L

ocal Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell has -created a Memory Meadow within Guildford’s Stoke Park, a stunning floral tribute to those who are no longer with us, but are never forgotten. The Meadow is situated at the Nightingale Road entrance to the Park, in an area given to the charity by Guildford Borough Council. Its colourful mix of beautiful flowers will bloom every spring, and it is open to anyone wishing to spend some quiet time remembering their loved one. A special remembrance event will be held at Memory Meadow on Saturday 16th April, from 10am to 12pm, which will feature inspiring readings and songs from a local choir, as well as giving those attending the opportunity to walk around the Meadow, taking in the beautiful surroundings. As part of the event, Phyllis Tuckwell is inviting dedications to be featured in a Book of Remembrance, copies of which will be given to all who

attend. To make a dedication in memory of a loved one, please visit pth.org.uk/ memorymeadow or call 01252 729446 by Friday 1st April. Phyllis Tuckwell provides outstanding Hospice Care to those facing a terminal illness, such as cancer, across West Surrey and North East Hampshire. Working from the Beacon Centre in Guildford, the Hospice in Farnham and in patients’ own homes, it provides medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work support and practical advice to over 250 patients, relatives and carers every day, free of charge. However, as NHS/ Government funding only covers 20% of its costs, it needs to raise over £20,000 every day. If you would like to make a donation to help fund their care, please call 01252 729446 or visit pth.org.uk

THE MALL ANNOUNCE CHOSEN CHARITIES

C

hloe’s and Sophie’s Special Ears Fund and British Heart Foundation have been announced as The Mall, Camberley’s chosen charities for 2016.

The Mall taking part in sponsored swims and fundraising events, as well as support from shoppers through the #unselfie campaign and generous donations.

As part of their Mall Cares initiative, Chloe’s and Sophie’s Special Ears Fund are a local charity raising deaf awareness across Hampshire and Surrey. With their very own charity shop in London Road, Just 4 Kids sells a selection of toys, books, clothes and necessities for babies and children, all helping to fund their charity work in the local community.

Glenis Grossmith, Mall Cares leader at The Mall, Camberley, said “We’re thrilled to be supporting two great charities again this year, of which are close to our hearts at The Mall. In 2015 we raised a fantastic amount with help from our supportive shoppers, and we hope to have the same success again this year.”

The Mall will also be supporting British Heart Foundation, after supporting them throughout 2015 through a selection of events including their annual Wear Red day and a gift wrapping stall over the festive season.

The Mall Cares campaign has raised over £300,000 for local charities and causes since it first launched in 2007, including over £50,000 last year throughout a variety of charitable activities in-centre.

In 2015, The Mall, Camberley raised almost £3400 for both British Heart Foundation and Frimley Park Hospital, thanks to staff at

REGISTER TO VOTE TO HAVE YOUR SAY

W

ith local council elections as well as an election for a new Police Crime Commissioner on the horizon come May, it’s important that you get to have your say on the future running of your borough and who runs the Police in your part of the county – therefore it’s really important your register to vote. Sounds like a logical thing to do right? Absolutely! Everyone is responsible for registering themselves rather than the old system of one person from each household registering everyone who lived at their address. By law, if you are eligible, you have to be registered to vote, even if you don’t vote. It’s also important if you ever want credit - even a mobile phone - as credit agencies will check if you’re on the register of electors. To be able to register you must be aged over 16 (although you cannot vote until you are 18) and a British or commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Irish Republic or other EU member state And remember - just because you’re on the council tax register doesn’t mean you are on the electoral register, as the two lists contain different information. Depending on whereabouts you live in Hampshire or Surrey you can find out about registering by going to rushmoor.gov.uk/registertovote if you live in Aldershot or Farnborough or surreyheath.gov.uk if you live in Camberley.

SURREY HILLS

COW PARADE

MARCH 2016

As you know, we at The Guide 2 Surrey love a local charity, and especially a local charity with an original idea. The kind of idea comes around that you just think: “Yes. That” (or similar). And this is one of those times. Cow Parade is the world’s largest public art event – and it’s coming to the Surrey Hills. From May this year, this enormous display of marvellous moos will aim to round up the support of celebrities and community groups, as well as raise money for local community projects and enterprise schemes that benefit and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape.

What is a Cow Parade?

First up, a bit of background about Cow Parade in general is perhaps in order. Originating in Switzerland in 1998, Cow Parade is the world’s largest public art exhibition and is staged in over 80 cities and towns worldwide. In 1999 Chicago hosted the first event with 300 life-sized model cows - there have now been 3000 cows created by more than 5,000 artists. So the idea comes to the Surrey Hills for 2016! The cows are ‘grazed’ in public accessible locations throughout the entire county of Surrey; locations such as roadside fields, high streets, school entrances, businesses, hill tops, vineyards, sporting venues – all over the place! Keep your eyes peeled for these brilliant bovines across our green and pleasant lands…

How to get involved: Whether you want to get involved as a sponsor, you’re an artist who wants to design some cows or you’re a school or charity that wants to get involved, visit cowparadesurreyhills.com

COMMUNITY

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Community

When is it? The public art exhibition will last between May and August, with the auction at the inaugural Surrey Hills Local Food, Drink and Music Festival on 3rd September. October/November 2016 will see the Gala Auction of Championship Cows.

How does it work? Like this: Specific corporates, retailers, hotels, individuals, schools, charities, communities and other organisations across the area will buy a cow for £3500 (mini moos, exclusive to primary schools, will cost £950), which will be designed either by themselves or a chosen artist. Surrey Hills Charity will receive £1000 of this money, meaning continued maintenance of the wooded area we all know and adore. Cows will be transported by the official Cow Parade Moover (hehe) and placed on a concrete plinth for security. Then, the cow is then auctioned off, which will take place at the Surrey Hills Local Food, Drink and Music Festival. Additional funds from the auction will go to the charity of the cow owner’s choosing.

Why do it? The event is for art, for charity and for fun – the three things that The Guide 2 Surrey holds dearly to our hearts. Naturally, the good people who get to see the cows in all their glory will benefit too! The goal is for Cow Parade will attract large numbers of visitors to The Surrey Hills - locally, regionally, nationally and from overseas. This will hopefully have a huge economic impact as evidenced in other Cow Parades across the world.

TALKING TO....

fickle friends Fickle Friends are a self-described Indie Pop group that hail from the iconic beaches of Brighton. We caught up with the lead singer of the five-piece, Natti, to discuss the band’s experiences so far, their (maybe) upcoming album and their current on-tour shenanigans…

By Tayler Willson

Natti – firstly, for those who haven’t heard of Fickle Friends, could you tell us a little about yourselves? Well, we’re a five-piece group that met at Brighton University a few years ago. We were all doing music there but were all in the mind-set of ‘let’s go to university so we can get a loan and do music full-time’ - I think a lot of people do that nowadays anyway. But that’s how we met. None of us really wanted to go to, it was just a way of getting money and being able to do what we loved. After that we won a few competitions as a band in 2013 and it’s grown since then. We’ve done a few festivals and a few big venues.

You mention that you’ve done some ma jor gigs, what’s been your highlight so far? We played this festival in Holland last year called Best Kept Secret and it was absolutely mental. It was really overwhelming, too. We couldn’t believe that people in other countries were listening to our music. We went on a safari after that too. The whole thing was such a weird but wonderful experience.

You’ve played Guildford’s Boiler Rooms recently too? We actually played Guildford on the first night of our tour and it was amazing to be honest. We’ve played at Boiler Rooms before but we’ve never had our own show there. There were some crazy fans there so were a little shaky. But Guildford’s always a good crowd. Pre-show we were in our dressing room and they now have a little tattoo parlour up there too, so me and our keyboard player managed some time for some pre-gig tattoos something our tour manager admittedly wasn’t too happy about. We’re just so Rock n roll.

What type of music do Fickle Friends play? Who influenced you? We describe ourselves as indie pop, but with an eighties twinge. We listen to so much stuff from back then. Loads of people are doing that whole throwback thing so much now that we draw a lot of influence from our contemporaries too, like the 1975, Bombay (Bicycle Club), Mystery Jets etc. I actually did a tour playlist for this tour that has stuff like Clean Cut Kid, Jack Garrett, The 1975 and then older stuff like FRANK Music and Justice. We are influenced by all sorts

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

ENTERTAINMENT

Fickle Friends are midway through their UK tour and will be at Aldershot’s Art Centre on Friday March 16.

really. People like to liken you to something, but it’s not always doable.

And rumour has it the album will be out later this year? Ideally yes, but we haven’t actually recorded anything yet. We’d love to put it out this year, but it could be early next year. It completely depends on the traction this year and what happens with our single next month.

For other bands it tends to go from playlist to playlist after that one, so it’s pretty exciting. Hopefully now we have our foot in the door things will only improve.

And, finally, is there an end goal for Fickle Friends?

What can we expect from the album?

Being able to sell out a Shepherd’s Bush gig just before our album comes out would be an amazing point to be at. We were just saying too that we want to go to America, we want to play Coachella and tour the states, and we want to play Glastonbury. It’s kind of the sky’s the limit and I could talk for hours.

It’ll be a continuation of what we’ve been doing, but it’ll be more like our recent stuff. What we’ve been writing recently has been a lot more intelligent. A bit more stylised. Plus I think we’ve got a bit better too.

But really, especially over the next few years, selling out somewhere like Shepherd’s Bush would be amazing! We’ve a long way to go, but hopefully we can get there!

Your song ‘Say no more’ made it onto the BBC Introducing playlist recently, how good does that feel? It felt great. Like, really great. It’s something we’ve been aiming towards for ages. So when it finally happened it was great, finally a nod from Radio One.

TALKING TO: JAY RAYNER By Rich Lee

14

Renowned restaurant critic, MasterChef judge and sometime jazz pianist Jay Rayner is embarking on two UK-wide tours in 2016, and he’s bringing both to Camberley Theatre on April 16th for a special Night of Food and Agony and My Dining Hell, which combine Jay Rayner’s flair for storytelling and acerbic wit with a hitherto hidden talent as a musician.

Tell us about the first part of your show, My Dining Hell. It’s a live show I do around crappy restaurant experiences. Although bad restaurant reviews are only about a fifth of the reviews that I publish every year, they are the thing that people remember the most acutely. I’m certain if I did a show called ‘My Dining Heaven’ no one would watch it. So I take you through the things that drive me the most nuts, be it through menu language or service - six or so restaurants that truly pissed me off.

Why do people enjoy the bad reviews so much? I think the narrative of bad things is just more compelling. If someone tells you about their lovely summer holiday when nothing went wrong, you’re going to get

very bored very quickly. But if they talk in detail about the hotel not being built or the plane almost crashing, now you want to know; you can immediately imagine what you’d do and how you’d feel about it. There is also an element of disbelief that people who are trying to sell something to you - be it a holiday or restaurant experience - would get it so wrong. It just baffles me.

So you’re still surprised after 15 years of reviewing restaurants? Yes it’s amazing isn’t it? You’d think I would look upon the world and all its stupidities and go, ah well. But I always hope to have a nice dinner because I’m a very hopeful chap. And then it all goes horribly wrong!

How do you set up your restaurant reviews? The mechanics are really very slight. I get a lot of requests from aspiring writers asking to come with me on a review to see what it’s like and I have to reply, “What, have you never seen somebody eat three courses?” Because that’s all it is. But essentially, I book under a pseudonym, they don’t know I’m coming, I turn up and sit there and have three or more courses and possibly make a few notes.

Before the food even arrives at your table, what are the most grievous sins a restaurant can inflict upon you? The one that drives me absolutely nuts is when they say, “May I describe the concept of our menu?” If a menu needs

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

a concept all is lost! Offer me a drink and shove a menu in my hands quickly and everything will be fine.

Where is the best place you’ve eaten in Surrey? I’ve attempted to review in Surrey but not done very well over the years. I wrote about a place called Stovells. I haven’t been there recently. Drake’s was nice. It was a while ago too to be fair. Stovell’s did a very good job. They’re a hell of a lot more rugged than they pretend to be.

The Night of Food and Agony part of your show sees you perform piano with your jazz quartet. When did you decide to out yourself as a musician? I suppose I started about four years ago. I played for about 30 years, just not very

well. And then four years ago a very far-sighted festival organiser gave me a whole year to put together an hour long set. And I kind of like a challenge. So I brought together a quartet - a brilliant bassist, saxophonist and singer - and it’s all about the music and the patter, songs from the food and drink repertoire, with stories from my life growing up with my agony aunt mother [the late Clare Rayner]. We do put on a good show and so I’m hoping the people of Surrey will be ready for us.

I

remember the sensation of trying polvoron biscuits so vividly. The crisp texture disintegrating as soon as my teeth touched the outer crust giving way to a mix of decadent fat and sugar was one of those lasting food memories. Whether it is a love passed on by my mum, (who gets almost giddy with excitement when in the possession of these biscuits), or just a kid’s love of sweet treats is hard to differentiate. Though the latter is probably true for the old girl too who’s family originate in Gibraltar off the coast of Southern Spain where polvoron orignate.

Date & Walnut Chilli Chocolate Polvoron By Stu Henshall PREP 15 minutes COOK 20 minutes YIELDS 15 Biscuits

They are so simple I have no idea why they aren’t more popular. It wouldn’t be The Alternative Kitchen if I didn’t twist it up so I have made a few changes. For one, I used butter instead of pig fat or lard. Not-so-fun fact but officials of the Spanish Inquisition way back when decreed that bakers used pork fat as a means of detecting secret Jews and Muslims at Christmas time when they were commonly made. It’s as strange a world now as it ever has been but I have no interest in keeping these balls of awesome from anyone. So butter it is. Saying that I may have slipped a tablespoon or two of rum in which non drinkers can just leave out. Whoops! The other thing is they are not usually filled with anything but the structure just about holds some extras so I added coarsely chopped walnuts, dates, and bitter dark chocolate and a generous amount of spice. Why not? You may have come across them in Cuba or the Philippines as a result of being former Spanish colonies. They definitely won’t be anything like this though. Give my recipe for Date and Walnut Chilli Chocolate Polvoron a go. You won’t regret it.

Ingredients 225 g Slightly salted butter 110 g Caster sugar 225 g Plain flour 50 g Ground almond 1 tbsp Spiced rum 1 tsp Vanilla extract 1 tsp Nutmeg 1 tsp Ground ginger 1 tsp Cinnamon 1 tsp Allspice 1/2 tsp Chilli powder 50 g Chopped walnuts 50 g Dark chocolate (cut into large chips) 50 g Dried pitted dates (quartered) 1 tbsp Cocoa powder for dusting 1 tbsp Icing sugar for dusting

Directions 1

Preheat oven to 160°C and toast flour and almond for 5 minutes

2

Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl for 5 minutes

3

Add the flour and ground almonds along with the spices, rum, and vanilla extract and mix thorougly

4

Divide into 50g balls, roll between your hands, and place 2cm apart on a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper

5

Chill for half an hour

6

Bake for 20 minutes or until the top is starting to harden and crack

7

Dust with cocoa and icing sugar and get the coffee on

Make your own

Easter Eggs!

To make a big’un and some little’uns you will need… •

Easter Egg Moulds from Lakeland – Large mould 9x14cm and 36 mini egg moulds

700g of milk, dark or white chocolate – the better the quality, the better the egg

A pan, glass bowl and a hob

Your hands, your little people’s hands and anyone else’s you’d like to enlist

A fridge

A pastry brush

A teaspoon

The Method: 1.

Set a bowl over a simmering pan of water ensuring that the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water (this is called a Bain Marie). Break the chocolate up into small pieces and add to the bowl. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon until completely melted. Be careful if you’re using white chocolate - if it heats too quickly it could separate and won’t work. Trust us, we did it!

2.

Leave the chocolate to cool for about ten minutes until it starts to thicken again. Using the pastry brush, coat the inside of the two large mould halves with a thin layer of chocolate and put in the fridge to set.

3.

Whilst the first layer hardens spoon the remaining chocolate into the smaller moulds, ensuring you fill each mould to the top. Put the mini moulds in the fridge and leave to set.

4.

Once the chocolate in the large mould has hardened - roughly ten minutes should do it, take it out of the fridge and apply another layer. Repeat the layering and setting process until you’ve got a nice thick layer on your moulds, leaving a little chocolate in the bowl to stick the eggs together with later.

5.

Leave all your chocolate filled moulds in the fridge for roughly an hour before you try and take your eggs out. Carefully remove the mini eggs and stick the halves together with some of the leftover melted chocolate. Remove (with care) the large egg halves, put the mini eggs inside and seal it all together with melted chocolate. You could wrap the mini eggs in different coloured foil before putting them in the large egg if you want the receiver to get a shiny, colourful surprise!

C’est voila! Your very own Easter egg to give to who you wish - or eat yourself of course, you’ve worked hard after all! Now all you need to do is decorate it with sprinkles, icing, ribbon, whatever you like. Enjoy!

MARCH 2016

TEST DUMMY: BREATHE studios From the outside Breathe looked like any other alternative private gym: mood lights, simple-yet-effective signage, motivational quotes like “You can do it” and “Pump it Louder” on the window. But on the inside it’s something much more unique.

We began with some floor work. Face down, leg up, kick to the ceiling, you know the moves. No weights, just the weight of your body. Squats, lunges, single-leg lunges, planks with your hands in awkward but weirdly comfortable positions. “Smooth fluid movements” were the instructions given as we did stuff that I can only describe as a bad dad break-dancing and a press-up hybrid. The bad dad was an extra addition by a totally unbalanced me. “Army crawls were followed by faster army crawls. I attempted to gauge the feeling of an insect. I tried to be at one. It didn’t work”

Designed by someone truly obsessed with Scandinavian minimalism, Breathe Studio’s modern and simple look is quite astounding. I, though as much as I could sit and admire the interior, was there for MOVE Primal, a class I knew only 30 seconds of a YouTube video about.

We then split off into pairs. I, having no friends and being teacher’s pet, went with John. While I hanged from a metal pole attached to the ceiling, John commenced with some kind of unorthodox burpees. We’d do this for as long as I could hang (which wasn’t very long), before swapping.

I arrive with time to spare, hastily change into my exercise gear and assume position on the studio floor. “Hi I’m Tayler,” I contemplated shouting to our instructor, as well as Breathe Studios owner, John Cann, but decided against it because I’m still heavily panting from getting changed so fast. Mr Benn makes it look so easy.

Laps of the studio then followed and this was when the obvious primal moves came into the equation. Running, like normal, was followed by monkey lunges, like not normal. Army crawls were followed by faster army crawls. I attempted to gauge the feeling of an insect. I tried to be at one. It didn’t work. I was rubbish.

A background in elite sport, and an insatiable appetite for new challenges form John’s unique approach. Expect intensity, expect results.

But this was strength training at its rawest. This was the glitz and glamour others add nowadays thrown in the bin. This was what’s needed and nothing else.

SPORT

Strength training does not mean bloated, bulky physiques. It doesn’t have to mean strain and weight-gain. Using your own body as resistance and functional strength classes sculpt lean, strong, useful muscles. This class progresses movements towards control and complexity. Using compound, organic movements; these classes will set fire to your metabolism and continue to burn calories long after you have completed your class. You will reshape and rebalance the natural beauty of your body. Train your body as it has evolved to be. Movement practice is an essential part of enjoying your body to the full. Bullet proof your joints, realign your posture and relax your body and mind. The class opens the door to the full capacity of human movement. You will stretch, strengthen, mobilise and even invert yourself through combinations of Yoga, Pilates and Primal Movement. At Breathe Studios, they make sure you’re aware that what you do post-workout is just as important as the workout itself. The studio also houses their very own kitchen called Nourish. Nourish sells seasonal salads, nutrient dense snacks and superfood smoothies. Every recipe

is created and made in their kitchen - every salad dressing, drink and snack. So if you’re looking for a no mess about full-body workout that’s both enjoyable and challenging, you should probably pay Farnham’s Breathe Studios a visit. Farnham’s nice by the way.

SURREY Storm

With the new Super League season well underway, Tayler Willson caught up with Surrey Storm’s Georgia Lees to discuss her breakthrough season, the new-look and reshaped squad, and on just how far Storm can go this season… After a disappointing Super Saturday opening defeat to Bath University, people in the world of social media began to question whether the ma jor summer changes in the squad had scuppered Surrey Storm’s hopes of regaining the Superleague title. Now, one month on - and with four straight and convincing league wins under their belt – Storm have quickly silenced any early-season critics. Currently into her fourth season with Storm, Georgia Lees admitted that she doesn’t think last season’s success has put any additional pressure onto the team’s shoulders, despite fans’ expectations. “We had a few people leave in the summer, but also a few came in,” Lees tells us, “It’s always nice to change things up, it keeps it healthy. But with change comes a need to gel again, a need to settle down as a team, so we’ll only get better this year.

no different to if we didn’t win last year. These things take time and I’m sure the fans understand that.” Despite influential departures like Tamsin Greenway and Bongiwe Msomi, Lees remains confident that they still have what it takes to go all the way: “This season’s about learning for us, and for me, personally, it’s about game time and making the most of my first season of regular starts. It’s my fourth year at Storm but really the first time I’ve been given a regular starting chance and I need to take it. The 22-year-old did heap praise for Greenway still who, despite retiring from all forms of Netball in the summer, remains at Storm in a coaching capacity, a role that Lees believes is key if the side is going to be successful this year. “Losing someone like Tamsin is always going to be hard, she’s irreplaceable and she’s taught us a lot. But still having her here for advice, for pointers and tips is going to be ma jor this season. All the girls look up to her. “She and I have one-to-one sessions outside of our normal training hours and she is still really helping me develop my game. I’m progressing as a player and the more I play the more I’ll progress. Hopefully we’ll progress as a team, too, and as the ending of the season nears we’ll be at our very best!”

“But in that, I don’t think there’s more pressure on us. If anything, we know we will improve with time, so the pressure on us now is

JUNIOR HOLIDAY CAMPS All of the Storm Junior Camps are over seen by Coach Tamsin Greenway, and are tailored to each age group to get the best out of their experience. All camps are led by a Storm player or coach, with help from the Community Coaching Team to ensure all participants are looked after! JUNIOR STORM NETBALL CAMPS At this age it’s all about practising the basics and learning the game, encouraging the girls to explore new positions and learn all aspects of playing the sport, as well as educating them about Surrey Storm. Over the 2 days they will play fun warm up games, practise their ball skills and the essential movements all netball players need. They will be coached attacking and defensive skills as well as shooting and team building exercises. Both days end with a Surrey Stormthemed Tournament, which is split into age and ability. STORM MASTERCLASS CAMPS These camps are suitable for those both in clubs or school teams. At these camps it’s important the basics are still reinforced and taken to new levels, they also begin to introduce the tactical side and awareness of the game. Over the 2 days they will practise thinking games and challenges, ball skills and movements as well as core and stability work. There will be more specific attack and defensive themes, as well as tactical set ups on court. Both days end with a tournament where the players get to practise their newly learnt skills. They also encourage Surrey Storm education as it’s important players at this age get to witness elite level netball. STORM EXPERIENCE CAMP Led by the one of Storm’s elite coaching staff, these camps are aimed at the more serious netball player and will focus on an individual position to help players really define their match play. They are looking for players involved in satellite, county or regional academy squads. The summer camp will be a pre-season camp, modelled on the Surrey Storm pre-season training. It will focus on fitness, skill development, SAQ and strength and conditioning needed for players to prepare for the season. Included in the sessions will be specific coaching as well as video analysis sessions.

SURREY SCORCHERS Henry Wilkins has completed a transfer to Spanish outfit Globalca ja Quintanar following his short stint at Surrey Scorchers. The Guildford-born shooting guard signed during the pre-season period and made a total of 14 appearances for Scorchers, scoring a 5.42ppg average. Wilkins will now head to Liga EBA outfit Globalca ja Quintanar, returning to Spanish basketball having played for C.B. Villarrrobledo last season. Upon making the transfer, Wilkins said: “I want to say a huge thanks to Coach Creon and the whole Scorchers organisation for giving me the opportunity to represent Surrey. They stuck with me through some tough times early in the season with my health and I’m very grateful for their help during that period. “I also want to thank them for their cooperation and understanding throughout this process. We are a young club going through some growing pains but I’m confident that Coach Creon and the boys will turn the season around in these remaining months! I’m super excited to return to Spain and join the league in their race to the playoffs!”

SURREY SMASHERS A demoralising 4-1 defeat to Nottingham University last month has left last year’s finalists Surrey Smashers on the brink of failing to reach the National Badminton League finals in May. Smashers were left stunned by a convincing performance from the home side in front of their home fans at the Jubilee Campus Sports Centre and the Sky Sports cameras. Starting the night second bottom on 6 points, Smashers knew that a match-night win was needed to close the gap on Team Derby in fourth position. However, Smashers, who finished in first place in the league before losing in the finals last season, now find themselves rock bottom of the table with only one game remaining. Four of the six teams go through to the finals in Crawley and Smashers will have to beat Birmingham Lions on March 21 to have any chance of progressing.
