NOTE FROM THE

EDITOR

We made it! We are past our first year and it feels amazing. The craziest thing about it all is how fast a year has flown by. I remember just over a year ago when we were laying out our first issue, and we were pretty much clueless. What a big difference it makes to have this first year behind us. We have confidence, wisdom, experience, connections, respect from the community, and a huge following now! A year ago it almost seemed like a bad idea to start a magazine in Central Florida. The economy was really bad and it seemed like it couldn’t have been a worse time. We assembled an all-star team and started to hit the streets hard! From Flagler Beach to Melbourne Beach and all over Orlando, we made a huge push! It wasn’t easy by any means, but we made a huge impression. People now know who we are and love the creative publication that FLUID Magazine produces each issue. Now when I talk to businesses I don’t have to give them the whole spiel about what FLUID Mag is. Usually they are already stoked and want to get involved with the magazine. I feel so blessed to make it where we have. It’s not easy by any means, it can be overwhelming for sure! What really keeps me going is seeing how much more potential we have. Each issue gets better, progression is good and that is what we strive for. We are constantly arguing about what we should feature and what should get cut. It is good though, it just means we are trying to showcase all the positive topics in Central Florida and are passionate enough to fight about it. I guess what I am getting at is FLUID Magazine has been such a great experience. From all the great people I’ve met, to all the life lessons. I couldn’t be any happier to be the editor of FLUID Magazine! EDITOR | FOUNDER | BRYAN 7 THEFLUIDMAG.COM

with BRYAN HEWITSON

Years Repping? 8 years Brands: Sanuk, Stance, Island Daze, Ocean&Earth How many miles do you log each year on the road? About 40,000, give or take a mile or two.

What do you spend all your time in? (aka: type of vehicle) Toyota Sienna How did you get your first sales representative job in the surf industry? Mr. Rob Willis. Speaking of which, my thoughts and prayers are with him and his wonderful family as he recovers from a major surgery. God speed my friend, and thank you for getting me ‘off the roof’! Looking forward to seeing him happy and

as getting spit out of a Pipeline barrel :) I really do enjoy working with all the accounts I work with, and I feel very fortunate to be where I am and almost fully transitioned.

Everyone claims the economy is hurting, have your brands been hit hard the past few years? As with any economy, any brand, any business, anyones

the man upstairs, my family, my wonderful children, and all the great friends that I have made along the way have played a huge part, I’m sure!

What are your predictions for the surf industry for 2013? (trends, what’s hot) I see Sanuk’s ‘Sidewalk Surfers’ footwear and ‘Yoga Mat’ footbed style sandals doing really well in the coming year at surf retail locations throughout Florida. The new designs and superior quality/construction that Stance socks are coming out with will be a big hit also! As far as Private Label goes, Island

Worst part of your job? I try to put things in perspective, and when I think about all the really troubled economies, and the various parts of the world that are serious struggling, my job doesn’t really have a “worst” part, relatively speaking.

Here at Fluid, we are claiming that you are the top pro surfer/rep in the industry! Does that make you blush? What other reps give you a run for your money? If you didn’t say that to everyone, I would probably be beet red right about now. Seriously, thank you for the kind words, and I really value your mag’s opinion :) As far as other reps that surf really well, there is actually quite a few. I would hate to leave any of them out, so i am not going to try to name them all. They know who they are....

How was the transition from pro to rep? Pretty big change from living the dream to day dreaming on the road. It hasn’t been that bad actually. Obviously I wouldn’t mind it if I were still traveling the globe to the best waves in the world, and just surfing all the time. But, I still get to travel a bunch with repping, even though it’s just to make my business partners more money around the state, which feels equally as good

estly, but if I must pick just one, well then I can’t.

Favorite surf shops in Central Florida to visit? They are all unique and favorable for different reasons, again, there is no way I could just pick a couple....

What is the best advice another rep has given you? It came from my mentor, good friend, and ex rep himself, Mr. Rob Willis. Although he has told me so many useful things, the one thing he told me that has always stuck out in my mind is - “If everyone knows your business, you have no business!”

Any shout outs? All my family, friends, business partners, sponsors and supporters along the way! I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL, and thank you ALL so much! And also a big thanks to you all at FLUID magazine for putting out a quality magazine for a great price! THEFLUIDMAG.COM 10

TRAVELS

What is Casa Marbella? Casa Marbella translated in English means “beautiful beach house”. We designed our “beautiful beach house” to not only be our home, but also a boutique style hotel. Located on the beautiful Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in the town of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, Casa MarBella provides its guests an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean with comfort, style and security. It is a place where visitors can listen to the howler monkeys and parrots in the surrounding jungle while finishing off the day with one of the spectacular sunsets known to the area. Casa MarBella is an independent, family-owned hotel where we strive to make our guests feel at home. Who we are? My name is Jim Bubaloni. My wife, Stephanie and I own and operate the hotel. We are from New Smyrna Beach, FL. Before moving to Costa Rica in November of 2006 to start the “Costa Rican chapter” of our lives, we worked in two separate fields. Stephanie was an elementary school teacher and I owned and operated a landscaping company for nearly 20 years. Our six year-old daughter, Naia, was born in Daytona Beach, Florida but has been in Costa Rica since she was two months old. So I guess that basically makes her a “Tica” (Costa Rican). Why did we choose Costa Rica? I originally came to Santa Teresa in the mid-nineties solely for the surf. I had heard a couple of rumors of great waves and no crowds in this area, so I decided to check it out for myself. To my pleasant surprise, I found the rumors to be very true. The surf was indeed consistently good and uncrowded to boot. I had found a surf paradise. Since there were very few options to stay at the time, we would camp out on the beach for literally weeks/months at a time. It started with just a couple 23 THEFLUIDMAG.COM

tents, but over a course of about 2-3 years these few tents seemed to multiply exponentially. Pretty soon it was like a tent city. The demand for rooms grew as did the demand for places to eat. Over the next few years the town seemed to explode with development. Cabinas and restaurants started popping up all over the place. The property that Casa Marbella sits on was purchased in 1999 with the thought of having my own little slice of paradise for a vacation or retirement home. After witnessing how fast other beach areas in Costa Rica had developed (ie. Jaco, Tamarindo, Quepos) and noticing some of the same development trends happening here, I had a gut feeling that Santa Teresa would soon be following in similar footsteps. Therefore, the decision was made to build a hotel. Since the very first time that I came to Costa Rica as a kid in 1987, I loved it. Now I saw an opportunity to make a living down here. It was my dream. It didn’t take much to convince Stephanie and before we knew it we were planning the logistics of the big move from Florida to Costa Rica. Although the building process proved to be more than a challenge, the project was completed within a year and a half and we were able to open our doors in October of 2007. Since then the business has continued to grow, we have forged friendships with people from all over the world, and we have had the opportunity to live and work in a place that many consider to be PARADISE! We invite you to visit Casa MarBella the next time you are looking to get away from it all. Many adventures abound in the surrounding areas: surfing, yoga, canopy zip-lines, horseback riding, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, snorkeling, and waterfalls.

My phone rings at 9pm. On the other line I hear music, bottles clanging, and people laughing. “Hello?” I ask. “Hey, It’s Lindsay Perry, what’s up? Let’s find a house party tonight and charge it!” she replies. “Hey, are you still gonna have time for this interview tonight?” I ask. “Of course!” she says with enthusiasm. “Let’s meet at Taytons, on Flagler!” “For sure, see you in 30” she says. Two hours and five Guinness later the princess arrives. She is full of apologies and excuses as to her lateness. I attribute it to being a woman; I would later learn that it is just Lindsay Perry. We engage in some small talk and I attempt to begin my interview. The recorder is blinking and I begin firing away with questions. After a few beers she begins to open up and I think I am finally starting to understand the mystery that drives and defines this girl. She has lived a fuller life than most people twice her age. Hearing about her world travels and life experiences helped me understand who she really is and what distinguishes her from everyone else. From being an ambassador for Billabong, to dropping a new album in January, Lindsay is truly living a dream. Inspired by some difficult personal loss and good friends, she will continue to thrive in this industry because of her passion for life and people. Here is everything you ever wanted to know about Lindsay Perry, except for what we can’t tell you... THEFLUIDMAG.COM 26

How did you become a brand ambassador for Billabong? I launched Lindsea.com in June of 2010 and June 1st, 2011 the team manager for Billabong girls, Megan Villa, stumbled upon it and contacted me. Same day, we spoke on the phone & they asked me in for a meeting the next day. Went in and a week later we finalized the contract & they sent me to Europe! So very stoked on the Billabong Family. Big thanks to those guys. Being in the spotlight with your sponsors and career, how much have you been traveling lately? I’ve been on the go a bit lately. I was in California for 2.5 months, doing meetings & such. Recently started a new relationship with Spy Optic and Osiris Shoes. Came back a few weeks ago & went to the Bahamas for Billabong, returned from there and I’m currently sitting in Orlando, FL, to work on my album for the week. How much time do you spend on the computer, updating all creative things you are putting out there in the web world? Quite a bit, which becomes taxing. I do a lot of design work and video editing. The Sandy swell had to be one of the longest weeks of my life. Everything from the forecast leading up to the swell to the Daytona/South Beach commute multiple times that weekend, I think I only slept a few hours every night. I charged down to Palm Beach with Rob Snow, and my brother for the first day of the swell, before being directed even further south to Miami from the numerous texts/phone calls. Something special happens between East Coast surfers during Hurricanes like this. We all become so tight knit and really get the word out for reports. After pulling up to the arena of South Beach and seeing more surfers in the lineup than I have ever seen before, and more beautiful girls than I have ever seen in one area, I immediately became a spectator for an hour or so. Hanging on the beach ended up being a great idea because as the tide filled in the waves just got better. I paddled out a little before noon after most of the crowd had dissipated, and the waves were firing. I watched so many amazing waves roll through that day. The only way I can think to describe the wave is a France or Puerto sandbar on a more compact level. That wave allows you to take off deeper than any beach break I have ever surfed. I watched too many people take off from behind the peak and just get completely piped across the beach. Heard more best wave of my life claims go down than ever. Was that really Florida?? Biggest forecast I have ever been around to see, and the waves in South Florida were every bit of World Class. I am so happy to have been a part of it!

DEVON

I had never surfed in South Florida before. Okay, that’s a lie… I once surfed about an hour long session at Delray Beach somewhere around five years ago, and lets just say I was not particularly impressed (no offense to anyone from Delray). So when I saw what would become Hurricane Sandy brewing in the Caribbean, with a forecast track taking it north along the eastern seaboard, my first thought was to go north, not south. It’s no secret that the Outer Banks is where you go to harness a little more Atlantic energy than most other East Coast beaches typically absorb. Little did I know that in the coming days I would witness a large portion of the southern part of my home state transform into a double over head, freight-training, left hand point break.

TRESHER

Now, I have to elaborate on my last comment a little more. I’m usually quick to call bullshit on claims like “the inlet was firing” or other such east coast embellishments. Don’t get me wrong, I love my home and readily admit to a lot of very fun waves on the east coast, and have even witnessed a few days that truly were “firing.” But lets not pretend like we live in a vacuum and don’t know what’s going on at other surfing hot spots around the world. I’ve seen my fair share of world-class waves, and a chest high day with offshore winds at the inlet doesn’t stack up real well against 10-foot Pipeline. It just doesn’t. With that being said though, this swell blew me away, and far exceeded my expectations with the caliber of surf it produced. After several days of religious checking of the surf and weather forecasts, it became clear south, not north, was the answer. Local legend, Dave Chambers was at my house the night before South Beach started firing, adamantly declaring we had to leave pre-dawn the next morning. All indications from every forecast I could find were that it wouldn’t get good until the next day. Chambers didn’t care what the forecast said, he could just feel it. I wasn’t exactly amped to wake up at 5:00am the next morning and drive to Miami just to wait around until it got good a day later. I tried to compromise and said I would leave mid morning. His response, speaking in riddles as he often does, was “I’ll already be at Bert-Fish by that time.” That’s the local hospital in New Smyrna. My brother and I stared at him with puzzled looks on our faces. “Bert-Fish?” we asked. “Yeah, I’ll have a stroke if I’m still here at 10:00am.” So there it was, he charged south on I-95 in the pre dawn hours while I slept, convinced he was jumping the gun. I was wrong. When I woke up that morning South Beach was already big and offshore. I drove down with Chad Erickson and Kris Kerr later that morning, and spent 4 days in south Florida, starting with South Beach and working our way north. While South Beach was good, what really surprised me was the next day a little further north. We were on our way to Pump House when we got a call from Nils Schweizer that it looked really good in Boca. We pulled off I-95 and met our friends and fellow tube seekers Nils and Trin Schloot at the beach. None of us could believe what we were seeing. Trin had surfed there with a friend the previous night, but the storm had strengthened and the interval between waves had widened causing the swell to get bigger and thicker through the night. It was legitimately double overhead with some sets coming through that were much bigger than that. It wasn’t just the size that was impressive though. The power behind the swell was immediately evident. The entire ocean was flowing like a river from north to south, carrying with it boardwalks, small boats, and anything else that previously resided on the beach or in the dunes. Every wave that came through was absolutely unloading on the outside sandbar a few hundred yards off the beach, many of them as wide as they were tall. And they weren’t peaks that were able to achieve this by condensing all their energy into a small area, but rather lines you could see coming from a mile or two up the beach, funneling right past us and continuing on their way south, holding their size and power the entire way. Numerous places along A1A had standing water anywhere from knee to nearly waist deep from waves washing over the road during the night. We looked on in awe as we gathered reports from various people both north and south of us in an attempt to capitalize as best we could on this rare opportunity. It seemed everywhere nearby was doing something similar to what we were seeing. Big, heavy, fast, tubing lefts. After a few minutes went by our crew had grown a little more. We now had Nils, Trin, Chad, Liam Michelbrink, Caleb Johnston, Trin’s buddy who’s name escapes me, and myself surfing, along with Nick Crobaugh and Kris taking photos. After a little deliberation, we decided our best bet was just to paddle out in Boca and do a long drift. For me, no matter how many times you’ve seen big surf, even though you know what you’re looking at and how powerful it is, what you find when you actually get in the lineup is on another level intensity wise from what you think you see on the beach. In other words, it’s difficult not to underestimate the power of the ocean even when you’ve been there before. This day was no exception. I’m sure we all had visions of driving through huge tube sections all day long. I know I did. What really happened was we spent the rest of the day paddling until our arms were about to fall off, taking some beatings like nothing I’ve ever experienced on the east coast, battling a raging current, and getting a few great waves, though being swallowed whole by most of them. We knew the drift was bad, but didn’t anticipate drifting 3 miles in half an hour our first session. After that reality set in, we made our way to Deerfield Beach, where the current was a little more manageable and we surfed there until dark. All we could talk about afterwards was how many unbelievable waves we could have ridden if we had a jet ski at our disposal. We all got a few good waves paddling, but the reality is that there was so much water moving that the waves were very hard to get to. I’ve always liked the idea of paddling much more than using a ski to get waves. I like being more intimate and one with my surroundings, not using technology to conquer them. However, on this day, the ability to cover ground on a jet ski and get in the right spot would have made all the difference. In fact, after my first session I felt so under gunned on a 6’0” quad that I rode a 7’2” my second session just to paddle against the current and gain a little easier access to the waves. So in that sense, it was somewhat bittersweet. We did the best we could paddling though and had the privilege of witnessing wave starved south Florida briefly transform into a world class surf spot. On one final note, keep in mind this all happened while the storm was several hundred miles to the north and east of our location, and moving away. I can only imagine how heavy it was in the areas Sandy made landfall.

RED BULL NIGHT RIDERS The Red Bull Night Riders competition is one of the most unique tow-at competitions on the coast. This year, six of Florida’s top surfers had to deal with strong winds, rip currents and choppy conditions, all in the dark of night. In spite of the rough conditions, over 2,000 spectators braved the rain and winds to cheer on the Red Bull Night Riders as they pushed their limits to pull off their best trick. This is the third time the nighttime tow-at event took place at Flagler Beach, as a part of the 13th Annual Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic presented by Nautica.

PHOTO: ROBERT SNOW / RED BULL CONTENT POOL

“The fans are really dedicated to this event.”

One of the highlights of the event was the addition of local favorite, Brandon Hoffman. It was the first time in the three years, a local surf hero made the elite roster of competitors. The crowd was both thrilled and proud as the Flagler Beach local took to the waves in the toughest conditions the event has seen to date. “I’m amazed that so many people fought the weather to cheer on their favorite rider,” expressed host Will Tant. “The fans are really dedicated to this event.” The winds were high and the lights were bright as each rider went full force soaring into the night sky. Each exhausted and elated surfer gave everything they had in the harsh environments of the night. In the end, Red Bull Night Riders rookie Evan Thompson

brought home the win to his family, a legacy from his older brother Cody Thompson who won the event last year. Evan solidified respect as an aerialist, winning the event with his back and front side rotation. “I was patient,” stated winner Evan Thompson on dealing with the challenging conditions. “I wanted to prove that I could go big.” With rough conditions, Evan Thompson posted a winning score of 6.5 out of a possible 10 points. Completing the roster for the evening were Jesse Heilman, Blake Jones, Oliver Kurtz, Jake McQuire, and local surfer Brandon Hoffman. “Of all the surfers on the east coast, these guys were the best picks,” said veteran judge Gordon Lawson. “Evan was the man to beat, and his clean consistency took the lead.”
