CONTENTS DEAREST READER, “Here today, up and off to somewhere else tomorrow! Travel, change, interest, excitement! The whole world before you, and a horizon that’s always changing!” Never had Toad been more correct when conversing with his partially sighted spring cleaner friend Mole, in Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale of Wind in the Willows. An altogether peculiar opening gambit one might think, but the month of Augustus thrusts us into the summer air like a toddler on a well sprung trampoline and well, Wind in the Willows sums up, oh so well the escapades that one might endure throughout the month. As per your expectations, this month’s publication is the definitive Guide 2 the summertime. Whether your diary has designs on a vacation or a staycation we endeavour to ensure August is accompanied by an abundance of joy and goodwill. We look at occupying your time by helping others and just how important it is to local organisations to have volunteers to call upon and to provide for our fellow citizens, whatever their need. Can you spare some time this summer (and beyond)? We talk to the originator of the seasonal anthem, ‘In the Summertime’ Mungo Jerry about that song and much more. Events and celebrations galore make up the remainder of The Guide 2 Your Month, whilst we also look to the great waterways of Surrey and how best to spend your time on them. Row, row, row… With much information to impart on you, read on dear Reader, read on! Despatch yourselves amongst our fair county and discover true treasures of Surrey. Tell the people, “The Guide 2 Sent You!” Yours Enthusiastically, Mr D’Arcy

On Thursday 9th July, Hart District Council gave approval for the building of the state of the art new leisure centre in Hitches Lane, Fleet. Boasting an energy-efficient sloping roof and sustainable timber detailing, the building will measure around 6,000 square metres inside and feature a 25m eight-lane pool and a 25m four-lane learner pool, a sports hall, climbing wall, studio facilities, steam and sauna facilities, café and gym. AIRPORT TO REDESIGN FLIGHT PATHS after resident voice concerns Proposals to change the way air traffic is controlled in the Fleet and Church Crookham area being considered after an ongoing planning developments with Rushmoor Borough Council and TAG Farnborough Airport published results of a consultation with neighbouring residents. Under those proposals, aircraft would be required to take off towards the south west, meaning those living to the west and north west of Farnborough would not be over-flown by departures from the airport. Should the proposals be accepted, planes will also be required to ascend much more quickly, meaning less noise pollution for residents and the report estimates 345,000 fewer people will be over-flown by planes below 4,000ft as a result. Some villages, however, will experience an increase in over-flying aircraft as a result, but the airport claims this will not be a problem for residents. The final approval is now in the hands of the Civil Aviation Authority.
all-weather pitches and natural grass pitches. Once the planning application and centre’s design was approved in April, the cost of the scheme, which is to have an anticipated life of 30 years, will be £22.5 million, with an additional £500,000 for consultancy fees. The next decision facing the Council will be the choice of the future management operation of Hart and Frogmore leisure centres. The council currently runs both leisure centres itself.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, AWARDS for Surrey Filmmaking Club
Members of the Surrey Border Movie Makers Club have scooped five awards at this year’s prestigious British International Amateur Film Festival 2015. The club’s Jeremy Bayne-Powell wowed the judges with his intelligent drama Cube3, winning four stars, while member Colin Lewis won a two star award twice for his comedy Strictly Come Mowing. Brian O’Connell’s romantic film Petals, filmed around London Embankment, won three stars in the story category. The club’s president Sir Paul Holden won two stars for his documentary Spitfire Restoration filmed at VMI Engineering Services in Aldershot. When they’re not winning awards, the Surrey Border Movie Makers run their social film making club at Farnham, Surrey at the St Joan’s Centre. They capture video using camcorders, pocket ‘still’ cameras and even phones to make films. Visitors are always welcome and on September 4th the club will be presenting an evening on Using your Phone for Video, including a talk and a selection of films taken using phone cameras alone. Entrance costs £5 on the door for non-members, with refreshments provided. For more information visit surreyborder.org.uk

Seeks Fundraisers for London Abseil If you’ve got a head for heights and a heart for giving, then this is the challenge for you! Local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell is holding a sponsored abseil down one of London’s newest landmarks – the Arcelormittal Orbit – and is looking for more participants to sign up. Standing at 262 feet, the Arcelormittal Orbit in London’s 2012 Olympic Park is the UK’s tallest structure, and rewards those at its summit with an incredible 20 mile view of the city’s skyline! The abseil will take place on Saturday 10th October - World Hospice and Palliative Care Day –and costs just £50 to register for, with a minimum sponsorship of £350. “This adrenaline-fuelled experience will be an incredible way to raise money for a charity which cares for those facing a serious progressive illness, such as cancer,” says Laura Moody, Events Fundraising Manager at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Every day we provide supportive and end of life care to over 250 patients and relatives who are facing cancer or another serious progressive illness. However, as the NHS/Government only covers 20% of our costs, we have to raise over £15,000 a day to be able to do this, and therefore rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community.” If you would like to register for this fantastic opportunity, or just want to find out more, visit www.pth.org.uk, call 01252 729446 or email fundraising@pth.org.uk. Michael
What is the Guildford Bike Project? Roland: The project was setup to give people who’d been out of work for a length of time experience and help them get back into employment. To give them skills that are transferrable and experience life in the work place again. We provide a vehicle -excuse the pun- to achieve that.
What is a typical day like? I come into the hospice on Thursday mornings. We’re assigned different children and I might have to help get them hoisted, dressed and washed. I might take the children outside, feed them, get them cooking, painting, fun messy stuff like that. Sometimes we take them on outings, or help with activities. Anything and everything really. I also work at the Guildford shop on Tuesday afternoons which is very different but fun.
Bikes are donated by the public, from Surrey Police, the University; all sorts of places. They may be discarded or have been stolen and no one’s come forward to collect them. They’re repaired in our workshop and sold at our shops in Guildford and Woking for, the ma jority selling for between £50 and £100.
Why did you seek voluntary work? I teach part time but I knew I wanted to do some voluntary work too but didn’t know what. I read an article about the charity and the children they support and just clicked on the link for volunteers. It takes time, with interviews and training, but now I’m here I can see why that’s important.
What do find most rewarding about volunteering? Peter (pictured): The project really helps volunteers like me find employment. You’re not sitting in your house, you’re out interacting with the community. And people in the community don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a bike. To me bikes are my hobby, so doing my City & Guilds here is a really good thing too.
What do find most rewarding about volunteering? I’m not doing it to feel good for myself but I feel if I can do anything for someone, however small, I’ve achieved something. I suppose one of the reasons I do it is because years ago I was very ill, and a lot of people did a lot for me and I recovered. So I figured it was my time to give something back.

Sight for Surrey, Leatherhead Who are Sight for Surrey? Sight for Surrey is a marvellous charity who offers a lifeline to members of our community with a vision impairment who, maybe otherwise feel isolated. I have always felt fully supported by them, especially by their Volunteer Coordinator, and have always been aware of the fact that everybody within the organisation cares. What kind of volunteer work do you do? There were many roles to choose from and I am currently a Virtual Befriender and have also been helping out with administrative tasks in the office. What do you get from volunteering? Some of the people I call every week have become good friends. They all live on their own and often have few visitors; on certain occasions I have been the only person they speak to all week. To me, this underpins the importance of the work that Sight for Surrey does. Visit www.sightforsurrey.org.uk or call 01372 377701 for more information

Got Some Time to Spare? If you want to volunteer but are not sure what kind of work you would like to do, there are volunteer centres in your area that will help you find the right work to suit your lifestyle and commitments.
Who do you volunteer for? Shooting Star Chase are a wonderful charity who help families and children who have life-limiting conditions and who also support families in their homes and after the children pass.

Around Surrey and North East Hampshire, charities and non-profit organisations work tirelessly to both improve their communities and the lives of the most vulnerable people that live there. Volunteer workers are vital to helping these organisations run. These are people for whom giving just a little of their time, energy and passion can make all the difference to somebody else. We spoke to volunteers across a spectrum of local causes to find out more about what they do and why they do it…

Oakleaf Enterprise, Guildford Oakleaf is the only mental health charity in Surrey working as a social enterprise to provide vocational training for those suffering from mental health issues. How did you get involved with Oakleaf Enterprise? I came here about thirteen years ago for counselling when I was going through real dire straits and they really helped me. Sometime later I realised I wanted to volunteer and was directed towards Oakleaf who run a number of different training projects, including gardening, upholstery and IT. I have a background in IT so I now help to deliver a very comprehensive, graduated computing course (CLAIT), for everyone from complete beginners to more experienced. I also run a biweekly fitness class. What do you enjoy about your voluntary work? People work at different paces but it’s hugely inspirational to see the determination and effort of individuals here to train and learn new skills. That’s helped by the environment at Oakleaf: the support, the camaraderie and counselling services. It’s a real family. Here, I get support, I get love and understanding that I would not get elsewhere. Visit www.oakleaf-enterprise.org or call 01483 303649 for more info
Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care Shop Volunteer, Fleet, Hampshire Who do you volunteer for? Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care provide support and palliative care for local people with cancer or other serious progressive illnesses. What appealed to you about volunteering for the Hospice? They looked after me in a big way about four years ago after I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. They helped me get back to a position of enjoying life and still wanting to be around. So volunteering is my way of saying thank you to them. What is the nature of your work? I do about four hours a week and do whatever is required. I sort through donations to the shop to be sold, some to be thrown out. I put out pictures, crockery, ornaments and the like on the shelves. I’m happy to steam the clothes if needed. I’m quite open. What do find most rewarding about volunteering? I like being able to say thank you to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care but it also means that things that were going to be lost are going to be given a new lease of life, which is really what the charity is all about. Kane FM 103.7 Community Radio for Surrey and Hants Who are Kane FM? Kane FM, to me, are a part of community, bringing music and people together. I find everyone who works there are very involved with projects outside Kane FM, such as with schools. They bring in students to teach them about radio and mixing and how to present. They give them a real confidence boost and a sense of direction. How did you get involved with Kane FM? I’d always been interested in radio so about two years ago I approached them and asked if I could spend some time at the station. So I did; I did some flyering for them and got to watch them in the studio which was amazing to me, and then I was given the chance to do an hour’s live slot at the end. I was so nervous! But, once I was away I didn’t want to stop. Then they invited me onto the breakfast show and I said: okay! What do you enjoy about the work? I enjoy people texting in and saying they’re enjoying the show and the music I’m playing. It tends to bring people together who have the same interests. In my career, I do want to be a radio presenter, but I wouldn’t even had these aspirations if I hadn’t had this start at Kane. Helena Star presents her own show on Kane FM 103.7, Thursdays 3pm- 5pm. THE VITAL VOLUNTEERS Volunteering is about as noble a way to spend some of your valuable free time as we can think of – but what’s the deal? And how do we go about it? Here’s a bit of info on the whats, wheres, whys and hows of volunteering in Surrey and North Hampshire…
Why do it? While we have at length covered our charity of the year, Surrey Search and Rescue, in these hallowed pages, we thought for August we’d offer a slightly different flavour. For you see SURSAR are, as most charitable organisations, sustained by the volunteer sector. But they’re one of literally hundreds – and that’s just in this area…
Across Surrey and North Hampshire there are dozens and dozens of charities looking for good-willed members of the general public to give up just a bit of spare time to help, in a vast array of different ways. Whether it’s on call for SURSAR, spending time with an elderly person for a day or working in a charity shop, there’s always a way you can do something a little more altruistic with your free time…
Who Needs Volunteers? In short, just about every charitable organisation in the area! There are several ‘umbrella’ organisations who source volunteer roles, pairing up your own circumstances and skill sets to roles out there. Are you good with people but only have a day to spare? Perhaps you’d like to spend it at a care home. Slightly more reserved, but with more time to spare? Something more administrative is perhaps more your bag. Whatever it is though, there will be something that these guys can help you with.
Voluntary Action South West Surrey (VASWS) told us that on their books there are over 400 registered charities, all of whom will be looking for various volunteer roles throughout the year. This is in the Guildford and Waverley area alone… VASWS run local projects to enable under-represented groups to become more active in the community, so be sure to find out more at voluntaryactionsws.webeden. co.uk.
Rushmoor Volunteer Centre, who provide help and services in Aldershot, Farnborough, Cove, North Camp and the surrounding areas, work with at least 200 organisations. Much like VASWS,
these all-round good eggs support voluntary and community groups in and around the Borough of Rushmoor in recruiting volunteers. Check out more at rvs.org.uk.
Woking Association of Voluntary Service (WAVS), who take care of Woking and the surrounding areas, have a document on their website that is updated weekly – and is 50 pages long at the time of going to press. See it and find out more at wavsonline.co.uk. So you see there’s always a huge amount volunteer work out there – and that’s just three centres! Be sure to check out other centres near where you are.
Find out more about the impact of the volunteer sector at voluntaryactionsws.webeden.co.uk/no-volunteers-week.

T’is Always the Season… And we apologise bringing something vaguely Christmassy to you in August, but the time of year is often important to charities. National Volunteer Week takes place in June, so it’s easy to get involved just then and then forget about it for the year. Moreover, as we’re in the summer, it’s easy to get consider certain charities and neglect others. Jess Hogan-Smith of VASWS told us that: “August is a mixed bag. You have a lot of students on summer holidays which is good, and also corporations will show a lot of interest in volunteering for team-building purposes.” However while this is unquestionably a good thing, we mustn’t forget that it’s easier to volunteer in fair weather than the colder months. “Winter is particularly important for the elderly and those with mental health issues” says Jess. “While somewhere like the National Trust needs volunteers in the summer at its busiest.” So when those lovely properties and green spaces of Surrey are shut down for the season, just consider who else might value your time…
What if there were No Volunteers for a Week? Floods, famine and plague. OK, that’s a bit extreme but without people freely giving their time to help others, many aspects of everyday life and some key support services would be severely impacted. Voluntary Action South West Surrey asked local charitable organisations what the effect would be if they did not have their volunteers for one week. The following responses are typical: Parity for Disability Provides services for people with multiple disabilities, their families and carers. Number of volunteers: 93 Effect of No Volunteers: “The services would not exist. Without volunteers we would not be able to operate our charity shops which raise a significant part of the £60,000 we need each year to cover costs. Volunteers also ensure that the charity’s fundraising events can take place. Without an IT volunteer maintaining the day service and office computers these wouldn’t be effective.”
The Guildford Talking Newspaper Number of volunteers: 35 Effect of No Volunteers: “There would be no Talking Newspaper for our blind and visually impaired readers to listen to. This would affect about 95 people.”
Why Volunteer? To meet people and make new friends To improve your C.V. and work prospects. To be part of your community.
SATRO An educational charity working with young people in SE England providing real life experience of all aspects of the working world through a diverse and challenging range of programmes. Number of volunteers: 850 Effect of No Volunteers: “We quite simply would not be able to run these events. Volunteers help run the games and activities and share their business knowledge which is invaluable to the students. This would impact approximately 556 students per week.”
Royal Voluntary Service Meals on Wheels in Waverley Number of volunteers: 250
To learn new skills To enjoy yourself!
Effect of No Volunteers: “If an older person has no other means of getting food then they will quickly become malnourished which could lead to illness. The volunteer delivering the meal could be the only visitor a housebound elderly person gets during the day. There are about 150 recipients in Waverley of this service.” And these are just local services - if organisations simply had no volunteer help then the apocalyptic scenario creeps nearer. Landfill sites and fly-tipping in every neighbourhood, a fully privatised NHS, the Surrey Hills covered in Japanese knotweed, lives lost on waterways and at sea, more crime, lower literacy – the list is endless.

HISTORY YOU HAVE BEEN WARENNED
We’re a big, lovely community in Surrey. We know one another and there are even some well-known families in the county. Now while your average Surreyites can name a few families who are most certainly not card-carrying-membersof-the-caravan-club, back in the day the most powerful and minted family in the county were the Warenne family. While all the family had their interesting parlour games the 7th Earl of Surrey, John Warenne, was an especially interesting guy. Back in 1287 John’s dad kicked the chamber-maid’s bucket, leaving him as one of the leading Barons in the land at what was a pretty crap time during the reign of Edward II. Edward was gay in a time way before everyone’s profile picture was all rainbow and had an open-secret love affair with a chap called Piers Gaveston. Now, what’s important here is the content of Piers’ character not his sexuality: He was a d*ck. He spent all day slagging everyone down in Latin and not really playing the court game. Our boy John was the butt of a lot of Piers’ bitchiness but being a good Surrey guy he stayed out of it and drank Starbucks. Thing
was, when it came to managing the country, Edward couldn’t pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel. That coupled with his boyfriend being a complete douche meant that in around 1311 the Barons got together and demanded Ed sent his boy packing to France. Edward refused, because he was the King and **** them, that’s why. So the Barons decided to send Johnboy to grip Piers, and get him to France. Gaveston was in Scarborough Castle, and Johnboy rucked up swearing on the Bible that no harm would come of him if he just came along quietly and p*ssed off to France. Now, in those days, swearing on the Bible was absolutely sacrosanct; you made that sort of oath you NEVER went back on it. Piers relented and they headed south to London, because Piers forgot his socks and needed to pick up some bits before heading to the coast. They stopped in Deddington, Oxfordshire for a Little Chef when they bumped into the Earl of Lancaster, the Earl of Warwick and their men, nasty guys with missing teeth and sharp, pointy things hanging all over them.
with a bad taste in their mouths and hair full of Cerebro-Spinal Fluid. Meanwhile, back in court, Edward collapsed in tears and spent the next six months listen to Adele. John was fuming, so started a private war against Lancaster. As always, the feud cost hundreds of lives - no one important mind, just people like you and I - and finally ended when Lancaster was caught by a Sun reporter doing arms deals with the Scots. Bang to rights, Lancaster ended up on trial and our guy John got to have the satisfaction of sitting as a Judge at his trial. Having seen John on the judging panel, Lancaster’s diary vividly captures his true feelings:
Everyone was left with a bad taste in their mouths and hair full of Cerebro-Spinal Fluid
“Oh, cock.” John’s diary was equally frank: “Jackpot”
John was pushed to one side and held back. Lancaster gripped Gaveston, slapped him about a bit and then started hacking at him with a sword until Piers was dead. Well he was either dead or very, very calm. Understandably John went thermonuclear, Lancaster told him to “deal with, player” and everyone was left
Lancaster was introduced to the sharp end of something with an 18 certificate and our John retired to his estates. He had no heirs though, because although he had shed loads of kids, none of them were legitimate. Lad.

TALKING TO... MUNGO JERRY
By Alex D’Arcy
H
e’s the man behind one of the most instantly recognisable songs on the planet; the hot season’s equivalent to Merry Christmas. We caught up with the legend that is Mungo Jerry to talk about his anthem ‘In the Summertime’ ahead of his performance at Weyfest this September.
IT HAS BEEN 45 YEARS SINCE YOUR ANTHEM IN THE SUMMERTIME WAS RELEASED ... ARE YOU ABLE TO REMEMBER WHEN THE INCEPTION OF THAT SONG WAS MADE? WHERE WERE YOU? WHAT WERE YOU DOING ? Well I was 21 and I borrowed the money to buy this second hand guitar. I fully remember I got this tune in my head and the next day it was buzzing around and I sat down where I was working; it was in a research laboratory for Timex doing all the electronics and stuff. I had never considered being a professional singer or songwriter but I had been messing around since the age of 10 with various guitars... So I had this tune in my head (dada dada da da dada da dada) and all the words just came out. When you analyse it retrospectively, it’s been said to me it’s like a celebration of life and

after all these years, when you take every line out it’s all got a significant meaning; sometimes a double meaning and it’s gone all around the world and changed a lot of people’s lives. There’s been so many different cover versions of it in different genres of music. When I recorded it, I was playing a mixture of Woodie Guthrie, Leadbelly, rural blues, junk-band style stuff, skiffle, rockabilly - minus any drums. That wasn’t engineered. When I was working at Timex a friend of mine there, Joe Rush, played double bass and always said that he wanted to play the washboard. I think he used to play for Ken Collier and Joe used to do a lot of weekend gigs and functions. At that time I was playing in my psychedelic rock band messing around. Anyway we saw this audition in the Melody Maker advertised and the guy running the audition was an American by the name of Jimmy Miller, who went onto become the producer for Rolling Stones. At that time he was producing Jimmy Cliff and they were auditioning for a backing band for Jackie Edwards (another guy from Jamaica) who wrote ‘Keep on Running’. He had a number of hits in Jamaica and was on the Island Record Label. They wanted to bring him over here to do some gigs.
ENTERTAINMENT
up shutting the power down at 4am. And that’s how it all started. In the Summertime was written shortly after that.
AM I RIGHT IN THINKING THAT YOU USED TO LIVE IN THE FARNHAM AREA? WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HAVE OF THE AREA ? I used to live in Grayshott for many years. I had a studio there and quite a massive house that needed a lot of work. In fact in that that studio I recorded an album. One day Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac) and (the sadly departed) Vincent Crane (Atomic Rooster and Crazy World of Arthur Brown) came down and we did all this jamming, recorded it and did this weird album called ‘A Case of the Blues’. I moved from Grayshott into Farnham (originally the end of 1974). We did a lot of walking with the dogs on the commons over there and I loved it.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PAST TIME IN THE SUMMERTIME?
Gino Washington was really popular back then and was being played in all the mod clubs they were starting to get into all this soul music, Otis Reading, Wilson Pickett etc. So whenever we tried to get a gig all the promoters wanted to know was “have you got a brass section? Have you got an organ?”
I like chilling. I’ve got a little speed boat and when I get a chance I just go out and enjoy chilling. I like looking at the clouds and the sky and watching the words go by and just enjoying the scenery. It’s all about enjoying what is natural… nature!
(To meet that demand ) we were messing about and for a joke we would do this brass organ medley which was essentially a 10 minute version of ‘Uptight’ by Stevie Wonder and a few extras, maybe ‘Knock on Wood’… whatever I had in my head. So we played that for our audition and they went mad for it. So we got the job backing Jackie Edwards and we were playing all these afro-Caribbean clubs. Our drummer eventually left to join Savoy Brown and so the bass player also left.
Catch Mungo Jerry performing at
I had one gig left in my diary and Joe Rush had found out that you could still get washboards in Scotland. Joe got these two washboards brought down from Scotland and had them in the Timex lab. He told me to get the guitar out and we just started having this skiffle jam in the lab. A few of our colleagues gathered round and eventually we ended up taking the session down the pub. We thought it sounded great. We thought “what could we do?” - We needed to play this gig and we needed the money. I think it was about £30 back then which was a lot. So we played first at this gig to warm the crowd up. We did all this stomping with our feet on the floor because we didn’t have a drummer and they loved it. After the gig had finished they asked us to go back on again and they ended

The Camberley Car Show
On Saturday 22nd August the Camberley Car Show returns to the town centre, raising funds for The South West Thames Kidney Fund. And – cliché (but true) alert – it really is going to be the biggest and best one yet… If the Camberley Car Show of 2014 is anything to go by, this year is going to be a hugely popular and exciting event. Last year saw the Batmobile for crying out loud (yes, really); so how do you top that? Well if you’re as ruddy good as these guys are at putting on a show, then quite easily… If you thought that the fictitious, gadget-ridden motor belonging to a man in a black rubber suit was good (and it was), then how will this grab you – The Bloodhound. This jet and rocket powered car is designed to go at 1,000 mph, attempting to break the land speed record. And it’s entirely real… The Bloodhound’s engine produces
more than 135,000 horsepower - more than 6 times the power of all the Formula 1 cars on a starting grid put together. It’s really fast, basically. But you won’t see it move, lest you wish to see Camberley town centre become a distant memory. Make sure you don’t miss out, because this really is a rare opportunity from the geniuses of the engineering world. If that’s not sufficiently ‘petrol-heady’ enough for you, then how about the Tyrrell P34? This six-wheeled Formula One car, driven by South African Jody Scheckter in the mid-1970s, was absolutely iconic, back in those heady days when F1 was ludicrously exciting and dangerous. Come and see this
marvellous machine and baulk at the fact that it was actually allowed to be driven… These are the two biggies in terms of one-off automotive pieces, but the list of cool stuff to see really does go on. Recognisable classic cars will be positioned all along Park St. and the High Street, with Jaguar’s, Lotus’s and many more of your favourite names in the motoring industry - over 180 classic and vintage motors all told – on show. And if your preference for the motorised moving machine is for two wheels rather than four, then fear not – there will be motorbikes here, most notably (if you’re as ignorant to bikes as this scribe) the obligatory
The Camberley Car Show takes place across the town centre, between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 22nd August.

presence of the Harley Davidson. And breathe. We think it’s fair to say that even the most discerning motor show snob will push the glasses on the end of their nose and nod approvingly at the array on offer. There’s bound to be some left-field model of an obscure make that’ll warm the cockles. Anyway moving away from the machines themselves, there’s so much more to expect on the day. Edd China from Discovery Channels ‘Wheeler Dealers’ will be making an appearance, and you may recognise his distinctive mop of hair. A quintessential English eccentric, with a passion for cars, Edd is the creator of a number of extraordinary and wacky vehicles, several of which are in the Guinness Book of Records. Elsewhere, Sporting Bears will be there, offering passenger rides in luxury sports cars such as Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The Bears are a dedicated group of classic car and sports car enthusiasts with one primary aim - to raise money for children’s charities through social and touring events, and to support other charitable events. To date they’ve raised over £1million for charity - nice people. If you’re feeling generous and want to drive a mouth-watering hyper-car, then be sure to pay them a visit. The wide range of timeless cars, charitable lovelies and TV personalities will be accompanied by live music, 1940’s characters and street actors, and there will be face painting and entertainers for the wee ones. However, the Camberley Car Show isn’t only for giggles and shizzles… Fundraising for the South West Thames Kidney Fund is the order of the day, and we can scarcely think of a better charity to part with your hard-earned cash to. Cases of kidney disease are rising rapidly each year, and it can be inherited and passed down through the generations. Kidney research is the only answer to find a
prevention or a cure, so donating to the SWTKF is for a truly marvellous cause. With approximately 46,000 attendees at the 2014 Camberley Car Show, you can expect a whole heap more for this year’s event. And with land speed record chasers, six-wheeled F1 cars, TV personalities, kids fun and oh so much more, we say do not miss out on this amazing day out…

On the Go: Primal Roost, Bagshot Something primal has been stirring in sleepy Bagshot village for a while now, but this summer it has finally woken revealing a fabulous café and pantry quite unlike anything else for miles… It’s been called the Caveman diet, Palaeolithic and Primal, but for three friends from near Bagshot, the simple pleasures and extraordinary benefits of a diet freed from processed foods and stultifying grains were too good not to share, whatever you happen to call it. Nevertheless the appeal of paleo or ‘primal’ eating has grown in popularity in recent years, managing to shake off the kind of label ascribed to here today-gone tomorrow diets - namely ‘fads’- thanks to its common-sense grounding in the kind of nutrition our bodies actually require, not just what they’ve become accustomed to with modern diets.
That’s what led Jody Diton, Leisa Moss and Kirstie Prince to dream up the idea of Primal Roost, a café oasis not only for fellow paleo followers but for people curious about the lifestyle - and those simply after a great place for a coffee break. “We’ve all been paleo or primal for about two years now for various reasons,” says Jody. “Leisa’s husband is a Primal Blueprint certified trainer, one of four in the UK who has the certification from America. But it was only by chatting that we realised we were all following the same kind of lifestyle. So we became our own little network, sharing recipes, ideas and dinner parties and such. Then we had the idea to do something like a café with this paleo concept. That was September last year and here we are today.” Excitement had been building up around this strange new kind of café for several months, and when they opened Primal Roost on the 6th July, dozens of curious and hungry visitors queued for a closer look. What visitors found -as we did- when they walk through Roost’s doors is a bright, modern café that blurs that trendy line between chic and upcycled with ease. The heady aroma of specialist organic coffee from Beanberry hits you immediately followed by the sight of a counter festooned with all kinds of freshly
made goodies like salads, soups, cakes, muffins and brownies. As a pantry, Roost’s neat scaffold and timber shelves hold a dizzying variety of health foods with prominent organic, paleo and gluten free brands like Clearspring, Infinity Foods and Gnaw on Nature offering store cupboard essentials like seeds, flours, nuts and delicious treats like natural chocolate and fruit bars. There isn’t a shred of processed sugar or cereal grains to be found at Roost, but the ladies’ goal was always to make their shop a place to transition easily into a healthier lifestyle. “It would have been a gamble if we’d gone hardcore paleo - no grains, no dairy, no salt - everyone would have walked past. So we went primal ‘inspired’, where we have amazing specialty craft organic coffee, organic tea from Devon. So we at least have a very nice coffee shop but then they’ll see what else we have to offer and be inspired to explore further.” With a full launch next month, Primal Roost are buzzing with ideas for how to turn their groovy coffee shop and pantry into a hub for the health conscious - or anyone after a great cup of coffee.
Primal Roost are at 53 High Street, Bagshot. Visit primalroost.com or call 01276 850007 for more information.

But for a lighter, seasonal alternative, these summer kebabs offer mouth-watering flavours and a big hit of colour - perfect for entertaining while the sun’s shining…

National Citizen Service
UK charity The Challenge provides young adults with key life skills courtesy of this brilliant programme… Even in an area as fortunate and affluent as Surrey, young adults have some notable hurdles to jump. With education finishing and adulthood on the horizon, it can be a struggle to adapt to the way the world changes. Luckily programmes such as the National Citizen Service is there to help young people gain these key work and life skills. The programme – for young people aged 15 to 17 – is a huge opportunity for personal growth. NCS brings young people together from all different backgrounds in a common purpose and by offering new experiences. It gives them the chance to take on new challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. This helps discover their own talents and realise their potential whilst having fun. One Poll study in April 2015 revealed that many teachers believe young people who try something new during the holidays return to school or college with a more positive and focused attitude for the next academic year. So the NCS is undoubtedly a wonderful way to engage youngsters.
But how does it work? NCS takes place outside of term time in spring, summer and autumn – each one is a little different but equally amazing. There are plenty of dates to choose from so there’s nothing standing in between you and the awesomeness of NCS.
PHASE 1: ADVENTURE In your first week you’ll live with your team at an outdoor activity centre, getting to know each other and experiencing the freedom of being away from home with new friends. So, once you’ve decided on the programme for you, you’ll be placed in a group of 12-15 amazing people and the best thing about NCS is that these will be people you’d never have met before – people that could change your life, or you could change theirs. In this week you’ll get the chance to take part in adrenalinefuelled activities with your team mates like: rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and archery.
PHASE 2: THE FUTURE Not only will you be learning to cook for yourselves (think roast dinners, not beans on toast!), but you’ll also learn some huge life skills that make for a killer CV. You could find yourself meeting organisations and important people from your local community, whilst learning about the issues facing them, as well as developing new personal skills (teamwork, leadership and communication). You could also find out more about skills you have a passion for, such as photography, editing, football coaching or even how to set up your own business!
PHASE 3: MAKING A DIFFERENCE Now you get the chance to put all the skills and experiences you’ve learnt into practice as a team agreeing on a social action project that will really make a mark on your local community. You and your team have the power to change the world around you given the respect, tools and opportunities to do so. This is your chance to be part of something amazing - plan your own project, fundraise for it and make it happen! Go out there and be awesome together.
PHASE 4: GRADUATION Once you’ve completed the programme, you’re now part of the bigger NCS family. National Citizen Service grads have the chance to attend some of the greatest shows and events going and they’ll be constantly developing amazing ways to keep you involved with them, your community & with all of their fantastic partners. We forgot to mention at the end of each programme they’ll throw you a big party to celebrate everything you’ve achieved too. Not only will you be a completely different person, but you’ll have made a huge network of amazing friends for life and done something truly inspirational in your community.
For a summer of huge developmental growth, and to find out more, visit

TEST DUMMY: Kushido
I know what you’re thinking:
What the heck is Kushido? I thought the same when I was sent down to Deepcut Village Centre, Camberley, to try it out. Naturally I did a little research so I could have some idea what I was in for.
So, here it goes: Kushido’s a traditional form of Karate that combines both power and speed to create a self-defence system for when you’re under serious threat or you want to show off. Through regular training, Kushido karate helps you to feel more balanced in life, to be more selfconfident and to achieve your goals. It is particularly beneficial to children by helping them to become less aggressive, to concentrate better and for longer, to develop and improve their feeling of self-esteem and to respect themselves and others. The practice of Kushido karate has no upper age limit and is equally good for both sexes. The minimum age is 5 years old and every single person, prepared to invest time and effort, can improve on many
different levels that will in turn help them to master the challenges of daily life more successfully. Got that? Good. I practiced karate for a number of years in my youth, however, after failing my very first kata - the detailed choreographed patterns of movement practised either solo or in pairs – I quit. I was pretty rubbish by all accounts, according to my dad. Upon my arrival at the Deepcut Centre, I was introduced to our leader, Sensei Dave, plus three other classmates who had considerable Kushido experience. Me, it was my first time. I was a Kushido virgin about to juice my Kushido cherry. After a brisk warm-up, we began a series of blocks, punches, blockpunches, block-block-punches and kicks. Despite my punches being
SPORT
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport
like a small child’s, it’s all about technique to begin with. We then began to combine the punches, kicks and blocks with movement – a combination I struggled with. Sensei Dave took me to one side and gave me a tutorial where he walked me through each move. We then paired up. I was paired with a chap called Rob. Rob was clearly six or seven years my youth, but was around four foot taller than me and held better facial hair. Regardless, we locked eyes and on Sensei Dave’s command, we pounced. I was told to try and land a punch on Rob’s jaw. A few hesitant seconds passed and I swung. Rob, with his cat-like reflexes, blocked my fist and, in the blink of an eye, his was an inch away from my sweaty, nervous face
– this was a lot harder than it looked. We continued in the same manner for another fifteen to twenty minutes, but with kicks and punchkick combinations. Again, technique was key, especially on my maiden session. As the session drew to a close, we were given our final instructions. We were to take everything we had learnt that lesson and perform what is known as a Kata (see above definition). Luckily, as if he knew of my childhood kata nightmare, Sensei whispered: “Just copy everyone else”. So I did. Terribly, might I add. After ten minutes of pretending I knew what I was doing, my two colleagues laughing hysterically at me from the corner of the room and looking like the Karate Kid after a crate of Special Brew, it was over. I
had completed a session of Kushido. Alive and well. I thanked Sensei Dave for his kind words and bid farewell to my fellow Kushido-ers. On the journey home I felt empowered, I felt energised and I felt safe. I had erased my childhood fears and overcome a kata. My dad would’ve been proud.
If you fancy getting involved in this Japanese mayhem, or are simply keen for an unorthodox, but affective, form of exercise, then visit: www.kushido.co.uk and try it for yourself.

SPORTS NEWS WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH
Surrey Scorchers News ormer Guildford and Surrey Heat coach Creon Raftopoulos will lead the brand new Surrey Scorchers team, replacing Surrey United, in the British Basketball League (BBL)...
F
The Zimbabwean began his first season in the BBL in 2010 with Guildford Heat, taking his side on three consecutive play-off runs. His final season in charge saw Raftopoulos secure his best BBL finish to take, including a Championship Play-off semi-final after finishing 4th during the regular campaign and Cup and Trophy quarter-final appearances. Creon returns to the BBL after a two season hiatus, in which time he turned his attentions to community
development including playing a role including the introduction of Walking Basketball around the country. Following his signing, Raftopoulos said: “I am really excited to take up this position with Surrey Scorchers and get back to coaching in the BBL.
“I am already in contact with a number of potential players who I am keen to get on court and I am hoping to have a full squad together soon to begin pre-season training and be ready for the start of the 2015/16 season in September.”
“We’ve got some great plans to develop a club built around community engagement that is both successful and sustainable, something that Surrey has been crying out for for a long time.
In a nod to Surrey’s illustrious basketball history, Surrey Scorchers will usher in a new dawn for professional basketball in the county.
“I have been fortunate to cover a number of BBL games as a colour commentator for BBLTV, which has kept me in touch with all the teams’ style of play.
SURREY SPORTIVE II 16th August, Surrey Sports Park, Guildford
The brand change takes place ahead of the 2015/16 BBL season and encompasses a new identity, logo, kit, website and social media channels.
Join the second ever Guildford Cycle Sportive for a fully supported, noncompetitive road cycle in support of charity Dreams Come True, at Surrey Sports Park mid-August. Choose between a distance of 75, 65 or 41 miles, rolling and winding your way through and over the Surrey Hills.
Prepare for some fierce climbing and, as a little cycling treat, loads of cake. All routes will have feed stations on route with homemade cake at each, as well as mobile bike mechanics for those unforeseen punctures or issues, plus roaming first aid should you need it.

MEDALS GALORE FOR SURREY HEATH YOUNG GUNS Surrey Heath’s youngsters put in a stellar performance at the P&G Surrey Youth Games this weekend to win eight sets of medals and finish fifth in the overall standings, improving on last year’s position of eighth. Surrey Heath comprised 22 teams competing in 14 different sports against the ten other boroughs and districts of Surrey. For many of the young people involved, this was their first experience of playing sport at a competitive level outside of school.
Telectronics Lakeside Classic (Darts) 4th September, Frimley Green, Lakeside
The Judo team brought home gold in no less than three of the four available competitions. There were also silver medals in Boxing and Boys’ Hockey, with bronze medals achieved in both Tennis and Touch Tennis.
Some of the top stars of world darts will clash at the Telectronics Lakeside Classic on Friday 4 September 2015. The unique event will see players from both the PDC and BDO codes go head to head at the home of darts. The headline showdown will feature the PDC world number one Michael van Gerwen do battle with reigning Lakeside World Champion Scott Mitchell.
A highlight of the weekend came courtesy of Boccia, an inclusive sport aimed at players with physical impairments and/or learning difficulties. 2015 represented Surrey Heath’s first ever entry into the event, and a hotly contested final resulted in an unexpected but much deserved silver medal.
Australian ace Simon Whitlock will take on three-time World Champion Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams in another exciting clash. Dutchman Vincent van der Voort is up against Darryl Fitton, while Tony O’Shea will face Steve Beaton, who returns to us 19 years after winning the World Championship here at Lakeside. Plus, darts legend Bobby George will also be making a cameo appearance.

BETTER BUSINESS FOR ALL Better Business for All (BBfA) Surrey has been set up to help businesses easily access support from regulators. It has also been established for regulators to understand how it feels to be regulated in Surrey and determine the support required and how best the support and advice can be delivered. The programme that brings together businesses and regulators – often for the first time – to consider and change how local regulation is delivered and received. It involves the creation of groups in specific areas that then shape the way support is
provided to businesses by local regulators. This initiative is available across all Surrey boroughs and means you can trust that your local regulators are keen to understand your business, what you are trying to achieve and how they can support you to be compliant with the law in doing this.

Establishing CV

Inspire Business of the Year Award, Inspire Entrepreneur of the Year, The Thames Valley Business Awards SME of the Year, Deloitte UK Technology Fast 50 Award – the list is long and prestigious. So it’s a good idea to attend a guest speech by Lee and hear his story, where you will be inspired, enthused and informed.
