NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to our annual holiday issue! In the process of determining what to feature in this lovely print publication, I thought about what makes this time of year so special. The most obvious thing to me is spending time with my family. That’s what the holidays are all about! It’s about continuing cherished traditions, being a secret Santa, and just giving to those you love. This time of year is also a great time to get away from it all, so it only made sense to talk about winter getaways, awesome gifts, and diving into those precious holiday eats. Yes, I am just going to say it. Even with the spirit of giving in full force, this time of year should be the time where you get to pull out all the stops and spoil the ones you love - including yourself. We are all about picking out that special something for your Mom or even your weird Uncle Gary, but don't forget about #1. Holidays can be stressful and when you feel the walls caving in, or when babe surprises you with a nightmare of a gift like a thighmaster, don't be afraid to take off on a little winter vacay to blow off some steam and relax. Check out our gear guide and remember you deserve a little something special too. So Ho Ho Ho to you! BRYAN FORAND Founder / Editor

THE 'ALL NEW '

FLAGLER TAVERN SAME PLACE, NEW FACE The Flagler Tavern is an iconic bar and restaurant in New Smyrna Beach, FL known for its festive nightlife and laid back atmosphere. For decades Flagler Tavern has been a staple in our community, and in August of 2014 new owners came in with a vision. The potential had always been there, it just needed the right people to come in and make changes. The new owners wanted to keep the historic heritage of this longtime local hangout but invest in major improvements. They've been working on updates to everything from the food and drink menus to the logo, theme and interior decor. They added a massive deck to accommodate guests who enjoy sitting on the front porch and enjoying the ocean breeze. Prior to the renovation, the upstairs wasn’t accessible for dining. Now an upstairs deck overlooks the street, allowing you to dine while watching the activity along New Smyrna Beach’s most active and picturesque avenue. The new owners also envisioned an intimate getaway for adventurous guests wanting to kick it up a notch and escape the hustle and bustle downstairs. Thus, an upstairs speakeasy named The Bounty was born. The Bounty at Flagler Tavern was designed to impress with it’s unique and intimate atmosphere, paying homage to the prohibition era and earlier days of our town. The wood from the original historic building lines the walls in what feels like a place where fishermen and sailors from the 1920s would gather for drinks and private meetings. The bartenders are true mixologists, handcrafting smoke infused drinks from barrels of their private stock whiskey to serve alongside the full menu. In addition to the speakeasy and deck areas, this major expansion and renovation project didn’t leave any stone unturned. Throughout the building, Flagler Tavern incorporated new decor inspired by the nautical roots of New Smyrna’s fishing town. The former area for Johnny’s Restaurant was turned into the Pilar Bar, with glowing blue lights and vintage beach decor that reminds you of a place where Ernest Hemingway would dine. The details reflect the fishing lifestyle that is very much a part of the town’s heritage and present day personality. The last few finishing touches are still underway for this massive renovation project, but it’s impact on the area is already being felt. Join us here for our Annual Fluid Magazine Holiday Party on December 18th!

ULTIMATE WINTER VACATIONS WORDS BY: JOHN BROOKS & BRYAN FORAND

TAKE A TRIP Whether you’re ready for the open road or a plane ride, the beach or the mountains, boys trip or family fun, these winter vacation spots are sure to make your holidays memorable. The toughest part is choosing only one… Or better yet, take off the whole winter and try them all! This is your guide for the perfect holiday getaway.

01 Costa Rica Costa Rica has two seasons, summer (verano – December through April) and winter (invierno – May through November), although they are lucky enough to enjoy pleasant weather year round. The two seasons are also known as the dry season and rainy season from a meteorological perspective, or as many of our friends in Costa Rica call it, high season and low season in regards to the tourist industry. Costa Rica is almost the exact opposite of what those in the northern states are accustomed to in winter making it a great vacation destination for those looking to get out of the snow and onto the beach. While the north is blanketed in snow and ice December through April, Costa Rica is enjoying summer like weather and great surf. The best time to visit Costa Rica is from midDecember to April (the dry season). This peak tourist season boasts plenty of sunshine making it an ideal time for exploring rainforests and lounging on beaches. Costa also has fantastic hiking, kayaking, and for the more adventurous, the zip-lining and sky bridges at Arenal are not to be missed. Arenal is an active Volcano and if you are lucky you just might get to witness an eruption while you soak in the hot springs at the base of the mountain. One of our personal favorite spots to visit is our friends at Casa Marbella, located on the Nicoya Peninsula. During the winter months, this area has clear water and consistent surf groomed with offshore winds. As the water gets clear in these winter months, the fishing improves and the bite is on! After a long day at the beach, be sure to join one of the beach parties and experience an eye popping sunset to finish off the day. PHOTOS: RUDDY

02 Puerto Rico If you’re looking for a holiday getaway that is equal parts surf trip and family fun, then Puerto Rico is the perfect place. Widely regarded as the epicenter of Caribbean surfing, PR offers the opportunity for a first class surf adventure and many other activities to keep the non-surfing members of your group happy. If you are heading to Puerto Rico for a surf adventure then Rincon in the Northwest corner of the island is the place to start. While there are literally waves on all corners of PR, the northwest area of Aguadilla and Rincon are a surfers paradise. With an open window that receives the northeast swells created by cold fronts that move off the Eastern seaboard and a plethora of beachbreaks, reefs, and points, the northwest has helped to earn Puerto Rico the moniker of the “Hawaii of the East.” Over the years there have been many International Surf Contests held in Puerto Rico and they continue to have a successful national competition circuit. For those not looking to brave the waves on offer, there are still plenty of things to explore on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Boasting three of the planets eight bioluminescent bays you can kayak through a canal of mangroves to reach the Laguna Grande in Fajardo to experience this magical nocturnal illumination. The diversity of coral reefs surrounding the island make for breathtaking snorkeling and diving adventures and a 28,000 acre rain forest at El Yunque ensures that whatever your searching for you are certain to find it on Puerto Rico. Add in year round tropical weather and no passport required, and you have to put Puerto Rico at the top of the list for perfect holiday vacations. PHOTOS: RUDDY

03 The Florida Keys

Like siblings, each Key is similar but also has its own distinct personality and vibe. However, they all have a few things in common. First, there is the island vibe. The residents are all about enjoying all that the Keys has to offer and sharing it with the visitors each winter. Then there is the landscape. Turquoise water, sugar sand, lush green vistas - the Keys is full of views that will take your breath away. And if nature is not your thing, there is always the bar. They take their day drinking serious so if you can't hang, don't even try. You can spot the Fluid crew at local spots like Lorelei's in Islamorada, taking in the sunset and some fresh seafood.

PHOTO: GUNNER HUGHES PHOTO: RUDDY

Yes my friend, the Keys is literally the best Florida has to offer. This winter, treat yourself and your loved ones to a much needed getaway. Leave your worries behind but bring your cooler and reel - your going to need that.

PHOTO: JASON ARNOLD

But first you gotta get through that Miami traffic. Just keep driving! Trust me, it will get better. Once you hit the 18 mile stretch of US between Florida City to Key Largo, you will feel your worries melt away with each passing mile. The small Keys Scenic Highway may seem like forever, but they were not lying when they say scenic. Take in the views of the crystal clear water and mangroves that seem to be welcoming you to paradise.

PHOTO: RUDDY

Ask anyone who has ever been to the Keys to describe their trip. You will see even most stressed out person instantly relax, look up to the sky a little and try to remember what it feels like to be 2 rum runners deep breathing in the salty air. There is something so special about the Keys - which is why it has inspired artists from Hemingway to the Beach Boys.

04 Camping

Next up is the Blue Springs State Park located in Orange City and home to the largest population of West Indian Manatees in Florida. The Manatees flock to the spring in the winter to enjoy the constant 73 degree water that flows from the underground waterway. The largest spring on the St. Johns River, Blue Springs offers fishing, canoeing, swimming, and boating. You can snorkel or dive or rent an inner tube and float your way down the meandering spring run. Riverboat tours are also available as are hiking trails and picnic areas making Blue Springs a must stop on your camping itinerary. With many other campsites available, Central Florida boasts a wide range of camping experiences from primitive style to luxury cabins. It’s a great way to enjoy family fun in the great outdoors over the holidays.

Sponsored by:

PHOTO: GUNNER HUGHES

If you are looking for a great holiday camping adventure you might as well start where it all began at the Anastasia State Park in our nations’ oldest city of St. Augustine. At Anastasia you can enjoy camping, nature trails, beach time, water sports and an archaeological site where coquina rock was mined to create the nearby fortress, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Nature trails meander through the ancient dunes and shaded by hammock forest. The full facility campground is located in a wooded area and is walking or cycling distance to the hard packed sand of the beach that offers the chance to head north to get a view across the inlet at the Castillo de San Marcos.

PHOTO: RUDDY

The Sunshine State has been a camping destination since the explorers sailed our coast and set up camp five centuries ago. The combination of sun, surf, soft breezes and fresh air allow for year round camping and a diversity that is unparalleled. Central Florida offers lush forests, sprawling rivers, springs, and endless coastline making it a perfect place whether you are in an RV, tent, or cabin.

05 Snowshoe Mountain One of the worst things about Florida is the lack of mountains, but for those of us wanting to get our winter fix in, Snowshoe Mountain, located in West Virginia, is a close by winter wonderland. What makes Snowshoe Mountain so darn, well, wonderful? Start with the unmatched terrain, endless challenges, unique ski options, and state of the art snowmaking. Then add a variety of apres-ski activities including live music, fine dining, a teen nightclub, and you have the perfect getaway for the whole family. With a ski village situated atop the mountain it feels like you are on top of the world, and then all you have to do is boot up and let gravity bring you down. Despite its southern location, Snowshoe receives an eye-raising average annual snowfall of 180 inches. They are the top resort on the East Coast in terms of snow quality, diverse terrain, nightlife, family events, and more. Snowshoe offers some of the best skiing south of New England and even a surprising amount of nightlife for its secluded location in the mountains of West Virginia. If you are looking for the perfect road trip this winter, we highly recommend Snowshoe Mountain. Visit snowshowmtn.com for more info

FISHING OUTLOOK

Sponsored by:

Inshore Cooler temperatures should push fish further back into creeks and backwater areas. Fishing will still be productive in the mornings but redfish and trout should also feed into the afternoon as the sun warms the water up throughout the day. Free-lined mullet will produce the best hits in the back creeks, but fish can also be taken on live shrimp, Gulp baits, DOA’s, and the occasional top water strike. Pitching live and cut bait under docks in the Intracoastal can produce keeper mangrove snapper, trout, reds, and the occasional small grouper. Bigger flounder and sheepshead should also start making there way back into the river. Dock lights will still have some trout on them but the cooler it gets the thicker the bluefish become.

offshore Sailfish will still be in the normal areas from 180’- 350’ of water until a few more cold fronts push the bait pods further south. Near shore wrecks from 60’-90’ feet of water will hold a large variety of fish. Kingfish and false albacore are still plentiful for trolling. Bottom fishing should be very good and a variety of great tasting fish can be caught. While there was not even a red snapper season this year there are still plenty of them out there. Triggerfish, lane and mangrove snapper, black sea bass, and large flounder are all possible on these near shore wrecks. Keep a large jig or live bait pitch rod ready for cobia as they are still out there and have been known to follow fish up from the bottom or just come up to the boat to investigate. They fight hard and taste great!
