Loving Your Mate While Staying True to You

Hey, Honeybuns! It's your girl LaTonya MeChelle, coming at you with that warm hug wrapped in wisdom you have been craving Today, we are diving deep into the art of keeping it real with yourself while pouring that sweet love into your mate Because, let's face it, in a world where social media can make us second-guess our own love story, staying genuinely connected to who we are and to our Lovebug is the real power move.

First off, let's talk vulnerability – it's the secret sauce to a love that's as spicy as it is sincere. When you strip down those walls and let your true self shine, you're saying to your partner, "Hey, this is me, flaws and all, and I trust you with the real deal." It's like standing naked in front of a mirror and loving every inch of yourself – it's bold, it's brave, and baby, it's beautiful. Now, let's chat about authenticity. Darling, you are one-of-a-kind, a masterpiece, a stunner! Trying to mimic someone else's love life is like trying to fit into a pair of jeans three sizes too small – uncomfortable and downright unnecessary. You and your love muffin have a rhythm that's unique to you. Embrace it, celebrate it, and for heaven's sake, don't compare it. Your love story is yours to write, not to be copied

Instead of peeking over the fence at other couples, focus on what makes your garden of love flourish Maybe it's your inside jokes, the way you both geek out over comic books, or how you turn the living room into a dance floor on a random Tuesday night. Whatever it is, cherish it, nurture it, and let it grow wild and free.

In the end, being true to yourself and loving your mate fiercely is about balancing your individual sparkle with the shine you create together. It's about being the CEO of your own heart while signing that joint venture of love. It's about knowing that the love you have is as unique as your fingerprint, and that, my loves, is something to hold onto tight.

Stay genuine, stay curious, and keep that willingness to learn from each other alive. Because when you do that, you're not just surviving the love game; you're thriving in it. You're not just lovers, you're life partners, navigating the ups and downs with grace and a whole lot of sass

And let's not forget about boundaries. Loving your mate doesn't mean you lose yourself in them. A healthy relationship is like a dance – you both need room to move. Set those boundaries with love and respect. Know when to say "yes" and when to say "no," and understand that doing so isn't pushing your partner away; it's bringing your true self into the embrace.

So, how do you keep it all balanced? It's simple; stay in tune with yourself. Take time for self-care, for reflection, and for the things that light you up. When you're glowing with self-love, you bring that energy into your relationship. And trust me, that glow is irresistible.

At the end of the day, being true to yourself while loving your mate is about creating a love story that's as authentic as your signature It's about being the director of your own romantic movie, where the script is written by you, for you It's about understanding that while love is universal, the way we live it is as personal as it gets So go ahead, my dears, be bold in your love and authentic in your being. Dance to the beat of your own love song and invite your mate to join in. Together, you'll create a symphony that's too sweet not to be savored. And remember, I'm always here, cheering you on and ready to sprinkle a little extra love dust on your journey. Because when you shine, we all shine. Stay fabulous, stay true, and keep that love light burning bright.

Until next time, keep it sassy, keep it sexy, and always, always keep it real. Love and kisses, LaTonya MeChelle.

The Love We Had

There was a time when your partner was your perfect match, and you could not imagine life without them, but then there are the other times when you feel like you are on two different pages in that once-happy love story. The reality is that people do change, and those changes will make you believe your relationship is in trouble. For some, this might be the jump start your relationship needs to get you back on track.

You have to identify what is causing the issues and who you are mad at. Is it your partner, or is it something else? Sometimes, your relationship becomes the punching bag for other, more significant problems in one's life. Sometimes, your relationship frustrations are just a "safe space" to direct your frustrations to more essential parts of your life.

If you constantly think about being single and daydreaming about that perfect mate, your current relationship is not fulfilling you anymore.

With those troubled waters comes the lack of intimacy, and there are ups and downs in the bedroom department, and those special moments begin to look like a chore you are avoiding, like doing laundry and loading the dishwasher. If you are no longer making intimacy a priority, this is a huge red flag that you two are no longer looking at each other for pleasure.

We have all been there where the relationship was causing just as much stress as everything else in our lives, and the only thing we could do was argue and cry. Let's face it; a failed relationship is a blow to the ego, especially when you think you are doing well and then you get blindsided.

At tim es, I felt that I was on a lousy relationship streak because each one started well and ended with me falling for the representative and not the real clown, unmotivated mentally and financially broke, no-good man.

Relationships do not always last, but some are worth working on and getting things back on track, otherwise, you part ways and value what you have learned during the time together. The fundamental rule is effective communication, the same way you can praise, you must be able to verbalize the displeasing part too.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: What has inspired you to pursue writing and filmmaking?

UNTAMED: When I first began pursuing writing, it felt like a gift from God because, initially, it was more of a hobby, but gradually, I felt an increasing urge to do more. This inkling kept pushing me towards publishing, and I found myself seeking signs, wanting to be absolutely certain of my path. I prayed for guidance, asking for clarity on my direction. A pivotal moment for me was when my husband was watching an award show, and Tyler Perry's words struck a chord with me: "You know you're meant to do something when you try to leave it alone, but it won't leave you alone." That night, I made a decision—I would write a book and become a published author. And so, my journey truly began. Now, transitioning into film felt like a natural progression. Like many others, I dreamed of seeing my work on the big screen. So, working as a production assistant, then as a writer, and eventually as a producer felt like stepping stones towards my ultimate goal. It was a simply logical path for me to take in pursuit of my dreams.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: What do you enjoy most about writing?

UNTAMED: The creative aspect remains the most fulfilling. Whether crafting intricate characters in writing or seeing my work come to life on screen, the entire creative process ignites my soul. Making decisions, watching actors breathe life into my words, and witnessing the fruition of my ideas it's a thrilling journey that fuels my passion. So, without a doubt, the creative process will always be the highlight of my career.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: What was your biggest challenge throughout your journey?

UNTAMED: Time! It's a constant struggle. Each day feels like a race against the clock, and there never seems to be enough. This feeling resonates with me deeply, especially considering I juggle multiple roles. Balancing my responsibilities as a wife and mother and pursuing selfcare alongside my professional endeavors can be challenging. I often find myself wishing for more hours in a day to give each aspect the attention it deserves. It's a tough pill to swallow when you know you have to sacrifice sleep sometimes. It has become all too common as I try to meet the needs of everyone and everything. If only I could squeeze 48 hours into a single day, I'd feel like I have enough time to tackle it all.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: Who was your biggest influence in film?

UNTAMED: I found great inspiration in Tyler Perry's journey, but the people in my circle also served as significant sources of motivation. Witnessing individuals who, like me, started from ground zero and embarked on their paths in independent filmmaking was truly inspiring. Many began as fellow authors, and now I see them successfully transitioning their books into film. Collaborating with figures like N'Tyse, who was once my agent and now a partner in film and book projects has been exceptionally fulfilling. Observing the unique journeys of those around me, working alongside them, and witnessing our collective dreams materialize has been uplifting and empowering. Helping others achieve their goals while pursuing my own has been a beautiful and rewarding experience.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: As the final installment of “The View” approaches its release, could you provide insight into this project and what readers can anticipate?

UNTAMED: Jokinly, I always say they can expect: "The End of this journey." Without a doubt, this project has been brewing since 2016, so it's about time to tie up all loose ends and bring everything to a satisfying conclusion. What readers love, and perhaps hate about this series is the drama it brings, sparking intense discussions and debates over various characters and scenarios. With this concluding book, readers can anticipate character growth, long-awaited reveals finally coming to light, and some major plot twists that will leave them reeling. While it's bittersweet to bid farewell to these characters who have become a part of me, I'm thrilled to give readers the resolution they've eagerly awaited.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: Now you also wrote a book with N’Tyse called “Soldiers of Love,” what was the vision behind this story you guys created?

UNTAMED: "Soldiers of Love" was a collaborative project that delves into the journey of two individuals whose childhood friendship blossoms into a complex adult love story. Exploring themes of friendship, love, and life's challenges, "Soldiers of Love" is steeped in 90s nostalgia and spans the characters' lives from their early years to adulthood. It's a coming-of-age tale with emotional messages about love, friendship, and coping with life's struggles. While it touches on sensitive topics like teen pregnancy and broken homes, it ultimately celebrates resilience and the power of love to overcome adversity. Working on this project was a labor of love for Tyson and myself, and we're immensely proud of the final product.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 10

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: Now, you co-wrote the script “Dishonorable” with Briana Cole. What was working on that project like for you?

UNTAMED: Oh, it was an incredible experience. It was the second movie I co-wrote, but collaborating with Briana Cole was amazing. The process was beautiful, albeit with a humorous twist. We faced some challenging weather conditions during filming, forcing us to rewrite parts of the script on the spot. It was a unique experience for me because, typically, in the writing process, you have numerous passes and discussions in a writer's room with your co-writer. However, there's no luxury of time or extensive brainstorming sessions on set. It's all about quick decisions and adapting to the situation on the fly. I had to ensure that the changes we made fit seamlessly into the current scene and didn't conflict with other parts of the script. It was a fun challenge, one that I embraced and conquered.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: What do you like most about screenwriting?

UNTAMED: Being a screenwriter has its rewards, particularly in terms of flexibility and speed compared to book writing. You have more freedom to explore ideas and can often accomplish more in a shorter time frame. Many authors transition to screenwriting because it's a different creative outlet that allows for faster turnarounds while still feeding their creativity.

HEAT SEEKERS MAG: What is next for Untamed?

UNTAMED: As for what's next for me, I have "Without the View 3" set to release on my birthday in April. There's also an anthology project in the works, though I can't divulge too many details yet. Additionally, I'm gearing up to dive back into filmmaking, with scripts currently in development, and I plan to start shooting later this year or early next year. I'm excited about what lies ahead in my journey.

Thank you for sharing your time with me, and until next time, keep making those bold moves in film and literature. Stay connected with Untamed @authoruntamed.com. Also, head over to Tubi and watch all of her great movies.

“The Spotlight So Prodigy”

An interview with Rapper “Diktator The Leader”.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, and I was extremely excited to be interviewing one of the most gifted, talented, extraordinary rappers this world has ever heard. Not since the incomparable Rakim, LL Cool J, Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls, has an artist given us real lyrics that make us want to move our bodies and make us think simultaneously. This talented prodigy has toured with Master P and has opened for T.I. His latest “Regular Joe” project came out on February 9th, 2024, and it’s already catching fire!

I poured myself a glass of wine, and he got his drink of choice, and we had an awesome time chopping it up. Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce to you.. Diktator The Leader!

Here’s how it all went down…

Nayomi: I read your bio and saw that you’ve done some magnificent things with Master P, Romeo, and other heavy hitters like T.I. How did you get started in your music career and what inspires you?

Diktator: “Well some of the people you just named right there were an inspiration but what got me started, you know was when I was six years old and I used to keep a journal. Instead of writing about my day or how I was feeling, verbatim, I would write them in rhymes, like poetry at a young age. My mom was like “Wow, he’s doing more writing than talking. I didn’t know I was mastering a skill that I would have and grow to love. A skill that helped me with my mental health. It’s all about fulfillment at this point. Creativity is a big tool. In third grade, we were taking an integrated test. One of my friends sent me a note with a rhyme on it. He asked me to send it back to me and combat what I sent you. So we were sending notes back in forth with rhymes and that’s when I was introduced to rhyming. I would go in my backyard and write whole songs in my head.”

Nayomi: “So would you say that as you were writing, you knew you were going to do this as a career? Something you would put your all into?”

Diktator: “At the time no. It was just something that I grew to like. I sought it out and I was good at it. So, I was like hey why not keep doing this and get better at it? I had a little rap group in elementary school. I wanted to be the best, so I started studying hip-hop, videos, wordplay, and formats, and it just went from there.”

Nayomi: Can you share some of your major musical influences and how they shaped your style?

Diktator: “Ice Cube was a big part at the beginning. You know he was a major figure back then you know. How he pronounced his passion and delivery captivated me. I’m kind of all over the place. But as far as who pretty much shaped me into becoming The Diktator I am today. Crazy from the 504 Boys called me. I already did a song with Crazy that was a remix to a song called “Start a Fight” for my first album called Shut It Down. We had already done a song together before and that’s when we started becoming best friends. You know, we became close. This year became 18 years of friendship.”

Nayomi: “That’s amazing! A lot of people don’t stay friends that long.” Diktator: “They don’t. You know, a couple of years later, he just called me out of the blue and said they want me to be the president of this new label called “No Limit”. When can you fly out to California? My quick response was “Today!

He said ‘We can’t fly you out today, but we can tomorrow. I flew out the next day and Master P pulled up in a Range Rover with Romeo in the passenger seat. They popped the trunk and put my bags in there. The first place we went to was Popeyes Chicken. Popeyes wasn’t in the Carolinas then, so you know I got a bucket of chicken and went straight to the studio and straight to work. I was able to witness how Master P’s grind was and how stable he was in his career. He was still hungry, still wanting more. He worked like he didn’t have all he had. He was never comfortable with what he had. He always worked for more. And to see the type of father he is. He didn’t care if they lived in a house in Beverly Hills, those boys still had to take out the trash. Master P shaped my work ethic and independent grind in me but once I did a single called Cat Boy with him I was featured on the soundtrack to the response of the movie that he produced. The movie featured Katt Williams and Michael Blackson. I was on the soundtrack, and it was nationally distributed in Walmart and Target. I think about when I first got started in music, I was doing everything everybody else was doing. I was talking about my father's lifestyle, my hood, my friends, my peer's lifestyles. It was shoot em’ up bang, bang, like the same old thing. When I got back from California, I realized the power of my words. I didn’t want anything to come back on me. I understood what it meant to be true to yourself. I would rather keep my soul intact, keep my happiness and stay true to me.

Nayomi: We recently celebrated 50 years of Hip Hop and real creativity is no longer being honored. Whatever Hollywood deems as talent is what we have to listen to. I always admire underground rappers because they take the time to write their rhymes and they make sense What would you say to someone who wanted to start a rap career?

Diktator: Their ears are wired differently. Unfortunately, things are portrayed in a negative light and women are treated like tools. Entertainment is just a kind of escape from reality but don’t, try to listen to it and have it embedded inside you. Don’t take it for face value because 9 times out of 10 artists are not living that lifestyle of a real millionaire. We see the stacks of cash and the popping of bottles and blowing money when we should be saving money. I must think my purpose is to create that balance between negative and positive energy. The main message is to stay true to yourself whatever the truth is. Hold true to yourself. I don’t put anybody down for however they feel. If it’s true to you, I respect it and you’re not trying to be like anyone else. I don’t try to be like the next man because I stand firm on the fact that nobody can be the best me. Your only competition is yourself. The people who are outwardly competing and looking at other people will never win. That’s what I’m trying to convey. I just posted something about being a gangster is cool but it depends on your definition of gangster. I have two boys and taking care of my responsibilities, putting priorities first. At one point I got caught up in social media and real life was not matching up to what is being portrayed on social media. I had to take a step back and get my priorities together. I’m prepared for whatever God has for me. I always thank him for the blessings I can see and the blessings that I can experience now and I thank him in advance for the blessings I do not see in the plans he has for me. I’m listening to him and letting him guide my steps.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 13

Nayomi: Yes, I’m so glad you said that! The labels get these young men and women out of the hood and offer them a record deal with little to no talent and then on top of that they are given a sign-on bonus of more money than they have ever seen in their life. They don’t realize what they are going to have to do to keep that money and make more money. They don’t realize that that money is only an advance and after that work is put in, more than likely, they will wind up owing more money than that advance they were given. I admired the fact that James Brown wanted to be the entertainment but also know the business side.

Diktator: They know who to offer it to. I never told anyone this in an interview so here is an exclusive for Heat Seekers Magazine Do you remember the Ghetto Boys?

Nayomi: Yes, Bushwick Bill right?

Diktator: Yeah. I went to New York on a major label meeting tour and the label that wanted to sign me connected me to another major label. I was in a cab going to six different labels pushing me as an artist, so it was crazy. So Universal offered me a $350,000 marketing deal around 2021 My manager at the time wanted me to sign right then and there. He was googly-eyed over $350K but something in my spirit told me not to sign it. I said, “Hey let me take this back to Charlotte and have the lawyers look at it.” My lawyer let me know after looking at the contract that the label was only going to spend $10,000 on my project and then pocket the rest and move on to the next artist I wasn’t going to see much or any of that $350,000 at all. When you hear about all these artists being shelved, they signed a deal but that’s the easy part. Anyone can get signed. It’s just a matter of getting signed to the right deal where they push the artists and not shelve the artist. That’s the right situation and possibly the right deal.

Nayomi: Wow! Because a lot of times if someone is offered $350K, they would be ready to sign on the dotted line, not realizing what they’re agreeing to. Thank you so much for that exclusive. I appreciate that. Next question... How do you approach the creative process when writing lyrics and crafting your material?

Diktator: The beat has to speak to me. Sometimes the beat speaks to me immediately and sometimes I have to listen to it numerous times and over time, it may hit me as weird. When I write things, before I grew my relationship with God, I always ask myself, where did that come from, like where did this concept come from? How did I put these words together and how did I paint this picture? And it all makes sense at the end of the day and where did it come from? And I’m at the is the point right now where I let God guide me. If it doesn’t move my spirit, I’m not rocking to it. If the song that artists want me to jump on is not aligned with my mission, I’m not jumping on it, but if it’s aligned and the beat is dope, I’m going to come up with a concept I’ll go ahead and start writing and then the concept will develop by itself, which is crazy, like mind-blowing.

I’m just telling my story and helping people connect the dots for my grind over the years. Letting people know I’m still the same solid dude with the same solid connections and relationships that I’ve always had, and nothing has changed. Don’t let the smoke and mirrors fool you. It’s all love to the love.

Nayomi: So, let’s talk about your latest project. How can people hear it?

Diktator: Okay, I just dropped a single titled ALL Love. It’s been doing big numbers and it’s been on numerous playlists. They’re pitching it for the radio right now. Me and Crazy from the 504 Boys are in the process of shooting a video and then we are going to put it on UK International TV. I’ve also released my second single called “Regular Joe”. It’s about living under your means and staying true to yourself, and my manifestation /goal is to stack a million dollars and still live like a“REGULAR JOE”.

Nayomi: You are about to make me run around this room! So how can people follow you on social media?

Diktator: Follow me on Instagram @DiktatorTheLeader, on TikTok, DiktatorTheLeader and on Facebook, DiktatorTheLeader. Be sure to look on my official website which hosts all my music, my radio, and upcoming music. My interviews where I interviewed Master P, Dame Dash, Rodney Perry and I mean the ist goes on. My website is Diktatortheleader.com.

Nayomi: Thank you for being my special guest today for Heat Seekers Magazine. it’s been a real pleasure.

Diktator: You’re welcome and thank you for having me.

Biddy Mason-A Remarkable Journey from Biddy Mason-A Remarkable Journey from Slavery to Freedom and Community Building Slavery to Freedom and Community Building

Biddy Mason, born into slavery in 1818, is a towering figure in American history, whose life story encapsulates the tenacity, resilience, and determination of African Americans in the face of adversity. Her journey from enslavement to becoming a prominent landowner and community builder in Los Angeles is a testament to the indomitable spirit of individuals who strived for their own freedom and worked to uplift their communities.

Early Life and Enslavement

Biddy Mason was born Bridget "Biddy" Smith in Hancock County, Georgia, in the early 19th century. She was born into slavery on the plantation of Robert Marion Smith, and her life initially unfolded in the oppressive and dehumanizing institution of slavery. Her owner, Robert Smith, moved to Mississippi in the mid-1840s, taking Biddy and the other enslaved people with him.

While in Mississippi, Biddy worked as a midwife, healer, and nurse, skills she honed during her time on the plantation. These skills would prove invaluable in her later life and in her path to freedom. In 1851, she was taken to California by her owner's family, which would become a pivotal moment in her journey to liberty.

Freedom and Entrepreneurship

California, which had just entered the Union as a free state in 1850, was a place of opportunity for Biddy Mason. It was on the brink of the Gold Rush, and as the Smith family relocated there, Biddy saw her chance at freedom. California law at the time provided a pathway to freedom for enslaved individuals who had lived in the state for an extended period. When Biddy Mason discovered this, she took her chance.

In 1856, Biddy Mason petitioned for her freedom and won her case. She became one of the first African American women to gain her freedom through the California courts. Biddy did not stop at securing her own freedom; she also helped others escape slavery and attain their liberty.

With her newfound freedom, Biddy Mason took on work as a nurse, caring for the sick and injured in Los Angeles. Her skills were highly regarded, and she soon began to save money. She invested in real estate and became one of the city's earliest Black property owners. Biddy's entrepreneurial success grew as she expanded her real estate holdings and became a philanthropist, supporting her community through acts of generosity and service.

Community Building and Philanthropy

Biddy Mason was not content with her personal success. She played an instrumental role in the establishment of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church (FAME), the city's first Black church, and she later founded the city's first Black-owned child care center. Biddy's dedication to her faith and her community led her to become a prominent figure in the church and a symbol of the strength and determination of African Americans in Los Angeles.

In 1872, Biddy Mason donated the land on which FAME was built, and her legacy endures through her contributions to the church's founding and the support she provided to countless families in need. Her commitment to social justice, community building, and philanthropy continues to inspire people today.

Legacy and Remembrance

Biddy Mason's legacy is a beacon of hope and perseverance. Her journey from slavery to freedom, entrepreneurship, and community building serves as an enduring testament to the strength and resilience of African Americans throughout history. Her name is remembered not only as a symbol of triumph over adversity but also as a reminder of the importance of lifting one's community and striving for a better future.

Today, Biddy Mason is celebrated in Los Angeles through landmarks, monuments, and an annual Biddy Mason Day. Her story remains a source of inspiration, reminding us that individuals can overcome the most challenging circumstances and, in doing so, uplift their communities and contribute to the greater good. Biddy Mason's remarkable life embodies the enduring spirit of hope, freedom, and community that has defined the African American experience in

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 19
Dr. Velma Bagley
THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 20

Queenie: What inspired you to become an author, and how does your faith influence the themes in your writing?

Dr. Velma Bagby: Writing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I did not consider myself a writer until sometime later. While growing up in church, I wrote skits for the children’s church and youth groups. As a Bible Study teacher, I created content for class discussions, as well as the degree courses for the school of biblical studies. Later in my work life, I designed and developed programs, conducted continuous process improvements, as well as created training modules for new managers. As I look back on my career, I discovered that my favorite aspect of my job as a Deputy Administrator in the State government was my love for continuous improvement—whether it was a program, a process, or a person looking for a career. This experience helped me discover my love for making a program or process more efficient and client driven. Driving this work was my desire to improve the experience of the staff who performed a service, while also improving the benefits a person received after accessing the service.  Later, with my daughter’s encouragement, I wrote my first book after retiring from my state government job in 2012. A Christian non-fiction relationship-focused book based on our conversations about men and in response to their question, “Mom, why are men so slow?” recall my effort to respond to their question, by spending time digging deeper into the scriptures for answers before I responded to their question. I set aside all the ‘how-to’ books in my library and studied the scripture. My two registered nurses were not interested in fluff, and I knew they would expect a more in-depth discussion. It was important that I familiarize myself with what the scripture said about singles and marriage and as a result, discovered some new things I hadn’t seen before.

Queenie: Can you share a specific instance where a reader's life was profoundly impacted by one of your stories?

Dr. Velma Bagby: Many of my readers, interviewers, and podcasters have all stated, that they could not believe the fish analogies, and some said they met all the fish in the stories. One even said she wished she had my book earlier in her dating life. I was shocked to learn of the local senior center, where a woman introduced my book during one of our discussions. The women in that group again shared how they met the fish in the stories.

The one story I was most blessed to hear was the one where the secretary at my doctor’s office was given a book. She told me of a friend she and others were trying to leave an abusive relationship. I suggested she give the book to her friend and suggested she tell her friend to read chapter six. She later reported that she followed through on my suggestion and said her friend finally found the courage to leave.

Queenie: Your commitment to empowering women in their faith and ministry calling is evident. What advice do you have for women navigating their spiritual journeys?

The book became a call to action for single women and it resulted in my messaging to date—to “date with intent,” “date for marriage” and the fact that “marriage belongs to God—we just get the benefit of having a mate.” As we began having regular conversations about God’s process of presenting their mates, with a focus on working on themselves, they found what I shared intriguing and wanted to know more. As our conversations progressed, they shared our talks with friends, and those friends wanted to know more—soon, my daughters encouraged me to put our conversations in a book.

. My debut as an author occurred with my first published nonfiction book in 2018, “Your Adam Is Asleep Until God Opens His Eyes—A Conversation Between a Mother and Her Daughters about Men.” This was my first book about dating, relationships, and marriage. It was a call to action for singles, who focused more on the search for a man than taking time to prepare themselves for marriage, and married couples looking for a reset

Queenie: What inspired you to write Contemporary Christian fiction, and how do you choose the themes for your stories?

Dr. Velma Bagby:  I found Christian contemporary fiction a genre perfect for sharing Christian principles without being preachy, and based on the reader responses, has appealed to those unfamiliar with scripture—in the church and outside of it. In my first Christian contemporary fiction book, The CATCH Series books one and two, I used fish analogies to show the dating mistakes of the charactersthe catfish who loves garbage, the sturgeon who likes to nibble, the salmon who refuses to get caught and the pufferfish who is handsome until agitated.

Queenie: As the CEO of Adoni Publishing, what inspired you to selfpublish your spiritual fiction and nonfiction works?

Dr Velma Bagby: When I began my writing journey, I decided to use a boutique publisher to learn the process. It was convenient, in terms of making payments for the package I chose. I finished the payments before I finished my book. After reading self-help books on publishing and understanding the process better, I decided to self-publish. I not only published my books but helped my granddaughter with her three children’s books as well. Currently, I have 16 books published.

Dr. Velma Bagby: It is never too late to realize your dream. If I can begin my writing journey at age 64, you are not too late. I’ve always been involved in ministry as an Ordained Minister and Women’s Ministry Leader. What I do know is that God will make room for what he has given you to do. If it is to become an author, I suggest you put in the work. Read as many “how-to books” as you can to understand what’s required for the genre you plan to write. Read books of others within the genre you are interested in so that you can learn from published authors. This is not an island experience, connecting with other authors for support and to learn is helpful. Sign up for their blog, especially if they blog about the writing journey. As with anything concerning ministry, stay true to what God has given you as your passion. It will never grow old, and you will never get tired. Always seek his wisdom and ask him to connect you to the right people along the way and keep you from the wolves/hustlers out there. Be consistent in what you have been given and approach it wisely, with dedication and honor.

Queenie: What do you hope readers take away from your Contemporary Christian fiction novels, both in terms of entertainment and spiritual reflection?

Dr. Velma Bagby: I love writing about dating with the intent to marry, love, and marriage. I’ve spent 30-plus years counseling and ministering to single women in pre-marriage and marriage counseling, and I found some of the same problems surfacing over and over, which couples could have avoided if it were taught to them. It all points back to the training churches at one time provided but has all but gotten lost. I feel writing books on these topics serves to fill that need.

Scriptural, we are told to teach wisdom to those coming up after us. I chuckled when looking in the mirror recently, at 68, I recognize that I’m now the Titus 3 woman.

Queenie: With over 30 years of counseling and coaching singles, what inspired you to write a relationship-focused book for single women?

Dr. Velma Bagby: I experienced multiple stages during my journey. It is my practice to pray about the book topics and the order in which to write them. At the start of each year, I keep a list of ideas and apply Proverbs 3:6 which states “In all your ways acknowledge him…” The original language's meaning of acknowledging is to invite in. I consult with God when choosing the order of my projects and what I should tackle first. I had not written about dating, relationships, and marriage since I released my first book in 2018. At the beginning of 2021, I prayed to God, “God, what should the topic of my next book be?” After that prayer, I heard my husband speak a message to the single women at the church one Sunday. What he said stuck with me, “If the fish aren’t biting ladies, it’s time to try a different bait.” Although I assumed this would become the title of my next book, it did turn out to be the subject matter.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 21

Next, I had to figure out if this book would be Christian fiction or nonfiction when it came to the question about the genre. Many in the Christian community rejected fiction stories. My answer arrived when I browsed through a friend’s blog post. A post provided me with an important reminder, it referenced the fact that there were over 50 parables written by Jesus and we know that the parables, considered allegories today, are fiction stories. I sought a distinct answer, and then realized I would craft my book as Christian contemporary fiction, weaving my stories in the style of Jesus. Jesus drew on everyday objects and experiences to explain his stories, helping the listener to connect with them. His stories were never preachy, but woven in his stories is the opportunity for redemption or change. In the end, it was up to the listener to decide if they wished to change Now comfortable to write a fiction book, I called my brother as a part of my research because he is a fishing expert. I asked him to share his favorite fish to catch and the details concerning what it takes to catch them. My brother shared the details about each fish: where they are found, the bait used, and their unique personalities. I immediately associated them with a specific male character in my book: the catfish, who loves garbage; the sturgeon, who likes to nibble; the salmon, who hates to get caught; the pufferfish, who is handsome, until agitated. With book three, I used insects, animals and a toy as the female characters who represented the wrong women men should not date.

Queenie: How do you strike a balance between incorporating Christian values into your narratives while ensuring your stories are engaging and relatable to a broad audience?

Dr. Velma Bagby: By weaving biblical principles in the stories like the parables Jesus’ told. Creativity isn’t stifled by the Christian values I weave into my stories. Because I’ve met many of these characters in my life, it’s easy to create the stories which will resonate with the readers.

Queenie: How has your 48-year marriage influenced your approach to counseling and mentoring others in their relationships?

Dr. Velma Bagby: We celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on February 16th. The scripture encourages those who are seasoned in years, like in Titus 2, to teach the younger. It also encourages everyone to be open to instruction and wisdom from those who can provide it. I’m asked regularly how my husband and I made it this long. After answering the questions multiple times, I realized what my husband and I have been blessed to achieve, should be shared with others so they can experience a long-term marriage, too.

Queenie: How do you engage with your readers, and what kind of feedback or responses have you received from your audience regarding the Christian themes in your fiction?

Dr. Velma Bagby: I shared some of their feedback in my answers above, but here are some specific ones.

Book One:

“The use of fish analogies was genius.” Chandra Sparks Splond, West End Publishing, LLC

“The 5 different types of fish/men is something to behold. I will be purchasing one for my co-worker because she is dating a catfish. LOL!”

Stubbornbull

“Tackling everything from intentional dating to open/honest discussions and discoveries about faith, the book really does show that to CATCH the right one we have to make sure we have gotten ourselves together first.” Cyrus Webb Presents/Conversations Live

Book two:

“…While reading the WRONG CATCH, I encountered a largemouth bass and I recognized it because of this book. This is a great book for single or married people...” Marsha

Book three:

“This book had me on my toes from start to finish. I will never look at microwaves again in the same light!” Jacquiline

“Whoa! You came out of the gate with golden nuggets for men. I am purchasing some books to give to my son’s friends, who are dating. The men in there cutting up! First chapter.” Wendy

Queenie: How do you balance the roles of a pastor's wife, mother, and grandmother while maintaining a vibrant and impactful ministry?

Dr. Velma Bagby: Writing or ministry does not take precedence over my husband and family. I’m always aware of where my priorities lie. Although I am called to write, this assignment has its place and I learned to use times that are the least busy for me and write during those times.

Queenie: As a relationship coach, what common challenges do you observe in relationships today, and how do you incorporate your faith-based perspective into your coaching?

Dr. Velma Bagby: There is danger and misery in choosing outside of what God wants for us. I’ve seen it personally when ministering to singles or speaking with couples. It’s like having over ten keys on a key ring, but only knowing where two or three of the keys fit. God has given believers the keys, but we do not know what keys we are to use to unlock a certain door. Or we attempt to use the wrong key on the wrong door. And some simply do not know how to use a key. I love writing about dating with the intent to marry, love, and marriage. I’ve spent 30-plus years counseling and ministering to single women in pre-marriage and marriage counseling, and I found some of the same problems surfacing over and over, which couples could have avoided if it were taught to them. It all points back to the training churches at one time provided. Preparation is key and waiting until pre-marriage sessions is too late to ask those tough questions. Even the life skills we were taught in high school are important and so many enter a marriage without any life skills at all I feel writing books on these topics serves to fill the void, training once filled. God describes his word as wisdom and, through it, provides believers with wise guidance. He also calls the person who does not accept His wisdom “a fool.” The Bible has plenty of stories of people who failed to obey and warnings about the consequences they suffered because of disobedience. In my book, there are two metaphorical stories where we see firsthand the tragic outcomes of wrong choices. We make wrong choices, and it is very prevalent today, but thank God for his grace and mercy, because it is important to note that there is always room for redemption—change. Readers will see redemption for the book’s character Veronica, and we can see it in the Bible story about Ruth and Boaz. Ruth’s first husband died—this can also represent the removal of someone or someone who is no longer in your life. Once removed, God blessed her when He sent the second husband, Boaz. Queenie: Can you share any upcoming projects or endeavors that you are excited about?

Dr. Velma Bagby: I’m excited about upcoming collaborations, new events, and opportunities to speak on the topic I am compassionate about. I have some marketing products designed which I cannot wait to share, from book club kits to a Deck of Fools – a fun matching game, which uses cards full of those fool scriptures I referenced in the book and more.

Have you ever tried this local Latina Restaurant in Georgia called BOGA? It’s located At 5942 Buford Hwy #193, Norcross, GA 30071.

Recently one Monday before my Focus Forward with Robin Show in Atlanta, I traveled to meet a friend who wanted to introduce me to the favor of the Latin lamb chops at this welcoming cuisine place.

We sat at the bar and to my left you could

see a large window where the three Chefs that day did their magic.

I had the 10oz oven roasted rack of lamb that was marinated with rosemary and house secret recipe served with a Drizzle of Balsamic Reduction. As a side dish, I had the mofongos that consisted of plantains that was embedded with fried plantains & greens mashed together with salt, garlic, and olive oil. The flavor of the lamb chops were tasty and tender but I wasn’t a fan of the mashed mofongos.

However, I also did have a few pieces of my friends sushi the Nijao rolls that was rolled with cooked teriyaki pollo -aka chicken, Philadelphia cream cheese, bacon, aguacateaka avocado, plantains and white sushi rice & seweed.

Not sure what the white drizzle was but it was very tasty. So if you don’t eat raw fish aka sushi, but would like the idea of eating it, this is the perfect dish. Mexican Chips & salsa was also served. I am a huge fan of raw fish served the authentic way called sushi but this dish was served warm and with a great taste.

On the weekends I’m told they have the bongos playing with the band members and the place has a great environment.

The owner “Tito” also served me a sample of the bean soup as us Americans call it pinto beans but with juices. I could taste the flavors it was so delicious! It had different spices and the cilantro was strong which I loved. The only thing missing was the home cooked country cornbread.

This restaurant place services various cultures but is known as “BOGA Latin Cuisine.” It is definitely a must try if you are ever in the Norcross Georgia area.

LET’S JAZZ IT UP! LET’S JAZZ IT UP!

WITH BRENDA MOSS WITH BRENDA MOSS WITH BRENDA MOSS

HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 30

Teresa B.: What persuaded you to go into the radio profession?

Brenda Moss: Matter of fact has been nine years. And I started off in 2014. Due to a friend of mine. She was doing Blog Talk radio.com and giving gardening tip on her platform. I was always tuning in to her platform and she said Brenda you will make a good radio host.. I said, I don't know and it took me to the end of the year of 2014 to start loading things up and getting things together. I set up everything for my studio. I was so excited. I recorded interviews. Some people I would go to their house and record an interview and then put it on block talk radio. I interviewed a boxer. He was blind so I had to go to his house. It was very challenging and then all of a sudden my platform blew up. It just took off. I'm not the kind of person that likes taking photos. So I always stayed behind the mic. I am so much of an introvert. So I'm really trying to come out of my shell. But 2014 was the beginning and around 2015 people started to notice me,

Teresa B.: What kind of interviews were part of your platform back then?

Brenda Moss: Mostly music And books of course and I had you on my platform. I interviewed a lot of artists that had books that were featured. They first came out with their book And I only got to read part of the book, but when I got to interview them, they gave some of the features in their book. I mean I guess we were really trying to get people to listen and buy their book. And the music artists I had on my show.

Teresa B.: Nice, okay and back then because it wasn't well-known did you know of your competition or did you have access to other podcasters where you could learn from or listen to?

Brenda Moss: Yes, I had a couple of friends that were also on the Blog Talk Radio platform. I had a lady friend. I call her my BFF. She's been on blog talk radio or podcasting for several years under her belt and I learned from her. And when you're a podcaster or rather your radio host you have to develop your own personality and your own character. You can't be like someone else or do what they do. You had to develop your own. Character or personality, per say, But I took tips and suggestions. And I'm not good at asking for help. I sit back and observe and watch. Everything dropped in my lap, and I had to go with the flow and learn it on my own. As far as training and looking at YouTube videos, I didn't do all that. I had to naturally learn on my own.

The Heatseekers Magazine Exclusive Interview THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE 34 GLENN JONES

Glenn Jones is best known for his smooth R & B Lyrics with such songs as “We’ve only just begun”, “Show Me”, and “Here I Go Again”. “I’ve Been Searching” and “Here We Go Again” reached #1 on the Billboard R & B charts in 1991 and 1992.

Teresa Howell: Mr. Jones, tell us how it all started.

Glenn Jones: I started a long long time ago. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. Came up in the church singing gospel from the time I was about five years old. I formed a group called The Modulations. I started writing songs when I was about 14 years old and recorded a couple albums. My first album was produced by Rev James Cleveland. The second album by a guy named Norman Connors who heard some of my gospel work and wanted to meet me and asked me to be a part of his new project. He was doing an album called Take It to the Limit. He had a song called Melancholy Fire that I was featured on. He released the single on Arista records at the time and release the record and my song Melancholy Fire was the second single from that project and the record kind of took off. It went to top 15 or something like that and then I got an offer from RCA records and did my solo debut R&B record with them and just stayed with RCA for a couple of records then went to Jive for a couple of records and then went to Atlantic Records. The rest is history as you say.

Teresa Howell: Okay, and how old were you at that time?

GJ: When I signed with what RCA? I had just turned 21.

Teresa Howell: how was it being in the music industry at such a young age?

GJ: It was great because it was what I always wanted to do.I just felt like it was an opportunity that I prayed for and it's been great. I mean, everything has its peaks and valleys, but I wouldn't change a thing.

GJ: When I was doing gospel, I had an older brother. I mean, I come from a large family, a family of nine. I was the youngest one of the family and always had big brothers, and my two older sisters to be there for me. When I was traveling doing gospel, two of my oldest Brothers, they were like my chaperones. They drove and took me all over the country, supporting me and helped me get equipment, transportation. It was just great. So once I finished the two gospel albums that I did, I met a lady named Louise West who was an entertainment lawyer from New York. She heard my gospel music and she was the one to introduce me to Norman Connor. So once I got with her, she was like a mother's hand, so when I moved to New York, I had some support there because she was practicing law in Manhattan.I was always fortunate enough to have people like Louise, in my corner.

Teresa Howell: Okay, and can you tell us of one of your most memorable experiences while traveling on the road?

GJ: I got quite a few of those. I remember getting a call from Aretha Franklin asking me to come to Detroit to sing for her birthday party. I remember meeting Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach asking me to do a record with Dion and Burt. I was living the dream.

Teresa Howell: Okay, and when covid hit? How was the music industry for you? Everyone has a different experience, but how did it affect you?

GJ: I was just stunned! I had never seen anything like that, just as many other people hadn't. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't go on the road for over a year, I was just at home. The first time I did a gig, during covid, was in St. Louis. I had a gig with Carl Thomas. But I was still very cautious and afraid to get on flights and stuff. So I just got in my truck and drove from Atlanta to St. Louis and did the gig. It felt good to be back on the stage and I just took it one day at a time.

Teresa Howell: Yes, that was an experience that I don't think any of us will ever forget but the only good thing I could say that came out of that is that all the celebrities were sitting at home so I could interview everybody.(laughing)

GJ: Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah (laughing).

Teresa Howell: Right, right and so being in the industry that young did you have someone come with you? When you went to did you have a mentor or a family member that kind of guided you throughout or did you just find out everything on your own?

Teresa Howell: But other than that.. So, if you had to choose two people that you've never worked with before but would like to work with on an album. Who would it be?

GJ: I probably would say, Lela Hathaway and maybe Musiq SoulChild?

Teresa Howell: Wow, okay. That would be dope.

GJ: Yeah.

Teresa Howell: How long have you lived in Atlanta?

GJ: I moved to Atlanta in 2015?

Teresa Howell: Okay. You have to let me know when you do a local show so I can come out and see it. During your music career, changes have been made, for the digital world of music. Has that affected you any? We don't have CDs and other ways to distribute music outside of being on stage. How do you feel about the digital industry now?

GJ: It's really different, back in the day. I enjoyed being able to go to the record retailers and going to the distribution places to meet the people that were putting the music out. It's different because the industry has really turned independent, which means that in order to do your projects you have to fund them yourself. You don't have a team of promotional reps, running from one station to another, to promote new records. I think some people miss actually holding the physical product, being able to read the credits and the notes and that kind of stuff. It seems that in order to really make money from it, you have to have a zillion downloads. it's different but, one good thing about it is that you get to do the kind of record that you want to do. You don’t have someone sitting in that seat telling you what kind of record they think you should do. People that have never written a song in their lives telling you what you should do. So I enjoyed the freedom.

Teresa Howell: Okay. Do you write most of your music?

GJ: Yes, I write most of it and co-write with some of my friends. So I've been doing that, forever. I've been writing since I was 14 years old.

Teresa Howell: Oh Wow, talented, talented. So what are you working on right now?

GJ: Well, actually, I just dropped a new single. I covered a song called I Want To Be Closer, which is an old song by the group Switch. I believe they released that record back at 78. It was written by Jermaine Jackson and Gregory Williams from Switch. The single has been getting some really great reception. Tell all you folk to go to whatever sites that they like to download and get the new single by Glenn Jones and Eric Nolan. Eric Nolan is from The O'Jays. He's been with them for 28 years, I believe. We figure another cat named Tony Exum Jr. Amazing sax player, and I think you'll enjoy it.

Teresa Howell: Okay, and do you have any other projects that you're working on? Any plays, movies, any other music projects?

GJ: I do have an EP I’m working on called Love By Design. It's a really great project. I have a song on that project with Regina Belle, the title track Love By Design. I have another record that featured Nick Colionne, a Jazz player. He played on it and then I have two songs that I can’t think of right now. Two duets, it's pretty much what people expect from me. , have a couple of songs that are for the steppers. Chucky Booker produced two songs on the album, so yeah…

Teresa Howell: Nice, nice. So, if you gave advice to the music newbies, what would you tell them?

GJ: I don't know what advice I can really give them because it has changed so much as I said before. I would say be on top of your business, because it is the music business, and just try to be true to who you are as an artist. I mean people always try to dictate and tell you what type of music to do, but I think R&B It's forever. It's classic, and I think that a lot of the new music that we hear now it's been a part of. the classic R&B. The vets, the veterans, that have done great music, it's like It never dies. You can take it and kind of do it, with some new type Vibes, maybe drum loops and all that kind of stuff, samples and all that but the real music, great melody and great lyrics - I don't think that's ever gonna change.

Teresa Howell: Tell us how can we reach you if we wanted you to sing at a wedding or you tour how could we reach you?

GJ: You can get me at Instagram @realGlennJones. I don't have a Facebook page anymore because it was hacked and I haven't been able to reestablish my page. I had hundreds of thousands of people following me on Facebook, but somehow I got hacked and Facebook has not been any help for me to get it back. You can get me on tiktok.
