Griz Days celebrates 45th year The Fernie Chamber of Commerce is proud to host our annual Fernie Griz Days! We are committed to celebrating this tradition, commencing in its 45th year! With the ever-changing health guidelines, we hope to have a Griz Days like pre COVID-19, however it will still be slightly modified. As usual, Griz Days will be held on the first weekend of March, this year landing on March 4th, 5th and 6th 2022. The theme is “wild”, bringing out the wild animal side of the Griz. An animal print theme is fun, unique, and different than any other year. It will get locals and visitors into the Griz spirit which is needed now more then ever before. Griz Days is a multi-day festival of fun-filled family-friendly events, activities, fundraising and entertainment. It is traditionally Fernie’s biggest event, embracing the entire community and surrounding area. Griz Days celebrates our community’s winter heritage

and historical traditions, while paying tribute to the mythical creature the Griz – who lives in the Lizard Range and shoots powder snow from his musket. Some local favourite activities include the parade, fireworks, skiing with the Griz, craft fair among other exciting activities. For the 2022 installment of Griz Days, some of these key events might have to be modified or take a year off, but there will still be enough of the fan favourites to make it the party we all know and love – including Griz Pin sales for charity, and sightings of the Griz across the community.

As we transition with the pandemic, its important now more then ever to ensure a sense of community and provide interactive and creative activities for the community.

Stay tuned to ferniegrizdays.com and the Griz Days social media accounts for the latest information and announcements. We cannot wait to celebrate with locals and visitors alike this March. May the Griz deliver plenty of snow to us all this ski season!

An overview of Fernie’s history expanded their stores and offices to serve a more diverse community of 6,000 people. The Great Depression brought Fernie to its knees, reducing both population and prosperity. Only government subsidies kept the stagnant coal industry alive until the 1960’s when Japanese markets revitalized mining, and coal became once more, as it remains today, a pillar in Fernie’s economy.

Tourism in Fernie

Fernie is named after William Fernie who, alongside Colonel James Baker, was the driving force behind the coal mines located here. Starting in 1887, for ten long years they struggled to raise the money necessary to build not only the mines but also the railway needed to transport the coal to the outside world. Finally, in 1897 they achieved their goals, though effectively losing control of the company to eastern interests. The boom of the coal industry With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in Fernie in 1898, the production of coal in the Elk Valley began in earnest and the new town of Fernie took shape opposite the CPR tracks, to the north of the original settlement. People built more substantial houses, while the business community hired contractors to build estates, retail stores and office buildings. The construction of Fernie generated the development of sawmills, hardware stores, blacksmith shops and other suppliers. This first Fernie, however, did not last as in April 1904 a fire destroyed Fernie’s commercial district. Later that year, Fernie was incorporated as a municipality. Four years later, on August 1, 1908, a second firestorm visited the City and in less than ninety minutes the town was once again reduced to smouldering ashes. The resulting reconstruction (in brick instead of wood) dramatically transformed the city’s landscape. By 1910, Fernie’s businesses and their buildings were firmly established. They had

14

Winter 2021/2022 - Thefreepress.ca

Tourism has also played its part in Fernie’s past. Fueled by enthusiastic residents, Snow Valley Ski Development - a locally owned company - opened the ski hill at its present site in January 1963 and Fernie’s bid for the 1968 Winter Olympics helped lay the foundation for today’s Fernie Alpine Resort. Over one hundred years after the settlement began, the factors influencing Fernie’s early growth are still at work. Local businesses still depend greatly on mine workers’ incomes and their families’ demands for their continued existence, alongside which the ongoing development of tourism influences both the location and character of businesses in the town. Building contractors, suppliers and tradespeople have once again come to Fernie – this time to build tourist accommodations and attractions.

As Fernie moves into the future, local and tourist trade alike remain the key to its success. Explore Fernie’s History

Fernie is proud of its history and takes seriously the preservation of its cultural and built heritage.

Visit the Fernie Museum, a must-see attraction located in the heart of Fernie’s historic downtown. The museum features permanent and rotating exhibit galleries and range of family and public programs and activities. The museum is also a member of the BC Visitor Information Centre network; staff can help link the past with the present and assist you with what else there is to see and do in Fernie and the surrounding region. Visit the Fernie Heritage Library and the Fernie Arts Station, both located in heritage buildings, to learn more about Fernie’s literary and artistic traditions. The Library has a wonderful satellite exhibit on the 1908 fire.

Why you should play tourist From the beauty of a fresh blanket of snow to a comforting mug of hot chocolate, there’s a lot to love about winter, especially when you don’t have to travel far to enjoy it. Your region is full of surprises and places to explore, which is why you should spend your time this winter getting to know the areas closest to home.

By being a tourist in your own town, you’re contributing to your local economy and will also benefit in a number of ways. For example, it’s wise to stay close to home when the weather can change rapidly and road conditions can quickly worsen. Staying close to home also allows you to make the most of your time. With the sun rising later and setting earlier, there are fewer daylight hours to enjoy. When you don’t have to travel to a faroff destination, you can take advantage of the light without waking up and driving home in the dark.

Our online shopping is fast: you’ll spend more time doing the things you love. It’s easy: you can shop whenever and wherever works for you. And it’s fresh: your personal shopper has the highest quality in mind as they handpick your order.

AVALANCHES Fernie Alpine Resort is a mountain with some very steep terrain. Snow storms deposit huge amounts of fresh snow on the Lizard Range and Lizard Ridge. Avalanche conditions within the ski area can become extreme. During hazardous periods, areas within the ski area are closed until avalanche control work is complete and the skiing is safe. Be aware of closures and stay out of closed areas so that avalanche control teams can do their work. Lift pass suspensions may result.

OUT OF BOUNDS SKIING The Lizard Range surrounding Fernie Alpine Resort offers exciting and challenging terrain to the experienced traveller. There is a real danger of avalanches outside the ski boundaries. Skiers must be prepared to travel on their terms, there is no avalanche control or ski patrol rescue. The slopes are steep and the snow deep, travelling outside the boundary is recommended only for those people experienced and equipped to deal with serious avalanche dangers. CRES. TIMBERLINE

To avoid the steep trailhead, leave your car in the parking lot and ride back out to the road, turning left past the RV Parking to access the trails. Trails at Ridgemont are partially open.

At Mt Fernie Provincial Park there are several popular areas for winter riding. Phat Bastard and Red Sonja is a popular intermediate-level loop that gets frequent snowshoe and fat bike traffic.

No biking is permitted on the Elk Valley Nordic Centre and the Golf Course. These groomed trails are for Nordic skiing only.

Care of www.tourismfernie.com

Most, but not all, trails in Fernie are multi-use, and fat biking is welcome. Be respectful of the cost and volunteer effort that goes into the grooming

Trail etiquette ONLY ride in areas that allow biking. Obey all trail access and vehicle signs

Snowshoers and Nordic Skiers have right of way. YIELD to all other users when riding and ride in control; you’ve got brakes, but other’s don’t. Be friendly, polite and vocal if they haven’t noticed you coming towards them so as not to startle them on passing.

Please avoid riding when the trails are extremely soft and slushy. Not only is it’s a lot of extra effort for you as a rider, but it also leaves deep ruts on the trails, making it tougher for the next bikers. The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) ask that you only ride when you are not leaving a groove deeper than one inch. If there is a firmer part of the trail, ride there. Please try to ride to the outermost part of groomed trail, not down the middle to avoid creating grooves in skate-ski trails. Please stay out of tracksets (double grooved trails running parallel to the groomed trails), as these are for

classic Nordic skiing only. Do not ride on, over or in the classic set tracks There’s no shame in falling or walking a section of the trail if it gets technical. Please try and avoid creating craters in the trails — step off and walk along the outside of the trail, rather than the centre if possible.

Yield to motorized vehicles. Leave room for other users and motorized vehicles to pass (don’t ride side-by-side blocking the full trail). Fatbiking is not allowed on Fernie Nordic Society Trails. These are machine-groomed specifically for cross-country skiing and are clearly marked at the Fernie Golf Course, the Fernie Nordic Centre at Mt Fernie Provincial Park, and on the Montane Trails. At Montane, the trails specific to Nordic Skiing weave between trails suitable for fat biking. You can tell which are for fat bike and snowshoe use as they are designated ‘Multi-Use’.

Be respectful and be cautious of wildlife; keep your dogs on a leash and under control at all time

Snowshoeing There’s a lot going on in Fernie over winter, and if it’s proving a little too much and you fancy experiencing a winter wonderland out in the wilderness, snowshoeing could be what you’re looking for. Strap on a pair of snowshoes and you can walk through powder like magic. Dozens of trails within a stone’s throw of the center of town can lead you deep into the wintery woods around Fernie, treating visitors to peaceful silence and time for contemplation.

There’s an abundance of trails around town, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to experience the best of what snowshoeing has to offer - the chance to hear absolutely nothing at all thanks to the blanket of snow that covers the Elk Valley over winter.

Snowshoeing isn’t an exclusive activity: you don’t need to do much training to do it, and you don’t need much in the way of physical ability to enjoy it. If you can go on a walk in the woods, you can go snowshoeing. You’ll need to be kitted out given it is still the wild, and the cold, so be sure to be well prepared with all your cold-weather clothes in layers, and maybe something warm to drink

24

Winter 2021/2022 - Thefreepress.ca

while you’re out there.

There’s plenty of stores in town that offer snowshoe rental, so you don’t have to come to town fully kitted out.

If you’re after ideas on where to go snowshoeing, the Visitor Information Center is the place to go. There you can find up-to-date maps of all the trails around town. If you fancy doing some research before you ask, look into trails in the Fernie Provincial Park, on Mount Proctor near Fairy Creek Falls or the Fernie Alpine Resort. There are also Facebook groups dedicated to the sport that are Elk Valley specific.

If you don’t want to get too serious, the trails in the Ridgemont area to the southeast of downtown are easy to travel on- so really you don’t have to go far to enjoy a fantastic snowshoeing experience.

Committing to Safety On and Off-site At Teck, safety is a core value and we believe in everyone going home safe and healthy every day—even outside of work.
