HOSPITAL HINDERS HEALTH The nurse took my baby back to the nursery and looked around but said there was no suction equipment. My husband arrived at that point, and I explained what had happened, and at that point another nurse came in screaming” where is the baby”, explained Munro. The nurse explained to the couple that their daughter was going to be fine as she plugged in the suction equipment and suctioned the baby. When the doctor arrived, the nurse who helped the baby had to keep reprimanding the other nurses for bringing her the wrong equipment. Eventually she had to fetch the equipment herself.

A local couple are at their wits end after receiving, what can only be described as appalling service from the newly built Life Hilton Hospital. Nikita Munro and Robert Konigkramer were expecting a baby and had chosen to have her at Life Hilton Hospital. Konigkramer said his wife was takn to the hospital at 36 weeks pregnant as she was feeling dizzy and kept fainting.

Munro also said she was not given pain medication on time and often had to ring the bell to ask for her medication. She described the nurses as inefficient and unprofessional. In another instance Munro and her mum, who was visiting her at the time, noticed the baby stopped breathing as she (Munro) lay her down to change her nappy. She also noticed a thick yellowish fluid on the baby’s mouth. She then grabbed her baby and ran to the nurses begging for help but was horrified when the nurses just looked at her. She said none of the nurses knew what to do. “I placed my baby in the arms of a nurse and begged her to please do something.

Munro said the doctor on duty was clueless and could not offer any suggestions other than admission. “He had no idea what was wrong with me nor did he have any idea how to help me. He just shrugged his shoulders and when asked if our baby was ok, he just gave us a blank stare,” explained Munro. Now desperate for answers, Konigkramer telephoned the couples’ gynaecologist but was referred to another doctor via answering machine. That doctor told the couple they should get a nurse to monitor the baby’s heartbeat to determine whether the baby was distressed or not. The doctor on duty still did nothing. Eventually Konigkramer went to the maternity ward and got a nurse and baby heart monitor himself. Once they were satisfied the baby was ok, the couple left the hospital.

A catastrophic stay ensued once Munro was admitted for her C-section on the morning of 20 April 2016. On arrival the couple waited 20 minutes for no reason, despite having filled in all the relevant documents prior to the admission. A nurse passing by told them they should go straight to maternity as quickly as possible. The expectant mother was now stressed as she realised they were running late. During the surgery, Konigkramer observed the operating doctor reprimanding the nurses for doing the wrong things and not having the correct equipment on hand. They had to keep leaving the theatre to fetch various instruments.

Subsequently the couple had tried on numerous occasions to get an appointment with the Hospital Manager. They had gone to the hospital for a few meetings but still no one was of any assistance. On one occasion they went to the hospital to meet with the manager but upon The couple went on to explain that their stay in arrival, with their new-born in tow, were told only the NICU was terrible. They said many nurses the nursing manager was available and not the from Nursetech (a nurse recruitment agency) Hospital Manager. They were infuriated and left would come on duty and say they had never the hospital, disappointed yet again. They had worked in Life Hilton Hospital NICU. Umraw 082 9773 708 Pentrich station in Pietermaritzburg, a colonial symbol of a bygone, was resurrected for Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi on the wintery morning of 9th July, 2016. With a visible security presence, Modi embarked onto a wood-panelled carriage that carried him from Pentrich to Pietermaritzburg. This historical trail to the Pietermaritzburg train station was in reverence to where the poignant story of Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi begins. This was the catalyst that instigated a process of transformation with regards to racial divisions in South African and its impact on the Indian community. Scores of enthusiastic people, mainly of Indian descent and holding Indian flags, flocked eagerly outside Pietermaritzburg station to welcome Modi, anticipating to get a glimpse and to take a photograph of him. Modi was born on 17th September, 1950, in a small town in Gujarat (Vadnagar). This makes him the first Prime Minister to be born after India’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947. Modi is renowned for his humble beginnings and great courage, determination and perseverance, and also in becoming the Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy. He is the embodiment of optimism and compassion, a beacon of light to lead the Indian sub-continent.

reality for non-white people in South Africa, Gandhi realised that this was a crucial turning point in what would be a courageous quest for racial equality in South Africa. Professor Tridip Suhrud is the director and chief editor of the Gandhi Sabarmathi Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust in Ahmedabad, India, and states in his essay To Lift the Golden Orb: “The night that he spent on the railway station - in the first class waiting room Gandhi thought not of politics, not of the empire, not of dehumanizing system of discrimination or his legal rights. He considered what in Gujarati as also in Sanskrit would be called Sva-Dharma; a conception of the duties of self. Gandhi sought to ask himself about the nature of his duty, not duty towards anyone, or anything, not people, not nation, not his employer but towards himself”.

This quotation conclusively illuminates the profound nature of Gandhi’s thinking and the heightened awareness of his spiritual purpose in this fleeting life. A man of unfathomable character, he lived simply with an evolved way thinking. His existence surged with a Godly consciousness. It’s fair to say that Gandhi was a remarkable man, firstly to be able to think in this philosophical manner, and the inner strength and religious observance to act on it. To kick off Woman’s month, Galaxy News has interviewed a few exceptional young women who have excelled in their field of study. We asked them the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Tell us about you (family, friends, interests etc) When did you begin your studies and what accolades have you received? What are you currently studying and why did you choose this field? Tell us about your future plans. Any quote or motivational tip you would like to share.

This is what they had to say…..

jenna freer I'm 22 and lived in KZN all my life. My major interest outside of my studies is art for which I received the award for the top art student back in high school. It's nice to be able to balance creativity along with the more logical science of my studies.

Sanam Maikoo

I was raised in the small community of Northdale in a single-parent home. My early days, which I vaguely remember, were interesting, carefree and mostly happy. My primary school years were spent at Suncrest Primary and thereafter I attended Heather Secondary where I completed my Secondary education. School meant a lot to me and owing to it, I became acquainted with remarkable people, devoted friends and excellent teachers. Nowadays, if I am not concocting up something in the laboratories at UKZN, you are most likely to find me glued to a computer screen indulging in some creative writing for a blog, planning potential events to cater for the social needs of my postgraduate community or simply spending time with family and friends. I am currently studying towards a Doctor

If I were to be perfectly honest, my decision to enter into the world of science was purely an act of rebellion. Before completing my matric, I was faced with the difficult task of choosing a career path. I had no particular career in mind at the time, but I knew that I was thoroughly enjoying science at school. Oblivious to the domain of tertiary education, I naturally sought advice from many friends and family around the matter of studying science. I began to receive nothing but negative commentary such as “it is much too difficult”, “there are no jobs available” or “it is a man’s world”. I then found myself eager to research more on careers in science and discovered that it was a scarce skill in South Africa. This fuelled me with an innate need to investigate these ignorant opinions, prove that I could succeed in science and above all, contribute towards this scarce skill. During the first year of my Bachelor of Science degree, I became specifically fond of chemistry and this is how I ended up studying it.

myself inclined to study towards a Bachelor of Science Honours degree which I subsequently completed in 2012. In 2013, I was awarded the Scarce Skill Master’s Scholarship by the National Research Foundation which enabled me to complete as master’s degree in 2014. In 2015, I was extremely privileged to be granted a joint scholarship from the German Academic Exchange service and the National Research Foundation to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy, which I am currently undertaking. During my time at university, I have published a few articles in internationally peer-reviewed scientific journals and I have also been actively involved in various societies. I am currently the vice president of The Postgraduate Society of Chemistry and Physics which aims to encourage the advancement of the chemical enterprise and its practitioners through information dissemination, encompassing facets of current research chemistry, between chemistry postgraduates.

I eat, walk, breath and dream research. I see myself competing with world class researchers. International Honour Society, which is the world’s largest honour Society. This society strives to bring together students from diverse faculties and degree programs within the university environment and it is also geared towards promoting leadership development, academic excellence and community service. Upon completion of my studies, I would find it most fulfilling to enter the realm of science communication. This is the perfect platform to engage public audiences effectively and to clear up any misconceptions about careers in science. I envisage science communication as a way of making science more accessible and significant to diverse audiences, especially to those who are not scientists. To young women who are contemplating a tertiary education: Do not allow social norms to influence major life decisions and your career path. Learning is one of the greatest adventures in life and being educated will give you a higher priority and position in the world, but above all, it will give you the utmost sense of self-satisfaction.

Style by shaheeda column by shaheeda mahomed We all dream of perfect skin but or just to set the foundation. But steer clear of this method if you don't like heavy most women suffer with makeup and if you have extremely dry pigmentation and blemishes. skin. Love it or hate it makeup is there to help us achieve the BB Creams and Tinted appearance of perfect skin. Moisturisers: The basis of any makeup application is foundation. Choosing a foundation to suit your skin tone and type is extremely important and this is something that many woman get wrong.

-How to choose the correct colour for your skin tone? This is about the most difficult part in finding a foundation as sometimes you don't find the exact colour to suit your skin tone. If you use one too light then your face will look grey and ashy. There's a solution to this you can mix a dark colour and a light colour to get a shade closest to your skin tone. This isn't exactly the most cost effective so I suggest buying the one slightly darker if it's closer to your skin tone as this would appear a lot more natural than a lighter shade.

- How to choose the correct foundation for your skin type? There are different types of foundations as everyone has different skin concerns.

These aren't exactly foundations but they possess a very light coverage if that's what you prefer. It's also a good option for mature skin as it won't settle into wrinkles. This is not for you if you want complete coverage. A little tip if you don't want to spend on a tinted moisturizer mix a little bit of your foundation (if it's liquid or cream) with your face cream to create your own tinted moisturizer.

What tools to use when applying makeup? - Foundation Brushes: These are ideal if you want a heavier finish as this applies the foundation directly on top of the skin. - Makeup sponges: Recently these are a lot more popular as they make it easier to apply foundation than with a brush. These sponges blends foundation into the skin giving it a more natural appearance. My tip is to purchase latex free sponges and use them damp, as this helps with getting rid of excess product. - Your fingers can be used to apply liquid foundation but it can be messy and I don't suggest it if it's a heavier foundation.

Foundations can be categorized as light, light-medium, medium and full coverage. Light coverage is the most natural and Liquid and cream foundation is ideally does not cover imperfections. A suited for normal, dry and combination light-medium coverage is the most skin, because they can be hydrating. This popular for daily use as you can use it isn't the best solution for oily skin but if sheer or layer it for more coverage. A you prefer liquid foundations and you medium coverage foundation is build-able have oily skin look for one with a matte so you can achieve full coverage if you finish or set your foundation with a use more than one layer. A full coverage powder. foundation is generally a lot heavier and not the best for everyday wear.

Liquid Foundation and Cream:

Powder Foundation:

This type of foundation is best suited for normal, combination and oily skin types. Powder foundation can also be used over liquid foundation to cover up oily arrears

I hope this helps you to find the foundation that suits your skin. My main suggestion is to get your skin assessed and find out your skin concerns before purchasing a foundation.

WHEN is it time to clear out your cosmetics? A difficult question as some of them come with an expiry date, some do not. A lot of people are not as meticulous about checking expiry dates on make-up as they are with food products; so it is up to the user to keep track of when each beauty item was bought. Writing the purchase date on the bottom of the product will serve as a reminder and help you decide when that particular make-up has reached its sell-by date. How long to keep your make-up depends on what the product is. Some cosmetics last longer than others, and natural products have a much shorter life than commercial ones because they don’t contain preservatives. Storing cosmetics at an optimal temperature and keeping them properly sealed after use, will help them last longer. The more make-up is exposed to air and potential bacteria, the shorter will be the lifespan. Set time aside to deep clean your make-up bag by following some handy tests.

seal on the product. If the foundation has separated, looks chalky, has an 'off' smell or has entirely changed in colour, discard it. Always use clean brushes or sponge applicators to apply the foundation to prevent bacterial contamination. Blush, or rouge, enhances cheekbones. Powder blush can last as long as three years, but if it starts to clump together when you apply it, it's time for it to be thrown away. A cream blush, particularly if it’s water-based, will last a year before it’ll inevitably dry out. Again, if it smells funny, throw it away, because the only thing you'll be brushing on your skin is bacteria. Be extra careful about eye make-up. Whether you use eyeliner or prefer applying eye shadow to your lids, how long you keep eye make-up will depend on the products you’re using. An eye pencil can be kept for more than two years, but should always be sharpened before use. Clean eye shadow applicators in warm water after using them.

The product you must be the strictest about throwing out? Mascara. This eyelash enhancer should be replaced Instead of a quick swipe over your lips every four to six months. The applicator is before you go out, give your lipstick a repeatedly in and out of the container and 'smell' test. Lipsticks usually last a year, is therefore susceptible to picking up but as they generally contain pigments, bacteria. Changing your mascara oils, waxes and emollients they can turn frequently may help to prevent eye rancid. If there is a bit of a sour smell it is infections or irritation. Of course, the older time for that lipstick, lip gloss or lip balm mascara is, the more likely it will dry out. If to go. Also, if you've used the product you use an eyelash curler, replace it every and then had a cold or flu, it's advisable six months to a year since the to get rid of it. To extend the life of lipstick, ergonomics of the clamp will change with you can clean it with a cleansing wipe to regular use, ultimately putting your remove surface layer germs or bacteria. delicate lashes at risk. Foundations are used to colour-correct the complexion. They come in warm, neutral or cool shades and offer sheer, light, medium or full coverage. Like most make-up items, the life-span of foundation will depend on how it is made. While oil-based foundations last longer than water-based varieties, both should be removed from your make-up bag a year to 18 months after you’ve broken the

Most importantly, take good care of the tools of the trade. Cosmetic brushes can last for years if you treat them gently don't vigorously rub your brushes when you clean them or you’ll damage the hairs. Store them upright in a canister and wash softly every few months, preferably in baby shampoo. Air the brushes out well after washing them. Wash sponges and applicators in warm water and replace after one or two uses.

Club H2O...Out and about The youth group of the Hayfields Hindu Organisation, Club H2O have certainly been busy during the recent school holidays. Activities included yoga, hiking, spiritual interaction with cows, involvement in music lessons and a pamper morning at Fancy Face salon. St Charles College was pleased to welcome Lee and Lulu from Educate and Fascinate, who recently did a presentation about germs for the Pre-Primary and Junior Primary boys. This fun interactive show helped the boys understand how germs work in our bodies and the necessary precautions to take to prevent the spread of germs.

The Grade R’s from The Wykeham Collegiate enjoyed a fun morning at the Botanical Gardens

PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES! By Rosemary Antolik

AS mentioned in a previous issue of Galaxy News, not all plants are edible, but there are some flowers in your garden that you could eat, should you wish to try something different. By adding petals to your dish makes it look more attractive and appetising, and you will add a unique flavour to that tried and tested recipe. Take a walk around your garden and look at your flowers from a different angle. Imagine 'geraniums au gratin', 'nettle curry' , 'marinated marigolds' or 'stir fried nasturtiums'! It is not a new idea to eat flowers as it was the common practice in the Middle Ages. King Charlemagne apparently enjoyed exotic dishes such as violet fritters, lavender in aspic and pickled rosebuds. He called flowers 'the friend of physicians and the praise of cooks.' In these more enlightened days with cooking shows and recipe books becoming ever more popular, there is an adventurous trend to try new ideas, flavours and colour combinations, with chefs, cooks and families turning to flowers and petals for something different.

AS we enter deeper into winter and, as a result of the continuing drought, the countryside and gardens are looking bleak and bare. Fortunately, though, nature has blessed us with the vibrant colours from the indigenous flowering plants that brighten up the dull winter landscape. Particular favourites seen alongside our roads and in private gardens, are members of the aloe family. There are 150 species of aloes that are indigenous to South Africa, which grow from the coast to the high mountains,

You can grow your own edible flowers and herbs in among your vegetables, for an eye-catching display and tempting scents. Some can be planted in containers, such as heartsease violas, nasturtiums and marigolds. The more they are picked the more profusely will they flower. Make sure the flowers are edible and free from pesticides and sprays. If you are just starting down the culinary flower road, try small quantities at first in case you have an allergy to them. Salad packs sold in supermarkets often have edible petals in them, as they do brighten up a salad and add flavour. Some edible flowers include the blossoms from fruit trees, acacias, carnations, cornflowers, day lilies, dahlias, forget-me-nots, hibiscus, gladioli, honeysuckle, lavender, calendula marigolds (not French or African), nasturtiums, pansies, pinks, primroses, sage and violets. The flowers from the standard culinary herbs and vegetables can also be eaten.

FOOD

Just think how handy it could be unexpected guests? Just pop out and pick some flowers to eat! It might be rather difficult, though, to persuade the kids that snacking in the garden is preferable to ordering takeaway pizzas or burgers!

Scrambled eggs with Marigolds Beat 4 eggs, 4 tablespoons milk, pinch each of salt, pepper, nutmeg. Scramble in 1 tablespoon butter. When almost cooked, add 2 washed, chopped marigolds. Serve on toast and garnish with marigolds.

HOME & GARDEN

Into the “Green Scene” By Sarisha Ramanand

Are we afraid of the digital future? Let us take a deeper look into why ‘moving with the times’ can be a double edged sword. We never stop learning, inventing and pushing the boundaries. But has ‘man’ asked himself, “Evolve at what cost?” and at “whose cost?” Are we losing our planet at the expense of our failure to see our potential to make better choices? Are we afraid of the digital future to the point where we shut off and feel paralysed by our trendy smart phones and virtual gadgets? While the movement into the digital age is nothing to be afraid of, the health of our planet must not be taken for granted in the process. Instead we must see this change in human history as a window into a better future for our planet and the human race. One of the classic failures of society today, is not being able to recognise the power of bridging the gap between the

‘old’ and the ‘new’. The digital age simply takes us into an era where information is readily available and accessible to us. Information that would have been difficult or impossible to find previously. We must keep in mind that ‘going digital’ is also about ‘going green’ in many ways. Whilst there are many trade-offs between the amount of paper we use to the watts of energy being consumed by our power-hungry techno-savvy devices, we must not lose sight of the bigger picture, “the only constant in this world is change itself”. Before you slander this technological age and its touch screen addictions, we must be fair and recognise that change is a normal part of evolution and life itself. From the beginning of time man has strived for growth, newness, innovation and basically anything that pushes us forward in this race for evolutionary supremacy. This is human nature.

Many books have been written explaining that our genetic makeup has the potential to shape human culture by what we choose to do and how we choose to do it. Why is it that as a species we choose technological advancement but we do not choose to make better choices about conserving our environment? Bridging the gap between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ might just be the answer, allow me to explain further. Today’s ‘millennial’ generation and yesterdays ‘baby boom’ generation have much to offer one another. It is as simple as the exchange of knowledge, wisdom and respect between generations. Yesterday’s generation failed to make better decisions about maintaining the health of our planet but can offer their ‘lessons learned’ wisdom to the millennial generation to avoid making the same mistakes. In the same token, today’s youth can help older generations transition into becoming more familiar with fast paced technological lifestyles. Finding a balance between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ is not always easy but definitely worth it in the race to save our life-supporting environments.

sense. Going digital is one of the ways we’ve chosen to reduce the amount of natural resources we use. Our daily choices can do one of two things; cause more harm to the world around us or help heal our environment one mindful decision at a time. WINTER- A GOOD TIME FOR GENERAL GARDEN MAINTENANCE

By Rosemary Antolik

THIS time of the year is not very busy in the garden as far as planting goes, and especially with the ongoing drought. Luckily, most of our winter days are sunny enough to enjoy pottering around in the garden seeing to general chores such as cleaning, painting and repairing fences and garden structures that need it. Paved areas can be washed down and pebbles and gravel washed and repositioned. It is also a good time to overhaul and check gardening tools and lawnmowers. Cleaning, oiling and sharpening will keep your equipment in good working condition, ready for use as spring draws nearer.

In the flower garden, keep fertilising and dead heading flowering plants. Protect frost sensitive plants, young trees and shrubs. The latter can be sheltered using hessian supported with sticks, but leaving an opening at the top to avoid contact with the plant. Flower bulbs should be starting to show through and they could do with a dressing of fertiliser, taking care not to let it touch the young leaves. To extend the spring flowering season, you can still sow some sweet-peas, cornflowers and pansies.

MAKE EVERYDAY A MANDELA DAY

Page 20

In July, South Africa celebrates former president Nelson Mandela's birthday. 18 July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day, but as South Africans we embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July. This gives everyone the opportunity to heed the call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. As each person acts, they fuel momentum toward positive change, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mr Mandela’s values – fighting injustice, helping people in need and practicing reconciliation. What can you do for future Mandela Months? Here are some ideas on how you can contribute: Contact your local HIV organisation and find out how you can help. Help out at your local hospice. Many terminally ill people have no friends or family who can visit them. Take a little time to have a chat and find out what they need.

Mr Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994. As a champion of reconciliation, he was instrumental in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was set up by South Africa’s Government of National Unity to help deal with the atrocities of apartheid. Before his presidency, Mandela was heavily involved in anti-apartheid activities. He served 27 years in prison, many of which were spent with other sentenced freedom fighters. While officially retired, he continued to voice his opinion on topical humanitarian issues and campaigns globally for peace, children and the fight against HIV and AIDS. Government calls on all South Africans to contribute to the social and economic security of Africans, by living the values of our Constitution that provides for the rights of all people living in our country and the affirms democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom for all.

Bigger, with added lightness: 2016 Audi A4, 2.0T FSI Sport S-tronic as previously. The bigger dimensions created more passenger space while the boot stayed the same, at 480 litres.

Despite the car’s increased size, it lost some weight – as much as 120 kg on certain models. Design tweaks reduced its Cd to 0.23; as slippery as that last piece of soap in the bath water. Redeveloped five-link axles and retuned power steering made it more responsive. And it flies like a greased ballbearing from a six-band catty. Just as the engine’s torque curve starts declining, at 4200 rpm, maximum power kicks in to give you an unexpected one-two in the kidneys. It’s an excellent hooligan machine.

There have been some changes to A4, Audi’s top selling medium saloon. The little-loved CVT transmission made way for a seven-speed, S-tronic dual-clutch unit. The 1800 cc turbo motor was swapped for a 2.0-litre, increasing power by 20 kilowatts to 140, while maximum torque remained unchanged at 320 Newton-metres. WOMEN - THE ROCKS OF THE COUNTRY SIXTY years ago, on 9th August 1956, more than 20 000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, in protest against the 'pass laws' of the ruling apartheid government. This legislation required black South Africans to carry an internal identification document, which infringed on their right to freedom of movement. Led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, the peaceful protestors dropped off petitions at the offices of Prime Minister J.G. Strijdom, after which they stood in silence for thirty minutes. In honour of this moment, a song was

composed 'Wathin' Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo' - Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock. Today, these words still represent the courage and strength of women in our country.

the gogos. Women have been a force to reckon with for many centuries - equality in the workplace and the right to vote were hard fought for by courageous and determined women in history. Many well-known names come to mind, but there were numerous unsung heroines who swelled the ranks of those who joined in the fight for women's rights. The same applies today. There will always be the 'names' in the foreground but on this National Women's Day we should also remember those who silently and untiringly work to improve the quality of life of those less fortunate than themselves in an effort to make a better future for all.

With the dawn of democracy in South Africa, in 1995, August 9 was declared a public holiday - National Women's Day and is celebrated annually with festivities such as business breakfasts and speeches by women holding prominent positions. But thought should also be spared for those many women who diligently work and strive to do their best for their families, and communities, often in adverse conditions. They are the rocks of our society - the wives, the mothers,

By Rosemary Antolik There is an old saying: 'Behind every successful man, there is a woman' . Society throughout the world is still rather patriarchal, but more and more women are taking their places next to, or in front of, their men. Time to change that aphorism, perhaps? Two famous women tell it like it is: "A woman is like a teabag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.' - Eleanor Roosevelt.

'If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.' - Margaret Thatcher.

We’re at a stage in our history where sporting sponsorships are changing and it’s therefore a huge honour for me to welcome Nashua on board as one of our new partners.” Nashua first got involved in South African sport way back in the 1970’s and through their powerful network of franchises nationwide, Nashua offers support wherever possible for local sports clubs and school teams across a range of different disciplines. “Nashua has

always been a keen supporter of local sporting talent,” said Nashua CEO, Mark Taylor. “Specifically in rugby, from the small community and school rugby teams sponsored by our franchises, to national and provincial sides, we like to believe we’ve played an integral part in the South African sports story. It’s about family, heritage and pride. “The Currie Cup partnership is a perfect fit for Nashua, a uniquely South African company built on a heritage of teamwork and togetherness. Nashua knows that sport, particularly rugby, brings South Africans together. We’re honoured to have played a role in iconic moments in SA sporting history and look forward to the great moments to come.” Nashua’s involvement with South African sport is as diverse as it is extensive – they’ve supported heroes from various sports, including Formula 1, boxing, cycling tennis and golf. Nashua is also invested in the development of cricket, with their ‘Art of Fast Bowling’ initiative.Along with the Currie Cup partnership, 2016 marks an exciting year for Nashua as they embark on a country-wide initiative to elevate rugby skills in over 100 schools through a programme run by their franchise network. Talented players who are recognised through the skills programme may be awarded bursaries in the ICT sector from Nashua, with a view to creating employment in this field. “My vision is that in the not-too-distant future, we’ll in a position to employ these young stars into the Nashua family,” says Taylor. “It’s about investing not only in sports skills, but also in valuable ICT skills, so we can give more students a chance at success.” The Currie Cup kicks off on the weekend of 5/6 August 2016, and most matches will be broadcast on SuperSport.

CRICKET South Africa has r announced the list of nominees for their annual sports awards evening and I must say I was not impressed. The team have performed pathetically over the past year and nobody really deserves much. When a non T20 specialist such as Hashim Amla is nominated for T20 player of the year and Temba Bavuma for test cricketer of the year (for basically one good innings), it proves just how far behind we are at the moment. I sincerely hope that Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir scoop everything as they are the only two have covered themselves in any glory over the past twelve months. WELL DONE to Serena r Williams and Andy Murray for winning Wimbledon; Henrik Stenson for claiming golf’s third major ‘The Open’; Pakistan for beating England at Lords (under Mickey Arthur) and to Lewis Hamilton for fighting back in the current F1 season. Also, don’t forget to catch the Tour de France.

r IF you think July was great, you are in for the ride of your life in August and it all revolves around one major event: Rio 2016 Olympic Games. SASCOC demands ten medals and for once I agree with them. Expect great things from the likes of Chad le Clos, Wayde van Niekerk, Caster Semenya, Bridgitte Hartley, Sunette Viljoen, our rugby sevens and our rowing teams. Good luck team SA, make us proud!
