WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FLUID

Summer is here. It’s hot, rainy, and the days are super long. This time of year always brings out the best in me. When I was younger, summer time was all about the beach. The boys and I would talk to girls constantly, surf every wave that came our way, and caused all sorts of trouble during the night hours. From taking the boat out to the island, to house parties. Summer is the best time of the year. With all those ladies and nights out, summer time can get crazy, but growing up we could always count on the older guys to be there for us. That is how New Smyrna is. The older crew paved the way for us. I can’t tell you how lucky we were! They could have been jerks to us but instead they made us part of their crew. We had the best group of friends always heckling each other, and seeing who could meet the most girls from out of town. Although we had it good, the icing on the cake was that the older generation had things wired and showed us how to have a good ole’ time. When you get older, things change but for the better. For me, summer is now an opportunity to spend time with the ones that I love. In my mind, it is Father’s Day that marks the beginning of summer. It is a time that I spend with my family and remember my Dad, who passed away when I was 12. My mom, Eugenia is where I get all my positive energy and manners from, but it’s Dad who always watches over me and is my lucky charm. You better believe his favorite time of the year was summer in Florida. Every chance we had, the Forand family, was on the boat or at the beach. He was a sailor and his passion for the water was inspiration for my brother and me. I dedicate this Summer Issue to my dad, Paul Forand, for giving me the love that I have for the ocean. Picking the cover is never easy, in fact it’s usually the last thing we decide on before we go to print. This issue was no different. We wanted something CENTRAL FLORIDA fun, something summer and someDINING thing that represents everything we STORM CHASER believe in at FLUID Magazine. After ALEK PARKER looking through dozens of cover SHAWN WATSON worthy submissions, I got an email PROFILE from Transworld Surf Senior Photographer, Seth Stafford. This fisheye water shot of Alek jumped off the screen and made our decision easy. And who more deserving of this summer issues cover then Alek Parker? No better way to see nature... uninterrupted.

In a town where everyone knows practically everyone, lies a new business that is flourishing like a hawaiian plumeria. Paddleboard New Smyrna is located at 177 North Causeway and they opened their doors on March 1st of this year and have not looked back for a second. Proud owners Erik and Jackie Lumbert, parents of two young children Kire and Olivia have taken this new venture all in stride. The goal is simple, to get more people of all walks of life on the water in a healthy and active way and to feel the stress free exercise. They want to foster the community element of SUP fun. “It’s what I do with my family”, says Superbowl MVP Drew Brees Paddleboarding for offseason cross training.

Erik, who has lived in Smyrna his whole life. Erik graduated from NSBHS in 1996, he then went onto major in Communications at DePauw University and graduated in 2000 finding his way back home to NSB. Erik understands that relaxation and fun mix well and this is the feeling that SUPing will give you. Paddle Board NSB offers, SUP rentals, Tours, lessons and sales for what you need and want. Recently they upgraded the equipment to tandem and single kayaks, which from what I saw look like a ton of fun. The first time I visited Erik at his shop I was immediately drawn to the estuary behind his shop which makes for a safe and environmentally friendly paddle. The estuary has dolphins and manatees living and playing daily that make the SUP paddle that much more enjoyable. On offer as well are SUP Fitness Classes and Yoga

Individual instruction with every tour or rental

classes that can get you in the shape you want in a healthy fun manner. YOLO and Wavejet propulsion are a huge part of Erik’s business, with every model available from YOLO and Wavejet demos through out the summer. You are bound to find something fun at Paddleboard NSB.

Hi Alek, what were you doing the minute before you started the interview with us? Watched the latest Tropical Updates to see if Debby is going to be a storm worth filming as the first episode of the Hunt 2012. But I am still undecided...

Where was your last trip and what did you do on that trip? I was recently a

part of a trip with Sanuk Footwear to Peru where we went as ambassadors for an organization called Operation Smile. This trip was one of the most significant and beneficial trips I have ever been a part of. Surfing was the secondary focus as we were scheduled to spend 5 of the 10 days in the hospital as volunteers helping with the Children as they went through surgical procedures to fix their cleft lips and cleft palates. We played, blew bubbles and comforted as

15 17THEFLUIDMAG.COM THEFLUIDMAG.COM

we bonded with these children ages 6 months to 8 years old. Our mission was to help make this very scary situation a pleasant journey for these little humans as we used our individual outreach to raise awareness for Operation Smile through our personal Social Media outlets. Along side Operation Smile and the most rewarding journey I have been a part of, we managed to find very fun surf with Sanuk Team Riders, Matt Meola and Torrey Miester, which will be displayed as a feature article in the Transworld Surf Magazine and a video documentary by Sanuk. Oh yeah we also squeezed in a short one day visit to Machu Pichu, another mind blowing and life altering adventure... www.operationsmile.org Every $240 dollars donated will change the life of one child. Be a part of saving a child’s life and donate to Operation Smile.

How does a normal day in your life look like? Currently I am glued to the tropics

along the Eastern Seaboard highly anticipating the right storm to kick off The Hunt 2012 as I wake up here in California. There has been a good run of really fun Summertime surf here around LA so I have been surfing a

trips to the Taking dentist suck... ton, which has been a really nice change from the usual Florida Summer. Im really enjoying the culture and excitement of living in such a diverse and vibrant place. I can walk to the most amazing food, stores and local watering holes while brushing shoulders with the most eclectic grouping of humans in one small town. Surfing, meeting new people and emerging myself in culture has been in my everyday as of lately.

How did you get started with surfing? I feel as if I were born in to a surfing

lifestyle. My Dad and Uncles were all surfers and I was raised within the surfing culture. As I grew older my mom’s brother, Uncle Scott, was the one that was there to teach me everything I could want to know about surfing as a grom. Frequent paddles down the inter-coastal to strengthen my paddling and duck dive practice in the pool, you had to get creative growing up on the Gulf Coast of Florida. He was a sponsored surfer as a teenager before joining the Navy so I learned everything from him. My mom was my number one supporter as she moved us to the East Coast to Melbourne beach so I could start ESA at age 11. That was the defining “move” that changed my life forever. A series of serendipitous motions preformed by the perfect people is how I got my start in surfing.

What publication first showcased a picture of you? I’m going to consult with the

mom to figure that one out... Most Likely ESM

Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to becoming a pro surfer?

It takes a village to raise a surfer...haha. There were many very important humans that played such important roles along my journey through grom hood. I made a resume with my mom halfway through my first year of competing at age 11. On my 12th birthday I went to the surf expo with my resume in hand and my mom by my side. I would ask her to wait around the corner as I asked who I needed to talk to for a sponsorship. I first talked to O’neill and out walked Garth Tarlow. After that surf expo I walked away with sponsorships from O’neill, Legend Eyewear with Steve Brillhart and Block Surf with Larry Block. That was the initial boost that set everything in motion for me. Dave Settgast with The Groove Tube was my first surf shop sponsor shortly after. There were so many others that I would take up the rest of the interview if I named them but I am very thankful for each and every one of them.

Seems like every Hurricane season the whole East Coast tunes in and wants to know where and what Alek is doing. Tell us a little about your program and how you got started chasing storms? Well it all started with my love for growing up in

Florida and how if you want to get surf you have to follow the weather. I wanted to do more than just wait for the storms to come by Florida during Hurricane season. I wanted to tell our story of how we would track down the best surf from them. It started out with an Idea called In Pursuit, which became our first webisode, which evolved in to our first Surf movie “The Best Laid Plans”, which led to my first season of The Hunt in 2008. Now it is an annual project that I put so much passion, time and energy in to every season. I love every moment because it reminds me why I am the surfer I am. It’s not about the best waves in the world, it’s about finding the best surf on the East Coast from each diverse massive weather system. The chase is sometime just as exciting as the reward.

You’ve made a name for yourself outside of a jersey, tell us how you went about making that happen? I discovered a passion for Producing, Directing and Edit19 THEFLUIDMAG.COM

ing the adventures we were embarking on as young professional surfers. I wanted to involve my friends and produce East Coast driven content. I learned everything I know about the production world from my mentor/business partner Jerry Ricciotti and from there I was able to branch off into solo projects such as The Hunt and create a platform to market myself from.

Every surfer seems to have a camera man too these days. Does the digital-times demand more work from pros then, let´s say, five years ago? It is a completely different world then 5 years ago. I remember being on the fore front of watching online videos transition from Trailers for up coming DVD’s to full length shorts and full surf section edits. You have to be your own PR agent, your own production company, your own social media guru, and pretty much your own team manager for yourself as a brand/image... It is crazy how much more money, time and effort goes in to being a young professional surfer these days. But, it is also a very exciting time where everyone can be in the front row watching the most progressive surfing in the world unfold before your eyes via computer screen or iPhone.

Do you have any nightmare stories to tell which have happend while you were at work? ( hold downs, robberies, airport fees cause of overweight board bags, etc)

We almost got wiped off a two lane road by a semi on a interior road of Iceland this year after the van spun off the road on ice. It’s a long story but it was the scariest moment of all of our lives... (Myself, Brett Barley, Philip Goold and Chris Burkard)

What is your favorite place to shoot and surf? The first half of this year I spent a

lot of time in the North. Nova Scotia in January, Iceland in February and Norway in March. I really enjoyed traveling to surf in the Arctic. It is such a foreign thought for the majority of surfers and it has some of the most beautiful and pristine landscapes I have ever seen on this planet. The experiences and adventures aligned with great surf, snow mobiles and reindeer made the Arctic one of my favorite places. Oh, NO CROWDS!!!

Your worst trip ever? I hate to sound cliche, but I cant really talk as if any trip I have had is a “worst trip ever”. I have had some not so easy times on the road but at the end of it all, I’m traveling the world to surf. It is a concept that to this day I still find ridiculous. We as surfers have the most freedom and are fortunate enough to live a lifestyle that dreams are made out of. To be anything but humble and thankful for every moment, good or bad, would be a shame... But taking trips to the dentist suck... Do you have a few tips for the groms who want to go in the same direction like you? If you love it, do it!!! Be happy and be yourself. If you want to try something

new, learn it, try it and love it. Anything is possible in life as long as that’s what you truly want to do. Visualize and do whatever you feel is necessary to get there. It is a lot of hard work but this is the time of your life, just as every moment was and will be for the rest of your life. Don’t waste time, just live.

SURFERS FOR AUTISM On July 28, Surfers for Autism will stage their eighth beach festival of the 2012 surf season at Lighthouse Point Park; a season in which the local nonprofit organization has gone global. The inaugural Hunter Connect/Surfers for Autism event took place in Australia on Nobbys Beach February 11, and the season ends on Carolina Beach in Puerto Rico mid-November. The organization’s first domestic event of the season took place the weekend of March 31 on Deerfield Beach and was without question the most well attended event in the group’s five year history. The Inlet-area event has grown by leaps and bounds and has outgrown its initial Winter Haven Park home. For the first time, SFA will host the Ponce event south towards the Inlet and the young shredders will enjoy one of the East Coast’s best waves. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the locals will witness a level of stoke eclipsing that of any pro contest or surf festival. The event is dedicated to a man who dedicated his life to public service and was the ultimate philanthropist: Ponce Inlet Chief Wayne Lurcock. “From the inaugural event continuing to last year, this event has consistently been one of the biggest and most well-attended events we host each season. The event will not be the same without Wayne, who was instrumental in providing untold resources to our cause, and we know this community will come out to honor his legacy” said SFA President Don Ryan. Entire communities come together to lend the support and resources necessary to make these days happen. For most of the families attending SFA events, days like this just don’t happen very often. Due to lack of awareness and acceptance, awkward moments are all too common, and many families begin to isolate or withdraw socially. “Once these athletes hit the water, there is no differentiating one child from the next in terms of abilities and stereotypes begin to shatter,” said Ryan. SFA supports no agendas, takes no sides and has no political

FLUID EVENTS

views whatsoever. The only thing that matters is pushing kids into waves and bettering families and communities. Children and young adults on the autism spectrum and with related special abilities spend the day being pushed into waves by expert instructors, and with no fear of mocking or awkward stares, families can let their guard down and enjoy the moment for a change. SFA events transform individuals; SFA events transform families; SFA events transform entire communities. While the day is not just about the surfers, they are certainly the focal point. Parents of first time attendees often arrive on event day with a bit of trepidation, which is certainly understandable. For years (or longer), these parents have been told time and time again what their child cannot do. The word cannot is not in the SFA vocabulary, and the proof surfaces time and time again. “There are no words to explain how incredible you all are for working so tirelessly and generously to give our special children such a fun and exciting day. Andrew said it was his best birthday ever,” said Jodi Rogoff. The SFA Facebook page is flooded with comments echoing Jodi’s sentiment the day after events. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You made some great memories for my kids today: It was a blast out there watching them do things I never thought they would,” said Melissa Feldhaus.

Fluid’s Perspective: As you walk up to The Curl in Downtown Disney® Pleasure Island, you can feel the energy circulating in the air. There are lights everywhere you look and the place is jamming. Throughout the store they have all the essentials for your lifestyle needs. From clothing to footwear, eyewear to accessories, The Curl has the best selection around. They draw big crowds because they carry the right brands and have an amazing store. Everyone always says the most important thing in retail or real estate is location, location, location. We agree, but what really makes the difference and keeps people coming back is customer service at The Curl. From the second we walked in the door (before they knew we were from Fluid), The Curl Staff members were beyond friendly and outgoing. Their management and employees were constantly catering to our needs and knowledgeable in the products they sell. Catering to consumer is what differentiates them from other stores. Industry Insider Info: The Curl is known throughout the industry as one of the elite retailers on the east coast. They have an amazing selection of everything, but what really separates them from all other stores is their massive selection of sunglasses, watches and footwear. Kyle Lantier, South East Sales Rep for Fox Clothing, told Fluid Magazine, “The Curl is a perfect representation of our lifestyle in a truly worldwide marketplace. Sammy has defined all odds and established The Curl as a premier surf shop in Disney®. It’s very evident that everyone involved has their finger on the pulse of this industry, and their rigorous dedication to providing the customer with a unique, personal shopping experience is unparalleled.” We also reached out to Terry Claudio, one of the best sales representatives in the surf industry. JOSH TUCKER Josh Tucker was in an accident on his four wheeler the morning of April 22nd. He hit a bump, lost control and struck a tree. He has a number of broken bones including his ribs and back, but there is no paralysis. He has a severe brain injury and on a level of brain trauma 1-3 (3 being the most severe) Josh is a 3. This means he will have a very long recover, approximately 12 months for us to really know what effects he will have and how his brain will repair itself. BUT may we say after saying all that, Josh CAN and we believe WILL be our miracle and have a full recovery!! It will be a long road but he is a strong boy! We just ask that you continue to pray for him!

What I really like about late rounds is that you get to flex your prediction muscles, and draft a flyer while telling the whole room that this guy will dominate next year just to make yourself feel better about the pick! You should draft a DEF, but just don’t draft a kicker. At this point, your probably drunk, and grabbed a dud somewhere. Sober up, and in a few days drop the mistake, and add a kicker... RECAP: • Make a plan • Go with your gut • Buck the trends • Get your guy • Don’t draft a kicker • GET DRUNK • Hit me up on Sunday for starters!!!

FLUID ADVENTURES

CENTRAL FLORIDA BY | BRYAN FORAND

BACHELOR PARTY | CENTRAL AMERICAN STYLE Growing up in a small coastal community, you really get to know all the classic characters. I've been so fortunate to have the group of friends that I have, and they are definitely like family. The weird thing about New Smyrna Beach is that we don't care how close in age we are. It's like we are all on the same wave length, all we want to do is heckle each other and win at any sport we play. It doesn't matter what we are playing, winning and telling your friend "nice try buddy" is what we consider a good time. My game plan was to invite a huge crew and probably have seven or so friends that could break away from work, family duties, school, or whatever excuse they would make. To my surprise I was blown away, eighteen of boys pulled together to make my bachelor party the trip of my life. Most people do the same old thing for their bachelor party, but I wanted to break away from it all, relax, and get some Pacific Ocean power. As we all board the plane something totally random happens that I never saw coming. As I boarded the plane, two stewardesses asked me if I was Bryan Forand. My first instinct is my friends are playing some kind of joke on me, but the stewardess proceeds to tell me that the pilot wants to have a word with me. He will come out after they seat everyone to talk to me. I didn't know what to think, this is a late night flight and people have been buying me lots of drinks all afternoon. Right as the flight is about to take off, the pilot comes out and tells me he heard from one of

my friends I was flying down. The guy was super cool and even gave a shout out half way thru the flight claiming for all the Smyrna boys to have fun on the bachelor party. It was a rowdy flight to say the least, sorry to all the people on the flight that were on a different program. Beach breaks can be a shocker when they are big, and you've been working way more than you've been surfing. The first few days of the trip were all about making the bomb drop and pulling in to a perfect barrel or getting axed, having a kinked neck for a week. There was too many people on this trip to let sets go unridden, every big wave that came thru had one of the boys screaming go!!!! There were waves I wanted nothing to do with that I paddled into and got some great views and others that punished me!! We had the same routine the entire trip: wake up at dark, surf for 3 hours, eat breakfast, surf a couple more hours, and then the activities started. We would battle all day long. Golfing into corn hole targets, chipping at random coconut trees, bocce ball, snook fishing tournaments, cards, horseshoes, and anything else we could think of. Oh yeah and we consumed so much liquor that the Rum and Beer trucks had to come back for multiple visits!! Honestly the random BS games were as much fun as the good tubes. It was the trip of a lifetime. Everyone came back in one piece, and I couldn't have asked for a better group friends to come along!

Smyrna Beast. Seems like you guys have diverse backgrounds in music, how’d you’ll come together? It was all

timing. We were all looking for a new project with more intensity and sustainabilty. We share the same goals and influences and thats what really brought us together. What type of music do you’ll make? If ya dont know, H.O.T.B is a five peice metal band, with blistering lead vocals elements of Maiden-esque metal, thrash, southern rock, groove based riff metal, thats mostly cautionary tales of drinking, drug abuse, and revenge. aka SWAMPCORE. Tell us about the strangest thing you all have ever done together? We’re a relatively new band, so haven’t had that much time to indulge in debauchery. What do you think about the music scene in Central Florida? Well we support original music around these parts, so that being said, places like Beachside Tavern, Filthy McNasty’s, Tayton O’Brians, and Cafe Da’Vinci’s, to name a few, are doing a good job with supporting our scene and not succumbing to the mediocrity of cover bands. Who or what has been the biggest influence to your music? Pantera, Hank 1-2-3, David Allen Coe, Lagwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iron

Maiden, BTBAM, Mastodon. We know you guys dropped a new album, give the Fluid readers some insight of what to expect and where we can pick it up? Well the Name of our debut album is “Ramblin Whiskey Blues”

and it’s all about Women, Whiskey, Killin, and Hell. You can pick it up at Atlantic Sounds, Itunes, or at our shows. Tell us something you love about Central Florida? Biker gangs, Hurricanes, shark bites, gators, sand in your butt crack, sunburns, all the prostitutes at 3am on US1 between Beville and Mason, snow birds, oxy/roxy-zombies aka pillyVanilly’s. On the real tip we just really enjoy the beach. Any last shoutouts? Who loves you guys? Everyone who comes out to our shows, our familly and friends, Ill Creature Productions, Skendy Photography, Deuterman Productions, Billy Chapin, Bob Metcalf, and Matt Johnson @ Revelation Studios. LAND OF VOLCANOES AND WAVES This April, the beginning of the surf season in Nicaragua, I was lucky enough to be part of a celebration of life, that was to take place on the Tola Riviera coastline at Iguanas Beach. Also known as Hacienda Iguanas. As a group of surfers and photographers we gathered at the new NSR House at the invitation of the owner of Vestal Watches, Johnny Gehris. Our first morning, the NSR infinity pool appeared to drain straight into Playa Colorados, with pumping head high barrels. Down the beach at Panga Drops, you could see the A frames and a surfer laying down a long arcing cutback. The mornings can be

Some of us drank beer and some of us drank wine but we all danced and partied like rock stars. It’s easily done in San Juan del Sur. I would be remiss in writing this story if I did not note Craig Murray’s dancing prowess. On the dance floor at the Black Whale, Craig was a legend. Remarkably, the next day, we all made a full recovery. It was our last day in Nicaragua. In an empty cafe by the sea, we all gave Johnny thanks and then satisfied our souls with gallo pinto and Lizano, one last time. We drove to Playa Hermosa. Some of us spent the day surfing, some of us lay in the hammocks, searching the horizon for the mountains of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, taking respite in the shaded huts and preparing our bodies for the long trip home.
