welcome

Welcome

to our Familyfest Issue!

In March, when Covid-19 arrived it made a huge impact on all of our families. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen to Familyfest this year. As I watched announcements of things getting canceled this summer, I knew we had to figure out something for Familyfest. I didn’t have the heart to tell all of you “See you in 2021.” It has been a tough couple of months and our families needed a version of Familyfest, but it had to be safe! We are excited to announce the Familyfest Fun Cruise this year! We will be doing giveaways throughout July on the Familyfest and Hood Facebook and Instagram pages leading up to the cruise! Mark your calendars for July 25th from 9am-2pm to join us for a Fun Family Cruise around the Sioux Empire. We can’t forget about Fancy either! Fancy will be cruisin’ the community throughout the entire month of July! Her planner is getting filled with fun and she’s excited to spread her rainbow unicorn joy all through the Sioux Empire as she visits businesses! Make sure you are following the Hood Magazine and Familyfest on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date with all the fun! You can also check out our websites to get all of the details: www.thehoodmagazine.com and www.familyfestsf.com! We hope you are able to join us for the Fun Cruise!

our favorite for some of er baby beginn es! food recip

by Jaclyn Small

A New Month, a New Milestone I think I say, “This is my favorite stage” at every new milestone of having a baby. However, introducing solids REALLY is my favorite. I love when babies are old enough to experiment with new tastes and textures and I love seeing their reaction and excitement. For the ease of it, I have always opted to make my own baby food with my children. I know it may seem easier to grab jars or containers at the store, but I have found making a couple batches of food at home to be quick and simple. When my children are ready to try out foods, I will use foods like avocados and bananas that can be easily smashed on a plate and offered. We’ve dubbed this incredibly easy meal a “bananacado” in our house. When I feel like we are ready to introduce more items, I find what works best is to pick two foods and make a couple batches of purees up to keep in the refrigerator or freezer for quick access. The internet offers a ton of valuable suggestions of good food combinations to try, as well as the ages that they should be introduced. To start, I like to pick an item like squash or sweet potatoes and cook them in the oven until soft. Then all that’s left is to simply puree them up in a blender. I will keep out a couple

of servings and freeze the rest in an ice cube tray, it’s as easy as that! Of course, you should always check with your doctor before introducing solids to your baby. Babies are ready for this step at different times and you want to make sure they can safely start to incorporate solids into their diet before doing so. For me, my babies have always given me strong clues that they were ready. Besides being able to sit up and have strong head control, the next biggest thing I look for is interest! If my baby is interested in what I’m eating and trying to grab at my food I know it’s time! Whenever and however you start to show your baby some new options in the kitchen, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! It’s messy, but insanely entertaining. Make sure you have that camera ready too, because those messy faces are usually picture perfect! l

What you need: • T oilet paper or paper towel roll • Colored paper • Black paper • Pipe cleaner • Googly eyes • Glue • Paint or paint markers • Battery operated votive candle

Instructions: Cut an arch out of the toilet paper roll going about half way up the roll. Cover the cut roll with black paper. You could just paint the roll black too if that works better for your family. Cut a small piece of colored paper and tape or glue it inside the roll when you cut out your arch. This will make the bug’s belly. Cut out wings and tape or glue them on. Cut a circle out of the paper and glue on to the front for the head. Add your eyes and using a paint marker, draw a mouth. Finally, use the pipe cleaners to give your bug some cute little antennas. When your bug is all assembled, put your votive candle (must be battery operated, do not use a real flame!) inside the toilet paper roll and watch your bug illuminate! These are super cute to make multiple ones in different colors and line them all up!

Giving a Lifelong Impact For 38 years, Apple Tree Learning Centers has looked to uphold three core pillars in their overall mission to instill healthy lifestyle choices in future generations – give high-quality education and exceptional service within a clean, safe place. High-Quality Education. Holding themselves up to the South Dakota early-learning guidelines, Apple Tree hopes to continue to look for ways to ensure that the children who walk through their doors are as well-prepared as possible for the world. With all the learning they do, Lori Braley from Apple Tree comments what she has witnessed— “so many children I’ve seen have gotten a nice strong base… becoming academic overachievers” and “so often keeping lifelong friends.” The goal is to develop the “self-help skills” children will need throughout their lives. From independence to confidence and so much more, the folks of Apple Tree look to empower the children they meet.

SPONSORED FEATURE

A Safe Place. Apple Tree is a safe “home-awayfrom-home” environment, as Lori would say. Focused on the participating children, it’s a place that puts forth great efforts to ensure the best is in mind for its kids. For one thing, screen-time is discouraged, in order to support interpersonal relationships and foster friendships. Children are encouraged to do humanities studies outside, enjoying the sun and the peace of mind that comes from this learning. The overall goal is to help kids feel “capable, smart, and strong,” Lori says. Above-and-Beyond Service. With each and every child that they meet and teach, Apple

Tree is looking to make an impact that is lifelong. To ensure this, they’re always looking for ways to improve their teaching strategies across the board. They pride themselves in being inclusive and welcoming to all families, accommodating and open to new ways to harmoniously fill the unique needs of all their children. Basic humanitarian values are the main focus, but in the end, children always seem to take away so much more from Apple Tree.

parent

by Amanda Engel, The Duncan Law Firm

Adopting a Stepchild Adoption is a special gift a stepparent can give a stepchild. It is a way to demonstrate a stepparent’s love and commitment to a stepchild. It can give the child security, stability, and a sense of family belonging. Before you begin the adoption process, it is important to understand not only the emotional significance, but also the legal significance of the adoption process. Adoption is a lifelong commitment. Adoption makes a stepparent legally and financially responsible for the child, regardless of whether the stepparent stays married to the child’s other parent. Adopting a stepchild gives the stepparent the legal authority to make decisions on behalf of the child, including decisions related to daily life activities, medical care, and education. Before a stepparent can adopt a stepchild, the biological parent’s rights must be terminated. A child cannot have three legal parents. This is a necessary legal step. The biological parent’s rights can be voluntarily or involuntarily terminated by a court. If the biological parent contests the termination, it is a much more difficult process. Courts take the termination of parental rights very seriously.

Once the biological parent’s parental rights are terminated, the adoption by the stepparent can proceed by filing a petition and other appropriate documents with the court. Generally a court will have a hearing on the matter. Depending on the circumstances surrounding your entire adoption journey, you may need to obtain more documentation or take additional steps to schedule your adoption hearing. Once the appropriate legal steps are taken and approved by the court, the judge grants the adoption. Each case and circumstance is unique, so the amount of legal steps and time it takes will depend on each individual situation. Having the assistance of an experienced attorney can ensure that you have someone knowledgeable guiding you through the adoption process to ensure it goes correctly. If you want to learn more about this process, reach out to an attorney today. l

Apps that are actually

Good for Your Kids

As if the parental ‘love-hate’ relationship with electronics wasn’t bad enough, distance learning for many school-aged children led to a greater attachment and several more hours of staring at a screen. Even if your child is taking screen time privileges to the max, using apps and websites that are educational or even help foster age-appropriate developmental skills can put your mind at ease. Here are a few that LifeScape therapists have used and recommend!

•S elf-care: Accessible Chef (accessiblechef.com) is a website that has a collection of free visual recipes to help individuals of all abilities learn to cook. Tips for Keeping Your Cookouts and

Picnics Safe With summer in full swing, the risk of foodborne illness heats up. Grilling season is officially here. But as the weather heats up, so does the risk of foodborne illness. Sanford Health dieticians explain how to stay safe and healthy during grill outs and picnics this summer. Meat Any meats should be kept in a cooler with ice, for no longer than three to four hours before being cooked. Coolers that are fuller tend to stay cold longer than one that’s partially filled, so be sure to continue refilling it with ice. While preparing food, use separate cutting boards, knives and plates for raw and cooked meats to avoid cross contamination. When grilling, it’s important to make sure all meats are cooked thoroughly. Use a thermometer to check that all meats are cooked to a safe temperature: • Beef or pork: 145 degrees • Ground meats: 160 degrees • Poultry: 165 degrees

Serving food Be sure to use new, clean plates and utensils when serving cooked food or handling ready-to-eat foods such as fruits and vegetables. Never reuse items that touched raw meat. Other perishable foods such as salads, pastas, deli meat and dairy should be kept cool until served and shouldn’t sit out for more than two hours. If the temperature is above 90 degrees, do not keep

food out for longer than one hour. Throw away all unrefrigerated food that exceeds this time limit.

Keep it cool When using coolers, keep them out of direct sunlight and try to limit the number of times you’re opening them. On hot days, beverage coolers are more likely to be opened more often and exposed to warmer temperatures frequently. Using separate coolers for food and drinks can help maintain a lower cooler temperature and also reduce the risk of foodborne illness from raw foods that leak. Store leftovers in a sealed container and keep in a cooler. As long as they are properly refrigerated, leftovers can be reused for up to three days.

Healthy ideas Hydration and healthy eating are two more things to keep in mind on hot, summer days. Drink lots of water and try to avoid caffeine or sugary drinks. Sparkling waters are a great alternative, still giving flavor but without the caffeine or sugars in pop. When it comes to menu planning, keep everything in balance and moderation and watch portion sizes. Mix in fruits and vegetables as sides instead of chips, or buy whole grain buns for complex carbohydrates and fiber. l July/August 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com |

When to Replace Tires

Summer is coming to a close and that can only mean one thing: it’s back to school time! As you run through your back-to-school checklist make sure you remember the importance of safe tires. Whether you’re running the carpooling or need a reliable vehicle for your college-bound young adult, ensuring you get the best start to the new school year means knowing if it’s time to replace your tires. Here are some factors to consider that will help determine when it’s time to replace your tires:

Irregular Tread Wear It’s normal for the tread of your tires to gradually become shallower and performance to change as they’re used. However, if one of your tires appears to be wearing down faster than the others, it’s most likely time for a regular tire rotation to address the uneven wear. Ignoring uneven tire wear for too long can increase the chance of degraded performance and ride comfort, hydroplaning, even tire failure when driving at highway speeds. You can easily check your tread depth by performing the penny test: simply stick a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s time to replace those tires.

Bulging and Bubbling Tires Have you ever seen a tire with a lump protruding from the sidewall? These bubbles or bulges are usually caused by impact damage. When a tire hits a sharp object in the road, the force from the weight and speed of the vehicle is focused in the small area of contact. This compresses the tire enough that the inside of the sidewall is pinched and damaged, causing a small hole on the inside tire-liner layer.

Sidewall bubbles or bulges indicate there is structural damage to the tire that cannot be repaired. If you notice a bubble on one of your tires, use your spare until you can get a replacement.

Tire Age Your vehicle will eventually need new tires, even if you don’t do much driving. The average life of a tire is determined by the conditions they’re exposed to – temperature changes, sun exposure, usage, and maintenance all contribute to the rate at which a tire ages. It is recommended that your tires be changed at least every six years, even under the most minimal use. This ensures that your tires haven’t degraded without your knowledge.

Tire Mileage It almost goes without saying, but the more miles on your tires, the faster they’ll need to be replaced. Proper and timely tire maintenance is crucial to safety. Rotate your tires every 6,000-8,000 miles to help prolong tread life. If you commute or drive frequently, logging over 12,000 miles per year, your tread may wear down to an unusable level within three to four years. Replacing your tires before they show any of the signs mentioned above is a great way to save yourself from expensive repair costs and overall inconvenience. l

Smoking food is an enjoyable way to share your culinary talents with others and invest in family time all at once. Smoking versus grilling requires a certain demeanor to learn all of the ins and outs of the processes and it does take dedication, determination and patience...lots of patience! With so many advancements in new technologies available thru online websites and mobile applications it is now allowing everyone the opportunity to get onboard and become culinary experts in their own backyard. To begin, you need to decide on the smoker of choice. There are lots of smokers on the market. Leading the charge is the Traeger brand along with Green Egg and a brand-new competitor in the smoking world, but a veteran in the grilling world, is Weber. Once you have decided on a grill smoker, it’s time to become a “Chef d’ Backyard”. Choosing your cuts of meat will take some research and provide you opportunities to explore apps that will take you step-by-step through the process of creating the fragrance of BBQ throughout your neighborhood. Unlike grilling, when smoking you want to maintain a low temp for long periods of time. One of the very important elements in smoking is temperature. Ensuring the smoker doesn’t vary temperature too much throughout the process is vital, as temperature spikes can be detrimental to the final result in the meat. Checking the temperature internally every couple hours ensures that your smoker is operating within acceptable ranges. It also allows the smoker to hold the set temperature and alert the user when the desired internal temperature is reached. The advent of Smart technology helps to take the guessing out of the equation. As the COVID-19 Pandemic wrapped the globe, consumers found themselves looking for new and innovative ways to cook while at home. Smoking has provided many folks new options, and assisted in allowing more time for family. Spring has shuffled in to summer and we all want to get outside, breathe in some fresh air and soak up some sun. One of the best ways to do that is to fire up the smoker! It’s a socially distanced event and provides a heath element in providing us a daily dose of vitamin D. l

Embracing

New HVAC Alternatives Back in the day, the cartoon Jetson family gave us a peek into what is now reality...the remote automation of your home’s cooling and heating system. Today’s technology allows for the efficient and convenient operation of your household HVAC system both onsite and remotely. The obvious advantage is the ability to more efficiently regulate your home environment from a distance. Giving your HVAC system the opportunity to efficiently cool or heat before returning home ensures savings and a comfortable environment upon your arrival. Newer heating systems are relying on more efficient heat pumps which alternate between natural gas and electricity. They cost more to install but save the homeowner money in the long run. These systems can be programmed to achieve the desired temperature utilizing natural gas and then go into energy saving mode. In the ever-evolving world of eco-friendly technology, air conditioning is adapting to include solar power operation and natural gas. Requiring less energy and fewer moving parts these appliances last longer and require less maintenance. Solar energy is also an efficient alternative for heating needs. Thermal energy captured by solar panels is converted into heat via a process using water and antifreeze routed through a heat exchanger. Hot water recirculation is another advancement in HVAC technology that can greatly reduce costs and save water. Think about how much water is wasted waiting for cool tap water to warm up. With recirculation, unused water which has already been heated is

released immediately when the hot water faucet is turned on, eliminating the need for reheating. Another expanding alternative to the efficient heating and cooling of homes is using a geothermal piping system that consists of a series of underground pipes that channel water to achieve a desired temperature possible due to the consistency of underground temperatures. A compressor, fan and pump distribute the regulated air throughout the home. You know those little packets you see in some packages that are meant to keep things dry and they are labeled “inedible”? That is known as a desiccant and it is a material meant to absorb water from the air. A desiccant enhanced evaporative unit is an air-cooling system that absorbs water into a honeycomb material while a fan blows air over the cool evaporating water and then releases the cool air into the living space. These systems require minimal energy and do not rely on refrigerants. Obviously, many of these alternative HVAC solutions are more easily attained in the construction of a new home, however there are a number of ways for older home owners to achieve more efficiency and comfort by implementing updated technology and renovations. An HVAC professional can help you discover all of the possibilities in your new or more experienced home. l
