YOUR PAIN IS ONLY FOR A SEASON…NOT FOR A LIFETIME (butterfly) It’s truly a blessing to know that God’s grace and mercy is always sufficient (high-five). I can’t count the many times I’ve failed and have fallen short and yes questioned my faith (Sadness). Always remember that your seasons of grief, anger, depression, and isolation were all very necessary! God was, and still is preparing you for your assignment! You are NEVER alone! Friends and family may drop you like you never existed but God is always there! HE IS PREPARING you for greater. Your battle scars are a reminder that the ENEMY DID NOT WIN!!! That’s why when I hear the song “JESUS BE A FENCE” by Fred Hammond. I know Jesus is protecting me every hour of the day. Matthew 11:28, Romans 3:23, Hebrews 13:5 Blessings to All!

On the Road to the Stellar Awards Gospel Recording Artist Kim Person Interview by Angela Anderson

Propelled by excellence and driven by divine purpose... From a small town in North Carolina, Kim Person is no stranger to sharing her gift of singing with others. She has been gracing audiences, small and large, from an early age, with her powerful vocals. Even as a child, her music had a way of touching the hearts of the people. From humble beginnings, Kim Person has remained steadfast on this journey and is starting to see the fruits of her labor. This musical powerhouse is a Billboard charting, 2-time Stellar Award nominee, 4-time Apollo Award winner, and Shirley Caesar Music Outreach Award recipient, with many other prestigious awards and accolades. The road has not always been easy, but Kim Person has weathered the storms and continued to press forward through her music, using it as an outlet to heal and help others to heal through her music. A woman of faithfulness and perseverance, this praise and worship leader, singer, and songwriter is a true testament that with God, all things are possible if you believe. From her first album, You Are My Everything, to her latest album, The Journey 2.0, Kim has continued to bless audiences near and far with her beautiful vocals and eclectic style. She has definitely set a standard and is making a difference in the gospel music industry. Kim Person continues to make tremendous strides touching the hearts of many through music with no signs of slowing down. Her faith, perseverance, and can-do attitude have taken her to places beyond her imagination. She has graced many platforms of major venues and been featured with trailblazers including Donnie McClurkin, Karen Clark Sheard, Yolanda Adams, and more. The Heat Seekers Magazine had the opportunity to talk with Kim Person about her incredible journey, her new chart-topping album, and her 2022 Stellar Award nominations. Angela Anderson: When did you know that you had the gift of singing? Kim Person: It all started with my grandparents. They used to stand me on a cement block, and I would sing, “All Ready Been to the Water,” and people would come from miles around to see the little girl with the big voice. But the part

that I recognized as a gift was the fact that people traveled from miles and miles to see me sing and would throw money at my feet. AA: When you were little, they called you “the little girl with the big voice.” Where did this title come from? KP: The little girl with the big voice…My granddad started this when I would sing on the cement block. Then, after I grew up and became a teenager, I traveled with him around the region singing. People would call us all the time to sing. It was him and the little girl with the big voice. AA: What inspired the birth of the Kim Person Music brand and you as a solo artist? KP: I have been singing all of my life. I would sing at church on Sundays, concerts, etc. I remember Deitrick Haddon coming to my local church that I was a member of at the time, to perform. Many shared with him that I could sing. I sang with, as they say, “My good singing voice,” lol. Short version…He shared a word with me to begin to walk in the calling of an artist. I took what he shared to heart; fast forward, and my first album, You Are My Everything, was birthed. AA: What is the mission of your music? KP: My husband coined the abbreviation of my name, KIM… Keeping It Ministry (K.I.M). In addition, the overall mission of my THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

9

music is to inspire, encourage and motivate people to be their authentic selves and walk in the gift that God has given them. It is all about encouraging and motivating people. It is to remind people not to compare themselves to others but to know that they are enough and trust the process. AA: What aspect of the business do you enjoy? KP: Two things! First, I enjoy going into the studio, creating music, and hearing my songs come to life. I enjoy being able to create new music. It is the most refreshing and rewarding thing when you hear the playback; I have an OMG moment; this is me. The second thing is seeing everything come together. From the print to the press, seeing everything come full circle and seeing the blessings of others getting my music in their hand and experiencing the music that was created.

10

AA: What can music listeners expect from the Kim Person Music brand? KP: They can expect to get an experience. That there is someone who understands where they are. Because I am singing from a pure place. I am singing from my heart and from my hurts. I am singing from my relationship with Christ. I am singing from a place that I hope is infectious and that people will feel that and are drawn to my music and drawn to hear and learn more about me. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

AA: How would you describe your style of music? KP: I would say I am authentic. I really do believe that I can sing all styles of music. I would describe my music as having a style of its own. It’s a blend and mix of all things that represent Christ and inspires you to move forward. From quartet to contemporary to traditional gospel music that is inspirational, you name it, my music has a special blend. However, it is all about having a style that is inspirational. My music is authentic, it’s different, and it bounces from style to style based on the production of the project. I want people to know that I sing all styles of music that is all about inspiration. AA: You have several amazing albums that are such a blessing to people, You Are my Everything, Sincerely Yours, Speak Life, The Journey, and now The Journey 2.0. Share with us what inspired this latest project? KP: The Journey 2.0 is a follow-up to The Journey, which got two Stellar nods back in 2020. I heard the voice of God say, “do it again.” I interpreted that to mean take the journey that I am on and give it a part two…The Journey 2.0. AA: “Wonderful, Marvelous, Glorious, Yes, you are”! Those are lyrics from your chart-topping song, Wonderful. Tell us about this song. KP: This song was inspired by my grandmother. I loved the song that she used to sing back in

AA: Kim, you are on your way to the Stellar Awards with not 1, but 3 nominations. Share with us how that feels as an artist. KP: Albertina Walker Female Vocalist of the Year, Traditional Female Vocalist of The Year, and Traditional Album of the Year… it is exhilarating. God honors faithfulness…I have been doing this for over twenty years. I trust God and the gift that he has given me. When doors were closed or platforms were closed, I created my own. Faithfulness and diligence! I say this, stick to walking in faith, trusting in Him; He will honor it. I feel that this is a reflection of God’s hand over my life. AA: You are an indie artist with skin in the game, a true testament to walking by faith and having perseverance. What advice would you share with new artists who are just getting started? KP: It is ok to be different. Know that what you always see is not really what you always get. When I say that, I mean, you think everybody else is doing it a certain way, and that is how they are successful. You don’t know what others had to do to get what they have. I would say be true to yourself and trust your process. Keep God at the forefront and whatever He speaks, even if it seems weird, do it! You will be surprised at the end results if you do it His way instead of the way you see it. AA: When you are not singing or working on new music, what can we find you doing? KP: I enjoy watching tv and having a moment to step away and let my hair down. I enjoy having a moment just being Kim. AA: Do you have summer traditions or activities you enjoy during the summertime? KP: I love to travel, go to the beach, eat crab legs, shrimp boil…Of course, I love to hang out with my family. We have our annual family reunion in the summer. I come from a large family. My grandmother had 22 kids. When we get together, it is easy for us to have a 50 to 75-voice choir. We have a fish fry and chicken kabobs, love on each other, and make memories.

You can stream my music on Spotify and Apple Music. You can also stay connected with me by visiting my website at kimpersontheartist.com. The Heat Seekers Magazine: Check out Kim Person’s latest album, The Journey 2.0. Available now, where music is sold and streamed.

Nina Foxx: Island Secrets Interview by King Brooks of Black Page Turners

In 2000, Nina Foxx burst on to the literary scene with her debut novel Dippin’ My Spoon and has not stopped. It has been almost six years since her last book, and she is back with a new novel ‘Island Secrets;’ the first book in this series. So, sit back and enjoy this interview. King Brooks: Hi Nina, how are you doing? Please tell the readers about ‘Island Secrets?’ Nina Foxx: Island Secrets is a mystery that takes place on the barrier island of Kiawah Island, near Charleston, SC. The main Character, Denise Martin, is looking for some closure around her husband’s disappearance. He has been declared dead, but there is no body, and his company’s 401 K money is missing. KB: Where did the inspiration for ‘Island Secrets’ come from? NF: The intersection of two things, if only in my head. First, Kiawah is magical. It FEELS like a place where crazy things happen. The first time I visited, I stood in the cove at the restaurant that the characters visit in the opening scenes, and I told my friend that I could FEEL the secrets that the waters of the cove held. I felt as if many lives had passed through there. Kiawah used to be a plantation and is now a luxury beach and golf destination. In addition, I knew someone that had mysteriously disappeared. Before that, they had been an upstanding citizen, husband and father. The. mystery was never solved. KB: Why did you name the book ‘Island Secrets?’ Did you have any other names in running for the book title? NF: The series is called Queens of Kiawah. That was the book name and my agent actually suggested Island Secrets. KB: How long did it take for you to write ‘Island Secrets?’ NF: Awhile. The idea was solid.... but I dragged my feet while waiting for feedback from my agent. She was old school.... snail’s pace. Then I led the Writing Sisters Summit and was inspired to get it finished and out there. KB: What type of research did you do for ‘ Island Secrets?’ Nina Foxx: First, let me say that I spent many vacations on Kiawah Island with my friends. (And in other beach destinations over the years, Such as Martha’s Vineyard, and as a child Sag Harbor, NY). I actually considered buying property in Kiawah myself, which is kind of crazy considering I live all the way on the West Coast of the country right now.

Second, my family is originally from the south, so I’ve been watching closely the almost reverse- migration that’s happening, not just in places outside Charleston, but also in Atlanta and other cities like that. Third, the women in the book are like my friends. Many of us, along with our partners, have worked hard at corporate jobs because that is what people our age did. Our parents laid the groundwork for us to go to school and grad school and get “good” jobs that they considered. These things may not have been our passions, but they’ve allowed us to have lifestyles that are solidly middle class and better. We can afford second homes and vacations, and these things make memories. All of these things are research. Lastly, after my friend went missing leaving his family behind, combined with doing my own estate planning during the pandemic, I realized that many of us just

product development for major tech company. (The name starts with a G.) KB: When did the writing bug hit you? NF: I have always been a writer. And a reader. I remember in middle school right into Catholic Digest. I sent them a story for their Christmas issue about the last Christmas with my mother. They did not publish it. And high school had several editorials published in the New York post. I wrote to them because I was angry about things I said. KB: What is your writing process? NF: The pandemic turned my process on the edge. I write better when I have a deadline, but I’m always working on something. Sometimes more than once something at the same time. I usually end up having to set myself a personal deadline to finish things.

don’t do it, or we don’t understand our financial picture fully and sometimes that leaves us in a lurch. Denise, the main character is that person. She has no financial understanding at all because she has left at all to a man who has now disappeared. KB: When you wrote the last word, what did you do afterwards? NF: Sheesh. Made notes for the next book in the series...and probably bought shoes. KB: Give the readers a brief bio on you and as a writer? NF: I wrote my first book in 1999. I’ve been published by both large and small publishers in various genres. I’ve also written industrial design patents, plays and screenplays. I’m currently a writer in residence at Brown soul theater on the West Coast where they are developing my latest play, verified air. We were expecting a full theatrical opening in regional Theatre in the spring of 2023. KB: What was life like growing up? NF: I grew up in New York City, raised mainly by my father. My mother died when I was young. As a result, I spent summers from the day that school it out the day before school was supposed to start in my mother’s hometown in Bessemer, Alabama. KB: What kind of dreams did you have for yourself growing up? NF: That’s funny. I think I was an in the moment person and I am still that. I do remember telling my mother before she died at all of six years old that I wanted to be a psychiatrist. I didn’t do that although I was premed in college. I am a psychologist by trade. I work during the day as engineering psychologist in

KB: You have been in the book business for 20+ years. What advice would you give to new authors/writers? NF: Read everything. Do your research. The book business is constantly changing. You’ll have to make some choices about the things that are important to you in terms of getting a work out to the readership. Take the lessons you learn with each project forward to the next thing, and don’t be afraid to help others. KB: Besides yoga, what are some hobbies that you like to do? NF: I am a yoga teacher finishing my 500-hour certification. I do teach yoga online a couple of times a week and I teach at conferences. I’m even tired at work for team meetings. I’m a creative. I love to travel. I do that as much as I can. I’m also into investment real estate, and own a few properties in different places. I make things. I’m a fiber artist. I knit, crochet, spin, and weave. I test patterns for Knitwear designers which basically means I help them make sure their math is correct. I hope to publish my own pattern soon. KB: Have you started working on your next book? NF: There are three in progress. The next book in this series which right now is called “The Dead Don’t Speak,” but may also be called “Sisterhood Secret”. It should be done shortly. I’m also working on a coloring journal based on some of the things that I talk about in yoga and the third book in the series. Lastly, I have a couple of girls writing projects going right now. KB: When this life is said and done. What do you want to be remembered for? NF: Making people think and helping others. LS: Tell us about the vision behind the Gentry book series? CC: Gentry started out being a stress reliever. I needed it at the end of the day. At the end of the day, I needed a way to unwind healthily. I ran for a local public office. Campaigning is work. You are constantly thinking of your next move, the next venue, asking for donations, meeting the citizens, shaking hands, and ignoring the negative. The one book turned into others by popular demand. The Pink Lemonade Podcast: A Self-help Podcast to Help Turn Life’s Lemons into Lessons Interview by Angela Anderson

“The only ‘L’ we take in life are lessons.” ~ Whitney Barkley Whitney Barkley public speaker, writer, and podcast host is a skilled communicator and digital marketing enthusiast with over five years of experience and education in the digital world and content marketing. Whitney found that she was a “fixer” of others, but in 2016, a light bulb moment caused her to realize that she was so focused on helping others and “making it” in her business that she never took time to figure out who she was and how she wanted to show up in the world. Whitney thought it was important to show a different side of herself. Most people who know her know her for working hard and being ambitious, but they don’t really get to see many of the behindthe-scenes or inner workings of wanting to be an ambitious and successful person. According to Whitney, learning how to look beyond ambition and simply be a human is really important to her and inspired her to start podcasting. Thus, the Pink Lemonade Podcast was birthed as a self-help podcast to help people turn their lemons of life into lessons. It is an audio series that provides the perfect blend of transparency, inspiration, and stories to help individuals seize the moment and savor the process. The podcast is a carefully curated platform that allows others to explore their true self without distraction and with intention. Whitney found the Pink Lemonade Podcast to be a vehicle connecting her to people who need to hear what she has to say and an avenue to serve and be a voice to help others in ways she couldn’t imagine. Podcasting gave her a voice she never knew she had. Angela Anderson: How did you get started in podcasting? Whitney Barkley: I got started in podcasting in late 2015. My husband at the time had a podcast, and he was really into it, and I started to get an understanding of what podcasts were and how they function. I was excited to start my own. I was particularly drawn to podcasts with solo episodes because they seemed so focused and direct. I love conversations, but when I listened to solo episodes, I felt like I got more nuggets. So, I decided that I wanted to launch my own mini podcast, a micro-podcast called Pink Lemonade Podcast. I wanted it to be my opportunity to reflect because oftentimes we are on the go; we keep moving. Truly, Pink Lemonade Podcast is an opportunity to self-reflect and to look inside of your-

self. Our goal is to really help people understand their value and how they got life and just take a second to sit back and savor, enjoy the moment, reflect, and understand. AA: What inspired you to start the Pink Lemonade Podcast? WB: What inspired me to start the Pink Lemonade Podcast was Beyoncé! As most know, she came out with the Lemonade album in 2016. It was such a beautiful occurrence for me. When she came out with Lemonade, it was her being vulnerable, us

seeing a different side of her, and her being unapologetic and sharing a different side of herself. It was something that was so profound to me. She is someone that I look up to and someone I love not just in terms of her music but her work ethic. AA: What makes the Pink Lemonade Podcast unique? WB: I think what makes Pink Lemonade Podcast unique is the fact that it is a micro podcast. Most episodes are only 10 to 15 minutes in length, and they leave you with some sort of question to ask yourself. So not only are you listening to my personal stories or things that I have researched or things that may matter. But how can you apply these things to your own life? What are the practical tips and skills or things that you can take away so you can learn how to be your best self? Like, how can you ultimately learn how to turn the lemons in your life into lessons. AA: Share some of the behind-the-scenes of what is involved with making a Pink Lemonade Podcast episode. WB: Making an episode of Pink Lemonade is a couple of things. Most people don’t know this, but I write a script when I create an episode. I literally write the entire episode. I think about things that I want to say; I think about things that are profound. Sometimes I follow the script, and other times, I don’t really follow it verbatim but adlib and add some things. A script helps me stay focused. I have a setup that I usually do at my home. I have a microphone that has been an amazing resource for me, and I do my own editing. I edit in a program called Adobe Audition, and I also edit in a program called GarageBand. It takes me about an hour to record and edit each episode. I am very in the moment and share things that are most important to me to do. Contrary to what I have been known for in content marketing, everyone is like, have a schedule, say things… This podcast is truly unique because it is something that is from the heart. It’s not something that I am ultimately planning out months ahead. Everything that is happening to me in real-time has turned into an episode. That’s so much to say the least, lol.

with others, and get a grip on who they want to be, who they are, and who they want to become. That’s the most important thing. AA: What can listeners expect to receive when they tune into the Pink Lemonade Podcast? WB: I would say… Raw. Honest. Truth. I always joke that we are now serving because we are truly serving the people who are listening. AA: What is one piece of advice you would share with someone who wants to start a podcast? WB: I would say, do your research. Definitely do things that feel natural to you. Don’t work with topics or do things just because you think it’s popular. Do things because you think they are necessary. I think that’s the most important advice that I can give. It’s especially important not to think that you have to follow the trends. Everybody is so focused on being number 1; none of that matters in podcasting to me. In my opinion, if your show is good, it will have the potential to grow organically. You do not have to be somebody that you are not.

AA: What is an aspect of your podcast that brings you tremendous joy? WB: I would have to say, my listeners. The listener feedback brings me tremendous joy and ultimately encourages me to keep going. When people say the takeaways and things that they have learned or ways that the podcast has helped them, it truly makes my heart warm because I would never imagine that anything that I had to say in regard to personal development could help somebody else. And that is why I think it is so important that we have these reflections. I hope that the podcast encourages other people to have conversations, share THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

AA: What advice would your now-adult self, share with your younger 16 -year-old-self? WB: I would tell my 16- year-old-self, to learn to accept people for who they are. Most for who they are. Most importantly, we try so hard to change others. We may have our own perception of what things should be, but we have to look at things for what they are. I believe that when you truly live in reality, your life takes a better turn, a turn for the good. AA: What’s next for the Pink Lemonade Podcast? WB: I am excited. I have recently taken a pivot in my career. I have been doing content marketing for the past 6 years, and now I am jumping into the ring of a stationary business. So, notebooks, planners, notepads, you got it. I want to bring the Pink Lemonade brand along. It is all about personal development and I want to incorporate the podcast into my stationery business. Check out the website at www.luvyoursstationery.com. AA: Share with us how people can listen to the podcast and stay connected with you. WB: For more information on The Pink Lemonade Podcast go to www.pinklemonadepodcast.com. The podcast can be heard on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and SoundCloud. People can stay connected by following me on: Instagram at whitneylbarkley or the Speakerazzi website at www.speakerazzi.com.

When “Having It Your Way” Doesn’t Work by DAViD SPENCER In 1974, Burger King adopted the slogan “Have It Your Way.” It remains one of the most popular and most recognized slogans ever used by a company. One of the first advertisements in the campaign read- You have the right to have what you want, exactly when you want it. Because on the menu of life, you are “Today’s Special.” And Tomorrow’s. And the day after that.” There was even a jingle. Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce; Special orders don’t upset us. All we ask is that you let us serve it your way… We can serve your broiled beef Whopper, Fresh with everything on topper. Anyway you think is proper; have it your way…

Burger King, on multiple occasions, tried to abandon the famous slogan. Offering this level of customization in many instances caused long lines and increased wait times for customers. Employees increasable had to deal with angry customers. The same customers who were excited about getting things their way are the same customers complaining about the consequence of their choices. They didn’t understand that there was a cost they had to pay for having it their way. It’s crazy how in one instance, people are happy; in the next moment, they are frustrated and irritated because things aren’t going their way.

In life, it’s hard to have everything your way. Even when you are in the driving seat, you must navigate and contend with other drivers on the road. As an independent artist, you may not be answering to a label, but you have to answer to fans. Getting in the playlist and having them regularly digest your content is an honor. To do this, you have to consider what they are looking for. If no one is listening, what’s the point. You have to be willing to cater a little to what the people want. Perform to the crowd and cater to your audience. If you have everything your way, you may miss an opportunity to grow your base. Adjust accordingly. Happy creating! ExcLUsive Interview

Michelle Brooks-Thompson

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

A phenomenal singer on the rise Interview by The Heat Seekers

In 2021, After hearing the news that Michelle Brooks-Thompson wanted to sign with Sony Orchard, I was elated and honored to work with her. I saw her greatness from afar and I knew she would make waves in the music world. 1 Year later she is at the top of billboard charts across the country, singing The National Anthem for several sports teams, and making appearances on major talk shows and podcasts. So we all want to know..who is Michelle Brooks-Thompson? The Heat Seekers: Tell us how you got started? Michelle Brooks-Thompson: I started singing at a very young age under the tutelage of my mother. Most of the training came from within my maternal grandparents church. THS: What was your ultimate goal when you signed with Sony Orchard? MBT: Prior to signing with Sony Orchard, I had spent my career performing and creating music to be released. My hope has always been to get a distribution deal and or a major label deal so this was step in the right direction. THS: How do you balance music and family? MBT: I really have a great support system. Without my husband (David) and closest family members (Gigi my sister-cousin, my daughters Aaliyah and Aleesia, and my son D3), it would be very difficult to pursue music at the level I have been blessed to do so. I really could not balance this career plus family without them standing beside me and cheering me on. THS: How long have you been on this journey with music? MBT: I would say that I’ve been on this journey pretty much all of my life. I knew as a child that I wanted to be a singer. I always found myself in music and it was done intentionally so that I was able to build a foundation. At one moment… I thought that I wanted to be a doctor so I enrolled in college as Pre-med but then decided during my senior year of college that I wanted to sing. I changed my major to Music with a concentration in vocal performance and piano. From that moment on everything that I did was for the advancement of my music career.

32

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

THS: How long does it normally take to write, record, and distribute a song? MBT: This is a question that has many answers because the process isn’t always the same for me. Sometimes I’ve created songs from dreams, while driving in the car, or just sitting at home and a song pops into my head. From there it involves connecting with a producer who can help make that song come to life. Sometimes that can be a quick process and sometimes it may take a little bit more time. We might add or change things to ensure we create the best. Going into the studio can be lengthy as far as the time it takes to record lead & background vocals and the band. Mixing and mastering is next and that takes time. Once all the pieces are in place then we forward it for distribution. Distribution really is based on their calendar of release dates/ cycle. We use this calendar as well as our preferred date to choose the best date. THS: You have a long list of recordings and individuals you have worked with. What are you most proud of achieving? MBT: I have been able to work with different producers, singers, songwriters, and musicians. I would say the entire span of my musical career is what I’m most proud of. I have achieved so much in my career that I look at it all in amazement. As an independent artist there are challenges when it comes to creating your brand and name amongst some of the major artists in this industry. When I see my music on the billboards and receive award nominations, it makes the highs and lows of my

journey seem worth it and that I wasn’t wrong for changing my college major. THS: What keeps you going? MBT: It is my Faith in God that keeps me going. Now there have been times that I have wanted to give up but there is something inside of me that pushes me and tells me to keep going. The word of God sustains me in my lowest moments. When I feel like I haven’t come as far as I think, I take a look back at all the things that God has blessed me to achieve and realize that I’m on the right track. I have come so far and there’s more for me to accomplish. I just need to keep the faith. It’s just like my single: “Never give up, never give in, you’re closer to the top, you’re closer to the win!” THS: Tell how did you get the opportunity to sing at so many sporting events in the Boston Area? MBT: Singing the National Anthem started in 2011. I was working at the time and I walked into work one morning and my boss presented me with a flyer for an audition. The Boston Red Sox was hosting a competition called Sing Your Way to Fenway. She encouraged me to leave work and go audition for the Boston Red Sox. It would afford a winner the opportunity to sing for opening day that season. There were 121 singers and I was selected as the winner! From there the rest is history. It was my opening day performance that wowed the fans, the players, and sporting league executives. From that moment, I began to receive phone calls from different sporting teams and organizations that loved my rendition and wanted me to perform for their games and special events. It’s been over 10 years and I keep getting calls. THS: Who inspired you in Gospel Music? MBT: I would not say that there is one artist that inspires me in the gospel music genre. For me … Gospel is just the genre to classify the style of music. The message that is being given through Gospel is inspired by the word of God. My decision or inspiration to sing Gospel music has been based on spiritual inspiration. I can tell you who inspires me vocally and that would be voices like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Kelly Price, Patti LaBelle, and my mother. THS: What would you like to see differently in the music industry? MBT: I would like there to be a true equal level playing

field for independent artists in the industry. It almost seems like there is an entire separate movement that is being birth for independent artists. We are creating our own award shows, radio program platforms, and our own indie support groups that are separate from major music artists. I don’t believe there should be a barrier between independent artists and major record label artists. Both types of artists are releasing great music however, the level of respect and honor is not there. I often ask the question, how do we get the respect when our name isn’t big enough but our talent is? How do you get a “name” when you are considered a “no name” and folks don’t take indie artists serious or give indie artists a chance to become a big name? It’s like we have to prove ourselves… yet we aren’t listened to without that “name”. I am thankful for artists like Chance the Rapper. His success is proof that there are great indie artists who are pushing forward and going to that next level. We out here and we are coming! THS: If you could give any advice to an up and coming gospel music artist, what would it be? MBT: My advice to every artist that is coming up in the music industry, regardless of the genre, is to keep the faith. Believe in yourself as if you’re already at the level you desire. Don’t wait until you get to that level to believe in your musical talent. Now’s the time in your journey to believe. The truth is that you are going to face opposition and experience closed doors as well as opened doors. Those oppositions that you face can often make you doubt your talent and your calling. During these times keep your faith grounded and hold on to your dreams. Don’t let anybody take them away from you… even if it seems that your journey has obstacles. Use these obstacles as learning moments and add it as fuel to your fire to keep your passion burning. Your time will come. THS: What are your future music goals from here ? MBT: Right now my goal is to see myself next year on the stage at the Grammys. This goal of course includes creating an album and releasing great music for the world. THS: How can your fans reach you? MBT: People can find me on social media as Michelle Brooks-Thompson and MBThompsonsings (Twitter & Instagram). My website is www.michellebrooksthompsonmusic.com

AUTHOR OF THE MONTH

Denise N. Wheatley

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

A Passion for Writing Denise N. Wheatley Interview by Angela Anderson

Denise N. Wheatley was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She found her love for books and reading at an early age. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Fast forward, and the opportunity came for her to follow her dream to become an author. She found that she not only loved books and reading them, but she loved being the creator and wordsmith of great stories as well. Denise is an eclectic romance author who has traditionally published many novels and novellas with strong, colorful, and relatable characters while telling entertaining stories that embody matters of the heart. Many know her for her chick-lit novel I WISH I NEVER MET YOU, which was published by Simon and Schuster in 2004. However, this Chicago native is no stranger to the literary world or being in the creative space. In addition to being an author, she is an avid blogger, ghostwriter, true crime addict, and self-proclaimed pop culture expert. A romantic at heart, she loves happy endings and the art of storytelling. From chick lit to suspense, sweet to steamy, Denise has a gift of writing entertaining stories that are known to stay with readers long after the final chapter. She loves connecting with readers and knowing they enjoy reading her books as much as she enjoys writing them. The Heat Seekers Magazine had an opportunity to learn more about this gifted and versatile author, Denise N. Wheatley. Angela Anderson: When did you know you wanted to become an author? Denise N. Wheatley: I have been in love with books since I was a very young child. But it was during my freshman year of college when I realized I wanted to work as an author for a living. Back then, it seemed like an unrealistic goal, especially when some of my family members and friends didn’t believe in me. But I didn’t let that stop me! AA: What do you enjoy about writing and creating stories? DNW: I love writing/creating worlds and characters that allow my imagination to run free. There are so many aspects of our lives that are beyond our control. The ability to build storylines from the ground up on my own terms gives me an amazing sense of freedom that is indescribable. I am grateful to have found my passion.

36

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

AA: If you had to give yourself a tagline to describe your writing, what would it be? DNW: Romance with a dose of sugar and a dash of suspense. AA: What is a fun or interesting fact about you that most readers don’t know? DNW: I am a night owl! My best writing happens in the middle of the night. Most days, when I’m working to meet a deadline, I am still sitting in front of my laptop while the sun’s coming up. AA: What was one surprising thing you learned about yourself during your writing journey? DNW: During my journey, I learned that writing is very therapeutic for me. The past couple of years has been pretty rough on most of us. I used that time to write, which enabled me to tap into a new level of strength that I didn’t know existed. AA: You have an amazing series that has been optioned for film. Please share about this amazing opportunity. DNW: Yes! My holiday novel, CHRISTMAS IN FULL BLOOM, has been optioned for film, and I am absolutely thrilled. LOVE AT THE ICICLE CAFE is under contract with an amazing executive producer who’s created a number of wonderful holiday films. So that book is in great hands as well. Seeing my novels come to life on screen has always been a goal of mine, so this is all a dream come true. AA: Would you say that writing found you, or you found writing? DNW: I’d say we found one another, lol. My love of books organically parlayed into a love of writing. At this point, I don’t know

enough to embark on your writing journey. Take it from me; it is absolutely worth it. There is no better feeling than completing a novel. It’s such an accomplishment, and you have to trust that you can do it. But you just have to start. AA: What is one of your favorite childhood memories of summertime? DNW: Being out of school, lol! I grew up in Chicago, so summertime meant beautiful weather, freedom to flourish outside of the classroom, and of course, reading all the fun fiction novels that I couldn’t get to during the school year. Summer was also the best time to dig into my mother’s stacks of romances, which is another fond childhood memory.

where one ends, and the other begins. I’ve just always adored the art of storytelling and remember writing little stories and poems early on during elementary school. So, it’s been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. AA: Your most recent book is The Heart-Shaped Murders. Tell us what this book is about. DNW: THE HEART-SHAPED MURDERS is about a forensic investigator named Lena Love, who works for the LAPD. She’s on the hunt for a twisted serial killer whose modus operandi is strangling women, then carving a heart-shaped symbol into their chests. During her investigation, Lena ends up getting attacked and returns to her hometown to recuperate. While there, she reconnects with an old flame, detective David Hudson, who she’d left behind after moving to LA. Sparks soon fly between the pair, but they’re disrupted when the killer appears to have followed Lena home. As she is stalked and bodies—all marked with the killer’s signature heart—are discovered in David’s jurisdiction, it becomes a race against time to catch the killer before Lena loses her life. AA: If you could describe this book in three words, what would they be? DNW: Dangerous. Twisted. Intriguing. AA: What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring authors? DNW: Start the book. I always tell aspiring authors this. Starting the book is the hardest part. It’s the most intimidating because once you start, you’re proving that you believe in yourself

AA: What do you enjoy about summertime? DNW: I always relate summertime to good times. Happy times. Enjoying the outdoors with family and friends, parties, cookouts… People seem more open and social during the summer, too, which is always nice. Again, being from Chicago, the winter can be so stifling. So, getting out and exploring during the summer always feels like a new adventure. AA: What can we find you doing when you are not writing? DNW: I love going to the movies, watching and playing tennis, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. Of course, I love reading. When I’m not writing, I enjoy ticking books off of my TBR list. AA: What is next for Denise N. Wheatley? DNW: I am putting the final touches on two Harlequin Intrigue holiday projects that are being released later this year—BACKCOUNTRY COVER-UP and A DEADLY CHRISTMAS INVITATION. I also just completed Book 2 in my West Coast Crime Story series, DEATH IN THE NEVADA DESERT. That is the follow-up to THE HEART-SHAPED MURDERS, which hits shelves in May of 2023. AA: How can we stay connected with you? DNW: I am all over social media and love connecting with readers. with Kisha Green FIREWORKS Ok, it is Summertime, and it is the perfect time to reflect on being sexy AND independent. I am not just talking about paying for your meal on a date, making sure the lights do not get cut off or watching some fireworks, but more about your relationships with your person of interest. Are you FREE? Are you able to effectively communicate what you want? I’ve said this previously on many episodes of the Digital Foreplay podcast, but I want to elaborate more than the getting to know each other phase is critical because some things are under a microscope; I’m lying; EVERYTHING is under the microscope. Sometimes we are just trying to find the words...No such thing as perfect, but you want to be on your best behavior so that the other doesn’t judge you. During the work week, I’m in my office listening to music all day, and as a writer, I pay extra close attention to the lyrics. One song I hear and think about the infinite possibilities of a new budding romance is Jagged Edge’s Trying to Find The Words https://youtu.be/LQlKUVJQZZY not everything pertains to every relationship, but for the most part, if you listen. Because ultimately, what the song is trying to convey is that they want to say the right thing. The topic of sex is sometimes taboo for us because it’s still new, but I discuss it on my podcast...I am not a freak, but as I said, I do not like labels; sexually expressive sounds better to me. Flirting and looking sexy should not be just when you think you will get lucky that night but being free to be sexy all the time. I feel sexy in red lipstick and when I have on a good bra. *smile* and truth is, I am a flirt at times, so Chante Moore’s Something To Remember https://youtu.be/jqmZFbP-rXA comes to mind. I am a hopeless romantic, but good vibes need loving, and Kenny Latimore’s Stay On Your Mind https://youtu.be/ZsKtJKGTz9z I love LOVE, and like romance, love letters, flowers, random messages, and random acts of kindness that let the person know they are on my mind and they mean something to you. I like picnics in the park and walks on the boardwalk or simply sitting somewhere looking at the stars, daydreaming, and telling each other our goals, dreams, and aspirations. I am free to be but more so having that self-confidence to have that kind of independence that lasts long after July ends.

The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb

The Violin Conspiracy is a riveting page-turner indeed. From the book blurb and cover, I knew that it was a must-read for me. There is nothing like it. I was hooked from the beginning to the end. This heartfelt, fast-paced mystery will make you make emotional deposits as you journey with Ray McMillian as he faces adversity while striving to pursue his dream. Just when things seem to be looking up, his violin is stolen. And this is not just any old violin or what appeared to just be his great-great grandfather’s beat-up fiddle. It is discovered that he has ownership of a priceless Stradivarius. He is weeks away from the most important competition of his life, the renowned Tchaikovsky Competition. The stakes are high; with a five-million-dollar ransom for the violin, the stress of the competition and not knowing whom he can trust is overwhelming. However, Ray is determined to reclaim his violin, become a world-class professional violinist, and allow nothing to stand in his way. The suspense and mystery of it all is a perfect blend of pure perfection and edginess that keeps you on the edge of your seat, wanting more. The Violin Conspiracy is written to the tune of music that radiates off the pages, enhancing the experience of the world of classical music. The words are like music making sweet melodies as you are captivated by the story’s intensity. It’s as if the music and the songs played throughout the story are all characters in themselves that move the story forward. Brendan Slocumb did not disappoint. His knowledge of classical music and the backdrop of his personal experience is an added bonus to the magnificence of his debut novel. He wrote The Violin Conspiracy with a brilliant sense of cleverness. It is an impressive read that I highly recommend. I can honestly say it is one of my favs of 2022. It is definitely booked hangover worthy with an ending you will not see coming. You are sure to be thinking about The Violin Conspiracy long after finishing this beautifully well-written read. The Violin Conspiracy is available in Hardback, ebook, and audio and can be purchased where books are sold. Jayla Scott Wholly Essentials A Convenience Store for Herbal-Based Products Interview by Angela Anderson

Jayla Scott is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Wholly Essentials, a natural-based business. Born and raised in North Carolina, she is a creative being and lover of the arts. This creator has a versatile palate for the creative space, particularly dance, music, and poetry. She’s a writer who dances to the beat of her own drum. We cannot leave out the fact that one of her favorite pieces to listen to is “In the Distance,” composed by Tony Anderson. Jayla is a distinguished woman of many talents and wisdom, destined to leave her mark and create an avenue for her legacy. In following her goals to be present in the world and make a difference, she genuinely desires to help others through the use of plant-based products with her company, Wholly Essentials. Jayla, wise beyond her years, works with sincerity and from a place of peace and sureness when creating products set to heal and help others. She lives by the quote, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” (Warren Buffett) She is a firm believer that your actions not only affect you but everyone around you in small and big ways. Angela Anderson: What inspired the birth of Wholly Essentials? Jayla Scott: My business was birthed for two reasons. One, I carried the knowledge that I did not want to “do” the conventional. Nor did I want to “be” the conventional. I asked myself, “What will people say about Jayla Scott when she leaves this earth? What kind of legacy do I want to be responsible for leaving behind? Who am I going to be?” And the answers to these three questions were far from the standard ‘work to live.’ I would not be known as one who slaved their life away doing work they did not desire to do, just to survive into tomorrow. I refuse. And I refuse because I know there is another way. Two, with this knowledge, I still carry my love for natural remedies. I learned all I needed to start my business. Plants have so many healing powers. And there is so much sickness and hurt in the world. I believe plants were put here to heal the sickness and heal the hurt. AA: What is the mission of Wholly Essentials? JS: Wholly Essentials is all about showing people that there is another option. One that may be better suited for them. With

42

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

this business, I plan to not only show another way towards the healing people deserve but also spread the knowledge of what nature around all of us can do for our health, why it works, and the limitless possibilities that exist simply because there are countless amounts of plants living in this world. As long as there is a plant, there is a remedy. Wholly Essentials was created as a means to share this journey of information with others. People deserve to know all the choices that exist before having to make a decision concerning their health. And oftentimes, decisions are made without knowing all the choices. There are options, and Wholly Essentials desires to share these options. AA: What’s the story behind the name Wholly Essentials? JS: Simply put, I wanted to create a business that would only

sell products that are actually useful to people. A business that completely, hence wholly, sells products that are essential to people because they are useful. Products that are essential because they are useful. I shared these wants with God. And not long after, He whispered the name Wholly Essentials. AA: What is unique about the Wholly Essentials brand? JS: I call Wholly Essentials a convenience store for herbal-based products. Even though I only have one line of products out at this time. I see the future. I know where this business is headed. And just as I said before, Wholly Essentials is a convenience store for herbal-based products. You will be able to shop there for what you need. And I can say this confidently now because everything that I do with this business, I bring God into it. The recipes, the formulating, the labeling, the products, the entirety of the business. He is what makes it different. AA: What can customers expect from your business? JS: Currently, customers can expect to buy quality products that only cater to their health. In the future, customers can expect the above too, but a wider array of products to choose from. AA: What is one item that is a popular order and in high demand for Wholly Essentials? JS: Wholly Essentials has a product titled “The Good Oil.” This oil is formulated for dry skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Customers love it and have told me that it really helps them with their psoriatic skin and eczema. AA: What aspect of the business do you enjoy? JS: Other than being able to call something my own. The aspect of business that I enjoy most is being able to learn and then create something based on what I learned about this herb or that flower. Watching the creation of a product unfold is a mind-bending but mesmerizing process. You will spend months creating one product. Oftentimes what you start with is not what you end with. So, looking at the end result and comparing it to the start of the process. It is like you finally get to breathe when the product is done, truly. Because you get to say, “It is done.” AA: It’s summertime; what are your favorite products for this season? JS: For summertime, my go-to moisturizer is body butter. If you are familiar with body butter, then you know using body butter in the summer is a bit backwards. They are thicker than your basic lotion or body oil, so they are typically used in the colder months. But I always find I reach for them more during the hotter months. They are an amazing moisturizer, and I absolutely

love to make my own. My family loves to use my homemade body butter too! AA: What’s your favorite summer activity with your family? JS: A dip in the pool on a hot day is the number one way my family and I love to cool off! I’ve always loved the water and being able to submerge myself completely in it. The silence that follows when you’re completely underwater is entrancing! AA: What is one piece of advice you would share for new small business owners who are just getting started? JS: One token I have learned is that things usually never go as planned in business. But preparation makes the biggest game changer when plans deviate to another route. Business owners have to continually prepare for the unknown so that they can stay ready, so they don’t have to get ready. Preparation is key. AA: What’s next for Wholly Essentials? JS: Next on Wholly Essentials’ to-do list is to expand the product inventory. There will be new additions added to the list of herbal-based products. Research is also being done for a line of products, separate from the ones above, that will cater to women’s health. Apart from expanding my store, Wholly Essentials is joining partnerships and collaborating with other businesses! AA: How can people connect with Wholly Essentials? JS: To connect with Wholly Essentials, you can email us at whollyessentials.est@gmail.com. You can also access our online store by going to our website at www.whollyessentials.com. We can also be found on Instagram at whollyessentialsline. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Literary Agent Interview by La Sheera Lee

Stephanie Phillips is a born and bred southern girl. After graduating from High Point University, she had different careers including modeling, Mary Kay, publicist, blogger, radio show host, and then found her footing as an agent. When not agenting, hosting, blogging, or reading, she spends time with her husband and two adorable kids in their Myrtle Beach home. If you’d like to be considered to be represented by SBR Media, please check the Submissions page. If you’d like to discuss rights about any of the authors listed, please email Stephanie.

LL: What is the best advice you can give a new author seeking representation? SP: There are many different types of agents, so I recommend authors do a thorough search and make a list of agents that fit what they’re looking to do with their business/career. Publishing is a long game. Take your time to perfect your story but also look for the perfect person to help walk with you through your career. Submit to several and be sure to ask for a phone call, if the agent doesn’t offer, so you can gauge if you think you can work closely with them. Don’t just settle because you received an offer of representation.

La Sheera Lee: What is the role of a literary agent? Stephanie Phillips: A literary agent’s job is to partner with their client in their business. These days many publishing houses will not allow the author to submit on their own so they have to find an agent. Working together, the author and agent, can build a strong duo to mastermind the client’s career. LL: How can authors perfect an elevator pitch for literary agents? SP: Think about the best thing about your book. How would you describe it in 30 seconds or less? Grab the meat and potatoes, but leave them hanging wanting to know more. LL: How did you become a literary agent? SP: HA! Well, the publishing house I was working for decided to close and my authors I worked with asked me if I would become their agent. I was already doing most of what is required except for shopping to other publishing houses. After talking it over with my husband and my closest friends (who are also authors) I decided to give it a go! LL: Typically, how many new clients do you take per year? SP: In the beginning I took quite a few. Since I have over 60 clients, including 3 publishing houses that I represent, an author/book has to be completely captivating in order for me to add to my list. I have a couple of other agents at the agency that are accepting new clients, so I refer authors over their way.

Poet’s Row Freedom Place by: ADQ Peace, My journey from Shelby to now has provided gems. Started when I was obsessing over timbs. Continues as I cry about Lil Kim. We claim freedom but I challenge it. Because we’ve embraced this western surface level superficiality with no balancing. Am I really free? I’m more disrespectful to my queens than the master was when I lock her lips make her rock her hips I think I’m more of a zombie in an apocalypse. Getting money is my ultimate accomplishment. Am I free? Slavers still got me in chains. Working sun up to sun down til I’m nearly insane. They collecting the gains. While I’m drained. And surely weak. The slavers are on green paper that isn’t backed by currency. I doubt I’m free in this society the one who runs the city lies to me. The one who talks about God ain’t polite to me. We wearing chains, we claim greatness while fighting deep. My ancestors most beautiful descendant is what I’ll try to be. Ase’

Actor on the Rise Interview by The Heat Seekers

First off, I would like to thank Teresa B Howell for giving me an opportunity to write a little bit for HeatSeekers magazine. Seeing how far I have come in my personal and professional life has had its ups and downs. Growing up in a broken family wasn’t easy. My mother was a strong woman putting up with my father’s alcoholic behaviors. See, my father was a cheater and a drinker. I never knew him as much as I would have liked to. I never knew the abuse that was taking place around until I got older. Finally, seeing how my father beat my mother when he had drank to much alcohol wasn’t pretty. My mother did everything to shelter me from seeing this take place. As years pass and I had gotten older, I still to this day can see the images in my head as my mother was bruised and bloodied. Growing up in a small town, you never heard anything about domestic violence. As I grew older as a child, I was finally understanding how it wasn’t good living with an abuser and alcoholic. I found myself at a young age, listening to a lot of music and watching TV to escape. I watched movies and looked at the different characters in the shows. As the years passed by, I had gotten married and had children of my own. I always promised I would not ever hit or abuse my family the way I grew up. I’m still finding myself escaping in my own way, watching movies, and listening to music. I always wanted to try acting or singing and never had the courage. At the age of 34 I had gotten a chance to be a background actor on a TV show. Nervous I was, not knowing what to expect from the experience I was about to embark on. I didn’t realize that I was about to go places I never dreamed of, all because of that first time on a TV set. My acting career started going crazy as I put hard work and dedication into my craft. My life experiences growing up helped me bring out the different characters I was portraying in front of the camera. As I grew in the film industry I have met some amazing people along the way. Getting to be on film posters and seeing your name in the credits. At 52, I’m thankful I took the leap into acting. Acting has helped me in so many ways in my adult life. Don’t be afraid to take that leap, whether it’s music, art , playing an instrument or acting. Before I go, if you know of anyone who may need help that’s going through a difficult situation, try and help. Believe it

or not, my acting career has helped me bring my story out as a child of domestic violence. Always remember that there’s someone else going through a lot more than you. I pray each day, hoping someone out there gets the right help they need. I hope just a little piece of my story has helped you as a reader. Also, my story has turned into films that have been in numerous film festivals throughout the country. Remember to always encourage others, never judge a book by its cover. I am blessed to have had amazing opportunities doing what I do and sharing my life experiences. Hopefully my story will inspire you and see your future change for the better. I love to travel. I also love to taste a variety of styles of food. But sometimes I will try the same thing but it could be made different. One day while working in Knoxville Tennessee, I took a break to meet a friend for dinner. He suggested sushi at this Asian restaurant on the outskirts of Knoxville. It was like a country style bar because it had high top tables and live country style music in the atmosphere. This was totally something new. Can you imagine live country music in an Asian restaurant? I loved it and it totally fit my vibe. My choice was the chicken pad thai with a side of string Brussel sprouts and crushed peanuts. This chicken was tender and the squeezed lime over the top gave it a citrus flavor. I also tried the Malaysian smoked salmon and tuna sushi rolled filled with avocado and spicy mayo on top. It was so good. Our server Juan introduced us to the sake choices and told us about a great one to choose. I don’t remember the name of it but it was so smooth and it came in a bottle.
