Home Decor Trends 2018 – We Predict The Key Looks For Interiors We've seen the previews from all your favourites on the high street and beyond; and trust us when we say there is plenty to look forward to! Here’s our round-up of the top home decor trends to look out for to help you stay ahead of the curve in 2018.

This dining set look super stylish in contemporary walnut wood, the dark shade showing off the natural beauty of the grain.

Last year saw us filling our homes with totally tropical jungle prints, flamboyant flamingos and just about anything and everything metallic we could get out hands on! So what does the year ahead hold in the trend stakes? Here are our top predictions for home decor trends to keep up with in 2018…

Earthy shades of clay, terracotta and ochre feature on global-inspired prints, which will play a key role this season. The patterns, materials and textiles all have a natural, raw feel to them, making them extremely tactile.

1. Rich pigments Grey may still be the neutral of choice for many interiors, but colour is set to be bolder this year. We’re feeling braver with colour choices – on both walls and furniture pieces, as sofa colour choices of late have demonstrated. Moody interiors are more popular than ever, too, with brooding violet, navy and striking emerald green all key colours for 2018. The rich new shades that make up the spring/summer palette are all beautifully enhanced further on furniture pieces in luscious velvet! 2. Glam dark woods Furniture is set to head to the dark side this year. We’re stepping away from pale, bleached woods that were hugely popular thanks to the Scandi trend of recent years. 2018 is the year where darker wood tones signify a resurgence for retro glamour, and provide a new take on modern luxe. While this dark trend has been bubbling on the back burner for some time, this year it’s ready to take over completely. But are you ready, that’s the question? Metallic handles and legs are the perfect finishing touches to add an extra glam feel. And a fusion of walnut, gold, brass, black and marble gives a more sophisticated feel to many high-street pieces. Retro shapes, such as these wishbone-style dining chairs, are made timeless thanks to rich wood stains.

3. Global goodness Travel always influences interiors trends, with this spring being no exception. The new Fusion collection from John Lewis takes its influence from the beautiful colours and patterns seen in the cities and palaces of Rajasthan.

Patterns featured on soft furnishings and serve-ware are inspired by traditional block printing. Try mixing small scale Ikat prints with larger paisley-inspired designs. 4. Artisan textures Texture is a big thing this season! Furniture has a natural handmade feel with materials such a rattan and wicker the stars of the show. Textiles take a playful role with lots of embellishments, raw edges and appliqué details – all irresistible to the touch. So much can be achieved by simply playing with textures and materials. Whether it be woven wicker furniture, macramé cushions or mixing marble with metal (perfect for modern lamp choices) don’t underestimate the power of embracing and combining different textures. Whatever the colour palette, mixing textures can instantly create another layer of decoration and interest. We love the use of macramé, seen in almost every new collection on the high street from cushions to wall hangings. A simple pendant can transform a space, providing an instant touch of on-trend styling at very little expense. 5. Tropical prints A continuation from last year, the tropical trend is still going strong – with the retro Swiss cheese plant being a hero alongside palm leaves. The trend has evolved for 2018 – it’s less about vibrant carnival brights and more about mixing plenty of lush, energising greens.

Rich shades of green look striking against on-trend darker furniture choices and the charcoal and navy walls that are so fashionable for home decorating right now. Look out for the key elements to help to create this look in your home. Think large scale leaf prints, oversized insects, safari wildlife and exotic birds. Just to mix things up, and include those who can’t be seen with green presumably, House of Fraser has created an on-trend design in alternative bold colours. Thanks to the all-over palm print this set still feels totally tropical. 6. Metallic accents The addition of luxe metallic touches is not new, but the big difference this year is the choice of metallic finish – think less copper and rose gold, more brass! Brass is the most sophisticated and organic of the metallic colour palette. Brass furniture pieces, mirrors and accessories all help to add a luxurious finish to any room – soft pink and emerald green both accentuate brass and gold tones perfectly. Lamps and smaller accessories are the perfect way to inject a new trend into a room without having to invest in larger, expensive furniture pieces. Mix brass with marble for an on-trend feel for lighting in 2018 7. Pineapples reign supreme The humble pineapple is back on top as the trendy motif to adorn your home for this spring/summer. Last year the cactus print pipped the pineapple in the popularity stakes, but it would appear the tables have turned. Although the cactus is most certainly not going anywhere, it’s taking a back-seat to the pineapple once again… There are even pineapples for the bathroom in the spring summer collection at George Home – there’s literally a pineapple for every room this season. Botanical prints Flowers and botanical prints are always in fashion, it’s just a case of what makes them feel new. This season prints have gone small-scale – straight out of an artist’s sketchbook or forager’s handbook.

Ford Everest 2.2 XLS awd Words by Gordon Hall Pics by Quickpic

Historically, October 4th has been quite a day. Christiaan Huygens patented the pocket watch in 1675, Mexico became a republic in 1824, Portugal did the same in 1910, UCLA was founded in 1880, the Orient Express made its first official run from Paris to Istanbul in 1883, the USSR launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, followed that two years later with Luna 3 photographing the dark side of the moon and Schumi retired on that day in 2012. Closer to home, Ford SA started building Everest SUVs and Ranger pickups on October fourth, 2016. There are eight models available here. Five have the 2.2-litre TDCi motor with manual or automatic and in two trim levels, XLS and XLT. The rest are 3.2 automatics. The only way to get 4x4 with stick shift is to buy one like our test rig, a 2.2 XLS. It’s semi-stripped, competent and probably the most “honest” version of all. You forego a few nice touches like lane keeping aids and blind spot monitoring, leather upholstery, electric seat adjusters, dual zone automatic

climate control, adaptive cruise control, rain sensing wipers, auto-on headlamps, front parking sensors, active park assist, MyKey, auto-dipping interior mirror and a few minor trim items. You also downgrade from the über fancy Sync3 entertainment setup with navigation and touch screen to Sync1. You still have six airbags, ABS brakes with all the acronyms, fog lamps and disc brakes at each end, backup sensors, ordinary cruise control with limiter, a reversing camera and full-time awd with downhill crawl and terrain management. There’ll be more on that later. Tyres are off-road-practical 265/65 R17s. Running boards are optional, as is a tow hitch, although the socket wiring, trailer anti-sway and adaptive load control are built in. All-wheel drive – Ford calls it permanent 4WD – is achieved via a torque on demand transfer case that monitors individual wheel speeds every sixteen milliseconds, with clutches controlling torque split front to rear. Drive is biased rearward - approximately 90-95 percent during highway cruising. Low range and diff-lock can be selected separately.

couple of oddments stashes. The Sync1 music centre includes a CD player and, although a bit awkwardly shaped, the box under the central armrest holds ten discs in standard jewel cases.

Getting back to Terrain Management, a rotating knob on the console selects automatic response (the machine thinks for you), grass-gravel-snow, sand, and rock crawl modes. Choosing this last one prompts an instruction to select 4LO first. It also locks the transmission into first gear but it’s only necessary for extreme conditions. We negotiated our Tenderfoot Trail with its fairly steep hill that’s liberally decorated with loose stones, in auto mode and (normal) first gear, easily. In other words the Everest yawned disinterestedly, so if you want to take a pretty wagon out bushwhacking, this one’s ready. Because it’s based on the Ranger pickup the fully sized steel spare hangs below the floor with jack and tools in a recess under a flap in the load area. The sixth and seventh chairs, usually folded into the floor, lift and deploy easily although limited headroom and tight access mean they’re best reserved for little people. Full belts, head restraints and cup holders are provided. Knee space varies because the second row can be slid back and forth through about ten centimetres – possibly compromising comfort for those seated there. Useful touches include entry- and panic handles all ‘round; adjustable fan speed, air direction and temperature controls for those in the back; three dome lights so everybody can see and enough living space for grown people. There are seatback pockets, door bins, a big cubby, a dash-top recess and a

PROTEAS STREAMROLL INDIA | BOK COACH DELAY | EPL DISHES OUT DRAMA | 2018 SPORTING ATTRACTIONS THE Indian cricket team arrived on South African shores as the world’s number one ranked test outfit. Coach Ravi Shastri and skipper Virat Kohli hyped up their team’s chances and went as far as saying that they would indeed become the first sub-continental side to sneak a test series win against the Proteas. Fast-forward three weeks and it’s ‘Operation: Epic Fail’, as the men in green proved far too hot to handle and India’s reputation as strugglers away from the comforts of home, once again and seem to have great depth in all confirmed! departments going into the tough It was a huge wake-up call for a team who had just won nine series on the trot (albeit in familiar, dry conditions) and a welcome source of revenge for a Proteas outfit who were embarrassed in India in 2015 due to some seriously questionable pitches. What would have made it even sweeter was that the series was secured in Centurion on a wicket that resembled an Indian turner. I am sure Faf du Plessis had some choice words for the curator as he had requested some grass and greenery. So where did it all go wrong for the supposed world number one team? Firstly, the BCCI’s decision to cancel warm-up games well and truly came back to bite them as well as the poor scheduling leading up to the first test. Playing for almost three consecutive years on flat-bed wickets and then suddenly facing the likes of Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada on green tops is bound to get you caught cold. Also, why was there a need to schedule yet another series against Sri Lanka that only ended days before the team’s departure to Africa? Ideally they would have liked to have arrived three weeks or so prior to the first test at Newlands to acclimatize to local conditions. Very poor planning and this is ultimately what cost them dearly. Poor team selections as well as a captain with a hot-head, also added to their woes. With more tough away tours in 2018, better scheduling and planning are advised as well as a change in mind-set if they are to prevail in tough English and Australian conditions. Positives that the team could take away include the emergence of a genuine pace-attack (they seriously troubled our batsmen) and the performance of all-rounder Hardik Pandya who is definitely one for the future. As far as South Africa go, the team are very close to officially becoming the world’s number one ranked team again

Australian series which will be one for the ages. The unearthing of 21 year old Lungi Ngidi (aptly nicknamed ‘Lambo-Ngidi’) is simply one mere example of why this team has such a bright future to look forward to. Ottis Gibson has truly revitalized the squad and already taken them to greater heights. AB de Villiers is in the form of his life and Dale Steyn is still fighting hard to get back to his glory days. I predict a glorious 18 months ahead leading up to the 2019 World Cup.

almost certain to secure La Liga this year, the poor chap is almost guaranteed a winner’s medal in a mere four months’ time.

(just kidding). Can he finally spark the Red Devils? Time will tell. The biggest news though had to be Phillipe Coutinho’s transfer from Merseyside to Catalonia and the man can finally win some silverware! Five years with the Reds and zero titles is bound to hurt. With Barcelona looking

Print deadlines prevent me from commenting on the outcome of the third test at the Wanderers but if day one is anything to go by (in which India’s batting line-up collapsed yet again) then a white-wash could be on the cards. The circus then moves on to Durban for the first of six ODIs (I will be attending so look out for my report in my next column) and three T20s. Make no mistake - India will compete in both white-ball series and it will a tight affair of exciting matches.

IN CLOSING, it seems there is so much to look forward to. Get the sunscreen out and those vocal chords tuned up – it’s time to start cheering on your favourite sports teams!!! Enjoy, cheers.

THE SPRINGBOK brains trust is still toying with the emotions of all their die-hard supports having still not resolved the Allister Coetzee coaching debacle. Can we get rid of the guy already? This delay is bound to hurt the team as we welcome England (world number 2) in June. The new coach needs time to prepare and strategize, preferably before the start of Super Rugby. God help us if the announcement is made in April or May with no time execute pretty much anything. An even scarier thought though is if Coetzee is somehow retained. It will then be safe to start planning a Springbok funeral ad cremation thereafter.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE fans would have endured a rollercoaster of emotions as all clubs were caught up in the rigmarole of the transfer window this past month. Alexis Sanchez’ move from Arsenal to the red side of Manchester was met with shock and awe. Sanchez will now be the highest paid player at the club and can now take up his new role of left-back in the 10-0-0 bus formation

2018 will dish up a variety of sporting goodness. There is also the UEFA Champions League knockout stages coming up in February, of course the FIFA World Cup (the highlight of the year), not to mention all the local cup competitions such as the FA Cup and Cop del Rey. The Formula 1 calendar looks jam-packed (can Lewis Hamilton do it again?) as does the ATP tennis schedule. Super Rugby begins in earnest next month (go Sharks) and the first golfing major gets underway in April (Masters).
