Summer Camp and the Anxious Child
As a parent or caregiver, you can imagine and almost capture the summer bliss that your child might experience at summer camp. Smokey campfires crackling and blazing. Splashing and squealing in murky lakes or pools. But then you realize your elementary aged child often experiences anxiety, especially overnight without you. How to sell them!

Torticollis Warning Signs and Treatment Infant torticollis diagnoses are on the rise and early detection is critical for effective treatment. Torticollis is any abnormal posture of the head and/or neck caused by neck tightness and weakness that often can develop during pregnancy. The first sign of torticollis that parents usually notice is that their baby prefers to look to one side. In addition, a head tilt (ear to shoulder) may also be observed. These may be very subtle and usually require the skills of a pediatric physical therapy to determine if your baby has torticollis.

March 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com
Celebrating 25 Years! The earlier the treatment for torticollis is initiated, the quicker it may be resolved. If the physical therapist determines that your baby has torticollis, he/she may recommend treatment and will educate you on various exercises, stretches, and repositioning techniques. A family’s active involvement in consistently completing the homes exercise program prescribed by the physical therapy is a key component to the resolution of torticollis. In the meantime, there are things you can do before you schedule your appointment:

a baby is required to remain upright after eating or during sleep due to such things as reflux, all positioning devices should be limited because of their tendency to promote poor posturing of the head and neck and decreasing the child’s ability move their head in all directions. This can result in worsening of any neck muscle tightness that may be present, as well as significant head shape changes. Time spent playing on the floor is the best position for your baby to move through his or her full motion and promote developmental strengthening, as well as explore and interact with their environment. If you feel your child may have torticollis, seek out a physical therapist that specializes in pediatrics, and in particular, torticollis evaluation and treatment. It is important that they are assessed, as every child presents differently and will have a unique treatment plan that includes stretching, but also strengthening exercises to the opposite side. Again, early identification is essential to resolving neck tightness and weakness, allowing your baby to move, discover, and explore his or her environment for optimal development! n

Baby Wearing
Makes Summer Fun Possible! Most families plan activities through the summer months. Whether those activities take your family far away or keep you close to home, here are just a few reasons why wearing a child will make your activities more enjoyable for the entire family! 1. Keep those hands handy! We all know crowds will gather at many places your family travels to this summer. Having an extra set of
hands to hold on to your toddler, carry a diaper bag or push a child on a swing can mean extra happiness for all family members!
2. Take a walk through nature! Having young children doesn’t have to mean you’re homebound for the next five years. Baby carriers are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes. Make sure you get a comfortable fit for all of the fun this summer will hold!
3. Traveling made easy! Whether traveling by plane, train or bus, using a baby carrier will get you through the crowded spaces of public transportation. Public transportation can be stressful for families traveling with young children. Keeping your little ones close to their caregivers will put both of you at ease!
10 |
March 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com
4. P rovide the nourishment they need, when they need it! Baby
baby
carriers will allow you to feed your child, whether by breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, in whatever fun situation you find your family in this summer.
5. Keep everyone happy! Research
11
has proven babies who are in a carrier cry less and are more content. Summer memories will be much more enjoyable when the young children in your family are happy.
6. Make naptime easier! When babies are worn they are more in tune with their caregiver’s rhythms and movements. Nap times are a breeze when babies are able to feel close to those they love and trust.
7. Don’t get too over stimulated! Worn babies will quickly realize they are safe in the comforts of their caregiver’s baby carrier. Toddlers can quickly become over stimulated and a ride in a baby carrier can help to calm everyone’s nerves after a melt down. n

Adding Physical Activity into your Child’s Routine
13
Winter is nearing an end, a time when we all have been cooped up indoors for months. But warmer days are ahead, and with them, simpler ways to stay physically active. Physical activity is an important part of a child’s daily routine. It helps keep a child healthy, physically and emotionally. Often, parents believe children get plenty of physical activity through their daily play, but unfortunately this is inaccurate. In fact, a lack of daily physical activity is contributing to childhood obesity, which can lead to childhood health risks and even adult obesity.
Children see. Children do. Parents are a child’s biggest role models, and this can have great benefits or significant consequences, depending on the parents’ choices. The best way to ensure a child is getting enough physical activity is for parents to model these behaviors. When parents eat healthy and stay physically active and instill these behaviors in their children, life-long habits are developed for their betterment.
Get physical. Have fun. Everyone could benefit from more physical activity,
especially during the end of winter and early spring months. Adding physical activity into our already busy routine can be overwhelming. A good place to start is with short bursts of five to 10 minutes of activity. Get your children involved and pick an activity. This could be dancing to a favorite song for a few minutes, doing a few stretches before bed or limiting screen time by setting a timer after 15 minutes and requiring everyone to take a movement break. Other quick ways to add movement into the day include: • Reaching high five times after brushing teeth • Running in place during commercials • Exchanging morning cartoons for a walk As parents join in on the activity, the fun only multiplies — children will have a more positive experience, increasing their desire to participate in physical activity daily. n

How Martial Arts Training Is Helping To
Build Better Athletes
Physical development and training is important for kids of all ages, especially those who participate in sports. Unfortunately, many of today’s sports programs do not include the type of training to truly maximize their safety and potential. In fact, research shows that many sports programs tend to lack key amounts of variety, balance and cognitive development. With the inclusion of martial arts training, all of that is beginning to change. Many experts are identifying martial arts as an ideal training program to build better athletes. Dr. Nicholas DiNubile, author of the book ‘Frame Work,’ which identifies the seven steps for optimal health, says “Martial Arts is closest to being the perfect activity.” He goes on to explain that participation in martial arts can help athletes of all ages experience greater success in all sports, while minimizing injury, psychological stress and burnout. This is because training programs use a variety of drills, techniques and experiences to help develop

bilateral strength and coordination throughout the entire body. Additionally, martial arts training programs also provide exercises to help students develop focus, confidence and resilience. Incorporating variety, balance and cognitive development into physical training for kids is a great way to promote athletic development and prevent future injuries. n

While camp is close to home in the heart of Sioux Falls, it feels like a world away. Although our facilities and location are terrific, we know that it’s our counselors that ultimately make the camp.

2017 Family Gets Fit UPDATE
Last month we introduced you to our Family Gets Fit winners, Heather and Landon Benson. They’re a mother-son team and they’re having great success with their lifestyle change provided by ‘Hood Magazine and Koko FitClub Sioux Falls! Landon is doing great with his workouts. He’s lost 12 pounds and his coworkers and friends are really noticing how lean and muscular he’s looking. Heather loves every day at Koko. She’s lost 16 pounds, which puts her just over halfway to her 30-pound weightloss goal. She’s feeling way more energy and more confidence, too. They both got their orange medallion for completing their workout goals for last month. They love the meal plan and are finding lots of new healthy favorites!
How are you feeling about your progress so far? Heather: I’m feeling good about my progress so far. I’m realizing that this is a marathon, not a sprint. I want to make changes that are sustainable, that I can incorporate long term for myself and for my family.
Landon: So far, I’m feeling pretty darn good! Seeing the changes in how far I can push myself is beyond exciting and I know it’s just going to keep getting better!
What has been the biggest challenge? Heather: The biggest challenge for me has been learning how to get back on track after hitting a bump. Anytime you’re trying to make positive changes, life tends to throw you a curve ball. Questions come up such as, “How can I get through cravings?” or “How do I return to training after an illness?” Luckily, Koko has been there to support me and answer my questions along the way.

results. At Koko, they have a machine called the FitCheck that calculates an “eBMI”. It’s a more complete picture than the traditional BMI chart. When I first started, I was losing a lot of weight, but my eBMI wasn’t budging. (I’ve learned that women tend to lose some muscle mass before they start losing fat. It’s just the way our bodies are programmed.) As I kept at it, my weight loss plateaued a bit, but my muscle mass increased and my eBMI started to drop. That’s when people really started saying they could see a positive change!
discovered that my suit was suddenly too big! That was a good problem to have!
What have you thought about your experience so far? Heather: So far, this has been an amazing experience! Koko really is such a supportive, encouraging environment. I’ve ran into old friends who I had no idea were training there, and I’ve made new friends there, too. It’s really inspiring when other Koko members tell me their success stories!

Budgeting for Summer Camp
Summer camp season is just around the corner! Camp can be a highly enriching experience for a child, providing many priceless memories and lifelong friendships. As with most summer activities, the effect these camps have on your wallet can easily throw you for a loop if you’re not prepared. Whether you’re shopping for supplies or paying camp fees, preparing yourself with a camp budget is going to be essential. •W hen it comes to supplies, begin with a list of what your child will need and want during their time at camp. You’ll want to first search your home for anything on that list you already have. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone out to purchase batteries for a flashlight only to find a full pack in a closet later on. My second go-to for supplies is borrowing from friends! Many people have camp gear sitting unused throughout much of the year, and they would be happy to loan it to you.

March 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com
•W hen it comes to finding special clothing for camp, buying used just may be your best option. Check local consignment stores and thrift shops for items such as swimsuits, rain gear, or hiking boots. You could also check local garage sale sites for these items.
• If you have multiple children who will be attending camps this year, buy toiletries in bulk. Better yet, if you have friends who will also
have their children attending camp this year, go in with them on purchasing these things in bulk.
•A lways be on the lookout for available discounts. You might be able to save by booking early, by signing up siblings, or if you or your spouse are a teacher, military personnel, or a public safety officer you may qualify for additional discounts. There might also be discounts available to parents willing to volunteer. There are also camps that offer scholarships and grants. Another thing to consider is the cost of summer camp may qualify you for a tax credit. Contact a tax professional to see if you can qualify for this. • I f you’re worried about overspending,
you could look into day camps, half-day camps, or look into booking a shorter summer session. It also doesn’t hurt to ask if one camp will “price match” another similar camp for you.
• C arefully label everything you send to camp with your child. Preventing items from getting lost means you won’t have to repurchase the following year. n

Summer Activities
can Lead to Summer Injuries During the busy summer months, we try to squeeze in as much fun as possible. Especially outside fun, such as hiking, biking and camping to soak up the sun! This can be a lot more activity than we are used to, after hibernating during the South Dakota winters. While it’s great to get out and be active, remembering to pace yourself, stretch and stay hydrated is very important too.
Here are some “red flags” for when you may have over done it and need to take a water break, stretch more or call your chiropractor and make an appointment.
• G etting light headed, a headache or dizzy when out in the hot sun • S kin staying flushed and bright red even while drinking water • Not urinating for more than 2-3 hours
When you need to stretch more: • I f you’re planning on exercising significantly more than you normally do • I f you have recently worked out and have sore muscles • I f you get muscle cramps easily, try a banana before you start!
Time to call your chiropractor: • I f you have over-done it and the pain is more than a normal ache
family
Signs of dehydration:
• I f you’re experiencing shooting pains down your legs or arms • If you have fallen and have pain even after your bruise has gone away • If you notice your normal range of motion or flexibility is reduced • If you are experiencing headaches and don’t normally suffer from them • If you are having muscle aches longer than 5 days after your activity
55
When exercising, a good way to determine how much time you should spend stretching, is to calculate 10% of your total activity time, and warm up and cool down for the same amount of time. For example, if you’re planning on hiking for 1 hour (60 minutes) you should stretch and warm up for six minutes and cool down and stretch for an additional six minutes. This will really help you stay loose and help prevent injuries. If an injury does occur, don’t wait too long before seeking help from an expert. n

Protecting Your Child’s Eyes While They Enjoy Summer Activities When your children spend more time outdoors it’s time to ensure they are getting proper UV protection, not just for their skin – but also for their eyes. Children are even more vulnerable to UV-related harm than adults because the lenses in their eyes cannot filter out UV rays as easily. It’s vital that children have proper sunglasses for all their outdoor activities. It’s important for parents to understand that proper UV protection for your child’s eyes is actually year-round! Be sure to look for UVA and UVB protection in your child’s sun wear. In addition, when your child is by the water, swim goggles can provide UV protection and can also be made in your child’s prescription. Did you know, as your child is busy enjoying summer activities, clues are provided to identify hidden vision problems? For example, problems catching or hitting balls, difficulty shooting baskets, clumsiness with physical activities, avoiding reading and having trouble seeing 3D movies are all clues your child may have a vision problem. Look for some of the following signs related to visual problems and sports: • Difficulty seeing, hitting or catching the ball • D ifficulty knowing where the ball or other players are at all times
58 |
March 2017 | thehoodmagazine.com
• Over or under-estimating the distance of the ball, players or boundaries • Difficulty with ball sports • Not much improvement with practice When the doctor says your child’s eyes are fine or she can see “20/20”, this means she is able to see a certain size letter at a distance of 20 feet - but that’s all it means! Vision is a complex process that involves over 20 visual skills and more than 65 percent of all the pathways to the brain. Any of the above symptoms are a sign a vision problem may be at the root of your child’s difficulties. The good news is, once the vision problem is detected, it’s usually 100% correctable. If the vision problem can be treated over the summer, your child could start the new school year ready to succeed – schedule a developmental vision evaluation today! n

IS ORGANIC WORTH MY MONEY? It’s the moment of truth in the grocery store. You’re trying to decide between organic or non-organic. The organic strawberries and chicken cost a couple dollars more, but you’ve heard that organic foods are better for you. Is it worth the extra money? It’s important to understand what the term organic really means. Organic refers to how a product is grown, not its nutritional value. While farming techniques might vary, there’s no nutritional difference between organic and non-organic foods. Another thing to keep in mind is organic doesn’t necessarily equal local. If you want to buy local products, it’s important to know that “local” is not a regulated term and has no clear definition or guidelines. Organic foods don’t always come from places closer to home. You might be surprised at how little many foods in the grocery store travel to get to you, organic or not. Milk is a great example of that. The USDA regulates the use of the organic label and outlines specific requirements farmers must meet in order to be certified as organic. Many conventional farmers also use these practices, but the big difference with organic comes from what you can’t do. Here’s the rundown on the main points of certified organic farming: 1. Preserving natural resources and biodiversity Organic farmers add compost, animal
61
manure and green manure to give the soil nutrients from natural sources in place of synthetic fertilizers. Soil conservation is also part of organic farming standards. 2. Supporting animal health and welfare Organic farmers try to prevent disease with a healthy diet, a low-stress environment and plenty of exercise to build up strong immune systems in their animals. They may also use certain approved vaccinations and other preventative measures to try to prevent illness. 3. Providing animals access to the outdoors Livestock on organic farms must have access to the outdoors, including shade shelter, clean drinking water and direct sunlight. Grazing animals, like cattle, sheep and goats, need to have access to pasture during the grazing season. 4. Using only approved materials To be certified organic, farmers may not use most synthetic fertilizers for soil nutrition, or pesticides for controlling insects, weeds or diseases. Some approved products may be used, but many rely on the PAMS method: prevention, avoidance, monitoring and suppression. 5. No genetically modified ingredients Organic farms may not plant GMO crops, and livestock may not have any feed that includes GM ingredients.
Are GMO’s something you should be worried about? You can get all the facts here. 6. Receiving annual on-site inspections The application process for becoming certified organic is extensive. In fact, land must be in organic production for three years before it can be certified. USDA inspectors visit the farm each year for recertification. 7. Separating organic food from non-organic food Organic crops can’t come in contact with unapproved substances, and the seeds and foods of organic and nonorganic must not mix. All equipment used for non-organic products must be thoroughly washed each time before it’s used for organic products. Continued on page 63

IS ORGANIC WORTH MY MONEY?(CONT.) If organic farming practices are something you feel strongly about, then you’re probably comfortable paying more for organic foods. But if your decision is based on nutritional value and safety, there’s no need to pay extra. According to dietitian and local farmer Charlotte Rommereim, RDN LN LD, “Both organic and conventionally raised foods adhere to standards from the USDA to ensure their safety. Studies show little to no difference in the nutritional content between organic and conventionally raised foods.” When it comes to making healthier
choices, “The goal for a healthy diet pattern is to increase the fruits and vegetables you consume,” said Charlotte. “The health benefits from adding fruits and vegetables to your diet outweigh any difference in the methods by which they were raised, and studies show it is negligible at best. So, increase fruit and vegetable consumption with what you can afford and know that the foods are safe and nutritious whether you buy organic or non-organic.”
you can feel confident it’s safe for you and your family. Visit hungryfortruthsd.com for more information and to ask a farmer a question. Mattress Giveaway
We recently had the opportunity to partner with Juna Sleep Systems for a mattress giveaway! We had an overwhelming response from the community and we’re excited for you to meet the families who were chosen by our ‘Hood panel and Juna Sleep Systems. Jeremy and Melissa Churchill live in Sioux Falls with their four children. The Churchill family has had their share of challenges over the past few years. Losing their almost twoyear-old son in 2013 took an emotional toll on their family. “We lost another son in July of 2015 and had an ectopic pregnancy in February of 2016,” said Melissa Churchill.

Mattress Giveaway Zach and Kelli Else have been married for 10 years and have two children. Kelli is thankful for her husband who works hard to provide for her family. “He works long hours out in the cold as an electrician and has always provided for our family,” said Kelli. “He worked multiple jobs to put me through college so I could be an accountant. We have been paying on my student loans for eight years and still have two more years to go. With our student loan payments, having two boys and all of our other monthly bills, we have no extra money for a good quality Juna mattress.” The Else family is thankful for a new mattress that will help bring them some quality sleep.

For the Evenson family of southern Minnesota, a new mattress will bring much needed rest after their daughter Rosie was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms cancer. The Evenson’s live in Southern Minnesota and travel to Sioux Falls for their daughter’s medical care.

“Aaron and I didn’t sleep for about a month after the diagnosis and we are emotionally and physically exhausted from this nightmarish journey,” said Angie. “We are truly, truly grateful to have been selected to receive a mattress from Juna. It will certainly be an upgrade from our 20-yr-old hand-me-down mattress.” Since September, the Evenson family has spent more time in Sioux Falls than in their hometown of Blue Earth, MN. Since Angie is originally from Mitchell, SD, Sioux Falls has easily become a second home to their family. Rosie is scheduled to complete treatment in June. n

Time to “Spring Forward”
“Spring forward,” March 12, 2017. We make the bi-annual trip to the clocks in our homes and businesses to change the time, moving life one hour ahead, and adjusting our sleep by one hour less. The effects on the family can be many. It’s also a good time to look at basic home safety measures to keep your family safe. Here is an easy to-do list you can follow to save time, money and energy.
Change the batteries in the clock. While you already have to change the time setting, it’s the perfect time to change the battery on the clock.
Change the batteries in the smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors. Life safety concerns should never be compromised. Replacing batteries on all your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors will ensure the safety of your family.
Take care of the discarded batteries. Make sure old batteries are not just tossed in the garbage, as it can make contact with other items in your trash. Incidentally, this can create an electrical charge, which is known to start fires. Protect the positive end by covering with cardboard and a piece of tape, so it cannot make contact with other metals.
Check your dryer vent. Unhook and look at your dryer vent and clean any lint particles out of it. Lint travels through the dryer, collects in the line and reduces airflow, which reduces the efficiency of your dryer. This can cost you more in

life and keep your mattress in the best condition, by flipping or rotating it. If you own a mattress that does not need flipping, we recommend you rotate it half way to lessen the daily body impressions, which will help extend the life of the mattress. Saving the lifespan of the mattress saves you by not having to replace your mattress quite as often.
Check the grease catch on your BBQ grill. People grill year round. Depending on how much you use your grill, it’s always good to check your grease catch. Check it often and be sure to replace it during the bi-annual check.
Change the filter on your high efficient furnace. Dust particles are known to build up on your furnace filter. It’s a good idea to change the filter at least twice a year. Preventive maintenance is always a good way to save money in the long run. n

Quick and Convenient: Why Consider a Touch-Free Faucet
We are all busy, running from one place to another. We’re also trying to think of ways to simplify our lives. One of the most hectic places in the home is the kitchen. You know the hustle and bustle as everyone tries to get out the door in the morning. Imagine having a touch-free faucet in your kitchen!
