SPRAY, SHAVE OR BAIL? They say a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life, and with CANSA Shavathon theres more than enough of an opportunity to have the whole family apart of changing their lives and somebody else's too!

Hosting a Shavathon event at workplaces, or places of study, community halls or your home provides the chance to have a little fun, while bringing important awareness to a serious illness. For a R50 donation (R25 for kids under 12), people can shave or spray hair / hair can also be donated if the ponytail measures 25 cm or longer. Our health programmes comprise health and education campaigns; CANSA Care Centres that offer a wide range of care and support services to those affected by cancer; stoma and other clinical support and organisational management; medical equipment hire, as well as a toll-free line to offer information and support. We also supply patient care and support in the form of 12 CANSA Care Homes in the main metropolitan areas for out-of-town cancer patients; a hospitium based in Polokwane; and CANSA-TLC lodging for parents and guardians of children undergoing cancer treatment.” In 2016 volunteers of the existing 30 CANSA Care Centres offer support to about 50 318 cancer patients and their families in over 322 communities. CANSA’s health campaigns, which are underpinned by research, promote early detection of cancer & aim to reduce cancer risk. CANSA has alternate donation initiatives that you can find on their website. All donations and proceeds go to a variety of treatment, support, awareness and research programmes that they currently provide. You will be directed to GivenGain’s secure online fundraising platform when making your donation.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has yet again joined forces, at selected Shavathon venues allowing the public to make a blood donation, along with Shavathon participation. “Blood donations are often used for cancer patients undergoing treatment or blood transfusions, and that’s why we’re putting a call to action to the participants at the Shavathon events. Cancer survivors find great comfort in this campaign. The CANSA Shavathon is a selfless donation to helping survivors find their comfort in knowing that they are not alone in this. Shaun Terblanche, CANSA Global Hero of Hope (33) a brain cancer survivor, has perhaps

the best response to what Shavathon means to him - “Away with hair, away with cancer.” The support CANSA receives from the community, businesses and official partners is phenomenal. Scholtz adds, “From CANSA’s side, we are so grateful to all shopping centers and malls that are providing us free space and help with refreshments, so a big shout out and thank you.” Imagine, imagine a world without cancer.

Parts of Umgeni Water’s operational area are still in a state of drought, a consequence of the El Nino effect. The affected areas are eThekwini, parts of iLembe District, Ixopo and uMgungundlovu District. Much of eThekwini and uMgungundlovu, including Pietermaritzburg, receive their water from the Mgeni system. The Mgeni system (Midmar Dam, Spring Grove Dam, Mearns Dams, Albert Falls Dam, Nagle Dam and Inanda Dam) has experienced below average rainfall over the past 30 months, resulting in some of these dams remaining consistently at below 30% and 50%. It is as a result of inadequate rainfall and concerns over the levels of Midmar and Albert Falls dams that mandatory water restrictions of 15% have been implemented.

In the Hazelmere system, water restrictions of 40% were lifted on 1st September 2016 following a combined total of 180 mm rainfall that was received in July and August 2016. The Hazelmere system serves areas in the far north of eThekwini and parts of iLembe. The use of an emergency scheme to transfer water from uThongathi River into Hazelmere Dam has been discontinued.

In the Ixopo system, mandatory water restrictions of 50% are also in place as a result of Ixopo Dam remaining consistently low. Ixopo Dam is being supported by the transfer of water into it through an emergency scheme.

Water restrictions and use of emergency schemes have been effective in slowing down the drop in the levels of some dams within Umgeni Water’s operational area. Consumers within the affected areas have begun to appreciate the need for water conservation and for the implementation of water rationing and restrictions as a means to manage the effects of the drought.

The most electrifying event is the Luminaria ceremony. It is a silent lap of reflection in which candles are lit inside a paper bag and are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to remember and honor loved ones who have passed or are still fighting the disease. The next two events involve a pledge to help create a world without cancer and learn more about awareness. It is also a time to socially engage with other supporters at the event throughout the night. Thereafter a closing ceremony commences.

The Opening Ceremony welcomes relayers followed by a Survivor and Caregiver Lap. This lap celebrates the survivors as they lead the first lap followed by the caregivers who follow to recognise their help and assistance to cancer patients. Thereafter an “Opening

2017 HYUNDAI TUCSON

1.7 ULL DIESEL EXECUTIVE M/T 4X2 Your typical bloke around the braai fire might look at this third-generation Hyundai Tucson 1.7 Diesel and say, “… just an iX35 that went back to its old name and still uses the same engines.”

Hyundai declared its intention, some years ago, of becoming a bench-mark player in build quality. It’s pretty much there. Everything fits together beautifully, it’s quiet, it feels solid, it handles well, the controls work smoothly, the gearshift is smooth and positive and doors and hatch lid close with a gentlemanly “thwup.” Some manufacturers might want to rethink their national arrogance.

versus the old car’s figures of 6.5 and 139 grams. There are also slight differences in performance numbers: 13.7 seconds zero to 100 and top speed of 176 against the 2015 iX35’s 12.4 seconds and 173 km/h. Apart from added mass, there appear to have been some subtle gearing changes too.

Performance could best be described as "nice" rather than sporty or vigorous. PROTEAS UNSTOPPABLE LAUREUS AWARDS A FARCE JOOST A TRUE LEGEND FEBRUARY is all but over! Is it just me or are the days flying faster than ever before, even faster than Usain Bolt in his prime? The one constant that we can all rely on though, is yes, you guessed it . . . sport. The sporting year is well and truly into second gear with the likes of cricket and football taking centre stage and rugby about to make its long awaited return as well. The month also saw the Laureus Awards (the Academy Awards of the sporting world) take place which dished out a few farcical prizes, just as the Oscars and Grammys always do. CRICKET is undoubtedly an all year sport and our very own national team are on yet another mission down under. The Proteas are enjoying a rare purple patch and seem unbeatable. Following on from their successful home summer, the team has embarked on a tough tour to the ‘land of the long white cloud’, New Zealand. At the time of writing, the boys had already destroyed their opposition in the one-off T20 international and also edged their rivals in the first ODI. The men in green seem to be building up some serious momentum with a look to the upcoming

Stormers should show just why rugby is so important to citizens of this country and go far as well. Good luck to all six of our teams.

FOOTBALL will forever and always be the most popular sport on earth and with good reason. A tournament such as the UEFA Champions League, which also made its much anticipated return this month, shows just why this is. Other than the world cup, this is probably the best football event in the world. The best of the best going head-to-head for the most coveted of prizes. The current tourney looks to be particularly Champions Trophy in June and are already looking interesting after the first round of knockout matches. Tournament favourites FC Barcelona like the best test team in the world (which will be were unceremoniously hammered by Paris Saint proven beyond any doubt after the Indian tour of our country in November). Last season’s fairy-tale team Leicester City, has well Australia is in for the toughest tour of them all as and truly imploded and will probably be relegated they take aim at world number one India in their own backyard. I suspect that they could seriously come May (perhaps their ‘magic muthi’ has run be scarred after this sojourn and end up losing 4-0 out?). Whichever team you support, enjoy the adrenalin rush that modern day football inevitably all over again as the Indians will look to doctor brings, be it highs or lows or even Paul Pogba’s pitches to suit their spinners. terrible fashion sense (laughs). RUGBY fans are excited to usher in the new THE LAUREUS AWARDS took place this past season which kicks off with some high-energy month as well with a few dubious decisions taking Super rugby. The toughest provincial rugby centre stage. It annoys me greatly that American tournament on the planet is bound to leave sports teams are always nominated for ‘world supporters breathless. Expect the New Zealand team of the year’. Yes we all respect and enjoy the teams to be calling all the shots yet again. Super Bowl (well done to the New England However, our very own Lions, Bulls, Sharks and

Patriots) but it does not make sense to acknowledge teams who compete among themselves and not against the rest of the ‘world’. Baseball’s Chicago Cubs won ‘world’ team of the year whereas other teams who actually had ‘global achievements’ were not even nominated. What about our very own Wayde van Niekerk who should have won his category (‘breakthrough of the year’) as well? Very disappointing! JOOST VAN DER WESTHUIZEN rest in peace sir! The former Blue Bulls and Bok scrumhalf (and captain) will never be forgotten. The man who fought a long battle with motor-neuron disease had some of the most impeccable international statistics under his belt: 89 tests, 38 tries (second most ever for the Springboks), 190 points, a World Cup winners medal and more. Former All Black legend and fellow scrumhalf Justin Marshall recently stated: “When people ask me about Joost I tend to gravitate towards the fact that, on his day when he was at his peak, he was probably one of the best, if not the best, player on the planet”, and who could ever dispute that! MARCH SPORTING ATTRACTIONS include the above-mentioned cricket, rugby and football action in full swing with a particular focus on our boys in green down under (can we whitewash the kiwis in the test series?) as well as a feast of Super rugby and more Six Nations action (can England be stopped?). The Formula 1 season also begins. IN CLOSING I would like to give some much needed advice to Tiger Woods, on behalf of the sporting world: “Give it up dude!”. Also, well done to Roger Federer on his epic Australian Open triumph!!! Have a super sporting month in March and until next time . . . cheers!
