Meet Our 2022

Educator of the Year Ms. Whipple

welcome

Congratulations Ms. Whipple

We know there are many different things to think about when it comes to education. This year we changed up our directory to include preschool, childcare, private school, and tutoring. Check out all the options in this issue and on our website all year long! It’s time for those Egg Hunts! Visit our Online Calendar to see all the events happening for Easter. And if you are an organization that is hosting an event, you can add it there as well! As I watched the nominations for our 2022 Educator of the Year come in, I was delighted to see nominees who work in various roles inside our schools. Surprising our 2022 Educator of the Year, Marissa Whipple, was exciting! It was fun seeing her family, the mother and daughter who nominated her, and the school administrators be there for that moment! Sanford fit partnered with us to provide her with a great prize package: a check for $250 and $500 worth of Cozy Spot Items for her classroom. The students loved getting to open and interact with those. Make sure to read her nomination, along with all of our other educator nominees, at www.thehoodmagazine.com. Congratulations to Marissa and all our 2022 Educator the Year Nominations!

Learning to Swim Starts with a Happy Place There are two types of people: those who run and jump in the water without pause and those who timidly dip a toe before getting in. Whether you have a fearless child or one who lives a bit more cautiously, getting in the water should be a joyous experience for all. Fear of water is not uncommon, and this fear isn’t just for kids. Adults also experience it for themselves, and even more for their children – both the cautious ones and the fearless ones. Fear usually arises because of lurking danger, both known and unknown. While learning to swim helps overcome fear of water, getting started with swim lessons has its own set of fears and anxiety for parents and child alike. As one dad whose family takes lessons at SafeSplash Swim School put it, “Both of my daughters were terrified to start lessons as they have never been able to put their faces in the water without panicking.”

My boys did so well! In previous lessons at different places, both my boys have cried through the entire lesson. At Safe Splash, they were jumping in and smiling by the end of the lesson. They continue to talk about it at home and are excited about coming back. – Parent of 4- and 6-year-old boys

Things like a positive attitude, a warm/ welcoming environment, capable instructors, and personalized attention all play a vital role in reducing

The intimate class sizes, warm water, soothing music, and well-trained swim instructors make this experience like no other! We came here and in one 30-minute session he’s floating, blowing bubbles, jumping in the water and going under, and kicking. I am so proud of him and his courage.

anxiety and getting someone off to a good – Parent of 5-year-old boy start with swim lessons. With exposure to water in a fun and safe surrounding, fear can be replaced with warm feelings of comfort, enjoyment, confidence, anticipation, and accomplishment. The common theme here in conquering swim lesson anxiety is having a happy place for swim lessons, one where ambiance creates a warm welcome, water fun overcomes fear, confidence replaces anxiety, and swim smiles triumph over frowns. Eighty percent of students at SafeSplash are beginners. But 100% of students leave their lesson having learned new skills and feeling less apprehension. Lessons help children feel comfortable in the water, and when everyone feels safe in the water, swim smiles blossom everywhere.

In addition to regular lessons, SafeSplash is offering summer camps this summer to introduce your kids to swimming or give them a skill boost. Call 605-204-5100 now to learn more.

Getting Your Child

Ready for Preschool

Preschool is an exciting new experience for both you and your child. However, it can cause some hesitation and questions.

Preparing your preschooler

What to expect

•B egin reading books about school a couple months before it begins. Talk about the story and encourage your child to ask questions.

• S eparation anxiety. The truth is that separation anxiety can come in stages depending on your child’s temperament. Taking your child from a familiar place and dropping him or her off in unfamiliar place can raise an anxious and overwhelming feeling.

•P lay school by taking turns being the teacher and the student. Act out scenarios by role-playing. This gives your child an idea of what to expect.

Familiarize your child •V isit the classroom before school starts to ease the fears of unfamiliar territory. • Meet the teacher and be sure to ask questions. • L et your child know it is OK to be nervous. This is a good chance for you to gauge how your child adapts to new situations, people, and places.

Preschool countdown •H ave your child pick out his or her own backpack for school. This will give your child a sense of control and excitement that school is starting soon. •P ut your child’s name on his or her backpack, lunch box, blanket, jacket, shoes, etc.

•U se a “goodbye routine.” It could be a “secret handshake” or wave goodbye out the window as you leave. Avoid sticking around too long as your child will begin to expect your presence for a certain time each morning. •P reschool provides your child with exposure to new learning opportunities and independence as well as peer interactions. If your child is used to being home with you or at a home day care, this gives your child a chance to gain his or her independence, be around his or her peers and build social skills. Preschool can be a frightening time but also a very exciting time for both you and your child. Children love to learn, and preschool is the perfect place for that. l

• L et your child choose an outfit to wear on the first day. It is a good idea to do this the night before so you are not in a hurry in the morning. •B e in bed at a certain time and get enough sleep to be ready for “school.” • Wake up early and eat a good breakfast.

Advocating for Your Special Needs Child at School Having a child with special needs or a learning disability means you will have special responsibilities when it comes to your child’s education. If your child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), you will want to understand your rights as a parent as well as the responsibilities of the school district to ensure your child receives the education and services he or she deserves. In the unfortunate event that there is a disagreement with your school district about what special services are appropriate, it’s essential to know how to advocate for your child’s education. The following are strategies that I have found to be effective when advocating for my daughter Adylin’s education.

1. R ead and Research Special Education Law. Doing so will help you understand that you have power and rights to make educational decisions for your child as a parent. You will also learn the jargon used during IEP meetings. It is easy to think that the other team members are the professionals and that you should leave the decision-making to them, but as the child’s parent, ultimately, you are responsible for your child’s welfare. 2. G ather the Facts About Your Child. Collect information about your child’s disability and educational history. Save everything, including test scores, progress reports, work samples, and communication from school personnel. Make

‘HOOD EXTRA

sure that these documents are organized in a central location, such as a binder, for quick reference. Having good documentation can be invaluable when making decisions about your child’s education.

3. P lan and Prepare for Meetings. Ask the school for copies of evaluations and a draft of proposed IEP goals prior to your IEP meeting. Reading the information in advance will help you to stay focused on what team members are saying during the meeting. It will also give you a good understanding of what the school district wants to do for your child before the meeting takes place. As a parent, you are the best advocate for your child’s education. The law gives you the power to make educational decisions for your child. Understand what rights your child has, and do not hesitate to reach out for help. A good education is one of the most important gifts you can give your child, and your advocacy will help get them the best education possible. l

Offsetting the Cost of College If you are a teenager’s parent, college planning has likely changed since you were a high school student. Long gone are the days of paper forms and requesting things to be mailed to you. Now, with a bit of help from search engines, social media, and your high school counselor or prospective college’s admissions office, applying for scholarships might be just a few clicks away! The college path looks a little different for everyone; some go to a technical school, some go in-state, and some travel far away. Finding the right opportunities may differ for each student but knowing the many options available is important. Do you have an account with your bank? They may have a scholarship. If you attend a church or service club, check with them as well. Two great local resources to check out include Build Dakota Scholarship and South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship. If you are looking at ways to offset higher education costs, many high school students are utilizing dual

credits. Katie Murdy, a local counselor, shared, “taking college credit classes in high school is the other way for students to save money. We have many students graduating in three years because of the number of college credits earned in high school for $40-$48/college credit.” Graduating from high school and moving onto the next phase of adulthood is an exciting time for teens. If college is in their future, know that there are ways to minimize the expense and reduce the burden of student loans.

The Impact of

Parents in the Classroom

Children spend much of their day in the classroom. During conferences, many parents are surprised to learn how different their child is at school versus their experience with them at home. For some families, getting involved at school has positively impacted the child and the whole family. The ‘Hood Magazine staff recently talked with Tekestebirhan Kassaye, an Ethiopian father of six, about his family’s experience with getting involved with his children’s education. “I moved here from Ethiopia in 2008. My wife, Eden, and I have six children, from a newborn to age 12. Back home, I worked as the dean of educational planning and management at a university, so I know the importance of education. As an immigrant family, parent commitment at school is not easy. Many in our community work hard and are unable to get away from their jobs to allow them the time for school involvement. I am blessed with a wonderful employer that provides me the flexibility to make this a priority.

We have been lucky to be involved with our children’s education as it has so many benefits. First, we know the strengths and weaknesses of each child, so we can help celebrate and nurture them. It also provides us with common things to talk about since I know their friends and classmates and what they are learning. Additionally, it allows me to understand their school culture so we can reflect that at home as well. Our children benefit by having other parents in the classroom, allowing them to see and experience other family units and build confidence in interacting with other adults in a safe zone. Not only do the families benefit, but the teachers and school as well. Parents can provide the teachers with assistance so they can focus on teaching. This support increases the quality of education. With parents being hands-on, the children also get exposed to more extracurricular activities. We have been pleased with our education experience here and are fortunate to have found a good system that provides a significant impact on our family.” l

presents our 2022

Educator of the Year Marissa Whipple

2nd Grade Teacher, Baltic School District If we would have shown up the prior week to surprise our winner, we would have found a shark in place of a teacher. Dressing up for Dr. Seuss week is just one of the ways that our 2022 Educator of the Year makes learning fun for her 2nd grade class. Marissa Whipple’s love of being a teacher was evident from the nominations she received. Dani and Kenli, her nominators, shared how she’s not afraid to be silly and gets creative with her lessons, but most importantly, the students know she cares for them. One of the lessons that Kenli learned that she

shared with her mom was, “Miss Whipple says you have to give people second chances.” “One of my favorite things about teaching is having the opportunity to build relationships with my students, their families, and community members,” Marissa Miss Whipple said. “One of the most impor-

tant things I can do for my student’s learning is to get to know them and build a strong foundation for learning. Once I get to know my students, I get to build a family/team within our classroom. We get to be explorers, teammates, researchers, authors, illustrators, teachers, learners, and scientists every day because of the strong relationships I set with my students.” You can see the many adventures she takes her students on, like Classgiving, Animal Museum, 50s Day, Twosday, and Glow Day. Not only do the kids get to have fun during these days, but she turns them into learning experiences that help leave a lasting mark on the students. Marissa is a Baltic graduate herself. When talking about the award, she said that “many of my goals and ambitions came from the teacher role models I had, so I believe this award is thanks to them.” She’s the kind of person that loves to give. Not only does she give 100% in the classroom, but she is also a coach for many activities, serves as a prom advisor, and volunteers in the community. While her students were excited about Marissa’s award, they were distracted by the Cozy Spot baskets. Sanford fit joined The Hood Magazine in surprising the classroom with some great learning tools and activities. “Sanford fit wanted to help celebrate Hood’s Educator of the Year because every day in classrooms across America, educa-

tors are responsible for positively impacting the lives of students through their thoughts, words, and actions,” said Amy Baete. “Educators play a fundamental role in building kids’ resiliency, social skills, and healthy behaviors from the start.”

Winning Nomination “My daughter was blessed to have Ms Whipple for 2nd grade. Marissa spends countless hours creating a fun environment for her 2nd graders to learn in. She does fun science experiments, fun games to learn math facts, a 50’s diner for the 50th day of school, a Friendsgiving celebration & The Polar Express to name a few. She makes sure each kid in her class gets a book from the book order every month. When she’s not in her classroom you’ll find Marissa helping to plan events like prom, coaching or taking pictures at all of the sporting events. Marissa is a blessing to the community of Baltic as well-she helps with the food pantry & also takes pictures at community events.” - Dani & Kenli

try it: Build a Worry Box!

Whether you’re a caregiver or a kiddo, worries can creep up on you, and if not addressed, feel overwhelming. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently shared their concern for children’s mental health, citing a national emergency. If you’re wondering how to help your little take control of their big feelings try a DIY worry box!

WHAT IS IT

HOW IT WORKS

Worry boxes are created as a safe place for kids to put their worries or anxious thoughts. It is a physical way to put worries aside so kids do not have to carry them around.

When kids write down or draw their worries they are naming and containing the concern, which then makes it feel more manageable. Start by creating the box together! Kids will feel more in control if they are the ones to design their very own monster. Start with a tissue box then add fun details to bring your monster to life. Tell the child that when a worry pops up, write or draw it on a piece of paper, then feed it to the monster by putting it in its mouth.

TIPS FOR TALKING ABOUT WORRIES • •
