Gulfport Icon Keith Stillwagon Dies at 77 Gulfport has lost an artistic legend.

After nearly three months battling health issues, including contracting COVID-19 in hospital care, Gulfport muralist Keith Stillwagon died on Saturday, October 30 at the age of 77.

The artist had just made it home from a rehabilitation facility when he was almost immediately transported back to the hospital with pneumonia.

Stillwagon – a cowboy with a paintbrush – left his mark with marvelously colored murals adorning many Gulfport locations, including Gulfport Garage, the Historic Peninsula Inn and SumitrA Espresso Lounge.

Born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1944, Stillwagon grew up in Flint, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Michele Stillwagon, who remembers him as “an artist through and through.” Michele, who was not able to physically see Keith for much of his last months due to COVID pro-

Historian Jason Vuic Looks at the Past and Present of Florida Development In the 1950s, Florida’s population was 2.8 million. Miami, still a small southern city, was just a winter tourist spot, and the interior was millions of acres of uninhabited prairies of pines and palmettos, home to herds of cattle, and seemingly endless orange groves.

Tampa and St. Petersburg were the only large towns along the Gulf coast. Naples was still just a small fishing village, and even Orlando was only a business hub for the surrounding citrus and cattle industry.

“The Swamp Peddlers: How Lot Sellers, Land Scammers, and Retirees Built Modern Florida and Transformed the American Dream” by historian Jason Vuic (University of North Carolina Press) shows the transformation of old Florida, from acres of eco-sensitive wetlands, pine forests and cattle ranches, to today’s subdivisions sprawling across the state, devouring natural ecosystems.

But that soon changed, and Vuic guides readers through elaborate schemes that became stereotypes nationwide, setting up today’s culde-sac society.

Vuic’s engaging tale will make nature lovers scream, but by the 1970s, there’s some awareness, and a few champions emerge, working for more stringent regulations. Dredgeand-fill ended, but millions of acres of mangrove forest and seagrass still struggle. And with statistics of 1,000 new residents arriving daily, the future of Florida’s nature remains uncertain.

While his work will live on in tribute to the artist, Keith will also be remembered as a gentle, motorcycle-loving friend to the community.

“Keith, he was a very gentle soul, and an extremely creative one,” fellow artist and friend, Gulfport photographer Larry Busby, said. “He liked to ride steel horses, and anything he did, he did it well.”

Michele and friends are working to arrange a funeral for Keith at Bay Pines National Cemetery.

The two met in Gulfport circa 2000, but both coincidentally grew up in Flint without knowing each other.

It’s possible Michele may not have recognized Keith in his early life – a stark contrast to the free-loving man many will remember.

According to Michele, the muralist served as a police officer in Sebring, Florida and in the Army in the Vietnam War, and had stories from childhood that painted his early days as a state of constant “trouble.”

The young artist drew flyers for his friends in Catholic school, and was disciplined by the nuns for daydreaming. He lived with a father who didn’t approve of his tendency to favor the creative side of life, said Michele.

“He would sit up in the attic and study artists...Leonardo Di Vinci, and such,” Michele said. “His father wanted him to play football when he was younger.”

“I don’t know, I think it would be nice if they left it unfinished,” said Busby.

According to Jax Taylor, close friend of Stillwagon and owner of Jax In and Out, that’s the plan.

Instead of hiring another artist to complete the work, the landlord has decided to leave the mural untouched, as a tribute to Stillwagon.

Taylor is working on getting a permanent memorial mounted to the wall above it. “[We] lost a really good man and a really good artist,” Taylor said. “To me, it’s unbelievable...I’m going to miss him....”

Gulfport Seniors Help Nab Guinness Title

Bingo players from Gulfport’s Multipurpose Senior Center participated in the Guinness World Record​​ title for the “most viewers of a Bingo livestream on a bespoke platform” on Friday, October 22 at the Gulfport Casino.

A mouthful, the world record was successfully claimed with viewers clicking in from behind the screen

from across 26 states at over 125 locations.

The record-setting event was put on by Televeda, an active aging online platform. The organization is still putting together a final head count.

On Friday, Gulfport’s participants piled into the Casino Ballroom, where seniors sat through several

test events and even a 30-minute pre-record-setting shut down at the host center that threw Televeda staff into a tech frenzy.

“We’ll be honest: It was stressful.

But the show must go on. We improvised. Switched around the location, laptops, host and a lot more behind the scenes,” Televeda wrote in a press release.

Owners Michelle and Allan Bishop Make Part-time Move to Canada Though most of the details are still hazy, major Gulfport business owners and investors Michelle and Allan Bishop announced on Facebook October 26 that they will be moving back to Canada, at least part time, to rejoin family.

Michelle told the Gabber that the Bishops have sold downtown hotspots Gulfperk Coffee Bar Inc. at 3107 Beach Blvd. S. and Italian-American restaurant Tutto Bene, at 3038 Beach Blvd. S. The Bishops’ Bishop Co. Holdings owns the land that the Tiki Bar & Grille and Gulfport Brewery + Eatery sit on, but there will be no changes in either establishment, according to Michelle.

“I think a lot of people are confused and think that we are leaving for good,” Michelle said. “We are still living in Gulfport for half of the year.”

St. Pete Beach Home to a New Indoor Skatepark

Once a skater, always a skater.

At least that’s the case for Kenny Michaels who, along with his wife and their three kids, sold their house in Arizona and moved to Florida in the midst of a pandemic to open the only indoor skate park and skate shop in St. Pete Beach.

On August 21, Koncrete Party Skateboards opened its doors to a 3,001 sq. ft. skate park and skate shop at 7470 Gulf Blvd.

“I think every kid has the dream to build something really cool or create something really cool. [For me] it was my dream skateshop,” Michaels said.

When Michaels was 16 he dedicated his afternoons to his family’s car shop, customizing cars and consequently breathing in toxic fumes and exhaust. Being a young entrepreneur, Michaels designed a back-up plan to escape the car business, putting his profits toward a skateboard business.

Eventually, he started developing and designing skate decks – the “board” part of a skateboard. However, when Michaels tried to find a distributor, he ran into elitism within the industry.

“Everybody is taking the biggest companies up front and taking their orders and the small companies don’t get any orders in, so it’s hard for us to print our own graphics for our boards,” Michaels said. “Hopefully the indus-

Gulfport Police to Ask Council for Younger Pension Age The Gulfport Police Department (GPD) plans to make a presentation to City of Gulfport proposing that, regardless of age, city officers who served within the department for 25 years or longer should be eligible for retirement – a change that would allow GPD officers to retire at 46 at the youngest.

Currently, GPD hires at 21 and requires that officers serve 25 years and be at least 52 years of age before retiring.

“Police officers die at an abnormally early age,” said GPD officer Jason Motte, one of the officers vying for the change. “Every other agency in the area has a similar requirement as this. We’re hurting for good police officers at the moment, and this would work as an incentive.”

The Tampa and Clearwater police departments allow for retirement after 20 years of service with no age minimum, and Clearwater hires officers at 18 years old.

“Thirty years on the streets, arresting people that don’t want to be arrested, getting in fights...there’s a reason we die young,” Motte said.

Currently, Gulfport Police Chief Robert Vincent is the sole officer who has been with the GPD for longer than the proposed 25 years, according to a records request.

The Gabber asked Vincent if he would consider retiring if the ordinance was approved.

“No, I would not,” Vincent said.

“I’d have to take a pay cut, and buy health insurance. I like Gulfport; I think I’ll be around for a while.”

“Officers don’t just get in front of council; they have a pension board that was elected that will present it to our city council,” O’Reilly said. “I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves.”

It’s unclear when the pension board will get the chance to state their case for earlier retirement, but it won’t be in November.

“The city manager thought it best to pump the brakes on the presentation until negotiations over the contract are over,” Motte said. “Putting the pension issue in that contract is

not typically done, apparently.”

The process of asking council to propose the ordinance isn’t entirely standard, but deemed the fastest way by the police pension board and O’Reilly.

“We’re not asking them to reach for the stars, but we’re asking for industry standards,” Motte said at the Thursday meeting.

The city would foot the bill for the pension changes but the details are still up in the air – as is the date for the first step of the process.

“Mr. O’Reilly needs to be a part of this process – that’s the preferred way,” Motte said. “His insight would be very helpful.”

Moving Parts The GPD discussed presenting the proposal to Gulfport Council at a pension board meeting Thursday, October 22.

Originally, the board was to ask council at the upcoming November 16 meeting, but that was pushed back by a man who the GPD says supports it, Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly.

Gulfport Celebrates the Late Larry Enlow with a Party in the Park

Larry Enlow’s Celebration of Life brought musicians and music lovers to Gulfport’s Veteran’s Park as a tribute to the musician on Saturday, October 30.

It was a party Larry Enlow would have been proud of.

That’s the consensus after Enlow’s Celebration of Life Concert in Gulfport’s Veteran’s Park on Saturday, October 30.

Swarms of people – local and from out of state – came to Gulfport to dance, sing and listen to a lineup of musicians close to the late Gulfport musician and artist benefactor’s heart.

Veteran’s Park saw sets of Enlow’s favorite songs by band members from the three Cajun bands he was a part of: Atlanta Swamp Opera, the Gulfport Ramblers and the Gulfport Swamp Opera.

“It wasn’t no sad memorial,” said photographer friend Larry Busby.

“It was a party Larry would have planned himself.”

The celebration served as a fundraiser for Larry Enlow and wife Maureen Kilroy’s nonprofit for the arts, The Enroy Foundation Inc. With Enlow gone, Kilroy is continuing the foundation’s role of supporting visual and performing arts in the area.

Kilroy herself performed in many of the sets, and ended the night with an emotional version of Enlow’s favorite song, one that he chose for his brother’s memorial, “This Little Light of Mine.”

“I put together a program with all types of music that Larry played, and that he loved,” Kilroy said.

Songs from the Past Enlow died September 11 of this year after contracting a breakthrough case of COVID-19. His death rocked the Gulfport community, but Saturday’s concert was about celebrating his life.

“We had people dancing and singing along and letting their little lights shine,” Kilroy said. “Everything he did, everyday, I miss everything about him.”

The park was transformed into a type of outdoor dance floor, a community effort by the City of Gulfport and residents.

The focal point of the night, five hours of music, was an emotional journey for many of the attendees, including former Gulfport Swamp Opera band member Bruce Waters.

“Music and dance was such a big part of his life. I miss his encouragement; he could bring things out of people that you didn’t even know you had in you,” the musician said.

Waters played in several sets at the celebration, and was a longtime musical partner of Enlow and Kilroy.

“We played mountain music... swing...vocal harmonies...it was beautiful,” Waters said. “It was a fluid situation, very musical.”

A large white van struck a much smaller moped on 26th Avenue South and 49th Street, injuring the moped driver before speeding off in a hit and run on Tuesday, October 26, according to Gulfport police (GPD).

The moped driver, George Augustine, 70, was taken to a nearby hospital as a trauma alert on Tuesday; police are still looking for the driver of the van, and urging the public to

“The van has been described as a white van with a blue logo on the side and bubbles. This could possibly be a pool cleaning company,” the GPPD posted on Facebook on Tuesday. “The van is similar in style to those used by Amazon delivery, such as a Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter or Ram Promaster.”

The driver was described as a white male with dark hair and a dark

beard and was seen travelling westbound on 26th Avenue South immediately after the incident.

“There have been no leads in this case at this time,” GPPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Thomas Woodman told the Gabber on Wednesday, October 27.

Shara Bunis Wins Gulfport Merchants Artist Grant

It wasn’t long ago that Gulfport resident and artist Shara Bunis was working in the corporate world, managing grant money for the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

A seasoned photographer and watercolor artist, Bunis made a full career 180° and is this year’s recipient of the Gulfport Merchant Chamber’s Rise and Shine Emerging Artist Grant.

“I was actually really surprised, and a little bit panicked at first,” Bunis said. “It’s not really about the money; it’s about how this helps you grow.”

The initial grant rings in at $500, and equates to lucrative artist resources such as a spot in the juried Gulfport Fine Arts Festival, five booth spots in the Gulfport First Friday Art Walk and a local mentorship program with Brenda McMahon.

The subjects in her work are tangible, often life-like – a butterfly or a shipwrecked boat from Hurricane Eta – but painted through the rainy gaze of watercolor.

“I tend to be a literal person; I see the world in detail,” Bunis, who has a knack for macro photography, said.

“When I started painting, I wanted to

be a loose, flowy, watercolor person.

Turns out, my style is more about the details.”

The Albany native uses her closeup style to highlight forgotten minutiae like the hairs on an insect’s legs.

The Details Bunis first visited the Gulfport area in 2005 for a business trip, and it took her over a decade to set roots in town. After officially moving from Pennsylvania in 2015, she’s let the flavor of the city take her work to new places.

“I never intended to sell my work,”

“She saw I had talent and a passion,” Bunis said. “I’m still a little amazed by that.”

What’s next for the grant winner? It depends.

“If something resonates with me, I

paint it,” Bunis said. “It’s hard for me to plan...I’m known to get up at 8 p.m. and start painting something, anything. I stick to...what feels good.”

Gulfport’s Artists Bring All the Buyers to the Yard

A new local tradition, Art in the Yard is a city-wide art sale put on by Gulfport-livin’ artists.

Saturday, November 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. marks second time local artists will transform the town into an outdoor art gallery. Art lovers can navigate the event via the City of Gulfport’s website, says Karen Love, one of the event creators.

“I’m really proud of this as an event, because this is something put on by Gulfport artists for the public with absolutely zero budget,” said Love, who is also one of the participating artists.

Love and Gulfport resident Margo Dalgetty put on Art in the Yard last March with an eye toward making it a twice-yearly art tradition.

Luckily, it panned out.

“It’s the same concept, but we have a much better brochure and extended hours,” Love said. “This time around we have 55 stops with

90-some artists participating. “ The online brochure shows the address of art hot spots and the names of the content creators showing at each location.

There is one stipulation: Artists must live in Gulfport, with no exceptions.

However, many sellers are combining forces on yards with more ample real estate.

In Love’s case, she is selling her whimsical Florida creatures with a bonus holiday series.

“I’m picturing a lot of potential Christmas gifts because we are so close to December,” Love said. “But you won’t see any snow – it’s all Christmas by the beach.”

“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store.
