DECEMBER 2015
As December is the month of Christmas, we thought it best to highlight to you, our most esteemed readers, that there is an awful lot of charitable goodwill at this time of year. Hopefully it’s gotten to you too… So if you find yourself with a bit of spare time, a few quid and/or a whole heap of good cheer, then perhaps you’d like to impart some of the above to a charitable cause. And particularly at this time of year, they need it; for example, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice needs around £40,000 in donations just to function over Christmas Day and Boxing Day. All of the activities below are for worthy recipients, and of course these are merely scratching the surface of what you can do. Some require a bit of physical output, some just a tiny sliver of your time but wither way you’ll be doing your bit – and that’s a ruddy great Christmas present for someone...
COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS
Bisley, Camberley and Petersfield | Christmas Day
V-------------q
Community Christmas is an organisation dedicated to providing companionship to as many of the elderly in our communities as possible so that no one is alone on Christmas Day who does not want to be. Using your December 25th to help others is an extremely altruistic move, so massive kudos should you get involved. Community Christmas events are held in local halls, run by local volunteers and largely funded by local businesses and donors. In Surrey and Hampshire, Bisley Village Hall, Collingwood Grange in Camberley and the Community Centre in Petersfield are all involved for 2015, so if you’re available and in the area then be sure to help out! You can find out more about this wonderful organisation, and these local versions, at communitychristmas.org.uk
The Children’s Trust Festive Fridays
q ---------V-
04
11th to 25th December
The Tadworth-based Children’s Trust are a superb organisation; indeed they are the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury. And they have a very simple idea to raise funds this Christmas – and everyone can take part… Festive Friday is our new national event that simply involves wearing something festive to nursery, school, college, university or work. This can be from wearing a festive jumper to a Santa’s hat or a pair of Christmas earrings for a voluntary donation on Friday 11th December 2015. But if your organisation cannot do this date choose any Friday best for you in the lead up to Christmas. So dig out those festive jumpers, Santa hats, Christmas tree earrings, Reindeer ears, tinsel - anything festive you find to wear! Register your company and find out more at thechildrenstrust.org.uk

Read on, generous consumers of The Guide 2 Surrey magazine, and Merry Christmas! PRAM RACE
Windlesham | Boxing Day Numerous charities benefit from this annual extravaganza, which has become a legendary event in this neck of the woods. Lovely Windlesham becomes a riotously fun place on Boxing Day, and 2015 promises to be exactly the ruddy same…
---q ---V
The deal is this; you dress up in ludicrously fancy dress, and then complete a 3.5 mile course through Windlesham village, stopping at local pubs along the way. In 2014 the Windlesham Pram Race raised just short of £11,000 for local charities, and this year’s race aims to go even higher. It really is gonna be fuuuuuuuuun… Entry for the over 18s and over is £8 per racer, and for Under 18 it’s £5 per racer. Find out more at pramrace.com
BRUTAL 10 V----Longmoor, Liss | 28th December -------q
Don’t indulge in the turkey too much this Christmas if you’ve got this lined up. This is one tough run on land the army use 4×4 vehicles to traverse - you’ll have your legs… Anyway we highly recommend getting a sponsorship and raising money for whatever charity you see fit. And here’s what’s in store for you: A well-established race, one of two laps of this 8k course takes you into the sand dunes, with an abundance of hill climbs later. There are water features to cool runners off before subsequent climbs where the course twists and turns before heading back into the arena for the finish or second lap. All in all a true Brutal race to finish the year providing excellent viewing areas for the family and friends very close to the arena.
---q ------V--
SANTA AND RUDOLPH FUN RUN
Entry is between £15 and £24 and you must be over 13 to enter. Get yourself a sponsorship form, resist that forth spoonful of bread sauce on Christmas Day, be first and foremost visit brutalrun.co.uk
Queens Avenue Playing Fields, Aldershot | 13th December For the splendid Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice – TG2Surrey’s charity of the year in 2014 – there is a fun run in this lovely expanse of green land. The Farnham-based hospice needs constant funds to keep running, and they sure do deserve it. So with that in mind, let’s raise them some money. But the big question is; do you go as Santa or as Rudolph? Alas, reader, we cannot tell you – you shall have to decide for yourself… Entry is £14, or £7 for the under 14s. Find out more at pth.org.uk

NEW YEAR’S EVE:
WE
Moo Moo Club Room,
New Year’s Eve? More like: New Year’s Peeve. Look, it’s the last night of the year. A night that promises so much – so many laughs and banters - but delivers only tears and, usually, a big break-up with that couple who have been in a long-term relationship and seem to split and get back together every other week. But it’s okay, we’re used to these New Year’s antics now, we’ve had a few. But this year’s gonna different, right? A belter, right? A real kneesup to send you into a brand new year, yeah? Good. Well, here at TG Towers, we’ve carefully-crafted a list of events, parties and go-to places to consider when attempting to fulfil the aforementioned. Choose wisely, Surreytonians:
Fleet, GU51 3PE www.moomoofleet.com Fleet’s new Moo Moo Club’s hosting a good old fashioned, fancy dress night to see you dance your way into 2016. The Turkey Ingredients
1 x 12-14 lb (5.5-6.5 kg ) turkey 10-12 rashers streaky bacon
The Gravy
400g softened butter Salt and pepper
Method
•
•
•
Pre-heat the oven to 425°F/220°C/Gas 7. Stuff the turkey cavity with the sage and onion stuffing, saving about two-thirds to stuff the neck end between the flesh and the skin, securing with the neck flap under the bird’s back and a skewer. Rub the softened butter all over the bird and then lay the streaky bacon rashers over the breast, overlapping slightly, then season with black pepper and salt.
•
•
Place the turkey on the ‘trivet’ of vegetables (see Gravy below) in the roasting tray. Cover the turkey loosely with foil.
Ingredients
e k a c e s e e h C t u n t Ches
For a 12-14 lb (5.5-6.5 kg) turkey: Cook for 40 minutes then reduce the temperature to gas mark 3, 325°F (170°C) and cook for a further 3-3½ hours. Baste the turkey every 30-40 minutes. Cook for a final 30 minutes (uncovered) at gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C).
1 stalk celery, cut into chunks A few Rosemary sprigs 1 Tbsp flour 1 litre chicken stock Salt and Pepper
Method
• • • •
Remove Turkey from roasting tray to rest for 30 minutes. Tilt the tray at an angle and remove 90 per cent of the hot fat from the tray. Put the tray back on the hob over a high heat.
p o h s i B •g n i k o m S • The
To test if the turkey is at the right temperature, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the bird – without touching bone. For a 12-14 Ib bird, it should read 155f/68c.
Add the flour, stir it around and, holding the tray steady with a tea towel or oven glove, use a potato masher to mash all the veg to a pulp. Add the stock – a little at first, then the rest. Bring to a boil, scraping the tray as you go, then simmer for 10 minutes.
• •
Sage and Onion Stuffing Ingredients
4 large red onions, cut into large wedges 1 Garlic bulb cut in two 2 carrots, cut into large chunks (or carrot trimmings)
Pour your gravy through a sieve, using a ladle to squeeze all the flavours through. Discard what’s left behind in the sieve. Pour into a jug to serve or simmer in a pan to thicken more.
s p i T ie d o o F
80g/3oz fresh white breadcrumbs salt and pepper 1 egg, beaten
1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp fresh sage, finely chopped
Method
• • •
Sweat the onion in the oil, until soft but not coloured Mix together the onion, sage and breadcrumbs and season well. Add enough beaten egg to bind the mixture together and use to stuff the turkey
Roast Potatoes Ingredients
Pigs in honey blankets
Roast Potatoes 1kg/2½lb floury potatoes.
Ingredients
Method
16 rashers of streaky bacon 32 cocktail sausages
3-4 tbsp honey Salt and freshly ground pepper
Method
•
•
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. Using the back of a knife, stretch each bacon rasher out to stop them shrinking as they cook. Cut each rasher in half and roll a piece around each sausage. Put the sausages in a roasting tin lined with foil. Drizzle honey over the sausages and season. Toss everything together. Bake for 35 minutes. Shake them now and again, and baste. They should be dark brown and shiny.

Maris Piper make for the best roast potatoes. olive oil or goose fat
Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. Peel the potatoes and cut into large chunks. Parboil in boiling salted water for 5 minutes. Drain and toss in the pan to roughen the edges. Put your fat or oil of choice into your roasting pan until it is about 1/2 an inch deep, then place in the oven until it is smoking. Carefully take the tin out of the oven and add the potatoes to the hot fat, basting them as you do so. Put the tin back in the oven and cook for about 1 hour until the roast potatoes are golden and crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Turn them over from time to time whilst they are cooking to colour on all sides.

•
Place the sprouts into a saucepan of simmering salted water and cook for 4-5 minutes, until almost, but not quite, cooked. Drain thoroughly, allow to cool slightly and cut in half.
•
Place the butter and oil into a wide frying pan over a medium heat. Add the bacon and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until lightly browned. Add the sprouts and sauté for a further 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the cream and bring the mixture to the boil. Boil for 2-4 minutes, until the cream has reduced to a rich sauce. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
• • •
Remove from the heat, add the lemon juice and spoon into an ovenproof gratin dish. Mix the breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese together in a bowl, then sprinkle evenly over the top of the sprout mixture. Place into the oven and bake for 18-20 minutes, until the top is golden-brown and the cream is boiling. Remove from the oven and serve in the gratin dish (when the dish has cooled slightly). Can be made the day before and reheated in the oven for 15 minutes when you take the turkey out to rest

“Smoking Bishop?” I hear you say. No it’s not the latest reform from the Church of England, but instead a drink popularised by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and first mentioned in English literature in Jonathan Swift’s verse Oranges from the late 1600’s. Alas the foundations (as we know it in this Fair Isle) of mulled wine were laid - and a particularly potent variant at that. The name is said to be taken from the resemblance of a steaming goblet of wine and a robed bishop, um, smoking. Of course, mulled wine is not indigenous to Britain. In fact, if you were to scour the globe for similar, you would undoubtedly find at least one version of said drink from most regions, let alone countries. Glühwhein is popular amongst German speaking countries, Nordics may be familiar with Gløgg, and Brazilians may be partial to a glass of vinho quente; so it can be said that as human beings, we appreciate the combined taste of warm red wine, spices and citrus fruit.
The Smoking Bishop
So here’s to the global appreciation of spiced wine in the winter months! Ideal for warming one’s cockles as the cold nights draw in, here’s a mulling recipe from us to you. Merry Christmas!
Recipe: Ingredients… • • •
4 Large Oranges 3 Lemons Brown (Demerara sugar) – 2 tbsp (sweeten to taste)
• • • • • •
Star of Anise Cloves Cinnamon Sticks 1 Bottle of red wine 35cl Brandy Cup of orange juice
Method: The night before…
The day after the night before… 1.
Remove oranges and lemons and cut in half
1.
Roast oranges and lemons in a shallow baking tray at 120c for 1 1/2 hours or until golden brown
2.
With the back of a spoon or your hand press as much juice out of the fruit as possible into the wine
2.
Place oranges and lemons into a bowl and pour any leaked juices from the fruit into the bowl as well
3.
Sieve mixture (to get rid of any unwanted pulp/cloves) into a saucepan and add your cinnamon sticks
3.
Liberally prick fruit with cloves
4.
Add juice and sugar to taste
4.
Add sugar and 2 stars of anise
5.
Bring to high simmer for five minutes
5.
Pour wine over fruit
6.
6.
Cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for 12 – 24 hours
Add Brandy and simmer on a low heat for 20 minutes (we don’t want it to lose its potency)
7.
Serve with an orange/lemon wedge and cinnamon stick

By Rich Lee
It is, in short, as fine a place for a meal as any, and with two AA rosettes hung proudly about the place a fine meal is exactly what you expect. Happily, that’s exactly what arrived, beginning with an achingly attractive starter of smoked haddock brandade, Head Chef Michael Ball’s primped version of a rustic classic from the South of France; a kind of whip-smooth kedgeree of delicately fragrant fish teased through silky potato. Ethereally crisp shards of pancetta brought a salty kick and a soft egg cooked somewhere between poached and confit oozed yolk over a chlorophyll green herb puree that hummed brightly with dill.

Upon arriving at this reassuringly busy restaurant in early November, where several large groups of people were clustered about the room absorbed in happy banter while destroying some teasingly attractive food, I mused, somewhat stupidly, to restaurant manager Didier, “What, Christmas parties already?”
shop i B g in k o m S
He just blinked, gave me a polite “Non,” and carried on being the smooth, friendly host while I quietly chided myself for falling prey to the fallacy that hotel restaurants mostly cater to ‘groups and events.’ Of course not. Why can’t they just pull in diners seeking a great meal too? Quel idiot. [italicise?]

Regardless, as a dining space the Linden Restaurant offers little in the way of frills, but achieves a soothingly soporific, soft-lit sereneness thanks to a gentle balance of satin grey walls, velvet coverings and dark chocolate leather. Banquettes bring a touch of bistro to the room, while framed cracked marbles lure a curious eye over simple and elegantly laid tables, attended to by Didier and his equally charming team.
Signs, so far, were very good, but the real dazzle appeared with a mains of featherblade of Scottish Beef, coated in a mirror sheen demi-glace glaze pooling around meat which had been slow-cooked to gutsy, brash perfection, begging to be pulled apart in a tender tangle of fibrous joy. We found layers of esoteric flavours and textures among the beef’s supporting cast: truffle-jacked buttery polenta, the salty tickle of wild cepe, the crunch of crispy salsify and beetroot and a cauliflower puree made rich and sexy being just a few of the surprises found in this one dish alone. Across from this and another pork dish (hey, if something’s good) brought a colourful slate whose pebbly mounds boasted boulders of soft braised cheek and pucks of juicy tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto, tumbled amongst glossy

dabs of carrot puree and sweet poached apples. By themselves delicious, but sultry notes of aniseed, cardamom and cassis lifted everything even further, as did a smoked mash that was close to revelatory. A dark chocolate fondant felt like a safe crowd pleaser after such bounty, but then who would begrudge a dessert that spills rich molten chocolate lava from its cocoa depths? A torn lemon sponge, however, the rough hunks of cake strewn with blackberries, a dusting of pistachio and a quenelle of the cleanest, sweet-mellow pear sorbet was a light and fuzzy nostalgic hug on a stormy autumn evening. Yes prices creep towards the steep side of a menu, especially when you throw in with the excellent wine list, but in this case the superb dishes warrant it. And now that it doesn’t need saying anymore, you don’t require a posse or special occasion to enjoy what’s on offer at this rather special restaurant.

Everyone obsesses over mulled wine at Christmas, however my preferred drink has always been a gin and tonic over a glass of wine. Christmas for me equals mulled gin especially. It includes all the sweetness and spice of cinnamon and allspice with a touch of orange juice and a lot of gin. It’s the better alternative to old school mulled wine. If you’re in charge for cooking Christmas dinner, have a few (and only a few) of these to knock the stress off before you start!

at Silent Pool Distillers, Albury I’ve always found the Holidays to be festive time, a time to gather friends and family to celebrate the things that matter most; booze, pudding, and fire! And this year I’ve managed to combine all three. At Silent Pool Distillery we’ve distilled a Plum Eau De Vie, which at 50% alcohol, will set even the densest Christmas Pudding ablaze!

co-owner of Giggling Squid Thai Restaurants in Guildford and Epsom This is my special alternative roasted chicken recipe, which is a bit hit with my Anglo-Thai family. It works even better with turkey, which can be a little dry and lacking in flavour. Just increase the quantities 3 or 4 fold, depending on the size of your bird. My kids always fight over the crispy skin and they would wipe the baking tray clean if I let them!

We’re proud to help our customers put Christmas on the table every year, but for a truly traditional take you can’t beat a Christmas Goose. We source our renowned free range bronze turkeys and free range geese from Goodman’s in Worcestershire where they’re fed on all natural foods - grass, corn, straw - for the best flavour. But goose isn’t just delicious by itself - you also get the fat for making the best roast potatoes!

It’s so easy to make too! Add a measure of Winter Pimm’s, brandy, crushed ice, a cinnamon stick and apple juice to a cocktail shaker, give it a good shake and serve with sliced apple and orange.

2 shallots 2 sticks of sliced lemongrass 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp vegetable oil In a blender, or even better in mortar and pestle, mix the shallots and lemongrass with some light soy sauce (I don’t use dark soy as it doesn’t have much flavour - it’s just for adding colour), veg or olive oil and ground black pepper. Rub the mixture all over the chicken. Marinate at least 1 hour. Roast as normal!

Christmas in Farnham There is no need to go any further than Farnham for your Christmas shopping this year. With over 200 shops, many of which are independent retailers, you can find that perfect gift for the family. Retailers have decided to stay open for late night shopping on Thursday 3rd, 10th and 17th December. Moreover, Waverley’s pay and display car parks will also be offering free parking between 3pm and 7pm on these dates. Children aged between 5 and 11 are invited to take part in the return of the popular Christmas themed window trail competition. This year’s competition will be officially launched at the Farnham Christmas Market, which takes place on Sunday 13th December. You will be able to pick up an entry form featuring all the shops taking part. The theme for this year’s competition is… *drum roll*… penguins! Find as many penguin’s hidden in participating shop windows for a chance to win a prize! Entry forms will also be available from Farnham Town Council offices in South Street or can be downloaded from farnham.gov.uk. Also on Sunday 13th December between 10am and 4pm, Farnham Town Council will host a Christmas Market in Castle Street and the Mercure Bush Hotel. Castle Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a bustling, jolly, festive market with around one hundred stalls, music and entertainment. There will be warming food and drink on offer including German sausages and mulled cider, plenty of festive gifts, treats and decorations.
More stalls will be located in the Bush hotel courtyard, gardens and conference suite plus there will be a live Nativity in the Bush Hotel courtyard and a chance to order your Christmas tree straight to your door! Oh and don’t forget to visit Father Christmas in his grotto in the Bush Hotel conference suite! The Christmas Farmers’ Market will also be taking place in central car park, perfect to pick up fresh and local produce for your Christmas Day Lunch; all products at the Farmers’ Market are sourced from within a 50 mile radius. Farmers’ Markets enable the producers and growers to sell their products direct to the customer, which means fewer food miles are travelled. You can expect to find some delectable local cheeses, fresh meats and Christmas wreaths. The Farmers’ market will be open from 10am to 3.30pm. Finally be sure to come along to Gostrey Meadow on Sunday 20th December to join in singing carols around the Christmas tree with Farnham Brass band. The carol singing will take place from 2.30pm – 3.30pm and is a celebration of Farnham in Blooms’ golden success. Mulled wine and mince pies will be available. Visit farnham.gov.uk/Christmas or pick up a what’s on guide from Farnham Town Council for more about what is happening in Farnham this Christmas.

WINTER JETSETTING
Now, who would not like to get a gift like this – a little wee trip away in these winter months? Perhaps you’d like to visit a European Christmas market? Or how about just getting away from the bare trees and the biting winds to find some winter sun? Either way it’s a winner – so be sure to consider the following as a gift to a loved one, or indeed yourself…
WINTER SUN Should you really wish to push the boat out, the Caribbean Islands are always popular in the winter months for beach and relaxation with December to February being their peak season. After Easter, prices will fall offering better value for money and there are Islands to suit all budgets. Grenada, Jamaica, Cuba are more affordable for those who want an exotic holiday without maxing out the credit card. Goa is a great choice for the winter months with good temperatures and dry weather. It also offers a mixture of great beaches, culture and scenery. The Indian Visa has become cheaper and easier to obtain which helps to attract more visitors, so previous issues with visiting needn’t worry the adventurous winter sun-seeker. Closer to home, the Canary Islands are always popular for families and couples alike being the closest destination for decent temperatures at that time of year.
A WEEKEND AWAY City breaks are great for any-time of year but for the winter Rekjavik has been very popular recently with interesting winter excursions and
the Northern Lights. New York and Las Vegas are always popular, Dubai can be done as a short break with high quality hotels and guaranteed winter-sun along with all of the other attractions (ski slopes, penguins, jeep safaris to name but a few. Barcelona is a great short break with its Gaudi architecture, Gothic quarter, lively Las Ramblas and marina. These top travelling tips come courtesy of Camberley Travel. THE PREGNANCY MASSAGE
In the third trimester of my third pregnancy, when the opportunity arose to visit the Beauty Rooms in Camberley and trial their Pregnancy Massage I couldn’t have been happier.
By Helen Askew
I
had previously enjoyed a pregnancy massage during my second pregnancy. However, now 32 weeks into my third, that seemed like a distant memory and I was only too happy to be a willing volunteer on this occasion! Prior to visiting the Beauty Rooms I had a quick look online to see what people had to say about Pregnancy Massage – what benefits were attached to the practice and what could I expect on the day. From my basic research, it became abundantly clear that the benefits list was endless. Evidence abounds that pregnancy massage can help with a whole host of ailments – from stress and anxiety to insomnia and from hip and back pain to low energy levels during pregnancy. At a time when your body is rapidly changing, many also believe that pregnancy massage can offer emotional support. Armed with this knowledge – and feeling somewhat sleepy – I headed to The Beauty Rooms. On arriving at the salon, I was immediately struck by the calm and relaxed atmosphere. The salon is very modern and the reception area is light and welcoming. I was greeted by the salons owner Rebecca and introduced to my therapist, Sian. Sian immediately took my through to the therapy room which, by comparison, had a very cosy, calm and snug feel to it. The lighting was low and I felt immediately relaxed. Sian then ran through the format of the massage, any concerns I may have or issues within my pregnancy that
she should be aware of. Throughout the massage you lie either on your side or up right, with plenty of pillows for support. Sian had confirmed that the treatment would be a full body massage – using safe pre-natal techniques – followed by a head and scalp massage. Focusing on the spine, legs, arms and hands, the massage really did relax any overworked muscles and I found that aches and tensions present at the start of the treatment simply melted away. Towards the end of the massage there was a very real risk that I could have fallen asleep! Sian was brilliant, only talking about the treatment when necessary and creating an atmosphere of total relaxation. By the end of the hour I really did feel revitalised and cannot recommend this treatment highly enough. During pregnancy it is incredibly easy to simply assign aches and pains to the joys of pregnancy, when in reality a treatment such as this can address so many of these issues. So if you, like me, enter these festive months with a little human being inside you, then add this to your list to Santa as the ultimate gift for you and your body; we’re sure the big man in red will oblige.

SPORT
DECEMBER 2015
By: Tayler Willson
TEST DUMMY: Team Sport Adrenaline and speed are two things I tend to avoid. It’s not that I’m massively mundane and miserable, it’s that I’m close to tears whenever I’m in touching distance of danger. I don’t drive and I’m not even positive I ever will. I walk, usually, and even then I always have one eye fixated on those four-wheeled beasts.
In light of the above and my obvious passion for racing, I headed down to Farnborough to give their brand new Team Sport electric go-karting complex the once over and hopefully leave with my dignity in-tact. Team Sport’s the largest go-karting company in the United Kingdom with over twenty complexes dotted generously around the country. However, since Camberley said a sad farewell to their site some years ago, a Team Sport complex was what our parts desperately lacked. Upon arrival I put pen to paper agreeing to carry the full responsibility of whatever chaos I may find myself in over the next hour. After squeezing into a driver’s get-up we had our pre-race briefing – a briefing that put me at ease should my fellow racers abide. I was handed a helmet, allocated a car and duly squeezed my bum into a questionably-sized seat. These hips don’t lie.
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport
Fiona Digby-Jones, our resident TG photographer who was there to take pictures of me, managed to blag a car too, easily shunning her work responsibilities to one side on her own accord. For me, now, it was about staying safe and, more importantly, beating Fiona. We started with some practice laps to get an understanding of the track and our vehicle. To say I was tense would be an understatement. Teeth gritted and palms wetter than my tears, I slowly began to pick up the pace. Locating Fiona was my first priority, and I did with relative ease. I gave her a wave before flying past and leaving her, probably, stunned. As the first race progressed, so did my confidence. I was zipping through the sharpest corners quicker than you could say Ralph Schumacher. Before I knew it, our first race had been had. We headed over to the scoreboards to see how much faster I was than Fiona. Out of the ten competing, Fiona and I were slumped at the bottom in ninth and tenth, with my fastest lap a good six seconds slower than the ten-year-old’s up front. We both agreed to go hammer and tong on our second outing. Almost immediately I had encountered a pile up caused entirely by Fiona’s said hammer and tong approach when attempting to drift through the circuit’s most unforgiving corner. Unlike regular go karts, Team Sport’s were electric. Aside from the obvious noise difference to that of a petrol go
SPORT
kart, electric cars hit their top speed a lot quicker – one feature one racer couldn’t quite grasp as he continuously crashed into my behind. But wait: was I, Tayler Willson, enjoying the fear, the speed, the adrenaline and the crashing? I think so. Was I, Tayler Willson, teetering on the edge of becoming one of those god-awful adrenaline junkies? I’m afraid I was. But for the first time in my life, I was at one in a vehicle and I was excited. Giddy in fact. Like the first race, and a good wine, I got better with time and by my third and final race I had recorded a personal best, shaving two seconds from my previous best lap time. Fiona, likewise, shredding five seconds from her previous career high. Fun was had by all and I didn’t cry once. I’d put my prejudice of speed and adrenaline to one side and had a belter of an afternoon and I didn’t lose. I’ve not really experienced proper real life adrenaline before, but needing more words for this article I will give it a go: A Storm in a Tea Cup. Me being the tea cup and the go karting the storm. Adrenaline and I are good for now. Maybe I’ll jump out of an aeroplane next month. Then again, maybe not.

CAMBERLEY’S BUSINESSES CELEBRATE SUCCESS AT THE 2015 TOWN CENTRE BUSINESS AWARDS The businesses of Camberley Town Centre were braced with excitement on Wednesday 11th November as they eagerly awaited the results of the 2015 Town Centre Business Awards. Hosted by the towns Business Improvement District (BID) Collectively Camberley, over 100 businesses gathered at the evening event at Camberley Heath Golf Club to celebrate the successes of 2015.
osting the awards evening for the second year and joined by Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Joanne Potter, Collectively Camberley saw record numbers of entries into the public choice awards; with over 1000 members of the public voting for their Best Independent Business and Best Customer Service Experience.
H
Over 70 of the towns businesses took part in a Mystery Shopping project and a further 21 entries were received into the panel awards. This year, businesses had a chance to enter the following; Highest Rated for Mystery Shopping 2015, Professional Service of the Year 2015, Love Camberley Employer of the Year 2015, Best Independent Business 2015 (Consumer Choice), Best Customer Service Experience 2015 (Consumer Choice) and Business of the Year 2015. The judging panel included our very own leader of TG Media Fiona Knowlton, Karen Whelan (Chief Executive of Surrey Heath Borough Council), Louise Punter (Chief Executive of Surrey Chambers of Commerce), Jeff Caplan (Managing Director for Storecheckers Ltd) and coordinated by BID Chairman Lorna Dane. The panel categories included a set of criteria to which each business had to demonstrate why they should win each award. Professional Service of the Year included but not limited to financial, PR, accounting, IT and legal services across the town centre. Entrants to this award were expected to demonstrate high levels of customer satisfaction and business benefits from the users of its products and/or services. The panel were also looking for evidence of sustainable growth combined with a degree of commercial success that is exceptional for the size of the business. The Love Camberley Employer of the Year category derived from the BID’s Industry Insider Scheme.
Launched in May 2014, this employee discount scheme boasts over 2500 local employees of the town who have exclusive access to discounts and deals from Camberley BID Businesses. The panel were looking for the business who best demonstrated how they have created jobs and working environments in which employees can thrive and achieve excellence. The final panel category, Business of the Year was presented by the awards sponsors The Guide 2 Camberley. Here, the panel were looking for the business able to demonstrate high levels of customer service, how they have created an outstanding working environment for employees, evidence of creative and innovative marketing methods as well as demonstrating how their business is currently making a real difference to Camberley Town Centre and the local community.
