Some weeks make it easier than others for us to find gratitude, and, this year especially, it can feel like the universe is holding you against the wall and kicking you.

And yet, we have bright spots of light that shine through the gray cloud of 2020. Simple things, like discovering Shipt and realizing you never have to brave a grocery store, or the weather changing to allow an occasional breeze. Some things we’re grateful for are much bigger, like watching our community come together to help each other in the face of huge uncertainty.

I have a list of things for which I’m grateful, but I’m saving them for our Gratitude issue on November 26.

I hope you’ll join me in sharing everything for which you’re grateful, big and small. It may sound incongruous, because of all the years to focus on gratitude, 2020 hasn’t offered an abundance. Nevertheless, good things do exist, and when you open the November 26 issue, you’ll see how your neighbors have found gratitude throughout the year.

In the article we ran last week, “The Future of Yacht Club Up for Debate,” we reported that Boca Ciega Yacht Club leases out “to members and non-members for a monthly or quarterly fee.” This should have read: “to residents and nonresidents.” We apologize for the error.

We also wish to further clarify the terms of the BCYC’s lease with the City of Gulfport. While BCYC’s current lease, signed in 2008, does state that the city “provides 56 wet slips and 50 dry storage slips for the exclusive use of BCYC,” the article didn’t make it clear that these slip rental fees get paid directly to the City of Gulfport, not to BCYC, and they are not discounted. Members and nonmembers alike pay the city slip rates, tiered for residents and non-residents. The BCYC does not collect any money for slip rentals, nor do their members receive discounted rates.

The “exclusive use” of these slip spaces amounts to a “right of refusal” for the BCYC. In other words, if the BCYC does not use the slip, the city can then rent it out.

Additionally, per the BCYC’s lease with the city, the club is responsible for property taxes, insurance, maintenance, signage and security of the property.

As for the report issued by The Pinellas County Office of Human Rights on June 5, 2019 regarding ADA compliance, the Gabber has confirmed that this report was withdrawn by the complainant.

The Gabber apologizes for any confusion the article may have caused.

Keep Up the Good Work Dear Editor: Your recent series “A Grave Situation,� inspired me to donate. I lived in Gulfport for many years and I loved the small-town feeling of it. (The frequent flooding drove me out.) At the library, I’d always pick up a copy of the “Gulfport Gabber,� as it was then called.

It was always fun to glance through it, but it rarely had anything more than passing interest to Gulfport residents.

So this is a real change! I appreciate your efforts to give the newspaper some real substance with this excellent and timely series. Also, I don’t want to forget to mention the interesting article on the Longleaf Pines [“Return of the Majestic Longleaf Pines,� October 22, 2020] and their role in Florida history.

I’m now picking up the Gabber at the Gulfport Library, which I started using again since it now has become almost easier to break into a bank than get into the St. Pete libraries – a bit of a unfortunate overreaction, even in these unprecedented times!

Gulfport City Hall and facilities will close for Thanksgiving, November 26 and 27.

The city will collect Thursday’s sanitation routes Wednesday, November 25; Friday’s routes will remain on schedule.

For 29 years, Gulfport Police Department employees have sponsored “Operation Santa” to give toys to needy children in Gulfport. In August, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced that he would start looking into body-worn cameras for his deputies.

Gualtieri has, in the past, been reluctant about the use of body-worn cameras. Since June, over 2,300 people have signed an online petition calling for officer accountability in the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office in the form of body cameras.

On Wednesday, October 28, Gualtieri implemented the body-worn camera trial program at the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the PCSO’s news release, “recognizing the public’s desire for body-worn cameras and the sheriff’s own desire to maintain absolute transparency, the program will initially outfit 30 deputies for a field trial.”

If the field trial is successful, eventually PCSO will outfit more than 800 deputies with the technology.

“The program will cost approximately three million dollars per year for the next five years and will include the body-worn camera, TASER, a new in-car video system and holster activation, which will work in conjunction with one another,” according to the PCSO’s news release.

Gualtieri selected manufacturer Axon, formerly known as Taser International, to supply the technology.

community that overwhelmingly supports and wants these cameras, and I am committed to making that happen.”

The St. Petersburg Police Department has also been approved for a five-year contract with the same manufacturer, Axon, for body-worn cameras.

On Thursday, October 15 during a presentation to St. Petersburg City Council, SPPD Assistant Chief Antonio Gilliam said that the contract with Axon will provide SPPD with 500 body-worn cameras and 450 mobile video systems for patrol cars, as well as the software and ownership of the video footage.

Gulfport’s Police Department’s own body-worn cameras work similarly to the Axon technology adopted by SPPD and the PCSO. The camera will automatically activate when an officer’s firearm is removed from its holster, or when a taser is removed from a holster and in the ready-to-fire mode. Cameras in the patrol cars automatically activate when the overhead lights are turned on.

Gilliam explained that SPPD policy will require the officer to turn the camera on when they begin duty and leave it on until their shift ends.

Gulfport’s ProjectFREE Needs You

Now that election season is over, it’s time to turn your attention – and assistance – to local nonprofits making a difference in the community. On Saturday, November 14 get ready to don your blue suede shoes and dance the afternoon away for a good cause – or several of them. ProjectFREE will host their 1st Annual Spirit of The Community event to help raise awareness and donations for local nonprofits.

ProjectFREE is an adult daytraining program that focuses on performing arts programs for young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities, including theater arts, a rock band academy, and an art gallery where each artist receives 100% profit from each piece of art sold.

ProjectFREE has teamed up with Miracle By The Bay, a sister nonprofit organization, to feature other nonprofit groups. Organizers hope to help the nonprofits raise money and introduce them to the community.

“We really need a call to action to work on helping with different parts of our community,” said ProjectFREE co-founder Sharon Vanderlinde. “It just makes sense for us to bridge the charities and the communities.”

This year, of course, help is especially important.

“Due to COVID-19, there are a

lot more people in need of help this year,” said Vanderlinde. “So, we chose to showcase these organizations to the community.”

The event, at the ProjectFREE Performing Arts Center, 2026 51st St. S., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., will host a variety of nonprofits, each with their own booth where attendees can sign up for services, look into volunteer opportunities and donate Feeding Tampa Bay will host a food drive during the event and is looking for non-perishable items.

Celebrate Birthdays, an organization that gifts birthday presents to underprivileged children and those in foster care, will host a toy drive during the event. They will also have cupcakes and lemonade for sale.

Voters Turn Out for Local, National Elections On Tuesday, November 3, voters in Pinellas County voted for candidates from the president to property appraiser, and on six state amendments.

Over 560,000 eligible voters utilized their right to vote in Pinellas – a near 80% turnout.

Multiple local and national-level organizations stepped up efforts to increase voter turnout and voter registration this year, making the election one for the history books.

The Biden/Harris and Trump/Pence tickets received the most and second-most votes, respectively, of any presidential election in 120 years, according to the US Elections Project, a nonpartisan data website run by University of Florida professor Michael McDonald.

According to the Associated Press, “as of Sunday, the tallied votes accounted for 62% of the eligible voting-age population in the U.S. That’s a 0.4 percentage point increase so far over the rate hit in 2008,” and votes in some U.S. counties are still being tallied.

“While the results illustrate the deep divisions in our country, and the inequities caused by gerrymandering, systemic racism and other political maneuverings, there may still be some positive glimmers in this election,” said Ingrid Bredenberg, organizer of Gulfport Votes 100%, a non-partisan effort to engage local voters. “Significantly more people than ever voted in this election. More than 146.6 million people cast ballots, up from just under 129 million in 2016. More youth voted than ever before, up 10% in some states. Unlike 2016, the winner [of the presidential race] won both the electoral vote and the popular vote.”

Gulfport increased voter registration by 5.2%, though official voter turnout numbers for the city had not been released by press time.

“Whatever the actual numbers, the real work is how people choose to respond and find areas of common interest and respect,” said Bredenberg. “This will be the hard work of a democratic system that allows people to vote for their representatives, both local and national, and then have to live with the outcomes.”

Webb conceded to former St. Pete Beach Commissioner Linda Chaney early in the evening, saying that statistically, she would not be able to pull ahead in the race.

“I am not a stranger to public service,” Webb told the crowd. “This was just one way of serving. There are many ways to serve. I will stay engaged like I have been and continue to make sure that we’re putting our community first.”

On Saturday, November 7, shortly after media outlets announced the presidential election results, local business Custom House Decor posted a party invitation on their Facebook page.

“We’re planning a celebration tonight in Gulfport that the election has been decided. Very impromptu.

Come join us,” read the post.

Brenda McMahon, owner and operator of Brenda McMahon Gallery, kept the gallery’s doors open past closing, providing a place for those who wanted to celebrate the presidential election results.

“I heard the announcement today and there was all this energy on the street,” said McMahon. “I turned to my friend and said, ‘We have to have a dance party.’

“After four years of heartbreak and difficulty, this party is about releasing all of that energy,” McMahon continued. “It’s about humanity and compassion coming back to the White House and to our lives.”

Said Gulfport resident Jill Jenkins on Saturday, “We’ve got the best party on the block.”

Football Finds a New Normal at Boca Ciega

It’s Thursday afternoon at Boca Ciega High School, where the Pirates are having their last practice before their game against Hollins High School. They’re already guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, but a win on the 30th would puts them in line to be district champions. It’s the last week of October and still 86 degrees out, making the track around the field smell like burnt rubber. One of the coaches keeps energy high with a speaker blasting Migos, Future and a lot of Drake.

Things are surprisingly normal for a team experiencing its first season since the COVID-19 outbreak – a fact that can make it harder for sports programs to keep their students safe. “At the beginning of the year, it was like a three-headed monster,â€? says Max Smith, Boca Ciega’s head football coach. “You had COVID, you had heat and you had lightning. Two of them don’t want you outside‌ and the third head, COVID, doesn’t want you inside.â€?

Starting in June, the Pinellas County School Board laid down a list of rules and guidelines for each sport, adjusting these as the year goes on. Regulations are tightest for indoor sports, and sports with full contact. Indoor sports like volleyball have strict limits on spectators – the county requires masks for all players during practice and before and after games. All equipment, including the ball, is wiped down and disinfected after each game and practice.

The county rolled out new football regulations in three summer “phases,” starting in June, with the current rules laid out for the fall semester. At the start of the summer, athletes couldn’t use indoor facilities like locker rooms and weight rooms at all; coaches gave temperature scans and a COVID questionnaire to all the players at the start of each practice; and the county set tight limits as to how many players could practice, and for how long.

“One thing that I did was, once I got the OK from the county, and our trainer, I’d show up three hours before workouts and pretty much carry the whole weight room outside every day,” said Coach Smith.

On August 3, the county allowed workouts in indoor weight rooms again, but with limits, so Bogie staff set up a factory-efficient method: one student would do reps, a coach sprayed down the equipment and then waved in the next student, as quickly as possible.

It’s worth noting that, according to PCSB, only six BCHS students have tested positive for COVID-19 since school resumed. It’s unclear if any of those are sports-related.

The county’s fall-semester rules are far more relaxed by comparison to summer, and the players seem less motivated to keep up with them. Athletes are required to bring their own water bottles, to be refilled via hoses connected to a shared water tank. But when coaches aren’t looking, players will sometimes spray the water directly into their face or mouth to stay fresh in the roasting heat. With only a handful of coaches on staff, and already limited time to practice, Smith says it’s hard to enforce the dozens of rules related to water, distance and masks.

“I think some of the kids’ mentality is ‘Coach, I was just outside for two hours tackling, blocking, laying [on] and grabbing my teammates, but now when I come inside I have to wear a mask?’” said Coach Smith.

Talking to the players, their biggest COVID concern seems to be the new PCSB cap on attendance, which only allows 25% stadium capacity, for both the home and visitor team.

“It’d usually be packed and loud; we liked that,” said one team captain.

“It helps the team when it’s at full capacity,” said another.

Despite all the changes, Bogie’s performance seems to have held up well. When October 30 rolled around, the Pirates crushed Hollins High 36-0, securing the district championship.

Shop Local for the Holidays LocalShops1’s annual, weekend-long Shopapalooza is canceled this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t support local business during the holidays. A one-day Shop Small Holiday Market replaces Shopapalooza this November in Gulfport.

Gulfport will close Beach Blvd. S. to vehicle traffic on November 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and transform into a wonderland of local makers, selling goods they’ve crafted in their workshops all year long.

“Shopapalooza has been canceled this year, but we plan to be back at Vinoy Park in downtown St. Pete Thanksgiving weekend 2021,” LocalShops1 founder Ester Venouziou told the Gabber. “The festival is just too big and has too many interactive components – children’s zone, activity zone for adults, lots of tastings at the food booths – for a pandemic year.”

The Gulfport Merchants Chamber co-hosts the market along with the City of Gulfport, and will adhere to CDC event protocols, like other local events.

“Since the GMC has already started the Tuesday market and the monthly art walks, they have the proper CDC safety protocols and trained volunteers for events. So partnering with them and having the event here logistically made a lot of sense, rather than us having to ‘reinvent the wheel,’” said Venouziou. “I talked with several business owners along Beach Boulevard to get their input on whether having a holiday market here would benefit their business. Everyone was happy to hear about this possibility and told me to go for it.”

The market will top out at 100 local makers and small businesses – 150 fewer vendors than the traditional Shopapalooza event.

Along with distancing requirements, vendors will wear masks and organizers will encourage guests to wear masks.

Gulfport STRONG volunteers will distribute free masks, courtesy of Visit St. Pete Clearwater and the City of Gulfport.

Guests can avail themselves of hand sanitizer and hand washing stations throughout the market.

“We have a really great selection of vendors, and I think shoppers will be impressed,” said Venouziou. “In addition to the awesome vendor lineup, I’d like to remind everyone who comes to our holiday market to support the brick-andmortar shops and restaurants.”

Market Incident Spotlights Rules for Mobile Vendors

On Tuesday, October 27, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce called the police on Jesse Lee, a mobile food vendor, who had set up his mobile ice cream cart on Beach Boulevard South near Let it Be Ice Cream shop, during the Gulfport Tuesday Morning Fresh Market.

Once the police arrived, Lee started recording the interaction with Gulfport police and GMC President Barbara Banno; he posted it on Facebook.

In the video, Banno asked Lee to leave the market boundaries. The GMC holds the special events permit from the city for the Tuesday market, and Lee had not applied to participate in the event or, GMC administration told the Gabber, any other GMC events. The city’s agreement with the GMC requires the GMC to allow only vendors who follow the GMC application process to participate in special events.

Activity in and around St. Petersburg’s stages is starting to ramp up again, as performing arts spaces innovate, create, and adjust their seasons on the fly. This week we bring you a roundup of theater news and local productions.

American Stage has not slowed down over the last few months, with a steady stream of virtual workshops and performances, including this month’s “Fairytales Reimagined: Stories for a New World.” Adapted from Grimm’s Fairytales by Sadie Lockhart, Patrick A. Jackson and Tiffany Ford, this digital performance is set during a power outage at Abuelo’s: Mateo and his older sister Isabella think there is nothing to do, but with a little imagination and the turn of a page from the family’s storybook, classic fairytales are reimagined and Abuelo helps Mateo and Isabella discover just how fun and powerful sharing stories can be.

The show brought its initial virtual run to a close on November 8, but was popular enough to warrant a set of new dates. It will play again on December 12 and 13.

Additionally, schools can access the performance for the remainder of the school year, along with an interactive study guide, a teacher-orientation guide, and a live virtual chat with the cast and crew. education@americanstage.org; americanstage.org

The MAR St. Pete The MAR St. Pete, a multipurpose performance space recently opened in the Grand Central District, is quickly becoming a hub for an unending stream of creative activity, from classes to rehearsals to performances, but founders Heather and Dave Lamar still wanted to carve out time to help their community of artists.

“Imagine this,” says Heather Hamar. “Life is going great.

You are an independent contractor making music for a living. Your calendar is full of gigs and you are confident that your income is on track for a successful month. Then in one quick swoop, all that confidence disappears due to something our world hasn’t seen for a hundred years.”

The Hamars have hosted online telethons on the first of each month to raise money for local performers struggling to make ends meet.

“Musicians were fired up to be in the shows – not only to get their art out to the world, but also to help the cause,” Hamar says. Through their nonprofit, ProjectMAR, Heather and Dave are selling “Let Music Be the Cure” t-shirts at a suggested donation of $25 each, with profits to help local.

Performers are also eager to pitch in.

“We opened an application form for musicians to start applying for help and we got 28 applications within about 48 hours,” says Hamar. “We had to shut it down soon after we opened it due to lack of funds to cover all the applications...what a great problem to have!” themarstpete.com.

St. Petersburg City Theatre Kids 9 to 17 can check out SPCT’s Youth Intensive Workshop facilitated by Melissa Dunn and Austin Bennett.

The workshop runs November 14 through January 30 – with topics like Basics of Theater and Theater Etiquette, Auditioning, Theatrical Design, Types of Performances, Vocal Intensive, Choreography, Theater vs. Film Performances – culminating in a showcase where students discuss and display their new skills.

“I love working with young performers because of their curiosity,” says Dunn. “In my experience, young performers are very excited to learn about anything and everything.”

The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance selected a lineup of renowned Florida artists with a spotlight on the Tampa Bay area.

“We wanted this year to be heavily focused on local and regional artists. So many artists here have been impacted

by COVID-19. Many have lost work and we wanted to do our part to support and create opportunities,” said Jenee Priebe, associate director at the SHINE Mural Office of the St. Pete Arts Alliance.

This year’s festival, now in its sixth year, was impacted by the pandemic as well.

“This will be the smallest festival we’ve produced,” said Priebe. “We’ll be creating 12 murals instead of the typical 20. Our budget is smaller, the walls were harder to secure this year, we’re doing far fewer events and we’re working hard to keep the artists and the public as safe as possible so the art can still shine.”

For one week, each selected artist will paint a mural on designated walls, some with other artists. According to Priebe, organizers chose walls based on factors such as visibility, location to other murals, size, texture and availability.

Each artist’s mural will highlight a different ocean issue relevant to the local environment. Some of the highlighted topics include sea level rise, plastic pollution, red tide, and at-risk species including manatees, rays and sharks.

We caught up with three local artists whose work is well-known to area art lovers and will be painting ocean-themed murals during this year’s festival, which runs through November 14.

something everyone can relate to.

I use insane characters to describe deep concepts.”

He recently created a mural with Derek Donnelly on the west wall of the Enoch Davis Community Center commissioned by the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area this year encouraging people to vote by mail. You can also see his work at the St. Pete ArtsXChange.

The SHINE mural will depict a wave pattern of harmful red algae blooms with fish and water underneath at Grand Central Brewhouse, at 2340 Central Avenue. iBOMS says he always liked to draw but didn’t think he could make a career of it.

“I used to drive around St. Pete and see all the murals and thought I’d never be at that level,” he says. “I hope I can set an example for another kid who thinks like that.”

clothing design and illustration. She loosely restricts herself to using the most basic colors and forms, focusing on primary colors and playful shapes.

Finding inspiration in everyday objects, her work reimagines what is often seen as mundane, creating beauty from the ordinary.

“I love the idea that such pure elements of design can come together in a composition that has never been executed in quite the same way,” she says.

Her mural, on the south wall of Brick Street Farms at 2233 3rd Ave. S., will focus on raising awareness about ocean plastic pollution.

shapes paired with illustrations to create a bright, playful mural that will hopefully create a sense of positivity and hope toward the idea of cleaning up our waterways. I wanted to take the opportunity to stay true to my colorful and abstract aesthetic and see how it works on a large scale.”

Mason Schwacke A longtime staple in the local creative scene, Mason Schwacke has been active in many galleries and art shows throughout the Tampa Bay area. He has painted murals for the past seven years, including one at Brick Street Farms.

“My art is primarily based around

childhood memories or dreams of mine. I play off a bright and uplifting color palette, generally utilizing an influence from my son.”

His mural, located at Hawk Diesel, 1400 Third Street South, will be a collaboration with artist Christian Thomas of Commitment Tattoo Shop.

Their composition will highlight four indigenous sea creatures classified as endangered, and Schwacke has been working with NOAA back and forth on the concept.

“I’m excited to be a part of SHINE this year. Some of my favorite living artists have contributed in years prior, and I believe it says something about the quality of what I do to be selected.”
