I love planning parties for my kids each year. We always start with a theme and then focus everything around the theme. Even though our party is months away, the theme this year is ‘Paw Patrol.’ I have always turned our parties into more of a family barbeque with inflatables, lots of food and guests. I love to make the party more about everyone and their families instead of focusing only on the kids. I’m excited for you to see this year’s birthday issue. Planning the

With so many fun ideas when it comes to planning the perfect baby shower, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the process. Here are some tips to help keep the planning purposeful. Aside from the basics of choosing a date, time, number of guests and getting the invites and party preps together, there are so many meaningful ways to celebrate.

Décor: When planning décor, take into consideration the baby’s nursery décor and find ways to use items that can be repurposed once baby arrives.

Keepsake activities: Choose a few different craft options for your guests to participate in, such as; wishes for baby, a thumbprint canvas guest book including the thumb prints of all the guests, or a baby headband for a little girl.

Cards: Encourage your guests to make a card for each of your child’s birthdays. Once guests arrive, they draw a number and take part in a craft activity to create a card that will be given to the child for the corresponding year. Every year, there will be a special card for them that was created before they were even born. Food: Not sure what to serve? Find a family tradition type of meal that brings meaning to the celebration. Think of easy to serve items that don’t require much prep. Foods from the palm or your hand and served at room temperature are best. n

Traditional crate paper and balloons are also making a comeback, but they’re being integrated with floral designs and geometric shapes to give it a fresh look. No matter what you decide for your child’s first birthday celebration, the most important thing is to make it memorable. n

The Perfect Amount of Cake

Let’s be honest…there’s no such thing as too much cake! However, when planning a birthday party it’s always smart to order an amount of dessert that will ensure a slice for everyone, while allowing you to stay within the party budget and not have leftovers for days after the big event. With the following simple steps, you can easily order the perfect amount of birthday cake for your party! Before finalizing a birthday cake order, you’ll want to consider a few party details. First, have a look through your guest list to determine the types of attendees who will be at the party. Younger children will typically eat a smaller slice of cake than older kids and adults, meaning at a party with lots of little ones, you will be able to get more slices than may be advertised for a particular cake size. Next, think about the type of menu you’ll be providing during the event. If the cake will be served after a full lunch, you can scale back the number of servings a bit. However, if you plan to simply offer snacks and dessert, you may want to consider ordering extra cake servings to ensure your guests are satisfied! Finally, determine if the cake will be the only type of dessert at the party, or if you will also offer an alternative, such as cookies or candy. Most guests hope to enjoy something sweet at a birthday party, but with additional dessert options, you can often lower the total number of cake servings.

To put these steps into practice, consider the following formulas: For a party that is offering a full lunch, plan on approximately one-half serving of cake for each child under the age of five and one serving of cake for older kids and adults. If your party will include snacks and dessert as the only food, increase the cake quantity to one serving for small children and one-and-a-half servings for the older guests. If you plan to have additional types of desserts at the party, simply replace one serving of cake with an equal serving of another dessert, such as one cupcake or two small cookies. If you have cake leftover at the end of the party, you can easily save if for a later date by first setting the unwrapped cake in the freezer until it is fully frozen (approximately 1-2 hours). Then wrap the cake tightly with plastic wrap and place into a plastic container. A frozen cake will store well in the freezer for up to three months. Or, you can simply enjoy any leftover cake once the guests have left…you’ll deserve it! n

Everyone loves cake at a birthday party! How about making a ‘sponge cake’ to celebrate the occasion and have a craft for the kids to enjoy and take home with them? This is a great project for any occasion and your kids and their friends will love decorating their cake however they like!

Supplies needed: Large yellow sponge, cut into triangle pieces (The dollar store is a great place for these!) Puffy paint to “frost” * To make puffy paint, mix white glue, washable paint and shaving cream. Mix up and spread on to your sponge. Use sequins or glitter to decorate your slice of cake!

Helpful Hint: A little fun hint, you can find these paper doilies and plastic spatulas in the cake-decorating aisle in most stores for about $1.50 each. They’re very reasonable and there are endless possibilities of things you can do with them! If you don’t have these items, plastic spoons or knives work great for decorating your piece of cake too! n

Allergy Friendly Birthday Parties

As birthday party festivities become more elaborate, they have also become more complex due to the increasing number of children with food allergies. This is largely because food tends to be the center of any festivity in our culture. Fortunately, it’s very possible for party planners to navigate this and provide a fun and safe event for all partygoers by keeping a few things in mind.

Communication is key:

Avoid the allergens:

Include a note on the invitation asking parents to contact you regarding any allergy or other health considerations you should be aware of. If you know a child you’re inviting has food allergies, contact their parents directly to discuss how to maintain a safe environment.

If possible, do not serve food containing the allergen. Although it may not be ideal, it’s important to know children and parents of children with food allergies do not want to cause undue stress or upset. The birthday boy or girl’s favorite food or special request can and should be part of the celebration. In this case, work with the child’s parents to determine an alternative for the child and ensure safety.

Invite parents to stay:

Center the focus of the party more around activities than food and consider non-food prizes and treats for games or party favors (e.g. stickers, tattoos, bouncy balls, pencils, etc.).

If you prefer the parents stay at the party, ask! It’s highly unlikely they would not happily accept the invitation, which may reduce anxiety and concern for everyone.

Cleanliness:

By far, the most important consideration is to never exclude a child because of their food allergies. The parents of children with food allergies are aware and strategizing ways to make it work for their children to attend events safely. Their everyday lives include accommodations and precautions. Anything and everything you are not able or comfortable taking care of, they will. Simply acknowledging the presence of the food allergy and expressing interest in helping to make it possible for the child to attend the party safely is the greatest consideration you can make. n

If there will be foods a child is allergic to, be sure to have the children wash their hands after eating and wipe down surfaces the food was served on.

Safety plan: Ask questions! If the child’s parents will not be at the party, be sure to inquire about medications needed, and ask for explicit instructions for intervention in the event of a reaction. Ask, ask, ask until you feel comfortable.

How Do I Know if

I Have Allergies? Spring is upon us. Flowers are ready to bloom, the grass is growing and many people are preparing for allergy season. The typical symptoms of allergies are: • • • • •

Nasal congestion or facial pain and pressure Runny nose Itchy, runny, watery eyes Sneezing Coughing

Most people with seasonal allergies start to notice symptoms in early spring or early fall. Seasonal or environmental allergies can affect children and adults. Typically, people with spring allergies are allergic to trees and grasses. People with fall seasonal allergies are usually allergic to ragweed or other types of weeds. Some people have year-round allergies, which are typically caused by dust mites, molds and animals (pets such as cats or dogs). The best way to identify the specific cause of a person’s allergies is through allergy testing either by skin testing or a blood test. Skin testing is more accurate and often less expensive than blood tests. Allergens are introduced to the skin looking for a positive reaction, which is a small, raised bump over the testing site. There are two types of skin testing: • P rick testing - skin is pricked with a small amount of allergen via a small needle.

• Intradermal testing – small amounts of antigen are injected under the skin.

What is the treatment for allergies? The most common and often best treatments for seasonal allergies are nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines. These treatments are available overthe-counter and are relatively inexpensive, especially in generic form. The generic forms of antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays are just as effective as the brand products. Your doctor may prescribe additional allergy medications if you continue to have symptoms despite using nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines. Additionally, a referral to an allergist may be necessary to confirm your symptoms are due to allergies rather than just a cold or sinus problem.

Can my allergies be cured? Most people with allergies are typically diagnosed at relatively early age. It is very unlikely to develop allergies after age 40. For people with diagnosed allergies, especially if associated with asthma, immunotherapy is an effective way of treating their symptoms and can often alleviate their symptoms completely. Immunotherapy can be done either through allergy shots or drops placed under the tongue (sublingual therapy). Immunotherapy is often recommended for 3 to 5 years and can provide a person with long-term responses in certain cases. n

Birthday Party Decor

Every year, a week before a birthday in the family, we prepare a table with decorations and small gifts to last through the whole birthday week. It’s been a fun and exciting tradition in our home for the past five years now! Each person plans all of the meals for the week and a theme for their party. I plan the decorations and food around the theme. A themed party does not need to be overloaded with matching decorations. If you are throwing a polka dot themed party, you don’t have to go out and purchase everything you see with polka dots on it. Instead, select only a few prominent decorations with polka dots; maybe a banner, paper straws, balloons and a tablecloth. One simple way to decorate and add a little more sentiment to the party is by placing photographs, favorite toys and other mementos around the table. For my daughter’s first birthday I took a long string of twine, a couple hooks, miniature clothes pins, and 12 photos from each month of her first year and made a simple wall display of photos! Invest in a few high quality party supplies and theywill last longer. This could save you both time and money in the future. Some of my most common suggestions are a white linen tablecloth, a decora-

tive punch bowl, chalkboard signs and a pretty cake stand. Bake your own cake or cupcakes. To save time on the day of the party, bake the cupcakes the day before the party and decorate the next morning. Cupcakes can serve as a decoration as well! We like to arrange them on the table to reflect the age of the party recipient. My middle daughter’s first birthday was a rosethemed party. To save money on floral decor, take a bouquet of flowers, separate it, trim it and turn it into several smaller arrangements. Set up an activity table with projects matching the theme - create your own emoji, decorate your own cupcake, build a necklace, decorate a hat, or just have coloring sheets and some crayons for the little ones. If you’re computer savvy, you can find several print outs online to create banners, food and drink labels. You can also create your own in a word document or Photoshop. Another great way to save on party supplies is to plan ahead, wait for a sale, and purchase decorations for multiple parties in one order. n

2017 Family Gets Fit UPDATE We have had so much fun watching our Family Gets Fit winners take on a journey to health and wellness with the help of Koko FitClub Sioux Falls. Landon is getting stronger and leaner. He had a good laugh after someone noticed his muscles and called him a “beefcake!” Heather has lost over 20 pounds and several inches. She’s had a 39% strength gain and finally made it into the Koko FitZone! The Better Body System meal plan has been really workable for this mother and son team. In fact, they even took a weekend trip and planned to indulge a bit, but found the foods that used to be their weaknesses really weren’t even tempting anymore. They’re now in the habit now of eating whole, clean foods! Landon is feeling the benefits of the strength training at his job, as the strenuous physical work is much easier for him now. Heather is noticing heart health benefits! Her heart rate used to jump over 200 as soon as she started any cardio. Now she has to push hard to go over 160. Her resting heart rate is much lower, too. They tell us they’re loving the positive, encouraging atmosphere at Koko. They also just earned their orange lanyards and silver medallions, which means they’re taking their fitness to whole new levels! It’s not quite short sleeve or tank top whether, however living in South Dakota, you just never know! Be prepared with short sleeve tops, cardigans that can be

easily removed and short booties to let some air in with short socks. Accessories, such as jewelry and purses, can make even the simplest t-shirt look dressy. Pair it up with a super cute bootie and you have an outfit for an evening out that doesn’t break the bank! Have you ever noticed floral patterns are always in for spring? Celebrate the warmth of sunshine with pretty, flowery peasant tops. Floral patterns are a great choice because they’re timeless and will not go out of style. Bright colors bring a smile to everyone’s face and help us remember that spring will be here soon. Take those dark winter jeans; pair them up with a light-colored sweater and some fun bright sneakers! The wind can make our winter months seem long, so we tend to keep our sweaters on during spring. Swirling change is a parental reality, and one place where the changes seem to come faster every year is with children’s parties, especially the ones celebrating birthdays. We seem to have gone past the simplicity of the celebration; it used to be a fun time where we’d mark the anniversary of birth, have some friends over and enjoy some cake and gifts. Today’s birthday parties rival some adult-hosted galas. Some appear aimed at creating an unforgettable “once in a lifetime” extravaganza for the child. With so much expectation, the dreaded “child meltdown” can happen. For the most part, all that fuss isn’t necessary. Doniese Wilcox, CFLE, is an educator with Avera Children’s Family Life Education. She says like much of modern life, we’ve gone too far, but we can adjust. “Many parties have gotten out of hand, and even well-intended parents have to remember that most kids won’t remember their ‘unforgettable’ party,” said Wilcox. “That’s OK. That’s how their minds work. But if you have guest goodie bags filled with lavish gifts, gourmet cakes and elaborate decorations, plus a magician or clown, perhaps parents should ask themselves: ‘Who is this party for?’” Some parents go too far trying to one-up another parent’s show-stopping birthday or even compensate for lackluster parties from their own childhood. Wilcox said sometimes, less is more. “You might want to consider a big party every two or three years, and for other years, something smaller with one or two friends,” she said. “Or have a shared party with children who share birthdays in the same month. This can cut costs, and helps parents with busy schedules.”

Wilcox said every child’s temperament is like every child: unique. Depending on their age and demeanor, big parties can be overwhelming. “Sensitive, slow-adapting and withdrawing children may have trouble with a birthday bash,” said Wilcox. “Age is important, too, as kids younger than 4 can have trouble separating, have very short attention spans, and may have scheduling needs for naps and meals that interfere.” It helps to bring the focus back to the child – sleepover versus formal party, number of guests, activities – but it’s always smart to consider your budget, safety and what parties are all about: fun, but for kids, chances to learn. “If you and your spouse are going to have a major fight when the credit card bill arrives, you need to pay attention,” Wilcox said. “Remember, if you’re trying to single-handedly host the party with six or 12 kids – that’s tough. Ask for help. We host our children’s parties in part to teach them about manners. So take some time to rehearse a few lines before the event. It can help.” Make sure your child takes time to welcome each guest, to thank them for their gifts and if needed, work on a cue that can help if the churning excitement of the event gets to be too much. n

Attending a birthday party can be a wonderful and exciting time for children, but it can also be stressful when it comes to appropriate behaviors and social skills. In an effort to help your child be successful when they attend a birthday party, here are some useful suggestions: Review basic manners: “please,” “thank you” and “you’re welcome.” Discuss with your child times when they might use these manners and role-play scenarios as needed. For example: “May I please have a glass of juice?” “Thank you for the piece of cake.” “You’re welcome for the gift.” “Thank you for inviting me to the party.” Review basic manners related to politely declining something they do not like or want: “No thank you, I don’t want any ice cream” versus “I hate that flavor of ice cream.”

Discuss how this is the friend’s special day. We tell the friend happy birthday and help them feel special. Our friend gets attention and presents, not the guests. We let our friend open their own gifts and decide on the activities for the party.

Discuss when we’re invited to a party we participate in the party activities. We join in the games, watch the friend open presents and eat cake with the other guests.

For a child who tends to feel anxious, identify an adult who they could talk to, or ask a question, if they are uncertain about something during the party.

Make sure to involve your child in picking out and wrapping the friend’s gift and making a card. Also let the child pick out, or help pick out, his or her party outfit. This gives them a sense of ownership and investment in the occasion and helps them to feel excited about the party.

Discuss when the party is over we thank our friend for inviting us to the party and wish them a happy birthday. As your child prepares for an upcoming party, you can role-play certain aspects of the party, especially if your child struggles with any particular activity or skill. For example, practice sitting at an appropriate distance while someone else opens a present. Or declining a food item they do not enjoy. And remember to praise your child for a job well done after the party! n

FOOD SAFETY 101:WHAT DOES THAT DATE ON MY FOOD MEAN? Product dates such as “use by,”“best by” or “sell by” listed on food packages can be confusing. When the date on the package comes and goes, does it mean the food is no longer safe to eat and needs to be thrown out? Find out what you should do.

then the Food Safety and Inspection Service requires those labels to not be misleading and include the day, month and year for shelf-stable and frozen products. They also must include a “best by” or other phrase along with the date.

According to the USDA, the date listed on food packages is only meant to be an indicator of quality, not safety. Whether you use a product before or after the date listed, be sure to always check for signs of spoilage before assuming it’s safe to eat. The USDA and other federal regulators do not require food dating labels. It’s up to the manufacturer or retailer to include them.

Some states have their own requirements. For example, some states do not allow for the use of a sell-by date on egg cartons.

While there aren’t federal regulations directing this, excluding infant formula*, manufacturers and retailers often choose to provide a date on packaged and fresh foods. If they choose to include a date,

Sell by - This tells the store how long to keep the product out for sale for inventory management. Use by – This is the recommended last date for a food to be at peak quality for consumption. Dijon CHICKEN KABOBS

Ingredients • 8 bamboo skewers • 2 tablespoons vinegar • 2 tablespoons garlic flavored olive oil • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • salt and pepper to taste • ½ pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips • 1 pint cherry tomatoes • 1 small onion, cut into chunks • 1 green pepper, cut into chunks • 1 (8 oz) container whole fresh mushrooms

Directions Soak skewers in water for 30 minutes.

To make vinaigrette, whisk together vinegar, olive oil, mustard, salt and pepper. Thread skewers with chicken, cherry tomatoes, onion, green pepper and mushrooms.

Brush kabobs with vinaigrette. Grill, uncovered, for 15 to 20 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender.

Grasshopper ICE CREAM TART Ingredients • ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted • 3 cups chocolate wafer crumbs • 2/3 cup hot fudge topping • 1 (1.75 qt) mint chocolate chip ice cream, softened • 12 oz frozen whipped topping, thawed • Chocolate mint curls for garnish

Directions Lightly coat a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom

with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. In a large bowl, combine melted butter and wafer crumbs; toss to mix. Spread in tart pan, pressing evenly onto bottom and sides. Freeze for 15 minutes. Remove from freezer. Spread hot fudge sauce over crust. Freeze for 10 minutes more. Remove from freezer; spoon ice cream into crust, spreading evenly. Cover and freeze for 2 to 24 hours. Just before serving, remove sides from pan and top with whipped topping. If desired, garnish with chocolate mint curls.

Homemade CAST IRON SKILLET PIZZA Ingredients

Crust • ¼ cup powdered milk • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • 1 tablespoon sugar • 2 ¼ teaspoons yeast, one packet • 1 1/ 3 cups warm water • 2 tablespoons soybean oil • 4 cups flour • 1 teaspoon rosemary, chopped

Sauce • 1 can store brand pizza sauce • 2 tablespoons basil pesto Toppings • 1 cup mozzarella cheese • 1 cup parmesan cheese • 1 bell pepper, sliced • 1 cup pork sausage, crumbled • 1 cup uncured pepperoni slices • ½ cup kalamata olives

Roll out enough dough to form a 1/4 to 3/8-inch thick layer in the bottom of a well-oiled cast iron skillet. This will increase when the dough rises.

Now comes the fun part: adding the toppings. Some of our favorites are pork sausage made in South Dakota, pepperoni, bell peppers and Kalamata olives.

Directions

Spray with oil, cover and let rise for about 90 mins.

Add a layer of shredded Parmesan cheese that will melt and anchor the toppings in place.

Crust Mix together the powdered milk, kosher salt, sugar and yeast. Add 1-1/3 cup of warm water, stir and let sit 2 minutes. Add the soybean oil and stir. Switch to a dough hook on the mixer, add 2 cups of the flour and the rosemary. Knead on low speed until the flour mixes in, then add the remaining 2 cups of flour and knead on low speed until a smooth dough forms.

Sauce While the dough is rising, mix up pizza sauce to taste. Feel free to add a spoonful of basil pesto or other Italian herbs to give the sauce your signature flavor. Pizza Preheat oven to 420 degrees. Once dough has risen, spread a thin layer of sauce over dough. Lightly press a layer of mozzarella cheese down into the sauce, taking care not to collapse the risen dough underneath.

Before placing in the oven, put the skillet on the stovetop over medium heat for 1 minute. This is so the top of the pizza isn’t burnt before the bottom of the crust is cooked. Put the skillet in the oven and cook for about 12 minutes or until the top begins to turn golden brown. When done, place the skillet on the countertop on top of a hot pad and let the pizza rest for a few minutes before cutting and serving.

We’ve come a long way since the beginning of grilling.Three to four thousand year-old cooking vessels resemble some of today’s modern charcoal grills and have been unearthed in parts of India and China. After the Second World War ended, the American middle class began moving to the suburbs. By the 1950s, what was once reserved as the way to cook at campsites and picnics was being done in our backyards and is now all the rage. The modern grill was invented in 1952 by George Stephen Sr. While he was working for Weber Brothers Metal Works in Chicago, Illinois, he came up with an idea for a better grill. George cut a marine buoy along its equator and drilled some holes in it for ventilation. One half became the firebox and the other became the lid. He then added a grate and the Weber Kettle grill was born. Grilling would never be the same. Today we have endless choices in grills. There are many different designs, sizes and shapes. All grills fall into three major categories. These categories are charcoal, gas and electric. Each of those categories comes with different designs; for example, a komado ceramic grill and a kettle grill are both designs

of charcoal grills. There are many different brands of each style of grill, as well, and several different sizes to fit everyone’s needs and the flavors they’re looking for. As early American settlers began colonizing this great country, they began creating very distinctive flavors of barbeque. Different areas of the country offer different local woods to burn as well as different meats to grill. With so many possibilities to choose from there are endless results in barbeque. Regardless what type of grill you are using, what type of wood you are burning, or what type of meat you are cooking; have fun and enjoy the ancient tradition of grilling. n

Green Cleaning Have you ever thought about the types of cleaning products you use? Many chemicals used for cleaning can have negative impacts on your health, your pocket book and the environment. For example, some chemicals contain volatile organic compounds, which can make the air pollution in your home up to 10 times worse than outdoors. Also, the fragrance used in these products is typically made from a blend of up to 4,000 separate synthetic ingredients, which we are exposed to by breathing them in or absorbing them through our skin. Phosphates found in laundry and dishwasher detergents are washed into the watershed and cause unhealthy conditions for aquatic life and algae blooms, which turn water bodies green. By making your own cleaning products, you’ll know exactly what is in the products you are using. You’ll

also save money. Chances are, you likely have many of the ingredients needed and you’ll help the environment by producing less waste and using fewer chemicals! Below are a few easy recipes to get you started making your own green cleaning products.

All-Purpose Cleaner 1. M ix ½ cup vinegar and ¼ cup baking soda (or 2 teaspoons borax) into 2 liters of water. 2. S tore and keep in a reusable container.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner 1. M ix 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 cup vinegar, pour into toilet basin. 2. Let it set for a few minutes. 3. Scrub with brush and rinse.

Dishwasher Detergent 1. M ix 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup Borax, and 1/2 cup salt well and store in airtight container. 2. T o use, add 1 tablespoon to each of the two compartments in your dishwasher and 2 tablespoons of vinegar to your rinse compartment. If you have unwanted household chemicals and you live in Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha or Turner county, you can bring them to the City of Sioux Falls’ Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHWF) for free. n
