NOTE FROM THE
EDITOR
I was talking to a few people during the making of this issues board guide, and they asked me a question that really made me think deep. “Where has surfing gotten me?” That’s easy to answer, everywhere!! It sounds close minded to say, but I don’t know where I would be without it. Lifelong friends have been made, amazing travels have been had, and every work opportunity has revolved around the beach or surfing. Being in my early thirties, surfing is what will keep me forever young. Most people change as they grow older. They grow apart from their friends and start their own family. Many of us have gotten married and most with kids now, but we will never grow up or change our ways. Surfers have a certain level of selfishness. I am not sure if that is the best word to describe us, but it is the easiest way to describe our life choices. Skipping work, school, special occasions, and appointments all for our passion of the ocean. We save all year to go away for a week to a tropical location in search of swells that have traveled thousands of miles to end their journey at the shores edge. It’s a weird obsession that so many people don’t understand. At the same time there are things like hunting, that I ask my friends why they love it so much, but really I can’t relate. Everyone is different and that is just the way life is. I recently found a grade school project that made me laugh. The project main topic was “what I wanted to be when I grow up”, and my answer was “own my own surf shop”(even had a nice sketch of a two story building splattered with surf logos). I haven’t obtained that goal, but I can’t complain for a second, super blessed! I am the GM at one of the most prestigious surf shops on the East Coast, Salty Dog in Daytona Beach. I have a great boss, unreal co-workers and love the place. Being a surfer has gIVEN me that great opportunity and also help me release my ideas through this publication. Being a surfer can be a huge gift or a major detour, it’s all in the path you take.

Where do you live? Orlando, but I spend way more time traveling than I ever do at home ORiginally from? Winter Haven, Florida Occupation? Trained Carnival Gypsy (Lion Tamer) Where would your dream trip take you? I love it, I know it will get old eventually, but I’m loving it for now. I think I’m so enthralled by traveling because I’m from such a tiny town, I need to know what else is out there. Turn on’s? Intelligence, Motivation, Athleticism, Humor Turn off’s? Arrogance, Hair Jell, Over dependence on technology, Pessimism Most important thing on a first date? Feeling comfortable, when a girl is comfortable then she can have fun and open up. Also attentiveness, don’t take a vegetarian to a steakhouse. Beach, River, or Asphalt? Beach. Second, by a lake. (I did grow up in winter haven after all) Best Beach in Florida? I’m not telling where my secret spot is! Favorite celebrity? I don’t keep up with celebrity gossip, I barely watch TV. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate a good movie, but it’s not in my interest to keep up with the actors lives. Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? Talent and creativity in any form is hot! I won’t pick favorites but wakeskaters should be added to the list! Favorite Spot to have a good night out? Ocean Deck is a fun spot on the beachside. Worst Pickup Line? They are all bad! Please, Please guys, just don’t use them! I beg you! Do you surf, wakeboard, or skateboard? I really want to learn how to skateboard, but I’m clumsy and slightly a chicken. So I’m afraid to break a bone.
How did you like shooting with our magazine? It was a lot of fun! Just like hanging out, goofing around, but they happened to be taking pictures of me too. Do you have any quirks? I hiccup...a lot! The guys were enjoying laughing at my hiccups at the shoot. Do you have any hobbies? I love to cook, well, when I’m actually home! I’m always looking up recipes, I rarely make the same dish twice. Favorite travel destination? I was taken to Nitro City, Panama for my birthday last year. It was so beautiful and so much fun! It’s an action sports resort with a cable park for wakeboarding/ wakeskating, dirt bike track, ATVs, jet skies, paddle boards, an arcade! It was right on the beach with an amazing view of the mountains. Follow me on Instagram @Paris_Nichole and Twitter @ParisNichole

If you’re not familiar with Ryan Villopoto, then let’s play a little catch up. Ryan has been at the top of the game since entering the pro platform of motocross racing. He has won every championship there is to win, most of them multiple times including the 250 and 450 Supercross and Outdoor titles, 250 and 450 Motocross of Nations titles (this race is against the best on the planet), and the $1,000,000.00 Monster Energy Cup..... THATS RIGHT... he won a MILLION dollars in one night! The first and ONLY person to do so. He is the current AMA Supercross Champion for the second year running and is currently mid way through the 2013 Supercross season fighting for his third consecutive SX title. However everything above has not come without a price to Ryan and his family. Ryan has torn and had surgery on almost every ligament in both of his knees, broken nearly every single bone in his body, and almost had the pressure of the sport and winning crush his relationship with his entire family! But after an eye opening injury in 2010, in which Ryan had just shattered every bone in his leg, things began to settle in. He would go on to marry the love of his life, burry the hatchet with his family..... and oh yeah go on to win every championship there is to win in 2011. As Ryan moves forward in life and continues his quest to be the best of all time, he remains humbled, focused, and has vowed to never let things that affected him so negatively in the past effect his future. Once you read this article, Ryan should be somewhere on the east coast fighting for the Supercross title. So I would ask that you join us in saying GO RV GO as his quest for greatness rolls on!

what was the last thing you did before this interview? Went on a mountain bike ride. Where’s your home in Florida? Minneola, which is located in Lake County. Your training program is pretty intense, what’s your average day like? Wake up, a little bit of cardio, breakfast, head to the track, & then the gym. Who or what inspires you the most? I don’t really know. I think inspiration comes daily, and I take it as it comes. What’s your greatest strength? I am able to block everything out no matter what it is once I line up on the gate. What’s your greatest weakness? I am not a huge fan of training Tell us a little about your diet, what types of food do you typically eat? Just super clean food. Mostly chicken and fish. Do you have any pets? Two french bulldogs. Sako and Olive Of all your accomplishments which is the most special to you? Probably my first 450 SX Title What’s your favorite beach in FL, and do you surf? Haven’t really had a lot of time to explore but I would say Clearwater and I wanna learn to surf but gotta find some time. With all the traveling through out the year, how do you stay focused on each event? You just take it race by race and have to remember it’s a long series and a championship cannot be won in a single race. Tell me about a life changing event? Getting married was a huge life changer and I look forward to the next step, “kids!” How do you evaluate success? This is a bit tough, but I would say being able to see the work I put in day in and day out payoff. Knowing it was worth the grind is a huge success. How has the season been thus far for you? It’s been a bit up and down but I am ready to step up my consistency and make it happen out there.

Years Repping? 16 Brands: Oakley and Ray Ban How many miles do you log each year on the road? Over 25,000 miles What type of vehicle do you conquer Florida in? Ford 150 FX How did you get your first sales representative job in the surf industry? This is the only one. Went from pro surfer/shaper to Oakley sales Rep. You represent the most elite brand out there(Oakley)! How did you pull that off? I was surfing for them since I was 15 years old, and then went on to run their east coast surf team. After that, started working in sales under Tom Hutson. Where
do you see the surf industry headed in 2013? (trends, what’s hot) Your guess is as good as mine. We have seen trends all over the map: retro and super bright colors lately. I need to stay focused and work on keeping my retailers in tune with what the consumers are asking for.
What was it like tearing up the pro ranks in the eighties? Really competitive. Surfing was changing with break through board design and the talent was insane. Surfing in contests with the likes of Curren, Pott’s, TC, and Occy, and also watching the legends like MR, BUGS, SHAUN. It was like watching a surf movie. It was a special time, PHOTO: COURTESY OF RICH RUDOLPH

was the transition from pro to rep? Pretty big change from living the dream to day dreaming on the road? Oakley
we always got our work DONE. He was a great teacher! How
did you get into shaping boards? My
shaper quit. I was really picky about my boards (yes I said it ), and had a hard time finding the right boards. Ed Leasure showed me the ropes. The rest is history. How
many boards have you shaped in your lifetime? 15 to 20 a week for 10 years or so. Too many to count.
Everyone claims the economy is hurting. Has your brand been hit hard the past few years? Oakley is such an incredible company involved in so many sports, we have seen double digit growth for several years. Worst part of your job? Data entry. Any good stories from all those years of being a road warrior? Dealing with counterfeiters is the worst, thinking someone might pull a gun!!!!!! What
is the best sales meeting you’ve ever been to? Maui! What is the best advice another rep has given you? Show up when
you say, and be in the stores a lot! That’s half the battle. Any
outs? JESUS CHRIST.

My girls,
they are incredible. They are always up for an adventure. The sport of surfing has given me an incredible journey, so many waves and great times. To all my close friends, each one has impacted me in a positive way. Thanks!
some really good friends. How

Fresh on the Fly is an invigorating, unique experience from the normal chain restaurants. When you walk in you see all these amazing fillets on display that will soon be delivered to your table. They offer a fresh, original, affordable, and delicious menu. Some of our favorites that we highly recommend are: The Mahi Cheese Steak, Fish Tacos, Oyster Shooters, Granny Smith Apple Salad, and their specialty desserts. It is apparent after you dine at Fresh on the Fly that they strive for excellence in every bite. They make it pretty clear that seafood is their specialty, but you will be surprised after you try one of their burgers. They are delicious!

What really separates Fresh on the Fly from other places is how environmentally conscious they are. They are one of the only restaurants that provide a healthy alternative for customers while making a beneficial environmental choice for our planet. They reduce paper and plastic plate and utensil waste by replacing paper and plastics with china and plant-based products. Little things like that make us love Fresh on the Fly. Not only do they care about important topics that others tend to overlook, but the food is absolutely amazing. We highly recommend that you go see our friends at 1210 International Parkway #162 Lake Mary. For more info: (407) 878-5808/ fresh-on-the-fly.com

Off The Hook Catches Your Attention When you walk into Off The Hook Raw Bar and Grill, first impressions are everything, and the owners have mastered the art of a good first impression. They have the perfect setup: a huge bar area great for dining or watching the big game, comfortable booth seating, and our favorite item, captain’s chairs. Ever devoured an amazing burger and drank an ice cold beer in a captain’s chair while watching the game on a flat screen? Then you just haven’t lived. Once you have taken in the sweet digs, take a deep whiff of the amazing flavors coming from the kitchen. Off The Hook is famous for its oysters, and the fish tacos have received rave reviews from many of the locals around town. Think big, flaky fresh fillets grilled and seasoned to perfection. These are the type of tacos that give a place a stellar reputation. From the innovative set up to the amazing food, it is quite obvious that Off The Hook has one priority: making sure customers have a memorable experience. Unlike some of the run of the mill “bar food” restaurants, they aren’t followers. No, Off The Hook is constantly finding creative ways to keep us happy and coming back for more. One of our favorite things is the Annual Oysterfest that they introduced to the New Smyrna area. Now, I am no mathematician, but it seems like Off The Hook has figured out a magical equation for a great night out. If I had to guess, it would probably be: cold beer +

The Supervillains are gearing up for the release of their seventh full-length album, Volume 8, which is scheduled to come out right after the New Year. This will be the band’s third release on their own Rah Rah Rah Records label (2011’s Postcards from Paradise LP and 2012’s Robots EP). On this unique record, the band has transitioned to handling all the production in-house, recording and producing the entire album themselves. Engineered and mixed by the band’s bassist Dan Grundorf, the album is a collection of covers and re-mixes, with some brand new material thrown in as well. Live staples from their set-list such as “Resin” (off of 2006’s Grow Yer Own) and the Slickers classic “Johnny Too Bad” finally get the official studio treatment. Obscure covers such as the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” and Toots and the Maytals’ “This Must Be True Love” are nestled in between remix’s of the bands songs. Some songs are chopped and screwed from the original masters with a tasty list of guest vocalists (Antonee First Class from the English Beat and well-respected FLA rapper DP shine very brightly) and the horn section from Orlando-based ska afficionados, Control This!, provides some serious punch in such tracks as “Bottom of the World” (from Postcards from Paradise). January 8th was the release of the single “Stuck” which is a remix to 2011’s “Stuck In The Middle” (featuring Antonee First Class, SBK, and Blak). Adding to an un-conventional album is an equally un-conventional release date: The band will release one track per week starting February 5th. Full-length hard copies and digital release is slated for April 9th.
Interview filled out by: Dom Maresco of The Supervillains Who are some of your favorite bands you played with and why? Pepper, Slightly Stoopid, The English Beat, Less than jake, Fishbone, The Mad Caddies, I could go on and on, We’ve definitely been blessed when it comes to the talent we’ve shared the stage with. We were lucky to have these bands take us under their wing. Especially Pepper, which signed us to their label and took us out on countless tours throwing us out in front of thousands and thousands. We are very grateful. Supervillains have such a huge following in Central Florida, what is your recipe for success in our area? Lots of hard work, a ton of shows and great support from the fans. We’ve been playing shows here for 15 years and the shows constantly get bigger and bigger. I love Orlando! What other areas besides Florida do you have a big fan base? Texas, Colorado, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington definitely stand out. We’ve hit those areas constantly and it shows. Our tunes go well with the beach. Best Advice another musician has given you? “Don’t take too many of those”. Which artists have influenced you? Op Ivy, Suicide Machines, NOFX, Mad Caddies, Bob, Sublime, The Toasters, Elvis Costello and Notorious B.I.G. Last time you embarrassed yourself or the band on stage? I don’t ever. I get the protection of the drums to hide if I need to. Skart is a fan of puking behind his amp on the reg, so I guess that’s embarassing, probably more of a relief. When you guys are back home relaxing, what is your daily routine? We run the band ourselves and as of recent we’ve been recording some of our own tunes. Along with the Supervillains we have a label called RAH RAH RAH Records and we’ve been signing some great acts like Kayavibe and The Attack. We have a couple more up and comers that we’re developing as well. So my day consists of office work, excersie, practice, & then at night, shows, drinking, repeat... Best cities to tour? Oh man..... Where do I start? We love Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Corpus, Denver, Colorado Springs, everywhere in CA and the Northwest is bomb too. They all have their own things about them! What do you love about central FL? Other than the fact that all of
our family is here? Two words; the weather! Other than that, it’s nice to know that in 45 mins I can be on the east coast or on the west coast of FL and in the water! What do you love about CFL nightlife? The downtown bar scene. I enjoy people watching and drinking with my friends. I really like the food on the weekends too, Columbian Burgers and The Rib Joint are both pretty tits. Who is the weird character of the group? We all have our quirks but Skart definitely is the weirdest. He has dreadlocks and lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Growing up he owned a pig. Your top 5 play list on your iPod? The Beatles, Weezer, Buju Banton, NOFX and Arctic Monkeys. Tell me something random, like your first job was a prison guard or your family owns a private island in the Caribbean? Actually I was a prison guard on a private island that my family owns. Tell me about a life changing event? The first time we met Pepper was at a surf video release in Cocoa Beach. There was maybe 20 people at the event. The show was whack, but we ended up hitting it off with them. We stayed in touch, and 3 or 4 years later we met up with them at a show at House of Blues. I hopped on their bus with “Massive” and they liked it so much that they signed us to their label. Shortly afterwards we became a full time national act and it’s been that way ever since. You never know who you will meet or where. Any pet peeves while touring or playing gigs? Too many to count! My fingers would fall off from typing. After about 3 days the excitement wears off and it sinks in that you’re going to be gone for 2 months, away from your family, your bed and even your pets! Its rough. That being said, I wouldn’t change a thing, I love my job and truly grateful for every opportunity. What’s next for you guys? We are currently in the middle of releasing a record. We have been releasing a track a week on iTunes as of feb 5th. Touring in April and more recording and shows! We gotta keep it moving! Any shout outs? Hells ya, To all the tricks, trick ass marks, mark ass tricks. Also Check out facebook.com/rahrahrahrecords and support Kayavibe, The Attack and The Supervillains!! TH EFLUIDMAG.COM 50
