STATISTICS IN OUR SCHOOLS

In the past two years there has been an alarming increase of violence & abuse in schools throughout our country have occurred between pupils, pupils, pupils & facilitators, & pupils and parents. In KwaZulunatal, local schools have made their appearance in headlines in more than 60 newspaper articles and 151 Youtube or Facebook videos.

Research shows that school violence is escalating despite the measures put in place to address the problem by the Department of Education (DOE) and schools themselves. Both teachers and students appear justified in fearing for their own safety with the consequence that the learning process is stymied by the need to deal with unruly behaviours and to prevent serious episodes of aggression and violence. Similarly, the Human Rights Commission (2006:1) found: "The environment and climate necessary for effective teaching and learning is increasingly undermined by a culture of school-based violence and this is becoming a matter of national concern". This implies that educators spend most of their time focusing on solving problems associated with school violence instead of focusing on effective teaching and learning. The magnitude and effects of violence on teaching and learning is a national concern; this is even more worrying because school violence is escalating despite the measures that have been put in place by the DOE. Focussing on our Province and Country as a whole, both the safety of our teachers and students are compromised everyday. Galaxy News would like to reflect on a few of the recent situations that have taken place in the last few months. On Saturday, 18 March 2017, Deputy principal, Priscilla Thembilihle, was gunned down by two men while she was teaching a matric class at Laduma High School in Pietermaritzburg. The motive behind her murder is still under investigation and the learners will undergo a series of counselling sessions to help deal with this ordeal. Spokesperson for KZN Education, Muzi Mahlambi said their officikals would be at the school on Monday, 20 March. “We are very

disturbed by the sad news that one of our acting Principals, the Deputy Principal, in the uMgungundlovu District was gunned down in front of the learners in the classroom,” he said.

Video clips made its rounds over the past 3 weeks of a pupil at Carter High School who had found herself in a heated confrontation with two parents. It was concluded that the parents were there to cnfront the pupil as she had allegedly attacked their child earlier that day. A mother has confessed that her daughter had been a victim to bullying by the attacked and the two ladies were on their way to report it at the schools offices when this incident occured. Learners officer at Carter High School, Johan de Georde, informed the media that both the school, including parents, have laid criminal charges against the two female individuals and who decided to envoke a violent confrontation on their premises as well as for trespassing. A learner of a school in Mpumalanga has passed away earlier this week after being assaulted by a School Principal. 14 year Old, Siphomandla Choma death is currently under investigation to confirm whether he had passed away from the brutal attack which occurred on 12 June 2016 that led to him being paralysed or if there was any other cause of death. The principal has been charged with misconduct and the first disciplinary session hearing had taken place on 17 March 2017. With these incidents being highlighted, lets include former School Guidance Counsellor Darren Goddard who has been accused on 10 accounts of rape and sexual assault. Goddard had sexually abused young boys at the Scottsville Primary School. The counsellor was indicted to stand trial in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg on a total of 10 counts of rape and sexual assault between 31 July and 25 August 2017. The prosecution intends to charge at least one other person in the involvement of these incidents. As a parent, you intend to give your child the best quality education, you intend to keep their best interest and safety at heart but when your child enters their school premises this is completely out of your control and their safety is now in the hands of the school. Schools should be a safe haven to children are becoming a place of violence, instability and danger. It is fair to say that the schools do not plan for these incidents and that they are inevitable but there should be some way to

combat them as a community. School violence is regarded as any intentional physical or non-physical (verbal) condition or act resulting in physical or non-physical pain being inflicted on the recipient of that act while the recipient is under the school's supervision. Statistics show that 65% of respondents at high schools describe bullying as one of the biggest problems at school compared to 48% a year ago. 40% of the 65% of pupils between 13 – 14 years old identified bullying as major problem, compared to the 15% of

pupils between 15 -17 years old.It also shows that 13% of schools in South Africa still practice Copral Punishment. Corporal Punishment has been prohibited in schools since the South African Schools Act implemented in 1996.

The question is, with all these laws and studies that have been implemented, why are children still exposed to so much of violence in our schools? Send us your views on social@blackincmedia.co.za

Beauty Trends SEASONAL TREND UPDATE SKIN - MULTI-MASKING

Fishnet tights

Using a facial mask weekly is an essential part of skincare. There are several masks available for targeting different concerns. Certain parts of our skin require specific attention and using multiple masks simultaneously combat these issues.

A rather risqué accessory has been dominating street style this season. Fishnet tights have often been associated with micro-minis (think the 80’s) but they are now being layered under denim, specifically ripped jeans. Distressed and ripped jeans have come back season after season, and the trendiest way to style them this season is with fishnet stockings peeking out through them. A more understated way of wearing the trend, is by rolling up the hems of your jeans/pants or to wear cropped pants, so only a small portion of the tights is exposed.

Popular masks on the market - Clay and charcoal based masks help to combat oily and acne prone skin, by mattifying the skin.

Pyjama inspired daywear

- Sheet masks are made up of a thin fabric which is soaked in a serum. These masks are great for hydrating and brightening. The shape of the mask fits the contours of the face and can be cut to accommodate for multi-masking. - Under-eye patches which help with dark circles and puffiness.

HAIR - SWITCH UP YOUR HAIR BAND FOR A RIBBON There’s an updated way of wearing a black ribbon in your hair that says more chic than school girl. If you’re going for a laid back look tie a ribbon around a low ponytail or bun.

Sleepwear inspired ensembles are making their way into daytime attire (NO that does not mean that you’re allowed to wear your onesie out to lunch!). Incorporating lounge wear into your closet is a major trend this season. The key pieces to look for are slinky slip dresses, shirts with piping and front pockets, lightweight outerwear resembling robes in silky material, and palazzo style pants with matching shirts in plain or printed fabric. Choosing the right fabric is essential, steer clear of cotton and look for more luxurious fabrics. To avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed you have to accessorise your ensemble aptly, wear it with a pair of high heels, bold jewellery and accessories.

Ballet style takes to the streets For a more glamorous approach curl your hair and tie the ribbon around a Ballerinas epitomize grace and class and ballet pieces have high ponytail in a bow, or leave it loose been incorporated into street style. The ballet fashion staples and use the ribbon like a headband. are tops with tie-up ribbon detail at the back, billowy tulle skirts layered over jeans and leggings, and ballet inspired footwear.

MAKEUP - LIPGLOSS & FAKE FRECKLES

Transparent footwear

It is time to give your matte lips a break and pucker up with lip-gloss. Glossy lips are making a comeback and perfect when paired with minimal makeup.

Translucent footwear be it strappy sandals or thigh high boots, has gained popularity. With Kanye West’s Yeezy brand championing the trend many a celebrity has been spotted donning them. Footwear brands have since been making affordable options making Cinderella’s glass slipper accessible to the everyday girl.

TIP- Purchase a clear lip-gloss and layer it over your matte and cream lipsticks, this gives you additional colour options without having to buy more products.

Korean beauty products have become incessantly popular over the years and one of their best beauty inventions to date are BB and CC creams. BB (beauty balm) and CC (colour corrector) creams appeal to many as they are multipurpose products. To someone new to beauty both products appear similar but they are for different concerns.

Freckles are sometimes viewed as unattractive by those who have them and they purchase products to conceal the tiny spots on their face. Over the last few years beauty norms have been defied and women have started to accept their unique features. The once taboo skin condition is now coveted, so much so that women who don’t have freckles have started drawing them on their face after applying foundation. The fake freckles can be drawn on with an eye shadow (in taupe or light brown) by using a tiny brush, or you can use an eyeliner or brow pencil in the same tones.

FOOD

EASTER EATING, AROUND THE WORLD

As in most other countries where Easter is celebrated, it falls in late March to mid-April, it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it involves Easter bunnies and chocolate eggs. In South Africa, there are also frequent Easter parades, egg hunts, egg-decorating workshops, and grand Easter feasts with native dishes. Local organisations will hold Easter events for kids, and families will spend much of the day out and about, while relaxing at home the rest of the time.

The tradition of eating hot cross buns at Easter is said to have derived from ancient Anglo-Saxons in England. They are traditionally eaten on Good Friday. South Africa does have a good deal of special Easter time dishes, including hot cross buns and pickled fish. Both of these dishes are especially common in the area

around Capetown. Hot cross buns derive from a British Easter tradition brought over by early Cape Province settlers. The pickled fish, however, are a Muslim Malay tradition. The Dutch, who originally settled in Capetown, brought Malay and Indian slaves who introduced the dish, which is very spicy and has a sweet and sour flavouring. How did a Muslim food become popular on Easter? The factors that led to this are simple, the abundance of fish of Capetown, the ability of a single batch of pickled fish to stay good throughout Easter Weekend, and the tradition of eating fish but not red meat at this time of year.

Ingredients: 100g glacé cherries 225g butter, softened 225g light sugar 4 large eggs 225g self-raising flour 225g sultanas 100g currants 50g/ chopped candied peel 2 lemons, grated zest 2 tsp ground mixed spice For the filling and topping: 450g marzipan 1-2 tbsp apricot jam, warmed Method: Preheat the oven to 150C. Grease and line a 20cm cake tin. Cut the cherries into quarters, put in a sieve and rinse under running water. Drain well then dry thoroughly on kitchen paper. Place the cherries in a bowl with the butter, sugar, eggs, self-raising flour, sultanas, currants, candied peel, lemon zest and mixed spice and beat well until thoroughly mixed.

The spirit of the pickled fish tradition is as alive as the aromatic smell of masala

On Good Friday many South Africans indulge in pickled fish oblivious as to where the tradition originates from. Some say they simply follow the accepted custom because it was passed down by their parents. Others prepare this delicacy because they consider eating meat on Good Friday as “unholy”. Whatever the reason, the spirit of the pickled fish tradition is as alive as the aromatic smell of masala, spices and fried fish that fill numerous homes. Ingredients:

400g - 500g hake, kabeljou or any other firm white fish available 2 tsp (10ml) Seasoned Sea Salt 2 tbsp (30ml) flour Canola oil 2 onions, finely sliced into rings ½ cup (125ml) water Simnel Cake is also a favourite during the ½ cup (125ml) cider or white wine vinegar Easter period. It is said to have originated 1 tsp (5ml) turmeric from Medieval times. 1 tsp (5ml) Seasoned Sea Salt 1 x 200ml Yogurt 1 tbsp curry mix Check out these easter favourites Fresh coriander by Rosemary Antolik

Deliciously sweet simnel cake This recipe take less than 30 minutes to prepare and 2 hours to cook.

Pickled fish is an Easter tradition

Pour half the mixture into the prepared tin.Take one-third of the marzipan and roll it out to a circle the size of the tin and then place on top of the cake mixture. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface. Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 2½ hours, or until well risen, evenly brown and firm to the touch. Cover with aluminium foil after one hour if the top is browning too quickly. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling on a wire rack. When the cake is cool, brush the top with a little warmed apricot jam and roll out half the remaining marzipan to fit the top. Press firmly on the top and crimp the edges to decorate. Mark a criss-cross pattern on the marzipan with a sharp knife. Form the remaining marzipan into 11 balls. Brush the marzipan with beaten egg and arrange the marzipan balls around the edge of the cake. Brush the tops of the balls with beaten egg and then carefully place the cake under a hot grill until the top is lightly toasted. A great traditional cake for your Easter tea, this is light, spicy and deliciously sweet.

Method:

Cut the fish into bite sized pieces and season with salt. Heat oil in a frying pan, coat the fish in flour and fry for about ten minutes or until cooked. Set aside. Combine the onions, vinegar, water, turmeric and salt in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Place cooled fish in a deep casserole or large jar and pour the sauce over. Refrigerate for 24 hours. Serve with curried yoghurt and fresh coriander. Or, for those with a sweet tooth, try the pickled fish atop some delicious hot cross buns.

spicy traditional HOT CROSS BUNS Ingredients:

2 x 7 g sachet dried yeast 455 g strong bread flour , plus extra for dusting 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ whole nutmeg 55 g caster sugar 2 pieces stem ginger 1 large free range egg 2 tablespoons plain flour 55 g sultanas or raisins 30 g dried cranberries 2 tablespoons mixed peel runny honey , to glaze 200 ml semi-skimmed milk 55 g unsalted butter

Method: Add the milk and 50ml water to a small pan and place over a low heat for a few minutes, or until slightly warm – you should be able to dip your finger in without scalding it. Meanwhile, add the butter to a separate pan and place over a low heat for a few minutes, or until melted, then set aside. Transfer the warmed milk mixture to a medium bowl and stir in the yeast. Set aside. Sift the flour into a large bowl, then add the salt, spices, a few good scrapings of nutmeg and the sugar. Finely chop the stem ginger and stir it into the mix. Make a well in the centre and pour in the melted butter, followed by the yeast mixture. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and add it to the bowl. Using a fork, mix well until you have a

rough dough, then transfer to a clean flour dusted work surface and knead for around 10 minutes, or until soft and springy. Return the dough to a flour dusted bowl, cover with a damp tea towel and leave to rise in a warm place for at least an hour, or until doubled in size. Transfer the dough to a clean flour dusted work surface. Knock the air out by bashing it with your fist, then sprinkle over the dried fruit and mixed peel and knead into the dough for 1 to 2 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Grease and line a large baking tray. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each into balls. Evenly space them out on a lined baking tray as you go. Cover with a paper towel and leave in a warm place for a further 30 minutes, or until doubled in size. Meanwhile, place the plain flour and 2 tablespoons water into a small bowl and mix to a thick paste. Gently pat down the risen buns then use the batter to carefully trace a cross over the top with a piping bag or spoon. Place the buns into the preheated oven for 15 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire cooling rack, brush over a little honey and leave to cool. Slice open the sticky hot cross buns, spread with a little butter and serve. TIP: If you want to keep the buns lovely and moist for longer, soak the dried fruit in fruit juice for a couple of hours beforehand.

THE X FACTOR: Opel’s Mokka has, since it was introduced here two years ago, been a nice little earner that averages just over 100 units per month thanks to its willing 1400 cc turbo engine, plentiful luggage space and generous passenger room. A further neat touch is acres of head space allowing tall drivers to raise their chairs to take full advantage of that high-up SUV outlook. Coinciding with a mild facelift and equipment upgrade this past November, Opel decided to join MINI and KWID in making its little city SUV more noticeable by adding some “shout” to its name. Mokka is thus now MOKKA and it adopts an -X suffix by which Opel will identify future SUV and Crossover models. Up front, new headlamp clusters combine daytime running lights and LED technology. Opel also revised interiors with new black cloth trim for each level, a new infotainment system with R4.0 Intellilink and improved driver display for Cosmo (optional on Enjoy), and a new dash with revised instruments and vents. Options for Cosmo variants include

Navi900 Intellilink and a premium lighting package consisting of LED rear lights and adaptive forward lighting with auto-levelling and integrated cornering function.

Conclusion: MOKKA, with or without all-caps, is compact (4.3 metres long), nimble, spacious, well built, economical and good value at today’s prices. It deserves to sell more. Proteas Odi Form Continues | Exciting Super Rugby | Barcelona In Greatest Comeback MARCH signals the first quarter of the calendar year in sport nearing an end. While we have all witnessed a fantastic start to the sporting year, it is now time to revel in all that is to come. Highlights include the Proteas tour to England, Super rugby in all its glory as well as the UEFA Champions League in full flow. Sports fans are in for a real treat in the second quarter of the year and beyond. CRICKET has dished out two very contrasting series. On the one hand our very own Proteas national team are doing battle with a plucky New Zealand outfit in their own backyard while Australia and India are in the midst of an intriguing series on the sub-continent. Our series with the Kiwis, while fought as hard as expected, is nowhere near the intensity and hostility portrayed between the arrogant Ozzies and Indians. After having successfully negotiated the one-off T20 and five match ODI series (3-2), the team were solid enough in the first of three tests, with only rain putting paid to any chance of a victory on the final day in Dunedin. The likes of Dean Elgar and Keshav Maharaj shone for the team with outstanding performances. The boys seem to be building up a head of steam and will be well primed J Jooma Properties o o m a P r o p e r t i e s J o o m a P r o p

How Allister Coetzee has kept his job is beyond me. Die-hard Bok fans feel as if On the flip side, Australia absolutely they are in the twilight zone as we have dismantled the Indians in their own backyard in the first of four tests only to now dropped to a record low of seventh in the world rankings. MOST EPIC COMEBACK in footballing history when they overturned a 4-0 goal first leg deficit against a helpless PSG outfit in the round of the last 16. This even eclipsed Istanbul 2005. It was a joy to witness and will probably never happen again. As always, it seems that Spanish and German teams will be dominating the competition. However, there is a certain English team who seem to be in the middle of yet another fairy-tale. While big boys such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham will be contesting the latter stages of the FA Cup, Leicester City will be doing the same, on a far bigger stage . . . the Champions League – the only Premier League team remaining. Who would have guessed it? Amazing!

ON A QUICK SIDE NOTE the less said about our failure to land the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Durban the better! Will the glory hunter Fikile Mbalula take responsibility as the head of sport? #Incompetent IN CLOSING I leave you with the words of legendary American Football guru Vince Lombardi: “What is defeat? Nothing but education. Nothing but the first step . . . to getting better”. Such an inspiring quotation can be used not just in sport but in everyday life too! Thanks for reading. Go well!
