Dear Editor: We’re all trying to do our part in keeping Gulfport clean and beautiful, but I am very concerned that this particular department of the city is not enforcing code. I don’t mean for petty little things like cutting your grass. I’m talking about junk visible to all passers-by on and around someone’s property. I don’t care if you want to keep all your junk, but keep it behind your fence, in your backyard and not visible to the street and all who pass by. This uncaring for your property makes Gulfport look horrible. I have complained (with pictures included) of a nearby neighbor that has four or five old refrigerators, microwaves, stoves, tires, broken down bikes, an unregistered, broken down van (also filled with more broken junk), aluminum siding peeling off their home and a carport also loaded with even more junk. Yes junk! You can certainly tell the difference between collecting items to re-purpose or whatever, but this is pure junk scattered all over the property and visible to all. The home owner has not attempted to re-purpose or do anything with all these broken “collectibles.” Refrigerators, especially. Isn’t it even illegal to leave them out without removing the doors so as not to be a hazard to a child who may close themselves inside and suffocate? All of these violations have accumulated and keep accumulating for over five years. I’ve lived here for seven years and have made, at least, a half-dozen written complaints. Code enforcement has done nothing. What do residents do when code enforcement won’t enforce? – Donna Luciano

Kudos on Council Coverage Dear Editor: I would like to thank Ryan [McGahan] for a well-written article regarding the city reversing the Boca Ciega Yacht Club eviction. It was one of the most detailed and thorough articles, which gave balance to all views fairly with no bias. Now I’ll admit I’m a bit biased because I’m the historian for BCYC and have held many positions, including commodore. BCYC certainly wants to work with the city in good faith and remain part of the community as we have for 55 years. There is one item I would like to be clarified. Ryan spoke of only two organizations being displaced. The Gulfport Yacht Club directly to the right of the Lions Club will also be displaced [by the city’s proposed redevelopment]. I appreciate all the hard work your team does to keep Gulfport informed. Keep up the excellent work. – Capt. Richard “Sandbar” Walters, BCYC Historian Correction: Last week’s article about Creative Clay [“More than a Market,” April 15, 2021], stated that Kim Dohrman was the founder of Creative Clay; she is the CEO. Creative Clay was founded in 1995, not 2007. Emily Turnage’s last name was also misspelled. The Gabber apologizes for the errors.

Two Churches, One Mission

Grace Connection and Holy Name Look to Offer New Affordable Housing By Abby Baker

SHELLY WILSON

Pastor Tim Kelley of Grace Connection Church has been hitting roadblocks in an effort to sell the property for nearly three years. Most recently, the sale of the property is pending to affordable housing builder, Blue Sky Communities.

Both Grace Connection Church and Gulfport’s Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church are looking at some big changes that include bringing affordable housing to the area. Amidst city zoning regulations and community outcry, the churches are facing two very different roads on the way to development.

The Plight of Grace Connection Since the summer of 2019, Grace Connection Church, at 635 64th St. S., has been looking to sell the property due to high costs and aging infrastructure of the building, built in 1958. A sale to the City of St. Petersburg fell through in May of 2019 when Pastor Tim Kelley decided to sell the

property to another congregation following public anger from residents, both in Gulfport and St. Petersburg, about the idea of affordable housing in their neighborhood. Soon after, that deal also fell through after a “handshake agreement.” Today, Grace Connection is in talks with Blue Sky Communities of Tam-

pa to construct a 55-plus, four-story building featuring 85 units. In February of 2020, St. Petersburg’s Community Planning and Preservation Commission rejected a request for rezoning the property following resident complaints about the size, structure and largely unsubstantiated ideas about potential crime. Blue Sky is currently in the process of appealing the rejected request. Kelley remains hopeful that the process will pan out and allow the church to move to a more manageable location, while offering needed housing for the community. “I think the neighborhood will be much happier with them than with us, safer even,” Kelley said. “The property is too much for us to maintain. There’s been stolen cars left here; the police are frequently called.”

Church numbers eventually dwindled, and Grace Connection was left with an aging building. In the last few years, for the first time in three decades, the City of St. Petersburg inspected the property to ensure it was up to code. That inspection would cost the church $250,000 in pending violations. “Those violations are still pending, but we’re not liable because we’re in the process of selling,” Kelley said. If another congregation were to take over, those fees would belong to them. For Blue Sky, the building would be completely torn down, erasing the piling bills. “I would sell it to the first person I could,” Kelley said. “I would rather spend money on public outreach than 20 air conditioners.”

ing that will feature 75 apartment units for fixed-income elderly residents on church property at 5800 15th Ave. S. “The building is on our campus and we want to be certain it is well maintained,” said Pat Sullivan, Parish Manager at Holy Name. Unlike Grace Connection, Holy Name is funding the project entirely independently. The church met with Blue Sky Communities to explore building plan options, though the company will not develop the site. “We worked with them and their architect on a very nice plan that we think blends in nicely with the surrounding neighborhood,” Sullivan said. “We are excited to realize the church’s mission to serve the local community in this way, and we hope that the city and community will support us in this endeavor.” These stories are developing. The Gabber will provide updates as they’re available.

Money on the Line Holy Name Awaits Approval When Grace Connection came to the building in 2012, the congregation split services and shared the church with Pasadena Baptist Church.

After Piney Point

Piney Point Poses Risk for the Bay, Sheds Light on Other Pending Disasters It’s hard to ignore the recent near miss at the old Piney Point Gypsum stack, owned by HRK Holdings, LLC in Manatee County. Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency on April 3 after the pond atop the stack started leaking. As fears rose that the 480 million gallons of nutrient-laced water could engulf the area, several hundred nearby residents were evacuated, and U.S. 41 was closed. Now folks are back in their homes, roads are open. The leak’s still there, but the Florida Department of Environmental Protection lowered the water level, pumping out millions of gallons into a nearby creek flowing to Tampa Bay. Crisis averted, right? Longtime Concerns Engulf Phosphate Mining

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

FDEP deployed submersible cameras to find the torn seam and place a steel plate to temporarily stop the seepage on April 10.

Environmentalist and native Floridian Terry Fortner said the incident “has been a crash course for the general public as we learn the history of Piney Point.” Fortner, a founding member of Friends of Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves, Inc., said it’s evident DEP officials “have bent the rules and ignored warnings about Piney Point’s problems for nearly five decades,

since it was built in 1966 to keep the fertilizer business open a little longer.” While immediate disaster seems narrowly avoided, the long-term effects are still unknown. “The threat of a 20-foot inundation put lives in immediate danger and caused Manatee County neighbors, and citizens across Florida, to

realize what’s been overlooked in our neighborhood,” Fortner added. What About the Bay? “We are very concerned about the levels of nitrogen and phosphorus discharged,” said Ed Sherwood, executive director of the Tampa Bay Estuary Program. “We fear the amount of nutrients will fuel algal and macroalgal blooms in the bay. That’s where our immediate attention is focused: ramping up water quality, sediment quality and other environmental monitoring necessary to generate a recent baseline to assess further impacts down the road.” Currently, Sherwood said, the USF Ocean Circulation Lab headed by Dr. Ronald H. Weissberg is working on forecasts to further aid our efforts and understanding in this regard, but it may take time before we understand the true impact. A Threat to Aquaculture

have been successful. There’s shellfish farming the first time since the 1950s, and acres of seagrass are thriving, improving habitat for wildlife. For local oyster farmer Brian Rosegger, the Piney Point release is definitely a concern. “I’m not an alarmist, but when something happens in the bay, we’re concerned,” said Rosseger, who leases underwater land from the state for his Lost Coast Oyster farm. “It threatens our clean water.” Rosegger said he’s not closed, but “as a good steward we’re not harvesting until we get a clean water report.”

the state millions in lost revenue from fisheries and tourism dollars. It was a death knell for many coastal businesses. “An algae bloom potentially affects seagrass [from shading] and wildlife resources by reducing dissolved oxygen levels once the blooms die,” said Sherwood. “It depends upon how much nutrients are retained and recycled in the bay… understanding where the plume of the discharge is circulated and diluted in the bay is crucial.” Bone Valley And Piney Point’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are 25 gypsum stacks looming around the state, and 22 of them are right in our backyard, peppered around Polk County in the once-rural towns of Mulberry and Bartow. They string southward, expanding through southern Hillsborough and Manatee Counties through an area old-timers call Bone Valley for its trove of Mesozoic fossils: Mastodon teeth and other prehistoric fossils from a time when the Florida peninsula was rising up from the sea. Across Central Florida gypsum ponds are a bright, deep teal. They are at risk for overflows during hurricanes and heavy rains. In 2016 a giant sinkhole near Mulberry developed under a stack owed by Mosaic, allowing 215 million gallons of contaminated water into the Floridan aquifer, our source of drinking water. And on April 5, Polk County commissioners renewed a two-year permit for Mosaic’s phosphate mines near South Fort Meade, amid pro-

Toxic Water? According to the DEP, the released water is not toxic, but it’s full of nutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and ammonia. It’s the massive amount of nutrients that could cause a harmful algae bloom. No one wants a repeat of the red tide event of 2018 that persisted for more than a year, costing

tests from concerned citizens. “As citizens we must face up to the realization that pollution from agriculture and development is allowed to contaminate Florida’s vital bodies of water, over and over again” said Fortner. “Piney Point is a poster child for what is going on throughout the state.” Closing Piney Point At a press conference in Manatee County Tuesday, April 13, DeSantis pledged to fix the Piney Point problem. “We want this to be the last chapter in the Piney Point story,” he said. “Today I’m directing the DEP to create a plan to close Piney Point ... I’ve requested a team of scientists and engineers develop plans for the permanent closure of this site.” He said this ensures the state has a scientific plan and the resources to close the site permanently. Earlier DeSantis pledged to use funds from the state’s economic recovery allotment for clean up. According to recent DEP reports, no more water is being released from the leaky pond, and in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers, they are working to assess the damage with submersibles, ground-penetrating radar and drones. Meanwhile, there’s been no official statement about potential problems with remaining phosphogypsum ponds around the state. Cases Rise, Face Mask Order May Go

The Public Is Invited to Weigh In at the May 11 Commission Meeting By Gabber Staff

In an April 13 release, Pinellas County acknowledged that COVID-19 cases, positive tests and hospitalizations are escalating in county. However, the Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on May 11 to possibly amend or repeal the face mask ordinance. “After a thoughtful discussion that included hours of public comment, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday agreed to schedule a public hearing for May 11 to consider repealing or amending the county ordinance requiring face coverings inside public places and certain restrictions in bars and restaurants,” the release stated. While commissioners wrestle with whether or not to extend mask requirements still highly recommended by the CDC, they have extended the COVID-19 State of Local Emergency declaration through April 23, which allows the county to take advantage of FEMA reimbursements for COVID-related expenses. The county currently spends about $1.3 million a month on vaccination and testing sites, according to the release. The county reported that “dozens of residents” appealed to the board on Tuesday, April 13, mostly speaking to oppose the face covering requirement, as well as numerous emails both for and against the ordinance. Florida Department of Health in Pinellas Director Dr. Ulyee Choe urged the county to keep mask and social distancing requirements in effect. Dr. Choe reports that rolling seven-day averages for COVID-19 cases and positive test rates have risen over the last month and are currently at 259 and 6.8 percent, respectively. Hospitalizations have also risen. “Studies continue to show the efficacy of masks, and most scientific and medical experts continue to recom-

mend them as an important tool for slowing the virus’ spread,” Dr. Choe reported. The CDC urges people to wear masks in public settings, events and gatherings, and “anywhere they will be around other people.” Since February 2, 2021, masks are required on “planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations,” according to the CDC website. The May 11 public hearing on face coverings will take place during the board’s regular in-person/virtual meeting. Commissioners could “repeal all or part of the ordinance, amend it, or keep the full ordinance in effect.” Find information about how to attend the meeting, either virtually or in-person, at pinellascounty. org/bcc_agenda.htm. Cases on the Rise, But So Are Vaccinations

In Pinellas County, 43 percent of adults have at least one COVID shot, and 27 percent are fully vaccinated (two shots for Pfizer and Moderna; one for Johnson & Johnson). According to Dr. Choe, current modeling shows that half of Pinellas adults could be vaccinated by mid-May. In addition to federal-, stateand county-run sites, as well as Publix and CVS vaccination locations, County Administrator Burton noted that more vaccine distributors, such as Walgreens and Costco, are “just now coming on board, expanding the opportunity for residents 16 and over to receive the vaccine if they want it.” Burton expected that “many more people” will be vaccinated by May 11, which could factor into the board’s decision on face coverings.

Gulfport’s Newest Car Park

Owner of Pia’s Adds Additional Paid Parking in Downtown Gulfport By Abby Baker

PIA GOFF

Pia’s Trattoria owner, Pia Goff, opened a private parking lot on Beach Boulevard.

The owner of Pia’s Trattoria in Gulfport recently cleaned and landscaped an existing lot near her property at 3104 Beach Blvd. S. Now, Pia Goff has opened the parking space for business, charging $10 normally and $5 on Sundays, per vehicle, to help maintain the area and provide extra, prime parking for visitors. On Sundays, Goff says she plans to donate the reduced fee to benefit the Gulfport Senior Center.

Formerly the site of Gulfport’s longtime restaurant, La Cote Basque, the building has since been torn down; the vacant lot is held by a private owner. “Nothing has changed. I lease the lot because there was a need for parking,” Goff said. “It does fill a niche market for people visiting from out of town.” While there is free parking along Beach Boulevard, the lot is another option for those who find it difficult

to park, especially during events like Gulfport’s Tuesday Fresh Market and First Friday Art Walk. “We didn’t build a monstrous building here, just cleaned it up,” Goff said. For now, the parking lot is run by Goff’s family, but that could soon change as the idea gains traction. “I can’t ask my son to park cars every Sunday forever. He has a life too, I guess,” Goff joked.

House of Memories

A Gulfport Woman’s Tale of Living in Famous Writer’s Former Home Yiddish writer and humorist Jacob Adler, renowned amongst the Jewish people, moved from New York City to Gulfport in 1931, when the Sunshine Skyway Bridge didn’t exist and many of the hamlet’s streets were paved with crushed seashells. Adler died in a St. Petersburg nursing home at the age of 101 on January 1, 1975. Yet his former home, where he lived with his wife, Celia Adler, is still remembered by his many grandchildren as a far away visiting spot and warm sanctuary. Lenore Reynolds, a 72-year-old local Realtor, unknowingly lived in Jacob Adler’s former Gulfport home for over a decade before the Yiddish writer’s grandson, David Adler, showed up on her doorstep during a dinner party in 2017. A Visit From the Past “He showed up, this tall guy, with a stack of papers, it was adorable,” Reynolds said. “He’s like, ‘I swear I’m not a stalker.’” David Adler was on a business trip to Tampa, and, feeling nostalgic, crossed the bay to see the small Florida town that he visited as a child. In the 1950s, the house had no

air conditioning and the front porch was nonexistent, but nonetheless, it was the same space that contained those early childhood memories. “I always felt love in this house, and other people have told me that as well,” Reynolds said. David currently lives in New Jersey, but has since remained in contact with Reynolds. The two bonded over history, and Reynolds eventually went to Jacob Adler’s gravesite in St. Petersburg to send “the tall guy” a picture of his grandfather’s resting place. da,” said David. “I wanted to see the old place, see if it was how I remembered it.” Yet Jacob Adler never really retired. He wrote every day and, despite being non-religious, went on to become a founding member and first president of the Congregation Beth Sholom of Gulfport in 1953, which recently closed after nearly 70 years, in 2021. Dennis Torres, a novelist and professor at Pepperdine University, recalls being one of the only grandchildren to be invited to stay the entire summer at his grandparents house at the age of 10. “I didn’t know why they picked me – maybe he knew I was going to be a writer – but I didn’t care regardless,” Torres said. “I was just happy to go to Florida.” Creator of a famous household name and Jewish character, Yente Telebende, a figure that stands for any gossiping, meddling Jewish woman, Jacob Adler wrote under the name B. Kovner for the New York City-based newspaper, The Jewish Daily Forward. He may be known in the Yiddish community as a prolific writer, but his overflowing family remembers him as more than that from his retirement – a white-mustached man in shorts, enjoying the Florida sunshine. “He wrote every morning, in Yiddish, and never drove a car,” Torres said. “Really, they lived a simple life, and I loved a simple life.”

Keeping It Clean on TI

Locals and Tourists Alike Turn Out for Monthly Treasure Island Cleanups By Gabrielle Reeder

GABRIELLE REEDER

Don Nolan checks his supplies at a recent Treasure Island beach cleanup.

Don Nolan of Treasure Island keeps the beach beautiful and thinks of the safety of others while leading monthly Treasure Island clean ups. “We’ve been doing this since 1999. Second Saturday of every month, 8:30,” Nolan said. Volunteers meet in the Waffle House parking lot, at 11185 Gulf Blvd, and Nolan doles out a bucket, garbage bag and a litter grabber to each participant. Each cleanup lasts around two hours. “The thing that scares me is the kids, when they get out on the beach, they run. And if somebody brings a bottle and breaks it, you know, the kid steps on it,” Nolan said. If there are copious amounts of dead birds or fish, Nolan says he’ll call the city to find out the cause. The city provides a dumpster for the trash collected at each clean up in exchange for credit. “We’ve been running around close to 2,000 pounds a year,” Nolan said. The city provides a sign on the causeway for the cleanups, which Nolan says helps with turnout. During peak season, locals and even tourists participate. “Sometimes we get a lot of tourists, this time of year,” Nolan said. “One time is better than no time.”

The four locations are North Community Library, Mirror Lake Community Library, J.W. Cate Recreation Center and Enoch Davis Recreation Center. The showrooms followed a series of three community meetings this past week, in which developers spoke about their plans to design the Trop site. Find out more at stpete.org/trop.

New Name, New Look

After Recent Name Change, St. Pete’s Main Library Undergoes Renovation By Gabrielle Reeder

GABRIELLE REEDER

Shortly after its recent name change, the President Barack Obama Main Library (formerly the St. Petersburg Main Branch Library) closed its doors to the public on April 1 for a $6 million renovation. Following the renaming and dedication in February, the space will feature new programming areas, new staff areas, a parking lot with more spaces and a new back patio. According to Mika Slaughter Nelson, MLIS Director of the St. Petersburg Library System, staff shared different ideas for redevelopment and remodeling with the mayor.

“When that many projects for one facility emerged, the mayor thought it prudent to establish these projects,” Nelson said. The library is closed until the renovations conclude, however the inventory will move to a temporary location staffed with workers. “Everything will have to be vacated outside of the building in order to address the various components of the construction,” Nelson said. “It’s not like we’re opening another library, but that inventory will be available to the public. So it will be able to be requested in our catalog.” Inventory from the library is

available to guests at other libraries. The guest can request inventory from the Obama library catalog and transfer it to another library location. Nelson believes the new library will bring balance to patrons. New programming rooms will cater to those who prefer quiet, solitary work, as well as individuals who are more collaborative. “How people utilize the library is very different than when the building was first erected,” Nelson said. “I’m looking forward to the community having spaces that work for their demands. For this current, modern society, when there’s a need for much more technology, I’m looking forward to there being that available to the community.” Nelson said the renovations could last up to two years. “A lot of things change when it comes to projects of these types,” Nelson said, “but the timeline right now will have us wrapping up the project late 2022, early 2023.”

the gabs How do you feel about the government canceling student loan debt? Photos by Gabrielle Reeder

Noah Oakley, Tampa: “Canceling student debt would mean a lot to me, especially as a first generation college student. I didn’t have a lot of the resources going into college to overcome a lot of different challenges, and now student debt is one that I’ve had to carry throughout the rest of my adult life and I don’t really have that support from people in my family. So it would be something that would allow me to go forth and make my family proud and really live the life I’m meant to.”

Henley Guill, North Port, Florida: “I would like them to cancel student loans because I definitely have some, and I think it would help a lot of people and let us actually do something with our degrees instead of worrying about paying off all of our loans.”

Ally Sharbo, St. Paul, Minnesota: “I am excited about the student loans being canceled. It will certainly benefit me and a lot of my peers in college. And I’m hopeful that I can use that money to achieve things down the road, like saving up for a house or a pet, something like that.”

Sarah Maas, St. Petersburg: “I don’t mind it. I do believe, though there should be some rules. For example, if you were to fail the class or to get lower than a D, I think is passing, I do think you should have to owe for what the government gave you. If you decide that the government’s just gonna provide you with this money, and you’re not gonna go to school or not even gonna try, I definitely think there should be some stipulations along that.”

The popular Facebook group was meant to last one month as a way to support Gulfport artists during the 2020 COVID-19 shutdowns. Instead, it became a platform for artists to show their work, try new skills and enjoy a sense of community by posting their work according to a weekly, sometimes daily, prompt such as “Selfie,” “Spring” or “Crown.” Prompts often include a twist or double meaning such as “Vane/Vein” or “Pet/Pet Peeve.” Today, the group is ongoing and has 500 international members. BRUCE DONATH

PEARSE, DEBORAH M. “Debby,” 80, of Kennebunkport, Maine and Gulfport, died unexpectedly on April 6, following complications from an operation. Born in Worcester, MA on June 8, 1940 to Reverend John Martin and Marie Martin (Farley) she lived a life of love, unending friendships and serial entrepreneurship. Her mix of genuine interest in all she met naturally led many to nickname her “Mom” for her guidance, gentle support and love. She is survived by her loving family: husband, Bruce Donath; children, Jonathan (Peggy) of Mystic, CT; Julie (Ross) Sullivan of Marshfield, MA; Chung Sook Valdes of Worcester, MA; stepchildren Kate (Mark) Ferreira of Plymouth, MA and Jeffrey Donath of Hudson, WI. Predeceased by her sister Judith (Leonard), she was very close to surviving sisters, Martha (Synnott) of Seminole, and Connie

(Anick) of Marlboro, MA. Grandchildren missing her include Christopher and Michael Sullivan, Skyler, Zoe, and Macy Pearse, Adam and Samuel Ferreira, and Sonya and Kim Valdes. She leaves fond memories with the love of a long list of cousins, nieces, nephews, their children and five great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in her honor to Atlantic Hall (atlantichall. org), Church on the Cape (churchonthecape.org) or her favorite theater, Good Theatre of Portland (goodtheatre.org). Funeral Notice A funeral mass will be held for Chris Clark at the Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church on Thursday, April 29 at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at 1 p.m. at Salty’s in Gulfport.

business Business Beat: European Treats, Space for Art & Tour Tripping Olivier Rodriguez of Italy and Grégory Pugin of the south of France, partners in the ownership of Cocoa Addiction in St. Pete Beach, are both renowned in the culinary world. Rodriguez worked as a pastry chef throughout America, and Pugin is a five-star chef in Europe as well as the United States. They’re not new to the kitchen, but they are new to St. Petersburg. Cocoa Addiction, at 344 Corey Ave., officially opened its doors on Saturday, April 17. The two chefs sold their creations wholesale in Miami for years, but the store on St. Pete Beach is the duo’s first brickand-mortar location. “Me and my partner are not like most people who do this who started in the banking industry, or other businesses, and transferred over to this because they love it,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve been doing this professionally for years.” Among other things, the shop sells artistically crafted bonbons, hazelnut spreads, buttery European pastries and fresh coffee. “In Miami, the European pastry market is oversaturated; here there is space for everyone,” Rodriguez said.

Self-proclaimed “terrible travelers” C.J and Kaitlin Gustafson first realized the market for a live tour booking app when their wild dolphin swimming excursion was canceled in Hawaii. It was their honeymoon, and it took the couple a few hours to find something that was available the same day. When they arrived on the tour, it was barely full. “A lot of websites that you see are all about planning ahead,” Kaitlin said. “We found a way to show the tours closest to you that are live and ready.” In 2019, they launched the free app for live tours, BUBBA Booking.
