welcome

Happy March! It is hard to believe we are talking about Summer Camps/Programs already! If you are thinking about getting your little ones into camps or programs this summer, you are not going to want to wait as spots are filling up quickly this year! You may notice there a few camps missing from our list this season, but don’t worry, they will be back next year! You can find a listing of our Summer 2021 camps and programs on our website at www.thehoodmagazine.com. March is all about St. Patrick’s Day and we have some craft ideas for you on our website! Make sure to check them out and be sure to use the hashtag #hoodmagazine to post pictures showing us how they turned out. Did you know March is also Colon Cancer Awareness Month? Make sure to check out our website to see how one local mom is spreading awareness about colon cancer. Another Spring preparation question: Do you have the proper helmet for your child when it comes to participating in sports or other activities? Lifescape teaches us about Traumatic Brain Injury this month and what you need to know to keep your child(ren) safe. We have a hard rule in our house when it comes to riding toys outside; helmets are required! It is important to protect those heads! Happy Spring!

3 tips for

by The Hood Magazine

Dressing Your Baby for Springtime Fun Spring is coming! Make sure you have the right clothing to greet the changing seasons. You may have spent the last few months primarily inside, but now the sun is shining and the temperatures are rising, so it’s time to bust outside. Sunshine is good for the soul and fresh air is good for mom and baby! Because we live in the Midwest, we know temperatures can vary day-to-day, so as Spring begins, use these tips for dressing your little bundle to take in some much-needed outdoor time. 1. H ats are not just for winter. Hats and babies go hand in hand all year long. While the warmer temps may allow you to pack away some of that winter gear, a lightweight, soft fleece or cotton hat is perfect for the Spring months. Babies lose 75% of their body heat through their heads, so wearing a hat outdoors is essential. What about on those really warm spring days? Well, you may not need a hat for warmth, but don’t forget the sun is powerful and you need to protect those soft fuzzy little bald heads from burning. Adding a sun hat to your baby’s Spring closet is important, too!

8|

March 2021 | thehoodmagazine.com

2. L ayers, layers, layers! Layers are our friends when it comes to dressing our little ones. Big, bulky coats may cause your baby to be too warm, not to mention they are complicated and awkward if you are trying to wear your baby in a wrap or sling. Instead, dress in light layers that you can easily remove if the weather is extra nice! 3. O nesies and sleepers are great base items! Onesies worn under a baby’s clothes not only provide an extra layer of warmth, but also keeps your baby’s back and belly from showing if their shirt lifts. If your baby is not walking age yet, consider using a footie sleeper as a bottom base. These work great because your baby’s feet and ankles are covered and you don’t have to worry about them becoming exposed. If it’s an extra chilly day, you can even layer some cozy socks or slippers over the sleeper! l

What to Do When Your Child Says

‘It wasn’t me!’

Admitting mistakes is tough. Learn how to help your child accept responsibility. Children 5-8 years of age will often push the blame to another person in order to avoid negative feelings and conflict. It is important to understand this behavior and what you can do to encourage your child’s self-responsibility. Why does my child blame? Children, like adults, do not like to be wrong or get in trouble. It is normal for your child to blame others for their mistakes. One reason for this behavior is your child yearns for a parent’s approval. Your child may believe you won’t approve if they acknowledge they made a mistake. Here are three reasons your child avoids responsibility or shifts blame to someone else: 1. S elf-preservation: Admitting a mistake is difficult. Your child may be doing it to avoid a potential consequence. It is natural to respond to these situations by protecting yourself. 2. S hame: Doing something wrong creates feelings of humiliation and guilt. It is easier to deny or blame than to admit fault. 3. E xternalization: Children feel strong emotions and do not yet have the necessary skills to process through them. Instead of accepting and managing their feelings, your child may shift them to someone else or act as though it never happened.

•H ow frequently does your child blame others? • Does it interfere with the daily functioning of those involved?

What to watch out for: It is important to observe and understand your child. When you have a good understanding of your child, you will be able to adapt to meet your child’s needs and comfort level. Ask yourself:

Remember, learning responsibility takes time and consistency. Provide opportunities to teach your child how to accept responsibility and how to learn from his or her mistakes. l

Excessively blaming others can be a sign of bullying. However, remember blaming is normal behavior for children 5-8 years of age. Keep an eye on the behavior.

Encouraging your child’s self-responsibility There are several strategies to help your child develop self-responsibility. •R espond; don’t react. Avoid arguing, confronting, and overreacting. •M ake it safe and comfortable for your child to come forward and tell the truth. •B e empathetic and validate your child’s feelings and concerns. •A llow independence in daily tasks and routines. •B e available to help problem solve and work through difficult situations. •M odel responsibility and honesty.

Keeping Kids Safe from

Brain Injuries

Plan ahead and prevent childhood injuries

Each year, millions of Americans participate in summer sports — from swimming, biking, and waterskiing to kayaking, rock climbing, and volleyball. Physical exercise is great, but these activities come with risks that can lead to serious injuries. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in children. Each year, an estimated 62,000 children ages 0-19 sustain a TBI requiring hospitalization. These injuries result from motor vehicle crashes, falls, sports injuries, physical abuse, and other causes. Each year, 564,000 children are seen in hospital emergency rooms for brain injury.

12 |

March 2021 | thehoodmagazine.com

While the majority of TBI’s are mild (90%), including concussions, each incident needs to be taken seriously, and prevention is imperative. Plan ahead to keep this summer safe for your family with these tips: •A lways wear a properly fitted helmet and replace it after a serious fall. Helmets are not

just for biking or motorcycles and should be worn while skateboarding, rollerblading, or riding an ATV or moped. •H ave fun while knowing your limitations. Be sure to use proper safety equipment for things like rock climbing and have spotters for water sports like skiing and wakeboarding. •N ever dive, even in familiar lakes and rivers. Depth can vary significantly in a small area and the “Feet first, first-time” rule can prevent a devastating brain or spinal cord injury. •A life vest is essential for any natural body of water, even on a calm day. Undercurrents are invisible and can overpower even the strongest swimmers. Make it uncool to go without a lifejacket when enjoying the water with friends. •F ollow age recommendations for driving UTVs, ATVs, etc. Supervise their use and take time to teach kids how to operate them safely before letting them go solo.

•E ducate your teens on the signs and symptoms of concussion and brain injury, as they can be subtle. As with many injuries, early treatment is essential for making the best possible recovery. Call your child’s doctor if they have had a blow to the head or if you notice the following common signs and symptoms: - Tiredness or listlessness - I rritability or crankiness (will not stop crying or cannot be consoled) -C hanges in eating (will not eat or nurse) -C hanges in sleep patterns -C hanges in the way the child plays -C hanges in performance at school - L ack of interest in favorite toys or activities - L oss of new skills, such as toilet training - L oss of balance or unsteady walking - Vomiting We are all looking forward to the return of summer to be outside and get active. By committing to safety now, you can help assure a carefree summer of fun this year and every year. l

Active Children

and Their Glasses Here are some essential tips on choosing corrective vision devices for active kids. If you have an active child who needs to wear glasses, you’re familiar with durability concerns. When parents buy eyeglasses for children and teenagers, they have two main concerns – 1. Will the glasses get lost, and 2. Will the glasses get broken? Kids are meant to be active and to play sports. Wearing glasses doesn’t have to slow them down. There are a variety of different eyewear frames available specifically for kids. Frames by Miraflex® and Nano® are unbreakable with a fall or impact. These frames can come with an elastic band wrap for little ones as well as an active child who wants to run the soccer field without having to worry about his glasses consistently. In addition to a sturdy frame, lens material is also critical to consider for safety. Polycarbonate or Trivex lenses provide the best protection for your child as these materials are shatterproof. Sports goggles are another option that will work with your child’s prescription. They can wear these during indoor and outdoor sports. But what if the glasses are getting in the way when wearing a football, baseball, or hockey helmet? Contact lenses are a great choice and have many options, such as single-use daily lenses, which work great for sporting activities, or contact lenses that adapt to changing light for superior visual performance during outdoor sporting activities. Whether it’s a durable pair of glasses, sports goggles, or contact lenses, there are many excellent vision correction options for active kids. l

Candied Rainbow Grapes

Bright beautiful colors scream SPRING! This month we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day so we can’t forget to include rainbows! Ready to try something new? Here’s what you need and what to do: INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb of grapes; washed and removed from stem. • 1 box of Jell-O flavored gelatin. Grab multiple boxes for different colors of the rainbow. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Grab a baking sheet and line with parchment paper. 2. Submerge washed grapes in a big bowl of water. 3. Pour each of your Jell-O boxes into separate bowls. 4. Take a grape from the water and use a toothpick to roll the grape in one of the Jell-O mixes. 5. Place the coated grape on the baking sheet. 6. When finished with grapes, place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for one hour. 7. After the hour, remove the toothpicks and place grapes on a tray or in a bowl. l

Get Ready for Next Winter NOW

It’s never too early to get your home ready for next winter, so make sure your home is efficiently winter-proofed. There are many DIY techniques for preserving home heat, however, professional furnace maintenance and inspection is the most important. Thanks to a certain pandemic and typical winter weather, we’ve all been spending more time than usual in our homes lately. You may have found yourself realizing that perhaps your home is lacking in some areas regarding heating efficiency. Drafty windows or doors may have been easier to overlook when you spent more time out of the house, but now it’s a more noticeable issue. With warmer weather not too far around the corner, now is an excellent time to address the problems that cause inefficient heating scenarios so that come next winter, you and your house are ready. In older homes, leaky windows and doors can be shored up with weather stripping or plastic coverings as affordable solutions. If your budget allows, the ideal solution is replacing ill-fitting doors and old windows. Nothing says you have to do all of them at once. Many homeowners find that updating windows and doors in phases is affordable and minimizes the inconvenience of managing multiple window and door upgrades. If your home has a fireplace, be sure to close the flue when not in use. It’s easy to overlook but leaving it open equates to leaving a window open. Another simple technique for preserving home heat is

to open the blinds and curtains on windows during sunny days, especially south-facing windows. The solar heat generated will lessen the load on your furnace. Preventative maintenance is always a prudent practice to avoid unexpected repair and replacement expenses. Scheduling regular inspections of your HVAC system is a simple and affordable option versus a middle-of-the-weekend system breakdown that could likely be avoided. If you want to make it relatively effortless, look into a maintenance service contract with a local HVAC company. Have a professional inspect your ductwork. Often there are pinholes, gaps, and ill-fitting seams that can significantly diminish your furnace’s efficiency. The other simple maintenance practice is to replace your furnace filter regularly. Finally, while the wind is still howling and cooler temperatures prevail, make a note of any and all spots in your house that are a source of air leakages, such as gaps around chimneys, unfinished spaces behind cabinets, utility cutouts, and recessed lighting. A bead of caulk can go a long way to addressing these sources of inefficiency. l
