Safe Sleep for Infants
Babies yet to reach their first birthdays need attention and love, especially when it comes to where they sleep and how to keep them as safe as possible. The guidelines are pretty clear, yet concern for these little ones makes it worth reviewing them, refreshing our memories, and practicing the proper methods every time. The American Academy of Pediatrics updated guidelines in 2016. Research showed key fundamentals that can help reduce rates of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS. The guidelines are commonly known as the “Back to Sleep” program. “The ‘Back’ in the program’s title actually refers to the proper sleeping position – putting the child on his or her back when it’s bedtime,” said pediatric nurse practitioner Kim Peterson, DNP, Avera Medical Group Marshall. These guidelines also tell any adults caring for sleeping infants to use firm mattresses in cribs and to keep the sleep areas clear. “No bumpers, toys or blankets,” Peterson said. “This removes potential choking or entrapment hazards.” Courtney Blomme, PNP, pediatric provider at Avera Medical Group Marshall, underlined what Peterson said,
and added the updated guidelines also advise parents about infant crib location in the home. “Parents should have the crib or bassinet in their bedroom for babies younger than 12 months,” Blomme said. “The evidence shows this step, combined with a blanket- and toy-free sleeping space, can help reduce SIDS risk by 50 percent.” Blomme also reminds parents to carefully consider sleepwear for babies. They should wear sleepers or swaddling sacks. These are the safest clothing for them for naps or at bedtime. Peterson and Blomme point to the fact that breastfeeding also reduces overall risk, whether baby receives only breast milk or in combination with formula. Following these guidelines will ensure a safe sleep environment for your child and a sense of security for parents. n

Fun Ways to

Improve Your Child’s Handwriting
9
Summer brings a much-needed break for kids of all ages. There’s a little more freedom to explore, spend time with family, and just have fun. Typical summer activities tend to naturally enhance big motor skills – and that’s a good thing! However, more outside play and increased use of tablets and other technology, can erase progress made during the school year on handwriting. Handwriting is far more complex than most realize. There are essentially three components to good handwriting that parents can easily monitor: • Formation
• Position
• Spacing
Letter formation is different than letter construction. Letters should be formed starting from the top, not the bottom, and should start on the left and not the right. Learning Without Tears® offers an excellent handwriting curriculum and offers free downloads at lwtears.com. Positioning means letters should sit right on the line. Letters like g, j, y, etc. dip below the line. Sizing should also be consistent and all capitals should be the same size. Finally, there should be proper space between letters and between words. Placing a finger after a word helps ensure enough space is allowed. Sitting at a table and putting pencil to paper day after day over the summer is, fortunately, not necessary. Consider these alternative fun and creative ways to practice letter formation and enhance fine motor skills:
• F inger paints – Use fingers, Q-tips, cotton balls, or paint brushes to write letters and words. Or, put paint in a Ziploc bag, lay it flat, and draw letters with a Q-tip. • Sidewalk chalk is great on black construction paper, as well as on concrete. • Dry erase markers on a mirror make for fun messages to be discovered. • P lay-Doh – Roll out snake-like pieces and form letters. Easier clean-up outside is a bonus. • Squeeze paint or icing from a condiment squeeze bottle to form letters. • If your kids can’t get enough of that messy play outside, an outdoor paint easel can provide hours of fun. Even cleaning it is fun, by using a garden hose! Just five minutes a day will have powerful results for your child, and make transitioning into the next school year a breeze. Happy writing! n
• D raw letters in sand, dirt, cornstarch, flour, or rice. It ‘erases’ easily! Trays or bins keep the medium contained.
• Form letters in shaving cream – on nearly any surface. Add food coloring for extra fun!

Even in the most exciting moments, when your team is doing well and you’re feeling at your strongest, there can be times when you need to talk to your coach about something difficult. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of “the talk”: Don’t get personal
First of all, make sure you’re going into the conversation with knowledge of what you want to say. It sounds obvious, but if you really want to make your coach focus on what you’re saying, you need to be sure YOU know what that is! Write down the most important points and practice saying them out loud before you go.
Try to keep the conversation neutral, and keep personal feelings out of it. If you’re upset about your place in the team, give a list of reasons why you think it should be reevaluated, and not why you think the coach was wrong. Keep your tone neutral and positive, and you’ll be surprised how successful your negotiations can be.
Pick the best time Practice is a busy time for everyone, so ask your coach before practice begins if you can take a few minutes of their time once practice is over. That way they can give you their full attention without the distractions of everyone else. Another option is to set up an appointment outside of practice hours, if you think the conversation will take a long time.
Find support It’s okay to bring someone for support. This could be a teammate, friend, parent, or another adult you trust. Explain to them the situation before you go, so they can be fully supportive when you’re talking.
child
Be prepared
13
Leave with a plan Before you end your talk with your coach, make sure everyone knows the plan going forward. Come up with a few action steps, and follow up on them in a few days. Regardless of what your difficult conversation is about, by following these simple steps you can make sure your coach hears you, has time for you and understands what you want. Be confident, bring support and good luck! n

Creative Camps: More than Creating
What are your kids doing this summer? Camps are a wonderful way to focus the extra time and energy children have during the summer months on something creative. Aside from being something fun to do, camps can create opportunities to forge new friendships, build social skills and learn something new. Creative camps, in particular, offer benefits extending beyond a creative outlet. Skill Development Creative projects and activities foster creative thinking and problem-solving development, by enlisting skills like idea generation, finding more than one solution to a problem, and taking risks. Collaborating on a project with peers (such as envisioning and building a group art installation) develops social skills, builds teamwork ability, and allows them to see strengths in others.
Healthy Expression Creative expression can serve as a personality adjustment, give a person a better understanding of the world around them, and promote a healthier overall outlook on life. Johns Hopkins researchers found that arts education can help rewire the brain in positive ways. In the same turn, creative camps give children the means to express feelings or work out thoughts they otherwise might not know how to articulate, and can also help them make new cognitive connections.
Academic Improvement
have been proven in multiple studies to not only help kids stay in school, but improve academic achievement across the board. Creating changes to the learning environment to one of discovery for children who are tired of numbers and facts.
Self Worth Art-oriented camps build a sense of self by letting individuals freely push boundaries. Because there are virtually no rules in creative expression, there is little room for failure or negative comparison. Creating develops a strong sense of self-worth and pride in accomplishment. Understanding each individual has his or her own unique view gives children the confidence to take risks and try new ideas – not just in art, but in other areas of life. The Sioux Empire is fortunate to have a number of wonderful businesses and organizations that offer great creative opportunities over the summer. Check them out! Your children will thank you. n

Self Defense Training
child
by Tiger Rock Martial Arts
15
Self-defense training can benefit people in a number of ways. At first glance, it’s easy to say the primary benefit is to help you win a fight – in the event you’re threatened with physical harm. Some practitioners believe they’re making an investment in their health, much like any exercise. However, not all exercises are created equally. While training in a self-defense system such as Karate, Taekwondo and Jujitsu, you’re training with more of a purpose. You’re learning skill sets that will help you succeed on and off the mat, allowing you to live a more balanced life. True practitioners of martial arts take a more holistic approach to mastering these forms of self-defense. Training in self-defense builds character for students and teaches discipline. For example, a black belt may know they could win a fight and in the process, cause a person serious physical harm. One of the main tenets of self-defense training is to use violence only as a last resort. This is continually stressed in any martial arts training. Another nice thing about self-defense training is you can keep doing whatever you have been doing for your fitness and simply add this to your routine. Most schools have a diverse schedule with some early and late times, making it easy to fit self-defense training in to your already busy schedule. Self-defense training is one of the best crosstraining programs for athletes of all ages. The bilateral training balances out the imbalances created in the body by most team sports, which is especially good for kids. By balancing out the strength on both sides of the body, this type of training can help prevent injuries.
From 3 – 6 years of age the most rapid growth in the brain takes place in part of the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain functions to plan and organize new actions and maintain attention to tasks. Benefits of martial arts training for 3 – 6 year olds include: Social and emotional intelligence Development of basic muscle groups Cardiovascular endurance Development of proprioception Following directions Counting Left and right side development Understanding Consequences Building a “can do” attitude Controlling emotions Embracing competition Facing fears Meeting new people Developing a sense of independence If nothing else, when considering a class like this for yourself or your child, you’ll be building confidence in yourself and the experience of trying something new. n

Summer Activities Can Lead to Summer Injuries
During the busy summer months, we try to squeeze in as much fun as possible. Especially outside fun, such as hiking, biking and camping! This can be a lot more activity than we are used to, after hibernating during the South Dakota winters. While it is great to get out and be active, remembering to pace ourselves and stretch and stay hydrated is very important too. Skill Development Here are some red flags that will help you know when you have over done it and need to take a water break, stretch more or call your chiropractor and make an appointment.
Signs of dehydration: • G etting light headed, a headache or dizzy when out in the hot sun • Skin staying flushed and bright red even while drinking water • Not urinating for more than 2-3 hours
When you need to stretch more: • I f you’re planning on exercising significantly more than you normally do • If you have recently worked out and have sore muscles • If you get muscle cramps easily (also… eat a banana before you begin!)
Time to call your chiropractor: • I f you have over-done it and the pain is more than a normal ache
16 March 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
• I f you’re experiencing shooting pains down your legs or arms • If you’ve fallen and have pain even after your bruise has gone away • If you notice your normal range of motion or flexibility is reduced • If you’re experiencing headaches and don’t normally suffer from them • If you’re having muscle aches longer than 5 days after your activity When exercising, a good way to determine how much time you should spend stretching, is to calculate 10% of your total activity time, and warm up and cool down for that amount of time. For example, if you’re planning on hiking for an hour, you should stretch and warm up for six minutes and cool down and stretch for an additional six minutes. This will really help you stay loose and help to prevent injuries. But if an injury does occur, don’t wait too long before seeking help, from your local, friendly chiropractor. n

2. D on’t go alone. Children will explore outside their comfort zone, and likely yours, when they have a friend to share the adventure with.
3. G o slow. Hike the trails at the children’s pace or, better yet, set up base camp on a comfy log in the sun and let the children search for bugs, climb trees and build stick forts.
4. B ring Snacks. Healthy, delicious snacks and plenty of water will maintain energy levels to keep your adventure going and are effective solutions to the first round of “Can we go home yet?” chants.
5. G ear up. Rubber boots with a formed fit and lightweight rain gear have proven the most useful. Water, briars and burrs are kept out, mostly.

6. Tell Stories. Talk about your own adventures in nature. If you don’t have any, tell stories about someone you know. If you’re still drawing a blank, make one up or simply wonder aloud with your children, “I wonder what creature made that sound?”. Stories ignite the imagination, which is the essential requirement for enjoying creation.
Where to go near Sioux Falls? Newton Hills State Park (30 min), Good Earth State Park (15 min), Palisades State Park (30 min) and Beaver Creek Nature Area (20 min) are our favorites.
The hardest part? Overcoming our fears: fear of being dirty, fear of being uncomfortable, fear of being hurt, fear of being lost, fear of the unknown. Why? “Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grassstained sleeves to the heart. If we’re going to save environmentalism and the environment, we must also save an endangered indicator species: the child in nature.” (Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder). n

Saving on Summer Camp Supplies The season for summer camps is quickly approaching! Whether your child is attending a sleepaway camp or a day camp, the cost adds up quickly. This is especially true for those with multiple children attending camps. There are several ways to find the necessary supplies while still maintaining a budget: • B orrow camping supplies from close friends and family. This is one of the best ways to avoid purchasing things if you’re only going to need them for a short time. Many people have these items packed away and out of use for most of the year and would be happy to loan them to you. • A lways keep an eye out online for printable coupons for toiletries and many of the popular sunscreens and bug repellants. • I f you have multiple kids who will be attending camp this year, buy your toiletries in bulk. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, chapstick, face wash and shampoo are usually cheaper when several are purchased at once. Even better, if you can go in together with other parents to buy in bulk, you’ll save even more.

March 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
• I f your kids are in need of swimwear, rain gear, or any special clothing for camp, first check the local consignment stores. These stores are often forgotten when buying new clothes, yet these are stores where you can find some of the best deals! You could also spend a week or two checking out online resources and garage sales to see what you can find. • S tick to the number suggestions on the packing or supply lists. Make a point to not buy more than what is needed or add anything to the list when you are shopping. • S ave and reuse items for multiple years. Designate specific supplies as “for camp use only.” Put them away in a storage bin you can quickly gather up each year. This way you will not be searching all over the house for your child’s favorite flashlight! n

Healthy Snacks for On-the-Go Moms The modern mother is constantly on the go, which can make staying healthy a challenge when hunger strikes. By having snacks prepared and available at a moment’s notice, it’ll be much easier to keep you and your family full and healthy. As a dietitian and a mother of two, I know how hard it can be when you are pregnant or breastfeeding a new baby, while also taking care of the home and other children. Each mom has different nutritional needs depending on her situation. For example, an expecting mother benefits from adding calories and more protein into her diet to aid baby’s growth and mom’s blood supply; whereas, a breastfeeding mom needs more protein, increased fluids and an additional 500-600 calories daily to meet the requirements for her milk supply.
No matter your family size, all snacks should provide some nutritional benefit with minimal added sugar. Here are some delicious snack options the whole family can enjoy. Each contains protein, fiber, and carbohydrates and can be assembled ahead of time.
Though it can be hard to add time into an already busy day, preparing snacks can really help the day go smoother, especially when surrounded by kids. Find a time that works best for your schedule and prepare a variety of snack options. Store them in the refrigerator, a drawer at work, or throw them in a diaper bag, breast pump bag, or purse when you are headed out the door.

Planning an Active Summer Without Overdoing it
Summer is just around the corner, and with warm weather, long days and school ending, the kids are excited! They’re ready for a break from the classroom, but parents want to make sure kids don’t spend the whole vacation on the couch or in front of screens. How can parents plan a summer that’s restful, fun and healthy? First, decide what your priorities are for your child’s summer vacation. Do they need more physical activity? Some additional academic support so that they hit the ground running in the fall? Do you want to spend the summer doing things as a family? When you know what you want your summer to look like, choosing how to fill the time is much easier. Next, talk to your child and get an idea of their interests. Is there a sport they want to participate in? A camp they want to attend? If your child gives input into their summer activities, they’ll be more invested because it was their decision to participate. They’ll also enjoy participating in activities that meet their current interests.
58 |March March 2018| thehoodmagazine.com | thehoodmagazine.com 2018
Third, determine your family’s budget for summer activities. Some sports, summer camps and other activities have scholarship options for low-income families. Finally, remember balance. While it may be tempting to let go of structure for a while, kids need boundaries. At the same time, planning every waking moment with activities can be overwhelming – both for you and for your child. Choose a few activities to stimulate your child and help them continue to grow as a person, but remember to also rest. Depending on the time commitment required, two to three ongoing activities can fill your child’s days, offer structure and stimulate them while leaving time for playdates and relaxation. n

How Farmers Go Green
He may not be Irish, but that doesn’t stop local farmer, Jeff Thompson, from going green on his farm for Saint Patrick’s Day – or every day of the year. Sustainability is something that’s important to the future of his family farm and many others in South Dakota. “I farm some of the same land my grandfather purchased in 1877,” said Thompson. Thanks to advancements in research and technology, Jeff grows more food using less crop inputs than his grandparents. Growing food sustainably means someday he can pass the family business to his nephew.
Going Green on the Farm What are some of the ways Jeff goes green? One of the basic practices is rotating corn and soybean crops to make sure the plants don’t deplete the soil of important nutrients. This is like what many gardeners do to keep their seedbeds healthy and productive. He also enriches the soil with manure from a nearby dairy. Soil sampling is another important part of his sustainability plans. He uses the information to create digital maps of his fields, uploads them into his tractor’s precision technology system, and then applies just the
right amount of fertilizer needed to grow his crops. Similar technology in his planter and sprayer ensure he doesn’t waste seed or overspray. “Today’s farming technology helps me use just the right amount of seed and crop inputs to reduce waste,” said Thompson. Like most farmers in South Dakota, Thompson plants seeds developed through biotechnology that are resistant to the pesticides he sprays. This way he kills the weeds while the seeds flourish. GMO seeds also require less water, meaning they can tolerate dry weather to reduce or eliminate irrigation.
Doing More with Less Conservation tillage helps Thompson protect his most valuable resource: the soil. Too much tillage can lead to soil erosion, so he skips it in the fall and just plants a new crop in the spring. Less tillage helps him keep more soil in his fields and fuel in his tank.
He’s not alone. Today, 63 percent of U.S. farmers practice conservation tillage, up from 36 percent 20 years ago. According to a report released by Field to Market, the Keystone Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, farmers have also reduced soil erosion over the past 30 years by 47 to 67 percent, and greenhouse gas emissions by 15 to 42 percent depending on the type of crop grown. Thompson has also reduced his liquid petroleum usage by upgrading his corn dryer to an energy-efficient version. He uses the dryer in the fall to reduce moisture in his corn before storing or selling it. Since building it two years ago, he has cut his liquid petroleum use in half. Meal Planning Do I Have To?
Short answer? YES. I know, I know, I know. It’s hard to fit it into your to do list, but I promise you, the time you spend meal planning will pay you dividends back for staying healthy, weight loss, saving money and keeping your sanity. Hear it from me, this type-b, unorganized, chaos coordinator, mom of four, these are my tips and shortcuts keep my head above water. Get your family involved! We decide what we’re going to eat by making a weekly menu and the kids are involved. I have a rotating list of about 20 different dinners, with seasonal dinners depending on summer and winter. I have four kids and everyone gets to pick out their meal of choice for the week. These are simple dinners like: tacos, chicken fajitas, bbq pork, turkey chili, etc. All of my family meals are fairly healthy and can easily be made gluten free. Then we fill in blanks for breakfast and lunch and even plan a take-out meal if we want. So now you have planned your menu, the next step is sticking to it and making the food! Staples for my menu planning are: chicken breasts, ground turkey/ beef meatballs, taco meat and shredded pork. SUPER EASY! You can prepare any of these proteins a number of different ways, and transform them into meals later that week. You don’t need a lot of kitchen to do this! This is how I prepare: boil the chicken on the stove and pre-cook the taco meet, bake the meatballs in the oven and cook the pork in the crock-pot. With these four different proteins, I have
62 |
March 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
endless options for meals all week. So in one Sunday afternoon, I spend a couple of hours pre-cooking the protein and I save myself at least seven hours during the week. The best part is, my family eats healthy, I am not scrounging at 5:30 p.m. with no plan that ends up in an unhealthy drive-thru, as well as saving money. LOG AND WEIGH YOUR FOOD. Can I tell you
how much I rolled my eyes about this, until I started doing it? It changed my life and I lost an extra 10 pounds by eating the exact same foods on the same meal plan. Why? Because my idea of 28 ounces of almonds was very different than an actual 28 ounces of almonds! Even if you aren’t following a weight loss meal plan, but want to trim up and/or eat healthier, try those few suggestions: meal plan with your family, follow through by sticking to the menu, log and weigh your food. These are small steps to a healthier family and you! Good luck! n

1. How has training been going? Training is going great! I never thought I would say this before starting this journey, but I look forward to my workouts everyday. It is a time that I can just put all my worries to rest and concentrate on bettering myself. I feared what the workouts would be like before I started, that I would dread going, but it is the complete opposite.
2. What have you enjoyed the most? I have enjoyed it all, but if I had to pick one thing, it would be the personal training sessions. I enjoy the challenge my personal trainers give me each time. They give me that extra push I need to perform at my best. Not only are the workouts great, I also enjoy getting to know them and gaining knowledge through our conversations.
4. What have you learned so far? I have learned so many different things so far at KoKo FitClub. I learned many different exercises that work muscles I didn’t even know existed! Pace and form are something I didn’t think were important, but I’ve learned they’re the two of the most important things during my exercises. Not only learning about the exercises, but my food intake. There are the obvious foods that you want to limit, but as I really started looking into the nutritional information I was shocked to find out that foods that I thought were healthy choices really were not. I have stared to track my food, which has helped tremendously.
3. What has been the biggest challenge? The biggest challenge for me so far is accepting that everything is not a quick fix. Going into this my mindset is- if it does not happen quickly then it is not working. Was I totally wrong! I have learned you need to be patient, consistent and dedicated in order to see results. In the past, if I didn’t see results quickly I would just give up. That is probably why diets and exercise programs in the past have not worked for me.
5. How are you pushing yourself on this journey? I am a people pleaser. I want to show everyone they picked the right person. I don’t want to let them down. Of course my family definitely keeps me going. I want to get healthy for my kids. I want to show them why it is important to make good choices in our health. n

Little Tot Training Seats If you’re a parent who has ever had to go through potty training your child, you know how challenging it can be. Here are some tips to help make the process a little easier and maybe even effortless! First of all, you’ll want to determine which type of training seat you want to use. There are many different options on the market made specifically for boys or girls. You’ll also want to determine how portable you need your seat to be. If your child is the only one using the toilet, you might consider a semi-permanent training seat like the Bemis Nextstep Potty Seat. The Bemis seat comes with design features that allow the seat to be easily removed for cleaning, or to remove the smaller seat when it’s no longer needed. It’s a two-in-one toilet seat and it accommodates adult and child users equally.
When not in use, the potty seat automatically secures by magnet into the molded seat cover, meaning adults won’t have to manually lift the child seat. When it’s time for little ones to use it, toddlers can easily pull it down by themselves. This will help with their independence and reinforce their “I can do it myself” sense of confidence. If you’re a parent who wants to keep your bathroom clean and clutter-free, this is the toilet seat for your family. No matter which seat you choose for your child, just remember to be patient. Potty training can take time, however with the right tools, you’ll be set up for success. n

How to Get the Most out of Your Refrigerator Did you know that some simple organization of your refrigerator can reduce the amount of food waste and cut down the risk of foodborne illness? It’s very common in these busy days to rush in putting away our purchases so we can move on to the next item on our agenda. Did you know refrigerator organization can save you time and money? 68 |
March 2018 | thehoodmagazine.com
Remember from your youth science classes, hot air rises? This same principle exists in refrigeration. Upper shelves and door bins tend to be warmer than the midline and lower shelves and deli compartments. The storage drawers identified as crispers often offer adjustments that control the different levels of humidity in them, which will prolong the life of your fresh produce and stretch your dollar. Each manufacturer will explore opportunities and options testing the performance of the refrigeration in environmentally controlled elements. They will test the refrigerator under higher than normal ambient air temperatures, often exceeding 100 degrees, to be certain the refrigerator performs. French door refrigeration is the most common purchase today and finds the refrigeration compartments on the upper levels with the freezer drawers or doors directly under the crisper drawers or deli drawers. This location directly above the freezer offers better cooling and adjustments to accommodate a wide range of foods. You can have flexibility in keeping hors d’oeuvres at a warmer temp and being able to store items like bacon, cheeses, hot dogs and brats and a variety of deli meats at cooler temps.
The crisper area allows for flexibility in humidity control. High humidity is best for all of your leafy vegetables and low humidity for most of your fruits plus some vegetables-like peppers and cucumbers. Extend the life and reduce the amounts of items that get tossed by learning how humidity affects your choices of fruits and veggies. Here is a list to help you identify how to maximize the shelf life of your food: High Humidity Drawer

Your refrigerator has zones with different characteristics. Manufacturers have developed these zones to maximize the perfect climate for your different food item needs. Using these zones correctly can increase the length of time that your food stays fresh.
69
Low Humidity Drawer
* Apples * Mushrooms * Peppers * Peaches/Pears/ Plums
Use the lowest shelf of the refrigerator above the crispers to be your workhorse as this area is the coldest in the refrigerator compartment. This area is best for storing those items that have the propensity to develop harmful bacteria. These would be items such as raw meats and fish (be sure they are on trays or plates to catch any drippings). The upper shelf is that catch-all shelf and is a place to put items like preserves, jams and jellies, yogurt, left overs in small containers and peanut butter or snacks. Take a few minutes today to sort out your refrigerator and the time you invest will pay off in the savings of money, food and time. n

Benefits of
Adjustable Bases for Sleeping Finding a great mattress can do wonders for those who have sleeping issues, however, a mattress alone cannot alleviate all situations that lead to unrest. Problems commonly associated with individuals who sleep flat include: difficulty breathing, swelling, back pain and a whole host of other aches. The ability to raise one’s upper and lower body truly offers a solution to these otherwise troublesome pains. The first step in getting an adjustable base (also known as a power foundation) is to understand how they work. Your mattress sits directly on top of the adjustable base. Instead of having a box spring and frame, you have the base – it provides all the necessary support to ensure the integrity of the mattress. If you already have a bed set with a headboard and footboard, there are most likely wooden slats that go from side-to-side. These can simply be removed and the legs of the adjustable base sit right on the floor. King-sized mattresses most commonly come with two adjustable bases pushed next to each other, just like how two twin extra-long box springs are commonly used. This is due to the fact that a king-sized adjustable base would be rather heavy and difficult to move within a home. The two bases allow for both sides to have their own independent movement, especially if the individual decides to have two separate twin-long
mattresses to make up their king. Otherwise, for those who wish to keep the king-size as one, it’s common to have the adjustable bases synced together so they move at the same time, offering the same positions to both partners. Raising the upper part of the body immediately relieves pressure from one’s chest. This action can help open your airway, making breathing easier. This can lead to less snoring as well as reducing sleep apnea and asthma. Raising the lower half of the body can help reduce swelling in one’s legs by promoting movement of fluids, rather than them pooling and causing swelling and inflammation. The number one force that causes pain in individuals throughout the day and night is gravity. Look for a base that offers a zero-gravity setting. This setting raises both the upper body and lower body to the optimal angles to promote the best blood flow and pressure relief. n
