news Council Returns to ‘Normal’
Zoom Attendance Canceled; Residents Refute Noise Complaints In their second meeting back at Gulfport City Hall on May 18, council saw a return to pre-COVID days as the majority of attendees went without masks for the first time since in-person meetings resumed late last year. Council punctuated this change with a 3-2 vote to end Zoom as a means of virtually attending the meeting, before discussing budget issues for the upcoming year and continuing the ongoing debate over the Village Courtyard noise complaints.
NORTH END TAPHOUSE
By Ryan McGahan
Residents Come Out in Support of the North End Taphouse After nearly two months of public back and forth between the owners of the North End Taphouse and local residents complaining about the noise caused by performers there, a half-dozen local residents came to speak in favor of the Taphouse during this week’s public comment. “Except for Cinco de Mayo, which obviously is an exception, I’ve never heard any music from the North End Taphouse in my house, and honestly, I think that was Sea Dogs’ event that I heard inside,” said David Hand, who lives near both establishments. “I can hear them outside, but whenever I go inside and shut my doors, it’s perfectly fine.” This sentiment was echoed by several other residents, like Lindsey Miller, who lives caddy-corner to the Taphouse. “I do notice that some of my neighbors have some of their windows open more often than I do; maybe they’re hearing the music a little bit louder because of that, but I wouldn’t say that it’s a disturbance,” Miller said. Kelly Wright and Houston Gilbreath, co-owners of the Taphouse, also spoke during the meeting, with Wright explaining that she had spoken with many of the local neighbors, and that all were in favor of a

and had noise complaints leveled against his band by a resident. “It’s a tough one for me, because my heart’s in it,” Henderson said. Council agreed to extend the moratorium for another two weeks, and will likely make a decision on the ordinance at the June 1 city council meeting.
Overheard at the May 18 Gulfport City Council Meeting “I’ve been harping on garbage cans for two or three years now…. Our city has done a fantastic job of getting garbage cans at the beach; our city does a fantastic job of keeping our parks clean, and 22nd Avenue is a total embarrassment.” – Karen Love, requesting public garbage cans be added to 22nd Avenue (Gulfport Boulevard). In his closing comments, Mayor Sam Henderson requested, and council approved, adding six public garbage cans, three on each side of Gulfport Boulevard, between 49th and 58th Streets South.
Council Looks Ahead as Pandemic Restrictions Loosen As vaccination numbers increase, council continues to make adjustments to a “post-COVID” Gulfport, including a vote to stop allowing residents to call in to comment over Zoom at council meetings. Vice Mayor April Thanos and Councilmember Paul Ray voted to continue using Zoom, while Mayor Sam Henderson and Councilmembers Brown and Michael Fridovich voted to stop. “With the number of people that have been vaccinated, I think now the responsibility is to get yourself back to the meeting if public comment is important to you,” Henderson said. With no resolutions or ordinances up for vote at the meeting, council spent a good amount of time discussing budgetary planning for the upcoming year, beginning with a presentation by David Alvarez of the city’s audit for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Thanks to the pandemic, general revenues for the city were $800,000 below budget, but “something that the city can be proud of [is that] expenditures actually came in $1.1 million under” budget, meaning the city was able to adapt without going into debt, Alvarez said. After the audit, City Manager Jim O’Reilly led a discussion on budget planning for the coming year, advising that the city stay fairly conservative in their spending this year since the economy is still uncertain, and to give the city space to increase wages as required by the recent minimum wage hike approved by Florida voters last November. Thanos asked if there were any updates to the breakwater park planned for the Gulfport Marina, and O’Reilly responded that there
“I just wanted to say that May 29th will be the Pride Flag raising at 4 p.m. I believe the band will be starting up at 3:30 down at the Rec Center and marching up to the flag raising. The LGBTQ Resource Center’s Art Out Exhibit also begins at 4; that runs until 6.” – Paul Ray, in his closing comments. “The Lions Club is having a mobile pantry program, Feeding Tampa Bay, and they’re going to do it the fourth Thursday of every month… beginning this Thursday, May 27… from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. They’ll be handing out food, so if you want to find out more about the program, call the Lions Club; they’re out on Tifton Drive.” – Christine Brown, in her closing comments.
were none, as the city is waiting to see if Governor Ron Desantis will include their request for funding in his annual budget. Thanos continued last week’s discussion on making it a city policy to prioritize electric vehicles over gas-powered ones when
replacing city cars and trucks, an idea council seems to favor, so long as the electric vehicles aren’t prohibitively expensive and can perform as well as the existing ones. The proposal will likely be brought to a vote at a future meeting.

"she saved my life"
Tampa Bay area resident Jean P. had been experiencing the painful side effects of peripheral neuropathy, “My feet and legs were extremely painful and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do and that I would have to take gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met St. Petersburg's Dr. Rebecca Gibbons. Peripheral neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Jean explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?" She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling and sharp pains that those suffering with neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, is that it's equivalent to walking on glass.” Jean hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her feet. Unfortunately Jean's story is all too familiar. For the over 3 million people in the U.S. suffering from peripheral neuropathy. If you’re unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis, you’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet. You have difficulty walking, shopping or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. You’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall.
Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects. Dr. Gibbons, founder of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in St. Petersburg, FL, is using the science of acupuncture and other integrative techniques that assist in increasing blood flow and expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease. “Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,”Jean enthusiastically describes life after receiving Dr. Gibbons treatments. 'I can wear socks and shoes!”
If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain or you’ve had to miss out on enjoying our beautiful weather and beaches because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Gibbons and the staff at Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN! There is so much to enjoy in St. Pete and Tampa Bay.
Dr. Gibbons is now accepting new patients. Call (727) 272-3587 now to schedule a consultation.
Jean and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day. "It's life altering. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Gibbons saved my life!" Dr. Gibbons who has also been an RN for over 16 years, integrates both her western medicine background with effective eastern medicine strategies to be able to offer a different non-drug, non surgical option to those who have chronic pain and complex chronic conditions.

Slightly Sunburnt Pirates
Gulfportians Remember the Golden Summers of Their Youth Ah, summer in Gulfport, a kids’ paradise! Two whole months of vacation, with no classes, no responsibilities, no shoes...But is that really the case? I recently consulted a group of former junior Gulfportians, seeking the truth about summer fun in years past. I found the facts – and a treasure trove of slightly sunburnt memories. Many Gulfportians fondly recall the Summer Enrichment Program hosted at Gulfport Elementary School from 1946 through the 1970s. The free program lasted all day, Monday through Friday – “Moms loved it!” – and offered a wide array of arts and crafts, games, sports, movies and a weekly field trip. For just 10 cents, kids could visit such exotic locales as Palm Harbor’s Wall Springs (a former health spa-turned-swimming hole), the Gay Blades rollerink (home of the bay area’s largest hardwood maple floor!), and the old St. Pete YMCA, with its fine mosaics and even finer natatorial facilities. “I taught public school for 40 years,” says Melissa Nabbe Matusevich, who attended the program in the 1950s, “and have never seen anything like it!” Matusevich recalls summers spent eating watermelon, biking to Gulfport Beach and playing in inflatable pools. “They were a great way to try to get cool in our world with no air-conditioning,” she said. “The first AC I knew of in Gulfport was in 1954 or ‘55 at the

Gulfport Shopping Center. To us kids, it was a marvel.” The fun continued when the program at Gulfport Elementary transformed into a city-sponsored summer camp at the Gulfport Rec Center. Emily Barnes, who now directs the preschool program at Great Explorations Children’s Museum, recalls working as a counselor for the camp in the 1990s – “my first real sense of responsibility.” Here summer hours
were filled with dodgeball, field days, trips to Fort De Soto, and plenty of opportunities to tease her younger brother, who was a camper. Then as now, swimming was popular. In the 1950s, the Red Cross sponsored a Vacation Swim Program with lessons for children and adults, and Gulfport Beach was often packed. This was before the bridge to Mullet Key was built along with the many fill island developments to the south. “The water was clear then,” remembers Joy Hitchcock.

MELISSA NABBE MATUSEVICH
“Kids everywhere had small blow-up swimming pools,” says Melissa Matusevich of her summers in Gulfport in the 1950s.
Gulfport’s kids devised lots of other ways to keep cool. “We had lots of lemonade stands,” recalls Barnes. “We always did well.” Matusevich remembers a day when the Jackson Ice Company de-
Gulfport gathers
livery man gave her and her friends a spare block of ice. “We couldn’t pick it up, so we rolled it end over end to 57th street, which was then a dirt road, and put it in the shade.” She laughs. “We took turns sitting on it all afternoon!”
And what about the finer things? Gulfport kids in the 1950s got their literary fix by filling bike baskets up with library books and, as H. Duane Corn puts it, “reading everything I could get my hands on.” At night, kids could pile into the back of a neighbor’s pickup truck and head on over to the Sky-Vue Drive In in South Pasadena. Admission was $1 per carload, and for 10 cents extra, get a PIC minitorch to put on your dashboard to keep the bugs away. All the modern conveniences. Far from slacking, Gulfport’s young folks filled their summer days with learning, exploring, small business ventures and more than a few independently organized adventures. Looking back on past seasons of fishing, diving, sunning, camping, climbing, seeking exotic reptiles, and “lord knows what else,” Corne concludes, “I guess we were just pirates in those days.” May the wind fill your sails, summer pirates, and all your days be golden!

Renaissance Dad: Naked on the Side of the Road We’ve logged tens of thousands of miles road-tripping from coast to coast with our two kids. When it comes to the family road trip, Clark Griswold has nothing on us. We’re experts. My family has woken up to some stunning scenery. From the shadows of sheer canyons in a remote corner of New Mexico to the shores of Bahia Honda, having an RV is an immersive experience. For instance, this dispatch comes to you from a gravel lot in Jersey City (that’s in New Jersey). From the bed in our RV, I can see a collection of boats in dry storage, an old crane yard, and a giant tour bus belonging to “El Alfa El Jefe,” (yes, the Dominican music sensation). Just beyond, brand new high-rise condos with views of Lower Manhattan start at a cool $1 million. (I was hopeful when the sign said, “325 Grand,” but that was the address.) We’re camping in the “next Brooklyn.”

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is, “How do you spend so much time together without killing each other?” Keeping peace in our rolling tenement is an art. We’ve learned that drives longer than four hours turn our sweet offspring into Children of the Corn. It starts with one child humming, the other gets annoyed
and starts tapping and in mere moments the passive-aggressive decathlon is underway. (Other events include whistling, talking, not talking, chewing and breathing.) I typically respond by reminding them that if they don’t heed my soft warning, the scorched-earth justice of their mother will follow. Is it an idle threat when she de-

clares that we’ll leave them on the side of the road? I’m not sure. But the other day our kids were faced with something far worse than total abandonment: a drive without their electronics. Would they survive the drive from the Smoky Mountains to Northern Virginia, without YouTube? Without Fortnite? Our kids dug deep and summoned the courage to ride down a road, unentertained. They’ll eventually write a book about their experience. Two hours into the drive, our son stared out the window and mused, “It’s pretty here.” We’ve driven just about every corner of Virginia over the last three summers and he just noticed. Spoiler alert: they survived. Honestly, it’s usually great. Our kids have adapted to road life. They’ve learned to love historic sites; they indulge the backstories we tell them in order to give the context of why someplace is “interesting”; and when the going gets tough, they feign interest when they have none. We dragged them to William Faulkner’s house in Oxford, MS. Our daughter threw me a bone: “What’s your favorite book that he wrote, Daddy?” I haven’t read any, Sweetie. Just look at the famous dead guy’s house. Oh, the look of dread on the face of tour guides when they see two kids join their group. But they invariably surprise the experts. The guide at Helen Keller’s birthplace was ready
to hire them. And I’m not kidding when I tell you that we left them unattended with Civil War re-enactors for an hour at Bull Run while Monica and I did a walking tour. When we returned, our son was giving commands during their gun firing demonstration and our daughter was polishing off her third piece of “hard tack.” The truth is, we tend to remember the good moments and forget the dark times. We once ate at a restaurant in Mammoth Lakes where no one spoke except to the server. For a month in 2018 we couldn’t use the
word “hike” around our daughter. But if there’s one time the wheels fall off, it’s when we get lost. The kids get nervous when my wife and I both have our phones open to Google maps. Once, we found ourselves on the wrong trail during a massive thunderstorm in the Shenandoah Mountains. Our kids have a hard time believing that it could’ve been worse, but it’s not like anyone got caught naked on the side of the road or contracted Lyme disease that day. Actually that did happen. But I still had fun.

crime Domestic Stabbing Leaves St. Pete Woman in Critical Condition By Abby Baker
JUNE JOHNS
In what police believe is a domestic dispute, a woman, 53, was stabbed by her adult son at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, in St. Petersburg. The incident occurred at a residence on 49th Street South, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department. The son is in police custody being treated for minor injuries; the mother is in a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. “They are both adults and we are trying to find out exactly what happened at the residence,” said Yolanda Fernandez, public information officer for the St. Petersburg Police Department. According to police, the nature of the charges hinge on her condition. “Initially we didn’t know how severe, but this looks pretty severe,” Fernandez said. This is a developing investigation.

Vibrator Theft Shakes Up Gulfport
Bar Bandit Takes Toys Meant for Charity Event; Returns Them By Abby Baker
Two women entered Salty’s Gulfport bar on Monday, May 17, and one left with 13 stolen vibrators in a purse. Allegedly, Kandy Schier, 52, walked into the establishment on 5413 Shore Blvd. S., sat at the bar, then walked to the bucket of 13 sex toys that were intended for use at a Gulfport Pride charity event, Vibrator Races, and walked out with them in the mid afternoon. Her accomplice, Thersea Graham, 58, went with her, and the beer bucket that formerly housed the vibrators remained. “I have one of their names from a bar tab, and I gave both their numbers to the police,” Salty’s owner JP Brewer said the day after the crime. “I’m pressing charges because I obviously don’t want the stolen property back.” Schier was trespassed by the property on Wednesday, May 19 after attempting to return the vibrators. “Shier stated she was extremely sorry and was under the impression the vibrators were free as there was no sign near them stating otherwise,” according to the Gulfport Police Department report. “Shier then stated she had no mal intent and was trying to do the right thing by contacting Salty’s to tell them what happened.” Eventually, she returned some of the items, but not all.
“Schier further stated that she thought the vibrators were free giveaways, and that since she had taken them, she had also given some of them away to friends, but that almost all had been returned to the owner,” the police report reads. Any returned property will not be used in the races, however OutCoast: Gay Florida Travel donated a fresh dozen toys for the event. “Everyone wants to sponsor now; this is becoming a huge event,” said Suzie King, an organizer with Gulfport Pride. Brewer ultimately did not press charges. “Brewer indicated she learned that there had been a lot of negative publicity on social media for the suspects and they are now known and trespassed and she was not interested in continuing the matter,” according to the police report. Brewer said she told police the stolen merchandise was worth $200, but
that was an offhand estimate and the toys, 11 of which were unwrapped, are probably worth much more. “I had just picked up three that were priced at $75 each,” Brewer said. Facebook Fodder After the incident, Brewer posted a photo of the woman from the video on her personal Facebook page, which almost immediately exploded with puns, jabs and donation offerings. “This post shakes me up, a little rattled,” one Facebook user wrote. “I’ll send vibes for the cause!” wrote another. The vibrator races are still charged up and ready to go. “The show will go on,” Brewer said. The event, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 29 at Salty’s, will raise money for the Gulfport Library’s LGBTQ Resource Center.

arts Summer Theater Is a Go
Local Companies Are Eager to Welcome Back Audiences By Jeff Donnelly
Gulfport Community Players Gulfport Community Players return to the stage of the Catherine Hickman Theater just in time for Pride Month with “Birds of a Feather” by Marc Acito. Remember Roy and Silo, the two male Central Park Zoo chinstrap penguins who adopted an egg and raised a chick together? This very true story was the subject of a 2005 children’s book by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson, “And Tango Makes Three,” that became one of the most banned books in the U.S. Acito’s stage version moves beyond children’s book territory to ruminate on relationships, conformism and the construction of public identity as the penguins and their zoo community grapple with parenthood and celebrity. The show runs June 10 to 20 with socially distanced seating. gulfportcommunityplayers. org St Petersburg Opera Company There are plenty of great venues around town, but catching the St. Petersburg Opera Company at the Palladium is always a treat. of actors based on a real-life story of a middle-aged actor who murdered his actress wife during a performance. Opera composers don’t often write their own libretto, but this case lit a creative spark in Leoncavallo, and his 1892 opera is a perennial audience favorite — short, gritty and boasting one of the great tenor arias of all time (“Vesti la giubba”).

Summer Reads
Chill with a Book by Some of Our Favorite Florida Authors As much fun as you’ll have this summer on a boat, in a kayak or floating in the pool, sometimes nothing beats sitting on a couch in a cold room and escaping into a book. In case you don’t have a stack of “books to read” waiting for you, pick up these reads by Gulf Coast authors. “Grounds for Murder” St. Petersburg writer Tara Lush introduced this new series in December. She tells us the fictional city has a lot of Gulfport in it. Like this? Read “Cold as Cream” next. “Stingers: A Sharks Incorporated Novel” Although he lives a few hours south of us, with the advent of his new Doc Ford’s on the St. Petersburg Pier, we’re making Randy Wayne White an honorary local. The second installment of his YA series, “Sharks Incorporated,” promises to
delight just as much as the first. Also, it’s labeled YA, but we loved it every bit as much as his books for grown-ups. Like this? Read “Fins” next. “The Newcomer” Mary Kay Andrews may not live along the Gulf Coast anymore, but that doesn’t stop her from visiting and setting her delightful murder/romance stories here. This one takes place at a mom-and-pop hotel in Treasure Island. Like this? Read “Sunset Beach” next. “Florida Scrub Jay: Field Notes on a Vanishing Bird” Take an armchair road trip across Florida with USF St. Petersburg professor Mark Jerome Walters in his quest to find Florida’s most endangered bird. This slim tome is decidedly un-academic, fascinating and fun. Like this? Read Craig Pittman’s “Cat Tale” next.

Step Up Your Summer Grilling Game with Fresh New Eats By Morgan Banno

Method: Wash and drain all produce. Quarter peaches and remove pits. Grill peaches over high heat for approximately three minutes or until grill marks are present. Assemble ingredients on top of a bed of fresh arugula, with burrata ball in the middle and prosciutto arranged around the greens. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and dust with salt and cracked black pepper to taste.

or, but white cauliflower is equally as tasty. Not only is cauliflower packed with essential nutrients and vitamins but it’s one of the most versatile vegetables on the market. Nothing screams Florida barbecue like a whole grilled fish! Put those quarantine culinary skills to good use with this impressive grilled snapper with gremolata and lemon recipe. Great grilling recipes don’t need to be complicated. And finally, no grilling menu is complete without dessert. Just about anything can be prepared in a cast iron skillet to keep with your outdoor summer soiree theme and popcorn is no different. Not only is my recipe for grilled popcorn delish, but it’s ultra light, so it won’t sit like cement in your stomach after a full meal.
MORGAN BANNO
As Florida’s summer brews, it’s time to brush off those grill grates and stock up on charcoal because grilling season is here! Spending the last decade as a Michigander-turned-Floridian, I grill year round, even through the temperamental afternoon storms. It’s tough to beat those sexy char marks on grilled fresh produce or the smoky aftertaste of a grilled steak. Sure, burgers, hot dogs and ribs are classic fare for a backyard barbecue, but this summer is a great time to step up your grilling game. With an abundance of fresh vegetables and Gulf seafood at our fingertips, the possibilities for grilled goodness are endless! (Note that all of my recipes assume your grill is cleaned, oiled and ready to cook!) Peaches are in season earlier than usual this year because of the temperate winter weather, and their natural sugars caramelize to perfection on the grill, making even the most novice griller look professional. So, kick off your menu with my grilled peach and prosciutto salad – refreshing but full of flavor, balancing acidity with the creamy burrata and salty prosciutto. Peppery arugula completes the dish, but spring mix is also a great substitute for a milder flavor or swap nectarines in place of peaches for an extra tart zing. Looking for something more classic? With only five ingredients, my grilled romaine salad is a cinch. Be sure to wash your romaine well as dirt and sediment tends to stick near the butt end of the lettuce. For vegetarians and vegans who dread eating yet another grilled portobello mushroom at carnivore-centric summer get-togethers, grilled cauliflower steaks are hearty, zesty and completely plant-based. I used purple cauliflower for maximum col-

Method: Depending on how large your fish is, cut 3-4 diagonal slits across the flesh and through the back bone on both sides. Stuff the cavity and slits with lemon wheels. Spread mixture liberally on both sides of the fish. Oil a grill basket and carefully lay fish in basket on grill over high heat. Grilled Snapper with Gremolata and Lemon Serves four Ingredients: 1 whole fish (cleaned, gutted and descaled)
Method: Turn grill on high, roaring heat. Pour oil into a skillet, top with lid and heat cast iron. Once the skillet is hot, carefully pour kernels in the oil (making sure they are not completely submerged - you’re still grilling, not deep frying) and cover the skillet with a lid. Wearing an oven mitt, gently shake the skillet every 30 seconds to avoid burning the kernels. Once you hear popping, do not open the lid! Keep shaking skillet until popping ceases. Carefully remove skillet from the heat and dress popcorn with your favorite seasoning.

obituaries Our dearest Bobby (Robert A. Smith) passed away and is greatly missed by his family, his loving wife Joyce, loyal son Robert, sweet daughters Marjorie Wikoff and Joylyn Smith, siblings, grandchildren, many good friends and hungry dogs – all are lonely. Bobby had been the sexton of the Pass-a-Grille Church for many years. He also was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion in Gulfport. We miss our gentle, fun, loving Bobby. Our prayer is that the good Lord will take care of him and we will all be together in heaven someday. Our memories will be forever present of someone who was special to so many people and hungry pups, too. God bless you all – Bob’s family SMITH FAMILY
Their life deserves more than five lines. We make sharing it affordable.
Remember your loved ones forever with us. Free obituaries available; prices range from $10-$300 • Obituary on Legacy included In partnership with

Birds of a Feather?
Gulfport’s Bird Scene is Wild
PHYLLIS MARCUM
ROBERT BARTO
By Gabber Staff
Two eagle-eyed readers sent us photos of some wild sights in Gulfport! Phyllis Marcum snapped a shot of a peahen – that’s a lady peacock – strutting down Beach Boulevard on an early morning walk, and Robert and Kasara Barto got friendly with a small screech owl hanging out in their Ward 4 backyard. Got a wild photo? Send it to news@thegabber.com.

LOCAL EXPERT!
A real customer testimonial for Marie: It was a pleasure working with Marie Drew. Her Real Estate and marketing expertise as well as her knowledge of the Gulfport, Florida market, priced our home for a really quick sale at the asking price. While there were issues to be resolved due to an inspection report, Marie was very helpful in providing resources to make things right. Selling and leaving a home one loves is a trying time; however, Marie kept me focused and provided the reassurance I needed on a daily basis to get through the total experience. I will definitely recommend Marie in the future!
