THIS ISSUE - WORKING PARENT

As a busy working mom, I can relate to what it’s like to have thousands of things on the to-do list. This is one my favorite issues of the year as it allows me to learn from others and get ideas for tips and tricks on how I can improve as a working mom. You can see in my picture from KDLT last month, I was able to showcase amazing gifts from our Holiday Gift Guide along with having my two adorable children by my side. If you watch the clip on our ‘Hood Facebook page, you will see our dog Motley was running around too. When picking out what I would wear from Glamour Defined I didn’t think I would have my kids with me and with the holidays coming I wanted to wear rockin’ cocktail dress! While everything looks good in the clip, what you didn’t see was me changing in the bathroom before we went on and nursing my daughter at the same time. Then I was running around the studio making sure everything was ready, while carrying my daughter because I had just picked them up from daycare and she needed her mommy time. My children were fighting in the bathroom because it was a long day at daycare and they were ready to go home. It’s tough to find a balance between work and family. The best advice another mom ever game me was to outsource the things I didn’t want to do. It’s the one thing that we’ve implemented in our house this year. Spending time with my family is very important and I have learned to let other things go (including having a clean house all the time). I try to find as much time as possible to play with my kids because they will be grown before I know it. I hope this issue gives you ideas on how to be a better working parent and find a balance that works for your family.

First-time parents are met with new challenges every day. While no decision seems small when you’re a new parent, few seem as important as choosing childcare when it’s time to return to work. There are many factors that go into selecting a place to provide loving, safe care for your child. If you consider the following things and ask the right questions, your decision can be much easier. Curriculum sets the tone for learning. Studies show that play is the way young children learn, so make sure you find a provider who uses play as a large part of their curriculum. Children should know that learning is fun! Parents should also look for a place that provides a written lesson plan. Preschool should be planned and deliberate, so you’ll want to find an early childcare provider that is planning for their success through intentional curriculum choices.

Teachers and staff set the tone for the environment of care and learning. Teachers should greet you warmly and make you feel at ease. Ask questions about the experience and background of teachers. Remember, these are the people who will influence and redirect your child (if needed), so you’ll want to feel comfortable with them. Find out how the childcare center deals with redirection or discipline. These policies can look very different from each provider. It’s important you understand what the policy for behavior issues are in the class. Finally, communication is very important. Different centers deliver information in distinct/various ways. It’s important to understand how childcare providers communicate with parents when it comes to daily activities and progress, expectations, staff updates, events and more. Open and clear communication is essential. If you consider these main areas as you tour childcare locations, this somewhat daunting decision can seem much more manageable. n

The problem with these over-the-counter remedies is that the levels of belladonna are inconsistent. Thinking about putting your precious baby at risk unintentionally is scary, especially when using a product that had been deemed safe. It is an exciting time when you see that first tooth arrive in your baby’s mouth, but it can also be a little frightening to see your baby’s discomfort. As a loving parent, sometimes you feel like you would do anything to help your baby feel better. Teething is

a part of every childhood, and fortunately there are safe and easy ways to make it more comfortable for them. If your child has swollen and tender gums, a gentle massage with your finger and offering a cool teething ring or a clean, wet and cool washcloth to chew on, can easily do the trick. Something as simple as a clean, cool washcloth from the freezer can be life changing for your child! Please throw away all homeopathic remedies, and keep your baby safe! n

baby

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently warned consumers to stop use of all homeopathic teething remedies. The FDA is stating these products contain a small level of a substance called ‘belladonna’. Belladonna is toxic at high levels and can cause symptoms such as: seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, or agitation.

Limiting Time in Rock-n-Play for Babies

From the second your babies are born, their little spines are put under an immense amount of stress. Being born and squeezing through that birth canal is extremely difficult, and the term “labor” is not just reflective of the task taken on by the mother. Their heads, necks and upper thoracic spines are twisted and pulled as some of the first moments of “touch” they experience.

cares

We know choosing childcare is one of the most important decisions parents make. That’s why we work everyday to make EmBe a place of authentic care. We have two convenient locations and curriculum that engages and keeps kids active. Call us for a visit, we’d love to show you what we do.

Encouraging the proper head position is imperative during these first few developmental months. If a baby dealing with torticollis spends too much time lying on one side of his or her head, there is a tendency to develop a flatter spot. Developmental time and exercises are very important for these babies as well. Two common ones are tummy time and baby wearing. Baby wearing is a fantastic alternative to laying your baby in a Rock-n-Play during the day. It’s accommodating to the parent as well. With your hands free, you are

still able to get things done around the house or be out and about, without having to hold your baby in a perfectly straight position. Baby wearing also has so many positive benefits for your baby. They feel safe, get skin-to-skin bonding time, cry less and learn more. Even if your baby has some torticollis, you can position them in a way to stretch the tight side of their neck, thus correcting the head turn/tilt they have, just by wearing them. Tummy time is also great, but would be more beneficial after your baby has good neck control and has been adjusted by a chiropractor to assure proper alignment and less stress.

baby

‘Traumatic Birth Syndrome’ is a very common condition that occurs when babies need to be vacuumed, suctioned out or the doctor needed to use the forceps to get them out quickly. That quick movement results in subluxations of the spine. This usually occurs in the cervical spine, which can sometimes lead to torticollis. Torticollis is a condition where one of the muscles on the side of the neck gets strained and then spasms and becomes shorter. This leads to the neck and head being turned and leaning toward the side of the strained muscle. In these cases, is it very important not to have babies lay down for long periods on their back without support. A rolled up receiving blanket or small supportive neck pillow will work.

15

Lastly, getting your baby adjusted by a chiropractor regularly will really help to stretch those neck muscles out the correct way and encourage proper alignment and development. Rock-n-plays are not an issue for most babies. Those who do not show any signs of Traumatic Birth Syndrome or torticollis, or a tendency to turn their head one way most of the time, will be completely fine spending time laying flat in a rock-n-play. Make sure to incorporate tummy time and baby wearing at the appropriate times to aid in their development and learning. n

Sock Snowmen I’m not the only one that has a pile of socks that are missing their mates, right? Next time a sock goes mysteriously missing, hang on to the match to make some sock snowmen!

What You Need: 2 socks Rubber bands Buttons Crystals or beads Ribbon Rice Glue

Instructions: To assemble your snowman, fill a sock with rice. (Kids socks work perfect!) Tie off the top of the sock with a rubber band. Use another rubber band to divide the rice about a 1/4 of the way down to create a head and body. To make the hat, roll the top of the other sock several times and add to the head of your snowman. Using glue, add some details like eyes and buttons, and don’t forget to tie a ribbon around the rubber band to give the snowman a cute scarf! Tip: Add a few drops of essential oil scent of your choice to give your snowman a refreshing scent! n

Meet the Stenslands

In today’s world, parents are faced with the task of juggling work, family and home, and sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day to get it all done! According to a recent study by Ancestry. com, South Dakota has the highest percentage of working mothers in the United States. Nearly eight in 10 moms in the state are employed. But whether you’re working, or staying home to take care of your children, you know the effort that goes in to keeping your family going. From sports, to music and other extracurricular activities, keeping everyone organized is a full time job. Imagine having everyone in your family working for the same cause. This is the reality for the Stensand Family from Larchwood, Iowa. They are no strangers to striving for work-life balance. Their family farm was established in 1915 and they continue to work together as a family today.

Leah is in charge of retail operations at her family business. She also handles events and marketing. Her brothers Jason and Justin manage the farm and plant. Her other brother Kyle is involved in the farm, crop and plant operations. Doug (dad) manages the herd and herd health. Mona (mom) manages the kitchen and ice cream development. Mark (uncle) is the general manager for their retail locations. Paige (Jason’s wife) assists in both the marketing and plant operations. Chelsea (Justin’s wife) is in charge of coordinating tours. Add in more than 10 kids between this group and you’ll see that Stensland Family Farms is truly that: a full-time family operation and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We have our trials and tribulations, but we actually function together very well,” said Leah Moller. “We work as a team and each have our area of expertise, which makes it an easier process to work together.”

“We all know each other so well and are all working towards the same goal and focusing on the core business to support our entire family,” said Leah. “Being family, we’re also able to hold each other accountable and responsible for each other’s roles. Some might think that working with this many family members is tough (and it is some days), however, we truly do get along and work together fairly fluid.”

much as we can. Whether it’s for promoting, deliveries or assembly – guaranteed that one or more of our kids are involved in some way.”

“This is the hard part. Since we’re all working in one business, it’s hard to get everyone together sometimes,” said Leah. “Most of us have kids and families of our own and have to maintain a home life as well. One good thing is all of our kids are fairly close, since they get to see us all working together and are also present in various parts of the business. The biggest struggle for all of us is finding a balance.”

By involving everyone, when the days are busy and the juggling is tough, you can come together knowing you’re working toward the same goal. You can find a healthy lifestyle and the energy to keep up with that busy schedule.

It’s a similar struggle many of us face; finding that balance when life is busy.

1. Manage your technology. Don’t let it manage you.

“It’s both rewarding and SO much work,” said Leah. “However, with determination, hard work and dedication – it can be done!” For the Stensland’s, they say their trick is having open communication and working together by including everyone in the process. “Find a balance that works for your family,” said Leah. “We also include our family within the business as

Juggling Busy Schedules

Winter is a busy time of year for families. School is in full swing, evenings are packed with practices, activities, and homework, and holiday activities can quickly put you over the top. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and feel one step behind while trying to stay on top of it all. Fortunately, there are ways to slow down, stay organized, and enjoy the moment. Keep a calendar: Don’t try to remember practice schedules, due dates for homework and projects, or items to send to school. Write it down on a monthly or weekly family calendar and look at it every day. Plan ahead: Pack lunches and backpacks, pick out clothes, and find sports equipment for practice the night before. This will ease morning stress, save valuable time, and set a positive tone for the day.

Plan meals: Take time each weekend to plan meals and grocery shop for the week. Meal planning takes the rush and stress out of supper and minimizes the need for last minute trips to the store or drive through. Freezer meals are a huge time saver!

Enlist help: Have a list of age-appropriate daily chores for your children after school. When children contribute to the household, they feel a sense of belonging and begin to appreciate the value of a job well done. Chores could include completing homework, feeding a pet, or taking out the garbage.

Make it fun by turning the list into a sticker chart with a prize at the end of the week, such as dinner out to their favorite restaurant or family game night.

Schedule time together: Set aside time to spend together as a family with no distractions. Schedule it on your family calendar. Make it your time to slow down and connect with one another while engaging in an enjoyable activity. Declutter: Clean out closets and drawers. Do one room or even one drawer at a time to prevent it from feeling overwhelming. Donate unneeded items to local charities. Not only does this help children develop a generous heart, but it also declutters your home, making it easier to stay organized and find everything you need during the week. Simplify: Take an inventory of what you and your family value most in life. Eliminate obligations that do not line up with your values. Focus time and energy on those aspects that make life fulfilling and meaningful. n December/January 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

Know Where to Go When you are Sick or Injured

Whether you have the flu, a sore throat, a broken bone or bad sprain, you want the best care for your needs. It can be hard to know where to go for certain injuries and illnesses. The primary care clinic, acute care clinic and the emergency department are all designed to care for specific medical needs. Go to your primary care clinic

Virtual Care - Care that’s convenient

The vast majority of your health care needs can be provided at a primary care clinic. Make an appointment here for ongoing care as well as new, non-emergency needs like fevers, flus, cuts and minor injuries.

Life can get busy, so receiving expert care that easily fits into your daily routine is important. Video and e-visits can be used for many of the same issues you might be seen at acute care for, but without ever having to leave your home.

Go to acute care Illness and injury can happen at any time. So when those minor coughs, colds, strains and sprains occur, your primary care or acute care clinic is the best place for you to go.

Go to the emergency department The emergency department is staffed to provide 24/7 care for potentially life-threatening issues. Go here if you are experiencing:* • • • • •

Chest pain • Numbness in arm, face or leg Fever above 104° • Head injury Throwing up blood • Overdose Allergic reaction • Seizure Difficulty speaking • Shortness of breath

*This list is a sample of issues and not comprehensive.

With a video visit, you can speak directly with a health care professional through your laptop or smartphone and an Internet connection. An e-visit lets you submit a health questionnaire, which will be reviewed by a health care professional. Within four hours, you will have a response detailing a treatment plan, prescription or a request to see you in person. Virtual care is appropriate for a number of issues including:* • • • • • •

Acne Athlete’s foot Cough Diarrhea Head lice Heartburn

• • • • •

Influenza Insect bites Pink eye Sinus problems Urinary symptoms

*This list is a sample of issues and not comprehensive. n

Finding Balance in Life

If you’re like me, you’re forever looking for that healthy balance between work and family. In addition to holding down a demanding job, you are the primary caregiver to children and possibly aging parents. You are the household organizer and cleaner. You are the family chauffeur. You are the food shopper, the menu planner and the cook. You tidy up the kitchen, feed the pets and answer the call, “Mom, where’s my favorite pair of jeans?” The juggling act that so many of us confront each day – too many tasks and too little time – has brought about the need for a career that offers flexibility without sacrificing social impact, relationships and opportunities for personal development.

32 |

December/January 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

So how do you find that perfect career? Here are a few things to consider: According to Ron Willingham, founder/CEO of Integrity Systems, Inc. in his book, “When Good isn’t Good Enough,” the energy to achieve is released when you have clear goals that are congruent with your beliefs and values. What do you believe in so strongly that you’re willing to overcome any obstacle and challenge your own limited view of what’s possible?

•K now thyself. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Do you prefer a structured environment or the freedom to prioritize your own schedule? Which, by the way, can be a blessing or a nightmare if you haven’t learned how to say NO and NEXT – trust me! Do you need social interaction? How much? Knowing these key attributes about yourself can lead to finding the best match for your work-style.

•B e intentional regarding your support system. I believe we all understand the value of surrounding ourselves with positive people who encourage, support and accept us unconditionally. If we’re lucky, we can count on these people to tell us the truth with a dose of grace, as needed. How many times do we need to be reminded to take care of ourselves first, in order to be well enough

• What kind of flexibility are you after? Allison O’Kelly, founder/CEO of Mom Corps defines flexibility in 3 ways: time (modified hours or work week), place (partial telecommuting, short commute or no required travel), and duration (ongoing employee, contract or seasonal work). If you’re asking an employer for flexibility, O’Kelly recommends waiting until after you’ve proven yourself reliable. You will be in a much better negotiating position.

family

• What are you passionate about?

to care for others? My advice: Develop good relationships with your neighbors and don’t be afraid to ask for help – what comes around, goes around.

33

•W hat about personal development opportunities? Whether you work for yourself or someone else, I believe it’s important to continue developing new skills and expanding your sense of what’s possible. That means setting periodic goals that both challenge and inspire you to learn something new. Look for ways to coach, mentor and provide leadership to others, and you’ll be richly rewarded for your efforts. What you may find is that teacher gains as much or more than the student! Finding balance in our daily lives is essential to our longevity and overall wellbeing. Be intentional about how you spend your time because no matter how hard we try, we cannot manufacture more of it. We’ll simply have to maximize the 24/7 each of us has been given. n

It’s Time for Report Cards –

Is Your Child Achieving to Their Potential? The first report card of the new school year doesn’t always give you an accurate assessment of how your child is doing. However, there are definite signs parents need to watch for that are early indicators that action is required. The signs and symptoms that a vision problem is blocking learning are easy to see, when you know what to look for. Does your child avoid reading or homework? Does your child understand the materials when you read them to her, but not when she reads for herself? Does your son turn his head at an angle when he is reading? Does comprehension get worse the longer he or she reads? Is your child bright but not achieving to her potential?

40 |

December/January 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

There can be a variety of reasons why a child will avoid reading or homework. The first reason that often comes to mind is the child isn’t motivated or just isn’t trying hard enough. While this may be the case for some children, research has shown that over 60% of children who struggle with reading and learning have undiagnosed vision problems that are not detected by most vision screenings. Often when a child has difficulty seeing the words on the page, they will avoid reading. Sometimes the words may look double or blurry. Children will often share with me that the words look like they are moving on the page. Parents are often shocked when they hear that. Why didn’t their child say something sooner? Children have no idea how they are supposed to see, so they rarely complain. One of the first signs of a vision problem that interfers with learning is when the child has difficulty comprehending what they read, yet understands the same text when someone else reads it to them. Unfortunately, what can confuse parents and educators is the fact the child may be able to read out loud just fine, so everyone assumes because the child can say the words, that comprehension must be possible. When someone has a vision problem that makes reading difficult they have to concentrate very hard to be able to see the words, and unfortunately, they are unable to remember what they read. There are 17 visual skills that are required for reading and academic success, and being able to see the letters on the eye chart (20/20) is just one of those visual skills. When a child is missing one or more of these visual skills academic performance can suffer. Most routine eye exams are not designed to test all these visual skills, so it is important to schedule a developmental vision evaluation in order to determine if a vision problem is interfering with learning.

Relationships and Finances

It is no secret that couples fight about money. As different events come up in the year - birthdays, vacations and Christmas - finances can take a hit. This can lead to some stressful times for couples if there isn’t a clear path of communication and understanding about money and how it’s spent. According to Marina Pearson, who authors a blog covering topics of interest to couples, fights about money have three underlying issues: • Financial security • Poor communication • N egative thought patterns, or what she calls the “hidden hamster wheel”

Financial Security – When we get upset with how a partner has spent some of the money we have, it isn’t usually about the actual purchase, it’s

44 |

December/January 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

about how much money is left AFTER the purchase. We are really worried about how we will manage from this point forward without the money they spent. Security comes from a feeling of protection from bad things. We are often under the illusion that if we have enough money, nothing bad will happen. Rethink your idea of what security is and what financial security is made of. And – this next part is important – have a conversation with your partner about these beliefs. For your partner to respect your ideas about financial security, they have to know what they are.

“Some people think that deceiving their mate over spending or financial decisions is nothing more than a harmless secret, an innocent white lie, but it is deadly to the relationship,” says Howard Dayton of FamilyLife.com. Sit down with your spouse and agree on an amount that can be spent without consulting the other. Anything above that amount should be discussed as a purchase that you both get a say about.

Negative Thought Patterns – I always tell couples that I counsel, “If you look for the negative in your partner, you will find the negative. If you look for the positive, you will find the positive.”

The same holds true for your beliefs about how your partner handles money. If you feel that they are frivolous, you may begin to view all of their purchases as frivolous or even selfish. Take that a step further and consider that we begin believing that our frustration, anger or happiness is a direct result of our partner’s actions, not of our own negative/positive thoughts about their actions.

parent

Poor Communication – Poor communication in a relationship is more than just not listening or learning to share your feelings. It’s also being honest about money and how you are spending it. Communicating about making purchases is important – before you swipe your card!

Marina Pearson calls this the “hidden hamster wheel” because once you begin this cycle, you can tread the same ground over and over and never get any closer to solving the real issue.

45

As Christmas gets closer, make time to sit down with your partner and have the “money talk.” Decide how much money you are going to spend and how it will be divided – and stick to it! Be open and transparent about purchases and listen to one another. It really can make a difference! n

60% of children who struggle with reading and learning have undiagnosed vision problems that are not detected by most vision screenings

Does your child:

Struggle to get homework done? Fatigue when reading? Prefer to be read to, but hates to read? Have poor comprehension? Lose his/her place when reading? Get distracted easily?

Whether you’re a stayat-home or working mom, these outfits go nicely with many different colors that you are sure to find right at home in your closets. Happy Holidays!

1. Make Accessories the Focus: This is a patterned long-sleeve, that brings out a handful of colors you can pair your family photo with. Pull out the denim blue, navy, white, tan, and beige colors from the shirt to match up your whole family with this top. These brown boots are the ultimate in fall and winter footwear. The fold over shaft features a row of chic covered buttons, adding vintage-inspired flair to a basic round toe and slight heel. Save Money by Planning Meals Ahead Planning your meals ahead of time is one of the biggest ways to save on your meal budget each month. Planning ahead isn’t always easy, especially if cooking meals is not something you love to do. Meal planning is something that needs to become a habit in order to really work. By setting aside one hour per week to do your meal planning, you will start to see an enormous change in not only the amount you are spending, but in the quality of food your family is eating!

• I t’s good to begin with a visual of the amount you are currently spending on food. Get out a pen and paper and take a look at your bank statements. Add up all the money you spent on any kind of fast food or sit down restaurant in the last month. Combine that amount with what you have spent on groceries. That number will help you decide what your realistic budget for food should look like. • F irst, choose a day convenient for you to be your weekly shopping day. • D ecide on a budget. Divide it up between which stores you plan to shop at. • S tart your meal plan by checking out all of the grocery sale flyers. What is on sale? What is in season right now? • S earch for recipes online that include as many of the sale ingredients as possible. • D o a quick search online for printable coupons. Only search coupons for items that are on your grocery list!

48 |

December/January 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com

Now Enrolling!

• Do an additional quick search for store coupons. • M ost people will do a weekly meal plan, but if you’re a big planner, by all means go ahead and make a monthly plan, or even a 6 to 8 week plan! The more meals you have planned ahead, the better chance you’ll have at creating and maintaining a new meal planning habit for your family. • F or those 4+ week meal plans, decide ahead of time how often you want to shop. I will usually do one short weekly trip for fresh ingredients, then one big trip once a month, usually planned for the day after payday.

Extra Tip! Once a month, if you are able to set aside a couple of hours just for cooking, take that time to cook multiple meals ahead of time that you can freeze for later. This way, even on those busy nights, you’ll be able to quickly heat up a homecooked meal! n

Growing More Than Crops on Our Family Farms

51

by CommonGround The tradition of the family farm is alive and well in the United States and South Dakota. In fact, many may not realize that 97 percent of farms in this country are family owned and operated, a statistic very few other industries can tout. Although the “American Gothic” picture of the family farm is no longer accurate, many are thriving. Today, more and more young people seek education and careers outside the farm and join their parents later in life, which means a wide breadth of knowledge and experience when multiple generations come back to farm together. For Morgan Kontz, a farmer from Colman, being part of a family farm is more than just a job; it’s a way of life.

“My favorite part of being a mom is watching my children grow and seeing the world through their eyes,” said Morgan. “They truly are so innocent and sweet. The things we often forget to stop for are the things they pay attention to, like looking at a pretty flower or watching a plane fly across the sky, or just simply enjoying a beautiful day running around the yard. Life is amazingly beautiful to a child and that is heartwarming to watch.” When it comes to being a farm mom, Morgan enjoys being able to watch her kids learn, just as their dad did when he was their age. “At 4 years old, my daughter knows the names of equipment and crops in a field,” said Morgan. “She knows when it’s important to stand still and wait for a tractor to finish backing up. She gets the chance to come to the farm and help do small chores. She gets to experience

planting a seed and watching it grow. She gets to see life being born, cared for and nurtured by a new mother every time we have a calf. Most importantly, she gets to experience firsthand what it means to have a passion that can last a lifetime. She gets to see passion in our eyes when we work at something we love.”

Morgan Kontz is a wife, mother, farmer, blogger and South Dakota CommonGround volunteer. To read more about her life on the farm, visit her at Stories Of A First Generation Farm Wife (sdfarmwife.com). To learn more about CommonGround, visit findourcommonground.com.

Prosciutto

CHEESE BITES Ingredients

eats

• 1/2 cup low-fat ricotta cheese • 1/4 cup mozzarella, finely shredded • 1 large egg • 2 tablespoons crushed pineapple, drained • 1 tablespoon Parmesan, shredded • 1 tablespoon green onion, finely chopped (greens only) • 1/4 teaspoon dried mustard • 3 ounces prosciutto • One 1.90 ounce package mini fillo shells

53

Directions

Slice prosciutto in half and line mini fillo shells. Fill each shell with about 1 tablespoon cheese mixture and bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until tops are golden.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine ricotta, mozzarella, egg, pineapple, Parmesan, green onion and dried mustard in a medium bowl.

APPLE AND WHITE CHEDDAR Turnovers Ingredients

• 2 medium golden delicious apples, peeled, halved, cored, cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 1 1/2 cup loosely packed, coarsely grated white cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup • 1/4 cup English walnut pieces • 1/4 cup dried cranberries • Pinch of salt

• One 17.3 oz. package frozen puff pastry (two sheets), thawed • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water to blend, for glaze

as template, cut out four rounds from pastry. Transfer pastry rounds to one baking sheet, spaced apart. Repeat with second pastry sheet, placing rounds on second baking sheet.

Directions

Spoon about 1/2 cup of filling into half of each pastry round, dividing all of filling among rounds. Brush edges of pastry lightly with some of egg glaze. Fold the plain pastry half over filling; press on edges to seal and enclose filling completely, then press tines of fork along pastry edge to create tight seal. Using tip of small sharp knife, cut two 1/2-inch long slits in top of crust on each turnover. Brush tops with egg glaze, then sprinkle with sugar.

Toss apples, cheese, syrup, walnuts, cranberries and salt in medium bowl to blend. Cover and chill, up to 2 hours. Position one rack in the top third and one rack in the bottom third of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees F. Line two large rimmed baking sheets with parchment; set aside. Roll out one puff pastry sheet on lightly floured surface to 11-inches square. Using a 5- to 5-1/2inch plate or bowl

Bake turnovers until crusts are puffed and golden, and juices are bubbling through slits in crusts, about 15 to 18 minutes. Carefully run metal spatula under turnovers to loosen and transfer to racks to cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Ways to Make Your Bathroom feel Bigger You may have limited space in your bathroom, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it appear more spacious. We have tips to trick the eyes and make your bathroom feel a little bigger and even more inviting. 1. Brighten up the room:

2. Add smart storage options:

Light paint colors can make a world of difference in small spaces. Trulia consulted the expertise of several interior designers and found that many emphasized using light-colored, low-contrast trim and accent paint colors to avoid jarring transitions, which can make corners obvious.

Excess clutter has the tendency to make a space look cramped. Thankfully, there are many storage options for bathrooms, from large to compact. Depending on your storage needs, consider a new vanity, above-sink medicine cabinet, or an over-the-toilet storage shelf or cabinet. When choosing a vanity, you’ll have to be conscious of the floor space and objects surrounding the sink in the bathroom. Be sure to measure the distance between objects and leave room for cleaning before making your final decision.

Sunlight and man-made light from your bathroom light bar, wall sconces, or ceiling lamp also have the ability to brighten up a room, making it appear larger. If you don’t get a lot of natural light, be sure to use light-colored paint, light-colored decorations, and bright lighting and bulbs (like LED bulbs) to make up for it.

in the wall. If you decide to use an open shelf, store items such as towels that can still look neat in the space. If you need to store many odds-and-ends, use decorative storage bins.

3. Frameless shower door: When working with limited space, frameless glass shower doors have the ability to extend the depth of your bathroom. If your shower takes up one-third of your bathroom, and you use a shower curtain or nontransparent door, it will significantly decrease your visual space. Before you choose to install a frameless glass shower door, first decide if your shower is something you want to show off or something you want to hide.

4. Create more floor space: Leaving your floor clear of clutter and chunky objects can make it seem bigger by extending the perceived depth. In small bathrooms, pedestal sinks and simple wall-mounted sinks can give you that much-needed room surrounding the sink area and floor space. If you go this route, ensure your storage needs are still being met. If you only have a little more room to work with, but still want your bathroom to appear spacious, try a wall-mounted vanity or a vanity with legs. Both options will give you additional room for storage and leave your floor more exposed. n

Home Décor Tips Decorating your home is a great way to showcase your interests, hobbies and perhaps even your mood. Be sure to utilize a wide range of art and photographs including family portraits, snapshots, kids’ artwork, family heirlooms and vintage photos.

Wondering about the best place to hang your wall décor? Think outside the box! If there’s wall space, utilize it. Entryways are great, so visitors can see your family and artwork the minute they walk into your house. Staircase walls are especially fun to decorate. If you are displaying one piece of wall art, or a small grouping, it is best to hang them at eye level. Try not to hang them more than six inches away from the top of your couch if hanging in your living room. It’s best to use wall anchors if you’re not able to nail into studs for hanging heavier photos. Be unique! Try hanging several smaller photos arranged in a grid. Lay them out on the floor first to help you find the perfect arrangement. You can also try cutting out sizes of frames from newspaper or craft paper.

Instead of hanging photos, try propping photos up against the wall, on shelves or rest them on easels displayed on end tables. Rather than using framed prints, you could use wire and clips to display photos, allowing you to switch them out frequently. This works great for displaying kids’ artwork. Get creative! If you’re going for a whole wall display, mix it up with different sizes and color frames or add modern initials or mirrors. Do you like a more eclectic or formal style? Mixing things up to make a statement piece may be more your style. Or if you prefer a more formal, uniform style, you can keep all the frames the same thickness, color and style. Whatever your style, displaying your art and portraits in your home can say a lot about you! n

Have you noticed you feel stressed or cranky when you don’t get enough sleep? That’s because sleep allows our brain and bodies to repair itself and grow. Without enough sleep, we have a more difficult time concentrating and an easier time feeling stressed out. Our children experience this same phenomenon and it can impact their ability to perform at school. More and more research supports that sleep can have a direct impact on our brain’s ability to recall information. The amount and quality of sleep we receive can impact memory and learning. Are you aware of how many hours your child should be getting? Here are the recommendations according to The Better Sleep Council:

Infants: 16 hours Preschoolers: 10-12 hours Age six and older: 9-10 hours If you’re having a hard time getting your little one to sleep, evaluate their sleeping environment. For quality sleep, consider the following when revising (or developing) your child’s sleep schedule:

An early bedtime that allows for them to get enough hours of sleep. If they tell you they’re not tired, don’t let them stay up. Once they become “overtired” their quality of sleep will suffer.

to fall asleep. It will be much harder to get them to bed if they have an inconsistent sleeping schedule.

A break period from electronics, food and sugary sweets at least an hour before bed. Bright screens and sugar give children boosts of energy making it much harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep.

A nighttime routine that’s conducive to sleep, such as taking a bath, brushing teeth, quiet time, a bedtime story from you or reading a book themselves. Use traditional books over electronics.

A supportive mattress big enough for their body to move around in as they grow. A “big kid” bed may be necessary if they are still in a toddler bed. Children need supportive beds just as adults do. Creating a restful environment consistently is key to great sleep for our children, so they can be refreshed and ready to learn each day. n

Adding a Pet to your Family: Things to Consider

These days we are busier than ever with soccer practice for Billy, piano recital for Suzy and school homework that apparently doesn’t end until after your favorite late night host signs off for the night. Who has time for a pet? What may seem like a chore, or more items on your plate, caring for a pet can not only be a rewarding family experience, it can also be very doable even for the busiest of families. Deciding as a family which pet best suits your family’s lifestyle needs to be first. If we were to poll any number of kids, puppies arguably would be first in line. Having a crate or a kennel for your puppy when no one is home will help with potty training and create a safe place for them to be when you are away. Who doesn’t love puppy kisses when they come home? Puppies can be a great way to get the family out for a walk together as well, letting the puppy get some exercise with parents and kids too! Kittens, though lovingly aloof, can be a great pet for the busy family. Don’t be fooled by the old tales that kittens

don’t require a lot of time or family involvement. Those cats want to have your interaction and affection too - just ask your curtains or the back of your couch. Perhaps, your family needs a smaller pet for apartment living such as a hamster, guinea pig, or rabbit. These smaller pets can be wonderful additions to your family. Enjoying the cuddling of a rabbit or the purring and pop-corning of a guinea pig can be a family’s delight. Regardless of your family’s dynamics and extracurricular activities, a family pet can provide years of love, enjoyment, exercise and just plain fun! n
