A Difficult Diagnosis to a Life Changing Experience

According to the CDC, gestational diabetes is a disease that affects nearly 10% of women every year. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. It affects how your cells use glucose, causes high blood sugar, affects the health of your baby, and according to Molly Christenson: “A pain in the butt! Actually no, it’s a pain in the finger!” During pregnancy, the placenta connects the baby to the blood supply and begins to produce high levels of hormones that impair the action of insulin in your cells and raise your blood sugar. This is

why pregnant women normally experience small amounts of elevation in their blood sugar after meals. When an expectant mother is diagnosed with gestational diabetes, the placenta produces too many hormones, which can affect the growth and welfare of the baby. Last year, Molly Christenson of Sioux Falls received some shocking news. During a regular prenatal checkup, Molly was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. “At first I was freaked out,” said Christenson. “I knew this meant me and my child were at risk for type 2 diabetes so my first concern was knowing how to protect my child.” Christenson did a lot of reading, journaling, fasting, finger poking, and marking glucose levels, but she’s

ultimately thankful for her doctor and the dieticians, who helped her family eat healthier. Molly gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Tenley, weeks before her due date. Tenley’s lungs were not fully developed at birth and she was very jaundice. “She had to be put on an IV, feeding tube and oxygen after birth,” said Christenson. Now at 14 months old, Tenley is babbling and learning how to stand. When it comes to offering advice to other expectant mothers, Christenson says its about leading a healthy lifestyle sooner rather than later. “Whatever weight you can lose before your pregnancy is a bonus,” said Christenson. “If you want to lose weight, you really need to look at what you eat because not all calories are the same. Also, pay attention to portion sizes.”

9

While the diabetes diagnosis was scary, Molly looks at the situation in positive way. “My life has changed!” said Christenson. “Not only do I feel so much better now, I’m also looking better.” Christenson has gone from a size 12 to a size 2. While it was definitely a challenge in her life, Molly believes that it has changed her for the better. n

All You Need to Know

It can be hard to find time to exercise after you have children. Heading off to the gym isn’t so simple anymore and keeping your little one entertained while you burn calories on the elliptical can be a challenge. This is why many parents are buying jogging strollers. A jogging stroller allows you to start exercising again and safely take your little one with you. Here are a few things to look for when purchasing your jogging stroller:

Tire size: Jogging strollers have three inflatable tires that can be found in several different sizes. Bigger wheels will allow you to make bigger strides and reduce the resistance. It is suggested that 12” tires be used for smooth paths, 16” tires for running along, or cutting through grass, and 20”+ tires for frequent off road use. Swivel front: Many jogging strollers have a fixed front wheel, which allows for more stability and helps joggers stay on a straight path. For those who wish to use their strollers in crowded spaces like the mall, some parents find the swivel front wheel easier

baby

Jogging Strollers:

11

to maneuver in cramped spaces. It is important to note that while many swivel front strollers come with a locking feature, they typically only come with 12” wheels.

Foldable: Struggling to fold your jogging stroller can be a workout in itself, so make sure you are able to easily fold your jogging stroller before you make a purchase.

Durable: Buying a jogging stroller is often a bigger investment than purchasing an ordinary baby carriage. If you’re going to pay more, it’s important to insure that the product will last. Some strollers come with plastic wheel locks and foot rests, consider opting for the metal versions instead. n

Developing Coordination Cultivating Lifetime Fitness

Sports activities allow kids to burn off their energy, stay fit, make friends and have fun. However, before you decide what’s best for your child, it’s important to consider an activity your family feels comfortable with and one that will help them learn skills that will carry over to other areas of their life. “Learning sports at a young age will certainly help develop hand eye coordination,” said Brian Prisbe, General Manager of the SCHEELS IcePlex.

Brian became involved in the sport of hockey when his two boys played the sport, both as a parent and coach. “If you want your son or daughter to excel in sports it is good idea to get them started early,” said Prisbe. Most kids start playing introductory sports between the ages of four and five. Hockey can be a great option because of the versatility. “Hockey teaches teamwork and before you can be a good hockey player, you become a good skater. Both teach coordination and endurance,” said Prisbee. Developing coordination at a young age helps children compete and have fun with kids their age, but it’s also important to consider the risks.

“One risk in starting your child in a sport at a young age is possible burn out,” said Prisbe. “This can fall on the parent. Let your son or daughter help choose their sport and help ensure they enjoy the sport they are playing. Don’t push it.”

“The benefits and fun with having your child in a sport like hockey make it a great extracurricular,” said Prisbe. “In addition to gaining coordination and a love of sports, your child will be more likely to pursue lifetime fitness and learn how to work and play well with others.” As a parent, knowing you’ve done your research and allowed your child to help in the decision-making, you can sit back and relax on the sidelines and watch your child learn and grow. n Information from Brian Prisbe, SCHEELS IcePlex

Tips for Co nsig Kids’ Clothning Your es

As children play and grow, it’s likely their clothes will soil, tear, or seem to shrink. Instead of blowing your budget with full price items each time you have to replace a piece of clothing, start your search at consignment, or thrift shops. You’ll likely find items that not only fit your kiddos, but also allow you to involve your child in selecting items. You may even be able to purchase a few more items than you would have been able to at full retail price! Follow these tips as you learn to navigate the world of consignment shopping and help make it a positive experience for you and your children.

Shop often Unlike regular retail, the inventory of consignment shops fluctuates and changes daily. There are always new items coming!

Plan ahead Like other types of shopping, it helps to go in with a list. Check it off as you go, so you don’t get sidetracked.

Make it a learning opportunity Shopping is a great time to teach your children financial responsibility as well as practice simple math skills. Set a budget and discuss it with your children. Have them help you calculate approximate costs throughout the trip.

Check online As quickly as consignment has risen in popularity in the Sioux Falls area over the past few years, online consignment is growing in use even quicker! Check

out online sites from the comfort of your home and as often as you’d like.

Know your brands It helps to be familiar with your favorite brands, or those with the highest quality and popularity. These items will go most quickly from stores, and it helps if you are able to spot them.

Check items for condition Although most stores have standards and requirements for items before they agree to consign them, it doesn’t hurt to keep a close eye on your chosen items’ condition. Check for small rips or stains before making a purchase.

Empower your children Depending on the age of the child, you may want to start including them in wardrobe choices. Perhaps you can let them select three shirts from five you’ve deemed budget and wardrobe appropriate, or maybe even choose their own selection of summer sandals from the lot! n

We hope these motivated moms can help you break through the barrier and get on track to having more energy and a better life balance. >

Chelsea VanLeur Why did you want to take part in the challenge? I realized that most of the time I was feeling down about the way I looked or felt. This attitude soon carried over to my family. I told myself I had to make a change soon! This is when I saw the ad for the Mommy Gets Fit Challenge through ‘Hood Magazine and thought it would be a great opportunity for me. This challenge has motivated me and helped me gain the passion to get healthy.

What has been your favorite part so far? My favorite part so far is the diversity in the workouts that Circuit Fitness has to offer. I like that every time I go to work out, I can guarantee it will be something different that will work different parts of my body. I love that! I have worked parts of my body that I have not worked in a long time, or never for that matter.

Why is this important to you? This is

Fun Facts: Lost five inches overall Cut two minutes off her mile time Decreased body fat by 5% Strength! Went from 11 push-ups in a minute to 40! “I was extremely pleased with Chelsea’s results,” said Jordan Mitzel of Circuit Fitness. “She burned lots of fat and replaced it with lean muscle mass.” Chelsea is a third grade teacher in the Brandon Valley School District. She enjoys bike riding and watching baseball with her husband and three children. As a working mom, Chelsea put her health on the back burner and decided it was time to make a change.

important to me because I want to be a good role model for my children. I’m able to educate them on how to make good and healthy choices when it comes to fitness and eating. I would get tired and sluggish very easily and my kids noticed that. I find that I have so much more energy and can keep up with them now.

Advice for other moms: I would tell them that they can do it! Before I started this journey I kept giving the excuse that I can’t find the time with a full time job and three kids, but YOU can. You just have to find the right balance that works for you. I also think that it is important to find a group of workout buddies that are supportive and encouraging. This has helped me stick with it.

Why did you want to take part in the challenge? I wanted to start exercis-

I am not really internally motivated for fitness, so I thought Mommy Gets Fit would be a great motivator to keep me honest. Knowing that my results would be published and that my progress would affect an entire group, kept me going.

What has been your favorite part so far? I have really enjoyed the workouts, which surprises me. I have never been one to exercise. I have also never been a morning person, but I have not yet had a hard time getting out of bed to go to class at 5 a.m. No two classes are the same. I also like that I don’t know what we are going to be doing until I get there. That way I don’t dread going on those cardio days! It is also nice to have different instructors. Each instructor motivates me differently.

ing so that I would have more energy to play with my kids and to have an overall healthier lifestyle so that I could feel better and be a better role model for my kids.

Keffeler

Why is this important to you? I want to teach my kids healthy habits and promote wellness in their lives. The best way that I can do that is to be a good example. I am also guilty -like most other moms out there- of not taking time for myself. When I started at Circuit Fitness, that all changed. I now make time to focus on me for those 45 minutes each day.

Advice for other moms: It is well worth it! I have never been a morning person but for me, morning workouts work well. I don’t feel guilty taking the time to do it because the kids are still sleeping. I also find that I am able to be more present with them when I have taken the time for myself. This has helped me stick with it. September 2015 | thehoodmagazine.com |

Jackie Stewar t Why did you want to take part in the challenge? I wanted to take part in this class and the challenge because I have tried every other diet known to man and none of them work long term. I was also tired of depriving my body of food all of the time. My weight would go from thin to fat in a matter of months and my closet was full of things that only fit for a brief moment in time. I am not what you call a “work-out” kind of girl but I thought…why not, I’ve got to do something!

What has been your favorite part so far? You never know what you are going to be doing from day to day and every workout is different. I also like being told what to do. It’s hard for me to go to a gym where I pick what to do with my time. I don’t know how to use most of the machines and usually end up just running on the treadmill. That’s all good, but this works all your muscles, and I mean ALL of them, especially the ones I never knew I had.

Why is this important to you? As my daughters get

Fun Facts: Lost six pounds Cut three minutes off mile time Decreased body fat by 6% “Jackie is fun to have in class because she is the person who would always doubt that she could do certain things”, said Jordan Mitzel of Circuit Fitness. “Yet once she started, she would always accomplish the task.” Jackie is married to her high school sweetheart, Chris. They’ve been married for 14 years and have two daughters. Jackie is an executive administative assistant. She stays busy taking care of her family and their dog named Dewey, who bonds with Chris as the only other male in the house.

older I want them to feel comfortable about their bodies and I want them to know the best ways to stay fit. I don’t want them to believe that in order to be fit, you have to be skinny and starve yourself. They are watching my every move and in this day and age it is so important to teach them confidence and give them the tools to succeed, and that includes loving their bodies.

Advice for other moms: Just do it. When the workout is done, I feel so much better about myself, because I did it. I have learned that being skinny does not mean that you are fit and being fit doesn’t mean that you have to be skinny. I may not be the skinniest I have ever been, but I know that I am in the best shape of my life and that makes me feel great!

Why did you want to take part in the challenge? I was really apprehen-

What has been your favorite part so far? The friendships I have made. Everyone is very supportive and really cares about how you are doing. The instructors are very approachable and you are able to ask any questions about diet and fitness classes. They don’t make you feel stupid!

Advice for other moms: You have to make time for YOU!! It’s so easy to get caught up in all of life’s activities. This class is not just about body fitness, it’s also for mental clarity. Ask for help! Get a neighbor to watch the kids for an hour, or drop the kids at a friend’s house. There is always someone who will help!

Amanda Henning Why did you want to take part in the challenge? I took part in this challenge to give me more drive and focus towards my goals. To show others moms that they can do it too!

What has been your favorite part so far? My favorite part has been feeling better. I come home from my workouts with energy and I am ready for the day. I love the excitement my kids have for me as well. They are always wanting to hear what we did in class and are so proud of me.

Why is this important to you? It is important to me because I want to set a good example for my kids and make activity and healthy eating an important part of our lives. I want to be that good example for them so they make the good choices as well. Advice for other moms: My advice would be to make time. Finding time was hard for me as well. My husband has a crazy work schedule, which was a challenge for me to make it work. But, it is worth the sacrifices!

Amanda works for the Brandon Valley School District. She enjoys spending time with her family and going to her kids’ activities.

by Dr. Christine Duncan, D.C. and Chiropractic Acupuncturist from Lanpher Chiropractic

The term “acupuncture” is a common term to some, but may seem taboo to others. Acupuncture has been around for centuries, but has become increasingly popular over the last few years as alternative health care and now plays a major part in the health and wellness world.

Acupuncture is extremely relaxing and is very rarely painful. The needles are very tiny and stimulate the body’s own systems to regulate and help restore proper function. It has been shown to help problems as varied as seasonal allergies, joint and muscle pain, sleep disorders, headaches, digestive disorders, depression and anxiety, sciatica, and addictive behaviors as well. The ancient theory behind acupuncture’s effectiveness is that it helps to align the body’s natural energy flow and promote better health. It makes sense for chiropractors to offer acupuncture as a complimentary service to help naturally balance all of the body’s systems. There are certain protocols that are used in acupuncture to help with addictive behaviors such as eating/food addiction. This can greatly help with weight loss and problems with overeating or emotional eating. To re-center the

brain through corrective acupuncture, the mind should be able to calm down those excessive thought processes that are going on unchecked. Depression and anxiety can also play into these problems. So the “weight loss” protocol for an acupuncture treatment includes points to help with those feelings as well. It is a very well rounded treatment, and can have great benefits if the patient is in a motivated state of mind when they start treating.

Get Cravings Under Control with Acupuncture

Usually a clean eating diet is recommended at the same time to act as a supportive measure, and to encourage the patient through this time of changing eating behaviors to lose weight and manage addiction to food/eating. Depending on the practitioner, the scheduling of acupuncture treatments can vary, but one example would be 8-12 sessions over the course of 3 weeks during the clean eating period, then 3-6 supportive sessions after other foods are re-introduced into the diet. The “side effects” from food addiction acupuncture are: fewer cravings, more energy and feeling full faster. It also helps patients make better choices when eating and feeling more energized to stay active during the program. n

Getting Started with

Essential Oils

The use of essential oils is endless and has been around for centuries used to heal and rebalance the body. There are many life-enhancing benefits of essential oils and with so many brands and varieties available it is hard to know where to start. If you are ready to test the waters, we recommend starting with the three basic essential oils: peppermint, lavender and lemon. These three oils can be used in a variety of ways from soothing a small child with allergies to everyday cooking. Not all essential oils are ingestible, so be sure to check labels and find a brand that fits your need and lifestyle. Lemon: Simply add lemon oil to your everyday water to refresh and give you or your child a healthy boost throughout the day.

Peppermint: Great to use for colds or allergies. By placing a few drops of peppermint on each side of your neck, or adding it with lavender to your diffuser at night, these oils help to open your airway allowing for less congestion and a more peaceful night sleep. Also commonly found in oral health products, place one drop in your mouth to help freshen breath. Peppermint repels bugs naturally so apply topically or spritz around windows and doors.

Oregano: A single essential oil to have in your collection placing it with fractionated coconut oil on the bottom of your feet will help boot your immune system. It is also a great precautionary habit to simply add one drop to your water when seasonal allergies are high.

Basil: Promotes mental alertness and lessens anxious feelings so it’s great to diffuse in your child’s

room to promote a sense of focus while studying or reading. You can also massage basil with wintergreen and carrier oil on back of neck for a stress-relieving experience.

Lavender: Widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities, lavender can be used for peaceful sleep. Freshen your linen closet, mattress, car, or the air with a light mist of lavender combined with water in a spray bottle. You can add to bath water to soak away stress or apply to the temples and the back of the neck. Melaleuca: Renowned for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, melaleuca can be used on the skin after shaving, or applied to fingernails and toenails after showering. For occasional skin irritations, apply one to two drops of melaleuca essential oil onto affected area. Whether you are looking to relieve pain, stress, or just seeking natural remedies, essential oils are a great way to bring health and harmony into your home. n

What do fitness and farming have in common? SUSTAINABILITY.

37

by Dawn Scheier

My name is Dawn Scheier and I farm with my husband Pat. When I’m not busy on the farm, one of my favorite hobbies is long distance bicycling. This past year, I participated in a cycling event called Ride Across South Dakota (RASDAK). This year, we kicked off the ride in Spearfish and finished seven days and 480 miles later in Milbank. When I am biking, my goal is to cover the distance without falling behind or exhausting my resources. It is important that I put the right nutrients in my body for it to thrive and remain healthy over long periods. Eating wellbalanced meals is an essential part of riding. I’ve always believed in the saying, “you are what you eat,” and if I am falling behind the pack it is usually because I did not eat a well-balanced diet.

time. It’s very important that the decisions my family and I make about what we do with our land are guided by sustainability. Just like our bodies, plants need proper nutrition and care to grow and thrive. That could mean adding nutrients through fertilizer or even eliminating bad influences like weeds. On our farm, we make choices based on our goal of having the land remain healthy over many generations, which is the true definition of sustainability.

I think of farming in a similar way. In both exercise and farming you need to have the ability to maintain or support an activity or over a long period of

TECHNOLOGY

I want to share a little bit more about our farm and some of the core tenants of sustainability.

Nobody likes waste. Waste is bad for the earth, bad for farms and bad for profits. On our farm, we need fertilizer to grow corn and soybeans. And because bugs and weeds will kill and destroy our crops if we let them, we need products to combat them to make sure those crops thrive. Because of this, we use software and advanced guidance technology on all our equipment. Tools like these help us determine the exact amounts of fertilizer and pest-management products necessary across the various parts of our

fields. Just like women and men require different blends of vitamins and nutrients to remain healthy, different parts of a field require different modes of protection. Then, using self-driving tractors with the same GPS technology you use on your smart phones, we make sure those fields get exactly what they need, not a bit more. In the years that I’ve been farming, we have seen large improvements in this area, and we can’t wait to see what the next big step in technology will be.

LAND MANAGEMENT Soil erosion and water runoff are also bad for farms and for the environment. On our farm, we make many decisions to ensure that the soil in our fields remains there, and that the nutrients in that soil, like nitrogen and phosphorous, also remain there after heavy rains and winds.

SUSTAINABILITY. (continued ) First, because South Dakota winds are very severe, we install shelterbelts, which are rows of trees at the edges of our fields. These belts provide shelter against the wind and prevent soil erosion while protecting our crops. Another thing that controls erosion and runoff is our use of buffer strips and grassy waterways. We structure our fields so that they have these wide strips of grass and greenery between them, which act like a kidney after heavy rains. The buffer strips will slowly catch and filter rainwater so nutrients don’t flow downstream, while also keeping our vital topsoil where it belongs.

CONSERVATION PROGRAMS We are blessed with abundant wetlands in South Dakota, and we believe that preserving them for butterflies, honey bees and other wildlife is crucial for our community, our farm and for the planet in general. That’s why we participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Resources Conservation Service and Conservation Reserve Program efforts. In these programs, government experts work with us to help us preserve our wetlands. Every decision about how to manage drainage and rain water on our property is made in consultation with these experts, who have the best knowledge on how best to preserve these ecological treasures.

These groups are an excellent resource to ensure that we continue to enhance the things we do on the farm to protect it for the future. To sum it all up, I am just like any other mom trying to do the right thing by recycling, reducing waste and eating right. My cycling demands it. My family and I are also want to do provide the same for our farm and our crops.

Notes: If you are going to be grilling the main entrée put the beans on while the grill is heating up to get them going. The beans will get some extra time on the high heat before you move them aside for the main dish. When I open the grill lid to flip the main dish I usually

will give the pouch a shake, or stir. It will take the beans about 20 minutes to cook depending on your grill.

On-the-Go Nutrition Keeping Your Busy Family Healthy and Happy

Sitting down all together at the breakfast table eating a hearty and nutritious meal sounds like the perfect way to start the day. But in reality, mornings more often than not consist of a mad dash out the door. This means breakfast is usually contained in a pre-packaged wrapper, or forgotten altogether. It’s been said before, but breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day. Making smart choices for your first meal not only gives you a great start but can also help you make good decisions throughout the day. But how do you make good decisions while you’re running out the door? The key is to be informed. Check out these popular quick breakfast options and see the pros and cons of each.

Granola bars- It sounds healthy, and they can be, but beware of the granola dipped in chocolate or full of ingredients that can make them as high in sugar and fat as some candy bars.

Cereal bars- It all depends on which ones you choose. Read the labels carefully and look for ones made from whole grain and low in fat. Plus sometimes those made with “fruit” are really made from highfructose corn syrup or juice concentrates.

Diet bars- These are meal replacement bars and are aimed at helping adults lose weight. The ingredients vary widely and while some are low in calories and saturated fat, others are not. Protein bars- These tend to contain more protein and other nutrition than some of the other bars listed. They tend to be low in sugar, but they are made for

40 |

September 2015 | thehoodmagazine.com

adult athletes who need the protein to sustain long bouts of intense physical activity, not kids.

Energy bars- These are also marketed to adult athletes not kids. Most energy bars tend to be high in calories and contain a mix of carbs and proteins. Some may include caffeine, which can cause side effects like jitteriness and difficulty sleeping. The key to any of these quick meals is to read the labels and not just the packaging. Words like “all natural”, “low carb” and “whole grain” might sound good, but that doesn’t mean they are good for your family. When it comes to breakfast bars, everything in moderation is a good rule of thumb. Try to make more meals together and be a good role model for you family when it comes to healthy eating. n

Fit FamilyVacations

Yes, of course it is! Taking time off for vacation does not mean taking time off of your healthy lifestyle.

1 - Resist the urge to splurge. Those allinclusive trip and cruises are so tempting! All you care to eat and drink, any time, night or day. Ordering a poolside frozen beverage can blow a good portion of your calorie intake for the day. All those desserts; they’re everywhere! A bite or two will do the trick to satisfy that sweet tooth at the end of a meal.

2 - You are on vacation, get moving! You are probably going into foreign territory. Go check out the scenery, stroll along the beach, go for a swim in the beautiful hotel pool, get the kids up early and go for a hike or bike ride. Get active with your family - it’s the perfect time.

family

You just booked your winter escape. You are so excited to get away. You are so motivated to look and feel your best in your new swimsuit. You try watching what you eat and make it a priority to exercise. Now your vacation is here. Will you throw in the towel on all those months of preparation it took to look and feel your best? Or will you continue on the path of a healthy lifestyle while on vacation? Is that even possible?

41

3 - Do your research. A host of resorts offer fitness classes these days, and even paved trails around the resorts. Schedule a time each day for exercise and make it a priority.

4 - Try to get some sleep. Who wants to exercise when they are tired? Moreover, we tend to make poor choices in general when we can’t think clearly.

5 - Cut yourself a little slack. Let’s be honest: I don’t know too many people who lose weight on vacation. If you do happen to overindulge, it’s not the end of the world. Simply get back on track when you return home. n

Helping Children Develop

Healthy Habits

Teaching children healthy habits can seem, at times, like your family’s pile of laundry: you work on it all the time, but it’s hard to see any notable progress. The key to success with building healthy habits is having children practice the habit consistently, whether it’s wearing their bike helmets, washing their hands before and after meals, or brushing their teeth. “Hopefully a good habit will develop and stick so that it becomes part of the child’s routine,” said Doniese Wilcox, Certified Family Life Instructor at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. Here are some tips to help your children form healthy habits:

1. D o: Develop good habits at an early age. Starting healthy habits when children are young is especially important because of the cognitive development that takes place at those ages, explained Wilcox. Toddlers and 3-year-olds are concrete thinkers. The way things are done are the way things are done all

44 |

September 2015 | thehoodmagazine.com

the time. When you buckle up, kids expect it to be that way all the time. “Hopefully as children become abstract thinkers later, and they start to question the way things are done, the habit will be ingrained enough that they keep doing it,” Wilcox said.

2. D on’t: Nag. Instead, teach. Nagging children to do something isn’t very effective. Instead, teach your children in a positive way. Also, get involved. For example, double check that your children brush their teeth and wash behind their ears.

3. Don’t: Give out rewards for everyday actions. Use caution when rewarding children for

on establishing the action as a safe habit that everyone does.

they quit doing it.”

for your child, go ahead and use them — just don’t overdo it.

One creative way to manage picky eaters is to have everyone take a “thank-you bite.” “We can say that everyone in our family takes a ‘thank-you bite’ to thank mom or dad for cooking the meal, the grocery stores for having the food, and farmers for raising the food. Anything new, you taste that and make a decision,” Wilcox recommended. n

- Doniese Wilcox

4. Do: Model good behavior. If you’re asking your children to do something, like wearing their seat belt or bike helmet, make sure that you model the good behavior. “If you don’t, they get the message that this is something only kids, not parents, do. Then when they’re older, they might abandon the action,” Wilcox said. Work

Children Staying Active

With Grandparents

“Again, Grandma…again!” My 5-year-old daughter has her Grandma wrapped around her little finger. Those big blue eyes looking up and pleading Grandma to go down that waterslide just one more time (or two, three…you get the idea). Grandmas just can’t say no! There may have been a few sore muscles after that weekend of hiking up waterslide stairs, but that memory shared with her granddaughter will last a lifetime. We want our children to learn the importance of fitness early on in their lives and try to incorporate a healthy balance of physical activities into their daily routine. It goes without saying that young children are naturally active creatures, so the real challenge lies in determining how to best funnel that energy into something positive and worthwhile. And as grandparents grow older, an active lifestyle is more important to their health than ever. By encouraging grandparents to model healthy habits for our children while spending time together, we are helping both generations more than we know. The grandparent-grandchild bond is second in emotional importance only to the bond between parents and children, says Arthur Kornhaber, author of The Grandparent Guide and founder and president of the Foundation for Grandparenting. And an intergenerational analysis conducted by the Legacy Project finds that children need at least four to six involved, concerned adults to interact with them on a regular basis to fully develop socially and emotionally. As we look to our parents and grandparents in encouraging time together with our own children, what does that ‘quality time’ look like? There are thousands of activities to keep kids moving while not draining all of Grandma’s energy afterwards!

46 |

September 2015 | thehoodmagazine.com

Here are some simple fun ideas to hand over to Grandpa and Grandma:

• Explore. Take a walk, hike, or bike whenever possible to explore the neighborhood together. Take time to smell the flowers!

• Scavenger hunt. Make a list of things to find during an outdoor nature walk outside depending on the season.

• Dancing. Who better to teach them the Hokey Pokey, line dancing, or their favorite dances when they were young?

• Play Wii. If it’s a rainy day, break out the Wii. It has fun options to get all generations up and moving.

• Plan a vacation together. We recently returned from a vacation, which included four generations of my family. It was surprisingly easy to find activities we could all do together. Prioritize intergenerational relationships for your kids while keeping Grandma and Grandpa on their toes. Everyone wins! n

For any busy parent, being on the run can leave you exhausted at the end of the day. Sometimes, you may feel like there is no time to go to the gym. Luckily, there are simple steps you can take to work on your fitness right at home. James Lemke, of Lemke’s Fitness and Training says the first step lies in proper nutrition. “You can’t outwork poor nutrition habits,” he said. Beyond nutrition, there are many simple exercises you can do at home, with minimal equipment. Lemke suggests staying active with these activities, or a bit of cardio, for at least 30 minutes every day.

parent

Simple Workouts At Home

2. Planks To perform planks place the forearms on the ground with the elbows aligned below the shoulders, and arms parallel to the body at about shoulder-width distance. If flat palms bother your wrists, clasp your hands together.

Here are three simple ways to stay active at home:

3. Lunges 1. Dips Dips are done by placing your hands with fingers facing forward on a chair with your arms straight. Lower your body until your shoulders are below your elbows. Push yourself up until your arms are straight again. Proper dip form is key to avoid shoulder and chest pain. Don’t shrug or let your shoulders roll forward. Keep your shoulders back and down. If you can, keep your legs straight out in front of you.

To work out with lunges, keep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up (pick a point to stare at in front of you so you don’t keep looking down). Always engage your core. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle and push back to the starting position to do these in place. To add some flavor to the exercise you can hold on to a gallon of water or a similar object to intensify the exercise. n

Easy (and Free)

Ways to Burn Calories, No Gym Required! Our lives have become far more sedentary in the past 100 years. We spend far more time sitting than we do in activities that require some exercise. Finding ways to increase the intensity and frequency of your daily activities can make a big difference in your overall health as well as your waistline. It’s the little changes that will make the biggest difference. You can burn hundreds of extra calories throughout the day without setting foot in the gym! • Need to pick up a few things from the store? Instead of driving, take a walk to the store instead. • Increase your speed as you walk the dog. • Standing instead of sitting. Whether you are at the DMV, cooking dinner, on the phone, or at your computer. Choosing to stand will burn about 20% more calories than if you were sitting. • Run up and down stairs instead of walking whenever you have the chance.

•C arry loads of laundry up and down the stairs. • R eplace your office chair with your exercise ball. You need to engage the core muscles to maintain stability and this will help to strengthen those muscles. •C omplete a thorough cleaning of your home for 30+ minutes. As you vacuum, mop the floors, and wash the windows, continuously increase movement to be faster than your usual speed. • E very week, garden and mow for 30 minutes each. In the winter, shovel snow and offer to shovel for your neighbors as well. • S wap the car for your bike a couple times a week. • Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator. • Always park in the farthest parking spots. You’ll burn more calories just by walking to your destination. n
