking up at dawn and passing out right after the sun goes down. Any unfortunate stories I’ve heard of, tends to take place in the late night hours when the booze is flowing steady…surprise surprise. In regards to the surf, it is easy to wear yourself out. With pulsing southern hemisphere swells and long paddles up the point, El Salvador will whip you into shape quick. The past couple trips down it has gotten more crowded, word is spreading to say the least. The biggest annoyance in most cases are the Brazilian crowds. Don’t get us wrong, we have many dear friends that are Brazzos, but when you pull up to a break and there is a group of any nationality that comes in packs of 20’s, it gets annoying really quick. The best advice is to try and surf at times when others don’t find it quite as appealing. Get out there at the crack of dawn, and make sure to keep an eye on it throughout the heat of the day when everyone is taking a siesta. Sponsored by:

1. Purple Pill 9’10 x 18 x 23 x 17 x 3 Peninsula Holding Co. Designed by Trey Edwards and glassed and finished by yours truly. It’s a thinned out, foiled out version of the Tudor. A bit radder version. It’s my day to day classic log. For anything clean under chest high and lined up.

2. Standard Plank 10 x 18 x 23 x 17 x 3 Tudor "Nuuhiwa Noserider" by Bill Shrosebe My "Holy Grail". I ordered this board custom in 2000, My high school graduation gift, and have consistently ridden it ever since. Glassed with 8 oz Volan, built to last, true to the 1966 design it’s modeled after. Every log I have loved has been ripped of this babe. It rides as good as the day I got it. Its a Cadillac towing a houseboat compared to your average shortboard sports car, it’s just my speed. 3. Original Twin-fin 5'11" x 19 1/2" x 2 3/4" This board was hand shaped in 1981 by Terry S. Goldsmith. It's an original twin fin with the Star Fin System, which, if needed, are hard to find and expensive.

4. The Ugly One 4’6 x 19 3/4 x 22 1/2 x 19 x 2 It’s a self shape foam stripped from a broken in half longboard, glass on handmade side finners, and glassed with leftover epoxy boat resin. This thing was haphazardly built from leftover materials but has given me so many great times. Im 6'2, 200lbs 5. Two-Tone 9'5 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 22 1/2 x 15 3/4 x 2 7/8 This is hand crafted by Trey Edwards, made out of Paulownia. 6. Pocket Knife 6’4 x 16 x 21 1/4 x 15 x 2 1/8 Darren Handley Designs, aka the triple dipper. I walked into Daytona Board Store and bought my first board off the rack in 7 years. I couldn't find a problem with this board, still can’t. I love it when the surf bumps up. From my perspective, it’s a hot rod, and we connect. My only consistently ridden thruster. 7. Squaty Stump 5 x 18 x 21 x 17 x 2 1/4 I got this for my girl, but I ride it more than her. It boogies and surfs great! Just so much fun! I’m amazed at how far soft board performance has come. Catch surfs’ line is sick. I broke my leg last spring surfing, and I boogie boarded to get my arms back for weeks on this thing until I could stand again..

8. Purple/Blue Stripe 9'2 1/2 x 17 1/2 x 22 1/2 x 14 1/2 x 2 1/8 Self shape (for my lady but she shares), glass, and finish. My Grandmothers old sheets glassed in. Hand made thruster set. I’m comfortable on long equipment, especially in larger surf, and if you don't know how 9+ ft of rail feels, you’re missing out. In larger waves this things fire. I love sitting outside by myself and my G-ma with this. 9. Ponce Inlet Sign 24" x 24" I was fortunate enough to grow up a mile from the lighthouse. Central Florida and our little mushy wave has sculpted me as a human, and I am so, so thankful to call you home. @goinright

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER FISHING OUTLOOK
FISHING REPORT OFFSHORE It is hard to say that this isn't the best time of year to live in Central Florida. The months of September and October will gradually bring cooler air with cold fronts approaching from the North. With this, the water will cool down a bit and give us a change from all the hot summer heat! You can expect higher winds as the cold fronts are coming down in weekly or monthly waves. Although this is somewhat of a huge disadvantage for fisherman, the bites will become much more aggressive and constant throughout the fall days. Most of the reports coming in have been hitting a variety of species. Sea bass, vermillion snapper, king mackerel, sharks, wahoo and a few mahi as well. A good bit of action has been found following bait schools several miles off of the beaches. Slow trolling with live baits or drifting with fresh dead baits has been the most productive method of getting these fish to bite behind shrimp boats. INSHORE With the cooler water temperatures, the trout game has turned on! In addition there has been reports of schools of redfish in the lagoon. In the deeper waters surrounding New Smyrna, there has been some snook and tarpon to be found. We don't see the bite slowing down at all the next month or two. We have experienced lower water levels lately, and in return the fish have been schooling up big time during the morning. Giant bull reds have also been schooled up in both lagoons for their annual spawn with fish in the 20-40lb rang, early fall is prime time for catching these trophy size redfish. For those If you’re fishing the Jetty, you will be able to get on some upper to over-slot redfish. The amount of bait fish has been pretty thick the last few weeks. If you want to see some great action, head out to the beach and see if you can find schools of mullet swimming the shore! Lastly for the courageous angler, there will be quite a show of tarpon rolling off the beaches. If you have a yak, SUP, or boat, now is one of the best times to get a poon on the end of your line. Try free-lining some mullet and see what you can come up with!

TALK STORY
TALK STORY: CRAIG COLBURN Craig “C-Dawg” Colburn has been a staple in the community for quite some time. C-Dawg is someone that I have tremendous respect for on so many different levels. One thing that I admire the most about Dawg, is he has that eternal stoke! Never will you see him sitting still for a moment. Colburn is up at dawn charging the main peak, and even after throwing boxes all day for his day job, he still has tons of energy stored to out paddle any grommet and to make sure he is still catching the best waves of the day. On top of it all, I don’t think there is a funnier human on this planet that I would rather crack a beer with than Mr. Craig Colburn. A true legend that will have you laughing your ass off in no time. Let’s hear more from C-Dawg and what keeps his fire alive.

What motto do you live by, if any? Salt for the Soul How long have you been surfing for? 48 Years Surfing You surfed competitively and also have been a part of the contest scene for a long time. Please tell us more about this. I didn't surf competitively as a young grom- One day my buddy, Bob Lindsley, talked me into entering an ESA Contest. I won 1A, 2A and got third in 3A Men’s. I was Hooked!! Over the next few years I was able to win the FL State Championships, Regional Championships and Two East Coast Championships. Then I went on to Judging. I judged many Pro Events for the Bud Surf Tour and the ASP. Eventually I ran events as
well. This enabled me to travel to many beautiful locations and surf so many great waves! I got to work and surf with so many awesome people such as Jack Shipley, Al Hunt, PT, Ian Cairns, Midget Smith, Gary Linden, Nat Young and Rabbit Kekai. You’re one person who is considered a Ponce and NSB Inlet local. That is a rare occurrence! What are your favorite parts about each spot? It's really nice having lived on both sides of The Inlet. Smyrna has always been so consistent and there's usually a wave to be found. Ponce is a “Right Hander", which I love! It’s similar to a Point Break! It's not as powerful as NSB but clean lines and beautiful clear water. What was it like in 70’s and 80's being a surfer in our area?

It was great! We had less crowds, less hassle in the water, and we had respect. We had Janie's Surf Shop on Flagler Ave where you could ring the doorbell at 7:00 am and Janie's dad would come out and sell you a bar of wax, no worries. There was Lunar Arcade across the street, Foosball all night with putt-putt golf on the roof. At least NSB still has the Dairy Queen. Beaches were opened all night, horses on the beach, night driving, double parking, keg parties because "drinking was allowed. The Beaches were monitored by the City Police, which were rarely around. Who were the top guys at the inlet back in those days? NSB: Ronnie Shippman, Randy Schwoerer, Jeff Crawford, Maddog, Big R, CB, Buddy Wright, Butch and Terry Presley, Tommy Preston, Ross Pell,
JL, C Lyles, JJ, Kim McNair and Coffee Bean Ponce: Bernie and John Crouch, Bobby Owens, Beaver, Ronnie Rannie, Kevin Ogden, Rick and Craig Tresher, Bruce and Pete Miller, Steve Reeves, Mike Duncan and Big Jim Morris. If you can go back 40 years what advice would you give yourself? Don't worry. It’s all going to work out and laugh everyday!!! What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the New Smyrna Beach & Daytona Beach area? The Traffic. The Crowds. The Rules. What is our youth lacking? There are a lot of good "young surfers" from
this area. What some of our youth are lacking is Respect and Etiquette! What's the best traveling experience in your life? I've had so many good surf trips in my life but the 1984 surf trip to Hawaii for the US Surfing Championships at Makaha was the Best! I went for 2 weeks but stayed for 2 months! I made the finals, but the best part was watching Kelly Slater win his first US Amateur title! Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs? To my Beautiful wife Jeannie who treats me like a King every single day and loves my Passion for Surfing!! Nicole and Nate my wonderful children who I am so proud of and Ashley and Tara my step daughters whom I am proud of too. Thank you for all of your support along the way..
