EDITOR'S NOTE

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY Packing up all of your possessions and leaving everything behind is a horrible feeling, and that is exactly how we prepared for Hurricane Matthew. Based in the coastal town of New Smyrna Beach, our house isn't located right on the beach, but we're off the river a few blocks. So our only option was to prepare for the worst and expect major damage and catastrophic flooding. When it comes to flood damage, we completely dodged a bullet. Our neighbors just 35 miles to the north in Flagler and St. Augustine weren't so lucky as they got the catastrophic flooding that we expected in Volusia County. As an adult living in Central Florida, I've experienced two major hurricanes in my lifetime thus far, the wrath of 2005, and Matthew. Both of the experiences couldn't have been any different. The biggest difference between now and 2005, is now I have two young kids to keep out of harm’s way. Without kids, you sit put and don't think about leaving town. It's a reason to have a few days off work, load up the cooler, gas cans, and have what we all know as a "hurricane party". These parties are actually pretty glorious too. One testament to how serious we are about them is the fact that the liquor stores were virtually completely out of booze. I saw it with my own eyes! There are so many emotions that come along with a storm coming your way. As a surfer you’re always anticipating some type of reward in the form of long ground swells coming toward you. For some reason this storm had an erie feeling to it. The entire East Coast was trying to get out of town as Hurricane Matthew chugged up the coast. For those that didn't evacuate their coastal homes, they all had the same message. "Never again will I stay home for another hurricane. It isn't worth it!" Stay safe and pray for the next few hurricane seasons to be quiet. Bryan Forand | Editor

AFTER THE

THE NUMBERS Between the hurricane damage and flooding, thousands of lives were taken. It truly was a global disaster. In the deprived country of Haiti, over a 1,000 lives were lost. In the U.S., over 43 lives were claimed. Peak intensity was late Sept. 30 into early Oct. 1 when it reached Category 5 strength with 160 mph winds, as it entered the eastern Caribbean. Although we didn’t have a direct hit, the impact that Hurricane Matthew had will never be forgotten. Storm surge flooding affected the St. Augustine area, including major flooding on

20

Anastasia Island, where water was reported to be 2.5 feet above ground level. To the south in nearby Flagler Beach, parts of A1A, approximately a 1.3-mile section of A1A near Flagler Beach was washed out by Matthew's powerful waves. In addition to the loss of lives from this storm, there were billions of damages in the United States, making it the most expensive storm since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In our eyes, the most important statistic that cannot be quantified is the

out pour of community support before and after the passing of the storm. From the guts and glory of first responders and emergency personal, to the neighbor who helped you scoop sandbags, hang plywood, and the clean up afterwards. The love and support was alive and well! Words by: Bryan Forand

STAY OR GO? When it comes to Hurricanes, lots of folks find themselves in this dilemma that was so well delivered by The Clash in their 1981 hit by the same name. The reality is that in fact “if you go, there will be trouble and if you stay, it will be double” could never be more accurate than when a category 3 Hurricane is bearing down on the coast of Florida. I liken it to being half way through a roller coaster and suddenly wanting to get off the ride, but you can’t. We, as surfers, are especially tempted to stay behind in the hopes of

scoring some barrels once the wind switches and there is nobody around. As a firefighter and EMT for the last decade here on our barrier island, I can tell you with all the confidence in the world that you should always leave. The surf isn’t going to be any good while the storm is near and as soon as it clears they will let you back to get shacked out of your mind. Not to mention, the risk that you put yourself in, as well as the EMS and Fire personnel that will

have to rescue you in the event that you are sick or injured, is not worth it. I particularly like the idea of finding a friends house inland and getting your crew together for a good ‘ole hurricane party. Get yourself a generator, a cooler for brews, and throw some movies on and ride out the storm with your pals. Be safe, catch up with some friends, and when it’s all over, go have that barrel fest! ACCESSING THE DAMAGE While most people think about losing shingles or broken windows, there are many different ways that our community is impacted by hurricanes. Businesses are closed and tourism comes to a screeching halt while people clog I-4 and I-95 trying to get out of the way of the storm. Of course there are the usual trees and power lines down along with flooding and in some cases

Photo: AJ Neste

total destruction of homes, but one area people often overlook is the loss of time. Days away from work or family along with time spent preparing for the storm and then the clean up afterwards, usually ends up claiming a week or more. That’s if you have no significant damage. For surfers there can be damage in the form of ruined sandbars and polluted water along with beach erosion and accessibility issues. This is also a great time for our community to come together and help each other. I always enjoy seeing neighbors, that might rarely speak, get out and lend a hand to help the less fortunate in their neighborhood. In the midst of tragedy it’s always refreshing to see the better side of humanity shine through. Words by: John Brooks

Photo: Adam Hogan

LUCK OF THE DRAW I would never want to have to bet on the path a hurricane may or may not take…talk about lousy odds. The fact is that even with all the technology in today’s world it’s still a bit of a guessing game when it comes down to who is getting lucky and who is getting slammed. A wobble here or there in the storm or a regeneration of the eye wall can spare entire cities and counties the wrath of mother nature when she’s pissed off. We were just that lucky with Matthew as a slight deviation in track took our storm surge from a projected 11 feet down to a more manageable 4 feet. Not saying we didn’t get spanked, but luck was definitely on our side that Thursday night and Friday morning. Our neighbors to the north in Flagler and St. Augustine were not so lucky as they got the catastrophic flooding that we were forecasted to receive. Fortunately for Florida, there was minimal loss of life as people heeded the evacuation orders and now are getting back to the business at hand. The real lucky people were the folks in Miami getting ridiculously tubed for two days while we were sandbagging our back doors. I always feel lucky after events like Matthew when I see our community reach out and help each other put the pieces back together. Whether it’s swapping stories out in the lineup or helping the neighbor clean up his yard, the camaraderie that evolves from these storms makes us all lucky to live in such a wonderful place. OCEAN IMPACT

OCEAN IMPACT From Haiti to North Carolina, Hurricane Matthew left a nasty trail of devastation. Here in the Southeast, staggering quantities of rain and the resulting flooding induced the greatest damage, while storm surge and violent winds also wreaked havoc. With all the catastrophic damage on the land, the waterways and ocean also received its fair share of beating as well.

Effects for Fisherman Many businesses lining the river will never forget the wrath of this past storm. It is a tough pill to swallow when reminisce on the destruction to the homes and intracoastal. Many of these businesses will be closed for months or even years, and the houses and docks are still suffering. When you ride down the river you see many boats that are dry docked in the mangroves or sitting on the bottom. It seems like over half of the docks are completely gone or damaged. As for the water conditions, the lagoon is still plenty higher than normal. Offshore there is plenty of extra flotsam. As for the fish, they seemed scattered after the hurricane, but surprisingly find a pattern quite rapidly. Effects for Surfer This storm had a really eerie feeling associated with it. Between that hype that was surrounded from the media, and the lack of people that stayed through the storm, there was a very bizarre aftermath. Right after the storm

NOV/DEC FISHING OUTLOOK

FISHING REPORT OFFSHORE Sailfish will still be in the normal areas from 250350’ of water until a few more cold fronts push the bait pods further south. Look for that edge of blue water and you might find what you are after. While we are on the topic of water color, mahi have started to show up in the shallower green water. Near shore wrecks from 60’-90’ feet of water will hold a large variety of fish. Kingfish and Bonita are plentiful. Triggerfish, lane and mangrove snapper, black sea bass, and large flounder are all possible on these near shore wrecks. Keep a large jig or live bait pitch rod ready for cobia as they are still out there and have been known to follow fish up from the bottom or just come up to the boat to investigate. There is so much that we love about cobia, they fight hard and taste great! Best of luck fellow anglers.

Photo: Jason Arnold

INSHORE If you can forget about the disaster that Hurricane Matthew left on us, the weather has been amazing the past month. With cooler temperatures approaching, expect fish to push into creeks and backwater areas. Fishing will still be productive in the early mornings, but the good news is redfish and trout should also feed into the afternoon as the sun warms the water up throughout the day. Free-lined mullet will be your best bet in the back creeks, but fish can also be taken on live shrimp, Gulp baits, DOA’s, and the occasional top water strike. In the backwater, alternative equipment such as paddleboards and kayaks will keep you secluded from the harsh wind that comes as winter approaches. There has been a good bit of action on snook in the later part of the year. We will never have the amount of snook that counties to the south of us have, but we will take whatever we can get. Pitching live and cut bait under docks in the Intracoastal can produce keeper mangrove snapper, trout, reds, and the occasional small grouper. Bigger flounder and sheepshead should also start making there way back into the river and around the jetties. Dock lights will still have some trout on them but the cooler it gets the thicker the bluefish become.

TURKEY, CRANBERRY, + BRIE SANDWICH BROUGHT TO YOU BY NSB BITES PHOTOS COURTESY OF: MACKENZIE SMITH

There are two types of people in this world. Those who could care less about leftovers and those who are obsessed. On Thanksgiving, however, these two types of people always seem to merge on the agreement that leftovers might just be the best part of this holiday. There's just something special and tasty about stacking leftover turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry jelly between two halves of a buttery baked roll. And in case you feel the urge to make those leftover sandwiches even more special, then be sure to check out our Ultimate Sandwich Guide to Thanksgiving Leftovers. INGREDIENTS: • 2 slices fluffy white bread • 1/4 lb thick sliced roasted turkey • 2 tbsp cranberry jam • 1/4 cup fresh spinach leaves • 3 slices of brie 1. Begin by smearing each piece of fluffy white bread with cranberry jam. Add the thick slices of roasted turkey breast, then the spinach (trying to pack it down as much as possible) and lastly the brie to one half of the bread and top the sandwich with the other piece of bread. 2. Take a rectangle sized sheet of wax paper or butcher paper and put the sandwich in the middle. Pull up two sides above the middle of the sandwich and roll down towards the sandwich until it's snug. Take the other two sides of the paper and fold them under the sandwich. With a very sharp serrated knife, slice down the middle of the sandwich to separate the two halves and serve. TALK STORY: Frieda Zamba When citing Frieda Zamba’s accolades, it is truly mind blowing how much this amazing person from the quaint town of Flagler Beach has accomplished. She was a four time ASP Women's World Surfing Champion (1984, 85, 86 and 88), five time Surfer Poll Awards, featured in Sports Illustrated “Queen of the Surf” in 1997, inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame as Woman Surfer of the Year in 1998, inducted into the East Coast Hall of Fame in 2006, four time recipient of the Key to the City of Flagler Beach, and the Frieda Zamba Aquatic Complex was dedicated in her honor in 1988. Every accomplishment she has reached and conquered has been the result of hard work and being at the top of her game in a highly competitive sport. In addition to being a world champion and highly honored individual, Frieda Zamba is one of the most humble and genuine people that I’ve ever come in contact with. Always looking out for the well-being of others, she continues to give back to the community by sculpting the competitive careers of young athletes. Let’s hear more about Frieda’s past and her impact on the youth as a Global Surf Coach. Intro by: Bryan Forand What motto do you live by if any? “A strong body, a strong mind.” “Love the life you live, live the life you love.” As a Global Surf Coach, what is the biggest joy you find with guiding the youth? Seeing them break through and finally "get it". I see a lot of kids struggle with progressing, because they've never focused on starting with a solid foundation in their surfing. They want to run before they can walk. When I point out things that need to be fixed or tweaked and they apply them and realize how much easier things become, their reaction is positive and you immediately see the confidence in their surfing. What is the biggest difference between now and when you were on the World Tour? There are so many differences like exotic locations, jet ski assist, social platforms, and the prize purse. I remember having a 25 minute heat at Bells in solid 6-8 ft surf. The paddle back out is like seeing a mirage in the desert; you never quite reach it. It definitely separated the weak paddlers from the strong ones. Then there was the time it was my first year on tour. I surfed an event in Japan, and a typhoon hit that night. The next morning the surf was just an endless cloud break with whitewater to the horizon, and they sent the women out. It was pretty easy planning my heat strategy: (1) don’t drown, (2) don't let go of your board, (3) and you only need two whitewaters to the

beach. Go for the length of ride and style points! Nobody made it out that day and having to judge that must of been as painful as surfing it. Everyone knows you as representing the small coastal town of Flagler Beach. Is that where you grew up? Yes, Flagler was the sleepily lil’ beach town they would dub it, but it isn't really. I mean the town is pretty chill, but the surf scene when I was growing up was full of energy. The beach was the focal point of the town, and if you didn't surf you would watch the locals surf. I was surrounded by such good surfing friends. They all in some way contributed to what I achieved because they were a part of my journey. I surfed mostly with the older guys and the guys my age because there weren't many girls that surfed, maybe two or three. Looking back now it was a pretty special time as all the older guys would look out for me and help me if I couldn't get out. I tried to keep up with them in the surf, and it pushed me to reach things that I might of thought at the time were out of my reach. Why did you move to Costa Rica? Do you miss Florida? I needed a change. Things in my life weren't going well and it was affecting me mentally and physically. I knew it was time to move on, and I was the only one who could make it happen. First plan of order was breaking out my bucket list and I saw I had three things left to cross off: Jump out of an airplane, See Simple Minds in concert and surf the Maldives. Then I created a life criteria for myself. I knew I wanted to start surf coaching, so I had to find a place that allowed for that where there is surf everyday, the water is warm, and I can get back to the states in the same day. From that I picked Costa Rica! Before I packed up and left I managed to check off the first two things on my bucket list, and I’m still working on the last one. What was the pinnacle of your career? My first World Title, because it was the one I dreamt about the most and had the hardest time just trying to

figure out how to make it happen. I was just learning as I was going, making lots of mistakes along the way and being denied, but when it finally happened I remember just reflecting on all I went through and how I never gave up. It was the most rewarding by far for as bad as I wanted it. You still just don't know if you will ever achieve it. What is our youth lacking? In my eyes their lacking the history of our sport, but when you question that, you ask “Where would they learn that?” It’s not taught in school. I guess I could be critical of myself for not teaching the history to my students, but I have them for a limited time. For the most part they only want to concentrate on themselves which is understandable. I could see me asking them, “Who was Duke Kahanamoku?” I can only imagine their reaction as being, "Who did he ride for?” and “Can I find him on Instagram?” Seriously though, now that surfing is an Olympic sport maybe these surfing academies that are popping up will implement the educational side of surfing. I would much rather sit through a class on surfing history than the history of the Civil War.
