welcome
Happy St. Patrick’s Day Welcome to our 10th Annual Summer Camp issue. I am excited for you to see all the camps and summer programs we have to keep your kids busy over the summer months. The ‘Hood team has done an amazing job of doing all the hard work for you! All you need to do is let the kids pick which camps are their favorites! We have all the details regarding pricing, dates, and times so your camp decision can be simplified! If you are reading our digital edition or going to our website, you just need to click on the links and it takes you right to the website of the camp you are looking at! If you aren’t thinking summer camps or programming quite yet, don’t worry we will have all of them on our website! Have you been following along about one our team member’s, Jaclyn, and the birth of her sweet little girl Breslyn? Jaclyn has been giving tips about being a mom to her third little girl and moms are loving her ideas! Isn’t Breslyn just the cutest? Have you started thinking about St. Patrick’s Day yet? We have some fun ideas for you to do this year! We started a tradition in our house where the kids like to wake up on St. Patrick’s Day morning and have a treasure hunt to find things. They don’t really care about the items, but they really enjoy the experience of finding the treasures! We
would love to hear about your family’s St. Patrick’s Day traditions too! Chime in on Facebook or Instagram and tell us! Make sure to check out our calendar of events (did you know it is online too?) for activities to keep you busy every day of the week! All of our events are conveniently sorted by age and type of activity. However, the BEST part is you can add the events right to your personal calendar, so you don’t forget about them! I know all of you are busy parents like myself and if it is not in the calendar, it is not going to happen! I am excited for you to meet our first Inspiring Teen of 2020! We have gotten so many fantastic nominations and Riley is a great teen for us to start the year out with. This teen has dedicated himself to serving others and we can’t wait for you to read more about him! If you know a teen who is inspiring others make sure to nominate them on our website. Make sure you are following us on Facebook and Instagram! You never know when we might do a post asking for pictures of kids for the next issue.

baby by Jaclyn Small
One Month In
We are officially one month into newborn bliss. One month ago, we welcomed our third baby girl in to our family. Even though we have been down this road twice before it all seems new again! You forget how small and delicate they are. You forget how soft their perfect skin is. But one thing that is unforgettable? That amazing newborn smell. It is to be expected that life becomes a little more chaotic when bringing home a new baby, however, our adjustment period has been fairly smooth. When you bring home your first baby it is terrifying. There is no amount of classes and reading that can truly prepare you for that. When you bring home your second, it’s a little easier. And by a little I mean still scary and still having moments of “how am I going to handle this?” But with the third, it definitely seemed like an easier transition. You have a little more knowledge of what to do and quite a few tricks in your back pocket of things that have worked before. Plus, older siblings make fantastic helpers! Some extra little hands to help hold the baby or find the pacifier means a little more freedom for mom to do crazy things like go to the bathroom or grab a bottle of water! One of the biggest changes I made when preparing for our 3rd baby was downsizing our list of “must-
8|

haves”. Like many, we were blessed to have a baby shower when we were expecting our first baby and received many wonderful gifts. Throw in some hand-me-down items from friends and family and new parent shopping sprees left us bursting at the seems with baby products galore...most of which we never used. A few years ago we did a deep clean and rid ourselves of all things baby. Honestly, at that time we didn’t know if another baby was in our future and even if it was, I knew I was going to do things different. While I would never take away the fun for new parents to spoil themselves when hitting the baby aisles at a store, I would encourage you to do a little research and invest in some quality pieces and less miscellaneous items that may look cute, but really just add clutter to your home. During this first month of postpartum, here are some items that I would urge new parents to consider for their families. l

Solid food: Is your baby ready?
Changes happen so fast when babies are growing and developing. One of those exciting transitions is when they are ready to start trying solid foods! It’s important to watch for signs that your baby might be ready for foods before introducing stage-appropriate foods.
Usually around 4 to 6 months of age, when babies have developed good head and neck control, they will signal interest in food by watching you eat and reacting by leaning towards or reaching for foods that you are eating. When beginning baby foods, remember that some gagging is ok as this is a new experience for them! After he/she is swallowing baby foods without difficulty, you can add more texture and introduce a variety of different flavors. This stage sometimes goes quickly and before you know it, your baby is ready to move on to table foods! Babies are typically ready for table foods at 8 or 9 months. Your baby may begin showing readiness by grabbing at the spoon and wanting to self-feed. Another sign might be eating baby foods without losing much out of the mouth or sitting unsupported. Small, chopped pieces of cooked vegetables or soft fruits (without skins or seeds) are good first foods to try as this will allow your baby the experience of picking up pieces of food from their tray. As a reminder, make sure to give only a few pieces at a time. A good way to teach chewing is to provide a hard munchable—a stick shaped food that your baby cannot actually bite a piece off of. This could be a large carrot stick or a frozen bagel strip. This helps with teething and encourages the jaw to learn a chewing motion – plus it’s great sensory input. Here are some other fun tips for this exciting stage: • Roll soft foods in crushed-up graham cracker to make them easier to pick up • T ry giving foods in different shapes after he/she shows they can mash foods up well with their gums – i.e. provide foods in stick shapes so they can try holding and biting pieces • T ry adding small amounts of different seasonings/ spices, such as cinnamon • Let them explore various dips to encourage new flavors It’s critical to ALWAYS supervise your child during meals and snacks. If your child demonstrates difficulty progressing to new foods, frequent coughing or vomiting during meals, or difficulty manipulating foods in the mouth, please reach out to a therapist to discuss possible interventions available to help with successful eating and drinking. Bon Appetit! l

Infant Colds: What’s normal and what’s not
What causes the common cold? The general cause of a common cold is a virus. A few common viruses are rhinovirus, enterovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). A lot of parents have misconceptions of RSV and believe that if their child contracts the virus they’re going to end up in the hospital or even develop asthma. But, that’s not quite true. Since 96 percent of all children develop RSV at least once before they’re 2, it can be considered a common cold as well. What are the symptoms of a cold in an infant? Symptoms of a cold in an infant generally start with a low-grade fever and nasal congestion. Infants get all plugged up inside and then two to three days later generally start having a lot of post-nasal drip, increasing a cough and causing a runny nose. If your child has a green or yellow runny nose in the first three to four days of a cold, that’s normal and not considered a sinus infection — it’s just that the mucus has been sitting in the nose for so long. That generally fades away within 7 to 10 days and the fever is usually gone in 2 to 3 days. Is there anything parents can do to prevent a cold? Avoid close contact with your child. More specifically,
12 |
March 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com
no sharing cups, spoons or straws. Your child should also have their own towel when they have a cold. You should avoid close kissing as well. You can maybe kiss them on the forehead, but not too close. What can a parent do to help a child with a cold? The first thing a parent shouldn’t do is worry. Most colds last 7 to 10 days. As long as your child is comfortable and does not have a prolonged fever or respiratory difficulties, hang in there and things will get better. Humidified air is one of the best things you can do. It will help lubricate the nasal sinuses and prevent cough. If your child’s uncomfortable, use of Tylenol and Ibuprofen would be appropriate. Use upright positioning for small infants and children, but only while they’re awake, and flat positioning while they sleep. Nasal saline can also help congestion. When does a child need to see a physician? During a cold, your baby or infant may need to see a physician or health care professional if their symptoms are prolonged. If they extend past 7 to 10 days, you may want to call or bring your child in. If there are symptoms such as irritability, prolonged fever or respiratory difficulty, make sure to see a physician or health care professional. l

Camping First Aid Checklist Band-Aids. Small cuts and blisters are bound to happen. Keeping some bandages in your campers first aid kit can help. Of course, large cuts or injuries should always be directed to someone in charge. Antibacterial ointment. Should a small cut occur, be sure your camper puts some ointment on it to speed up the healing process and to avoid infection. Extra toothbrush. Pack an extra toothbrush in your camper’s bags. Accidents happen and it’s easy to drop while heading to the bathroom to brush. Camps often have outdoor bathrooms or dorm settings and should their toothbrush hit the ground it’s best to just throw it away. Sunscreen. Summer camps often mean a lot of outdoor time and protecting against sunburns is vital. Aloe. In the chance that your camper does get too much sun, having something to offer relief and comfort is important. Bug spray. Camps that are based outside and especially near water such as lakes can lead to mosquito bites. Be sure to send some repellent along.
Cortisone cream. If bug bites do happen, having something to help counteract the itch and swelling is good. Extra zip plastic bags. Packing a couple extra zip up bags can be used for a variety of reasons. They’re great for keeping items dry or separating wet towels and swimsuits from other clothes when packing for the return home. A small flashlight and a few extra batteries. If your camp allows, you may want to consider sending a book light with your camper too. This could give your child a chance to do a little reading before rest time or prior to bed. Lip balm- with SPF. It’s important to protect your lips from those UV rays too. Travel tissues and hand wipes. Hitting the travel section at the store can be a great idea before packing. Some extra tissues in their bags can help in case they’re not near a bathroom. Disposable wet wipes are perfect for cleaning up hands when your camper can’t make it to a sink. l

Inspiring Teens in the Community
Riley What makes this person an inspiring teen?
Riley gives selflessly of his time and talent to make our community a better place day in and day out. Riley has volunteered hundreds of hours at church, at the VFW, and for the Marine Corps JROTC program at Lincoln High School. In addition to all of his hours of service, he has maintained a 4.0 grade point average for 6 straight semesters while taking an incredibly difficult class load that will allow him to enter the SD School of Mines with his entire freshman year nearly completed! While academic achievements and extra-curricular activities are testaments to the hard-working nature that Riley possesses, what they don’t tell you about him is the amazing heart for loving others that make Riley a truly inspiring teen. Riley has mentored countless youth by making them feel welcomed and included at church, in marching band, or in the JROTC program. Riley has gone out of his way to ensure that every person he comes in contact with has a smile on their face. Not a minute goes by when he isn’t trying to cheer someone up or make another
person’s day brighter. Riley will do great things in this life because of the knowledge and skills he possesses, but he will change the world because of the love and light that he shines on each and every person he meets.
If you were to use five words to describe this teen, what would they be? Funny, Hard-working, Reliable, Trustworthy, Smart
What is one quote that you think describes this teen?
“The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” – Albert Schweitzer.

Hear from mor parents onlinee
The thought of sending your child away to college can bring mixed emotions for any parent. On one hand, you are so proud of the person they have become and want to watch them spread their wings and soar! But on the other hand, you want to make sure they are well taken care of and have all of the tools they need to succeed! We chatted with local moms, Jillian Lemons and Christy Duncan, about their college visit experiences and have outlined some of their best pieces of advice. What kinds of things did you look for before getting to campus and while on campus? “The things I looked for while we were at campus was the security and safety of the dorms, cafeteria area and how the meal plan worked, laundry, etc.. Typical “mom” stuff.” - Jillian “We looked for what programs the schools offered, cost and logistics of getting home for the holidays. Oklahoma and Purdue were both long drives and no big airports near to fly home during the winter when roads can be less than desirable. We looked at job placement, intern/coop programs that the school offered along with programs offered before visiting. We signed up for big group visits for all of the schools like when they had all the science and engineering people there.” - Christy What kinds of questions did you ask when you were on campus? “We asked quite a few questions in regards to coursework, requirements, etc. We also talked about scholarships and other financial information. But we mostly learned about the classes she will be taking in order to earn her degree, cool activity clubs that the school offers, how living arrangements, etc.” - Jillian “We asked questions like do you offer e-books instead
of all of the money needed for textbooks, programs to get students involved, job placement, how large classes are, student success rates of kids sticking with it were questions we asked on tours. We should have asked about how difficult it is to get into your major for your junior and senior year. Spencer, our son, had to apply to the college of science and engineering for his junior and senior years and found lots of kids didn’t get into their college of choice for their major so they had to come up with a plan B.” - Christy What kind of emotions are you feeling at this stage of their journey? “I’m coming to realize that even though I’m sad about one chapter of my daughter’s life closing, I’m even more excited for the next one to begin. She will be a senior next school year and I hope to make it all about her and the exciting time starting in her life, versus all about us as parent and what we’re “losing” and how sad we will be.” - Jillian “When Spencer and I went to sit in on a biomedical class, I had to use the restroom before the class started. Spencer went into the classroom and when I returned to the classroom to find him, I didn’t see an almost grown up kid picking a career path. I saw a 5-year-old boy in his Blues Clues outfit drinking chocolate milk.” - Christy l March 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com |

Summer Activities Can Lead to
Summer Injuries During the busy summer months, we try to squeeze in as much fun as possible. Especially outside fun, such as hiking, biking, and camping outside to soak up the sun! This can be a lot more activity than we are used to after hibernating during the South Dakota winter. While it is great to get out and be active, remembering to pace ourselves, stretch, and stay hydrated is very important too. It is important to listen to your body to avoid dehydration or even painful injuries. If you notice any of the following red flags, you may need to take a water break, stretch more or set up an appointment with your chiropractor.
• I f you have fallen and have pain even after your bruise has gone away • I f you notice your normal range of motion or flexibility is reduced
Signs of dehydration:
• I f you are experiencing headaches and don’t normally suffer from them
•H eadaches or getting light headed or dizzy when out in the hot sun
• I f you are having muscle aches longer than 5 days after your activity
• S kin staying flushed and bright red even while drinking water • Not urinating for more than 2-3 hours
When you need to stretch more: • I f you are planning on exercising significantly more than you normally do • I f you have recently worked out and have sore muscles • I f you get muscle cramps easily (also… eat a banana before you begin!)
Time to call your Chiropractor: • I f you have overdone it and the pain is more than a normal ache
52 |
• I f you are experiencing shooting pains down your legs or arms
March 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com
When exercising, a good way to determine how much time you should spend stretching, is to calculate 10% of your total activity time, and warm up and cool down for that amount of time. So for example, if you are planning on hiking for 1 hour (60 min) you should stretch and warm up for 6 minutes and cool down and stretch for an additional 6 minutes. This will really help you stay loose and help to prevent injuries. But if an injury does occur, don’t wait too long before seeking help from your local, friendly Chiropractor. l

Your Mom Tip:
Our family loves to spend weekends at the lake in the summer time with camping and boating! A helpful tip is to have each family member keep a travel bag in their rooms and make sure everything is ready to go each week for the following weekend. Also, doing chores during the week helps keep up the yard and household chores. This helps all of us enjoy the weekend getaways, but keep everything in order at home during the week!

Tips Even More Online!
•P lan ahead – start a savings account at your bank and name it “Summer Camp” and then set up an automatic monthly transfer into the account so that when the time comes to pay, you already have the money saved up and it doesn’t make such a dent in your monthly budget. •H ave more than one child? Make sure to check for sibling discounts if you plan on sending more than one child to camp this summer. Along those same lines, it never hurts to ask if they have any other discounts available that you might be eligible for. •G et your kids involved – this is one of our favorite ways to save for summer camp! As a family, decide on a realistic dollar amount for your child to help contribute to the camp expenses. Then brainstorm and come up with a plan to help them reach their goal. Let them get creative in the beginning and don’t try too hard to give them all of the ideas – give them a little space to think and you will be pleasantly surprised at their creative ideas. It might be tempting to just pay them for chores around the house to help them reach their goal, but if you do that then remember it is actually you still covering all of the costs so factor that into your budget. Think seasonally, right now is a great time for your kiddos to earn some cash by offering to shovel for a neighbor so they don’t have to go out in the cold. Maybe they offer to walk a dog, or mow lawns or pull weeds as the weather gets nicer. Not only are you helping them learn to be financially responsible, you are also teaching them how good it feels to offer help to others. It’s a double win! l

Answer: My hinny is clean!!
As a kid it doesn’t get much better than overnight summer camp, but as the parent it can come with a price tag that is a bit too hefty. With a little bit of research and planning, you can avoid the financial stress of summer camp.

Lunch on the Go
Packing lunches for your children can become a daunting task. We often get into a “food funk” when we feel like we’ve been eating the same thing every day. This summer when your child is headed out the door for camp, send them with a lunch that looks good, tastes good, and provides nutrients! For younger children, make them a sack lunch that will excite their senses. We’ve all heard the saying, “We eat with our eyes first” and for little kids that couldn’t be more true. Forget the old-fashioned plain sandwich bread and instead opt for a fresh baked option that is free of additives and preservatives. When your bread is a statement piece on its own, finding something to go in the middle of the sandwich becomes much less stressful. From deli meats and cheese to sweet spreads the options are endless.
Using a cookie cutter shape to add a bit of fun to their lunch is a great way to keep your child excited about eating a healthy lunch option. For older children who need to keep up their strength for intense sports camps, look for options that are both convenient and provide the right kind of nutrients to keep up their endurance! Bread rolls are a great item to have on hand for those busy teens. They are easy to throw in a backpack and quick to grab and eat during a break. There are many flavor options that are sure to please everyone and offer a perfect healthy carb option. Knowing what is in the food that we are fueling families with is so important. Freshly baked bread with ingredients you can pronounce and no preservatives is one simple way you can feel confident that you are giving everyone in your family the best option for your busy life! l

Tire Tips for
Summer Trips
Don’t let the cold temperatures distract you - summer will be here before we know it. Soon you will be sending the kids off to camp, heading off to the cabin, or exploring the country with your family. As you run through your packing checklist – sunglasses, snacks, road trip playlist – make sure “check tires” is on that list so that they are ready for the ride. Follow these simple steps before you head out on the road this summer: 1) Check Your Air Pressure Proper tire pressure is key to the overall performance and safety of your vehicle. Maintaining the correct air pressure is crucial during hot summer months. Make it a habit to check your air pressure at least once a month, and especially before long trips. Pro tip: The best time to check your tires before you start driving when they’re at their coolest temperature. 2) Examine Your Tread Depth Tire tread depth plays a pivotal role in traction and handling, making it very important that you regularly check the tread depth of your tires once a month, and before long road trips. You can do this by using a tread depth gauge, inspecting the wear bar indicators built into the tire, or the penny test. If you’d rather have an expert check it for you, stop by your local Discount Tire for a free inspection.

3) Inspect Your Spare Tire If your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire, make sure to check your spare whenever you inspect your other tires. Check the tread, air pressure, and age of your spare tire to ensure it’s in perfect condition when you need it. Keep in mind that some vehicles today do not come with a spare tire. Few things put a halt to a road trip as quickly as a flat tire, so be sure to have a plan in place should you need a spare tire without one in your vehicle. 4) Don’t Overload Overloading your vehicle has a similar impact on your tires as driving on underinflated ones. It can lead to poor handling response and excessive heat buildup, potentially causing tire failure. Make sure to check the manufacturer specifications for load-carrying capacity when packing your vehicle for a road trip. The manufacturer information can typically be found with the tire-inflation information on the driver’s door panel, in the glove box, or in the owner’s manual. l

Whether or not you actually carry out a springcleaning agenda you should at least pay some attention to the systems and parts that comprise your home’s HVAC system. Your heating system has been working hard over the winter months and the AC system has sat dormant, which means there are some important maintenance tasks to undertake this spring. Practicing these regular maintenance tips can help your systems work efficiently and avoid costly repair or replacement expenses. Cleaning the Outside Air Conditioning Condenser Unit For homes with central air, the outside condenser unit is susceptible to dirt, vegetation debris and foreign objects. First, make sure power to the unit is turned off. It is important to inspect the unit and remove by hand any larger objects such as sticks, twigs, feathers, leaves, etc. Once the unit is free of larger items, you can use a leaf blower to remove smaller items and free the unit of dust and dirt. You can also accomplish this using a shop vac with a soft brush attachment. Another option is to rinse the unit with a garden hose and a nozzle on a gentler spray setting. It is important that no matter which method you use to be careful not to bend the fins that surround the outside of the unit. Finally, clear away or trim any surrounding vegetation. Cleaning Indoor Registers and Vents Each time you vacuum it’s a good idea to take a pass over the floor registers, but each spring you may want to switch to the wand and put on the brush attachment to clean your home’s air return vents. If the vacuum brush fails to remove caked on dust then you would do well to remove the vent and soak in soapy water, brush clean, rinse and dry. Professional HVAC Cleaning While these steps will help maintain the effective operation of your HVAC system, it is still a good idea to schedule a regular maintenance and cleaning appointment with an HVAC professional. Along with the steps above, a professional cleaning will include areas that you as a homeowner just can’t get to, such as the ductwork and air conditioner coils. Not only does the contamination of these areas by dust, pet dander, and allergens hamper the efficient operation of your heating and cooling systems, it makes for a compromised living environment leading to dust covered surfaces and potential health and breathing issues. l

Appliance Shopping 101 The average person spends a minimum of 37 minutes a day in the kitchen cooking and preparing meals. In addition, the average daily time spent doing laundry is around 17-30 minutes. When you consider how much time your family uses these products, the pressure to pick wisely when replacing them can be stressful. The key is to stay positive and focus on how this decision can lead to making life easier and more efficient in the long run. Features: Like many things, your appliances have options. Do you merely want the basic model or the fully loaded option? Determine what you need and what options you will use regularly to help you dial into the perfect appliance. Also, now is the time to consider if you are ready to link your new appliances to your smartphone or your family’s hub. Could these features make your life and chores less stressful? Don’t be afraid of the new options.
Reliability: Since you will be unable to really know if your new products will have the reliability you need, it is important to do some research. Knowing the good, bad and indifferent will save you time and help you make the most informed decision. Consumer Reports, YouTube and Google searches will aid you with your research, but speaking to a knowledgeable, independent retailer will give you the best advice on

reliability. The more you know the better chance the new appliance will meet your expectations.
Measurements: Knowing the size and dimensions of your current product is important, as not all appliances are the same size, especially refrigerators and cooktops. Not only is it important to know the dimensions of the products, but it is important to know the dimensions of the space where the appliance will be installed. You want to ensure that the new products will be easy to install. A personal experience, with a friendly and knowledgeable independent appliance sales associate will provide you with the ability to talk through your needs and desires and find the machine that best fits your budget. l
