Welcome to October! Cometh the month of Autumnal abundance and the countdown to the word that begins with C, concludes with the letter S and is often synonymous with giving, receiving, eating and the rest…ahem…but alas, there is much to do, much to see and much to digest until then my friends. Tis the month of harvest after all; the month that our tiny island of greatness bears much of its amazing produce - check out our pages on what is available to you, the humble vegetable picker, fan of foraging… Aside from the usual exploratory excursions that we love to bestow and will upon you, we also have the full run down of expected dates for your diary; the year on year parties that never tire from their tradition. Amongst the fiestas of food, the latter stages of the month herald the hauntingly inspired themes of Halloween. As the lights from the pumpkins faces fade into the night, we move into the month of November with a, whizz and a bang as bonfires and fireworks illuminate the night’s sky in memory of that guy, Guy Fawkes. Did we mention that we talk to charmer of all things deadly creature speaking, Bagshot born, Steve Backshall? No? Then read on, read on dearest reader. Enter, enjoy and tell your friends that you’ve just picked up possibly the best local publication you’ve ever encountered! Yours Sincerely, Mr D’Arcy

REWARD FOR FLY TIPPING TIP-OFFS!

PEOPLE POWER BRINGS COFFEE TO FRIMLEY GREEN! A dedicated coffee shop is to finally coming to the heart of Frimley Green! Hooray! Initially proposed as ‘The Frimley Green Coffee Shop Project’ back in April of this year, the project has gained momentum via Facebook, asking the local community for suggestions with regards to the naming of the site as well as what kind of produce will be served on a daily basis.

Surrey Heath Borough Council is responding to residents’ concerns about fly-tipping in the area by introducing a dedicated resource to tackle the problem. Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste such as builders’ rubble, garden waste and mixed household waste. The recently formed Counter Fraud and Corporate Enforcement team will investigate local fly tipping incidents with the aim of securing prosecutions against perpetrators. The council has launched an appeal for information page on its new website and are offering a financial award of up to £500 for information that leads to a conviction of those responsible. Residents are reminded of their duty to prevent the illegal fly-tipping of rubbish that might come from their homes. Household Waste Duty of Care Regulations (2005) state that residents are accountable for any waste leaving their property, including from builders or gardeners they employ to carry out work. Some residents and businesses have started using the local community recycling sites as dumping grounds. In a number of cases, containers have had to be removed. If there is not an appropriate container at a site and individuals leave material on the ground they are fly tipping and are liable to prosecution. Julia Greenfield, Surrey Heath’s Audit, Counter Fraud and Corporate

Enforcement Manager said: “People need to be aware they must ensure their household waste is disposed of properly. Any contractor they employ to do building work must have a carrier’s licence to transport waste. “It’s up to householders who are having work done like double glazing, new kitchens and bathrooms to check that any contractor they appoint to dispose of rubbish from their home, including building and garden waste, has a trade waste carrier’s licence. “If they don’t have this licence, they are not legally entitled to remove your rubbish.” Surrey Heath’s portfolio holder for community Councillor Vivienne Chapman said: “We are fortunate to have so many areas of outstanding natural beauty in Surrey Heath and it’s vital that we all work together to help preserve them. I understand that the Counter Fraud and Corporate Enforcement team is currently appealing for information on a large asbestos fly tip recently found in Chobham. It is disgraceful that someone has chosen to dump this dangerous waste in a rural area. The clean-up campaign associated with this fly tip will cost in excess of £1000, money which could be better spent on services which benefit the community as a whole.” If you have any information that could lead to identifying fly tippers, please contact the council on 01276 707100 or visit www.surreyheath.gov.uk/flytipping

With a scheduled opening date of the 31st October, Frimley Green residents have everything to be excited about as the cup of Joe’s get ready to flow. For more information on The Nook, visit their Facebook page facebook.com/frimleygreencoffeeshop

TALKING TO… STEVE BACKSHALL One of Britain’s most popular naturalists, Steve Backshall comes to Guildford in October to talk about his experiences. Here we talk to Steve about growing up in Surrey, deadly animals and being dragged off by a blissfully ignorant shark… PHOTO CREDIT: ADAM WHITE

12

You’re coming to G Live on 30th October with ‘The Wild World Show’ – did you visit Guildford often growing up? Any fond memories?

Your novels ‘The Falcon Chronicles’ are inspired by your own real life experiences, which forms the basis of your show. How easily does the writing process come?

I did actually yeah – I used to go swimming at the Lido with friends, and cycling over the Hog’s Back a lot when I was younger. I even went to my very first nightclub in Guildford when I was in my teens… *after gentle nudging* I seem to remember it being called Cinderella’s? Does that ring any bells? (Ed. Readers of a certain age will certainly remember the glorious venue that was Cinderella’s…)

It depends – I do all my writing on the road, filming programmes. It can be very hard when you’re sat in the back of a car driving across Uganda or on a boat travelling to Antarctica, and trying to write. If it works, it’s great because it feels like you’re almost recording a film in your head.

You actually grew up in Bagshot, so this is something of a home-coming – but I understand your household wasn’t so typical and helped shape your love of animals? It certainly could not have been any less typical! I grew up on a smallholding, not far from where Pennyhill Park is now. My parents, despite having no experience in the field, got a whole bunch of rescue animals from goats to chickens and ducks to an asthmatic donkey and peacocks. We spent our childhood surrounding by these animals and the wildlife of the Surrey heaths.

If it’s not going well, it’s disastrous and there’s really nothing you can do, so it’s a very mixed experience. It’s easy in non-fiction work there’s no need for an enormous amount of creativity; fiction is different in that you have to be in the right frame of mind.

The Deadly 60 is a programme for young people in which you trekked across the globe to find the 60 “most deadly” animals in the world. Which was your favourite creature to source, either due to the animal itself or the location? I think it would probably be one of the very last ones we did which was filming leopard seals underneath the ice in

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

Antarctica. Firstly because I’d always wanted to go to there, and secondly because you’ve got this extraordinary animal, a huge predatory seal that could literally shake a penguin out of its skin, darting around, flashing her teeth at you underneath a jade green iceberg. It was one of the most surreal and extraordinarily powerful experiences I’ve ever had.

Did you ever feel in any real danger while filming the show?

Indeed you have said that “the more you learn about animals, the more convinced you are that almost all the fears we have about them are unfounded”. But do you have any animal phobias, however irrational? No. I think I’ve beaten all of those and I think a lot of that is down purely to experience; it’s really seeing that if you get into the water with what appears to be a shark feeding frenzy is actually extremely targeted on food and they will completely ignore you. I’ve been in the water with great white sharks and had them swim around me to get to food, deliberately – I’ve found that with almost every single animal I’ve worked with. I did have an intriguing moment hand-feeding sharks in the Bahamas – one took not just the fish but my hand itself and swam away with me! That was an experience. I was wearing chainmail underneath my wetsuit so I was fine, but it made for a great shot on the camera…

Finally as it’s Guildford Book Festival this month, what is your favourite book/ who is your favourite author? My favourite book is the Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace, a contemporary of Darwin’s. It’s an extraordinary adventure yarn set in a part of the world that I now know very well, written back in a time when he was genuinely at risk of being eaten. In terms of author – can I say me…?!

Steve Backshall will be at Guildford’s G Live on the 30th October and embarking on his nationwide ‘Wild World’ theatre tour from 15 October – 15 November, where his books ‘The Falcon Chronicles’ and ‘Mountain’ will be available to buy. To book tickets please visit stevebackshall.com/tour.

There were certain moments where we felt we’d been lucky to come away unscathed, but far fewer than people would expect – the real lesson for me is that wild animals pose us so little threat and in most situations would far rather get away from us than attack us. So over the course of filming with pretty much every animal that people are frightened of around the world, there’s been remarkably little danger.

Freaky Fancy Dress No Halloween party is complete without the obligatory sight of a dozen Dracula’s, blood laden nurses gowns and wicked witches. To don yourself from head to toe in the most gruesome of guises make your way to your nearest fancy dress shop. Be sure to enquire early otherwise you’ll be left to your own devices and end up at the party as a poor man’s Pumpkin head. STUCK FOR IDEAS? TOP TIP: If you can handle your face feeling a little funny for the night, make a thick mixture of water, flour and bits of biscuit then plaster it over your face to create a mummified zombie look (a beauty facemask left to dry would work to!).

OCTOBER 2015

THE BIG BANG - NIGHTS Halloween and Bonfire Night – how’d this happen? It feels like we’ve only just finished munching on Easter eggs. Anyway, as October morphs into November we see the inevitable return of the multi-coloured whizz-bangs we all know and love. But where can we bear witness to these colourful displays, complete with bonfire and possibly a sparkler and a toffee apple? Here are a few of our recommendations across the local area…

Yateley Fireworks Fiesta 7th November / Westfields Junior School TBC What to expect:

Windlesham Fireworks 6th November / Field of Remembrance, Windlesham What to expect: One heck of a party in this lovely village is what you can expect! Windlesham Fireworks will be selling gourmet sausages and burgers from the BBQ (sponsored by ever-brilliant local pub number 1 The Brickmakers), mulled wine, beer and soft drinks (sponsored by ever-brilliant local pub number 2, The Half Moon) as well as a fabulous selection of glow-in-the-dark accessories. As if this wasn’t enough, proceeds are in aid of The Windlesham Field of Remembrance and Windlesham Village Infant School. Aw.

Find out more about the event at windleshamfireworks.co.uk

Once again Yateley & District Lions Club will light up the skies of this lovey Surrey/Hants border village with yet another magnificent Yateley Fireworks Fiesta. There is normally a very good show and these good charitable folk are kindly supported by the local community. As this is another Lions-hosted event, proceeds do of course go to a good cause - all the money raised goes towards helping Westfields Junior School and other Yateley Lions charities. Which is just lovely…

Find out more about Yateley’s Fireworks Fiesta at yateleylions.co.uk/fireworks

Rushmoor Fireworks Spectacular 7th November / Manor Park, Aldershot What to expect:

Fleet Fireworks Fiesta 7th November / Calthorpe Park What to expect: A brilliantly vibrant affair courtesy of the Fleet Lions. There will be a wide variety of food outlets, including fish and chips, the Lions’ barbecue, mulled wine, candy floss, teas and coffees and a soup kitchen provided by the Scouts. Gates open at 5pm with the show set to start around 6:30pm, when the sky will be lit-up with an exciting £5,000 display! If you are able to get to the lovely North Hampshire town, be sure to show your face, for this will be a marvellous event…

Find out more by visiting fleetlions.org.uk

You can expect rather a lot, reader. The sky will be full of colour and sparkle this November at the Rushmoor Fireworks Spectacular in Aldershot’s Manor Park. The fireworks display is one of the biggest and best events in Hampshire, attracting between 7,000 and 10,000 people every year. As well as the firework displays, there will also be a variety of live music and stage entertainment, funfair rides, sideshows, stalls and attractions for all ages. Naturally hot food and drinks will also be available from a variety of food vans. A special ten-minute fireworks display will be held at 6.45pm for children aged under five - it will include all the sparkle but without the loud bangs. The main 20-minute spectacular will then begin at 8pm. And breathe…

Find out more about this fantastic fireworks event at rushmoor.gov.uk/fireworks

Mytchett Fireworks Bonanza 1st November / Mytchett Community Centre

Farnham Fireworks Fiesta

What to expect:

7th November TBC / Farnham Centre

Funfairs, fireworks and fun – the big three criteria for a fireworks display. Mytchett Community Centre, located just outside of Camberley, is a haven for local events (think cider festivals and wedding fayres) and this is an event for all the family to enjoy. One very much for those who want to enjoy the whizz-bangs in a communityfocussed, kid-friendly environment.

Keep yourself updated with the event at themytchettcentre.co.uk

Details are still sparse as this scribe furiously types, but you can expect this fabulous fireworks extravaganza to take place across Farnham on the 7th November. The Firework Fiesta, organised by Farnham’s Round Table, is a marvellous annual event for all the family. With a torchlit procession leaving the town centre for Farnham Park and an amazing firework display, all proceeds go to charity, so you can do you bit just by attending and bringing a couple of nuggets. Do it for Farnham!

TO LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE!

Halloween Raceday and Fireworks Spectacular 31st October / Ascot Racecourse What to expect: Well, if you’re going to go to Ascot racecourse to get your fix of colourful explosives, chances are you’re going to expect it to go off with – and you’ll excuse the pub – one heck of a bang. So how about not only celebrating the day but also Halloween AND seeing some gee gees too? Gather friends and family to enjoy Ascot’s first meeting of the 2015/16 Jumps season, featuring the £100,000 Gold Cup Chase over three miles. Racing is followed by one of the region’s largest Fireworks Spectaculars and being Halloween be prepared for a few surprises too! The Plaza Lawns will come alive throughout the afternoon with free fairground rides until 4pm, £1 per ride thereafter. All proceeds go to local charities. The day is a designated family day and entry is free for children under 18. So in short – this is truly an event rather than just a fireworks display…

RECIPES

Winter Rib Ragu & Mustard Mash By Fiona Knowlton It is the season of slow cooking and winter comfort food. This is one of those great meals that you can put on the hob and leave for a few hours without having to do anything. It’s also a great excuse to visit your local butcher as it’s the best place to buy your ribs from.

Ingredients 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

1 rack of pork ribs (ask your butcher to cut them into pieces) 3 tbsp. olive oil 4 carrots, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1 pint of stock (ideally a mix of beef and vegetable) 1 bag of good British mashing potatoes 2 tsp of mustard of your choice, but whole grain works really well.

Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Heat the oil in a large heavy based pan. Brown the ribs in the oil and then set aside.

Sauté the onions and carrots for around three minutes then add the ribs back to the pan. Add the stock and a bay leaf and reduce to a simmer. Cover and leave to simmer for two hours. 40 minutes before the end of cooking start your mash potato. Peel your potatoes and boil for between 25 and 40 minutes or until soft. Once drained mash them with a generous amount of butter and the mustard.

6.

When the ribs are done remove from the heat and remove the bones. Shred the meat and mix back into the sauce. Season with pepper if needed and serve.

7.

Voila! A hearty meal that warms the belly and soothes the soul; the perfect plate of food for cold nights.

Woking have made an impressive start to the season and will be hoping to, once again, be challenging for promotion come May. If they’re to be in with a shout, every home game is key. Cheer on Hill’s men and split your week up nicely with some midweek evening football. www.wokingfc.co.uk/fixtures

SPORT

OCTOBER 2015

talking to tayo Surrey Scorchers captain Tayo Ogedengbe has promised exciting and competitive basketball, as well as raising the games profile throughout the county. A new era of the sport is underway in Surrey, and Tayo, who played under Scorchers coach Creon

Raftopolous in the Guildford Heat days, returns to the county he describes as making him the player he is today. “It was an easy decision [to come back to Guildford]. In fact it was a no-brainer. I was at the point in my career where I was looking for a new challenge. “I’ve been in the BBL [British Basketball League] and overseas

By Tayler Willson

a lot, so I was kind of looking for something new and Creon provided me with it. “Guildford helped me base my career, it helped make me the player I am today. I played my third year pro here and I want to give something back. “I love the Guildford area and having played here before in the Guildford Heat days I have a link

to the area as well. So everything kind of made sense to me to come back and try and get basketball back to where it should be in the area.” Tayo admitted it wasn’t just the draw of Guildford that bought him back to where it all started: “Back when it was Heat, the fans were great. It hasn’t been the best here over the last few years, so I want to give something back to them. I want to give them back what they deserve.” Since leaving Heat, Tayo’s experienced basketball all around Europe, as well as representing England at various levels. The 6ft 6” forward said he’d learnt a lot from his Surrey hiatus and hopes he can pass that on to the rest of his squad. “Playing pro I never went to college, I just came straight out of university and turned pro. I never really got the real American college experience like the others, where you get to learn through a system.

“So going abroad really opened up basketball to me and it structured and calmed my game down a little. It really took me and my game to that next level and hopefully I can teach others that too.” As well as securing Tayo’s services, Creon’s brought in experience in Will Neighbour, Jacob Loveridge, Henry Wilkins, Andreas Schreiber, plus last season’s Surrey United Captain Elvisi Dusha – the only remaining player from the former team. Tayo, though, promised fans exciting basketball and was adamant Scorchers weren’t just there to make up the numbers: “We’re set on playing exciting basketball and I know in the past it hasn’t been that. We’ll definitely be competitive and play to a high-standard too. We’re not just putting any old team out there.

“We have GB internationals, NCAA players, Division 1 players etc. We’re not to be underestimated. “I’m not going to sugar-coat it, I want to make the play-offs. But I also understand it’s a building process, but that doesn’t take away the fact I want to win. The team has a winning mentality and that’s what the fans can expect week-in-weekout. “We’ve got a motto in the team that’s ‘No Excuses’, because we can make a lot of excuses. Like, we’re a new team, we haven’t got our players in, we haven’t practiced much – but there are no excuses, that’s it. That’s what we’re flowing with. “We want to be as successful as we can, I want some silverware and I want to bring it back Guildford.”

England Netball World Cup Review England left this summer’s Netball World Cup with a bronze medal, courtesy of a third-place play-off victory over Jamaica. Storm trio Tamsin Greenway, Rachel Dunn and Pamela Cookey were all part of the 20-woman squad that made the journey, with all three playing significant parts in the team’s success. England eventually fell victims to eventual runners-up New Zealand in the semi-final, who went on to lose narrowly to Australia 58-55 in the final, handing the Aussies their second World Cup title on the bounce.

Surrey Smashers Season Preview Smashers will be hoping to improve on their disappointing final defeat, by going all the way this campaign and being crowned champions. There have been wholesale changes this summer break, with Matt Nottingham, Soraya de Visch Eijbergen, Eefje Muskens and Joel Gayle all departing Surrey Sports Park. However, Robert Blair – three-time commonwealth medallist – will join up with Smashers, as will world number 82 Sophie Brown. The Smashers have only two home games this season, so tickets will go fast. Visit: www.surreysmashers.co.uk for more information.

BUSINESS AND SOCIAL MEDIA: An Essential Tool for Business

The Buzz Video is most definitely the hot topic in social media at the moment. •

Facebook video overtaking YouTube in terms of monthly views

Where to begin?

Meerkat and Periscope igniting the trend of “live-streaming”

Firstly you will need to have a grasp on your target audience; their age and gender play a vital role in choosing which social media channels will work best for your company. For example, 51.3% of Facebook users are female, and 25.5% of all users are aged between 25 – 34 years old. While there is no firm evidence, it is thought that Twitter sways more heavily towards a male audience. Another consideration is if you’re targeting B2C or B2B as your audience, as it is more likely you will capture consumers with Facebook and businesses with Twitter.

Videos on Facebook getting the most reach out of any post type

Facebook pages adding video tab to insights

Video ads now available on most platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat...

Google+ separating out from YouTube so people without an account can comment on videos

Why use it? The primary goals for social media should be to increase company and brand awareness, driving traffic to your website and to help engage with potential leads. Having an active social media presence can also help boost your SEO rankings too, as the more mentions there are of your company, the further up your company will appear in search engines. What to post? Aim to treat your social media channels as an extension of your company website. It should be a good mix of company news, what you offer and your expertise, plus relevant insights into the wider industry you represent. Your content should be professional while bringing a healthy dose of personality, engaging, and employ a consistent tone of voice. How to measure success? This will really depend on what attainable targets you set yourself, and understanding what social media adds to your marketing mix is crucial. If you are a brand or designer with visuals at the forefront of your company, then engagement through “likes” is a good way to measure performance. If you set out to educate clients and/or the public about your services, then perhaps clickthrough rate to your website is where you should measure. For more information and updates visit marketingmagpie.co.uk

Overall video costs are coming down due to the tools people can use moving towards the ad hoc away from the professional. This means it’s possible for small businesses with a very low budget to have a video strategy - all you need is a smartphone. For small businesses, the key is to be authentic, approachable and to add some value. Whether you want to do a 60 second industry tip on Periscope twice a week, or record a walkthrough of your venue and include some friendly facts and info. Just be creative and friendly. Don’t be too stiff, too rehearsed/scripted or too standoffish.

In other news: • Google+ is being further separated out from other Google services, e.g. YouTube, meaning less and less people will be on the platform. It’s still useful from an SEO point of view although less so from a social media one. • Various platforms are cracking down on harassment and trolling. • Facebook is trying to make it easier for users to see the content they want and control what other people see of their content.
