GHOSTRIDER LEGEND The legend of the Ghostrider all begins with one man, a Scottish fellow by the name of William Fer nie. According to the legend, Fernie was prospecting in the Elk Valley during the 19th century when one day he came across a young Ktunaxa woman. Fernie noticed that the young woman wore a unique piece of jewelry, a necklace made of several shining black stones. Being a prospector, Fernie immediately recognized the stones as pieces of coal. Intent on finding the source of the coal, Fernie decided to negotiate with the girl’s father who also happened to be a chief. The two men struck a deal. If Fernie would marry the chief’s daughter, then the chief would reveal the location of the coal. After learning the location of the coal deposits, Fernie backed out of his end of the deal and refused to marry the young Ktunaxa woman. This, of course, angered the chief greatly. Legend has it that in his rage, the chief placed a curse on the valley, promising fire, flood and famine. In the ensuing years, Fernie saw more than its fair share of disasters. A tragic mining accident occurred in 1902, during which 128 miners lost their lives in an explosion

6 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

at the Coal Creek mine. In 1904, a fire wiped out Fernie’s business area in a mere four hours as a fire that started at Richard’s General Store quickly grew and spread. Fire struck again in 1908, this time taking less than 90 minutes to obliterate all but 16 homes at the far west end of Fernie as well as the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Co. offices. After each of these devastating events, the resilient citizens of Fernie rebuilt, only to be hit again by a flood in 1916 when the Elk River overflowed its banks, giving more credence to the Ghostrider legend. Whether these disasters had anything to do with the curse, we’ll never know, however the belief was so strong that in 1964, the City of Fernie requested that Chief Ambrose Gravelle and members of the Ktunaxa nation perform a curse lifting ceremony. Although the curse has been lifted, on sunny summer afternoons you may see the shadow of a horse and rider on the face of Mt. Hosmer. Legend has it the rider is the young woman, and the shadowy figure beside her is that of her father, both forever in limbo, watching over the valley.

GOLF

From the members of Fer nie Golf Club Being a member of Fernie Golf Club gives me limitless golf which makes me happy as it is one of my favourite sports. It gives me a sense of camaraderie by playing with my friends and making new friends by being a part of ladies and senior clubs. As a member we get a better rate for tournaments. As a member we can book tee times a week in advance. In the restaurant we get a discount on food. In the pro shop we get a discount on golf merchandise (clubs and equipment) as well as clothing. As members we get package deals for range passes, lockers etc. We get a vote at AGM and have input to club operations and electing board members. Patricia Moore

A family trip to the driving range? It may be a surprise, but I see many families, including mine, choosing to spend a couple of hours driving balls, putting, and enjoying a meal at the clubhouse. The Fernie Golf Club is a perfect place to do this with its relaxed environment, friendly staff, and club members that encourage newcomers to the game. My family has found the Fernie Golf Club to be a “community within a community” where everyone likes to say hello and ask about how your game is going. Our son collects golf balls so many members would pass on a colourful ball to add to his collection. The members at the club have a spirit of camaraderie that revolves around the game they love that they share with adults and kids alike. Another outing our family enjoys is to play five holes. This is a great way for kids to get started in the game because it only takes an hour to play the course. Each family member can play from a different tee box that suits their ability which makes it fun for everyone. We learned early on that our son did not like to lose his golf balls in the water (remember his ball collection?), so we always packed water balls that he didn’t mind losing. We learned what our son liked about the game (hitting his 6 iron, scoring, and riding the golf cart) and found ways to make the game fun for him. See you at the course! Christine Stein

Membership at the Fernie Golf Club has been a high priority for me for more than 20 years. There are many financial benefits of membership for those that love the game of golf however, for me it is much more. As I walk the fairways on a warm summer day I often pause to take in the surroundings, and when I do I am overwhelmed by feelings of peace and serenity, followed by a sense of belonging and family. Over the years I have met and played with numerous individuals, some unfortunately are no longer with us, but I carry their memories with me every time I set foot on the course. Membership offers the ability to make new friends and cultivate ongoing friendships developed over the years. Whether they are playing partners, pro shop personnel, grounds maintenance staff or clubhouse staff, I cherish them all and can’t imagine my life without them. I have always loved contributing to the golf community in Fernie, committing 14 years to the board of directors and continuing to help where I can has made me a better person and I am extremely thankful for having the opportunity to be a part of something that is truly amazing. Rod Gray

Since I can remember the Fernie Golf Club has been a part of my life and something I look forward to opening every year. I have a lot of great memories from the course and feel lucky that we have such an awesome club in our small town. It’s great to see how the club has evolved and grown over the years and to see the youth programs and incentives they have put in place. The staff at the course are always so welcoming and accommodating. It’s the prefect place to get together with friend for a round or take the kids to hit some balls. For me the Fernie Golf Club is an extra special place as that’s where I met my wife. Murray Pask

GREEN FERNIE

With the climate changing right before our eyes, visitors and locals alike are thinking of ways to travel and live more sustainably. Whether you’re a full on eco-warrior or just like to know that communities are doing their best to be eco-friendly, you’ll be happy to know that Fernie has a plethora of green initiatives throughout town to keep this mountain paradise as natural as possible. Just this year, Fernie instituted a brand new recycling program that complements the existing door to door pickup program. Residents and visitors alike will notice yellow recycling bins placed throughout town as well as blue bins in every driveway. On top of that, the Fernie Transfer Station implemented a further reaching recycling system that accepts 76 additional types of items that the yellow bins do not. The recycling depot is a great place to get rid of all of your recyclable waste, including items like styrofoam, glass, plastic bags and plastic wraps. The transfer station also has a Reuse-It centre that allows residents to drop off items they no longer need and pick up new ones. If an item isn’t accepted at the transfer station, chances are it can be dropped off at the Bottle Depot, which on top of accepting bottle returns, also recycles a variety of electronic devices.

12 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

The idea of reusing and recycling isn’t unique to waste though. Fernie has several thrift and consignment stores that give shoppers a sustainable approach to fashion. Since the fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to climate change, having secondhand options in town is a huge plus for the planet and for the pocketbook. Check out the Salvation Army Thrift Store located on Second Avenue, for a great selection of lightly used items. Gear Hub also has a consignment section, allowing people to pick up high quality used gear at a reasonable price. If buying secondhand isn’t really your thing, fear not. There are several stores in town that offer eco-conscious brands and products that are brand new. Edge of the World carries the Tentree brand, which uses eco-friendly materials and plants 10 trees for every purchased item. The Green Petal carries a huge selection of eco products ranging from reusable bags to metal straws and lunch kits. Freyja stocks several Canadian brands in their boutique made by manufacturers that are committed to sustainable business practices so you can

feel good about your new purchases.

are also a few nonprofits in the Elk Valley dedicated to saving the planet. Wildsight is responsible for several incredible green project in our community, including the Community EcoGarden. The garden provides gardening opportunities and community education through sustainable organic projects throughout the summer.

Retail shops aren’t the only ones getting in on the eco action though. Several coffee shops and restaurants in town are actively working to reduce their waste in any way possible. Big Bang Bagels has reusable mugs and asks you to stir your coffee with uncooked noodles. Freshies also welcomes reusable mugs and is constantly making efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Wildsight also spearheads the Apple Capture program, an innovative way to collect fruit that would otherwise go to waste. When fruit is left to rot on the tree at the end of the summer, it can attract bears and other wildlife so the apple program helps to connect fruit lovers with fruit trees. Fernie Fresh Food Share is also doing their part to reduce food waste by collecting food from grocery stores and restaurants that would otherwise go to waste and sharing it with those in need.

Island Lake Lodge has also been recognized with several awards for their green initiatives and is even a certified sustainable tourism partner. They make massive efforts to be sustainable about their energy use, waste management, ecosystem management, forest management, wildlife management and more. The lodge has a comprehensive plan addressing all of the ways they can mitigate their impact on the beautiful natural environment around them.

Fernie is a town actively trying to do their part for the planet in so many ways and there are a variety of programs and businesses keeping Fernie green.

Brooks Creek Ranch prides itself on being completely offgrid leveraging solar panels and a microhydro power system while offering intimate and luxurious accommodations. While initiatives by for profit companies are fantastic steps in the right direction, there

DISC GOLF

The fun-filled intersection of frisbee and golf In James White Park, interspersed between overarching cottonwood trees and slithering pathways, sits an 18 hole disc golf course. Similar to traditional golf, disc golf is played on a nine or 18 hole course, with baskets used to catch flying frisbees. The holes generally range from par threes to par fives, with rules similar to that of regular golf, such as four players per card and tee boxes to mark starting lines. The East Kootenay’s first 9-hole basket course, the Ricky Glenn Disc Golf Course, was built in the mid 90s. Since then, disc golf has been climbing in popularity as a favourite summer day past time in the Elk Valley. Fernie’s own disc golf course was established in 2004 by local disc golf professional Serge Gosselin. It stands at 4800 feet long, and contains Mach 3 baskets in the front nine holes, and DISCatcher Pros for the back nine. For those still fine tuning their skills, the course offers 13 holes under 300 ft long, and the rest between 300 and 400 feet for more of a challenge. Other disc golf courses in the area include the Cranbrook Disc Golf Course, the Sparwood Disc Golf Course, the Deerborne Disc Golf Course

14 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

in Elkford, as well as a course in Wycliffe Regional Park. In terms of discs, there are many different types used for shots of varying technique. Types of discs include fairway drivers, distance drivers, and utility mid-range discs and putters. Fairways differ as well, with some offering challenging features, and others accommodating the various flight patterns and distances of discs. When starting out, experts recommend practicing throws in an open field before throwing in parks or wooded areas full of obstacles such as trees and pedestrians. For those keen on showing off their skills in competition, there are many disc golf tournaments that occur throughout the summertime. The East Kootenay Disc Golf Club runs many Professional Disc Golf Association tournaments such as the Gunshot PDGA C-Tier event in Elkford, or the Lizard Range/Fernie Tourney PDGA C-Tier event in Fernie. Any questions regarding information on discs or other technicalities can be addressed to your local disc golf club, as disc golfers are notoriously keen to share their expertise.

For more information on disc golf, visit the Lizard Range Disc Golf Course website at Ferniediscgolf.com.

ON THE WATER

How much do you know about the Elk River? Where does it start? Where does it go? Winding and flowing its way from the Petain Glacier (Elk Lakes Provincial Park) all the way to Lake Koocanusa, the Elk River takes on every form of water movement. It begins as shallow lakes, turning into a tight stream, then to a friendly winding river that you see flowing through the town of Fernie. All of a sudden, near Elko, it transitions into a raging, white water frenzy, where only the bravest of white water paddlers will venture! Beyond the raging frenzy we find the happy medium, exhilarating whitewater; this is where commercial white water rafting is offered. All of this variation captured in about 220km of water, as the Elk River arrives gently in Lake Koocanusa. During the last few months the world as we know it has been altered. How quickly and easily things can be taken away from us, without much of a warning for its drastic change. I hope for you, it has given you a greater appreciation for those things that were considered normal, everyday occurrences. Maybe, simply realising the place we choose to live in is spectacular. This summer, I challenge you to discover something new about the river you likely catch a glimpse of every day. Appreciate the beauty of the Elk River and the exhilaration it can bring you through a journey floating downstream. Tubing, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) and canoeing

from the North Fernie Bridge to James White Park are great summer activities. The Elk River Alliance has created a map of the Elk River that has a wealth of information. You can purchase one from the Fernie Information Centre or the local Fly Fishing Shops. If you feel your life has been lacking some excitement, take a white water rafting trip! Perhaps you feel you need to ease back into the excitement with a gentle, scenic float. Are the fish luring you in? The Elk River is known for its Native Westslope Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout. After checking the fishing regulations, try your luck and throw a line in. If all of this sounds a bit much, or you can feel the cold water from your living room, simply take a day to walk or bike along the river banks and watch the Elk River flow by. Who knows, you might surprise yourself, forget the water is cold and jump right in! You don’t need to travel to be a tourist. Luckily for us, we can be tourists in our very own beautiful town. Our local river outfitters would love to have you on board. As we’ve covered, the Elk River truly has a piece that would appeal to just about anyone. So, the challenge is on! Schedule in a day, on (or near) the water this summer and learn something new about our waterway. Possibly you’ll learn something about yourself too!

See you on the river. Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

PAWSIBILITIES

Chances are if you’re walking around Fer nie on any given day you’ll run into at least one four legged friend. Dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds can be seen prancing around absolutely everywhere in town. Well behaved pooches on leashes are welcome in most outdoor and public places in Fernie while there are plenty of off leash options for when the doggo really needs to stretch their legs. Between the endless trails and mountain paths and the plethora of outdoor, off leash areas, Fernie is every dog’s very best daydream. One of the best off leash options in Fernie can be found at the north end of Annex Park. Since there’s not a ton of signage at the park, it’s often overlooked. Although there’s no fence surrounding the park, it is bordered by the river along one side meaning it’s the perfect spot for dogs who love to frolic around in the water. Parts of the river are shallow enough for a quick swim, while the middle of the river can move quite swiftly so owners are urged to be aware of the hazards. Another great spot to let the pooches run is next to the Fernie Aquatic Centre. This park is also not fenced or signed but you’ll be able to recognize it by all the happy dogs running free around the area. This spot has

benches and shade and water if you become tired just watching fido run laps. Another great option is the Fernie Railyard Dog Park, which can be found in the green space between 4th Avenue and 13th Street, just past the train tracks. This park is a multi phase project with upgrades and fencing being added over a five year period. It currently has paved paths perfect for a stroll with your pooch. Although there are many options for dogs and owners to have off leash fun in town, there are also plenty of dog friendly trails outside of the city limits. Remember that not all trails are off leash and it’s important to check before heading out for the day. As a general rule of thumb, multi use trails in the area allow dogs to be off leash.

The only outdoor places you can’t bring your four legged friend are the school grounds, Rotary Park and Ridgemont park, since these playground areas are for children and not dogs. Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

FISHING One of the reasons our little part of the Kootenays is such an attraction is the exceptional fly fishing in the area. by Paul Samycia The Elk River and its tributaries are well known for their gin clear waters, that wild native, Cutthroat trout and Bull trout call home. It is these glacial and spring fed waters surrounded by majestic Rocky Mountains that lure anglers from around the world for a chance to hook a Cutthroat on a dry fly or get a big Bull trout to bite their streamer. The Elk River itself flows through the towns of Elkford, Sparwood and Fernie. It then goes past Elko and flows into the Koocanusa Reservoir. This path is conveniently followed by Highway 43 and 3 making access relatively easy for a quick fish. Tributaries such as the Fording River and Michel Creek are a great choice for those who would want to get away from sound of traffic. For the more adventurous, a trip to the Bull River or a hike into a high alpine lake can make discovering new waters that much more exciting. Keep in mind, while fishing the Fording River that the high level of selenium has taken a toll on the fish population in that river. It would be best not to consume any fish from that stream and release all fish caught in the hopes that the population recovers.

18 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

Anglers will need a B.C. freshwater license for fishing any lakes, and if fishing rivers in the area, an additional classified waters license can be purchased online or at a license vendor in Fernie. To simplify fishing regulations as they can be quite complicated, anglers who practice catch and release using single barbless hooks and no bait will be compliant with the regulations. Fishing regulations can be found at local fly shops or online at Gov.bc.ca and follow the links to fishing regulations. For young anglers just getting into fishing, a tour of the Bull River trout hatchery is a great way to spend some holiday time. Located just past the town of Bull River on the way to Fort Steele, the hatchery conducts tours of the facility and also has a kids’ pond. Partially funded by angling license sales, the hatchery and its staff are a great source of information and they have some excellent fishing related programs throughout the summer. The grounds around the hatchery are quite pleasant and make for a great picnic spot. Early season on the rivers will depend on run off but going to a local fly shop for information and the latest flies and gear is a must. The shops often offer guided trips, lessons and gear rental if needed. [O] Mike McPhee @mcphoto99

ISLAND LAKE LODGE

A trip to Fer nie is not complete without a visit to Island Lake. Located just 14 kilometres from Fernie, the road up to the lodge will have you winding through ancient old growth Cedar and Douglas fir trees on your way to one of the most spectacular settings in the Canadian Rockies. HIKING

You wake up in the mor ning just as a pink and pur ple blush bursts across the sky, mixing with the dark hues of the mountainous ridgelines surrounding you in all directions. You brew a pot of coffee or tea as you’re cooking up a hearty breakfast that’ll sustain you for a day of adventuring. As you enjoy your morning meal, you pore over trail maps until you find that one trail that calls your name and makes your feet itch. Now that you’re powered up for the day, you fill some water bottles, make a lunch and throw it in a backpack along with all of your other essentials. You pull on some shorts or leggings, a sweat wicking shirt and a sweater before lacing up your trusty old hiking boots. They’ve seen their fair share of miles trekking through mud and grass and gravel and grime but you love them all the same for all of the beautiful places that they’ve taken you over the years. Maybe you have a four legged or a two legged friend that you invite on your

22 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

impending adventure. With all of your gear and a heart full of excitement, you jump in your car and start driving. You down the last dregs of your coffee as you park at the trailhead, gazing at the blossoming blue sky above you and thinking to yourself, what a wonderful day for a hike. After double checking all of your gear and doing a quick stretch, you let yourself take that very first step. Your hiking boots crunch into the gravel and your breath hitches with anticipation of what’s to come. The trail is mellow as first, climbing slowly and gently through trees and forest. It lets you adjust, get your legs moving and heart pumping before the real climbing begins. You revel in this quiet, one on one time with the natural world. The only sounds around you are the wind rustling the leaves, the birds singing their songs and your boots crunching on the trail.

Without the distractions of a computer or a phone or a tablet, you let your mind wander. You notice how green and alive the grass around you is, swaying gently in the wind. You notice each and every breath that comes into your body, propelling you forward and keeping you going. You notice how sweet it feels to have the warm summer wind caress your face and bare arms. As you delight in the feeling of just being outside, the trail begins to climb. Your breath comes harder now and you’re aware of the strain in your thighs and calves and shins. The trees begin to thin out and the rocks become more prominent. You lift your boots over crisscrossing and tangled tree roots, jutting stones and packed soil, all while delighting in the feeling of going up, up, up. Suddenly, you break free of the tree line and you pause for a drink of water and a short break. As you pull your eyes away from the trail in front of you, you inhale sharply. You can finally see the summit, your destination. It seems impossibly far away but you have confidence in your body to get you there. You shoulder your pack and start climbing again, feeling alive and motivated and at peace with nature. As you get closer and

closer to the summit, you start hiking harder, eager to get to the top. Before you know it, you’re there. On top of the world. And that’s when the real magic happens. You know the feeling. The deep sense of inner peace, accomplishment and downright exhaustion that accompanies a mountain summit. The moment when you look around you and it’s nothing but grassy hills and rocky peaks and dense forests falling away below your feet. The feeling when you look above you and there’s nothing but wide open skies and gently rolling clouds. Your lungs heave for air, your calves burn with fatigue and your heart flutters with joy.

That’s why we hike, isn’t it? For those feelings when we get to the top. To source out new trails use local author and avid hiker Terry Nelson’s Fernie Area Hiking Trails and Natural Plant Compendium available at the Guides Hut and Polar Peek bookstore.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

There are so many great options to choose from in Fer nie for an amazing experience on the bike. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced rider there is an area and trail for you. If you are new to riding, the Montane area is ideal. You can easily access the trail network from town on Coal Creek Rd. Alternatively, park at the pull out by the barn on Coal Creek Road and follow the adaptive trail on a gradual grade up to the Montane Hut. Enjoy the spectacular views at the top. Return on the same trail having some fun on the corners. For intermediate bikers, Swine Flu is a classic. Again it’s easily accessible from town with a lovely bridge crossing Fairy Creek just before the entrance, or if you choose to drive, park at the Fernie Visitor Centre. This newly revamped climb has 30 switchbacks to keep you on your toes. Be sure to take a breather at the top and enjoy the awesome view. Be aware that paragliders take off from a platform just above the bench. The descent is a blast with a number of large bermed corners to keep you rolling. Please do not bring your four legged friend on this adventure as the land is also tenured out for cattle grazing.

Finally, but certainly not least, for the advanced rider Hyperventilation is a must! There are a few ways to access the climb. A favourite is to take the power line, pass Montane Hut and continue climbing up to Roots. Continue straight up past the Hyperventilation sign, where the work begins. There is a short steep section towards the beginning then it levels off with a number of switchbacks to navigate. There are three descent choices off the top. My recommendation is Today’s Special! To access it, stay right following the Castle Rocks sign and stay right again at the next intersection. There is a bit of a rocky washed out section near the beginning of South Castle. Watch for a sharp right hand turn where Today’s Special begins. There are two line choices further down, but all are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. At the bottom stay right connecting to the Elk Valley/Great Trail. There are some fun rollers and corners along this section. It spits you out at the Roots intersection. Return back down to town the same way or continue to enjoy some additional trails in this area. Be sure to have fun out there and play safe. Happy Trails, Fernie Trails Alliance

fruit trees that might attract wildlife to your property, vacation home or campsite.

As residents or visitors in Bear Country it is our responsibility to prevent conflict between people, bears and other wildlife in town or in the back country. It is much easier to keep human food and other attractants away from wildlife in the first place, than it is to teach bears, cougars, deer, skunks and rodents to stay away from unnatural food, such as garbage that they have learned to enjoy.

On the trails: Be prepared and expect to encounter wildlife anytime. Make noise to warn wildlife of your presence, watch for signs of wildlife, fresh tracks and scat, carry bear spray and know how to use it. If you encounter wildlife, back away slowly and leave. Never approach or feed wildlife.

In town: Keep all garbage inaccessible to wildlife until you dispose of it responsibly and secure, clean or remove anything else such as birdfeeders, dirty BBQ’s and unmanaged

Please report human/wildlife conflict to the Conservation Officer Service 24-hour hotline at 1-877-952-7277 For more information on keeping communities’ safe and wildlife wild visit www.wildsafebc.com

A Local’s Perfect Day Ursula Schroeder Ur sula Schroeder was drawn to Fer nie for the same reason that many other people are drawn to this idyllic mountain town. Ursula wanted to spend a ski season somewhere in Canada and after arriving in Fernie, she said, that was it. Schroeder, originally from Switzerland, arrived in Fernie in 1974 and hasn’t looked back since. Not long after arriving, she secured a job at the ski hill for the winters and eventually started working at the golf course in the summer time. “Those two jobs just worked for me and it became a kind of lifestyle and it’s been very good,” Schroeder reflected on her years in Fernie. In the winter, you can still see Schroeder’s smiling face at the ticket office at Fernie Alpine Resort, making her the longest standing employee at the ski hill. Although she retired from her job at the golf course a couple of years ago, Schroeder certainly isn’t idle during the summer months either. Her perfect summer day, she said, could

28 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

take three different forms. That being said, every perfect day begins with a hot cup of coffee. After that, “hiking, biking and golfing is pretty well what makes my day,” Schroeder stated. Option one for her perfect day is a long hike with friends on a beautiful sunny day. “I love to be on top of the mountains or doing a ridge walk so that would be a perfect day.” Although there are tons of amazing trails to pick from in the area, Schroeder certainly has a few favourites. She noted that her favourite hike is Goldilocks although she also loves hiking the Three Sisters and said, “of course Heiko’s Trail is always beautiful too.” “One version of Heiko’s trail that I love is going up Mount Fernie and then taking Rocky Road to Windy Pass and then ending up at Island Lake.”

Another of Schroeder’s perfect days also puts her at Island Lake, although with a different mode of transportation. Mountain biking is a passion of Schroeder’s and her favourite ride is the Lazy Lizard trail to Island Lake. She likes to start the day by gathering a group of friends and biking up, having a lunch and a beverage and then biking back down. Years and years ago, Schroeder started a group called the Wombats, which according to her was the first ladies mountain bike group in the area. “We would do big, big bikes at a time when a lot of the Fernie trails weren’t built yet,” she recalled. “We just went out and found trails or went on a lot of logging roads. We did big rides back then but now I’m more into the shorter ones...I like to take it easy and just smell the roses.” Which brings us to Schroeder’s final version of the perfect summer day in Fernie. “I love golfing so it would be a day on the golf course with friends,” she said. “Play a round of golf and then enjoy the beautiful golf course deck, which is the best deck in town with the best views for sure. Finally, have a lunch or a beverage on the deck.”

The golf course is a special place for Schroeder, who worked there for years and became an integral part of the team. On top of various other duties, Schroeder said it was her job to look after the flowers on the course, calling it her “pride and joy.” After either hiking, biking or golfing with her friends all day, there are several ways that Schroeder likes to wind down at the end of the day. “Happy hour is always good,” she quipped. “If it’s thirsty weather then I like a beer on the deck.” Sometimes, she noted, she just likes to sit in the bright, life-giving sunshine and read a good book. Often, she’ll grab dinner with friends or stay in to cook a meal after a long day of adventure. Schroeder can also be seen volunteering at the Wednesday night socials in Station Square, enjoying the live music and community company.

No matter what she chooses to do for the day, Schroeder faces the summer time with open arms and a smile on her face.

ARTS & CULTURE

Despite being rich in outdoor activities, Fer nie is home to a number of local artists who bring colour, music, and culture to this vibrant town. A meander down Second Ave will exhibit art in many mediums, including vivid landscape paintings, stunning nature photography, delicate jewelry, woodcarvings, and much more. Looking to bring home a slice of Fernie? Head into the Fernie Arts Co-op, a volunteer run creative space where the handiwork of local artists is both on display and available for purchase. Local handmade gifts can also be found at Coal Town Goods, a shop showcasing everything from jewelry to clothing that celebrates the unique vibe of Fernie. For a more unconventional shopping experience, venture over to the corner of 6th Street, where a white converted school bus sits in the summer sun. Inside is Ace Ferguson Studio, both a shop and an art studio run by Kate Moran. Open Tuesday to Sunday during summer months, some of the mobile shop’s products include macrame, beaded artwork, jewelry, and crocheted clothing. If permanent artwork is more your thing, Cryptic Hive Tattoo and Art Theatre is a short walk away, designing killer tattoos and showcasing all sorts of abstract art on their walls. Also downtown is The Arts Station, a renovated CPR rail station turned into an arts centre that hosts live music on its

30 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

outdoor stage, and shows inside its theatre. With a new exhibit each month, make sure to check in on their ever changing showcase of art. Once there, take a gander at the sculpture sitting in front of its doors. Made out of steel and limestone, the creation was crafted by local artists Michael Hepher and Paul Reimer, and pays tribute to the tragic Great Fire of 1908. Just around the corner from that is the Fernie Miners Walk, resting on City Hall Grounds. An educational exhibit pertaining to the history of mining in the Elk Valley, it has both interactive posts as well as a collection of 300 bricks honouring the names of miners and families that supported the project. For an equally impressive blast into Fernie’s past, amble into the Fernie Museum where you’ll find all sorts of historical exhibits. The culture doesn’t stop there. Be sure to stick around for the many creativityfueled events that roll through town, such as craft fairs, film festivals, and markets. Not to mention, Fernie hosts the Wapiti Music Festival, where Canadian indie bands gather to serenade the audience in a picturesque park. Or better yet, attend the Wednesday Concert Series for live music and refreshments on balmy nights! With no shortage of art and culture in this small yet creative town, there are surely days of jawdropping, hip swaying fun ahead.

Fer nie Chamber of Commerce We’re in this together Summer in Fernie is certainly going to look a little different this year as our community adjusts to the “new normal” brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. We all want summer to be enjoyable for everyone as we respect the provincial health guidelines and physical distancing, while exploring our town’s outdoors, activities, shops, restaurants and attractions. When you arrive in town, staff at the Fernie Visitor Information Centre will be available to help answer any of your questions. We know you want to help keep Fernie safe and we want you to know that Fernie is doing everything possible to keep you safe as well. Our local businesses have gone above and beyond to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Much time, effort and money has been spent on measures such as sanitizer stations, plexiglass screens on counters, the use of masks, and directional signage to facilitate physical distancing. Front line staff have been re-trained in new COVID-19 protocols. Please phone ahead to

local businesses if you wish to learn more about their current operations and new procedures. In return, our local community asks visitors to Fernie to help us keep the curve flat with COVID-19. Please adhere to physical distancing of at least six feet when interacting with people outside your bubble. If you have shown any symptoms of illness in the last two weeks before your trip to Fernie, please stay home and reschedule. Most local operators are offering flexible and compassionate cancellation policies.

Above all, lets be kind and patient with each other. We are all in this together and there a lot of new things to get used to. Lets have an awesome and safe summer. We got this Fernie!

ELKFORD

When travel restrictions in British Columbia are lifted, your next great adventure begins where the road ends. At the end of Highway 43, you’ll find the district of Elkford. A hidden gem of the East Kootenay, this high-altitude Rocky Mountain municipality caters solely to the adventurous in spirit. Without a traffic light or shopping mall in sight, its rugged mountain ranges, iconic Canadian wildlife and thousands of hectares of untamed wilderness are an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true. Welcome to Elkford Elkford is among the most remote communities in British Columbia. Built in 1971, as a homestead for mining industry workers and their families, Elkford also boasts the amenities, recreation facilities and luxuries of a much larger city. This idyllic

32 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

mountain hamlet provides approximately 2,500 residents with postcard-perfect views, beautifully maintained community parks, a nine-hole golf course, hiking and mountain biking trails, world-class fishing, emerald lakes and endless acres of wilderness to explore. Wilderness is at the core of Elkford’s identity, and wildlife is often sighted strolling down the streets. Wildlife native to the region include grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, moose, lynx, wolves, wolverines, foxes, cougars, elk and deer. More bighorn sheep inhabit the district of Elkford than any other place in North America, and wildlife photographers will be pleased to find them dotting the cliffs on the edges of town. Destination: Isolation Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, there are plenty of ways for locals to get outside and play tourist in their own town, all while adhering to the orders and directives of regional and Provincial health authorities. Lace up your boots and leash up your dog! Elkford contains over 30 kilometres [O] Tasha Chorneyko

of scenic hiking trails. Beloved local trails include: Bare Hill Lookout, the Boivin Creek Peace Trail, Lost Lake and Lily Lake loops and Josephine Falls. More of an adrenaline junkie? Experienced climbers and seasoned backcountry hikers delight in summitting the craggy peaks that surround town, such as Wapiti Mountain and Grizzly Peak, and hardcore mountain bikers enjoy the sublime single-track that snakes through the Elk Valley’s subalpine terrain. Whether you are hiking, camping or backpacking this summer, we ask that residents practise physical distancing, stay close to home and follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics. Before heading into the backcountry, always plan and prepare for hazards, emergencies, wildlife and extreme weather conditions. A Slice of Mountain Paradise If relaxing against majestic mountain backdrops is more your speed, Elkford also provides more laid-back outdoor pursuits. Landscape photographers will recognize Elkford as the gateway to some of the most legendary wilderness parks in Western Canada: Elk Lakes and Height of the Rockies Provincial Parks. Each summer, their alpine meadows fill with wildflowers and explode into kaleidoscopic bloom. A two-hour drive north of Elkford, accessible only by logging roads, Elk Lakes Provincial Park showcases mirror-like lakes, cascading waterfalls and remnant glaciers encased within 17,000 hectares of breathtaking wilderness. At Mountain Meadows Golf Course, golfers of all ages and abilities can enjoy a round of golf with incredible scenery. The nine-hole layout was built on a natural elk grazing meadow in 1976. Each hole has two sets of tees, so the back nine plays much differently than the front nine. The course winds through towering spruce trees and along a bubbling

brook, where water comes in to play, and offers spectacular mountain views all the way through. The Elk and Fording Rivers are an angler’s paradise, with an abundance of Westslope Cutthroat, Bull and Rainbow Trout populating the largely undisturbed waters. Whether you prefer to fish in rivers, streams or pristine alpine lakes, we ask that you obtain a fishing licence and adhere to all B.C. and waterspecific fishing regulations. Come armed with a cooler full of cold drinks and spend a lazy summer day casting in world-class Kootenay waters.

Now is not the time to travel to other communities in B.C., but we hope to inspire our residents to explore local and our neighbours to visit in the future. When inter-community travel restrictions are lifted, we look forward to welcoming you to Elkford!

EATING OUT

One of the best parts about the summer time is finding an excuse to do any and everything outdoors. Luckily, Fernie makes this a highly accomplishable feat. Although there are seemingly no end of outdoor adventures to keep you occupied, there are also tons of places to enjoy a beer or a bite to eat, all without leaving the warm rays of the sunshine. Fernie has some of the best patios you’ve ever seen and Second Avenue becomes an entirely different place in the summer, with food trucks and patios popping up out of nowhere after the snow melts. If food trucks hold the key to your heart and stomach, there are a few in Fernie that you’ll definitely want to try out. Yama2Go is a solar powered food truck brought to you by the people at Yamagoya Sushi. They serve up quality and gourmet sushi and Japanese dishes. It’s a great place to grab a bite if you missed the boat and didn’t grab a

34 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

reservation at the main restaurant. If you’re craving Asian food then you might want to stop by The Chopstick Truck, a Vietnamese inspired kitchen that is based in West Fernie but can be found at different events and venues throughout the summer. From delicious spring rolls to vermicelli bowls and bubble tea, The Chopstick Truck is sure to leave you satisfied. Another local favourite is Cooks Cabin, a food truck known for their pierogis, poutine, and a combination of the two: pierogi poutine. This one is a huge hit with the late night crowd and can be found at community events throughout the year, as well as on Sixth Street from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. for all of your apres drink cravings. Maybe you’re looking for somewhere to get a little something sweet and savoury. If that’s the case, then Flippin’ Crepes is the place for you. They serve up French inspired sweet and savoury crepes that are sure to indulge every single one of your tastebuds. As amazing as food trucks are, sometimes

you just want to sit down and have a drink at a restaurant that doesn’t come on wheels. Luckily, Fernie has a huge selection of outdoor patios so that you can do just that.

until you forget what time it is and Yamagoya will have you so full of delicious sushi that you can’t eat another bite. All have lovely patios to help you enjoy the outdoors.

You could start your day by sipping a coffee and chowing down on some classic and unique breakfast foods at Big Bang Bagels, Freshies, Rooftop Coffee Roasters or even the Blue Toque Gastro Diner, all of which boast impressive patios.

There’s also Island Lake Lodge. If you’re up for a bit of a hike or bike, then you’ll be rewarded with some of the finest dining and mountain cuisine that Fernie has to offer. The Cast Iron Grill is also a favourite with locals and golfers alike. The deck at the restaurant has one of the best views in the valley and offers up a great place to grab a drink and a plate after your 18 holes.

Depending on where you end up for lunch, you could continue your patio tour of Fernie with stops at The Brickhouse, The Northern, Infinitea, The Loaf or The Bridge Bistro. Maybe your day took you hiking or biking at Fernie Alpine Resort. If that’s the case, make sure to grab a beer and take in the view at Lost Boys Cafe at the top of the Timber Chair. Alternatively, you could enjoy the massive patio at the Rusty Edge or pop into Cirque for a fine dining experience. As dinner time comes around, you’ll probably start scouting some place to enjoy your final meal of the day in the evening sunshine. Himalayan Spice Bistro will set your taste buds on fire with their delicious curries. Nevados will have you sipping margaritas

Or maybe you’d like to enjoy your own patio, so grab yourself a pizza. Nothing like an amazing cheesy pizza pie to fill the hunger gap left by a full day of activity.

No matter that type of food you fancy, there are innumerable options for eating out in Fernie. If it’s a nice, sunny day, then you’re sure to enjoy the many outdoor eating options that this little mountain town has to offer.

DEMOLITION DERBY

Every year, a strange hush falls over downtown Fer nie on Labour Day Sunday. The streets are virtually empty. This is because, for over 45 years, the Fernie Lions Club has been hosting the Demolition Derby, and thousands of spectators pour onto the demo derby grounds to witness a spectacle no one wants to miss. The demo derby started in Hosmer, moved to Coal Creek, then the Fernie rodeo grounds, and for the last few years has found a permanent home on Railway Avenue. As many as 5000 people come out to enjoy the demo derby which is totally run by volunteers, some of which have been giving their time since the inaugural event. From the first roar of an engine to the last backfire, this event is a great time for everyone, from drivers to spectators, young and old. The enthusiasm of the drivers is contagious, and the crowd roars with each resounding echo of metal on metal. With weight classes for all sizes of vehicles from the smallest through to the truck entries, the entertainment is non stop from start to finish, and along with having the last vehicle standing, the winners and the prize that goes with it, maybe nothing is as important as bragging rights. Grab a burger from the concession stand

36 Summer 2020 - Thefreepress.ca

and a beverage from the refreshment area, buy a ticket for the 50/50 draw, sit back and take in all the action. With the fire department on standby in case of any flare ups, the crowd cheers on their favourite drivers as metal crunches, dust flies and water spews from broken radiators. Once the dust has settled, and the final mangled wreck has been hauled out on a flatbed, the planning begins for the next year. Since 2012, the location of the Demo Derby has been on a large piece of land, at the end of Railway Avenue. If you cannot find your way, just watch for all the parked cars and follow the noise and the unmistakeable aroma of fried onions. All of the money raised by the Fernie Lions Club goes back into the Elk Valley to support those individuals and groups that need it the most, so it is a great way to support local charities and have fun at the same time. This year’s derby will be on September 6. Come out and enjoy the day while supporting the Fernie Lions Club and the community, – it is guaranteed to be a smashing good time!

What better way to experience the wild and great outdoors of the Elk Valley than by setting up camp. Get up close and personal with nature, keep a careful eye out for wildlife, and after a long day of exploring all that Fernie has to offer, hunker down by the fire and relax. Whether your definition of camping is sleeping under the stars or enjoying the comforts of a motorhome, Mount Fernie Provincial Park provides visitors with both scenic tenting and RV sites. The park is home to countless hiking trails and serves as the perfect launching pad for adventure.
