Dad Must Haves

by Jaclyn Small

Putting together a baby registry or shopping for a new addition is fun and exciting! As a mom, it is easy to get wrapped up in the “cuteness” of all things baby. Not to mention, we often think of items that make the most sense for us during pregnancy, post-partum and the first year. But... what about dads? I happen to know some pretty amazing dads, and I got their input on Daddy’s Must Haves: 1. C omfortable rocker/recliner chair. Worry less about what is the perfect match to the nursery and more about comfort. Nothing can beat a newborn sleeping on your chest. Invest in a chair that will call your name to spend your days soaking in those baby snuggles! 2. C ar Seat Base. An infant car seat goes without saying, but one thing to remember is to research the base! Not all car seat bases are the same and it’s best to look for one that fits your vehicle and offers a convenient install process. Don’t forget to take them into consideration when doing your shopping!

3. B ackpack. Backpacks offer all the conveniences of storage...without the hassle of taking up an extra hand. Let Dad be a part of the shopping process for a backpack that he will be comfortable wearing as well! 4. B ottle warmer. If your baby isn’t used to bottles, especially cold bottles, a bottle warmer is a life saver! They are inexpensive and the first time you are home by yourself with your hangry newborn, you’ll be grateful to have something that can get that bottle ready in just a few minutes! 5. E asy one-piece sleepers. To bring a sense of ease to your life during those blow-out or middle of the night changes, make sure you have one piece sleepers. The ones that close with magnets are definitely a favorite in our house! l

Coffee Filter

Rainbows

What you need: Coffee filters Markers White and pink paper Googly eyes Glue Scissors Water spray bottle

Instructions:

Flatten out your coffee filter. Using your markers, add colors to the coffee filter going in a circular pattern. Spray your coffee filter with water and watch as the colors magically spread and blend together! Set it aside to dry for a couple of hours. Once your coffee filter is dry, cut it in half. Cut a cloud shape, out of white paper. Make sure your cloud is large enough to cover the bottom half of your coffee filter. Cut two small circles out of pink paper for the cheeks. Begin to assemble your rainbow by gluing the cloud to the coffee filter, then glue the eyes and cheeks on to the cloud. Finish up your project by using a black marker to add a simple smile.

Inspiring Teens in the Community

What makes this person an inspiring teen? Thalía has a huge heart, more than any kid I know. She has so much empathy for others she would give someone her shoes or coat if she could. Thalía went through a bullying event every week for about 4-5 months during her cheer days in 2016-2017. The coaches knew and so did the director; they helped in every healthy way they could. We found out about this girl who was bullying Thalía was from a foster home and had some problems expressing herself in a healthy way. After 4 months of bullying, Thalía chose her bully to have the award next. She told her she was pretty and nice. For her to have chosen her own bully still stays with me at

how amazing she handled the situation and still loved the girl who made her hate what she loved doing; cheer.

What are five qualities this teen displays?

Giving, competitive, compassionate, energetic, goalachieving.

What is one quote that you think describes this teen?

She loves the quote that “it’s not the crown that makes the queen, it’s the heart of the queen that makes the crown.”

Dad TIPS

Now more than ever we need to support each other in every way possible. Difficult times can unite or divide people...but our community will not be divided! We are a community of parents and we will fiercely love each other through thick or thin. We asked a few local dads if they would share their best advice...Dad to Dad. We see you, we hear you and we are here for you!

Ozzy Kienast

If you’re tired...your wife is tired! Help out! If your spouse is working and you put the kids to sleep and it’s tough and your wife makes it look easy, tell her it’s not as easy as she makes it look! This recently happened to me when Hannah went back to work!

Kyle Kapitan

“Best thing we have done...Art Hub!! An App that is so exciting and engaging. It has been a spectacular way to spend quality time with the kids. It’s entertaining, educational, fun and a great place to laugh and enjoy each other as we do a project together that is individual and collectively a family affair. The family that draws together is drawn together.”

Travis Remme Ryan Oaks

Our kids are kids once. Don’t take everything in life with so much seriousness that we take the fun out of life for our kiddos. Don’t be afraid to tape your nose up with scotch tape or wear your clean underoos on your head like a super hero mask. Have fun.

As Dad’s, now more than ever, it is important to remember that our kids look up to us. They are watching and will remember how we handled difficult times later in their lives. We will never get this time back with our kids again at the ages they are. Things may not be perfect for our families right now. But what is important is to remember that our kids look up to us. Depending on their ages, they will remember this time...good or bad, the same way we remember times from our childhood. The memories we make now as families and life lessons we teach our kids will be what they will look back on someday to help them through a difficult time. That’s what matters.

Jeremy Brown

Be the man your sons want to follow and the husband your daughters would want to marry. Let them see you in action around them and with them. Treat your wife like the warrior queen she is and be the example!

Andy McVey Michael Murdy

As a father of two girls, something that stuck with me is that as their dad I have the responsibility to teach them how to be treated by how I treat others, and especially how I treat their mom. It’s my responsibility to teach them what healthy relationships look like.

First, and this has become cliche, but we’re in this together. Keep the whole family involved - from activities to chores to deciding on and preparing meals. We do it together and help each other. Second, BE PRESENT. My wife and I are both essential workers (she works from home) and we split the homework duties with our son. My time at home with them is limited as time goes by fast at night, so making the time we do have count is important. We play games, enjoy meals, and do puzzles together. Becoming the

BEST PARENTON DAD EDITI

Parenting is a journey that takes a lifetime. Throughout our parenting journey we will all experience people who mold and shape us into the parents that we have become today. We wanted to hear about who has had the most profound influence on making you the parent that your children love and adore. Grab a few tissues, snuggle your babies and let these stories inspire you to be an inspiration to another parent today!

Joel Engel: Watch these videos to hear who made an impact in these dad’s lives.

“It’s so hard to pick one person who has influenced my parenting, but my wife Amanda sets the gold standard every day for me to follow. From day one, she’s demonstrated so much patience and love for our kids. There’s not much time for self-reflection in the moment as a parent, but when I reflect on who I’m doing my best to emulate, it’s Amanda.”

Jeremy Aylward Neil Brunner:

Brian Allen

22 |

June 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com

The person or people that have influenced my parenting journey would have to be my sister and brother in law. Some may think that they live close to us but actually they live in Vancouver B.C. They have 3 kids of their own and are 6 years older then myself. They have always been someone that my wife and I have been able to bounce things off of when we have come against situations we haven’t dealt with before. Also they have very similar parenting styles and religious views which helps in having someone that is looking through the same glass and is guiding you with the same values and principles that are important to us both.

Joseph Thompson:

Recently I was asked to show someone I love how much they mean to me for all the influence they had in my life that shaped me into the father I am today. Growing up I was sent to private schools for education, but I always had someone in my corner who I could go to when things got tough, my grandfather. My Grandpa Roy was a World War 2 pilot with a nononsense attitude. While he was tough as nails, he showed me love, honor and discipline. He went to my baseball games, school plays and was there for me the day I graduated from high school. What he showed me meant more to me than I can say. He showed me that an awesome father is there for their child through every life event, from baseball games to high school graduations to beyond. He showed me honor in that he helped me to understand pride for myself, my family, and my country. However, the biggest thing he showed me was that in life, God comes first and a great father loves and respects his family.

Justin Garry:

The biggest influences in my parenting journey started with my parents. Since the “How to Raise a Child” instruction manual has yet to be included at birth you find other ways! My teachers and coaches helped too! Watching the techniques used in classrooms was etched in my mind at an early age growing up with a teacher for a parent. With an business person as my other parent, chores and allowance/rewards became an early influencer for me. Now as a parent, it’s a little bit of those mixed in with an occasional break provided by Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood or some princess show on the iPad to keep me sane.

Tyler Stunes:

“Never be too grown up to dream”. When asked who the biggest influence on my parenting style has been when it comes to my own children, I instantly know that no one has been more of a factor then my own Mother. Now I know most people are going to say that, of course he would choose his Mother, how cliché. However, she has always taught me no matter the circumstance to fully believe in myself, even when the cards seem stacked against me. Combine that with the best line I have ever heard, “never be too grown up to dream”. I believe that as adults we too regularly become complacent in routines and forget to remember our wonderful imagination and dreams, we had as a child. To me that equals the perfect formula to remember always let your children dream and let their imagination run wild, and I believe that has been the biggest influence on my parenting style.

Tips for teaching your child to

Be Independent Being patient and giving children opportunities can increase their confidence. When your child was an infant, you or another adult probably entertained them for most of their waking hours. Now you’re left wondering why your toddler won’t leave your side or why he or she can’t do anything without your assistance. Independence is a skill you’ll have to teach your child. I CAN DO IT MYSELF! Some toddlers are independent and want to do everything by themselves. Others won’t let you leave their sight even while playing. Here are some tips for teaching independence: • Independent play. If your toddler doesn’t play well alone, start with small steps. If your child demands your attention, start by sitting beside him or her silently, not joining in the play. Once your child’s absorbed in play, move to another part of the room. Eventually move to a different room where you can still supervise your child from afar. • Don’t hover. If your child is engrossed in independent play, don’t hover over him or her. Ensure your child’s safety, but take a step back while he or she is playing alone. • Independent tasks. Encourage independence with daily tasks. Putting on a coat or brushing teeth seem like simple efforts to us as adults, but young children have to learn to do these things on their own. Let your child practice these skills daily to get better at them. • Making choices is very empowering to toddlers. Offering your

24 |

June 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com

child a limited number of choices builds selfconfidence and decision-making skills. •P raise play and efforts. If your child is playing alone, wait until he or she is either nearly or completely finished playing. Then let your child know how well he or she was playing alone. Give praise for doing tasks like putting on socks or cleaning up toys. Even if your child doesn’t do it correctly, notice their efforts and let your child know it’s OK to make mistakes. •T he child’s level. Place some items at the child’s level so he or she can be more independent. If you put dishes on his or her level, your child can get his or her own cup, bowl and spoon. Try putting a little milk or water in a small, child-sized pitcher and letting your child pour his or her own drink. It’s important to teach independence so that in a few years, when your toddler isn’t at your side all of the time, your child still feels confident. Be patient and give your child opportunities to practice. Soon you’ll see your toddler grow up to be an independent person. l

Man Cave 2020 Man cave 2020… What is its purpose? What is its need? Transforming an extra room or an area in the basement into a “man cave” is a luxury and a critical need at the same time. Why a man cave? Is it simply a playroom for grown men? Probably not. It is more likely a place for a guy to proudly show off all of the things that the rest of the family doesn’t want scattered throughout the house and/or those unique items that friends and family don’t need to see every day. Items like his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collection, coupled together with dozens of pictures from college and the Nintendo game console and variety of controllers along with the vintage PlayStations 1, 2 or 3. Additionally, a man cave also clearly saves on picking up and cleaning throughout the remainder of the house. This is a benefit to everyone! Most fellas will tell you when they come home they need to find a place where one can decompress and allow the day to be exfoliated! The man cave fills that role. It also serves as a place to watch unending sports programs, golf, boxing, football, racing, curling, pigeon racing and multiple other sporting events. A man cave can also double as an office space for those guys that need to work remotely during our times of social distancing!

It doesn’t take much to create a man cave! You need a good solid sound system like an ONKYO Receiver with Klipsch speakers that can carry 1000 Watts of sound, an LG OLED television (no smaller than 65 inches...hopefully an 86 inch one to be able to see the blades of grass on the putting green of the PGA tournament or the sweat dripping off the brow of the right tackle during the Pro Bowl!). You’ll also want to stay comfortable with a good couch that has at least one recliner built in with a couple of other reclining chairs that are critical for sports watching/ sleeping and entertaining other friends. Don’t forget a good refrigerator that also has an icemaker to keep beverages cold during any event. Yes the man cave clearly serves many purposes. The most important of which is that it allows the balance of the house to be free range for everyone else and kept clutter free. So, this Father’s Day take a look around the house to see what might be that perfect place for Dads man cave and then later this summer we will talk about Moms she-shed. l

What to Get Dad This Father’s Day

This has been an unusual year to say the least, so it is worth mentioning that this Father’s Day (June 21st) is the day after the first official day of summer (June 20th). So, prior to getting his day of devotion on Sunday, Dad will likely spend the first day of summer milling about the yard doing outdoor projects...and one of them might be tuning up the AC.

Given the challenge of finding Dad an appropriate and appreciated gift (ties are not REALLY appreciated) we’d like to suggest some items for the dad who prides himself as a HVAC savvy homeowner. 1. H VAC Filter Replacement Subscription Probably one of the easiest and most affordable thing a homeowner can do to maintain their HVAC system and the quality of their home’s air is to regularly replace the filter. However, this is one of those out of sight, out of mind home maintenance chores. You can sign Dad up to receive a perfect-sized filer at three or six month intervals from SecondNature.com. 2. H eadlamp or cap light Troubleshooting HVAC is a process best left to two hands and adequate lighting. Make sure Dad is properly armed to do battle with a light that straps onto his melon like a coal miner or if Dad is a cap wearer, get him a lighted cap. Either way, Dad will be able to safely light up what’s in front of him and will undoubtedly find a myriad other handy uses for his enlightened cranium. 3. B ucket Tool Bag Every dad knows the value of a five gallon plastic bucket. Now add to that bucket a tool belt that snugly hugs the bucket, organizes and holds Dad’s tools and leaves the bucket available for its main purpose...filling it with trash, discarded bolts, nails, etc. As much as any Dad relishes the idea of donning a tool belt, they are a pain to adjust as Dad’s waistline wanders. This way Dad can have his tool belt and his dignity! 4. C ollapsible Garbage Container Instead of Dad having to haul a trash can or garbage bin down to the basement for HVAC maintenance clean up or for any inside trash collection, get him a handy collapsible garbage bin. It’s perfect for transferring trash from basement to trailer to dump. Again, numerous other uses, i.e. camping, picnicking, traveling. 5. R emote Digital Thermostat If you want to go big and really impress Dad, give him the superhero power of controlling his castle’s environment from anywhere he roams. There are numerous choices and function levels of thermostat systems, including voice control. But most attractive to Dad will be the ability to remotely adjust the home’s temperature via a smart app so that once he returns to his domain, it will be the perfect temperature to plop down in his recliner...hopefully not in boxer mode. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who make the extra effort to keep their house a home! l

Get Your ATV or UTV

Ready For Summer Fun

Whether you like single riding on ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) or alongside friends on UTVs (utilityterrain vehicle), there’s nothing like tearing up the trails on an off-road adventure. If you’re one of many planning a backroad escape this summer, there are a few things you should consider. Tire selection is key. Other than the type of vehicle you’re driving, think about your skillset, the terrain where you’re riding and the difficulty of the trails. Also, new tires are a perfect gift for Father’s Day! The tread of your tire is one of its most critical design components. Different tread patterns divide off-road tires into four different categories: all-terrain, mud tires, sand tires, and racing tires. To help you better understand which tire is best suited for your needs, here’s a breakdown of each and their intended purpose: All-Terrain Tires All-terrain tires – also known as all-purpose tires – have tread designed to tackle a wide range of different surfaces. They do well on soft-packed trails, in water and light mud. Their tread patterns can vary quite a bit, but they’re fairly tight for increased contact. Terrain tires are designed to improve the contact of the tire to the ground, allowing it to hook better when accelerating, braking or turning. All-terrain ATV/UTV tires are good in a variety of mild to moderate terrains. Mud Tires Mud tires are designed for optimal performance in, you guessed it, mud. They typically have very wide tread patterns, large individual lugs and void spaces between the lugs. Mud tires are made to be selfcleaning – they actively push mud out and away from the contact patch of the tire. Their directional tread

pattern allows for better grip in mud. These tires are normally made from stiffer rubber, so they don’t grip hard terrain as well. Sand Tires While the other ATV/UTV tires may provide some small use in other settings, sand tires are designed exclusively for sand, often floating on top of the surface. The tread patterns are so particular - not only will you get little use out of them in hard-packed surfaces or in mud, but they can be easily damaged outside of their intended environment. Sand tires typically have staggered tread patterns, meaning the front tires have a different tread pattern than the rear tires. The rear tires, known as drive tires, have a tread pattern that features extreme amounts of void with large scoop-like tread lugs. In contrast, the front tires usually feature either a solid rubber block down the middle or a smooth tread without any individual lugs. Racing Tires If you use your ATV/UTV for trail racing, you need a tire that has a strong grip and steering response. ATV/ UTV racing tires are designed for just that. They are lightweight and have a more regulated tread pattern, sharp edges and a softer compound. This delivers excellent grip and constant contact on harder compact trails that are often associated with trail racing. Racing tires are designed for hard-packed surfaces; therefore, they do not do well in loose surfaces like sand or mud. l
