As we gear up to kick off a brand-spanking new year, I want you to take a moment to do a 'Mirror Check.' That’s right, I’m talking about making YOU a priority in the year ahead and owning up to your own walk in life. It’s time to step into 2024 like the absolute winner you are and define your own version of love and happiness, on your own terms.

Listen up, y’all. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and forget to put ourselves first. But this year, I want you to flip the script and put yourself at the top of your to-do list. You deserve all the love, joy, and happiness that this world has to offer, and it all starts with making a conscious decision to prioritize yourself.

Now, when it comes to love and happiness, I’m here to tell you that there ain’t no one-size-fits-all definition. Nah, honey, you get to write your own dang rulebook! Whether it’s finding a partner who lifts you up and celebrates your fabulousness, or basking in the glow of self-love and care, it’s about defining what sets your soul on fire and going after it with all you’ve got.

So, here’s the deal; I want you to set a goal, right here, right now, to chase after your unique brand of love and happiness each and every day. It might be taking time for some self-care, pursuing a passion that sets your spirit free, or surrounding yourself with folks who make you feel like the royalty you are. Whatever it is, promise me you’ll make it a priority.

And let’s keep it real, my beautiful people: we’ve got a legacy of resilience and strength running through our veins, and that’s something to celebrate. So, as we step into the new year, let’s carry that power with us and let it fuel our pursuit of love and happiness. It’s time to show the world just how fiercely we can love ourselves and each other.

So, go on and take the reins, my loves. Set your intentions, chase your dreams, and make 2024 your year to shine. You’ve got this, and I’m right here cheering you on every step of the way.

Here’s to a year filled with love, happiness, and unapologetic self-love. Let’s do this!

With love and sass, LaTonya MeChelle

I was recently given this assignment, and initially, this was an easy task until I sat at my desk with a pen and pad. The first ten flew effortlessly, but eleven, twelve, and beyond stuck me. Because for the longest I believed this fairytale that the man was supposed to come and rescue me and provide this sense of peace. Well, that is not entirely true because to want peace, one must possess that same peace within self that they seek in a mate.

One has to be very honest with oneself. If you are broken, is it fair to want a complete mate when you are not there? See, a lot of times when this subject arises, people get defensive. They are quick to start judging, but the truth is that if people would take the time to heal whatever has hurt them or plagued them in the sunken place of failed relationships. Their reality is men and women are actively jumping from person to person to fill a void that will only come when you face the demon head-on and address it, but, most importantly, heal from it- hurt people HURT people, and long as people are pretending the pain does not exist, is selfish and continues to perpetuate the toxic behavior.

You must be realistic and realize that a relationship has ups and downs No relationship is perfect; DESPITE what social media shows you. Know that being let down will happen, but instead of using it to hold a grudge, use it to learn more about your partner. This is IMPORTANT, especially for long-distance relationships, because not seeing your partner can create tension, so turn that frown upside down. A positive attitude during such difficult times leads to happier relationships.

When you refer to you and your partner as "we," you subconsciously consider both of you a single entity. Refrain from referring to the relationship as you or I but instead say we. This simple word enhances bonding and trust in a big way –even if your partner is not physically around. Your partner wants to feel safe and secure, and hearing you use words like us/we build a stronger bond.

Relationships come with obligations, and with that- Be aware of and fulfill them, as this shows consistency and will make your partner happy. At the same time, ensure you're not sacrificing your private space; you must be satisfied, too. Talk about it with your partner if you're uncomfortable doing some things.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 9

Teresa B: We are excited to interview today, thank you for being with us. But tell us a little bit about yourself.

Kalonda Kay: I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. I was born into the entertainment world through my grandmother doing a lot in the city and all over the country as far as the black media coalition. I had been singing since early on, but I started in Opera as early as age, I believe, five or six. I was too young to even remember, but I was singing at the Fox Theater every year for the famous play The Nutcracker. I’ve also always danced. Also, my mom kept me heavily involved in everything entertainment.

Teresa B: How did you start singing?

Kalonda Kay: It’s in my blood and so now I am a national recording artist. I also have my DJ show here on a local radio station as well.

Teresa B: That’s a lot going on, good stuff. So how long have you been acting?

Kalonda Kay: So, acting is my new venture. I started in theater. I would say since 2011. I’ve done a lot of theater stage plays but my first film was last year with Carl Anthony Payne II. That was my first time doing a movie/film next to a celebrity. So, you ought to know I was sweating. lol

Teresa B: Yes. Yes. I can only imagine.

Kalonda Kay: Yeah, that was new for me. But I received a lot of great feedback, A lot of people said this can't be your first time. I’m just blessed I guess to house a lot of different talents that I didn’t even know that I had within myself as well. So, acting is new, but I am continuing by taking classes with Miss Tracy Britain who has worked with many major, celebrity actors and actresses. She’s produced a lot of major television shows and movies. And so, I’ve been working with her one-on-one for the last few months. I’m excited about what’s next for me in the world.

Teresa B: Okay, Awesome Which people are books have you had the most influence on your career? And why?

Kalonda Kay: I would say right now, I must acknowledge my producer Joe Capo Kent. He has worked with a lot of amazing individuals and he’s a three-time Grammy nominated. he is amazing, but he has not only been my producer, he’s poured into me and guided me. Sometimes that’s all you need someone to say, “Hey, I got this resource”, “Hey this is how you do this”. He has truly been influential. Every artist that I meet, everybody I meet in interviews, and everyone that I get an opportunity to talk to are influential. I ask questions, I dig and if you put me in front of a face, I’m like, “Can you tell me or can you give me some insights?” So, I am in no way shape, or form shy to ask those who come before me. I don't mind asking, “How can I be a great artist?”, “How can I be amazing?”. So, while on this journey, I must acknowledge my producer who has truly, truly helped me along the way and also my publicist. Without those two, I wouldn't know what to do.

Teresa B: Right. Your publicist is amazing. I love her. Kalonda Kay: Yeah. She is.

Teresa B: In your opinion, what would you say is the number one key to success?

Kalonda Kay: The number one key to success I would say is to keep going. There’s gonna be moments where it seems impossible. It seems hard. It’s frustrating. You don’t see the results. You think you're supposed to see, and you don’t even know how to get to this place that you’re trying to go. Keep going because there’s a breakthrough, and somewhere when you have your own goals, you can accomplish those goals. You’ll see it. So, you will never get there if you quit. We shouldn't look at things that don’t work out as a failure. We should look at them as an opportunity to redo, regenerate, revive, and then do it better.

Teresa B: Talk about the biggest failure you had what did you learn from it?

Kalonda Kay: Biggest failure? That’s hard because I don’t look at things that don’t work out as a failure. People often say “Girl, when are you ever sad or down or out because you walk around like this every day?” I look at things that don’t go the way that I thought it could go or should go as a moment to retry it. It’s a moment of opportunity and so for me, I face many challenges as far as running into wrong people who may have said they know how to do this. Trusting and having high expectations for individuals has always been my thing because I’m a person of unity. I’m a person of love. I’m a person of honesty. And sometimes my expectations get in the way of what is reality with people. But, I would have to look back and say that my most challenging moment is having high expectations for individuals when they are truly not worthy any of that.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 10

Teresa B.: What does a typical day in your week look like?

Kalonda Kay: I am a business owner, too. I own six businesses. I sat down and had to go through everything yesterday. I had a meeting with a financial wealth planner because my goal is to be a millionaire. That part of what I do every day… I get up and I work as early as five am. I don’t sleep late. It doesn’t matter what time I go to sleep. I’m up lively with my cup of coffee. I am working on the computer while working on one business at a time. And then once I’m done, I venture into my radio stuff. I am a heavy planner and I like being organized as best as I can. Last-minute things do not sit well with me. I use my calendar for everything. And so that is my typical day. I’m working until it’s time to go to bed. And sometimes I’m working in bed with my laptop on my lap.

Teresa B: What are some non-entertainment-related things or experiences that have helped you become a better person in the entertainment industry?

Kalonda Kay: Wow, I can say that having a great job in administrative work helped and shaped my organizational skills. I worked in Social Services for eight years. Working in that field has truly opened my eyes to what I didn’t want for my life. It helped me see the turmoil, the suffering, and the struggle. I wanted to create an Avenue for myself in multiple ways. I wanted to live my dreams, I didn’t want to live with regrets. I would often see people come in and choose the wrong career or choose the wrong life, which let them back to where they’re in the office asking for help. So for me, that was something I never wanted to do. That truly helped shape my direction.

Teresa B: I’m about positivity. So, this is doing it for me. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

Kalonda Kay: My career has been the most successful it has ever been and I am grateful. I am at the most celebratory moment of my life at age 40 and the mother of two wonderful children. It is possible to do everything that you want to do. I just say there’s no limit. I think like a giraffe instead of a turtle. To be able to see the stars and be able to look up and see over the trees, that’s how I think. I just hope that everyone else thinks that way as well. I hope that I continue to be a light in a beacon for those who think that it’s not possible.

Teresa B: How can we reach you?

Kalonda Kay: Yes, I can be reached at kalonda kay.com. That is my website. But I am on all social media streaming platforms at Kalonda Kay Instagram, and Facebook, I’m building on my TikTok. You can also reach me at the Radio mix show that is on YouTube, and Facebook.

You can email me at RadioRiotmixshow@Gmail.com and that’s the same for kalondaKayENT@gmail.com.

Sinclair THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 12 Screenwriter, Producer, Director, Author, and Publisher Screenwriter, Producer, Director, Author, and Publisher
Shaun

"I don't like to look at the score when I'm still playing the game."

Shaun Sinclair began his entertainment journey when he penned his first novel, "Street Rap." The book was largely based on his life, and he used his real experiences to add unparalleled authenticity to the story. This would become his trademark writing style. He wrote ten more bestselling novels and secured a book deal with Kensington Publishing. Naturally, Mr. Sinclair turned his sights to film. He founded his production company, Pen 2 Pen Multimedia in 2019 and quickly wrote, produced, and directed his first film, "The Setup". Next, he produced a documentary about his life, "Behind the Pen." Mr. Sinclair went on to produce and direct the feature film, "A Grandmother's Faith." Shaun Sinclair has several films in production.

THS: A black man who can write and express himself is very powerful. What does that power mean for you?

SHAUN SINCLAIR: It means responsibility. With great power comes great responsibility. So it means responsibility, above all. And by that, I mean having a responsibility. Number one, tell true stories of what the black man experiences. Black man and woman are together and my people, but I'm a black man first. And in America, we have to be able to make a distinction between us and everyone else, unfortunately. So, my responsibility is to utilize that justification positively.

THS: What intrigues you the most about writing and storytelling?

SHAUN SINCLAIR: The ability to tell our stories, because our real stories often aren't brought to the forefront in this culture. They have many black stories written by people other than the people they're talking about. And so, it has an unrealistic viewpoint or, you know, slant on it, I should say, for me, when I'm writing, I'm trying to be authentic to one era in which we live and authentic to ourselves.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 13 Y

THS: Now, you just appeared in your first Stage Play. Talk a little bit about that experience of playing Issac Hayes. What were these moments like for you as you entered the acting world?

SHAUN SINCLAIR: So, it's crazy. Because I just acted in a play where I played Issac Hayes, that was my first time doing a stage play. But of course, I acted in the film Setup, and I also acted in the film Fracture, which comes out next month. First, for the stage play, I enjoyed that experience because I have a background in doing music. I used to be a rapper, and when you perform on a stage, there is a feeling like no other. Whenever the crowd loves what you're doing, and you're feeding off the energy of the crowd, when I put the mic down and moved on to different things in life. I've always been looking for something that can give me the same feeling, and nothing has been able to come close to it until now. When we did the stage play at the Lorain, here in Atlanta, I thoroughly enjoyed it because stageplay-acting differs from movieacting. You have to get stageplay-acting right because you only got one shot. So the pressure of that is exhilarating. I'm the kind of person who excels under pressure. So, just being able to have that type of experience on the stage and then have your cast mates to have your back and just a whole different experience, the camaraderie, the family, I love it. And it looks like we're bringing again in

THS: Pen2Pen Multimedia, let's talk a little bit about that.

SHAUN SINCLAIR: Pen2Pen Multimedia is my baby, the parent company of my vision. I have a few Pen2Pen Films and Pen2Pen Publishing, all under a Pen2Pen Multimedia umbrella. We founded the company initially to do books, movies, and music. And it's so funny, because when I first started the company Film, everything I'm doing right now was always the vision, even though I initially started by putting my books out. So, it's just a maturation process for the whole company. As a Publishing company, we've published well over 100 books at this point, closer to 120 books for other authors, not including the 18 I've put out myself. So we put our foot in that space, and then a couple of years ago, we jumped into the film. When we dabbled into film for the first time, we came out with The Setup, some documentaries, and some other films. But I'm shifting the focus primarily to films and the soundtracks behind them. So, everything has come full circle. I started Pen2Pen Multimedia as a book, film, and music company. I took a lot of time building it from the book standpoint, so I'm shifting the focus to movies for the next year or two. The same thing we did in the book space we're about to do in the film space. I will still have books, but my original vision was to have a movie component with every book I put out. I have The Setup book coming in 2024, and we just wrapped up the film Sex Mogal, based on one of my book series.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 14

THS: Budding authors sometimes face many challenges that can be overwhelming and sometimes complex, due to not understanding the business side of books. What advice do you have for any aspiring creators?

SHAUN SINCLAIR: I would advise them to know there's a book business. So, once you finish writing your book, you must ensure your business is in order. And want to stop and listen to everybody who hasn't done what you've done or what you're trying to do. The main thing is to focus on your book, write the best book you can put out, and then worry about the book business. You want to transition your mind from the books to the book business.

THS: You're a screenwriter, producer, director, author, and publisher. You've done music and acting. What is next for Shaun Sinclair and Pen2Pen Multimedia?

Shaun Sinclair: I want to maximize the film space. I have content for days, with 18 published books that must be on the big screen. I just wrapped the first movie based on one of my books. The thing about it is that we all have to understand our why. And my why for being in a space is that I want to educate and entertain our people. As an author, I've sold over a million books. While that's great, and I appreciate all my readers, I understand some of our population will never read a book, but they will watch TV and go to the movies. So I will do the same thing, but just the movie space. Put more movies out and perfect that craft, and I will become the best director of my generation.

Whew Chile It’s Tea-time! Is Diddy Done?

My how the mighty have fallen Mr Diddy or Sean Combs has been hit with multiple lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault. Several people have come forward accusing the billionaire Hip Hop Mogul of taking advantage of them. His former girlfriend, Cassie, filed a 30-million-dollar lawsuit against him, alleging that he did some of the vilest, and disgusting sexual things to her. The lawsuit included her being forced to have sex with other men in front of him. She also accused him of being physically and verbally abusive to her. Diddy quickly settled out of court with Cassie for an undisclosed amount. As a result of these allegations, Diddy has lost several partnerships. Remember Sean John? Well say goodbye because Macy’s is no longer selling the brand in their stores. Diddy has also been asked to resign from being the chairman of Revolt Media. He has also lost all his partnerships with liquor companies and charter schools. SHELBY LEIGH

Interviewed

by Kisha Green

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 17

ACTING AT ITS FINEST

Tubi shows a diverse assortment of movies with people of color from all over the world and has become the home to many actors and actresses who have become fan favorites, such as Shelby Leigh, Jamal Woolard, Kamal Smith, Mena Monroe, Kaamal Hasaun, Crystal the Doll, and Demaris Harvey. These once-unknown faces have become very familiar, and viewers will agree that if Tubi movies do not star those above mentioned, they must not be good movies.

Introducing Shelby Leigh...

KG: What attracted you to begin a career in acting?

SL: I always was into performing arts; growing up, I didn’t focus on acting until I went away to college. That made me decide I wanted to pursue it.

KG: Tubi was already a streaming platform, but over the last 18 months, there has been a massive influx in black cinema; how has that helped you?

SL: It has helped so much with connecting the dots. It is reaching and networking with more like-minded individuals to create more consistently.

KG: Have you progressed in your acting career as you have expected thus far?

SL: I’ve been acting since 2014, and at this moment, I feel progression, but I know I still have a long way to go. But I’m thankful for where I am now.

KG: Have you ever had to turn down a role? If so, why? Any regrets?

SL: of course. Sometimes, some scripts or roles may not be for you. Maybe it was due to timing, or you couldn’t see yourself fully being immersed in the character. If I take on a role, I want to give my 100%; if I can’t, I won’t.

KG: What is your proudest moment thus far?

SL: It is pretty simple: just being on this journey. It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to do this.

KG: Do you believe an actor needs to go to acting school, or is there such a thing as a natural talent?

SL: I believe in natural talent because some people just got it. But everyone should always learn. You can never know enough. So I’ll always say class/school is necessary.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 18

KG: What advice would you give a new person starting?

SL: you have to believe in yourself because nobody will do it for you. And if you’re serious about this, stand firm in your beliefs because this industry, even at the independent level, is no joke.

KG: What are your long-term goals?

SL: To produce films about black love. We see a lot of heartbreak, but what about some healthy relationships? I want to create and direct my films.

KG: Speaking of which, you recently stepped behind the camera to make a film that involved domestic violence; this is often a taboo topic. Did you have any reservations about releasing this film?

SL: No, I don’t; it’s a taboo topic; however, these types of films should be seen. Because it’s okay to ask for help, some people need assistance but don’t know how to get it.

KG: What are you currently working on?

CH: I am preparing for my next lead role for “In Love with a Stripper” by Rockey Black and Kamal Smith.

KG: For movies starring Shelby Leigh, check out How long have you been involved in the music industry/Entertainment?

SH: I have been involved in the music industry and entertainment since 2012. It has been a fulfilling journey that has allowed me to gain valuable experience and knowledge in this field.

HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 24

It’s all about the food. And we know that food is what brings people together.

I was invited to dinner for the holidays by Film Producer and founder of Carolina Film Network, Andrew Gadjadar, who also is a Chef. He and Faith Creech welcomed me into their home with open arms. As I arrived in Columbia, South Carolina from a two-hour drive out of Travelers Rest, I walked into the kitchen seeing a display of two different large Chatauree boards of various types of cheese and meats that were brought in to nibble on until the meal was ready to eat. Andrew's sister Sriracha Syreeta, had them nicely displayed and I was ready to sample.

The aroma of the holiday smell was in the air. Of course, there was the traditional mac and cheese and homemade rolls with desserts. But because Andrew knew I was a food blogger, he plated me his specialties as he prepared.

The first course was an appetizer sampler. Rare chuck roast drizzled with a balsamic flavor on a bed of cream cheese and crackers, with a side of Thai pickled carrots and caviar spread. I liked it a lot and the flavors mixed well with my red wine.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 25

But I don't think my friend Donna liked it. (laugh out loud) She was so cute, loving her husband of many years and he was returning the affection back. It was a beautiful sight to see so I had to snap a picture!

Andrew really outdid himself with the dishes he prepared. We had smoked turkey and roasted turkey that were both marinated in a brine for 48 hours, chicken biryani, curry mung beans, more Thai pickled carrots and daikon, smoked pork shank collards, more smoked mid-rare chuck roast, celery root purée, and balsamic glaze.

I’ve never had such a variety of flavors from different cultures served at Thanksgiving. Not only was the food a big hit, but so were the people. While Andrew cooked and prepared the food, he had different styles of music playing to keep an upbeat atmosphere. The tasty flavors of each item were amazing and one of the guests made homemade yeast rolls that were astounding. Holidays are very challenging for me. However, I always choose to see the best in my situation and get myself into rooms to meet and spend quality time with people. Thanksgiving 2023 was like no other Thanksgiving that I’ve ever experienced

There was singing, eating, and laughing, and it felt so good to be surrounded by so many people of different backgrounds with joy in their hearts. I didn’t go to sleep until 6 am from talking and playing poker all night. I was grateful for Andrew and Faith letting me stay in their home. And I don’t regret losing sleep because lasting memories were created.

Diversity is power. I always say, “Rise up and catch it.” And this is what we need more of in our lives. #Columbia #SouthCarolina, #Thanksgiving2023 #GoodTimes. #Memories #AGreatDay.

Three years ago, I met “Andre,” Andrew Gajadhar at the Carolina Film Festival Event at Spotlight Cinemas in Columbia, SC. Who would have thought we would reunite again to work on set with a movie premiere and end up breaking bread together at Thanksgiving?

Here are a few TikTok memories to last a lifetime.

The Wrong Catch

Put down your fishing pole and join Greyson for a wild ride as he takes an edgy approach to warn men about the potential danger of choosing the wrong mate In this fourth installment of the CATCH Series, Greyson hosts his first conference for men, introducing analogies describing female characters as insects, animals, and even a toy

Through these captivating stories, Greyson presents women who fake the qualities of a good wife while dating, only to reveal the true essence of their hearts after the men marry them. He replaces the male fish characters from books 1 & 2 with female characters, such as the Black Widow, a spider who kills her husband after getting what she wants, and the Queen Bee, who births many children but expects helpers to care for them and the household

Then, meet the “Narc” Women: The Firefly, ‘Femme Fatale,’ the Vampire Bat, the People Pleaser, and the Mother. The final three are the Antelope, who is promiscuous and mates several times a day with several males; the Hyena, who isn’t laughing; she is a loud, complaining leader of the clan who barks orders; and the Church Doll, once a church toy for kids, now a woman groomed to be used in her service to the church leader

In these stories, Greyson warns the men of the same fourletter word described in over 50 scriptures: F-O-O-L! He provides the men with in-depth details of foolish women who are ill-prepared, immoral, selfish, reckless, idle, hate wisdom, negligent, bad managers, waste, does evil, do not love God, and bring ruin to the household

With strategies to help the men find the right wife, The WRONG CATCH - She’ll Tear Down the House will have readers on the edge of their seats If you enjoyed other books in The CATCH Series, such as the first and third installments, you’ll surely love this one.

The Heatseekers Magazine Exclusive Interview THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 31 KURTIS BLOW

Kurtis Blow is s legendary icon in the rap industry. He is best known for the songs “The Breaks”, “The Christmas Song”, and “Basketball”. He is a singer, songwriter, public speaker, and record/film producer. He has released over 17 albums.

The Heat Seekers Magazine: So tell us, how did it all start?

Kurtis Blow: It started with the inspiration and the motivation from my mom. I was her assistant and she was a lover of music so I became her DJ at about 7 or 8 years old. Then I became the DJ for the family on birthdays and holidays. Every time our neighbors would come over on the weekends we would play cards, party and have a good time. I used to walk around the house with a pen and a pad writing everyone’s song request. My mom bought a component set in 1969 which included a TV, radio and tape player, and turn table all in one. I was fascinated by the process and I used to just stare and watch the component set. My mom was very popular and a great dancer in the neighborhood and all around Harlem. Right down the hill was the Cotton Club so all of that love for music and dancing became a part of my life as well as listening to the stories from my mom. Her name was Mini and they called her “Skinny Mini” and they would ask her to dance. She would throw all of us (my siblings) out there to dance. I became a break dancer in 72, and 73 and started competing. I got my record deal in 1979 being one of the first artists to get a major label. I had the 4th record released from a rapper. King Tim III(personality jock) released by the Mac on spring records subsidiary of Polygram, Rappers Delight, spoony G, mercery poly gram records with Christmas rap was my song. I had writers (JB Moore-producer of my 1st 5 songs as well as Robert Fore. They wanted to have a song that would be an annual classic. I was 20 years old and excited to have a record deal at that time. I was grateful and excited and just overjoyed to be in that position.

THS: What was one of our favorite locations to perform?

THS: How do you feel about your music impacting so many people?

KB: Well I think it’s a good thing. I am grateful and honored. It’s a miracle and a blessing. I feel I was chosen by God. To God be the Glory. I want to shout out to all the DJs and music directors for playing my Christmas rap and supporting my legacy. That is one of the biggest parts of my legacy and it is an annual classic. Being in the top 10 to be on the air and I am forever grateful.

THS: What do you believe set yourself apart back then from other artists?

KB: I was a college student and that helped to gain an advantage when others didn’t. I took the culture into the classroom and the classroom into the culture. I majored in communications and I was a speech broadcasting major. CCNY in Harlem which was the party school. I was part of City College force-Jet Eye nights and I was their DJ. I got my job over at Charles Gallery because of my college crew and Russell Simmons was part of that top party crew in the city. The communication and the way I speak is like rap. Speeches were made into correlation and added to my music. Motivating your audience and using extemporaneous speech (which is off the cuff not prepared or not written) is like a freestyle rap so I put all these analogies and telling these stories and imagery visions that you can instill into the people. It was very important to storytelling. I put it together and the technical aspects of the microphone, delivery, volume and tone all play a part in your oratory and became the bases of my 1st 5 albums.Hip Hop is so malleable and you can shape it into any form. I had rock and roll and country on my albums and I was an advent support of this fusion which gave me the advantage and made me different. I used real drums and music in the studio. Another notable big difference is I never used profanity in over 240 rap songs.

KB: The hotel diplomat, The Garage and up in the Bronx at the Disco Fever, and a club out in Queens called Night Fever Disco. I started with Russel Simmons in 1977-1979 and I was the DJ for that club. Smalls Paradise I was the main DJ. They had a lot of entertainers such as the Temptations, Stephenie Mills, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Stevie Wonder. I was the DJ playing music between the shows. That was incredible. I was a college student and working at a distinguished club owned by Wilt Chamberlain. So that was my favorite. Shout out to Melba Moore and Charles Huggins who helped get me into Charles Gallery. They bought Wilt’s Smalls Paradise. t.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 32

TTHS: How do you stay grounded and focused during your music career?

KB: That’s very difficult and my biggest concern or issue is I don’t know how to manage my time. We are taught in education to balance our minds and this is what we are taught. But it’s very difficult.

THS: What advice would you give inspiring artists?

KB: I used to say a long time ago…don’t give away your day job. It was a joke but I’m serious because you got to have something to fall back on. Another thing is education, education, education. That gave me an advantage and it can give you an advantage as well. Do the research and take that dream into the classroom. Learn everything within that subject and within that history. Find successful people that are doing what you want to do and you can follow their steps to achieve that success.

THS: What are your latest projects and plans for your career?

KB: I had a heart transplant 2 years ago. And every day above ground is a good day. I thank God we all woke up. So I am just happy and overjoyed to be alive. I can‘t fix all the things I did back in my life. I am currently in the United Coalition for Humanity with 12 board members. From criminal justice to health and wellness, women’s rights, etc. All these issues are out there and we are trying to fight for our human rights. It’s a God-centered organization and we believe in transforming all of this hurt and pain by using love to make change is the key. Love conquers all of it. As Martin L. King said, love is the most powerful force….and that’s our motto. UCFH.org and the hip-hop alliance which we fight for fair wages, royalties, and retirement for hip-hop artists. We eradicate the injustice we have today. change is the key. Also, the hip-hop church I formed in 2000 is still thriving and it’s the presentation of reality and Jesus Christ by using hip-hop in the gospel. People come to the church looking for hip hop and they leave with Jesus.

Did you know the song “EXPRESS YOURSELF” was one of Charles Wright’s classic? Black History Music at It’s best.

The renowned and legendary musician Charles Wright, celebrated for his influential contributions to the music industry, is gearing up for an eagerly awaited comeback. Sources close to the artist have revealed that Wright is set to release new music in 2024. This announcement marks a significant milestone in his esteemed career and is sure to captivate fans and music enthusiasts worldwide.

Wright's musical legacy, from his leadership of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band to his iconic hits like "Express Yourself," has left an indelible mark on the industry. His return to the studio promises to bring a wave of excitement among both longtime devotees and a new generation of listeners.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 38

Teresa B.Thank you so much for joining The Heat Seekers magazine. We are honored and privileged to have you here. Tell us, how did you get started in the industry?

Charles Wright: I started late. I come from Mississippi Garden field. Father's sharecropper boss who visits him that the devil's music was Blues. So I wasn't allowed to listen to it. Yeah, when I came to California,…walking the streets going back and forth to school and the kids are singing all these songs I heard on the radio. So I started listening to the radio show called The Honey Hancock show. And played all the greatest black music as it came out. And I got hooked on it right away. I didnt think about being in the business playing music until I heard a man named Jessie Belvin. He was one of the greatest thing that ever happened to Southern California. So I called him up because his voice was unique and beautiful. I told him I wanted to sing like him. He told me to get my own f”ing style. I said please dont hang up, I just want to be a part of what you have going on, I went over to his house that weekend and he was having rehearsal with a group and he was gracious enough to let me participate. He told me to stay in the background. One day. I wrote something. And I sit down his piano on that thing where my song open he let me finish the first verse. When I got through I turned around to see the reactions. He said, “I don't believe you the guy that came to stay in the background”. He took me back in the studio to make my 1st record,

Teresa B.: What was the name of that record?

Charles Wright: It's called eternally.

Teresa B.: Tell us, what was the first time you performed on stage?

Charles Wright: Our first performance was from Christmas to New Year in a theater located in downtown Italy. And let me tell you, It was a great experience for me. I was totally green. I now had over a dozen of women trying to get a hold of me.

Teresa B.: Who influenced you to move forward in this industry?

Charles Wright: Jessie Belvin, of course, I mean he took me wing and put in another group called “The Shields”. He had a huge record called “You cheated, you lied”. that provide an opportunity for me to go on the road. I opened up at the Apollo Theater.

Teresa B.: You have recently been inducted into the national R&B Hall of Fame class of 2024. Tell me about that.

Charles Wright: I didn't know I was being inducted until that day. I'm thankful. But I don't do my music for that. I do it because I love making music. I love people. And I do my music for the people. And all the other accolades I get from that. That God gives us. For whatever reason, but I don't poke my chest out. I'm thankful that people appreciate my music. I’m very thankful.

Teresa B.: Congratulations, so you've been writing and producing. What was one of the most favorite songs that you've written?

Charles Wright: I would say “Express Yourself”. It's been a great song for me. It's been in over 100 commercials around world. It has been in 30 or more movies. It made me a pretty stable person financially. I got other songs that I love as much. But I can't deny, that's the one I didn't choose, the world chose it.

Teresa B.: Yes, and that was also sampled a couple of times too. NWA(1986) made it a big hit back then. Charles Wright: Quite a few times. Yes.

Teresa B.: let's talk about the book. It's also called Express Yourself?

Charles Wright: That's my next book. They released it won't be out to the middle of February.

Teresa B.: okay. What was your first book?

Charles Wright: ” Up from where we've come”.

Teresa B.: Also if you had one person in the industry to work with who would it be?

Charles Wright: Right now? Kendrick Lamar

.

Teresa B.: And are you still producing and writing for the future? And what are your future plans for music?

Charles Wright: I'm sorry to say that It doesn't make much sense anymore. to spend a lot of money making music when you can't retrieve it? Streaming it is robbery today.

Teresa B.: How would they be able to reach you?

Charles Wright: Charles Wright@ Expressyourself.net
