Dear Reader, I don’t know about you, but my half-full glass feels very much like it’s brimming with the season of Spring. The mornings are feeling that bit brighter and the evening sun begins to make a welcome return to our windows. So on with the month of March, and a monolithic amount of activity for one to welcome with open arms. We salute the fabulous femmes and celebrate their glory via International Women’s Day, and of course to the child bearers among you we have a fun list of activities to celebrate, you Mothers! The middle of March see the return of the wonderful Guildford International Music Festival; a roster of artists from a variety of musical backgrounds, brought together into the town for a run of events lasting just over a week. FYI - It’s going to be an awful lot of fun! Runners (and spectators) at the ready - it’s time for the Surrey Half Marathon to hit the streets. This year the course runs from Woking to Guildford and back; check out our coverage for road closures and more. And of course, that all important exercise of democracy and freedom, the General Election, is just a couple of months away and with it continues our coverage on who’s who and who intends to do what. Remember that whilst this magazine you hold in your hands is full of information and wonder, if you find yourself in a moment without said magazine in your grasp, you can always head to theguide2surrey.com for much more information and much more wonder. Business Owner

Have you decided who you’re voting for yet?

Have you decided who you’re voting for yet?

Have you decided who you’re voting for yet?

I haven’t decided yet.

I’ve had some ideas, but I keep changing lodgings so am not registered. So I need to sort that out!

I have. It’s the Conservatives, because they’ve got the economy going the right way, I’m not saying it’s completely straight but they got us out of a big mess, there were some tough decisions but they took them.

What would it take for you to reach a decision? Lots of things really. The economy, foreign policy, housing. There are a whole load of issues.

Assuming you were registered, what would be the deciding factor for you to cast your vote this May?

What one issue means the most to you?

I think with me it’s the welfare system, making sure that people who need it receive the right help. But then it’s also important to make it harder for people to receive benefits who don’t want to work, so that they don’t make more money for being out of work than they would in employment.

I think about housing. People have come to a point where they can’t afford their rent and have to depend on the government. But then there are endless wars all around the world and all the money spent on them that could be put into the economy. Do local issues affect your vote in the General Election? From where I’m from its crime. My house was robbed last week and they took about £20,000 of jewellery and it’s a problem for much of my area. I haven’t heard my local MP discuss it, but if they made tackling crime a part of their platform it might sway my vote.

Would your vote be based on local or national issues? I think around here immigration is important to a lot of people. I understand some points of view; I’ve read everyone’s manifesto. Some of them make sense but others, like UKIP, are a little too extreme for me. But I feel like there will be more people voting for them this year than ever. I think that might be down to the media to some extent.

From past experience, and from what I’m hearing already, Labour will be spending a lot of money and just put us back in the same mess. You can’t just keep spending money on a problem; you’ve got to find savings. Do local issues affect your vote in the General Election? No, mainly national issues. They affect everything and everyone. But my belief is, if I was ever in politics, there’s no way that I would have the party in the local council in opposition to the party in government. Because their goals are so opposed to one another, they’re not doing anybody any favours.

March 2015

Sunday 8th March is International Women’s Day; but March is also Women’s History Month, and 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the WI. While over the past century advancements in women’s rights have been substantial – and particularly in the developed world – it’s inarguable that there’s still a long way to go. As the most important day in Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day aims for greater awareness of gender equality. International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialised world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. Now in some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. It’s now an official holiday in many countries across the globe, many of which are developing countries. But that doesn’t mean that we in Surrey shouldn’t recognise it; indeed there are events taking place across the county which that handy info box will tell you all about. The theme for IWD 2015 is ‘Make it Happen’, encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women. To highlight this, the colour you want to adorn is purple! Paint your website, blog, emails for the day in support, and be sure to get yourself noticed on social media with the hashtags: #MakeItHappen #womensday #IWD2015 #internationalwomensday and #PaintItPurple. So be sure to (literally) nail your colours to the mast for this year’s International Women’s Day, and support a great cause! Find out more about the day itself at www.internationalwomensday.com.

IWD EVENTS WIFE Conference Holiday Inn Guildford | 7th March The Women in Fitness Empowerment Conference aims to empower, motivate and encourage females working in the fitness industry. YOUR LOCAL WI The Women’s Institute celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2015, and it’s fair to say that the old perception of the WI is decidedly ‘last century’. The Surrey Federation of WI’s is packed, with literally dozens all over the county: Here’s a few we recommend:

WINNING BY A NOSE: Surrey’s Search Dogs This month we’re going to take a look at Surrey Search and Rescue’s dogs, and their handlers what makes their working relationship so special. Dogs are an essential tool in searches. The dogs are finding your scent and therefore hopefully finding the missing person. As you sit there right now reading this, your body is dumping skin cells and scent. To a dog there’s a bright neon flashing arrow above each and every one of us. Blink, blink, blinkity blink. It’s important to remember that when air scenting the dogs are not looking specifically for one person; they’re sniffing for any human scent. What the dog’s nose is doing is looking for a needle in a haystack… In a field full of haystacks… In a country full of fields. Sounds tricky, but to a dog’s

nose this is actually not too taxing. Let me give you the idea: Think about when you smell something familiar or nostalgic for the first time. You haven’t smelt it in years but in that split second your brain recalls a thousand memories and relives years of experience. That’s what it’s like for a dog… all the time.

The dog is communicating all the time; every tiny bit of body language is a sentence in an incredibly intelligent conversation. Why has the dog’s ears twitched? Why is his tail up? Why is it down? These are all clues and it takes a seriously switched on person to bear all this in mind and search at the same time.

The Dog teams are different from Foot Search teams because there’s only three of them; the dog, the Dog Handler and their Support. On deployment a Foot Search Team will head out in teams of three to five. It’s seriously demanding but ultimately, to the dog, this is all just a game. Oh and because it’s looking for a human scent, get in a dog’s way and you’ll just muddy the waters.

What’s more, these dogs are all everyday normal dogs (don’t tell them that). Training starts simple, but eventually you’re asking friends to sit in bushes for you to find. The dogs are all loved pets as well as serious workers. Having spent a day training with them, they all seemed to be normal happy, yappy creatures. The minute the handlers put their jackets on it’s like someone has thrown a switch. It’s a strange thing to see a dog go into professional mode but an inspiring one at the same time. Just like their handlers, the term volunteer simply means unpaid professional.

It’s like translating the works of Chaucer into Mandarin… backwards. Through hours and hours of training the dog and handler have formed a bond stronger than you can possibly imagine.

OUR HISTORY: THE ORIGINAL GONE GIRL by Will Knowlton It’s not that often that famous people go missing, but when a mystery writer plays hooky you’ve got to sit up and take notice. Especially when the endgame doesn’t involve a body or a decent explanation. Now, unless you’re so dense that light bends around you, you’ve probably heard of Agatha Christie. Agatha was already famous and enjoying the success of her latest book when, one evening in 1926, she disappeared. Turns out Agatha, by the November of that year, was well on her way to a nervous breakdown. Her husband had been schtupping one Miss Neele for quite a while and her mother had just passed away. Having spent the day out, she came home to find hubby had finally left with some of his things and was on his way to nail Neele down Godalming way. By a quarter to ten, she calmly kissed her daughter goodbye, jumped into her Morris Cowley and drove from their home in Sunningdale, off into the night. The next morning Agatha’s car was found fricking miles away near Newlands Corner. She had left her car, no doubt avoiding the dog poo that plagues the area, and headed off into the trees. It all gets a little like one of her novels at this point; her car was found with the bonnet up but the lights on. All that was found in the car was her

fur coat (don’t tell PETA), an expired driving licence and a suitcase. In an age where news constituted Mrs Miggins having a fall and little Cuthbert getting new shoes, one can only imagine how fast this information spread. Within hours the Police had mobilised 500 odd officers, which in those days was near as dammit everyone including the tea lady. A staggering reward of 100 quid was offered for any information and even the Scouts were called in. Dinner party fact for you; this was the first time an aircraft was used in the UK to look for a missing person. Even celebrities were brought in. Dorothy L. Sayers lent a hand and Arthur Conan Doyle took a discarded glove of Agatha’s to a Medium (which turned out to be as useful as an ash tray on a motor cycle). By the time the 11 day search was in full swing, there were around 15,000 volunteers combing the countryside. So having got everyone worried, and making public services take huge strides in search techniques, the question remained: where was she? Dead surely; perhaps at the hands of someone with a name like Bradford Pendleton. But no; Agatha was in Harrogate checking into a hotel as Mrs. Teresa Neele of Cape Town clearly a nut shot at Archie and his war on two fronts. Yes indeed, she’d been dancing the Charleston, playing bridge, doing crosswords, and reading the newspapers (serious party girl - no more Jagers for you…) all along.

REDUCED TO CHEERS Reduced Shakespeare Company bring the funny to Camberley Theatre on 29th March… By now, most people are surely familiar with the brilliant Reduced Shakespeare Company. If not, the idea is this: brevity = hilarity. A threeman comedy troupe that takes long, serious subjects and reduces them to short, sharp comedies. Trust us when we say it makes for a hilarious spectacle. Since 1981, ‘The Bad Boys of Abridgement’ have created nine stage shows, two television specials, several failed TV pilots and numerous radio pieces - all of which have been performed, seen, heard and translated into Klingon the world over. And now they’re coming to Camberley Theatre! The company’s first three shows, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare

(abridged), The Complete History of America (abridged) and The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) enjoyed a nine-year run in Piccadilly Circus. Not only were they London’s longestrunning comedies, but at one point the Reduced Shakespeare Company had more shows running in the West End than Andrew Lloyd Webber. This time, the RSC have come to tackle that famously niche topic, ‘The Complete History of Comedy’. Yes that’s right, the bad boys of abridgement (sorry to repeat it, but that’s a heck of a nickname) will finally tackle the subject they were born to reduce. Here’s what to expect: “From the high-brow to the low, The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) covers comedy through the ages, from Aristophanes and Shakespeare to Vaudeville and Charlie Chaplin.

to an amusement park, but you’ll still come away with the same feeling of nausea and motion sickness. From cavemen telling “Rock Rock” jokes to Chris Rock and everything in-between, the Company leave no joke untold as they deconstruct the entire history of comedy in 90 rollicking minutes.” Now, who doesn’t love live comedy? And if there’s one thing better than live comedy, it’s a history of live comedy told hilariously. Be sure to catch these phenomenal performers on your local patch; get a ticket before the quantity is ‘reduced’ to nothing (sorry…) Reduced Shakespeare Company presents The Complete History of Comedy (Abridged)’ takes place at Camberley Theatre on Sunday 29th March at 7.30pm. Tickets are £16.

The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) is far more affordable than tickets

Wonderland

ST MARY’S CHURCH | 21ST MARCH 2015 sees the anniversary of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, so naturally a family concert is in order, for Lewis Carroll was, of course, a Guildford-dweller. ‘Wonderland’ is sure to be a wonderful experience, as 12 leading composers have written a short piece inspired by one of the chapters. The pieces will be performed in order, telling the narrative through music, interspersed by an actor reading a specially written script. Wonderful…

Talking to…Will Todd

By Joe Payne

Will Todd is one of the most celebrated composers in the UK today, with a piece commissioned for the Diamond Jubilee. We spoke to Will ahead of his performance with Tenebrae at the Holy Trinity Church on 13th March… Tenebrae will be performing compositions from your new album ‘Lux Et Veritas’ on the opening night of the Guildford International Music Festival. How does it feel to have your works performed to your adopted hometown crowd? I’m massively excited that my Guildford friends will have the opportunity to hear such an amazing, world-class choir on their doorstep. The acoustic at Holy Trinity Church is perfect for the voices of Tenebrae and I’m very proud that they will be performing a programme of my music, including some sections from (flagship work) Mass in Blue. I’ve got so many wonderfully supportive friends here in Guildford - it should be a good night! Your piece ‘The Call of Wisdom’ was commissioned for the Diamond Jubilee. How did you get involved with such a prestigious event? I worked on a community out-reach project with the music staff at St Edmondsbury Cathedral in 2009, and on the basis of writing a piece for children’s voices for them I got asked to write for St Pauls. It’s proof of the fact that projects however small can lead on to amazing things! Guildford International Music Festival is one of the town’s cultural highlights. As a local will you be attending any of the events? Are there any performers you can recommend? There’s a wealth of music on offer with something to suit all tastes. I’m particularly interested in the Holywell Ensemble concert

at the beautiful St Martha’s Church. At the other end of the spectrum The Beat at The Boileroom! You’re a Guildford Resident now. What do you enjoy about the town? Do the surroundings have any input on your music? I love the fact that you can walk into the countryside from the centre of Guildford in a few minutes. For me it’s the best possible blend of town living and countryside access. I love taking a walk through the Chantries as a way of unlocking the music in my head. You’re equally renowned for composing choral and jazz music. Are there any other musical genres you could see yourself taking a foray into? Opera and musical theatre! My Family Opera Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is now entering its 3rd season at Opera Holland Park and the CD will be coming out later this year. It’s also touring to The Wilderness Festival and The Royal Opera House in November. Which contemporary artists are you listening to, and who should we look out for? I’m particularly into the choral music of Latvian composer Êriks Ešenvalds at the moment. There’s a new CD out right now. Gorgeous!

Damien Hirst: New Religion New Religion will be on show at The Lightbox from 28 March - 5 July 2015

March 28th sees Woking’s The Lightbox gallery and museum host the Damien Hirst: New Religion, an exhibition of silkscreen prints and sculptural editions by one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists. In association with Paul Stolper and The British Council, the exhibition will explore the relationship between science, art and religion that have dominated Hirst’s 25-year career as a thought-provoking, and at times controversial, artist. New Religion was first exhibited at Paul Stolper Gallery in 2005 and has been the subject of shows in Oslo, Moscow, Venice, Sofia and at All Hallow’s Church in London. The exhibition itself is made up of 44 silkscreen

prints and four sculptures that make up some of Hirst’s most intriguing work to date. Hirst first came to prominence as a leading member of the much celebrated Young British Art movement in the 1990s. This group, that included Tracy Emin, Sarah Lucas and The Chapman Brothers, were known for their openness to materials and processes, entrepreneurial attitude and shock tactics which they used to create a buzz around their exhibitions. Hirst’s most infamous piece, a shark preserved in formaldehyde entitled ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’, embodies this desire to shock using the themes of science and mortality.

One of the most traditional gifts one can buy their dedicated and doting mothers is of course the floral delights of a wonderful bouquet of flowers. Smell the blossom and raise the spirits of the one who receives them. Allsorts Flowers, located on Obelisk Way in Camberley is the answer this Mothering Sunday.

When you visit a venue with the tag line ‘Live Life Adventurously’, it’s fair to say that your day out is unlikely to be a ‘sit-down, chill out’ affair. When said venue is actually called ‘Go Ape’, you know that you are going to be exerting a good deal of energy. So if a sit down Sunday lunch and a bunch of flowers isn’t going to tickle Mum’s fancy then this sure enough will. Go Ape for Mother’s Day.

Perhaps you’re looking for an interesting receptacle to place those beautiful flowers that you just bought mum? With many beautiful, reclaimed and up-cycled items to peruse, you will probably be buying yourself a gift or two at the same time as mother.

WHERE TO EAT: Cellar Magneval, Fleet

IF WINE AND CHEESE ARE A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN, THEN CELLAR MAGNEVAL MUST SURELY BE THE PEARLY GATES… In France, l’apéritif isn’t just a quick snifter to be daintily supped at the start of a meal or before a social engagement. Over the Channel, the apéritif is the embodiment of the French way of life. It’s about allowing your mind and body to stop and rest after a long day at work. It is the pause, the exhale, between the daily routine, work and dinner. And it’s a concept that’s realised to perfection at Cellar Magneval.

We dived straight in with a sharing platter and a glass of superb malbec. These platters change on a day-to-day basis, whether on a whim or whatever happens to be good on the day. Happily, what we had was more than just good: it was a grazer’s dream. Sweet and earthy ribbons of wild boar saucisson, luscious marinated artichoke hearts, oak-smoked olives, sweetly sharp sundried tomatoes, two kinds of pesto and an insanely moreish seafood salad, all served with an exquisite selection of breads including walnut and apricot, sourdough and ciabatta.

Whether it’s enjoying lamb as the star of your family Easter meal or simply cooking with lamb while it’s in season, we have three great recipes for you to try this month.

Ingredients

• • • • • • • • • • •

500g of diced lamb shoulder 1 small onion 3 cloves of garlic Half a red chilli 1 slice of white bread made into bread crumbs 1 free range egg Salt and Pepper 2 tomatoes Half a red onion 1/3 of a cucumber Crusty bread rolls

1.

Place the lamb into a food processor and blend until you have a good coarse texture. Place the lamb into a bowl. Then place the onion, garlic and chilli into the blender and chop to a fine consistency. Mix this into the lamb along with the egg and bread crumbs. Season with salt and pepper.

2.

Shape the mixture into patties and chill in the fridge for 20 minutes.

3.

Grill the burgers for 5 minutes on each sides and then transfer to a well-oiled non-stick frying pan and cook for 8 – 10 minutes turning once.

4.

Finely slice the tomatoes, red onion and cucumber and mix to make a salsa.

5.

Serve the burgers in a roll with the salsa.

Method

LAMB KEBABS

T

his style of cooking ensures that the meat is so soft it just falls of the bone.

• • • • • • •

1 large leg of lamb, about 3kg/6lb 8oz purchased from the Joint in Guildford. 4 onions, sliced 8 garlic cloves, peeled, but left whole 4 carrots, leave whole if small or quarter lengthways 300ml white wine Optional 300ml stock of your choice. If you are not using wine increase to 600ml 2 sprigs of rosemary and 1 sprig of thyme tied together with string.

Method

Ingredients

1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Heat oven to 120C/fan 100C/gas ½. Place a large lidded casserole on the hob and brown the seasoned leg of lamb on all sides. Make sure it is well browned all over. Use olive oil if the lamb sticks too much. Once done remove the excess oil from the pan. Add the vegetables, followed by the wine and stock. Season well and bring to the boil. Cover the pan. Cook for 7 hrs, turning twice. After 5 hrs the meat will be cooked and should offer no resistance to the knife. The meat does not need to rest but to finish the sauce, transfer the meat and vegetables to a serving dish. Strain the sauce into a jug and pour or blot away the fat with kitchen paper. Pour the sauce into a pan then boil the liquid hard to reduce by a quarter, by which time it will be rich and full of flavour. Serve with vegetables of your choice but we’d recommend mashed potatoes and steamed greens.

ENJOY A FAMILY STAYCATION AT MANOR FARM, ALTON

Now for those of you who are uninitiated, Glamping is seriously posh and luxurious camping. This is not a nylon tent and a stove on the side of Ben Nevis; this is something entirely different. Featherdown has locations across the UK, but in the theme of keeping it local, we would like to highlight Manor Farm in Alton. First, the “tents”; Now, the use of the inverted commas is entirely deliberate. I touched on this a moment ago, but let me reiterate: these tents are not small triangle jobs with little or no space; they are in fact very spacious, chic and luxurious. First of all, and I think most importantly, the toilet is en suite. Yes, that got your attention didn’t it? The toilet is actually a mains flushing contraption, so no tanks with funny smells or that strange blue water that seems to inhabit many a portaloo.

Away

“There’s no stress just the gentle pace of country life; a life without the complications of the rush hour, the school run or Smithers from accounts...” There is a double bed, a further single bed and (my own personal favourite) a canopy bed, hidden in a cupboard. The main area of the tent is open plan, a little pipe stove and kitchen area where you’ll find everything you need to rustle up some country grub. The interior is light and airy without being cold; you won’t find yourself stirring in the small hours freezing and reaching for an extra layer and the tents are warm and, dare I say it, snuggly. Having emerged from the beds of greatness and having gently coaxed the

Now let’s be fair, the thought of being cooped up in a car for hours kind of defeats the purpose of a weekend away. So then, how about the train instead, for only on the train can one can sit back and watch the stunning countryside fly past the window without lifting a finger. On arrival in St Ives it’s time to find your home from home. We have such a place: the town’s newest boutique guest house with its six individual guest rooms nestling in the historic centre. We give you Trevose Harbour House. This boutique guest house (which opened in March 2013) is ideally situated to enjoy the many cafés and restaurants that the historic seaside town has to offer. The town itself is crammed with things to see and do; numerous art galleries, workshops and studios are scattered amongst the delightful streets and alleyways of the town. The owners have redesigned the guest house

LIFESTYLE

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Lifestyle fire to life in the stove, it’s time to take that first breath of fresh air. Open up the front of the tent and take in the view of rolling hills and the gentle noises of the farm. The beauty of Manor Farm is that everything you need for breakfast is right there; collect your eggs from the chicken coop, saunter over to the farm’s larder to stock up on bacon, sausages and milk… There’s no stress just the gentle pace of country life; a life without the complications of the rush hour,

the school run or Smithers from accounts. Now, admittedly there isn’t an en suite bathroom, but not a stone’s throw from your tent you will find lovely running hot water cascading from showers, and these are normally housed in a converted barn. So, there’s everything that you’ll need, whether as a couple or a family. Let’s get glamping!

to present a new ethos and experience for the discerning traveller. So what’s on offer? Well, there are six individually designed bedrooms which feature Neal’s Yard Remedies, Wi-Fi and giant beds all covered in sumptuous Egyptian cotton (amongst other little luxuries). Trevose offers a warm welcome, impeccable service and a mouth-watering breakfast. Just look at the menu: granola parfait, croissants, locally sourced eggs, bacon and sausages sit alongside fruit juices, muesli and organic toast made with locally made bread. Indeed the whole menu is alive with local, fresh and organic produce. With their stylish coastal setting and just a quiet whisper of retro design, they have created an ideal place to relax, unwind and explore all that St Ives and Cornwall has to offer. For a trip away, we can’t recommend Trevose Harbour enough…

ROLLER SKATING FOR ADULTS

7th March Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Every Saturday 5:00pm-6:30pm Arena Leisure Centre, GU15

Saturday 7th March will see this year’s Netball London Live, with our very own Surrey Storm taking on Hertfordshire Mavericks in the 2015 Netball Superleague at the Copper Box Arena. Storm defeated the Mavericks 52-50 in a dramatic finale; in what was the Olympic Park’s first ever professional netball match. Last year’s Netball London Live also smashed the domestic attendance record for a netball crowd in the United Kingdom, with 3,151 packed into the venue. With a capacity of 6,000, though, this year is going to bigger and better than ever! Visit www.netballlondonlive.com for more info!

FARNBOROUGH TOWN VS BATH CITY 21st March – 3:00pm kick-off Paddy Power Park Spencer Day’s Farnborough Town side host a mid-table Bath City side in what is a vital fixture for the home team. The Borough are looking to drag themselves away from the drop-zone and with just over a month of the season remaining, this match against Bath is a must-win. So go and cheer on the boys, and get behind them in their bid to escape the drop!

Each Saturday, Camberley’s Arena Leisure Centre plays host to an hour-and-a-half session of adults on skates. New skaters will receive coaching and guidance on their technique, whilst the more advanced skaters can glide elegantly, without the worry of surrounding children. These sessions usually are a ‘free skate’ session, but from time-to-time they can also include games. Skates are available to hire at the centre, but other than that, it’s a putyour-wallet-back-in-your-pocket kind of night.

SPORT

March 2015

SPORTS NEWS FROM ALDERSHOT TO NEPAL Aldershot Town made history when their Academy flew over to Nepal this week to compete in the Aaha RARA! Gold Cup. No team from Europe has ever played in a South Asian country, but on February 10th the Shots entered the tournament at the quarter-final stage, and despite being defeated by surprise package Far Western FC 3-0, they return to North Hants with their heads held high. A young team that boasts several Nepalese youth international footballers, Far Western ran out comfortable winners against Aldershot’s inexperienced academy.

The gruelling sixteen-hour flight to Kathmandu was followed by a game against the Nepal Army Reserve side at 9am the following day. Following this was a six-hour coach journey to Pokhara, where the team stayed and played their fixtures. Considering this, and the heat, it’s no wonder that the team were a little lacklustre… Despite their exit from the tournament, Aldershot Town FC have continued to win new friends with several visits to schools and charities to donate much-needed sports equipment to remote and deprived areas of the country. Experiencing the work of Farnborough-based charity Sahara UK, The Shots’ Academy team and Club Director John Leppard have provided almost £1500 worth of shirts, boots and footballs to schools and the Sahara Academy, Nepal’s most successful charity, which provides education and football training for underprivileged and orphaned children aged 9 – 11. So while the results were perhaps not what the young team would have wanted, the visit itself was, an experience they’ll never forget…
