We recently put a call out for expectant parents who would like to do a gender reveal courtesy of ‘Hood Magazine! The May family from Luverne, Minnesota was chosen and they were willing to let us follow along for the party! Rebekah and her husband Joseph work in Sioux Falls and Brandon and have a little boy named Lee who is 19 months old. When they found out they were expecting their second child, they knew they wanted to do something special. “With the second one, you don’t have a baby shower and at first I didn’t want to know until baby came,” said Rebekah. “But then we wanted to

make it a surprise for our family and I wanted to do a little celebration with this one.” The Mays received a special cake from Sugar’s Baked Goods and Sweet Treats and these great images captured by studiofotografie. “Seeing family together and having that bond is the biggest thing that me and my husband looked forward to,” said Rebekah. “And being able to share the news before the big news of baby arriving.” The Mays are expecting a baby girl to arrive in early August. Safe Posing Practices for
Newborn Portraits Congratulations! You’ve brought a new little life into this world and its time to celebrate your beautiful baby! One of the first exciting things most parents do upon bringing baby home is start taking baby’s first portraits. There are so many options out there to document this amazing time – and choosing a professional photographer might be your safest option. Safety of your baby is most important. Many times you see images of newborns in poses that, without proper support, are not safe. Images where babies head is in hands, or where baby is suspended, should ALWAYS be photographed as a composite, meaning a hand is always in the image for baby’s safety and is then edited out. This new little life is so important and safely capturing your images should always be a priority. Pinterest can be a really fun place to get inspiration, but keep in mind that putting baby in a pumpkin in the fall, or wrapping him or her in holiday lights can be very dangerous. Many times, professionals will photograph baby and then edit them into certain situations. Such images, when done correctly and

focusing on baby’s safety, are actually composites created using Photoshop. Also, because newborns have a startle reflex, baby should never be suspended or lying on a high surface without full support, as they can startle, or roll. Baby’s neck should always be supported as well. The best rule of thumb: if you or your photographer do not have the experience with a certain pose you’ve found, simplify it. Simple, classic images can stand the test of time without using props or poses that can date the image, or be unsafe. We’ve all seen those “Pinterest fails” pictures. Keep it simple and your images will be timeless. n

First Birthday Bliss:
Planning the Perfect First Birthday Life is a celebration each and every day. We love celebrating life with birthdays of all ages- and with all themes of course! After planning many birthdays, there are some tips that we think you should know. First birthday’s can be especially exciting. We want to provide you with some tips on planning the perfect birthday party for your little one. Be sure to start the planning process about two months in advance. Two Months:
All photos courtesy of Serendipitous Events by Jessica and Becca Marie Photography
Some of the beginning tasks will seem quite mediocre, but will serve as a big part in the planning of the party. The first thing you’ll want to do is think of a fun theme, create a Pinterest board (remember that not everything on Pinterest is realistic!), think of vendors you like, call a planner and make a guest list. Although a birthday party can be done without a planner, they will help lead and guide you through the planning process. Next, you’ll want to think about the venue. The venue should be booked two months in advance to ensure the availability unless using your own home.

Around the time of your child's
1ST BIRTHDAY is when the
1ST DENTAL VISIT is recommended!
Three Weeks: It’s time to send out invites. The theme can be implemented in the invitations, and this a great way to set the tone for the party! Once you’ve got the venue booked and the invites out, start thinking about food, decorations and photography. This day only happens once in your child’s lifetime, so be sure you’ve got someone who’s able to capture all the exciting moments of the day. When thinking of food, try new and unique snacks for the kids. The theme can be implemented in the food as well, such as matching the color of the punch to the theme’s color.

Week Prior: It’s time to start planning the set up. When utilizing another facility, we suggest having your decorations and food ready before arriving. A couple days before the party, you’ll want to set up the decorations how you will have them on the day of the party. This will help alleviate stress the day-of, as well as provide you with an idea of any extra materials you’ll need. Remember, if you hire a planner this is something they have drafted and ready to set up.
Day-of: The day-of the party, don’t forget to ask for help. This is a big day for moms & dads as well. Make sure you have fun to enjoy the day and make great memories. n

Planning a First Birthday: A Mom’s Perspective
When did you start planning the first birthday party? I started thinking about it when
Did you set a budget?
Max was six months old! I talked to my husband to decide what we wanted for his birthday. At two months out we got our guest list together and sent Evites to everyone (I mailed ones to people who don’t have email). Then I started looking for a place to have it. Most hotels were booked! If you’re going to plan a party on the weekend in Sioux Falls – book months in advance!
Yes, budget friendly! I had a friend take pictures for me, I bought fondant animals for the cake, but made it myself. For decorations, I bought from a local store, but decorated the display table only (not the whole room). I emailed invitations and used some leftover paper plates and napkins.
Where did you go? I decided on a local hotel with
Why did you decide to go all out for the first birthday? It’s a first birthday-it only happens
a water park. We rented a suite where our family could sit around and not have to be in the loud, humid pool area. The party itself was held in the breakfast area at the hotel. It was more roomy with everyone in there for cake and presents.
once! I wanted to share the joy of Max’s first year with all my family and friends. It is a lot of work the day of the party taking care of your one year old and being a hostess of the party, but it was worth it! I loved seeing all the smiles and laughs from everyone.
How many people did you invite? We invited 50+ people. We have family from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
I also made a photo tower for everyone to see pictures from his first year. I took monthly photos and put those on one side. It was a great way to share memories of the past year! n

child by Sanford Health
The Allergy-Friendly Birthday Party Birthday parties are a staple of childhood, but for parents of kids with allergies, they can also be rather stressful. Worrying about whether your child will be exposed to his or her trigger allergen will make the day anything but fun. However, by following a few simple tips, you can plan or send your kid to any party. More than eight percent of children in the United States have allergies. They can range from mild to severe and can occur due to contact with peanuts, milk, eggs, fish, wheat and soy. And while some kids will grow out of them, many will last their entire lives. But Sanford pediatric gastroenterologist Brock Doubledee, DO, wants parents to know that having allergies doesn’t have to hold your child back from having fun with friends. “Communication is key on both sides,” says Dr. Doubledee. “If you are the parent of a child with allergies, talk to the host and inform them of your child’s allergy and how severe it is. Also it’s important they know how your child will react. Sometimes allergens affect people immediately, but other times you won’t know something is wrong for up two hours.” If your child needs an EpiPen, be sure he or she has it at all times and that an adult at the party knows how to use it. “They aren’t as simple as a regular shot,” says Dr. Doubledee. “You have to forcefully insert it and then hold it there for at least 10 seconds so all of the medication can be properly injected.” If you are hosting the party, there are a number of things you can do to make sure the EpiPen isn’t

needed. If you are cooking food for a child with allergies, make sure you do it first and then cover it. Also lower cross-contamination risk by washing your hands thoroughly before handling the food. “Washing with soap and water is important,” says Dr. Doubledee. “I’m not sure if people realize that using a hand sanitizer won’t remove the allergen from your skin. You have to use soap and water.” Using these simple tips will help you throw a fun and inclusive party for all your child’s guests. n

Themes for Boys and Girls
You still have three months before your son or daughter’s birthday, yet it seems the same question is already being asked of you on a daily basis…”What are we going to do for my birthday, Mom?!”. Kids look forward to this day all yearlong and they want a party to remember. All it takes is a little creativity and imagination. The hottest trends in birthday parties are all about participation. The décor is fun and looks great, but the children want to be included in the theme. Your daughter and her friend’s can dress up as movie stars for the night in a “Hollywood” themed party, complete with a makeup table, red carpet and paparazzi. Everything from the invi-
tations being their ticket in, to the pictures of themselves they can take home at the end of the night…playing the part to the very end is key. And what boy doesn’t want to BECOME his favorite Minecraft character? Some cardboard boxes and paint is all it takes for your son and his friends to create their very own, real life Minecraft experience in the backyard. So whether you get them busy in a Lego building competition or have them create their own spa for the day, get the kids involved! Let them be a part of the planning. After all, who knows more about what a kid wants…than a kid! n

“Party Favor”
19
Here are some ideas: Decorate shirts, water bottles, hats, crowns, fairy wings, or capes. Make jewelry or other wearable items for a party activity. Then it becomes a project and a party favor. Superhero capes worn at the party can be made from a decorated pillowcase that can be used later at home for both, a cape or a pillowcase.
Parents of birthday children feel the need to send party guests home with their own huge collection of bobbles and trinkets. In many cases, parents of attendees dread the piles of candy and trinket toys that end up cluttering children’s rooms and are never played with. But don’t worry! Child birthday party etiquette says that party favors really are not necessary. Amazingly, most parents won’t be upset when their child doesn’t come home with a bag full of bouncy balls or character rings. The party experience alone should be all that a child should expect from a family hosting a party. It is important to teach your child to attend parties to celebrate their friend’s special day, not to get stuff. For those who feel the need to send your party guests home with something, here are two guidelines to keep in mind. 1. H ave the party favor be a part of the party experience, or a party activity. 2. F orgo small trinkets and large amounts of candy for one larger more useful item that costs the same as other smaller items would have, it is not about quantity, but usefulness.
Build your own light sabers from pool noodles and duct tape, use them for party games and activities and send them home at the end of the party. At a camping party, decorate a hiking stick or marshmallow roaster. Use it, and then send it home! Decorate cookies or cupcakes! This can be a great activity and party favor you can send home. Parents are ok with this because once the cookie is gone; there is no clutter leftover. Costumes, hats, or masks a child makes and uses as part of the celebration are considered a party favor. A box of crayons, some play dough, or sidewalk chalk can make a great balloon weight and party favor that will get use outside of the party more than your average trinket. Try to avoid slime, paint or other messy items kids cannot use without supervision. A party passport or activity badge that has activities to check off can also be a low-cost DIY memento from a party. Kids will remember all they did and share the stories with their parents when they get home. It also helps guests know what to expect next. n

Childcare
Your child’s birthday is a milestone you’ll want to celebrate with everyone. Childcare is such a big part of your child’s life, you might want to share the celebration with them, but how should it be handled? Daycare/childcare parties shouldn’t be a problem as long as you keep a few things in mind and follow your center’s guidelines. 20 |
May/June 2015 | thehoodmagazine.com
Communicate: First, talk to the director and your child’s caregiver to find out what is acceptable. Most places want to help celebrate your child’s big day! Finding out ahead of time what can be done will make it a lot easier for all involved. Make sure to get a count of the children in your child’s class and then start planning. Larger centers could have as many as 30 in a classroom, while an in-home center could have far less. Most daycares will like you to keep it simple, this is not a home party where you can invite your great uncle Harold to join you and it’s not an event party where you can expect your child’s teacher to dress up and make balloon animals for everyone. Keep it simple.
Setting the stage: Most centers have a set schedule and don’t really have the time for a huge party for every child. Keep decorations to a minimum.
Something sweet to eat: Find out the daycare’s policy on food brought in from the outside. Most places have gone to nut-free pre-packaged items, instead of home baked items. Also, consider avoiding cake as it creates a mess and more work for the staff.
It is better to give than to receive: Although most children associate birthday’s with presents, daycare is probably not the place for them. Instead, consider buying your child’s favorite book for the class and writing a dedication commemorating their special day on the inside cover.
The party is over: Be sure and thank everyone, including the staff, for helping to celebrate your child’s special day. If you should send home goodie bags, or favors be sure to include ones for any child that might have missed that day. In daycare we don’t want anyone to feel left out. n

Birthday Party Gift Etiquette Birthdays are such an exciting time for children. They wait all year for their special day and their special birthday party. Who will they invite? What will their theme be this year? What do they want for gifts? Sometimes, birthday parties can become very stressful for the parents, especially when it comes to presents. Kids, particularly school-aged, get invited to birthday parties all the time. It can be a struggle to know what is an appropriate present to give them. The gift can depend on many different factors; what’s the age of the child? How close are they to them? Many people can’t afford to provide an extravagant birthday present for each birthday party that their child gets invited to. A good price range to keep in mind would be anywhere between $10 to $30 dollars. Again, many factors go into choosing an appropriate present for a birthday party.
Lately, it’s been a trend for the birthday kid to ask for presents to give away to another charity. It’s amazing to see the compassion that some of these kids have for other people. If you are the parent of the birthday kid and they have requested this, it’s easy to get the word out to the invited guests. A statement like this works well. “In lieu of presents, Tyler has asked for gifts to be donated to (insert name). You can find a list of their requested donation items on their website.” There are a number of organizations that are always looking for donations. Try a children’s hospital, or even an animal shelter. Keep these tips in mind the next time you go shopping for another birthday party! n photos courtesy of The Event Company
Creative presents can be an interactive and fun way to save money, while still providing a present the child will love. If the birthday party is for a classmate, try a movie package! Find a DVD in the $5 section, add a bag of popcorn, a bag of candy, and a drink! It’s simple, it’s inexpensive, and you won’t have to shop for hours trying to find that ‘perfect’ present. If they are going to a family member’s birthday, it is accept-
able to put a little more money and thought into the present. Sometimes gift cards can be the greatest present a kid could ask for. Add a wallet or little coin purse, and it’s the perfect present!

CHIPOTLE’S PORK SCARCITY:
49
by Peggy Greenway, Featured Farmer Is it just my imagination, or are we bombarded with more and more food labels? Sometimes, a package of food has so many labels or “claims” listed, it cannot possibly hold one more. From all-natural, GMO free, gluten free, hormone free, humanely raised, organic; the list goes on. The problem with labels is that most of them are not certified, cannot be verified, or are just plain misleading. They are simply marketing tactics. I’d like to share that farmers don’t use hormones with hogs or poultry, so if you see chicken, turkey or pork labeled “no added hormones,” it’s simply a marketing tactic. Chipotle recently announced that it was not going to be selling carnitas in some locations because their pork supplier was found to be not in compliance with Chipotle’s animal care standards. The company requires pork to have access to the outdoors and/or have straw bedding. I support companies’ and farmers’ rights to choose the type of facilities in which they are going to raise their animals. However, when Chipotle announced
that it could not source enough humanely and sustainably raised pork, I knew they were off base. My husband and I used to raise our pigs in hoop barns with straw bedding; the very same system Chipotle loves. However, we made a change to our pig farm eight years ago by adding modern barns for one very important reason: We wanted to improve the comfort of our pigs. We are extremely happy with our modern, climatecontrolled barns and are certain our pigs are now much more comfortable. We know this because they are always content, less stressed and healthier. I’m extremely proud of the improved care we provide for our pigs and also proud of the efficiency that allows us to raise more pork while using less natural resources. My husband and I are not unique. This is the story of approximately 95 percent of pig farmers in the U.S. We are serious about good animal care and taking care of our environment. It does concern me that Chipotle would source from another country other than the U.S., a leader in pork. This is the true story of humanely and sustainably raised pork, and there’s no shortage. My family’s first priority is the comfort and care of our pigs, and I know I can say the same for farmers across the country.
Now switching gears from pigs to cows, my family also raises beef cattle on our farm, and we are happy to celebrate beef month in May. I’ve rounded up a few of my family’s favorite beef recipes that you can enjoy during the start of the summer months. Lean beef is a great way to give your body the protein, vitamins and minerals it needs. It has eight times more vitamin B12, six times more zinc and two and a half times more iron than a skinless chicken breast. Plus, few things get the mouth watering quite like the aroma of a steak sizzling on the grill on a spring night. Beef is a healthy part of a balanced diet.

10 Secrets Child’s Birthdayto a Pa Adults will Like rty .
Birthday parties are fun, right? If the idea of ice cream covered children racing around your home is keeping you from throwing your child their dream party, read on. Help has arrived! Some people have a natural ability to coordinate activities for large groups of children (like preschool teachers!) They dance that fine line between chaos and fun with grace and poise. If you are not one of those people, the tips to follow may help you maintain order while still allowing everyone to have a great time. • B efore the party, prepare the birthday child and lay out your expectations. Remind him that it is good to have fun, but we also have to keep everyone safe and happy. He will set the tone for the other children at the party. • I t is always wise to over plan when it comes to keeping kids busy. Whether the party is at home or elsewhere, have a variety of activities ready to go. Plan priority activities like eating cake, opening gifts, playing a game that your child is excited about, etc. Then prepare additional activities that you can add if those don’t take as long as you expect, or don’t go well. This can be a craft, game, book, etc. • K now yourself and your comfort level for noise or running around. At my daughter’s recent party the kids danced and cranked up the music. We knew all
of the kids attending and knew that they would be able to calm back down. Our family also does fine with noise. For some kids, this would be too difficult to manage and for some parents, that level of craziness would put them on edge.

• S et limits for the party guests. Before each transition, let them know your expectations. For a craft, that might mean how much of each supply they can use, or how to keep from making a giant mess. For other activities it is beneficial to give kids information on the noise level that is appropriate, whether running or walking is better and what to do if they are done or tired. Most kids want to please adults, but don’t always know what is appropriate. • I f all else fails and a child is struggling, don’t be afraid to give them a kind reminder. Try, “I need you to play nicely without wrestling with the other children. That will keep everyone safe.” If they still don’t, it may be time to try a more structured activity, or if nothing else works, give the parent a call. I hope that your child’s party is a great success and filled with happy memories! n

Tips & Tricks for a
GREEN Birthday Party! Throwing a fantastic kid’s birthday party and being environmentally friendly at the same time can be done. All you need is some planning and creativity! Invitations: • T he first step is inviting friends and family to your bash! One of my favorite things to do is re-use old cards by vertically cutting the card in the middle where the fold is. (You will discard the part of your re-used card that has the message on it/back of the card). Print off your birthday party information on cardstock on your home printer and use a spray adhesive or double sided tape to attach it to the back of the birthday card cover. Your card will be a one panel card with a front that is the recyclable birthday card cover and the back being the print off information for the party.
• P aper garland- Create the classic paper garland by linking the construction paper, newspaper or other paper scraps onto each other for a fun crafty look.
Wrapping Presents:
• H ow about an e-invitation? Many sites provide free invitations you can email. It is also great for your guests to send you an email right back with their RSVP.
Food:
• T ablecloth- Have your tablecloth be a giant coloring page! You can buy inexpensive butcher paper rolls that are sold at office supplies stores and craft stores. Place the paper over your table to cover and then provide crayons for kids to start their doodles. It’s an activity and decoration all in one!

If possible, spend a little extra money on durable party materials you can use again. It will save you money in the long run. Try to make purchases of party items universal so you can use them again for birthday parties, baby showers and more.
• A nother option is purchasing seed paper. Seed paper is a homemade paper that is made with seeds actually inside the paper. It is great for invitations for a unique look and when you are all done you can plant the invitation! You can find seed paper on many online sites and even customize them online with your party information included.
Decorations:
Visit
• U se the inside of paper grocery bags. Make it look country chic with a bow created out of hemp or burlap and have fun with it! • Gift bags are so convenient, cute and very reusable!
We see a lot of plastic tableware at birthday parties these days. Use real silverware and plates to save money by not having to buy plastic tableware. Plus, it makes the party a bit fancier. If you are an environmentally conscience party planner, you can get eco-friendly tableware. When you recycle the compostable cutlery/flatware they break down easily when recycled.
Cake: Enjoy time in the kitchen with your kid(s) creating a homemade cake while making some memories! n

PARTY
57
Like a Smarty
Because birthdays only come around once a year, make the party as unique as the child you are celebrating. Play is a natural way of learning for children and can keep them engaged for hours. Here are some ideas to help you throw a party that focuses on play and learning as part of the experience. •C hild Centered After all it is your child’s big day. Give them a party that’s original with a theme they create. Let the party incorporate things your child is interested in and enjoys doing. Keep the theme broad like science, arts, or sports. Find out what interests your child about this theme and let the planning begin.
•O ne-of-a-kind Just like your child is one-of-a-kind, make sure their birthday party is too! After your child has selected their theme, let them take part in the planning. Encourage your child to make their own decorations for their party. Your child could help design invitations and deliver them to their guests. Having them involved in the process sends the message that it’s their special day and they are important.
•S omething for Everyone Keeping the activities open-ended will ensure there’s something for everyone to explore, create and discover. With open-ended activities, there’s more than one way to engage, allowing all guests to connect their own interest and ideas. To do this, provide materials that support your
child’s chosen theme and invite guests to see what they can do. Children will put more focus on their process of creativity, using their imaginations and their own selfexpression.
• All for One Play games that ensure everyone is a part of a team. Keep the games team and goal orientated. Teamwork is an important thing to learn as a child; through it, you gain skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and sportsmanship.
• Time for Play Play is a vital part of childhood; it’s how children explore the world around them. When children are engaged in play, their minds are active and constantly searching for understanding and meaning. Play stimulates curiosity, creativity, and imagination. Make sure to set aside some time for the children to simply play. As you celebrate your child’s birthday, celebrate the value of learning through play too. n May/June 2015 | thehoodmagazine.com

Calming the Party Pressure There is a lot of pressure on parents about how to celebrate birthdays. So much anxiety and so many questions: • How do we compete? • How do we set apart our celebration? • What makes our party special? • How much money do we have to spend? Now the parties are becoming so big, parents are staying to enjoy the festivities. That brings more questions: • W ho do we invite? Work parents, school parents, or church parents? • Do we serve adult beverages? • Do we have cake or food? • Does anyone have allergies? • What will the other parents think? No matter what we do, we feel let down. Then there is the struggle between partners who may not agree on how elaborate to make the party.

Is it really for the kids? Many children get stressed with too many people, too many activities. Some children learn to feel entitled to get what they want when they want it, and can’t understand the difference between want and need. That feeling of enough moves further and further away. This creates more pressure.

ehaviors Managing By Parties Birthda
This is really not about the party, is it? Internal pressure to do the best, biggest, most beautiful, spectacular event is really about your own desire to be accepted and “good enough.” Yes, the secret is revealed. If you’re feeling pressure of any kind in any event, it’s time to take a look at your value. Your value has nothing do with anything that you do, or party that you create. Your value is in your spirit. Decide to bring value to your child’s life by stopping. Stop comparing and creating questions, stop repeating actions that cause unnecessary negative feelings without learning from them. Why? Because your child feels what you feel. You know that feeling you get when you walk in a tense room where you can cut that tension with a knife? Your child feels that when you’re under pressure. Since your child loves and trusts you, their subconscious mind decides in a split second: This is how to feel in this situation! I know you don’t want to teach that lesson. Telling them not to worry is like pointing out when to worry. Lead by example. Do what truly feels good and fun and compromise with your partner. Trim the guest list or do something without guests. Most importantly, make happy memories. n

Throwing a “Happy” Birthday
Cake, balloons, gifts and friends – there’s something magical about a child’s birthday. But there can be an “unhappy” side to birthday parties as well. Many parents feel obliged to keep the invited – and the uninvited – content. Sending invitations
Unless your child has only 10 classmates, it’s probably not realistic to invite everyone. In that case, it’s important to invite guests as discretely as possible. “First of all, NEVER have your child hand out invitations at school,” said Doniese Wilcox, Certified Family Life Educator at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. “There will always be hurt feelings in that case.” A couple of good options include mailing the invitations, or talking to parents directly by email or phone. You can also hand invitations to parents, such as after school during pickup, at church or another location where you can get their attention for a few moments. “Parents of the guests and the guest of honor should encourage their children to avoid talking about the party at school,” said Wilcox. “Children talk, but this is a good lesson in empathy.”
Activities that include everyone Birthdays aren’t happy when someone is sitting on the sidelines. Set up activities that keep guests occupied without a lot of “performance-based” spotlight. For example, sensory stations (such as molding play dough or digging in sand) for younger children are simple activities that teach hands-on

for healthy birth da party ideas. y information about textures. Crafts and dress-up stations teach the art of sharing, too.
Hosting the party at a destination – a park, zoo, swimming pool or rollerblading arena – keeps older kids easily entertained. Ask your spouse or another parent to help chaperone to keep guests safe and accounted for. Also, avoid games that result in winners and losers. No one wants to feel like a loser at a party!
Avoiding a meltdown For some kids, it’s hard to be alone in a new situation with a lot of commotion. “When inviting guests, offer parents the option to stay for a while at the party,” said Wilcox. “They’ll know if their child needs that extra support.” Once the child feels more comfortable and interested in the fun, parents can tell their child they will be back soon to hear about the party. This is a good opportunity for a child to experience a little independence. “If you’re the parent of the birthday child, encourage him to take a quieter child under his wing,” said Wilcox. “This gives another lesson in empathy.” And when the whole shebang is over, you’ll be pretty proud of your child’s grown-up behavior, too. n

for Your Birthday Celebrations
All it takes is a few gathered friends, a cake (or any special treat), and some candles and you’ve got yourself a fun birthday party. We have all seen the elaborately designed parties on Pinterest and in magazines; these are great for inspiration, but not so great for your budget! Unfortunately, we don’t all have hundreds of dollars to shell out for each birthday party. Thankfully, there are many ways you can create an exciting and memorable party without breaking the bank!
ple of nice serving trays to display your fruits and vegetables. As tempting as it may be to purchase pre-cut, pre-washed veggies and fruits, taking the time to wash and cut your own in-season produce can save you a lot of money.

meal, plan your party for 2 or 3 p.m., saying on the invitations that there will be desserts only or snacks provided. Send out email or Facebook invitations rather than mailing paper invitations.
Reuse/repurpose supplies – When you purchase party items, purchase items that can be used time and time again. Use solid colored reusable tablecloths, party plates, cups, even napkins. You can integrate a character or other theme in other ways. Creative labeling – Birthday parties don’t need to have elaborate snacks and decorations to be fun and memorable. For example, a ‘Frozen’ themed birthday party could include a bowl of pretzels with a sign that simply states “Sven’s

dipped treats are a delicious budget friendly option for party treats! Bake your own cake, or even better, let your child bake and decorate his or her own cake or cupcakes. Just make sure all of their measurements are correct and assist with the oven. The end result will be something to remember - whether they turn out well or not!
DIY entertainment – For older kids ages 5 to about 10, it can be fun to hire entertainment such as a balloon artist or character for a party. However, if that’s not in your budget, there are other ways to entertain the kids. Games are an obvious free choice, but one of my favorite options is creating something together - decorating plain white t-shirts, making necklaces, or any theme related craft. This also gives you something the child can take home as the party favor! n
