The Gulfport Extended Mobility Service (GEMS) through the Senior Center has resumed limited, essential transportation services like grocery store runs and medical appointments. Any Gulfport resident 55 or older, or residents with a disability, can take advantage of GEMS doorto-door service for a yearly membership of $70, plus $2 per ride. Gulfport’s ‘Art in the Yard’ Brings Art Sales to the Streets Margo Dalgetty moved to Gulfport from Maryland five years ago in need of a lifestyle change, and she figured an “art town” like Gulfport was the place to do it.

Now, Dalgetty is working with the City of Gulfport and other artists to launch Art in the Yard, a citywide, permit-free art market conducted through residents’ lawns on Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s following the same template as the Gulfport Citywide Yard Sale,” Justin Shea, Gulfport’s Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor, said.

The event features around 40 residential locations, with many spots hosting more than one artist’s collection.

“Beach Boulevard events are great, but as people get older it’s a lot to haul everything and deal with inclement weather,” Dalgetty said.

“Also it’s always great to see the artist get 100 percent of sales.”

A successful event could prompt Art in the Yard to become a quarterly classic between the city and the artists.

“Theoretically, this should be pretty easy,” said Councilmember April Thanos. “It’s a chance for people who might not be physically able to set up booths at street fairs, and these days it’s important that we support artists and help them make a little money.”

“When I started doing yoga 10 years ago it really got me into the flow of henna,” Brown said. “Cheesy, I know, but it really did.”

What is Lamda Legal?

National Affiliate at Stetson Aims to be a Voice for LGBT Community The Lambda Legal Society at Stetson University College of Law is now national affiliate of the National LGBT Bar Association. The group’s mission is to educate law students about LGBTQ legal issues, promote intersectional social justice and support community involvement.

“We want to connect with the community as much as possible,” said Edson Abadia Jr., community outreach coordinator for Lambda at Stetson.

Lamda is not unique to Gulfport, or Stetson. It is a national organization founded in 1973 and dedicated to “achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work,” according to the official website.

What is unique is that locals who identify as LGBTQ will now have a nearby organization that speaks up

for queer civil rights and is a national affiliate.

With six people on the board and, in the time of COVID, only around 20 to 30 people showing up to events, the goal is to expand public awareness beyond the small group of queer people who know about the program.

“I think Stetson is a very inclusive place, and we want to do our part at Lamda to stay engaged with the LGBTQ community, in and out of the school,” Abadia said.

Stetson, Meet Edson Abadia came to Stetson from the University of Florida as a gay, first-generation Hispanic law student.

“Once I got on campus, I was like, ‘Okay, where is the LGBTQ organization?’” Abadia said. “I saw the rainbow flags everywhere and felt so comfortable.”

After graduating in 2022, the Daytona native plans to work in social advocacy law.

At 10 a.m. Gulfport Little League President Trevor Mallory, a former Toronto Blue Jays player, announced the beginning of the new season; a big day for Gulfport baseball lovers.

The announcement preceded a surprise first pitch by Gabber Newspaper owner Cathy Salustri Loper.

“I’m glad to do it for these kids,” Mallory said. “I believe in giving

back to the community and providing an outlet. I know baseball kept me out of trouble and off the streets.”

Organizers note that Gulfport Little League strives to be highly inclusive, with low registration fees, no tryouts and options for all players between the ages of 4 to 14.

According to Sponsor Coordinator Bruce Donath, Gulfport Little League charges $50 to participate, while some other area leagues cost close to $120 in fees per child.

“It’s never really about the score,” Donath said in the midst of a game on Saturday. “It’s about being inclusive. I see Gulfport playing a very important role in having an inclusive league and maintaining the beautiful fields in the area.”

The 4 year olds may not be fighting for wins tooth and nail, but the pre-teens take Little League seriously.

“Sports like this can keep the kids positive, keep them worrying about their GPAs,” Mallory said. “I know it did that much for me.”

The final score of the older group’s game against Seminole was 14-6, with Gulfport nabbing the win.

“A lot of local people have baseball in their hearts, and these people [in the community] make this possible,” Donath said. “We’re so happy we have a good lease and that people here really care.”

While the Gabber Newspaper pledged to cover the cost of concessions for opening day attendees, there was a slight miscommunication. Animal Attraction

Alligator Wildlife and Discovery Center is Crawling with Life Walking into the Alligator Wildlife and Discovery Center, your eyes land on gators in their enclosures and the scent of fish food permeates the air.

Albino alligators, melanistic gators and piebald gators – those that have both excess pigmentation and a lack of pigmentation throughout their entire body – call the center home. Fewer than 20 piebald gators exist in the world.

But that’s only the beginning.

Started as a roadside attraction 10 years ago, the indoor Alligator Wildlife and Discovery Center now houses almost 250 rescued and rehabilitated animals. Located on the second story of John’s Pass, the alligator attraction serves as a nurturing environment for several species of exotic animals.

The sanctuary is home not only to alligators, but chinchillas, marine life, pigs, skunks, snakes, spiders, rodents and even a sloth. The center is open to the public for tours where guests can hold the gators and animals, and participate in a sloth encounter where they are permitted to pet Sid the Sloth.

Most of the animals at the center are either rescued or rehabilitated and are unable to venture back into the wild, Daniel Glenn, marketing manager for Alligator Wildlife and Discovery Center, explains.

“That’s one of the main things we want people to know: We’re out here as a resource,” Glenn said.

The sanctuary and education center employs an aquarist, a lizard handler and multiple staff skilled in handling exotic animals. Those exotic animals are a symptom of a larger problem.

Unfortunately, says Glenn, the pet trade creates a lot of issues for Florida’s natural environment.

“Ninety percent of what you see here also, if not higher, is going to be an invasive species to Florida, which also is a result of the pet trade,” Glenn said. “We now have over 500 invasive species in Florida between the water, the land and the plant life. So exotic pet trade has a huge,

huge, huge impact on invasive species here in Florida.”

According to Glenn, when owners of exotic animals are unable to care for them, they might take them to facilities like the Humane Society or a veterinary clinic, both more accus-

tomed to dealing with domesticated pets like cats, dogs and birds. Since those types of shelters are unable to house and handle the non-domesticated animals, often their only option is euthanasia.

“In the last year during COVID, we went up to almost 100 animals just because of people that couldn’t care for [their animals] anymore. But even more so from breeders and pet stores going out of business,” Glenn said. “So what happens when that occurs is the Florida Wildlife commission will come in, they’ll seize the animals so that a pet owner, or a pet breeder or a pet store owner doesn’t just release them into the wild.”

Due to the nature of the indoor

facility, the center keeps alligators until they grow to four or five feet before they are transferred to larger zoos and sanctuaries, according to Glenn.

In addition to rehabilitating and rehoming animals, the center is working to attain a Zoological Association of America accreditation and has adopted three husbandry programs to assist with the certification. Currently, they are breeding poison dart frogs, coral and growing mangroves.

The “Karen joke” is a reference to the fact the name Karen has become a pejorative for an overly demanding, entitled person – usually, of course, a woman. While once one of the most popular girl names in the 1950s and 60s, it has taken a decidedly negative turn. Some local Karens, however, are taking it in stride.

Karen Sherman, a St. Petersburg resident, hit the restaurant on Monday, March 1.

“I’m a middle-aged white woman that was wearing a shirt with my name – Karen – on it,” Sherman said. “I didn’t even need to show ID.” “Let’s be real: 2020 was rough for all of us, so we’re bringing in fun new campaigns,” Desrosiers said.

“This one was actually inspired by a Super Bowl commercial.”

“It was a nice treat; I felt supported,” Sherman said. “When the Karen thing happened I cringed, but I figured it was our time.”

At Boulevard Burgers & Tap House, “Karens” and restaurant management were, for once, at peace.

From February 22 through March 12 the St. Pete Beach restaurant offered a free Boulevard Burger to anyone named “Karen,” all spellings accepted.

A Vintage Book Palace

St. Pete Beach Library’s 2.1 million Renovation Honors Original Design The original, award-winning St. Pete Beach Library was built in 1969

by Glenn Johnson, an architect famous for designing the “bird cage” houses in St. Petersburg. Now, a $2.1 million renovation of the new St. Pete Beach Library is almost complete, but with a nod to the architect’s original vision. The renovated library opened to the public on March 1.

“We brought back some of the features that it had before. We are using an antique font that was on the building originally,” Betcinda Kettells, director of the St. Pete Beach Library, said. “We’ve got some mid-century modern furniture in the building. We’ve brought it back to what it was originally intended to look like,” Orange and yellow tones illuminate the vintage library font on signs throughout the building. “I think just the fact that we renewed the architect’s vision of what the library was going to look like, I think that’s really a big thing,” Kettells said. “It’s the standard idea to modernize all the buildings and we did the opposite. We took it back to its original glory so that the outside of the building, which wasn’t going to change, would match the interior, too.”

Two years ago, the staff started scouting for a temporary location to house inventory during renovations.

Since the roof had to be removed to renovate, all inventory was moved.

The library moved into a suitable spot next to P.J.’s Oyster Bar on Gulf Boulevard last March, at the start of the COVID pandemic.

“The library staff devised a way to differentiate between the stuff in the front of the house, the materials that could be viewed and checked out, and the stuff in the back warehouse section because we couldn’t find a place big enough for patrons to be in the whole building,” Kettles said.

Now, the collection is back in its refreshed vintage home.

The Friends of the St. Pete Beach Library contributed $26,500 to the library for signage, benches, bike rack, self checkout and the new book drop. The library also had $150,000 remaining in grant money from the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative, which was allocated toward the renovations.

“We did write ... a library construction grant, but the legislature didn’t fund those this year, and so

we had to come up with the money ourselves,” Kettells said. “Some of the money came from past donations to the Library Renovation Campaign and the rest of it

was provided by the city’s general funds.”

The parking lot is still undergoing renovations, which should be done in April, Kettells said.

Keeping It Clean Out There According to Gulfport Grassroots founder Wolfgang Deininger, 25 volunteers fanned out along the Gulfport’s waterfront and collected some 75 pounds of trash during the monthly Beyond the Beach Cleanup hosted by Gulfport Grassroots on March 13.

“After being rained out last month we’re getting back to it again,” Deininger wrote on Facebook of the cleanup effort.

The group hosts Beyond the Beach Cleanups every second Saturday, meeting at Shelter #4 on Gulfport Beach at 9 a.m. All are welcome to join regular cleanups, and Deininger also invites everyone to participate at this coming Saturday’s Great Clam Bayou Cleanup at 9 a.m., March 20. Programs for Local and Cross Country Cater to Seniors and Disabled

Both the Gulfport Extended Mini Bus Service (GEMS) and the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority (TBARTA) TD Tampa Bay ride3DE service have one mission in mind: Helping people get to where they want to go.

Gulfport seniors and residents with disabilities have been getting around locally with GEMS from as far back as 1974, according to Phillip Ford, GEMS Coordinator.

“It’s a reward to get to speak to a lot of different people, and gratifying to help out seniors in a time where they need it most,” Ford said.

While GEMS operates mainly within Gulfport, TD Tampa Bay crosses over five counties – Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernandez and Manatee.

TD Tampa Bay’s ride service began in December 2020, but the three-month-old program is already steadily increasing ridership in the Bay area.

According to Chris Jadick, TBARTA Communications Director, 74% of all TD trips crossed county lines.

“It’s mainly doctors’ appointments, but I had a woman Sunday who I dropped off at the Strawberry Festival in Plant City,” TD Tampa Bay Driver Warren Saunderson said. “I was raised by my grandmother, so I’ve always cared for the elderly, and now I’m making an income from it.”

Where are they going?

Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority TD Tampa Bay ride service drivers use UZURV, an adaptive transportation app to connect them with clients. Drivers use the app, and riders access TD Tampa Bay by telephone.

Who is eligible?

GEMS drives for residents 55 years and older and people with disabilities within the Gulfport area; TD Tampa covers seniors, people with disabilities and low-income users.

“TD was designed to help those most in need, whoever that may be,” Jadick said. “There is a registration process to determine those needs.”

arts Meet Pepper Raefin

The Art of Tattooing in a Female-Friendly Space

Tattoo artist Pepper Raefin founded 13 Arrows five years ago with the intention of creating a female-friendly space.

Raefin’s tattoos are all drawn by her as original works.

Though she majored in art at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Pepper Raefin never believed her career would be creative.

“I wanted to contribute to my household,” Raefin said. “I was also worried focusing my career in art would make me lose my passion for it.”

But life had different plans. In a turn of events, by her mid-30s, Raefin was living in Honolulu, working as an apprentice in a friend’s tattoo shop.

“My journey to tattooing was unexpected,” Raefin said. “I never, ever grew up thinking I would become a tattoo artist. I had this traditional idea of a grizzled old man tattooing.”

Island Beginnings Originally from Orlando, Raefin popped around the country with her husband for about 12 years.

His job required a lot of travel, and Raefin was game.

Eventually the pair landed in Hawaii, and Raefin fell into a job with the Department of Education working as a special needs teacher.

“The Department of Education had completely different goals. They wanted to save money, and I wanted to be an advocate for these kids,” Raefin said. “I spent my time in meetings, doing paperwork and I knew in my first quarter as a teacher that it wasn’t for me.”

An offhand comment by a friend who suggested a career in the tattoo industry made her scoff, but Raefin eventually reached out to an acquaintance who worked in a Honolulu tattoo shop.

She worked as an unpaid apprentice for a year, doing the dirty work and following her mentor’s lead.

Her first creation, a tiny apple, ended up on a volunteer’s shoulder.

“Working on skin is so different than working on paper,” Raefin said.

“It takes so much trust for someone to allow you to work on them because, bar lasering, the work is there forever.”

The apple turned out smooth and charming, and 2021 marks five years since Raefin moved to St. Petersburg where she now owns her own tattoo shop, 13 Arrows, at 7128 Central Ave.

13 Arrows, Always Changing The walls are covered with Raefin’s deep and textured portraits, a stark difference from her tattoo style of watercolor and “Sailor Jerry”-esque neo-traditional skin work.

“My style of painting is nothing like splashing watercolor; I have been known to have a very structured personality,” Raefin said. “My team says it’s because I’m a Virgo.”

Whether the stars are involved or not, Raefin’s preferred watercolor technique allows her to cut loose, to create without lines and boundaries.

“It makes me think outside the box, and be more free and whimsical,” Raefin said. “Whimsical is not my normal state.”

The shop is also a home base for two other artists, Jocelynn Ivy and Pinky Rae. “The ‘Me Too’ movement has come for the tattoo industry – it has arrived, rightfully so,” Raefin said.

portunities for women in the field – something she says is difficult to find in the tattoo industry.

Then came her shop manager, Svafnir Merveilles, who identifies as nonbinary.

“I became much more aware that having that attitude [of women only] might not have been as open as I once thought,” Raefin said. “I want to open up opportunities for the LGBTQ community as well, and this made me do some soul searching on if this was the best approach.”

Either way, 90% of 13 Arrow’s clientele identifies as female.

“It’s about being open-minded, and understanding the community,” Raefin said. “I’m enjoying watching us evolve.”

In the spirit of change and growth, Raefin and her small crew of queer and female artists are moving 15 minutes away to a larger shop at 4505 Park Blvd. on April 1.

A Chair-ity for All

Artists Share Inspirations for Senior Center Foundation Benefit After multiple postponements due to COVID-19, the Best Seat in the House Chair-ity Auction (with a View!) is on for March 20 during the Gulfport Third Saturday IndieFaire.

Local artists have adorned 10 Adirondack chairs and six vintage windows for auction at The Tiki Bar & Grill at 56th St. and Shore Blvd. from 5 to 7 p.m. Early virtual bidding has already begun, and proceeds benefit the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation.

To pique community interest, the Gabber asked some of the artists who turned Adirondack chairs into one-of-a-kind works of art about what inspired their creations.

Kiersty Long I was honored to be asked to design a chair for this year’s “Chairity Auction.” My chair is whimsical and fun. I have always wanted to create a painting of a baby sea turtle being hatched. As this idea came to fruition, I included a surreal sunset and outer space scene that really works well on the main part of the chair. I used acrylic paint and spray paint to achieve this look.

Judith Villavisanis I chose to create an enchanted tree spirit theme for my chair because I am drawn to nature and fantasy. The chair features a gentle old tree soul that is a home for some of Florida’s native flora and fauna. There is an inquisitive baby raccoon, Rocky, climbing over the chair; his alert squirrel friend and Screech the owl are among other woodland creatures. I have dedicated my chair to the memory of Florida Naturalist Archie Carr.

Julie Armstrong My chair is the music chair. I am always happy to hear music in the air in downtown Gulfport. My chair is a tribute to Gulfport’s love of music.

It is a little edgier than most of the other chairs and is not the typical beach chair.

Larry Busby My inspiration was one of my photographs and the song “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding. I posted it on Facebook the day they tore the old dock down. I received many replies from people sharing fond memories of the old dock. Stories like how they loved going and just sitting reading a good book while catching a sunrise. Some met and or got married there. Grandparents took them and they would spend hours climbing and swashbuckling around that beat up old pirate ship. The dock may be gone, but now you can own a memory and still sit on the old dock. An archival quality aluminum print photo is included with the chair.

What We’re Reading: Women’s History

“What We’re Reading” is a column about readers and the books they love, in their own words. In honor of Women’s History Month, we asked two community organizers to share their recommendations for a book that celebrates women.

Book: “America’s First Daughter” by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie Audiobook narrated by Cassandra Campbell

What It’s About: The story spans most of Martha’s life [Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jefferson’s eldest daughter] and includes her travels to Paris with her father where she witnesses the beginning of the French Revolution and later the War of 1812. She served as First Lady twice – first for her widowed father when he was president, and then for her husband who became the Governor of Virginia. She birthed 12 children! We learn about the building, and destruction, of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home and experimental plantation. xThe book sheds light on the politics, personalities and prejudices of the era and brings to life not only the famous historical figures, but also those who lived in the shadows, like Jefferson’s consort, Sally Hemmings, who, as it turns out, was the half-sister of his wife.

Why I recommend it for Women’s History Month: This compelling, richly researched historical novel draws from thousands of letters and original sources. Through the lens of her life, I learned a lot about one of our most interesting founding fathers and many details of the

difficult birth of our nation. Since the story is from Martha’s perspective, we also witness the many challenges of the time, particularly for women and Blacks, in a society that valued their lives more as property than as humans.

Book: “Binti” by Nnedi Okorafor

What It’s About: Binti is a sci-fi novella series that focuses on Binti, the first of her Himba people to be accepted and attend the galactic Oomza University. Her journey to the Oomza is fraught with challenges and she is forced to confront the terrifying Medusae. Binti must use the gifts of her people and her own cleverness to survive as she hurtles toward her uncertain future.

Why I recommend it for Women’s History Month: This is such a beautifully written Afro-futurist story that intertwines African cultures, the beauty of mathematics, and an incredibly vibrant female character. I love this series because of its creativity, boldness and ode to the women of color that deserve to have their stories told on such a grand scale. So much science fiction is informed by history; that’s why this series is a fun read for WHM.

obituaries Hunt, Gary, 74, of St. Petersburg, passed away on February 26 at Woodside in Pinellas Park. He came to Gulfport via his native Buffalo, NY in the early 2000s after concluding the bay area offered a combination of art, culture and amenities that would serve him the rest of his days.
