BUSINESS NEWS
The month of May enters the fray and my, oh my, isn’t life outside bursting and blossoming? As per the moment the sun starts to shine, as does our social calendar. Expect this month to be populated by Maypoles, a multitude of livestock and a mammoth quota of events to fill one’s diary with. In community news we raise awareness of mental health and the stranglehold it can have on people’s lives. What can we do to keep our brains healthy and to become more mindful of the moment? Farmers and their livestock unite to grace parks and common land all over Surrey this month. The legendary Surrey County Show, the Surrey Heath County Show and The Merrist Wood Summer Show are all set to wow the crowds in their own unique way. We talk to arrows thrower and darts Don-mega, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor as the sport returns to its Hampshire home of Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green for the Champion of Champions. We also meet with England and Harlequin’s main man, Chris Robshaw, to talk Rugby, post six-nations, pre-world cup and much more. If Rugby and Darts are just that too uncouth for you, then we have a plethora of country pursuits for you to get your croquet mallet behind too. As ever, towards the final pages of this month’s publication, you’ll find all the exclusive offers available to you with The Good Time Guide Offer Card; ensuring that your leisure and entertainment time is that bit more affordable. So go, enjoy yourselves, send us a postcard and tell us all about it.
This month’s front page, as I’m sure you’ll notice, is a rather wonderful looking Jersey Cow, of which we shall name Felicity (we apologise to Felicity and her family, should she be known by another name). This pretty lady hails from Pierrepont Farm over in Frensham, who are one of the last remaining dairy farms in the area. Delve inside for more moos.
Yours Sincerely, Mr D’Arcy

Your Community News HARTLEY WINTNEY RUNNER CONQUERS SAHARA FOR CHARITY I t’s called the “toughest footrace in the world”: The Marathon des Sables. A 250km race across the Sahara desert in 45C heat over six gruelling days; just you, your backpack of provisions and your will to endure. And for Richard Revell of Hampshire it was not only the ultimate challenge to run the race on its 30th anniversary, but an opportunity to raise money for two charities close to his heart. He embarked on the race in early April, and has raised nearly all of his target, an astonishing £150,000. “It’s a staggering amount of money,” said Richard, “It’s absolutely humbling how generous people have been.”
That good will and the support of his fellow contestants helped him endure the infamous race which sees the highest drop rate on the fourth day, known as ‘the longest day’, a 92km marathon that saw him face a 17km sand dune that took nearly two hours to climb.
The money raised will help the Rainbow Trust, a charity that cares for over a quarter of the 6,000 UK families who have a child with lifethreatening illness, and PWSA, the only charity in the UK to care for families affected by the rare genetic disorder Prader-Willi syndrome.
“Knowing there was another 32km to go after that was a low point. Were it not for the support of the friends and family, the donors and the charities, I’m absolutely convinced that that was the breaking point, but they were the fuel that kept me putting one foot in front of the other.”
Richard ran two marathons every weekend for ten months to train for the race, and says: “Just when the training got so tough and soul-destroying, it was the charities that kept me going. I realised my battered and bruised body was nothing but a conduit for everyone’s good will.”
Richard finished 264th out nearly 1400 contestants and says “it was an event I will never forget.” Read the full story at www.theguide2surrey.com.
FARNBOROUGH’S VUE CINEMA OPENS THIS MONTH
W
ell, it’s only taken three years but finally, finally, Farnborough movie-goers need only travel as far as Kingsmead Shopping Centre to watch their favourite films on the big screen. Because Vue Cinema is ready to pull back the curtain on Friday 8th May. If any project could be said to have been ‘plagued by optimism’ then the Vue would be a good contender. Permission was granted to build the cinema and adjoin restaurants in March 2012 by Rushmoor Council, part of an £80 million project by St Modwen to regenerate the town centre. But it was initially
predicted that the cinema would be ready to go by the end of 2013. Reality set in so planners then pushed the date to summer 2014. Then December. And then, tenuously, May this year. So its happy news then that, after such a long wait, cinephiles can take their seats this month in Farnborough’s spangly new cinema complex, which features state-of-the-art 3D projectors and special event cinema such as National Theatre Live and Met Opera. FUTURE OF ‘INADEQUATE’ HARLINGTON UNDER CONSIDERATION
A
t a resident’s meeting held last month, Fleet Town Council put forward three proposals that could replace the town’s beleaguered entertainment venue, the Harlington. To secure the future of a venue that was described as ‘past its sell-by date’ and that costs £100,000 a year to keep open, town and district councillor Cllr Alan Oliver explained that the ‘minimum’ option available was a £1.5m renovation. A second option was to modify it which would cost £3.5m and mean the venue would be closed for up to two years. The preferred option offered by the council was the construction of a £7.5 million entertainment venue built in Gurkha Square

with the current building handed back to Hart for potential redevelopment. This would, however, be funded by a council tax rise. It was explained that this would result in an increase of around £43 for the year, or 81p a week, for the average Band D household in Fleet which follows a method utilised to build the Elizabeth Hall in Hook. Cllr Oliver said: “According to surveys we’re the best place to live and I personally think we deserve a quality leisure facility.” Whichever plan the council adopts, the future of the much-used Fleet Library is also uncertain but the potential remains to that the library would be replaced or incorporated within the new building.

Our Citizens... MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK This month the Mental Health Foundation celebrates Mental Health Awareness Week. Between 11th and 17th May, the charity and their supporters will be holding events up and down the country to raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing. Mental illness can take many forms including anxiety, depression, addiction, mood disorders and dementia to name just a few. Sadly, many people suffer in silence despite the many methods of support available within the community. We asked you your feelings about Mental Health…

Have you or anyone you know experienced mental health problems?
Is it easy to miss the signs of mental illness?
I’ve had depression for as long as I can remember. You feel like there’s always a black cloud over you, nothing’s in colour; you can go to an amazing concert and not hear the music. You just feel like a zombie. I admire anyone who says ‘I’m struggling, I need help.’
Yeah, but lots of people do. And lots of people do that don’t recognise it. I think it can be a bit of a taboo thing for people to admit that they are having problems. A lot of people might not know where to look for help. There’s a lot of help out there, but the first step is acknowledging it if you are having problems.
Photographer
What kind of help did you seek? I did go to the doctor for medication but I found it actually made it worse and gave me panic attacks, anxiety and made me withdraw. So I found the best therapy for me was to come off the medication and speak to my friends, get a counsellor and find someone to talk about it with. There is fantastic support out there if you look for it.

Is mental health something people find difficult to talk about? Yes. I think if you wanted to talk to someone who is suffering from mental illness you might be anxious about bringing it up, through fear of offending them or not seeing it from their point of you. It could be an awkward conversation and that seems like something that’s part of our society.
Business Owner
Without a doubt. People’s lives are so busy these days. And when you see someone is a certain way or having trouble it’s too easy to just think ‘pull yourself together’. People don’t understand it and they should.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
JO Programmer
JIM Youth Worker
I had a bit of a tough time at University. I broke up with someone and became depressed. I saw my doctor and got some prescription medication and it really helped.
I suffered a brain injury from an accident ten years ago. As a result I’ve met a lot of other people recovering from similar conditions. With help from a local charity, Headway, we learned how to live normal lives again.
Do you think there’s still a stigma attached to mental health? I think in terms of your friends and family it’s not an issue so much, but maybe when someone has to ring up work, for example, and say that they’re having a tough time and can’t get out of bed - if you had a cold it wouldn’t really be a problem. But I don’t think socially there’s as much of a stigma anymore.
Is mental health difficult for people to talk about? You don’t want to be defined by your condition. At first people treat you differently and can’t see past that. But the services that are available can give you confidence and coping strategies that help you overcome obstacles and get back to normal life.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Mental Health Foundation are promoting the practice of Mindfulness. But what is it and how can it be beneficial? While it can mean different things to different people, at the heart of it mindfulness helps you observe the way you think and feel about your experiences, whether good or bad. This really does have the power to change the way you manage and react to stressful situations, giving you a vital tool to stay mentally healthy. Unlike more subjective forms of meditation, mindfulness has an ever-expanding body of evidence that shows that it really works. You can practice it for 5 minutes or 5 hours a day; the beauty of it is how easy it is to adapt it to suit you.
There are numerous sources and centres to learn mindfulness near you but for more information and to find support for any form of mental illness visit:

ith 1 in 10 individuals having problems with their mental health, it is highly likely that we all know someone who has suffered at some point. Yet why is the conversation surrounding the subject still seen as something of a taboo? Generally, we are much more forthcoming with our physical problems. Yes our bodies offer the most apparent and tangible problems, yet the mind is quite literally the motor that propels, organises and instructs our bodies. If our minds are suffering due to anxiety, stress and sleep deprivation, then the implications for the rest of the body are going to be negative. It’s hardly going to promote a physically healthy existence, is it? The list of mental health issues that have been analysed that exist in today’s ‘mindscape’ is more than extensive; from everyday worries and anxieties to more serious long-term conditions, it seems anything that consistently affects your mind is potentially an issue or matter to look into - so then by golly let’s talk about it! In everyday conversation and down the pub, let’s talk to one another.
Being Mindful
S
et up by the Mental Health Foundation in 2000, the week of events aims to raise awareness and debate on issues that surround the mind and its daily effects on everyday life. With a subject matter so complex and relatively undiscovered, the charity chooses a theme to explore every year in its goal to enlighten the masses. This year is something that we can all try and be conscious of Mindfulness. You’ve probably heard a lot about Mindfulness in the media recently. Perhaps you think it means sitting cross-legged on the floor and meditating. Maybe you think mindfulness means to simply concentrate on your breathing, or that mindfulness means to focus on your bodily sensations. Well mindfulness is all of those things, and so much more. Mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment, without getting stuck
in the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness can be practiced standing, sitting and walking, both indoors and out. It can be practiced at home, in schools, at work or simply out and about. You can practice mindfulness for 5 minutes or 5 hours. That’s the great thing about mindfulness; you can tailor it to suit your own needs. What you may be surprised to hear is that you have probably been mindful at some point in your life and didn’t even know it. Have you gone for a long walk, breathing in the crisp, fresh air and then suddenly realised that four hours have passed? Have you listened so intently to a song that for a moment, you weren’t thinking about anything but how beautiful the melody was? That’s mindfulness! Contrary to popular belief, mindfulness isn’t about emptying your mind of thoughts and ‘zoning out’. It can mean different things to different people. At the heart of it, mindfulness helps people observe the way they think and feel about their experiences, whether good or bad. This can really change the way you

SURSAR: THE WATER TEAM T
he Winter Floods that came between 2013 and 2014 are still a raw memory in many people’s minds. There’s so much that springs to mind when one thinks of the floods that it would be forgivable to forget the positive images that we all saw on the screens and that some of us saw with our own eyes. Like the men and women in red. Surrey Search and Rescue has its own water team made up of specially trained technicians whose job it is to bring the team’s skill and presence off dry land and into the hazardous realm of the water. The team are (very basically) divided into two core groups of technician; Flood Responder and Swift Water Rescue Technicians. The Flood Responders (they’re the guys in Yellow Helmets) are trained to work safely near or on water providing an initial response; checking people are ok in their houses, wading through
the floods to pull boats, bring supplies or evacuating those who are trapped. With some pictures emerging of children playing in flooded streets, it may seem strange that while they play happily in the brown water, Flood Responders are in dry suits, carefully making their way down streets, checking under their feet with poles, cautiously moving forward. A flooded street is incredibly dangerous. Burst manhole covers under the surface for example can trap your feet, and if there’s an undercurrent not visible on the surface, you can be swept away. These guys are cautious for good reason. And the dry suits? Well, aside from spending the day in freezing water, the brown liquid contains a staggering amount of bacteria and germs. Think about it; sewage is liquid at the end of the day, if the ground’s flooded the sewage mixes in. You’re swimming and paddling in…well, you know. The Swift Water Rescue Technicians (the Red Helmets) do exactly the same job but are also trained further to operate in extremely fast flowing water. The
crashing ferocity of water has been shown time and time again how dangerous it is, and although severe flows and thundering bodies of water were not always the first images we saw that winter, an operator with the skills to swim in the most treacherous of conditions is essential. Unlike the flow of the sea, a flow in a river is relentless; it doesn’t stop and once it’s caught hold of something it will rip it away. Getting in the water is the last thing anyone wants to do. It is really dangerous and unlike other areas of Search and Rescue the risk to life is extremely high. A lot of the training centres on saving people from the water without getting in. Boats, rope work and good team organisation will always top a swimmer in the water. That’s the risk the guys took during the flood and that’s why Search and Rescue is such an important part of the emergency services. Without them, the outcome of those floods could have been a lot worse than it already was.

MAGNA CARTA: WHAT’S THAT ABOUT THEN? by Will Knowlton The story takes place in 1215. Standard villain King John was forced to sign this epic document called the Magna Carta. Essentially this was a contract saying that the king was not to think that he was above the law and was expected to protect the rights of the people as part of his job spec. John became king in 1199 when his brother, Richard the Lionheart, ended up at the wrong end of a crossbow bolt and died with no kids to tow the line. John had a bad temper and was a general all-round douche. Sufficed to say the barons did not like him. To be fair, John had inherited a bit of a hornets nest; England was having one of many nasty wars with France which was emptying the coffers fast. To fund the war, John taxed the barons something chronic. He also managed to really tick off the Pope who excommunicated him. So here was England, in the middle of an economic downturn, dealing with overseas conflicts and a leader who wanted to tax the rich to deal with the deficit. Sound familiar? After sixteen years of John’s tax system the barons, led by Robert Fitzwalter, had had enough. Fitzwalter rallied the Barons and marched down to London, taking over the city. They called themselves The Army of God (Presumably because The Army of Tax Dodging Landowners was a bit of a mouthful). King John met the barons on June 15th 1215 (a Monday) at Runnymede, as it was neutral ground with convenient parking and excellent local shops. Here the barons demanded that King John sign a document called the Magna Carta which guaranteed them certain rights. If John signed it he would be agreeing to do his duty as King of England, upholding the law and running a fair government. In return, the barons agreed not to kill him.
Game of Thrones Type Twist (without Dragons): Of course, no bugger had any intention of sticking to the agreement. First John got his lawyers on the case to try and nullify the contract, even getting the Pope to declare it illegal (as they were now friends again). In return the barons just dug in at London, refusing to leave. By now the country was teetering on all out civil war and in the sort of move the CIA would have approved of, the French offered military aid to the barons. For the next year the barons and John slapped each other about with no one gaining anything. Then in 1216 John died of dysentery in Newark Castle. The war went on for a bit but ultimately the royalists started to gain more ground and by 1217 the war was done. Henry III, who was all of about 9, had his protectorate William Marshall resurrect the amended Magna Carta and the future government structure started to take shape. The ideas in the Magna Carta became lasting principles of liberty and freedom to us. Three of the 67 clauses are still in force as English law today, including the freedom of the English Church, the ancient liberties of the City of London as well as the right to due process. The right to consistently request your friends play Candy Crush saga and to take photos of your lunch was not.

We spoke to the two time BDO World Champion and fourteen-time PDC World Championship champion about the night at Lakeside; and he is excited by what the night has to offer. “Fans will be seeing some fantastic players going head-to-head on the night – obviously me against Barney [Raymond van Barneveld] is always a big game but there’s James Wade, Mark Webster, Martin Adams and Ted Hankey playing too, and Bobby George against Andy Fordham who are both big characters.”

“Winning my first two World Championships in 1990 and 1992 at Lakeside was special for different reasons – the 1990 win over Eric [Bristow] was my first World Championship and nobody expected me to win. In 1992 it was a brilliant match against Mike Gregory which went all the way to a sudden-death leg.

The fifty-four year-old admitted that he’d lost count on the amount of times he had played at Lakeside, but cited two very special memories the venue holds close to his heart:
“They’ll always be special memories for me, but obviously now I don’t get to Lakeside very often so this will be a nice night for me. The last time I was there was to do some TV work for the BBC which was quite a while ago, so it’s going to be a trip down memory lane!” “It’s got great history and because of the size and layout it creates a really good atmosphere.”

THE SURREY COUNT In a summer packed with fetes, fairs
and family fun there really is only one to rule them all. And that’s the Surrey County Show. It’s a bank holiday extravaganza, full of all the spectacle and excitement visitors have come to expect from the annual event. This is a day when the countryside comes to town thanks to the Surrey Agricultural Society, who have been putting on the County Show at Guildford’s Stoke Park since 1954. After last year’s 60th anniversary extravaganza, you might think the show couldn’t get any bigger or better. We’re happy to tell you that this year’s Surrey County Show could be the best one yet…
Farming The Surrey County Show is a magnificent celebration of the county’s rich agricultural history, where the rural life that makes Surrey so special rolls into town with a dozen Noah’s Arks of animals in tow: •
There’s the Bocketts Farm Animal Interactive Experience where children can meet rabbits, guinea pigs, lambs, chicks and ducklings.
•
Family fun dog show. Take your dog to the show and enter on the day. Classes for pedigree and non-pedigree dogs, plus novelty classes including ‘Best rescue dog’ and ’Most handsome dog’.
•
Cattle – Highlands, Dexters, Jerseys and more.
•
Hundreds of sheep, pigs, dairy goats and pygmy goats.
•
All sorts of horses from hairy natives to huge hunters to dainty children’s show ponies.
•
Horses and hounds with the chance for children to meet these friendly animals.
•
Bees and honey including a live bee release.
• Hundreds of fancy poultry and waterfowl all competing for the top prizes.

Y SHOW 2015
Spring Bank Holiday Monday 25th May
Family Everywhere you look at the Surrey County Show there’s something to thrill all ages. And you’ll find the hottest action at the Grand Arena. This year sees the first ever performance of the Stampede Stunt Company’s ‘Magna Carta’; stunts, thrills and trial by combat. Fast and furious Scurry Driving (that’s pairs of tiny yet feisty ponies tackling an obstacle course flat out), Grand Prix show jumping and much more all capped off with a soaring, spectacular hot air balloon finale.
Food and Shopping Want to know why Surrey is such a foodie’s paradise? You’ll find the answer at the glorious Food and Drink Hall and Surrey Farmers’ Market. Here you’ll find myriad stalls from the county’s best producers selling locally grown, reared, baked and homemade food and drinks. The AGA Rangemaster Food Theatre is one of the most popular draws at the show and with good reason. Over the course of the day you can watch how some of Surrey’s best chefs create their favourite dishes. This year will feature unmissable demonstrations from Guildford chef Dan Britten and a glimpse into the delicious arts of cheese making from Michaela Allam at Norbury Blue Cheese. Beyond food you can also listen to John Negus present Gardener’s Question Time, watch the floristry displays and competition or saunter among the many craft stalls for wonderful gifts.

MEET THE JERSEY COWS
OF PIERREPONT FARM Making their annual appearance at the Surrey County Show this year is one farm that exemplifies our county’s forward thinking approach to agriculture. Pierrepont Farm in Frensham near Farnham honours the region’s dairy farming traditions while employing modern methods, compassion for their animals and a commitment to educating visitors about ethical farming and wildlife. Gifted to the Countryside Restoration Trust in 2006, this dairy farm is set over 200 acres on Surrey heathland. As well as extensive pasture, the farm has wooded areas and a wet meadow next to the River Wey, which has been designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) because of its important flora and fauna. Dairy Farmer Mike Clear and his family tend a herd of pedigree Jersey cattle and, with the CRT’s help, have installed a new state-of-theart dairy, improving the welfare of the whole herd. How state of the art? Put it this way: the cows milk themselves! The cattle are free to come and go from field to paddock whenever they like, and when they feel it’s time for milking they sedately queue up to let the farm’s ‘robot’s gently do the work. So if you’re heading to the Show this month be sure to meet some of Pierrepont’s beautiful prize Jerseys. Visit crtinsurrey.org.uk for more information
Festival of Food, Farming and Wildlife Sunday 7th June is a perfect opportunity to visit Pierrepont Farm when they host their annual open day. The festival aims to promote a better understanding of the link between farming, wildlife and the food on our plates. You’ll be able to visit the milking parlour and watch the pedigree Jersey cows milking themselves as well as be able to get up close and personal with the happy cattle themselves. With plenty of great activities and games for kids, and stalls selling local foods and gifts, this is a great way to visit a modern working dairy farm and have some fun too.
The Festival of Food, Farming and Wildlife takes place between 11am and 4pm. Entry is free. The entrance to Pierrepont Farm is off The Reeds Road in Frensham, between the Rural Life Centre and the Frensham Garden Centre. Satnav users need to enter the postcode GU10 3BP

The Fleet Food Festival 2015
Following last year’s 7,000 visitor sell-out success, the Fleet Food Festival returns to the Views on Sunday 24th May. The only question is… What’s cooking? Hands down the culinary highlight of the town’s year, the Fleet Food Festival is a celebration of the very best of the regions’ food producers, giving visitors the chance to sample and graze with happy abandon on the mouth-watering variety of food available locally. Bring a bag and an appetite because this year you’ll find over 50 stalls offering freshly prepared street food like pizzas, paella, curries and pies; bakers selling artisan breads and patisserie and
cheesemakers providing local farm-produced cheeses. One of the most popular draws from last year makes a welcome return in 2015: the Cookery Theatre with free cookery demonstrations from top local chefs including Ian Nagelson demonstrating the art of Vietnamese cuisine and award winning chef, Rob Kennedy, Executive Chef at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Over at the Food and Wine marquee, Paul Bowler, Founder of the Winchester
Distillery will be taking the audience on a whirlwind tour across 300 years of British gin making while Drew from Cellar Magneval will give a fascinating talk about what goes into producing their own blended wines. In and around all these glorious foodie festivities will be live music from local acts Key Lime Pi and Champagne at the Blitz with children’s play area and places to picnic.
The Fleet Food Festival 2015 takes place on Sunday 24th May, 11am - 5pm at the Views behind the Harlington Centre. Entrance is £1 but under 5s go free. More info at fleetfoodfestival.co.uk

WHERE TO EAT: Heron on the Lake, Fleet
WE HEAD TO FLEET’S COUNTRY PUB ON THE WATER TO CATCH SOME RAYS AND A TASTE OF WHAT THE HERON ON THE LAKE HAS TO OFFER… We’d timed it just right. Our first visit to Fleet’s Heron on the Lake was helped tremendously for being on a glorious day during what has been one of the most glorious Aprils in recent memory. We weren’t alone. The McMullens pub’s lakeside terrace was packed with families, businesspeople and ladies who lunch, all basking in the sunshine and having a good time. The Heron on the Lake knows its theme and runs with it. There’s a nod to the nautical everywhere you look from the ‘jetty’ boardwalk that leads to the entrance to the upended lifeboats and the ropes that ring the terrace. It’s a fun, friendly place to come to, especially if you’re coming to the Heron on the Lake, as we were, for the food. We took a table overlooking the gleaming water where we could watch the ducks and swans go by - when they weren’t being harassed by one particularly obnoxious seagull that is. I decided to get my brunch on to start with and a dish of egg benedict didn’t disappoint. A perfectly poached egg, yolk oozing into a spot-on hollandaise sauce atop ham and muffin. Another starter of smoked haddock rarebit brought a happy hum of mustard beneath a cheesy sauce grilled over tender fish. On to mains, and whatever else I was expecting to find on the Heron’s menu, I most definitely wasn’t expecting to see Bouillabaisse. This classic French fish stew is hard to find and even harder to find cooked well. Fortunately the chefs pull it off, with a rich, smoky, savoury tomato broth thick with vegetables and generous hunks of prawn, scallop, squid and hake. By that point the seagull had abandoned the ducks to alight atop a nearby post and beadily eye my lunch instead, so between the seabird, the fish, the water and the Heron’s décor I began to fall happily under an illusion of being by the seaside.
Across from my stew a rack of lamb was cooked to a handsome pink blush which gave up it’s juices over golden sautéed potatoes and roasted veg. Desserts were -always a crowd pleaser - chocolate profiteroles and a hearty slab of apple and blueberry cheesecake -also a crowd pleaser - which was both light and indulgent. On a hot day with time on your hands the Heron on the Lake is easily one of the best spots in Fleet to come for lunch, dinner or even just a drink. The staff are friendly and didn’t seem to break a sweat despite the heat and the multitude of diners. But out on the sundrenched terrace, it’s easy to forget that there is a very decent pub inside, one with character and charm that should make a visit here worthwhile at any time of year. With the BDO World Darts Championships been and gone for 2015, fans of the muchloved arrows mustn’t grumble, as Frimley Green’s Lakeside plays host to Telectronics Champions of Champions this May... Big names (and even bigger physiques) will be on display with Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade, Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams, Ted Hankey, Mark Webster, Andy ‘The Viking’ Fordham and Bobby George all battling to become the champion of champions. lakesidesurrey.co.uk
Saturday May 9th sees the start of the South East Premier Rugby League season get underway, with our very own Surrey Sharks travelling south to visit Sussex Merlins. However, Sharks’ first home game comes two weeks later when they host Hampshire’s Southampton Spitfires at Guildford’s Surrey Sports Park. Rugby League is a fast-paced, hard-hitting sport that’s gradually migrating south from its traditional Yorkshire roots with participation and following increasing down south rapidly. So why not cheer on Surrey Sharks and help them kick-off their home campaign with a win? pitchero.com

So grab yourself a ticket, a cold beer and sit and enjoy a Kevin Pietersen century (not guaranteed). kiaoval.com

FISHING
Country Pursuits In Surrey we are fortunate in that we have an abundance of fields and open spaces. Be it bone-shaking biking or the patient serenity of fishing, here’s where to enjoy a country pursuit… Clay Pigeon Shooting Clay pigeon shooting involves the art of shooting at special flying targets – ‘clays’ - with a gun. A genuinely fun and competitive country pursuit, and this one can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone. Where to do it: Bisley Shooting Ground bisleyshooting.co.uk 01483 797017

Farnham Archery is located near Elstead and is a wonderful venue to learn this sport. Be sure to register for their one day course on the 30th May.

Birds of prey are truly magnificent beasts, so if you’d like to try your hand at summoning them to ‘hunt’, then we applaud your individuality. A great way to spend an outdoor afternoon.
Providing you have the correct license and permission, there’s a good chance that you can rock up to your local lake with a rod and some bait, but there are several fisheries across the county.

Oh yes – you can even learn this, arguably considered the most ‘privileged’ of all sports, should you so desire. And why not? It’s fun, it’s active, and it’s outdoors… If a country pursuit that sets you apart from the norm is your thing, then definitely give this a go…

Mountain Biking
Croquet involves hitting plastic or wooden balls with a mallet through hoops, with your team assigned specific colours. It’s really rather good fun, you know…
The best thing about this sport is that you simply need a suitable bike, safety equipment, and practice. However, for rapid improvement, then contacting the professionals such as All Biked Up is a great idea!

TALKING TO... England’s ‘nearly men’ tag remained stuck firmly on their shoulders as they finished runners-up in this year’s Six Nations for the fourth successive time, after falling just short of a twenty-six point victory when they defeated France 55-35 in their final game.
The result meant Ireland, who had provided England’s only loss throughout the campaign, were named champions for the second successive year. England captain and Harlequins Flanker Chris Robshaw admitted that the loss was hard to take, but that there were
plenty of positives to take out of the tournament as a whole. “I was devastated, to be honest, and to fall short on points is tough to take, but you have to look at the positives now. Some of the young guys stepping in are really good, they really stood up and took big tackles
and were also on hand when injuries happened too – that’s always encouraging. “Our attacking shape has really improved too and we showed that. People knew we were good defensively, but our attacking needed improving and we’ve got there – you

Chris Robshaw look at the amount of tries we scored and the amount of tries we potentially left on the pitch too, especially the Scotland game, we should’ve scored more.” It was the first time in over one hundred years that England had scored over seven tries against France and they also finished top try scorers of the 2015 tournament; stats that only further support the England captain’s optimism regarding his side’s improving attacking threat. The 28-year-old was keen to take these positives into this year’s England World Cup that starts in September however he was reluctant to give his thoughts on how far his side could go. “Look, the World Cup’s an extremely competitive thing. When you get to the World Cup Group Stages you need to be on your metal every time as we found with the Six Nations. When we went over to Ireland in the Six Nations we weren’t on-point and it cost us, potentially, the entire tournament.
what could be perceived as pressure and use it in a positive way, it’ll only help.” Domestically with the Harlequins it’s been a very stop-start season that looks to be ending in disappointment, Robshaw, however, has been impressed in parts and has been happy with his performances on a personal level. “Unfortunately we’ve been a little up-and-down this season and it’s probably reflected on our league position, we’ve just been too inconsistent. We have glimpses where we play some really good rugby, Leicester games and Wasp games come to mind, but again it’s the

The Harlequins train at Guildford’s Surrey University Sports Park, and after some substantial improvements the England captain feels the facilities can really help the Quins push on and push higher up the table next season. “It’s fantastic [Surrey Sports Park]; we have our new stateof-the-art facilities that have replaced our old ones which weren’t particularly great. Our new one is top notch, with a state-of-the-art gym, superb, well-kept pitches and, well, everything we need. It also helps us as a club to evolve and hopefully get back to where the Harlequins should be. As England captain, Surreyborn Robshaw is seen as a role model for so many aspiring rugby stars and for them he advised: “Work hard and enjoy it. You’ve got to put the hard work in, if it’s going out and do some extra fitness work on your own or simply some extra ball work, if you put in the hard work, you can achieve goals. Enjoy it, though, we enjoy it, we enjoy coming to work, although I don’t really consider it as work, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m very privileged to be a professional.”
“It’s not us against that country; it’s us against a team with the entire country behind us.”
“But going into the World Cup, we need to make sure that every time we go on the pitch, especially at Twickenham, we make sure all our details are spot on. The intensity has to be up there and our game plan needs to be spot on.” “I’m sure the pressure will build and grow because we are the home nation. But you can look at it as, it’s a huge incentive for us, it’s huge excitement and we’ve got sixty-million people supporting us. It’s not us against that country; it’s us against a team with the entire country behind us. If we use
consistency that we’ve just not been able to sustain this year. “I myself am enjoying it. When you go between country and club you mix with coaches and different players so it keeps you fresh and it keeps you on your toes. You do different drills, you have different players around you and different voices – it’s always important to stay fresh and, yeah, I feel I am and I’ve been happy with my performances for both England and Quins.

BUSINESS News CAMBERLEY CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT WOWS! Retailers in Camberley Town Centre are being given a chance to learn how to make a great impression on their customers. Businesses from within the Town Centre’s Business Improvement District (BID) are being offered the opportunity to brush up on their customer service skills with a range of workshops, provided free of charge by Collectively Camberley. The set of 3 accredited workshops are available to local businesses from the BID and are delivered in partnership with training bodies WorldHost and People1st.
The first workshop was held on 15 April at Camberley Theatre and welcomed a range of independent and national retailers including Alcatraz, Obelisk Way and The Mall’s Ask Me Point team. The remaining sessions will be run on 6th May and 17th June and can be booked directly with the BID team. The BID devised the training programme as a result of a large scale mystery shopping programme that took place late last year, with over 50 local businesses agreeing to have their service, products and local knowledge put to the test. Find out more at collectivelycamberley.co.uk.

CAMBERLEY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION TAKES STEP FORWARD
While news of Camberley Town Centre’s regeneration has been around for a year or so, on Tuesday 7th April it took a significant step forward when members of Surrey Heath Borough Council executive committee agreed to adopt a masterplan, setting out guidelines for development over the next 20 years – but initial changes will begin far sooner. This masterplan identifies four ‘opportunity areas’ where future change will be focused: London Road frontage, the High Street and Knoll Road area, Pembroke Broadway and the ‘cultural quarter’ around the council offices.
For each area there is a raft of improvement works listed to be led by the council and funding from developers. Additional funding will also come from Surrey Heath Borough Council and other groups such as Network Rail and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Some of the schemes could be underway as early as this year, although the proposed works are not expected to be finished until 2018 – and if the masterplan is anything to go by, this could just be the beginning… Find out more by visiting surreyheath.gov.uk/ camberley/future.
