The examination system was fully tested on Tuesday, 23 November 2017 when more than 630 000 candidates sat to write English Paper 1 at Home Language and First Additional Language levels. Students from surrounding Pietermaritzburg schools went all out to wish their fellow matriculants well and received a magnitude of support and encouragement from their families and friends. “Let's do this Class of 2017! Our teachers have prepared us well, I feel ready to write. After 12 years of schooling, we have finally come to our final lap,” said Kelly_Robyn. “Have your eyes on the prize, be wary of things meant to distract you and lead you astray. Look out for your best interests. #Matric2017,” wrote @Angela_Kondile. Local English teacher of Heather Secondary School, Michelle Chengan, also took to social media platforms to wish matriculants - “Best wishes to the students of Heather Secondary School and to every other matriculant writing their Final National Senior Certificate Examination. May your hard work and dedication bring you one step closer to your destiny, God Bless.” “For the NSC alone, the 2017 examination will be written by 83 968 full-time and 21 789 part-time candidates. Examinations have been taking place across more than 1 000 examination centres. After the first few papers their has been an array of thoughts and feelings amongst the class of 2017, here is what they have to say:
“This year has gone by a lot faster than expected and
no matter how much of preparations you do, you will always be nervous and scared. Our teachers have put in a lot of effort with us with regards to extra lessons after school and over weekends. They’ve aided us with past year Trial and Final Examination papers from all around South Africa to give us a better understanding of how questions will be posed and the amount of work that goes into answering these papers,” said Kiara Ranjith Heather Secondary School. “I have only completed 3 papers so far, English Paper 1, Accounting and Mathematics Paper 1 and others have completed 4 papers which includes Information Technology and from my experience, our Trial exams did prep us for papers like Accounting and Math Paper 1 which I wrote last week. However out of all 3, I still feel that English was the most challenging yet! At the end of it all, I know that
everyone, including myself is trying their best and my hope for us all is to be proud of one another because we know that we have worked to the best of our abilities,” she said.
“This Exam has been very challenging so far and I

“Although I thoroughly prepared for my final exams I still feel you could never be too prepared. When you are in that exam room you have to be level headed and compose yourself and your emotions. We only have ‘that’ time and we have to ensure that we do everything we can for the best results… However, our Trial examinations were a good prep for our finals and with 10 other papers left, I hope that I can maintain my confidence for the duration of my exams.” - Dillon Matthews - Maritzburg College. “I am confident that I will produce good results and my advice to everyone writing their final exams is to keep studying, work hard and do not procrastinate!” - Jeremy Werner - Eastwood Secondary School. HOME & GARDEN plants that bloom from spring through summer and winter. You don’t have to have a large garden to help them; a single flower pot or a window box will attract bees and butterflies and help restore a little bit of the habitat that has been lost to development. Showy flowers attract lots of bees, and that’s as it should be: they’re here to help.
Planting a Bee-friendly Garden
Creating a bee-friendly haven is easier than you think, just follow these tips!
• Let your plants flower Leave the flowers on your plants, this will allow the honeybees to access the pollen and nectar they need. • Have a fresh water source Any shallow water source will do; a bird bath, a waterfall, a pool or even
Page 5
newly watered potted plants are good for bees. • No pesticides or other chemicals Most chemicals are toxic to bees, so when in doubt, rather leave it out. • Weeds Flowering weeds are very important food sources for bees.
• Choose plants that attract bees Certain plants are more attractive to bees than others. These plants include basil, sage, thyme, lavender, watermelons, cucumbers and pumpkin.
Stop imagining bees as dangerous and aggressive, and think of them as watchable wildlife.
• Group similar plants together
Bees need our help: they’re critical pollinators — alongside butterflies and hummingbirds — but they’re misunderstood. Many people are afraid of bee stings and think bees are aggressive, but when bees visit a garden, they’re really not interested in people. They come for the buffet of bloom. Pollinators depend on combinations of
If you have space, try to plant at least one square metre of the same plant genus together. • Pick plants with long blooming cycles This will keep the bees coming back to your garden. SOURCE: SA GARDEN & HOME

A line in an old movie ran: “When the light strikes him in a certain way, he’s almost handsome.” Much the same could be said of Kia’s recently remodelled Picanto city car. Where the old one was sculptured and chunky, with an almost Hitler-like moustache for a grille, the new car is much smoother with remodelled lights, grille, lower air intake, side panels and rear end. Proteas Rout Bangladesh | Bok Fans Celebrate A Loss | Bafana Offer Hope | Epl In Full Swing OCTOBER kicked off the fourth and final Wallabies and All Blacks to look forward to quarter of the sporting calendar in fine style as the country’s favourite sports teams - the Proteas, Springboks and Bafana Bafana took centre stage, with the English Premier League also heating up nicely. I fully expect this particular quarter to be the best yet and dish out the choicest action of the year thus far. The Proteas busiest home summer in years will be sandwiched between the Boks defining European tour and Bafana’s do-or-die world cup qualifiers. The EPL and Champions League are in important phases as is Formula 1 as Lewis Hamilton closes in on his fourth championship. On your marks, get set, go!

obliterating everyone in their path, successfully defending their title already seems like a near impossible task. Spurs are doing as well as everyone expected (Harry Kane is in the form of his life) and Arsenal, while doing fairly okay, still seem to be going nowhere slowly under Arsene Wenger. Good luck to all EPL teams. You are seriously going to need it! NOVEMBER will see all other major football leagues in full swing. In France, Paris Saint Germain look odds on favourites for yet another title with the deadly attacking trident of Cavani, Mbappe and Neymar taking the football world by storm. In Germany, Bayern Munich seems to be back after firing their coach and in Spain, Barcelona are proving everyone wrong. The month will also see the Boks end-of-year European tour, the Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton looks a shoe-in for the title, tennis’ Davis Cup and ATP World Tour finals, the start of the much anticipated Ashes and more. IN CLOSING, buckle up and enjoy the ride – the sporting year is all set for a breath-taking conclusion. Thanks for reading! Be safe, keep cool and take care.
