LEGACY IN JEOPARDY

In an article which dates back to the 1950s, it was claimed by Mrs. Shepstone (wife of the then Administrator of Natal), “Maritzburg has set an example in the provision of homes for the aged.” Now almost 62 years later residents are aggrieved by the treatment they are receiving at the well known “Allison's Homes” — situated in the CBD. Once again residents are infuriated by the treatment received towards them as well as their families. With claims of human rights being violated and the second complaint by the Allison's Homes community, this cannot be overlooked. Earlier this year, residents came forward stating that they felt like “prisoners” at the homes as their gate remotes had been confiscated for almost a year. Management backed these allegations up by “misuse” as families had been making duplicates of the controls and this went against the homes security measures. Ten months later residents feel a “breach” in their privacy as well as daily activities.

DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

To mark November as Diabetes Awareness Month, NetCare St Anne’s had partnered with Diabetes Nurse Educator, Kate Bristow and her team. Free glucose screenings and education was provided to the public on the 14 November at the hospital.

More than 300 million people have diabetes, and every year the figure grows by seven million. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in the lower and middle income countries, including South Africa.

Beneficiaries returned home empty handed on November 1, 2016 from the Pietermaritzburg SASSA offices with no answers as to why they did not receive their monies. They were asked to return on November 2, 2016. The 100 or so beneficiaries where told that the SASSA computer systems were down and to date have still not received any monies.

See page 10 for more on Diabetes Awareness.

‘’After visiting the offices twice three weeks back, at first they told us we will be paid in January 2017, then they changed their tune. They said we should check at the end of the month. I will go and check but I am scared of the outcome, “said Mahlengi Dludla, who receives child grants of R720 a month and is now just hoping for the best by the end of the month for her family. “What do we do if we do not receive any monies at all for November? When our children are hungry? When they told us they have a problem with their computer, we questioned how that happens. They said there are many people who are getting paid and that is causing the systems to shut down.”

PMB YOUTH

Hopeful Dludla will be at the SASSA offices at the end of the month expectant of receiving R1440 for her family.

CELEBRATING CONVERGING 51 YEARS IN FASHION EXCELLENCE!

The School of Fashion Design presented their 51st anniversary celebration in Fashion Excellence this weekend with yet another dazzling event at the City Hall. Headed by Priscilla Bhika, the school has served in educating the community in the exhilarating world of fashion, dressmaking and designing. Priscilla Bhika has put the term “ Fashion Industry” on the map and has given Fashion a whole new meaning – one of unparalleled glamour and prestige that has been an integral part of her success as well as the successes of those who have been a part of this glitzy industry throughout the years. The audience was treated to a spectacular evening, where style and creativity merged, featuring the most formidable collections of First and Second Year Graduates. Highlights on the runway included eco-chic, evening wear, haute couture and unique contemporary designs all Choreographed in outstanding sequels by Graduates and Models of Irene’s Modelling Agency. encouraging her as this competition is not an easy competition. The pressure and the challenges it brings every week may be daunting, yet she constantly delivers her best. With Vincent Bones having won from Eagle Christian Centre, the pressure was on Noma to do well and she has risen to the challenge. Expectations are high that Noma will bring the most coveted title in the music industry in SA back home once again.

“Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate globally. It is a complex, chronic condition that affects all areas of a person’s life and requires high quality care. To this end diabetes education is of critical importance and should be considered an integral part of diabetes prevention and care.” says diabetes specialist nurse, Kate Bistrow.

BENEFICIARIES GROW WEARY Requests for explanations from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) remain unanswered while some Pietermaritzburg go almost a month without receiving their monthly stipend.

PMB’S NOMA HAS IDOLS 2016 IN SIGHT Pietermaritzburg’s own, Noma Khumalo, is following the footsteps of former Idols SA Season 10 winner, Vincent Bones, from Eagle Christian Center. Noma Khumalo needs the city’s support one last time to grab the title of Idols SA season 12 winner. Student teacher, Noma, may love children, but music is in her blood. The 22 year-old from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, lives with her parents and younger brother. She began her singing career when she performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and she also became the lead singer for Acoustiq Assassins before becoming a finalist on Idols SA season 12.

Noma is a talented individual and she makes music with the instrument she was born with – her voice. She is a gifted vocalist that has entertained audiences from across South Africa. Noma believes in doing the best she can do and doing it with excellence. Pietermaritzburg’s Idols contestant, Noma Khumalo will battle it out on Sunday with one other contestant as the competition heats up. She never seems to disappoint her fans. Noma just debuted her brand new single "Want It to Feel Like It Did With You" live on the show this past Sunday. You can download the official studio version on iTunes. A reserved Noma Khumalo blew us out of our seats when she sang Rihanna's Stay. Judging by her performance, we have no doubt that Noma will win this competition. Noma nearly brought Unathi to tears. "The universe was in alignment and God was showing off.." Said Unathi to Noma after that riveting performance and we couldn't agree more.

This Sunday, 27 November people from across the city will be gathered at Eagle Christian Centre at 5pm to watch the show as they support to our local heroine Noma. Voting lines for Idols SA finalist, close on Thursday. To vote for Noma to win Idols SA season 12, SMS the Noma attended Eagle Christian Centre as her place of worship and she also was involved as a number 04 to 37400 (SMS’s cost R1,50) or add Idols SA on WeChat and follow the prompts. volunteer. It is finally summertime. Commemorating the longer, warmer and celebratory days. I have compiled a list of summer essentials to get you through this season.

Party Attire

Holiday Wear

LBD: The "Little black dress" (LBD) never fails. This classic piece always looks glamorous. Accessorise with chunky jewellery and a great pair of heels and you're good to go.

2 T-shirts 2 Tank Tops 2 Casual Shirts 1 Formal Top 1 Jacket

It's that time of the year again where we get to dress up as we bid farewell to this year. Be it for a work party of end of the year celebrations make sure you're prepared with some great formal outfit options.

Packing for a holiday can always be a tricky task. Most of us are guilty of over packing and we don't end up wearing half the items. So if you're off to a warm destination this holiday here's a little packing guideline:

BE WARY OF THOSE PHONE CALLS! A SCAM appearing to be targeting people possibly older persons - with landlines, has been brought to the attention of Galaxy News. The victim of the following is known to Galaxy News but for obvious reasons wishes to remain anonymous.

THE 'SILENT KILLER' DIABETES is recognised as the world's fastest growing chronic condition and is commonly known as the 'silent killer'. In KwaZulu-Natal, the disease is endemic, with more sufferers than in any other province in South Africa. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce enough of the blood glucose lowering hormone, insulin, or is unable to use it effectively. The pancreas is the gland which produces insulin which carries the sugar in the blood to the cells. In diabetes, the pancreas either fails to supply enough insulin or it doesn't work properly. There are two types of diabetes - Type 1 occurs when a person's immune system damages their insulin-producing cells, so they no longer produce enough insulin for their body. Type 1 diabetes generally begins in childhood or adolescence, although it can occur at any age. People with Type 1 diabetes are treated with multiple daily injections of insulin.

One of the important ways to manage diabetes is through your diet. Eat regular meals and snacks, based around starchy carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, pasta, rice and cereals. Cut down on sugar, salt and fats by choosing lean cuts of meat and lower fat dairy products, and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Cut out, or limit, alcohol consumption and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Check labels on foods carefully and choose those that do not feature sugar in the first three ingredients. Regular exercise is very important and should be taken three to four times a week for 20 to 50 minutes. Other ideas for everyday exercise include skipping daily - 50 - 100 skips; using the stairs instead of taking the lift; walking to the shops or parking further away. November is Diabetes Awareness Month, so it is a good opportunity to get yourself tested, as people often have diabetes without being aware of it. Some symptoms which could indicate that you have diabetes include: r r r r r r r r

About a month ago, the woman, a widow in her late 60's, received a phone call on her landline, from a person identifying himself as an employee of Microsoft, advising that her computer had been hacked into. At first, being suspicious, the woman questioned the caller, who asked if she was the owner and user of the home computer, and that she should go to her computer and switch it on, after which she would be taken through a process to rectify the matter. This she did, but still feeling it could be a scam, she kept on querying the authenticity of the caller, who eventually said he would call his supervisor. This 'supervisor' was very credible and even invited her to visit them at their offices, giving the street address in Johannesburg. He suggested that the hackers were foreigners who would be able to access all her personal details and information. After almost an hour and becoming increasingly worried about invasion of her privacy, the woman reluctantly gave bank details to the supervisor so that an amount of about R300 could be transferred to install a programme to resolve the matter.

inconvenience of having to change debit and credit card accounts. "I felt very stupid and cross with myself for having been duped," the woman told Galaxy News. "But in spite of my misgivings they were smooth operators and very convincing." However, this was not the end of the story. A few weeks later, this same woman received another phone call with a similar message from the caller. Being now more alert, she said she didn't own a computer and she was not interested. The line went dead. There was a further phone call a few days later, also on the landline, from someone saying they were from her bank (giving the name of the bank). The caller said that someone was trying to take a large amount of money from her credit card and that she should get her cell phone. The woman told Galaxy News: "As you can imagine, by this time I was becoming quite angry. I told the person that my bank never phones me on my landline, which is true, and that I didn't believe him and I would prefer to go into the bank personally to sort it out rather than do anything over the phone". At this, the line went dead.

"I'd just like to warn people to be very aware of any unsolicited calls on your landline, which cannot be traced or recorded. My feeling is that these people Fortunately, her bank picked up on it and the card get your number from the phone book and as most division phoned to say that someone was young people today only have cell phones, the attempting to withdraw monies from her account chances are that those with landlines are more likely much more than the amount mentioned. As a result, to be senior citizens, who are targeted because of no money was lost but the victim had the their vulnerability."

USE AN APP TO RENT A CAR

MOTORING PAGES San Francisco is Maven’s ninth city.

General Motors is bringing its car-sharing program to San Francisco where car ownership is quickly being displaced by alternatives. The automaker said that it’s bringing Maven, a program that includes renting cars by the hour, to San Francisco, its ninth U.S. city. Maven debuted in January and is already available in Ann Arbor, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington D.C.

MERCEDES-BENZ X-CLASS PICKUP PREVIEW It’s no secret that Mercedes-Benz’s Vans division will begin production of its X-Class pickups in late 2017 and that South Africa is one of the chosen markets. The Vans Division is M-B’s light commercial vehicles section; not to be confused with M-B Commercial Vehicles that builds hulking big trucks.

the town and doing the shopping, will at this stage be called “Stylish Explorer.” Hopefully M-B will move away from silly Chinese-sounding names by launch date. The mean beast with 35- x 11.5-inch tyres, and a winch on the front bumper, will go (please, no!) by the name “Powerful Adventurer.”

Much has been written and much of that is superficial, so here’s what we know so far:

There will probably be some 4x2s in the mix, but the top version will have 4Matic all-wheel drive spiced up with an electronic traction system, a transfer case with reduction gear and two differential locks. The traction system and electrically operated on-demand differential locks channel power to where traction is best. Under extreme off-road conditions, the rear- and inter-axle differentials can be locked, making it possible to safely master difficult obstacles and inclines.

The pickups were developed under strategic co-operation with the Renault-Nissan (and now also Mitsubishi) alliance and will be built at Nissan’s Barcelona plant for Europe, Australia-New Zealand and South Africa. Latin American versions are to be manufactured in Córdoba, Argentina, from 2018 onward. A recent product of this co-operative arrangement is the current range of Smart cars.

Both will be luxury vehicles fitted with leather The ladder frame chassis apparently comes from upholstery and upmarket trim, C- and V-Class Nissan Navara but all panels and fittings are pure M-B. components, high-end infotainment systems, Mercedes me connectivity services and the same Three engines will be available - most likely a 3.0-litre levels of safety equipment as the company’s sedans. All MBSA admits to, so far, is that the most each vehicle’s intended market, with Stylish Explorer powerful engine will be a V6 diesel. With this engine, being more luxurious and Powerful Adventurer styled load capacity will be 1.1 tons and maximum towing more ruggedly. Whichever way each one might swing, mass will be 3500 kg. the goal is for both to exude a “welcome home’ feeling for traditional M-B buyers. There will be two models, both double-cabs. The civilian version, intended for school runs, going out on International launch date is given as “late 2017.”

The program consists of three services; a city-based plan that rents GM cars by the hour through a mobile app, one for urban apartment dwellers, and peer-to-peer car sharing that it first introduced in Germany. In San Francisco, customers will only have access to Maven City that lets them rent one of 60 cars at more than 30 sites in the city; starting with the Financial

District, Embarcadero, South of Market Area, and the Mission District. Pricing will start at $8 per hour including insurance and fuel. Maven customers can rent Chevrolet models including Volt, Malibu, and Cruze, as well as luxury Cadillacs such as Escalade. It will compete with similar services in the city: Getaround, Turo, and City CarShare. Since July, Lyft’s Express Drive program lets Lyft drivers rent General Motors cars so that they can drive for the ride-hailing company. General Motors announced in January that it had invested $500 million in Lyft and that the two companies would work on self-driving car technology and other programs, like Express Drive, together. Including the Express Drive program, General Motors says that Maven customers have already driven 15 million miles (24-m km).

THE 2016 RENAULT CAPTUR SUNSET EDITION Rounding out the engine line-up for Renault’s Captur range of small Crossovers is the Alliance’s K9K, 1.5-litre, turbodiesel that joined the introductory pair of petrol motors this past July. Renault’s most-sold engine worldwide, it boasts significantly reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (up to 35 percent lower). The secret is in the innovative turbocharging architecture that simplifies air admission for higher output.

As a final flourish, soupçons of amber are drizzled artistically onto the steering wheel too.

The gear shift is smooth and positive, there is plenty of space for big left feet to reach the footrest, steering is light and easy, the dials are clear and the seven-inch touch screen with its half-dozen menus is straightforward. Thankfully, music volume and air controls remain separate and consist of simple buttons and knobs. The car feels solidly built and fit Like the 900 cc turbopetrol motor, it develops 66 and finish is good. This cramps knee space somewhat but it’s the price you pay for temporary convenience. Head- and foot room is plentiful for what is essentially a small car. Below the reversible floor board (carpet or rubberised sides) is a square box, 23 centimetres deep, that could be used for hidden storage or simply for expanding the main boot. The spare is a steel spacesaver. Although the petrol options offered by Captur are excellent pieces of machinery, we like this one best. Apart from the long term fuel savings one enjoys with a diesel, its easy-driving day-to-day performance makes it a winner too.

Emergency lane driving needs urgent policing – AA

Lack of inter-personal respect

The Automobile Association (AA) has called on traffic authorities to take firm action against the illegal, dangerous and selfish practice of using emergency traffic lanes (yellow lanes) as additional thoroughfares or for overtaking. Informal observational research conducted by AA staff found that many drivers use the yellow zone simply as an extra lane, especially in heavy traffic. “Certain areas are worse than others, but lots of drivers blatantly flout the law. In one part of Pretoria, for instance, we saw more than 200 vehicles using the yellow lane between 7:30 am and 9:00 am on a single weekday morning,” the researchers noted.

“Driving in the yellow lane to pass other cars is extremely selfish and the law must be better enforced than it is at present. Once drivers use the emergency zone it becomes just another lane until they have to ‘force’ their way back into normal traffic. This causes justifiable anger among drivers who follow the rules, and contributes to road rage incidents,” said the AA. Apart from calling for better enforcement, the AA wants drivers to change attitudes and to obey road laws. Too often, drivers justify their actions with various excuses even though they know they are acting illegally. “Everyone wants to get to meetings on time, catch flights, see their children’s sporting events or hurry home to loved ones, but that doesn’t entitle them to invent new rules as they go along. It’s every driver’s duty to obey the same regulations as everyone else, so avoiding a free-for-all on our roads; a situation that is fast developing. We are concerned that this will get out of hand if left unchecked,” the AA said.

Emergency lanes are there to provide easy access for rapid response units such as ambulances, rescue vehicles and police cars, and obstructing their routes could result in victims not being attended to on time. Regulation 298A of the National Road Traffic Act states that persons should only use emergency lanes in cases of real need. Using them for illegal overtaking is forbidden. The Association called on traffic police throughout the country to prioritise emergency lane misuse and The only exception applies to motorists travelling to deal with it firmly, in the interests of both driver on single carriageways, one lane in each direction, safety and efficient functioning of emergency when it is permissible to move into an emergency personnel. lane to allow faster moving traffic past. The Act clearly states, however, that this can only be done “Without any action taken against them, people will during daytime and drivers are required to ensure start believing that there are no consequences to they have at least 150m of visibility ahead before bad driving habits.
