Gulfport Standoff Ends with Battering Ram By Abby Baker

CATHY SALUSTRI

After a more than five-hour standoff that involved an armored truck, a battering ram, and a negotiator, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s SWAT team arrested Gulfport man Kyle South, 34, on Friday, April 2, at 6:31 p.m. The incident took place on the 1200 block of 55th Street South. At 1:03 p.m. Gulfport police received a call from South’s neighbors, who reported that South had fired a gun into

10,000 Eggs in 10 Minutes P.4

their home. South and his neighbors had three prior disputes, two of which involved the police. On February 16, South told police his neighbors “were conspiring to have him and or family members killed due to COVID,” according to Gulfport Police Chief Rob Vincent. On March 16 police once again visited South, who claimed his neighbors had stolen packages.

Benjamin Hampshire and Savannah Servy celebrate their combined victories.

Leanara Kalchurina sprints for eggs.

On Saturday, April 3, the eve of Easter, hundreds of kids scrambled to gather the plastic eggs hidden in plain sight in the Gulfport Recreation Center field at the Hippity Hoppity Egg Hunt. The city-sponsored event was a little different this year, as masks

peppered the eager crowd. The hunt was split into four categories, for ages 0-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9 -11, and 10,000 eggs disappeared in less than 10 minutes. “We had a really good turnout,” said Recreation Center Staff Assistant Jami Rowell.

There was no Easter bunny this year, but the egg hunters with the most bounty did receive an Easter basket. “I think the kids were glad to get out and actually do something,” Rowell said.

A third incident, which the police only learned about Friday, involved South’s dog, Larry. South accused neighbors of poisoning Larry and told them “if he found out they were ‘I’m gonna kill you,’” Vincent told the Gabber. On Friday, police tried to get South to come out of the home. They also tried to call his phone to get him to come outside. South refused, instead calling his lawyer. A negotiator made a call to South, who still refused to leave his home. Gulfport Police called the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to assist with an MRAP (Mine-resistant Ambush Protectant; essentially, a large

armored car), a Rook (an armored car named after the chess piece) and the SWAT team. Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the SWAT team deployed the Rook, which smashed through South’s front window. At that point, South exited the home with his hands up, then lowered himself to the ground. PCSO deputies arrested him. Although police could not enter South’s residence until they received a warrant, Sergeant Mike Vandenberg did inspect the neighbor’s window. In between two glass panes, he found a BB, indicating South had fired his BB gun into their home. Police say South also had a rifle.

Had South fired the rifle, police would have charged him with attempted murder. Because he used his BB gun instead, police charged him with Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling. Gulfport called in off-duty officers to secure the perimeter, although PCSO had the equipment and manpower to handle a barricaded, armed suspect. Nevertheless, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who was on the scene, demurred, saying PCSO only assisted GPD. “We’re just here to help Gulfport,” Gualtieri told the Gabber. The investigation is ongoing. Larry the dog remains unharmed.

Renaissance Dad: Family TV Do they still have Saturday morning cartoons? I’m asking because it’s Saturday and for the last several hours my kids have been staring at their iPads watching YouTube videos, the silence broken only by the sounds of snacking. You’d be wrong if you’re thinking I’m going to go off on a typical rant about how TV has changed and when I was a kid we had one TV and no remote control and you had to watch whatever came on. This is well-trodden material. My kids can’t wrap their heads around the concept of television in the 1980s. To this day, if my wife and I are watching a rerun of “Friends” and we explain that we can’t fast-forward the commercials because “this show is on TV right now” our bewildered offspring will ask, “You mean this is happening now?” Yes, Ross and Rachel are currently on a break. Right now. I’d say that we have no idea what they’re watching on YouTube, but they insist on telling us. For our daughter, it’s a steady diet of videos of perky children making slime and, even worse, over-enthusiastic moms playing with toys and making crafts. It’s really a bad influence because after watching these amphetamine-fueled women create an elaborate 14-step craft project that

requires pulling a permit from the city, our daughter turns to us hoping to find the same wide-eyed excitement. Sweetie, we’re a year into a pandemic and that woman is insane. Our son has gravitated to gaming videos (you know, watching adults

play video games), as well as the latest offerings in adolescent comedy. This is big business. “Dad, did you know DanTDM has 40 million subscribers?” “Dad, this week Mr. Beast is giving away a Tesla.” Apparently Mr. Beast, a sleepy-eyed 20-something with a crew of mouth-breath-

ing friends, is making Oprah-level money filling houses with “elephant toothpaste” and “going to jail for 24 hours.” Son, if you study really hard and get good grades, you can… never mind. Son, there’s no correlation between hard work and income. The real struggle is when we attempt to watch something as a family. There is no Venn diagram that includes something that will appeal to the adults in the house and is also appropriate for children. It’s a process that usually ends up with my wife and I saying something like, “Why is ‘True Lies’ rated R?”

Whatever we pick, it’s usually torture for someone. Right now we’re in the middle of a multi-night viewing of the director’s cut of the Civil

War epic “Gods and Generals” starring... Jeff Daniels? It’s educational, right? Fun fact: The movie is the exact same length as the actual Civil War. But on many nights, we simply can’t agree on anything to watch, so our kids retreat to their corners while my wife puts on a Bravo reality show. I haven’t touched the remote in years, but for some reason everyone asks me where it is when it’s lost. Having children means that my wife and I have missed much of The Golden Age of TV. No “Game of Thrones.” No “Better Call Saul.” No “Bridgerton.” Our kids’ very existence contributes to our acceleration toward pop culture ignorance, yet they’ll complain in 20 years when we require their assistance operating our TV. And for that, we’ll punish them now with a forced binge-viewing of “The Wonder Years.”

A Community on Hold

Woodson Museum Relocation Will Require Millions More in Fundraising The the current space occupied by the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum was never meant to feature fine art. Canvases are displayed on painted-over and boarded-up windows; the temperature is never quite cool enough to safely display pieces for extended periods of time. “We outgrew this space years ago,” said Terri Lipsey Scott, executive director at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who previously served as a St. Petersburg administrator for 37 years. “We’ve never been able to receive traveling exhibits because the museum is not credited as an actual museum.” Lipsey Scott thought she’d found a solution when the City of St. Petersburg granted the museum $700,000 and 5.5 acres of land for expansion to a 29,000-square-foot facility across the street from the Historic Manhattan Casino. Now, the museum is in the midst of a $20 million public fundraising effort. “This community has the least, and we are required to do the most,” Lipsey Scott said.

center for the historically Black village of Jordan Park. Today, Jordan Park is slated for demolition, to be transformed into a 60-unit high rise apartment building for seniors. “It moves me emotionally that the people that had the least, these people in public housing, gave us their community center,” Lipsey Scott said. The $700,000 in funding, unanimously approved by the St. Petersburg City Council in February of 2021, was part of the $1 million “Deuces Rising” initiative by the city to start the development of the new Woodson. The other $300,000 was approved by the city council in 2020, and that money was poured into geotechnical testing and surveying for the site. “The city advocated for this and allocated a certain amount of money, and now we’re just in the middle of fundraising,” said Ben Kirby, St. Petersburg Communications Director. In all, the city has granted the land and $1 million in startup fees to the cause. “I’m grateful for what the city has done – I never want to sound

Redevelopment of that site will cost millions of dollars in taxpayer money. “It grieves me, but I can’t look for equality until we reach equity,” Lipsey Scott said. “We have an airport here in St. Petersburg – I don’t have a plane; we have a marina – I don’t have a yacht.”

Vaccines for the week of April 5 are fully booked, however there is availability for the following weeks, according to a Pinellas County press release. To register and book, go to patientportalfl.com. You can also reach the Patient Portal’s call center at 844-7708548. The website and phone number are available 24/7. tient Portal. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at their appointment. You must bring photo ID and proof of eligibility to your appointment.

For the latest information about all vaccine options countywide, visit covid19.pinellascounty.org/ vaccines. Keep Your Card Safe

Other Options According to the county, more than 300,000 people have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Pinellas, nearly a third of the population. Unfortunately, the system is not centralized. DOH-Pinellas manages vaccines through the CDR Health Patient Portal, but federal, state and pharmacy and health center locations manage their own distribution operations. There are also outreach events, such as the recent pop-ups in Gulfport, to vaccinate underserved populations in the county.

You may have noticed selfies on social media with vaccination cards. The CDC warns people to not pose with their personal information visible, as this could lead to ID theft. The county advises those who get the vaccine to keep their vaccination record card in a safe place and save a photo of it. Want to laminate it? Better not, according to the county. Laminating the card can cause the ink to bleed, making it illegible. If you lose your card or otherwise destroy it, you can request a replacement card from the site where you got your vaccine, but replacements can’t be guaranteed.

See a Problem? Fix It!

St. Pete Beach Joins SeeClickFix Network for Residents Founded in 2008, SeeClickFix helps residents report issues and concerns in their homes and neighborhoods. The online service aims to give people a simpler, quicker way to communicate problems to the appropriate officials. “So in the last year, the City of St. Pete Beach has worked on and launched a new website. So when you visit stpetebeach.org, that site has been completely revitalized and structured in a way that’s easy for residents in the community to get new information,” Sarah Laracuente, public information officer for the City of St. Pete Beach, said. SeeClickFix is hosted under the website platform CivicPlus and aims to provide open communication between residents and public works, as well as between the city and county, according to Laracuente. “If there was an issue that a citizen thinks is a city issue – like for example, reclaimed water – and it goes to the city, the city will then give it to the correct place. So it goes to the county to address any county-related issues and so on,” Laracuente said. How does it work? The social media-like network allows residents to view their neighbors’ issues and requests. They can comment on the issues and offer advice or vote to fix the issue. Need Help With Rent?

A New Program Aims to Help Pinellas Residents with Home Payments By Abby Baker

TIERRA MALLORCA

Some renters in Pinellas County are facing months of missed apartment and home payments due to a loss of income following the pandemic. For them, a county-run rent relief program may be a solution. Households that are 80% below the area median income can apply to the program beginning Wednesday, March 31. The program is also available to individuals who qualify for unemployment or can prove a loss of income. “Many residents have lost jobs or income since the pandemic began and are struggling to keep up with rent,” said Pinellas County Commission Chair Dave Eggers. “We’re grateful for this opportunity to help keep families and those in need in their homes during this challenging time.” The funds – some $21.4 million – come to Pinellas from the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. The Pinellas County Emergency Rental Assistance Program will cover missed payments, as well as up to 12 months of upcoming rent bills. County funds will go to the landlords of successful applicants. Eligible residents can apply at covid19.pinellascounty.org/whereto-get-help.

A Force to Be Reckoned With, She Loved Her Pets, Family and Gulfport By Abby Baker

ALISON WARNER

“I’ve written so many things about her these past weeks,” said friend Lori Rosso. “She was a beautiful, complex woman.”

Marsha Warner, a former guidance counselor at Gulf High School for 32 years, volunteer with the Gulfport Merchants Chamber and previous manager of Gulfport’s Tuesday

Fresh Market, died of cancer at her home on Sunday, March 28. She was 69. Warner chose to spend her last months surrounded by her many friends and daughter, Alison Warner, 27, as well as her two dogs, Fritz and Tofu. “My mom was a very kind and genuine person, always thinking about other people,” Alison said. “She loved animals, and that was like her love for anything – a lot.” Though she battled endometrial cancer for years, the community will remember her for fierce support, and working for the Tuesday Fresh Market, a weekly tradition that she called “a labor of love.” Thirteen years ago, Warner planted her roots in a Gulfport home that she dubbed “The Caladium Cottage.” She filled the space with her

pets, plants and love. “She knew every person on the street, every vendor at the Tuesday Fresh Market,” her longtime friend, and former president of the Gulfport Merchants Chamber, Lori Rosso said. “She was the first one to tell a truck that was blocking a booth to ‘move it’ – a very frank woman.” Warner earned her title as the “Sheriff” of the market, watching out with an unwavering full-toothed grin. “She always had a smile on her face,” said Suzie King, owner of SIK Promotions. “She did a lot for the community, and was always so knowledgeable.” Warner earned her Bachelor of Science and Masters in Business from the University of South Florida. the gabs What is the nicest thing a stranger did for you? Photos by Gabrielle Reeder

Sara Ziad, St. Petersburg: “When my tire went flat and I couldn’t get the nuts off the wheel, and I was stuck and I didn’t want to drive home with a flat tire. Someone in the neighborhood came and changed my whole tire for me even though I had been out there for a whole hour trying to do it. He changed it in five minutes, which was crazy.”

Samantha Dill, Tampa: “When I went to Japan and I had a really bad sunburn, I was looking for aloe and I couldn’t find any anywhere and at one point, there was a language barrier, but I asked the convenient store clerk, I showed her my back. She ended up walking me out of the store and pointing me in the direction of another store, a grocery store and was like go up the stairs and it’s right over here.”

arts A Lifetime of Doodles

Dwight Mathis and the Art of Animation An Army brat born in Germany and raised in Texas, videographer and graphic artist Dwight Mathis made his Florida debut producing TV shows at Ion Television in 2017. Now, the Austin-area native is running his downtown St. Petersburg film studio, Normal Network, full time. After his immersion in the world of television as a producer on the two-season drama, “Full Disclosure,” the 33-year-old left the industry a little less bright eyed and bushy tailed than he arrived. “I always wanted to work on TV, and I was just stoked to be there,” Mathis said. “I learned that there is a lot of politics in the industry, and I wanted to have more freedom with my content.” The content has been freed. Mathis’s work is typically simple concepts built with heightening layers of ridiculous outcomes: a man physically fighting the heat and causing a blizzard after complaining about the temperature; Cinderella’s prince wearing her glass slippers instead of finding the princess; a cartoon with edges of reality in the animation.

By Abby Baker

“At one point doing this, I realized that life is still going, and in a good direction,” Mathis said.

“I was stoked to come to Florida, mainly because I didn’t know where life was going,” Mathis said. “I had a feeling this was the right track.” Early Creations Mathis lived in Texas for 11 years, learning the ropes of animation and film. “I shot everything for like three years – horrible rap videos, commercials for local businesses, any-

thing to pay the rent,” Mathis said. “Funny thing is, I watched ION television shows religiously during that period.” The artist moved to Florida not only to be an associate producer, but to be closer to his mother in Riverview, a far out suburb of Tampa. His father was in the U.S. Army, and his mother was an artistic Korean woman; the two met in a bar. Mathis grew up watching his mother paint and draw and, while he didn’t excel in athletics like his two older brothers, his homemade Dragon Ball Z comics were a hit with other students when the family moved to Texas. “It’s weird. Through drawing, I established myself,” Mathis said. “That’s the way I made friends in ninth grade.” Decades later, Mathis is creating human characters with blown out features, wavy backgrounds with bright colors that resemble real life, always with a twist. “I dropped out of school at 22, but I stuck with drawing,” Mathis said. “My design brain really developed and that helped when I went back into animation.” Maybe his current work isn’t so far off from those early Dragon Ball

Gulfport is home to many artists, creative souls, and Lightworkers. I often hear people say they found Gulfport in some sort of magical way – as if they were “led” here by an unseen force. I believe in magic and I believe Gulfport “found me” in a very magical way and called me here. The first day I visited Gulfport someone told me about THE VORTEX IN BOCA CIEGA BAY. Oh yeah, baby, he was speaking my light language. According to ancient lore, centuries ago the Native tribes who lived in the area created a vortex in the Bay to protect the shoreline from hurricanes. Vortexes (you know, like in Sedona, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Kailash, and Stonehenge) are centers of supernatural energies and it is said THE VEIL BETWEEN THE 3RD DIMENSION AND HIGHER DIMENSIONS IS THE THINNEST AT THE SITE OF THE VORTEX. So when you visit or live in Gulfport, you may just find yourself a little happier, a little more content, and little more relaxed, and a little more loving and kind. IT’S JUST THE MAGIC OF GULFPORT AT WORK.

FRIENDS OF STRAYS

Dogwood and Redwood are handsome hound brothers waiting for their home! These boys are sweet, friendly, yet shy dogs in need of patient families who will help them trust. Sadly, many shelters see a surge in hound dogs this time of year – aligning with hunting season. While we don’t know their background, indicators suggest that they are lost or abandoned hunting dogs. Although they love each other’s company, Dogwood and Redwood do not need to be adopted together. Dogwood and Redwood are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
