Binge Watching Season
welcome
Here at ‘Hood we know it is so important for you to take care of yourself. Our panel of moms wanted to create our first New Year, New You issue. As you start to look at 2020, what are you going to do to take better care of yourself and your family? We talked with local gyms to give you a jump start! We let you know what their location has to offer and how a local mom has been impacted by the gym. The best part is it comes with a checklist of things each gym offers! As you work on the New You for you and your family, there is more than just working out. We have articles to help you improve your mental fitness, as well as, articles to get your home ready for the winter months! If you are looking for mom tips, you won’t want to miss our tips this month! If you haven’t started your holiday shopping yet, don’t worry we have our local gift guide directory
up on our website! It will make your holiday shopping a breeze. Make sure to check out our Facebook page for our 25 Days of Giving too! I had so much fun during our photoshoot talking about what the boys are looking forward to in 2020. Thanks to Julie Prairie Photography and the boys for helping us out with this issue. Of course my little helpers Jaxson and Khloe had a blast picking out props and helping at the photoshoot. Holiday Season means it’s time for Santa sightings and lots of holiday events…did you know there are so many events for the Holiday season in our area? Make sure to check out the ones we have listed in print, but for a list to keep you busy every weekend in December, check out thehoodmagazine.com. Make sure to search Holiday in the Calendar section to help find them faster.

Thrive After Birth Wellness tips from a postpartum doula
8|
December/January 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com
baby Door Hanger - Putting a task list of sorts on the door for your guests to see upon entering would let them know what simple tasks they can complete for you while visiting. Team Leader - Having a pre-planned team of friends and family who rally around you post birth can be an integral part to a healthy postpartum recovery! Think of someone to “rally the troops”, keep things organized, and constantly flowing. The leader will be the main point of contact going forward, the gatekeeper if you will. They can help you manage who visits, how often, for how long, and what tasks they can complete for your family! Nutrition - When nursing, be sure you’re taking in more calories. Your body also needs protein, carbohydrates, and fats for energy. Meal plan and prepare freezer meals in advance, if possible. Meal trains are also invaluable; make a plan and share it with a few friends and family. Joint pain - Relaxin loosens the ligaments to help your body accommodate the excess weight of
carrying a baby (or babies) and helps prepare the body for the birth. It can take some time for the ligaments to return to their original positions and while this ligament realignment is taking place you may experience soreness and pain. What helps? Taking warm showers or baths, postpartum massage, limiting lifting and strenuous activity, and getting plenty of rest can help you to heal. When will my body/life get back to normal? You may hear “6 weeks”, “after the 4th trimester”, “9 months”, or “never”. Some are able to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight within a few months, others find themselves back at that weight but find that their clothes don’t fit the same. Be patient with these changes! The changes a baby brings may cause some to experience an identity crisis, just remember: You are now a parent in addition to the person you already are--Parenthood is an expansion of who you are, not a loss of who you were! This is a new normal! You are doing great. l

• Children do not have the manual dexterity to
independently brush well until they are able to tie their shoes on their own, so help your child thoroughly brush until around age six at least. They can “take a turn” brushing with a parent to make sure all the teeth get brushed well every time.
• To help make the enamel stronger and more
resistant to cavities, use a fluoride toothpaste daily. Your child’s dentist can explain the appropriate amount to use and age to start.

Hearing that you have cancer is not a diagnosis that anyone ever expects in their life, especially a child that hasn’t yet hit double digits. After months of tests and unknown diagnosis results, the Hauert family received the news that their young daughter, Ady, had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The following years consisted of chemotherapy and doctor appointments that molded Ady into the person that has made her someone we want to tell you more about as our Inspiring Teen this month! Ady has learned so much about the damaging Ady Hauert is a 7th grader at Harrisburg South effects that the treatments for children with cancer Middle School. teen by Julie Prairie
Planning for your Teen’s
Winter Driving Car trouble on a sunny summer day isn’t a picnic but add in our bitter cold temps and blowing snow and you have a potential recipe for a disaster. At 14, my triplet teens have witnessed their share of white knuckle driving as passengers in our vehicles but haven’t gotten behind the wheel to experience winter driving for themselves. And I’m not in a hurry to hand over the keys. Difficult driving conditions have made for some great discussions in our home and during our drives. I’m starting to realize that in the next few years my ‘captive audience’ will not have my daily influence and I’m hoping some of the lessons I share with them will be remembered during challenging situations. We’ve had several discussions about what to do and what not to do in dangerous winter weather. Here are some of the suggestions and advice we’ve discussed. Keep a winter travel kit in your car. You should have the following items in your car kit: granola bars, water, first aid kit, a folding shovel, a blanket, windshield scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, road flares, tool kit and extra clothing. Drive slowly. Don’t follow too closely. Don’t make sudden moves. Stay in control. Watch for black ice. It forms quickly and often on bridges because they don’t have ground underneath them they freeze more quickly. You may not see it before you find yourself driving on it. If you do find yourself sliding on ice take your foot off the gas and don’t turn or swerve. If you need to use your brake do it gently. Stay on the main roads. This is not a time for shortcuts. Main roads are plowed more quickly and frequently than side roads. You can easily get stuck even in neighborhoods in town. Experience matters. It’s okay to leave the driving to someone more experienced. If you feel uncomfortable let your parents drive you or take the bus. It’s okay if it’s not ‘cool’. Safety is more important. Stay home! Enjoy some hot chocolate, break out the movies, turn on the fireplace and stay in your pjs. If you don’t need to go anywhere, don’t go! Enjoy your time at home and make some memories together. Eventually the summer sunshine will return. l

Ben & Sarah Krush More about Ben & Sarah: We are a family of 5 and enjoy staying active throughout all months of the year here in SD. GreatLIFE Woodlake has been a true blessing to us in the busy season of life with small children. Not only is this location (and all satellite locations) always available to sneak a workout in, we go bowling, swimming, and utilize the discounts associated with our membership. What is your favorite thing about being a member of GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness Club? The childcare is amazing, all of our kids
ask to go to the gym to see their favorite ladies that work there. We have been using the childcare for 6 years and have always felt so comfortable leaving our kids there while we enjoy a workout alone and maybe even sneak in an uninterrupted shower, all mothers know what I mean! Also the variety of classes, equipment and weights is great to be able to do any kind of work out at the gym.
Why is this important to you? We want to be healthy to show our children the importance of wellness and making time for self-care in all seasons of life. We also enjoy doing activities as a family like swimming and bowling! In the winter months, it is a great outlet to be able to do these activities inside.
FACILITY CHECKLIST:
Advice for other parents:
A membership at GreatLIFE is so affordable. Going to the gym as a family is part of our daily routine and our children enjoy it as much as we do. Since we participate in swimming and bowling activities as part of our membership, the children enjoy the benefits as well.

More about Kay: I am married to my hus-

What is your favorite thing about being a member of Barre3? Everything!
Initially, I came to Barre3 for the high intensity, low impact workout. I keep coming back for so many reasons. The classes are always different, allowing my body and mind to be challenged at every class. Barre3 offers a play lounge for my children so there is no need to worry about finding daycare so I can spend some time on me! But most importantly, Barre3 is so much more than a fitness studio; it’s a community of positivity and encouragement.
Why is this important to you? Let’s
be honest: fitness studios can be intimidating. Barre3 is not; the environment is so empowering. Clients are greeted with smiles and joy the moment you walk through the doors. During classes, you are challenged; you are encouraged. And you finish with a sense of accomplishment, of pride, to take on whatever life may throw your way.
Advice for other parents:
I think the best thing we can do as parents is to take care of ourselves. We spend so much time and energy taking care of others that we often neglect our own health, both emotional and physical. Giving ourselves the love and care we need allows us to be the best parents/spouses/colleagues we can be. We are worth it!

Sarah Tschetter More about Sarah: Sarah is a stay-at-home mom of 3 (Carson-14, Owen-12 , Quinn-8). Sarah & her husband, Matt, are also hosts to 2 hockey players for Sioux Falls Power this season. What is your favorite thing about the 3 Degrees? 3 Degrees is Sarah’s quiet time
and her time to be alone. After weekends of staying in hotels and eating out, 3 Degrees is her way to relax and detox from eating on the go and melt away the stress headaches that she suffers from. Sarah says, “I love the knowledgeable staff, they’re all welcoming and pamper me. Their studio is always clean and the most relaxing atmosphere. I also love the whole body vibration machines that are included. It’s like a condensed barre class and feels like I worked out for a long time.”
Why is this important to you? It makes
me a better mom and I have more patience. I am doing something for myself, which prepares me for the evenings of running the kids around and making sure they are where they need to be. I feel less stressed when I go to 3 Degrees. I can do what I want in that time. I can be on my phone, make a list of my daily stuff, watch tv, read a book and not be interrupted by the kids needing something. It also helps with SAD disorder (Seasonal Sadness Disorder) and insomnia.
FACILITY CHECKLIST:
Advice for other parents: Even though it is hard to take time for yourself, it is important that you do it. I know I am a better mom when I do. When your kids see you taking time for yourself, the kids learn it is ok to do something for themselves too. It is being a good role model to teach them to take care of yourself.

What is your favorite thing about being a member of The Sanford Wellness Center? I love how the staff knows you by
name. For such a popular club, you would think that you would get lost in all of the members, but you don’t. You feel like you are part of a healthy family! I also love having a personal trainer.
Why is this important to you? I don’t always want to work out but knowing that I will see some friendly faces definitely helps. Having a personal trainer helps me stay accountable and getting results faster is always a good thing. Advice for other parents: Staying healthy by working out and eating right, is a necessary part of being a good parent and a good employee. Make this one of your priorities. Go with a friend, join classes or hire a personal trainer. If you fall off the wagon, don’t guilt yourself. Just set a date to go back and make it happen.

Paula Pardy More about Paula: Wife, mom of four great kids. I previously worked as an OB/Gyn and now a stay-at-home mom. We have a family annual pass to Midco® Aquatic Center. I love to get up early and swim four days a week, with Coach Megan and the Sioux Falls Prairie Masters Swim Team. What is your favorite thing about the Midco® Aquatic Center? I love to swim
with my Masters group. It’s a great group of adults including beginners and expert swimmers who compete on a national level. It also inspires me to see community members of all ages at the pool exercising in so many ways. The Midco® Aquatic Center is truly a place for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy exercise year-round.
Why is this important to you? I deeply appreciate that everyone in our community is able to use a public pool for exercise. Passes, swimming lessons and water fitness classes are affordable and there is something for everyone to do. Young and old can enjoy the warm water pool or current channel. Competitive swimmers have an amazing 50 meter pool to train and race in. The shallow recreation pool can accommodate non-swimmers, too. It is a bright, cheerful, friendly place in all seasons. Advice for other parents: Everyone should come and try it out! Swimming is a great lifetime (and lifesaving) skill to have and the younger your kids experience it, the better. They can splash in shallow water as infants, take swimming lessons, and maybe they will want to join a swim team. Adults and extended family will find it enjoyable, too. Swimming at Midco® Aquatic Center is something everyone can enjoy!

Lanpher Chiropractic Lanpher Chiropractic has been in business in Sioux Falls for many years and was founded by Dr. Rob Lanpher. Dr. Lanpher went to USF and then completed his chiropractic degree at Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, IA. His daughter, Dr. Christine Duncan, has now joined the clinic as a chiropractor and acupuncturist. She also went to USF, and then completed her chiropractic degree at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minneapolis, MN, where she also completed her Acupuncture Certification. Children are a big part of the patient base at Lanpher Chiropractic. Dr. Lanpher and Dr. Duncan treat babies as early as one week old and have amazing success with many different issues such as: colic, spitting up, gas, poor digestion, sleeplessness and torticollis (inability of baby to turn their head both directions), just to name a few. As childhood allergies are getting more and more prevalent, the need for accurate and non-invasive testing measures is becoming more necessary. Dr. Lanpher and Dr. Duncan both offer Applied Kinesiology Non-Invasive Allergy Testing. This can be used to determine what foods, chemicals and elemental items you or your child could have a sensitivity to. After these items are assessed, the doctors can then recommend natural supplements to support, heal and restore your body. Nutritional counseling is a specialty that Dr. Lanpher and Dr. Duncan both use to serve their patients. They are highly trained and knowledgeable about which vitamins, minerals and herbs help with certain conditions. Their unique approach of using Applied Kinesiology to evaluate your needs really sets them apart! Dr. Duncan is also very passionate about her acupuncture practice. It is an ancient technique
where hair-thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body to help prevent and treat illness. It is very complementary to chiropractic care and also provides a lot of emotional and physical relief. Many patients that have dealt with anxiety issues and depression gain monumental relief through acupuncture. Some other conditions that Dr. Duncan has had great results with are seasonal allergies, headaches/migraines, addiction therapy, smoking cessation and digestive disorders. The number one question she gets asked is to clarify whether acupuncture hurts…and the answer is: not often! The most common comment she receives from her patients is, “I would have never thought getting so many needles put in me would be so relaxing!” Dr. Lanpher and Dr. Duncan are always happy to take consultations over the phone and answer any questions you may have about their techniques and how they could benefit you. They are a friendly, family-run clinic with a passion for healing.

Always on Call Experiencing a virtual medical exam
Shortly after putting her toddler to bed, Colette Manning’s son was awake – fussing, tugging on his ear. The mother of three knew it was likely an ear infection. But by the time she would have her son in the car and ready to go, the acute care clinic would be closing. “As I was trying to figure out what to do, I remembered I had recently gotten this device that allowed me to do a medical visit online,” she says. Instead of making a mad dash across town, she decided to give it a try. On-demand medical care With TytoCare + Sanford Health, patients can do a medical exam for minor illnesses at any place or time. The kit includes a: •H and-held device with exam camera and thermometer • Otoscope adaptor for ears • Stethoscope adapter for heart and lungs • Tongue depressor adaptor for throat The kit is used with the Sanford Health or Tyto apps for guided exams on a mobile device or phone. This meant Colette could have her son seen by a Sanford Health provider without leaving home.
She turned on the device, opened the app and requested a visit. In a few minutes, Colette was connected with a provider. Once they discussed his symptoms and went over his health history, Colette’s provider walked her through using the device to get readings of her son’s heart rate, temperature, lungs and abdomen. She also took pictures of his throat and ears. “My provider was so patient and helpful,” she says. “When I was trying to get an ear reading, my son was really fighting me. After I tried a couple times, she asked if anyone else was at home who might assist me. And I thought, ‘Of course!’ You can’t think clearly when you have a kid shifting all over the place in your arms!” Colette’s husband then held her son while she positioned the device at the right angle to see inside his ear. Immediately, the provider knew he had an ear infection and sent a prescription to Colette’s pharmacy to pick up in the morning. “If I had to wait to go in, I would have had to bring my other kids along too,” says Colette. “This was such a great option for me as a parent. When it’s late or when leaving home is difficult, this is a great solution.” l

Swim Smiles Why Swimming is a Gift that Keeps on Giving
Water covers over 70% of the world’s surface. It both sustains life and nourishes our soul as a source of relaxation. Yet, for many, it is also a source of fear. Whether it’s a relaxing dip in the pool with friends, a trip to the lake with family, or going on a cruise, the difference between feeling joy or fear of water often boils down to one crucial factor – knowing how to swim. Yet swim programs are not mandatory. Baseball, dance, gymnastics, karate, softball and soccer are all great activities! However, these activities cannot save a life like learning to swim can. If your child falls in a lake or pool, a perfect ballet posture or pitching arm will not help him or her to safety.
Swimming is a life skill that builds confidence. Every child is different. Some are fearless.
Giving the gift of learning how to swim is a gift that keeps on giving. So, what exactly does that mean?
Knowing how to swim is a critical component of water safety. Drowning is the number one cause of injury related death among children 1 to 4 years of age. It is the second leading cause of injury related death among children 5 to 14 years of age. We put our kids in school for more than a decade to gain the skills for a happy, successful life. Much of that time is mandatory.
Others are fearful. As a result, learners progress at different rates. Because it is so personal, skill building is heavily dependent on instructor attention and individual effort. Often, a smaller class size allows for greater progress due to the individualized attention. With progress comes the satisfaction of personal accomplishment. And, as fears subside, confidence builds. It’s not unusual to hear instructors state, “the small class size makes sure that my student is getting enough attention in class, and the confidence I’ve seen in them in the water has grown by leaps and bounds.” Young children are like sponges, absorbing knowledge and developing their fine motor skills every day. After effort and practice, muscle memory comes in to play and children will automatically respond to swimming queues from instructors. The instant ability and skill to respond through muscle memory is another confidence builder.

Swimming is an adventure! Learning to swim opens the door to so many adventures throughout one’s lifetime. The list is virtually endless – comfortably visiting friends with a pool, enjoying fun at a water park, walking on an ocean beach and wading in water, boating, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, surfing, water skiing… and on and on! Swimming is truly a gateway to life adventures. As children grow and become teens and adults, water-based opportunities expand. Knowing how to swim, and being confident in and around water, means your child can partake in these opportunities instead of avoiding them throughout his or her life.
Adventures together in body, mind, and soul can bring real joy. It comes in many forms. It’s an autistic kid who once wouldn’t go near water but will now have fun in the pool with his siblings. It’s a family able to create lifetime memories on a water-related vacation. It’s a mom with an inner smile as she sees her kids trot off to their next water adventure. It’s a grandmother with an outer smile who, after learning to swim, is entering the water to enjoy activities with her grandchildren. This is the ultimate payoff from learning to swim.
Swimming is also a one-of-a-kind workout. It is fantastic resistance training for toning shoulders, arms, backs, and abs and it’s easy to do. For elderly people, water aerobics provide a great way to both exercise and feel good in the water because there is no impact on their bodies. This heart-healthy exercise option creates further opportunity for a lifetime of adventure.
Swimming can bring joy to one’s life. Joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Some call it a “good feeling in the soul”. While at times it may seem distant, and we may even be afraid to acknowledge our desire, we yearn for it for ourselves and for our kids. Things as simple as seeing your child in the water having fun, when they were previously fearful, can provide moments of joy. But the real moments of joy involve connections between people and that “good feeling in the soul”. Water based activities can create a social environment that naturally allows people to interact and connect.
So, as you build your gift lists for the holidays, keep in mind the safety, educational value, adventure opportunities, and pure joy that will arise from the gift of swimming. This year, and every year, give swim smiles to your loved ones to ensure they enjoy a lifetime of adventure through swimming!

New Year, Healthier You! It is that time of year again where we all want to make a change: lose weight, get more sleep, quit smoking, get organized, drink more water, set aside more time to cook, etc. It seems easy in the beginning, but we find that we tend to lose steam as time goes by. It can be overwhelming to keep up, but this year, you can attain your goals and become a better you! Start By Assessing Your Food Choices and Lifestyle It can be hard to make a change if you do not know what you are currently doing. Track your food, exercise, sleep, or any behavior you want to change so you know what to focus on to better yourself. Change One Behavior at a Time Behaviors take time to develop, therefore, changing those behaviors will also take time. Don’t feel as though you have to tackle everything in your life; instead just start with one thing and go from there. Set Achievable Goals for Yourself Break large goals into smaller ones; one large goal can be overwhelming and hard to stick to, so smaller goals are the way to go! That way you can see instant progress and feel good for achieving those individual steps. Be sure to make goals realistic to you and your daily routine. For example, the phrase “I will eat healthier” is too vague; switch it up and say “I will add one extra vegetable to my

dinner plate” or “I will switch one of my glasses of milk from whole milk to 1% milk.” Remember that goals should be challenging but not to the point where they cannot be achieved. Make Sure Your Goals are Measurable Goals should also be measurable, meaning they should answer the question “how much” or “how many” in order for you to easily track your progress. For example, “I will get up and walk for 5 minutes every hour at work for 3 days out of the week,” is a measurable goal. Don’t Beat Yourself Up It is completely normal to have minor missteps when reaching your goals, and these are OK. Don’t let the small slips keep you from achieving your goals; just adjust for them and keep going! Ask for Help By surrounding yourself in a supportive environment, you can strengthen your resilience and manage stress levels. You can even reach out to local professionals to help you reach your goals. l

Resolving to be a
Better Co-Parent in 2020 It’s a New Year and you are ready to set your 2020 New Year’s resolutions. Most resolutions include improving your health and financially bettering yourself. But, what about setting a goal or two to help you co-parent better or make parenting time go more smoothly for your children? The new year is the perfect time to re-set, re-start, and re-focus your co-parenting.

December/January 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com
Here are some suggestions to get you started: 1. A void fighting and putting your children in the middle of adult issues. When a marriage or relationship ends, emotions are high. Fights and arguments happen. But, you can make a conscious effort to avoid having those “grownup” fights in front of your children or putting them in the middle of it. Let your children be children and focus on what to play with next rather than worrying about which parent to side with this time. 2. A void talking negatively about the other parent to, or in front of, your children. When you are mad, upset, or feeling hurt with the other parent, it is easy to lash out and bad mouth him or her without even realizing it is happening. But, children are highly impressionable and soak up everything that is said. Talking negatively about the other parent to, or in front of, your children will harm not only the other parent’s connection, but also your relationship with the children. 3. M ake an effort to have a positive attitude when your child sees the other parent. Don’t let your feelings about the other parent influence how your children feel about the other parent. Instead, put your feelings aside and set a positive example for your children by being cordial, kind and willing to work with the other parent. 4. L earn to respect your children’s feelings about the other parent. Co-parenting is hard and can become competitive because parents want to be loved by their children. But, it is not a competition. Respect your child’s feelings and let him or her create a strong relationship with the other parent. 5. S trengthen your relationship with the children. Take time to bond and build your relationship with your children. Feeling confident in your relationship with your children will help accomplish #1-4. Whether you are an experienced co-parent or just starting this new journey, you know co-parenting and sharing custody is difficult and hard work. To help get the new year off to a good start and make 2020 a better year for your children and you, take some time to set a resolution (or two) that focuses on making parenting and visitation better for your children. l

Caregiver Fatigue and Self-Care: Caring for yourself so you can care for others All parents feel overextended at times, but the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and especially coming off the holidays, can really highlight a parent’s exhaustion. It is important to recognize when you are feeling overwhelmed and stretched to the limit, and what you might do to help get yourself back on track. If left unattended, ongoing fatigue and exhaustion can lead to health issues and feelings of despair. Don’t delay, self-care is not selfish! You can’t keep going and care for others if you aren’t well yourself.

•E valuate and prioritize: Take a deep breath and prioritize the tasks at hand. Does this need to be done right now or can it wait? What can be delegated to someone else? Have you over committed and need to scale back? Create boundaries where you can say “no” when you want/need. Many times, you can relax your standards, others won’t know what did not get done. •L et others help: Say “yes” to offers of help. Don’t assume others aren’t willing to pitch in. Ask directly and specifically for what you’d like them to do. Try reaching out, what’s the worst that could happen? Surround yourself with people who support you. •L et go of the guilt: Start each day fresh and know everything you do today is important and matters, even if it feels you did not check off enough tasks from the to-do list. •R espite: You NEED to take time for yourself to recharge your own batteries. Get together for coffee with a friend or enjoy some pampering. Sometimes you need to get creative when it comes to “me time”. Consider ways you can get time for yourself such as listening to an audio book when running errands or folding laundry. •A ttend to your physical health: Pay attention to what you are eating, avoid the junk and eat healthy foods. Drink plenty of water, it aids in alertness and general energy. Get regular exercise, even 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference in how you feel. Pay attention to what your body is telling you, if you need rest, find a way to get some rest.

Winter Driving Safety Tips
Winter is here, and while the coldest season can be one of the most beautiful times of the year, it comes with some of the most challenging driving conditions. Snow, slush, and ice decrease visibility and stopping time for drivers and increase the chances of an accident. These factors remind us why it’s important to prepare your vehicle for winter travel. Here are some safety tips to ensure that your family is ready for wintertime.
Install Winter Tires
Did you know that if you can see your breath, you should consider installing winter tires on your vehicle? This is especially true if you live in an area that sees harsh winter conditions, such as high snowfall and black ice. Winter tires provide levels of traction that all-season and summer tires can’t provide in winter conditions. While all-wheel drive can be helpful, it only helps provide forward momentum in snow and doesn’t aid in stopping or steering the vehicle. “If you deal with regular snow and ice, or it is consistently below 45 degrees where you live, winter tires are the safest bet for your vehicle even if conditions are dry,” said Bryan Courol, manager of Discount Tire in Sioux Falls. “We recommend installing winter tires early to avoid the rush and be safe as soon as possible.”
Get a Tune-up & Air Pressure Check
Before any long road trips, visit your mechanic for a tune-up and other routine maintenance for your
vehicle. Have it checked for any leaks, bad parts, needed repairs and replacements. Also, be sure that your tires are properly inflated. You can find the recommended pressure on your vehicle’s tire placard (usually located on the driver’s door) or in your owner’s manual.
Check Your Spare Tire
Be sure to check your spare tire, if your car is equipped with one. Having a fully functioning spare is always important, but never more than during hazardous winter months. When you inspect your spare, it is recommended that you check the tread depth, air pressure, and age of the tire.
Keep Your Distance
Vehicles are not as quick to react in snow, so be sure to drive slowly and keep a longer following distance between you and other vehicles. This allows for more response time and helps you make more controlled stops and starts. Winter driving is inevitable, but winter safety is a choice. Following these tips will get you and your family prepared for safe driving when the time comes. l

Snow Safety With the change of seasons, icy, cold, and blustery weather is here. A lucky person who slips and falls on the ice walks away, but many are not so lucky. Each year more than 800,000 people are hospitalized due to a fall injury. Make sure that you are prepared to combat the snow and ice safely with these tips to make sure that you, your family, and your property come through the season in tip-top shape.
Prevention: 1. C lear up your property before the snow falls. Remove pots, lawn ornaments, furniture, or any other obstacles that are on or close to your driveway, sidewalks, mailbox, or front porch. Having all excess objects removed will keep your snow removal safe and efficient. 2. E arly and late season snow falls often have a higher percentage of water and create ice issues. Prior to a storm, as well as, periodically throughout a storm, put down snow melt, crusher dust, light gravel or brine pre-treat to prevent ice build-up.
Prepare: 1. M ake sure you have proper equipment and personal protective gear. Once sub-zero temps hit, it only takes about 30 minutes for exposed skin to frostbite. In addition to a heavy coat, snow pants and good boots, lined gloves, a hat, and a scarf will help keep your body warm and dry. Safety goggles or sunglasses can help protect your eyes from the bright sun or any debris that is kicked up by a snowblower. 2. T une up your snowblower. Check your blades, oil and gasoline levels to make sure your machine is functional and safe to use. 3. M ake sure you have a good, ergonomcally correct shovel. A shovel with a metal tip at the end of the scoop will help break through ice and hard packed snow.
Get Busy 1. S now removal can be a real work out. Some simple stretching before you begin will help prepare your muscles for the heavy lifting
and awkward angled movements. Focus on your core, quads, and hamstrings. 2. K eep up with the storm. Shoveling or snow blowing smaller accumulations of snow will reduce the physical stress on your body and your machines. Clearing the snow 2-3 times if necessary, will be easier to manage than doing a large quantity all at once. 3. W hen shoveling, bend low at the knees, scoop and lift upward with your legs, not your back. Turn your body sideways when depositing the snow, don’t just twist your waist. 4. F or high snowdrifts, use your shovel to break off chunks of the snow, so you aren’t lifting too much at once. 5. S tay hydrated. It may seem silly, but even surrounded by frozen water, you can get dehydrated easily, so be sure to take rest and water breaks. 6. D on’t rush. Taking the time to do a good job safely, may take a bit longer, but will be worth it when the job is complete. A rushed job can easily lead to property damage or personal injury.
Relax 1. A fter safely clearing your property, sit down with a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate and look at the great work you did while enjoying the warmth of the indoors and the beauty of the outdoors. l

Fixing Drafts
in Your House Can Make a Big Difference Many people might associate an older home with a number of quirky characteristics and having drafty areas would be one. However, drafts and air leaks are not exclusive to older homes. Newer homes can suffer from air leaks as well. No matter the age of your home if you have lived in it for awhile, chances are you have identified areas that are prone to the occasional chilly draft. Aside from the obvious discomfort, a draft can compromise your home’s heating efficiency and result in high utility bills.
recommended on smaller holes and spaces of a quarter inch or less, while foam is recommended for larger spaces up to three inches. Weather stripping is meant for areas prone to movement, i.e., doors and windows.
For the drafts or air leaks you are not aware of, there is a simple trick to track down the sources of air leakage in your home. On a cool and windy day (tough to find one of those around here!) close up all windows, exterior doors, and fireplace flues. Turn off all appliances that create air movement, i.e., furnace, exhaust fans, bathroom fans, water heater, and dryer. Light a stick of incense and navigate your home from top to bottom holding the stick near potential sources of leakage. If the smoke trails erratically or gets blown into or sucked out of a space, you have identified an air leak.
The area of your home where you might achieve the most noticeable improvement in energy efficiency is the attic. Track down the largest culprits in air leakage and tackle those. You might need to plug open stud cavities with insulation. Pay attention to potential gaps around venting for your furnace and water heater. You might need to add aluminum flashing to your list of materials.
Now that you have identified air leaks and draft areas there is an important point to consider before you go about sealing up problem areas. In doing so you may inadvertently cause another problem; trapping indoor pollutants such as carbon monoxide or radon. If you have not had your older home tested by a professional for these hazards, be sure to do so. Typically, the items needed for air sealing include caulk, spray foam, and weather stripping. Caulk is

Next is the basement. Pay careful attention to the possible gaps around water and electrical lines that pass to the outside, including the dryer vent. You may want to seal along the rim joist which is where the cement walls meet the wood frame, and the gap between the sill plate and the foundation. Finally, the doors and windows represent a small percentage of the impact on your energy use, but the easiest do-it-yourself project. Plastic sheeting over windows, door sweeps on doors and weatherstripping are all quick and affordable fixes that will noticeably diminish those very noticeable drafts. l

K ills and removes germs, dust mites, pollutants, and allergens 2. Helps prevent mold growth 3. Extends the life of your carpet and rugs 4. It’s warm, relaxing, and a great way to decompress our mind after a busy day. With today’s smart TV’s, it has become easier than ever to keep active while still enjoying our favorite shows. It’s no accident that many of us have moved our exercise equipment into the family room. It’s an easy way to not only keep up on our favorite shows but also get in a great total body workout at the same time. A benefit of watching a series show, most are an hour long and we find ourselves losing track of time and push to new distances without missing a plot line! Another benefit with today’s technology is that our smart TV has access to many apps that are geared towards fitness. Between stretches, cardio, yoga, or strength training we have direct access to apps that we can download onto the TV. With the touch of a button it transforms your family room into a functional gym as well as a peaceful retreat. In a matter of seconds, we can switch from a full body workout to the latest episode of your favorite show! This has also made it easy for my kids to join in and discover their own fitness goals. There are dozens of online “Kid-Healthy” fitness apps to make staying active a family affair. Together you can turn a lazy evening on the couch into a family workout, pushing each other to do better than the last time. Not only does this improve the nights sleep that follows, but it also allows us to wake up refreshed and ready to face the day.
